Charlie ByrdBlues Sonata ... LP
Riverside, 1961. Very Good ... $9.99
One of the more ambitious records ever cut by guitarist Charlie Byrd – a set that begins with a side-long suite of tracks – the "Blue Sonata", which features Byrd playing in a much more complex way than usual! The sonata features three parts, all composed by Byrd, and Charlie plays acoustic with just a bit of trio backing – mixing jazz guitar modes with some slight serious music undercurrents – in ways that almost remind us of later European dates by Baden Powell. The rest of the record has Byrd on electric guitar, with piano from Barry Harris, bass from Keter Betts, and drums from Buddy Deppenschmidt – all on more standard jazz tracks that include "Jordu", "That Ole Devil Called Love", and "Zing Went The Strings Of My Heart". LP, Vinyl record album
(Blue label mono Bill Grauer Productions Inc pressing, with microphone logo and deep groove. Cover has light wear and a few small stains along the top back. Vinyl has a bit of groove wear at the end of "Ballad in B Minor" but plays fine otherwise.)

Charlie ByrdLet Go ... LP
Columbia, Mid 60s. Very Good ... $6.99
One of the best of Charlie Byrd's pop bossa recordings for Columbia – featuring a small group that includes flute, bass, and drums behind Charlie's acoustic guitar. The album includes a stellar reading of "Canto De Ossanha", done as "Let Go", and featuring a breezy approach to the track that's just great. Other tracks include "Blues 13", "Esperando O Sol", "Bird of Paradise", and "Lonely Princess". LP, Vinyl record album

Jeremiah Cymerman/Charlie LookerHorizon Made Of Canvas ... CD
Astral Spirits, 2021. New Copy ... $8.99
Slow-building sonic interplay between the clarinets of Jeremiah Cymerman and the guitars and piano of Charlie Looker – used in very open space that really lets both musicians find each others' sound, then unfold with a mode that's quite beautiful overall! There's certainly a nod here to the ECM legacy of the 70s – but there's also very different handling of the sound than Manfred Eicher would have done – and a really nice sense of depth and subtle sounds that keeps things interesting all the way through. Part of the approach might be the way that Cymerman uses pedals, ostensibly to modify the sound of his clarinet – although at times, the instrument has a straightforward acoustic vibe. Titles include "Speaking Of Dust", "The Ecstasy Of Betrayal", "A Horizon Made Of Canvas", "Samson", and "I'll Show You What You Are". CD

Charlie FeathersCharlie Feathers – His Complete King Recordings ... CD
King, Late 50s. New Copy ... $4.99 7.99
The legendary Charlie Feathers is best known as one of the rawest rockers on the Memphis scene of the 50s – but during the decade, he cut some of his best work for King Records in Cincinnati – a label who captured the dynamic energy of Charlie with the same skill they brought to their R&B work at the time! These sides are completely smoking – arguably some of the best recordings that Feathers cut during this initial burst of activity – work that we'd stand side by side next to some of the best that Sun Records has to offer – and by that, we'd even include some of the famous giants on that label! Both Charlie's guitar work and vocals are wonderfully distinct – and titles include "When You Decide", "Too Much Alike", "One Hand Loose", "Bottle To The Baby", "Everybody's Loving My Baby", "Can't Hardly Stand It", "Nobody's Woman", and "When You Come Around". Terry Gibbs/Sal Nestico/Nat Pierce/Jake Hanna/Turk Van Lake/Charlie AndrusTerry Gibbs/Sal Nestico/Nat Pierce/Jake Hanna/Turk Van Lake/Charlie Andrus ... LP
Time, 1963. Very Good ... $7.99
One of the most hard-grooving albums we've ever heard from jazz vibist Terry Gibbs – and a set that's full of surprises throughout! First, Nat Pierce plays jazz organ, instead of his usual piano – which gives the whole thing an R&B current you'd never expect – especially from Pierce – and which almost has Gibbs' vibes coming across like the sort of instrumentation you'd be more likely to hear on Prestige Records at the time! Also great is a young Sal Nistico, who blows tenor with a beautiful sound – rich, full, but also nicely compact for the short tunes on the date – which also romp along with contributions from Turk Van Lake on guitar, Charlie Andrus on bass, and Jake Hanna on drums. Almost a soul jazz set overall, and quite a cooker too – with titles that include "We Three", "Bathtub Eyes", "7F", "The Tweaker", "No Chops", and "Big Lips". LP, Vinyl record album
(Red label stereo pressing. Cover has some wear and aging.)

