Charles Lloyd8 – Kindred Spirits – Live From The Lobero (180 gram 2LP set with bonus DVD) ... LP
Blue Note, 2020. New Copy 2LP ... Just Sold Out!
Few players have the scope and depth of Charles Lloyd over the space of so many decades – and here, once again, Lloyd reminds us that his longevity in jazz has everything to do with the continued growth of his music – and not just the fact that he's stuck around for so long! The sound is wonderful – this 21st Century extrapolation of spiritual currents that Lloyd first unleashed in his early solo years, and which hit a very focused, clear vibe here in a quintet lineup that includes Julian Lage on guitar, Gerald Clayton on paino, Reuben Rogers on bass, and Eric Harland on drums. Lage's solos are as searing as Lloyd's, but in a very different way – and the mix of his tones and the sharper reeds is beautiful, and spun out over very long tracks that include "Dream Weaver", "Requiem", "La Llorna", and "Part 5 – Ruminations". LP, Vinyl record album
(3-sided vinyl pressing, done beautifully, with 12" booklet of notes – and bonus DVD of the performance!)

Charles LloydCharles Lloyd In The Soviet Unione ... LP
Atlantic, 1967. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $14.99
Charles Lloyd in the Soviet Union – blowing beautifully on an open-ended set that must have really loosened things up in Red Square! The album features Lloyd at his freewheeling 60s best – working in his group with Keith Jarrett on piano, Ron McClure on bass, and Jack DeJohnette on drums – on some of those great long, very open numbers they do so well! Lloyd plays both tenor and flute – both with strongly spiritual tones that work great with the modal touches of the rhythm section – and titles include "Days & Nights Waiting", "Sweet Georgia Bright", "Love Song To A Baby", and "Tribal Dance". Charles LloydForest Flower/Soundtrack ... CD
Atlantic/Rhino, 1966/1968. Used ... $6.99
A famous album – but for good reason! The set's something of a landmark in spiritual jazz from the 60s – and it features a classic live performance from Charles Lloyd, recorded at the Monterey Jazz Festival – almost as a distillation and popularization of ideas that were brewing in the music of John Coltrane, Eric Dolphy, and others! The group here features a young Keith Jarrett on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, and Jack DeJohnette on drums – all flowing magnificently with Lloyd's work on tenor and flute – in an open-ended groove that draws on modal rhythms for inspiration, and which features solos that stretch out, but never go "outside"! The classic performances of "Forest Flower" takes up all of side one – with a dreamy drifting quality that has Jarrett at his best – and side two features a version of his "Sorcery", plus McBee's "Song Of Her", and a version of "East Of The Sun". Soundtrack is with Lloyd on tenor and flute, Keith Jarrett on piano, Ron McClure on bass, and Jack DeJohnette on drums. Titles include "Forest Flower 69", "Pre-Dawn", "Sombrero Sam", and "Voice In The Night". CD

Charles LloydLove-In ... LP
Atlantic, 1967. Very Good ... $9.99
A classic batch of modal grooves from Charles Lloyd – recorded during the height of his mind-expanding years, with his famous quartet that included Keith Jarrett on piano and Jack DeJohnette on drums! The tracks are long and magical, done with that spiritual spiraling sound that Lloyd was wowing the hippies with at the time – and considering that this set was recorded live at the Fillmore, there were an awful lot of hippies present to be wowed! But the set's also got a charm that lives long past its time – thanks to an expansive vision from Lloyd on flute and tenor, and from Jarrett on piano too. Titles include "Sunday Morning", "Love-in", "Tribal Dance", and "Temple Bells". LP, Vinyl record album

