✨✧ Charlie Parker & Dizzy GillespieBird & Diz (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Verve, 1950. Used ... Out Of Stock
A classic meeting of two giants from the early years of bop – altoist Charlie Parker and trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie – brought together here in a session that Norman Granz would later list as one of the truest realizations of his vision for recording jazz music! Parker's sharp lines are a great contrast to the robust horn work of Diz – and the players work here with a rhythm section that features Thelonious Monk on piano, Curley Russell on bass, and Buddy Rich on drums. Titles include "Relaxin With Lee", "Leap Frog", "Oscar For Treadwell", and "Mohawk". The LP also includes a number of alternate takes, and has a nice photo of the 2 jazz giants on the cover. CD

✨✧ Charlie Parker & Dizzy GillespieBird & Diz/Jazz At Massey Hall/Diz N Bird In Concert ... CD
Not Now (UK), Late 40s/Early 50s. Used 3 CDs ... Out Of Stock
3 albums on 3 CDs. First is Bird & Diz – a classic meeting of two giants from the early years of bop – altoist Charlie Parker and trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie – brought together here in a session that Norman Granz would later list as one of the truest realizations of his vision for recording jazz music! Next is Jazz At Massey Hall – a legendary concert recorded at Massey Hall in Toronto, with a previously-unmatched quintet of superstar bop players: Charlie Parker on alto, Dizzy Gillespie on trumpet, Bud Powell on piano, Charles Mingus on bass, and Max Roach on drums. The quintet runs down "Perdido", "Salt Peanuts", "All The Things You Are", "Wee", "Hot House" and "A Night In Tunisia". Also included is Diz 'N' Bird In Concert – not the famous Verve Records pairing of Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker – but instead a more obscure live date from 1947, but one that really lets you hear the genius that happens when both players take the stage! The tunes have this approach that really hits at the most creative side of bop at the time – maybe even more open, expressive, and filled with larger ideas than some of the early singles that were coming out in 1947 – in a way that makes the whole thing a really important document of the complexity that was in the music, right from the start. The pair really stretch out on a fantastic two part reading of "Night In Tunisia (parts 1 & 2)", then soar through "Groovin High (parts 1 & 2)", "Confirmation", and "Dizzy Atmosphere". The second half of the set features some more live material, but just with Dizzy Gillespie in the lead, from 1953 – with Bill Graham on alto and baritone, plus a bit of vocals from Joe Carroll. Titles include "Swing Low Sweet Cadillac" and "Tin Tin Deo". CD

Limelight, 1965. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Way more than the simple Charlie Parker tribute promised in the title! For starters, the set's got two of the best cuts by Gillespie's mid 60s group with James Moody – "Um-Hmmm" and "Groovin High" – both of which have Moody playing in an incredibly unbridled tone that's just great! Next up are Coleman Hawkins and Roy Eldridge fronting a hip group with Billy Taylor on a long version of "Now's The Time". Taylor also makes an appearance on Dave Lambert's scatted vocal version of "Donna Lee", as well as on a large group medley of the tunes "Bird Watcher" and "Disorder At The Border". Finishing off the set is an amazing Lee Konitz solo version of "Blues For Bird", his own composition, played as a spare solo tune on alto! LP, Vinyl record album

Verve (Germany), Early 50s. Used 5 CDs ... $16.99
5 classic Charlie Parker albums for Verve – brought together here in a special set, with each album in a tiny LP-styled sleeve! Four of the records – Night & Day, April In Paris, Now's The Time, and Plays Cole Porter – are from that special 1957 series of albums in which Verve finally brought some of the key Parker performances out for the LP generation – collecting full sessions from the 78rpm and 10" LP years, along with some extra tracks – to create special showcases for Bird in both small group settings, and his famous "with strings" albums. These records together form a portrait of Parker that's amazing – everything you'd need to blow your mind – if Charlie hasn't already had that effect on you! Last up is Bird & Diz – a classic meeting of two giants from the early years of bop – altoist Charlie Parker and trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie – brought together here in a session that Norman Granz would later list as one of the truest realizations of his vision for recording jazz music! ✨✧ Anthony BraxtonAnthony Braxton's Charlie Parker Project 1993 ... CD
Hat Art (Switzerland), 1993. Used 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Not necessarily the bebop fest that you might expect from the title, but a wonderful extrapolation of earlier jazz ideas shaped by the musical vision of Athony Braxton! The tunes here are all originals by Charlie Parker – plus a few more by Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis – all older bop standards that are used as vehicles for freer expression by a group that includes Braxton on reeds, Ari Brown on tenor and soprano saxes, Paul Smoker on trumpet, Misha Mengelberg on piano, Joe Fonda on bass, and either Han Bennink or Pheeroan AkLaff on drums. Some of the numbers are taken in a relatively classic bebop mode, but others move into territory that's much freer and more concerned with sound and texture – as you might hear in some of Braxton's own compositions. The mix of modes is really wonderful – swinging between poles of jazz in a way that reminds us of some of Braxton's best 70s recordings. Titles include "Night In Tunisia", "Dewey Square", "Klactoveesedstene", "An Oscar For Treadwell", "Bebop", "Bongo Bop", "Yardbird Suite", and "Koko". CD

Not only does the set include all of the legendary Dial Records sides – which have been compiled elsewhere, but not as beautifully as here – but it also contains all of Bird's great recordings for Savoy, excellent tracks from the classic years, often poorly packaged over the years, but here part of a really wonderful set! This thing's got to be seen to be believed – as it's got a spiral notebook containing 8 CDs, with a slipcase for a big book that features loads of photos, notes on the session, and voluminous liner notes commissioned for the package. Plus, in addition to master and alternate takes of all the Dial and Savoy recordings, you'll also get sides recorded with Dizzy Gillespie for the Guild, Bel-Tone, and Comet labels! ✨✧ Dizzy GillespieDizzy! Love Songs ... LP
Up Front, Early 50s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Dizzy and strings – a surprisingly great combination! Although it was Charlie Parker who first made famous the modernist "jazz with strings" approach, Dizzy does wonderfully here in the format – working in similar fashion with edgey backing from the "Operatic String Orchestra" in sessions recorded in Paris in the early 50s! The material was originally only issued as a number of separate 78rpm singles, but is brought together here with full notes and a few bonus tracks – making for a wonderful album that documents this really under-represented part of Dizzy's career. The solos are warm, but edgey – blown over the top of backings that shimmer with rich colors, but have a slightly modern bent. Titles include "The Very Thought Of You", "Jalousie", "Sweet & Lovely", and "The Man I Love". LP, Vinyl record album

A brilliant meeting of modes from the mighty Arturo O'Farrill – a set that combines a rich tapestry of Cuban styles with American jazz elements from the cubop years and beyond – all into a spacious double-length set of performances that brings together musicians from around the globe, all recording in Havana under Arturo's direction! The tracks are often ambitious, but never overly-complicated – and instead almost take us back to the clarity of vision that we first loved in the older Afro-Cuban experiments of Machito with Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie – and the ability of those records to throw out many ideas at once, yet keep things very fluid and forward-moving at all times. Most tunes were written especially for the project – and titles include "Vaca Frita", "Second Line Soca", "El Bombon", "Just One Moment", "The Triumphant Journey", "Afro Latin Jazz Suite", "Guajira Simple", "Alabanza", "Blues Guaguanco", and "There's A Statue Of Jose Marti In Central Park".