Peanuts Holland/Buck Clayton/Charlie SingletonJazz In Paris ... CD
Universal (France), 1953/1954/1955. Used ... $9.99
During the 1950s, Paris was a particularly supportive environment for American jazz players with a slightly more traditional bent – swing-era giants who were perhaps fading a bit in the eyes of US audiences, but who were still very much on top with the French crowds. This CD is strong proof of that legacy – and it features three different sessions that each are fronted by a famous American swing trumpeter. All sessions are pretty great – but our particular favorite is the one with Peanuts Holland, as it features some great tenor work by Guy Lafitte and vibes by Geo Daly, giving the session a quite different feel than the usual swing-based session. There's a total of 15 tracks on the CD – and all the material's quite rare. Titles include "Purple Sound", "Yesterdays", "Blue Feeling", "Buck's Bon Voyage", and "Gift For The Club". CD

Keith Jarrett & Charlie HadenLast Dance ... CD
ECM (Germany), 2014. Used ... $6.99
Keith Jarrett and Charlie Haden have been playing together for many decades – growing together in each other's musical lives, and continuing to find rich new ways of expression – even on more subtle sessions like this! The duo take on some of the standards territory that Keith's explored often with a trio – but work together wonderfully without any drums in the mix – as Charlie's bass blocks out these spare, solid spaces that Keith quickly fills with really lovely, lyrical lines on piano! There's not a huge amount of surprises in the record – but that's also what makes the whole thing so strong – as both players could really show off in such an unfettered setting, but instead choose to maturely show their strengths in such a subtle, but really effective way. Titles include "My Ship", "Round Midnight", "It Might As Well Be Spring", "Godobye", "Everything Happens To Me", and "My Old Flame". CD

Lee Konitz/Brad Mehldau/Charlie Haden/Paul MotianLive At Birdland ... CD
ECM, 2011. Used ... $6.99
Alto sax and all around jazz legend Lee Konitz playing with a great group of players – drummer Paul Motian, double bassist Charlie Haden and pianist Brad Helhdau – captured live at New York's fabled Birdland, in December of 2009! There's really no need to qualify assessments of Konitz's performance with a note about his age, he simply sounds terrific here on a set that's fairly easygoing in approach, but still quite dexterous! Includes fresh, unique takes on "Loverman", "Lullaby Of Birdland", "Solar", "I Fall In Love Too Easily", "You Stepped Out Of A Dream" and "Oleo". CD

Charlie LouvinCash On The Barrelhead ... CD
Gusto, Early 80s. New Copy ... $4.99 7.99
Really wonderful later work from the great Charlie Louvin – done years after the breakout of the famous Louvin Brothers duo, and after his brother Ira had passed on – a set of indie recordings that are mostly from the early 80s, and which show Charlie in pretty great formation on his own! There's definitely some help along the way – an unnamed female duet partner on one tracks, and work from Jim & Jesse on two more – but Charlie holds the spotlight strongly throughout, and brings in a few bluegrass touches from time to time, varying his vocal approach to fit the modes. Titles include "If I Could Only Win Your Love", "I Take The Cash", "I Don't Believe You've Met My Baby", "Sweeter Than The Flowers", "Apartment 9", "Are You Teasing Me", and "The Same Thing On Our Minds". CD

