✨✧ Charlie ByrdBlues Sonata ... LP
Riverside, 1961. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the more ambitious records ever cut by guitarist Charlie Byrd – a set that begins with a side-long suite of tracks – the "Blue Sonata", which features Byrd playing in a much more complex way than usual! The sonata features three parts, all composed by Byrd, and Charlie plays acoustic with just a bit of trio backing – mixing jazz guitar modes with some slight serious music undercurrents – in ways that almost remind us of later European dates by Baden Powell. The rest of the record has Byrd on electric guitar, with piano from Barry Harris, bass from Keter Betts, and drums from Buddy Deppenschmidt – all on more standard jazz tracks that include "Jordu", "That Ole Devil Called Love", and "Zing Went The Strings Of My Heart". LP, Vinyl record album
(Blue label mono Bill Grauer Productions Inc pressing, with microphone logo and deep groove. Cover has surface and edge wear.)

✨✧ Charlie ByrdBossa Nova Pelos Passaros (Japanese paper sleeve edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Riverside (Japan), Early 60s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Guitarist Charlie Byrd was one of the first American players to record bossa nova tunes – but although his work with Stan Getz has always been well-documented, some of the titles under his own name can be quite hard to come by. This is one of the best ones that Charlie cut on his own – and it features tight guitar work in a mode that's similar to that used by Baden Powell on his early bossa recordings, augmented by trio rhythms – plus some occasional larger backings by Walter Raim, and some extended group settings that feature Charlie Hampton on alto, Earl Swope on trombone, and Willie Rodriguez on percussion. Tracks include "Ho Ba La La", "Samba Triste", "Yvone", "O Barquinho", "Un Abraco Do Bonfa", and "O Passaro". CD features 6 bonus tracks too! CD
(Out of print. Includes obi.)

✨✧ Stan Getz & Charlie ByrdJazz Samba ... LP
Verve, 1962. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of those records that no home should be without – not only a pivotal album in the growth of bossa nova in the 60s – but a set that also really helped set the career of tenorist Stan Getz on fire! The real credit here might almost go to guitarist Charlie Byrd – as Byrd was a big early proponent of bossa nova rhythms, and had already been experimenting with them on his records of the time – yet also gets a key extra "umph" here in the presence of Stan's tenor – a bold, rich, soulful sound that really helps give the music a lot of direction – in ways that still resonate strongly all these many years later! Getz is completely sublime – a master of tone and timing throughout – and perfectly fit to these tunes. Rhythms are mostly from Byrd's trio, augmented with some extra percussion – and titles include the classic "Desafinado", plus "E Luxo So", "Samba Dees Days", "Samba Triste", "O Pato", "Samba De Uma Nota So", and "Baia". LP, Vinyl record album
(Part of the Verve Vital Vinyl series!)

✨✧ Aldemaro Romero/Charlie ByrdOnda Nueva – New Wave ... LP
Columbia, 1971. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A swirling batch of easy groovers – the light and lively orchestrations of Aldemaro Romero, augmented by lead guitar from Charlie Byrd! The sound is Latin-inflected with a soaring finish – part 60s easy, part bossa-inspired orchestration, with touches of Italian soundtrack styles as well. If you know any of Aldemaro's other records of the time, you know how groovy this one is – and it's made all the more so by Charlie Byrd's nice guitar work. Titles include "You Get Me Crazy", "It Never Ends", "Romance", "Moliendo Cafe", "El Gavilan", "Pajarillo En Onda Nueva", and "El Catire". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original pressing. Cover is bent a bit at the bottom right.)

✨✧ Donald ByrdByrd In Hand (24 bit RVG Remaster) ... CD
Blue Note, 1959. Used ... $11.99
One of the best of Donald Byrd's early Blue Note albums – a sparkling set of hardbop tunes with a really souful edge! The album's one of a few that feature Byrd working with baritonist Pepper Adams – a frequent partner on his best recording dates of the late 50s, of which this set is one of the best. The rest of the group includes a rhythm section of Walter Davis, Sam Jones, and Art Taylor – all grooving nice and hard – plus tenor work by the great Charlie Rouse, whose raspy tone really gives the set a tremendous amount of depth. Tracks are a good blend of originals by Byrd and Davis, swinging with the lyrical beauty of a Horace Silver set of tracks – and titles include "Devil Whip", "Bronze Dance", "Clarion Calls", and "The Injuns". CD

✨✧ Charlie ParkerJazz At Midnight (blue vinyl pressing) (2020 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Blue Note, 1952/1953. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The first-ever vinyl release of material from two Charlie Parker appearances at the Howard Theater in Washington DC – one set recorded in 1952, the other in 1953 – debuting on vinyl from the CD-only release The Washington Concerts! Bird is wonderful throughout – with that kind of special, inventive edge that always makes his live material as essential as his studio work – solos that make renditions of familiar tunes come across as newly revelatory passages. Side one features the 1953 material – with a quartet that includes Jack Holliday on piano, Franklin Skeete on bass, and Max Roach on drums – on versions of "Cool Blues", "Anthropology", "Ornithology", and "Out Of Nowhere". Side two features a larger group from 1952 – with Bill Shanahan on piano, Charlie Byrd on guitar, Mert Oliver on bass, and Don Lamond on drums – playing "Scrapple From The Apple" – then expanded with the addition of Charlie Wilp on trumpet, Kai Winding and Earl Swope on trombones, and Zoot Sims on tenor – on a medley of "Out Of Nowhere/Now's The Time". LP, Vinyl record album
(First time on LP – pressed on "midnight" blue vinyl!)