Charlie MarianoMirror ... CD
Atlantic/Wounded Bird, 1972. New Copy ... $6.99 11.98
A seminal electric session from Charlie Mariano – one recorded after his shift from bop-based work into trippier, more psychedelic influences – and one of his few American dates from the time! The record has Charlie working on soprano and alto sax, with a group that includes Pat Rebillot on electric piano and organ, Tony Levine on bass, and David Spinozza on guitar – all grooving along with the reeds in a stretched-out, tripped-out kind of way – a mixture of jazz and some Eastern influences, but always held together nicely – without some of the overindulgence of some other Mariano records from the period. Charlie's solos are still icy as ever, but much freer than on his classic work, and with definite post-Coltrane influences – and titles include "Madras", "Himalaya", "Vasi Bindu", and "Mirror", which has vocals by Asha Puthli! Charlie MarianoTango Para Charlie ... CD
Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 2000. New Copy ... $16.99
Quite an interesting project from reedman Charlie Mariano – a record that shows that his search for new creative settings never ends! As you'd guess from the title, there's a bit of a tango inspiration to the record, but in a format that's very different than most tango jazz – as the album features Charlie on alto and flute, in duets with Quique Sinesi, who plays a variety of acoustic guitars, including 7 string Spanish, charango, and piccolo guitar. This spare sound is quite different than regular tango modes – and the spareness allows Mariano to solo freely – in that wonderful range of tones that's always made his work surprisingly soulful, no matter what the setting. Titles include "Tango Para Charlie", "If Only", "Zephyr", "The Lady", and "Faluseando". CD

Charlie MonroeStarday Sessions ... CD
Starday/Gusto, 1972. New Copy ... $5.99 9.99
Charlie Monroe was part of the Monroe Brothers back at the start – but after he and brother Bill parted company in 1938, most people focused on the talents of the famous mandolin player, and forgot all about Charlie! Yet that other Monroe continued to make great music for many years – singing alongside his guitar with a nicely rough-edged vibe, as he does here in a series of almost-lost recordings for Starday Records from the early 70s – a label who captured Charlie in a nicely stripped-down way that feels far more postwar than you might expect! These tracks are nicely no-nonsense – just core bluegrass instrumentation on guitar, mandolin, and fiddle – with Charlie out in the lead on vocals that may not be as sweet as his brother, but still pack plenty of punch. Titles include "Would You", "It's Hard To Believe", "Find Em Fool Em & Leave Em Alone", "Walking With You In My Dreams", "I'm Going Away", "Shake My Mother's Hand For Me", "Child Of The King", and "Lord Build Me A Cabin". Charlie Munro QuartetEastern Horizons ... LP
Philips/Be! (Germany), 1967. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
A totally cool little record – and one that more than lives up to the Eastern promise of its cover! The album's a real stunner from Australian reedman Charlie Munro – a beautiful mix of jazz and exotic elements, at a level that puts it up there with a rare few records that work this well – like the Indo-Jazz experiments of Joe Harriott, the earlier recordings of Ahmed Abdul Malik, and maybe the legendary Jazz Meets World series on MPS! Munro's range of influences is nicely varied here – with some elements of Indian music, others borrowed from Japan, and even some from points that are a bit more Mid-East – mostly delivered on familiar jazz instrumentation, but with very dramatic results. Charlie plays tenor, alto, soprano sax, and bass clarinet – plus a bit of flute and cello too – and the rest of the group includes Mark Bowden on drums and vibes, Neville Whitehead on bass, and Bob McIvor on trombone – an instrument that's often used in these dark, bassy tones with the rhythms. Titles include "Islamic Suite", "Arch's Groove", "Malahari Raga", "David", "Japanese Love Song", "Minimum", "When I Look At You", and "Raised Eyebrows". LP, Vinyl record album