✨✧ Bola SeteBola Sete Trios – Tour De Force (Bossa Nova/Tour De Force) ... CD
Fantasy, 1962/1963. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Brazilian guitar genius galore – 2 rare Fantasy albums from guitarist Bola Sete! First up is Bossa Nova – a date that was issued in the 60s with a title to cash in on the growing bossa craze in the US – and which stands as one of Sete's best for Fantasy Records! The sound is very much in keeping with some of the guitar-driven bossa of the time – work by Luiz Bonfa or Charlie Byrd, particularly in the way that Sete's spare acoustic guitar is mixed in with some lively percussion, plus bass from Ben Tucker and drums from Dave Bailey. Those two players really help the album find a nice little groove – and the whole thing dances along nicely, with tracks that include "Wagging Along", "Ash Wednesday", "Samba In The Perrotaoquei", "Brazilian Bossa Galore", "Without You", "My Different World", "Sweet Thing", and "Dilemma". Tour De Force offers a great range of different modes from guitarist Bola Sete – not just bossa-styled groovers, but other tunes that show a deeper, more introspective side of his talents! Bola's not afraid to break away from familiar, mainstream modes here – and given the early 60s date of the record, his sensitivity on quieter numbers is quite groundbreaking – a bit more like work from other players that wouldn't show up until later in the decade. Rhythm is by Fred Schrieber on bass and John Rae on drums, but there's also some moments that are more heavily oriented towards Bola's solo guitar. Titles include "Tour De Force", "Bouree", "A Noite Do Meu Bem", "Samba De Orpheus", "Moon River", and "Asturias". CD

✨✧ Thelonious MonkThelonious Monk In Person (At Town Hall/Plus Two At The Blackhawk) ... LP
Riverside, 1959. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A pair of classic live albums! First up is Thelonious Monk Orchestra At Town Hall – a unique large group effort from Thelonious Monk – but one that bristles with all the angular energy of his other great work for Riverside! The group here is a tentet – filled with excellent players who include Donald Byrd, Phil Woods, Pepper Adams, Eddie Bert, Robert Northern, and Charlie Rouse – all supported by rhythm from the team of Sam Jones on bass and Art Taylor on drums, possibly one of the key factors for the success of the record! The album's comprised of Monk classics like "Little Rootie Tootie", "Thelonious", "Friday The 13th", "Off Minor", "Crepuscule with Nellie" and "Monk's Mood" – all arranged by Hall Overton, a little-remembered modernist from the 50s, but one with a keen dedication towards pushing new sounds from old formats! Overton really keeps the spirit of Monk's music intact here – penning charts that allow for plenty of solo space and the kind of cross-trading lines you'd hear in some of Monk's best multi-horn small group sides for Riverside! Next is Thelonious Monk Quartet Plus Two At The Blackhawk – a stunning pre-Columbia session from Thelonious Monk – a really great live date that has Monk's familiar quartet augmented by west coast players Joe Gordon on trumpet and Harold Land on tenor! Given that Charlie Rouse is already in the group on tenor, the addition of Land's horn makes for a very soulful set – and Gordon's one of those players we love whenever we get a chance to hear him on record, which isn't that often, given how few sessions he cut! Other players include John Ore on bass and Billy Higgins on drums – and titles include "Four In One", "Let's Call This", and "Worry Later". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Herb Ellis/Laurindo Almeida/Johnny GrayThree Guitars In Bossa Nova Time ... CD
Epic/Wounded Bird, 1963. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really really wonderful little record – one that's far more than you might guess from it's slightly gimmicky title! The session's clearly done in a mode to resonate with the Charlie Byrd or Stan Getz bossa work of the early 60s, but it's also got a slightly offbeat quality that makes it really unique – a sound that partly comes from the use of three guitars by three relatively different players, and from the way that the tunes themselves are put together. There's almost a jam session feel at times here – with the guitars coming together in a tension of different voices, hardly the sort of thing you'd hear in a regular bossa album. But equally great is the tenor sax work of Bob Enevoldsen – which comes in with a sharper edge and a bit more soul than his 50s sides – creating a deeper quality to the tunes that's really great. Percussion is by a trio that includes Milt Holland, Bob Neel, and Chico Guerrero – and Donn Trenner plays piano and Bob Bertaux is on bass. Titles include "I Told Ya I Love Ya Now Get Out", "Sweet Dreams", "Bossa Nova #2", "Bossa Nova Samba", and "Leave It To Me". CD