Charlie ParkerCharlie Parker With Strings – The Master Takes ... CD
Verve, 1949/1950. Used ... $3.99
The genius of Bird and strings is hard to describe – an edgey approach that really goes far past most other "jazz with strings" projects, not a ballad-driven one, but a tensely strained one that brings out some of Parker's best soloing, almost in a moody soundtrack-type way. The tracks are a lot freer and less bop-driven than some of Bird's normal work, and it's incredible to hear him soloing with such complexity – even more proof of the genius he clearly exhibited in relation to his contemporaries. Verve/Essential Jazz (Spain), Early 50s/1954. Used ... $6.99
Charlie Parker takes on the music of Cole Porter – with results that make for some of his most classic moments at Verve! Parker's horn is as hard-bitten as always, but it's also working here in a slightly lyrical vibe – one that brings out the warmth that Charlie could have at just the right moments – that sense of soul that made his contribution to jazz one of the more formative sounds of the century! Porter's music takes on tones that we might never have expected – especially in some of the album's alternate versions, which give key proof that Bird was always working out new ideas with each new solo. The group features Walter Bishop on piano, Billy Bauer or Jerome Darr on guitar, Teddy Kotick on bass, and Roy Haynes or Art Taylor on drums – on titles that include "Just One Of Those Things", "I Get A Kick Out Of You", "Love For Sale", and "I Love Paris. Side two features a larger group from 1952 – with Bill Shanahan on piano, Charlie Byrd on guitar, Mert Oliver on bass, and Don Lamond on drums – playing "Scrapple From The Apple" – then expanded with the addition of Charlie Wilp on trumpet, Kai Winding and Earl Swope on trombones, and Zoot Sims on tenor – on a medley of "Out Of Nowhere/Now's The Time". ✨✧ Charlie ParkerNight & Day – The Genius Of Charlie Parker #1 ... LP
Verve, Early 50s. Very Good ... $7.99
A classic 50s collection of Verve material by Charlie Parker – and one of those records that will definitely help you understand his genius right from the start! The lineup here is slightly large – wonderful arrangements by Joe Lipman that are a bit orchestral, with strings as well – but never used in styles that get in the way of Charlie Parker's solidly smoking alto sax! In fact, the music is a key example of just what makes Bird so different – as he's right out front, taking off in all his own directions – showing that although part of a group, a musician of his caliber can also take flight in ways that few jazz musicians would have imagined a few years before. The set features incredible readings of the tunes "Temptation", "Lover", "Stella By Starlight", "Dancing In The Dark", and "Laura". LP, Vinyl record album

Columbia (Japan), 1950. Used 2CDs ... $24.99
Rare live material from Charlie Parker – recorded in the very familiar territory of the Birdland nightclub, but not issued until an LP release from the 70s! The material originally was broadcast on radio, but through the series of the Rose transcription disc archive – which meant better recording and preservation than most other radio material of the bop years – helping to make this album a real treasure among Bird fans in the years after his death. The lineup is a very tight bop-based one – with Fats Navarro on trumpet, Bud Powell on piano, and Art Blakey on bass. Chubby Newsome adds vocals to "Embraceable You" – and the rest of the set includes "Wahoo", "Round Midnight", "This Time The Dream's On Me", "Dizzy Atmosphere", "A Night In Tunisia", "Move", "The Street Beat", "Out Of Nowhere", "Little Willie Leaps", "Ornithology", "I'll Remember April", and "Cool Blues/52nd St Theme". Charlie Parker in a Latin mode – one of the most unique, most striking settings ever for the legendary alto saxophonist! You might not expect the set to work, but it does – and does beautifully, thanks to arrangements that offer plenty of room for the soloist to step out, while the core group keeps a tight Latin groove. The approach is one that not only expanded bop, but allowed for a lot more solo freedom within Latin music as well – although many groups took years to pick up on this approach. The package features a classic David Stone Martin cover – and titles include "Begin The Beguine", "La Paloma", "Mama Inez", "La Cucuracha", and "Tico Tico". LP, Vinyl record album

A classic meeting of two giants from the early years of bop – altoist Charlie Parker and trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie – brought together here in a session that Norman Granz would later list as one of the truest realizations of his vision for recording jazz music! Parker's sharp lines are a great contrast to the robust horn work of Diz – and the players work here with a rhythm section that features Thelonious Monk on piano, Curley Russell on bass, and Buddy Rich on drums. Titles include "Relaxin With Lee", "Leap Frog", "Oscar For Treadwell", and "Mohawk". The LP also includes a number of alternate takes, and has a nice photo of the 2 jazz giants on the cover. CD

Liberty/Universal (Japan), 1957. New Copy ... $13.99 About November 25, 2021
One of the few albums ever cut as a leader by crack drummer Charlie Persip – and a great record that you might have missed because Howard Rumsey's name is bigger on the cover than Charlie's! The album's one of Rumsey's "Lighthouse Series" sides of the 50s – but it's a lot harder-driving and more energy-filled than most of the other Lighthouse-related sides coming out of LA at the time. Half the record features Charlie's group – a set of east coasters that includes Lee Morgan, Benny Golson, and Wynton Kelly – and the other part features some of the players from that ensemble mixing it up with drummer Stan Levey and other LA talents that include Frank Rosolino, Conte Candoli, Bob Cooper, and others. In all, the album's a great meeting of east and west coast hardbop styles – with short driving tracks that include "Reggie Of Chester", "Celedia", "Moto", "The Champ", and "Wildwood". CD

The roots of bebop! During the early 40s, sets held in Harlem nightclubs, especially the famous Minton's, were seminal to the development of bebop – and you'll hear exactly what we mean on this album! The players run through a batch of material that might be called small-combo swing – but the style of the solos shows a lot of bebop, as well as a strong penchant for new ideas. One of those records that no home should be without – not only a pivotal album in the growth of bossa nova in the 60s – but a set that also really helped set the career of tenorist Stan Getz on fire! The real credit here might almost go to guitarist Charlie Byrd – as Byrd was a big early proponent of bossa nova rhythms, and had already been experimenting with them on his records of the time – yet also gets a key extra "umph" here in the presence of Stan's tenor – a bold, rich, soulful sound that really helps give the music a lot of direction – in ways that still resonate strongly all these many years later! Getz is completely sublime – a master of tone and timing throughout – and perfectly fit to these tunes. Rhythms are mostly from Byrd's trio, augmented with some extra percussion – and titles include the classic "Desafinado", plus "E Luxo So", "Samba Dees Days", "Samba Triste", "O Pato", "Samba De Uma Nota So", and "Baia". Jazz Workshop/Fantasy, 1948. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the more obscure Charlie Parker sessions of the 40s – at least in the original release! The material was recorded in 1948, on a home tape recorder, but not issued until after his death – part of a huge wave of Charlie Parker material that hit the market at the end of the 50s and start of the 60s! The sound here is quite raw – made even more so by the recording quality – but it also offers up a good illustration of the sheer power of Bird back in the day, the kind of bold, bracing energy that made even more than the regular jazz world sit up and take notice. The group's a quintet – with Miles Davis on trumpet, Duke Jordan on piano, Tommy Potter on bass, and Max Roach on drums – and there's been a few tape tricks in the mastering, in order to come up with a better version of some of the recordings. Tracks are short – in true bebop format – and titles include "Night In Tunisia", "Dizzy Atmosphere", "Out Of Nowhere", "My Old Flame", "How High The Moon", "This Time The Dream's On Me", "Hot House", and "Chasin The Bird". A classic early album from Charlie Parker on Verve – and one that may well support one of the strangest cover illustrations ever done by the great David Stone Martin! The image of a bird-headed Parker blowing alto is more than compelling enough – but inside, the music is even better – pulled from a variety of different early Parker sessions for Norman Granz – showing some of the real early strengths of his sound! Titles include group material with quartet material with Miles Davis on trumpet, Walter Bishop on piano, and Max Roach on drums – on the titles "Au Privave", "Why Do I Love You", "KC Blues", "She Rote", and "Star Eyes". An amazing package, and an amazing moment in the career of Charlie Parker – the beginning of his relationship with Verve Records producer Norman Granz – who really helped refine Bird's talents, and also open him up in some new creative directions! The material here originally came out on 10" LPs on the Mercury and Clef labels, but they're also the birth of the Verve Records sound too – top-shelf presentation, and care that Charlie Parker may not have been getting from previous labels like Dial or Savoy! The set features the first two volumes of Charlie Parker With Strings – amazing music that has Bird's sharp-edged alto soaring out over some modern string arrangements – really standard-setting experiments that so many others followed in years to come! Next is Bird & Diz – a sublime pairing with Dizzy Gillespie's trumpet. Charlie Parker Plays South Of The Border is a key cubop session – Bird's alto with Latin rhythms – an equally groundbreaking match as his strings sessions! Last is the self titled Charlie Parker album – a great quartet session, with titles that include the classics "Confirmation" and "Now's The Time". ✨✧ Charlie ParkerMagnificent Charlie Parker (colored vinyl pressing) (2019 Black Friday Release) ... LP
Verve, Early 50s. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
There's also two great tracks with larger arrangements by Gil Evans and voices by Dave Lambert – "Old Folks" and "In The Still Of The Night" – and a few more with trumpeter Red Rodney and pianist John Lewis – "Blues For Alice", "Lover Man", and "Si Si". LP, Vinyl record album