Charles LloydMoon Man ... LP
Kapp, Early 70s. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $9.99
Weird bit of hippy dippy jazz from Charles Lloyd, with vocals on most tracks, and lots of groovy lyrics about "the moonman", "computer man", and "heavy kharma". The vocalist is not credited, but most of the lyrics are written by Lloyd, although we don't really think he's singing. The backing is still fairly groovy and jazzy, but the record's quite different than many of Lloyd's other LPs. Titles include "Hejira", "Moonman", "Sermon", and "Sweet Juvenia". Atlantic, 1968. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $6.99
A killer from the Charles Lloyd group of the late 60s – a set that still stretches out with all the spiritual energy of Lloyd's other Atlantic albums, yet also seems to have a bit more of a groove, too! The setting is live, and the tracks are nice and long – allowing ample room for solos by Lloyd on tenor and flute and Keith Jarrett on piano – working here with great accompaniment from Ron McClure on bass, and Jack DeJohnette on drums. Titles include a massive take on "Sombrero Sam" – done in a nice Latin groove, and very upbeat – plus the spiritual "Voice In The Night", and the cuts "Pre-Dawn" and "Forest Flower 69". Charles LloydVoice In The Night ... LP
ECM (Germany), 1999. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $31.99 35.99
A key album from the later Charles Lloyd years on ECM – from a moment when the saxophonist seemed to be completely reinvigorated, and exploring very different territories than his music of the 60s! Part of the sound has Lloyd hitting a few ECM vibes – hard not to do with a group that features John Abercrombie on guitar, Dave Holland on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – but there's also moments that are looser and freer, too – really showing the individuality that's always been such a hallmark of Charles' recordings, and which here is hardly going to cowtow to any sort of stricter style for the label. The tenor work is superb – very sinuous and constantly exploring, but never overindulgent – and titles include "Voice In The Night", "Dorotea's Studio", "Homage", "Pocket Full Of Blues", "Forest Flower Sunrise/Sunset", and "A Flower Is A Lovesome Thing". ✨✧ Charles LloydWild Man Dance ... CD
Blue Note, 2015. Used ... $9.99
Charles Lloyd makes a step over to Blue Note Records – and the result is one of his richest, most organic albums in years! The whole thing's a live performance from Poland – done as a suite of longer tracks that feature a core acoustic quartet with Lloyd on tenor, plus added cymbalom and lyra – both used very heavily, with these open, sonic properties that are especially great – almost a way of bringing in some of the exoticism of Lloyd's earlier recordings, but with less focus on the reeds. The group also features Gerald Clayton on piano – and both he and Lloyd can be airy one minute, powerful the next – as the tunes build up slowly, and form this wonderful painting in sound. Titles include "Gardner", "Lark", "River", "Wild Man Dance", "Invitation", and "Flying Over The Odra Valley". CD

✨✧ Charles Lloyd & The MarvelsI Long To See You ... CD
Blue Note, 2016. Used ... $8.99
A Blue Note debut from legendary reedman Charles Lloyd – who definitely wants to bring something new to his work on the label! The set features his Marvels combo – a quintet that features very prominent work from guitarist Bill Frisell, whose edgey tones here make for a very different sound than the use of guitar on some of Lloyd's recent records – especially as the group also features steel guitar from Greg Leisz, who shades things in with some washes of sound that really echo Frisell's tones too! The rest of the lineup features Reuben Rodgers on bass and Eric Harland on drums – and Lloyd plays both tenor and alto flute, with a warmth that really offsets some of the starker sounds of Frisell. The record features guest vocal work from Norah Jones and Willie Nelson – who sing on a song apiece – but the core appeal here is the interplay between Lloyd and guitar, but in a way that's very different than his 60s work with Gabor Szabo. Titles include "Of Course Of Course", "La Llorna", "Abide With Me", "Barche Lamsel", "All My Trials", and "Sombrero Sam". CD

TCB (Switzerland), 1967. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A really fantastic live performance from the Charles Lloyd group of the late 60s – a double-length set that's a wonderful complement to their classic albums on Atlantic Records! The group is great – a young Keith Jarrett on piano, Ron McClure on bass, and Jack DeJohnette on drums – fantastic partners for the freewheeling style of Lloyd on both tenor and flute, as the group work here through modes and melodies that feel years ahead of their time – all spun out on these long, extended performances that are mindblowing throughout! Swiss Radio recorded the material in 1967, and we wonder why it's taken so long to come out – as the whole thing is completely essential, and features long takes on "Love Ship", "Days & Nights Waiting", "Lady Gabor", "Forest Flower", "Love Song To A Baby", and "Sweet Georgia Bright". Eric AlexanderLeap Of Faith ... CD
Giant Step Arts, 2019. New Copy ... $19.99 20.00
The great Eric Alexander in a trio mode – soaring out with a lot more space and soul than some of his albums with a pianist – and that's saying a lot, given the wonderfully soulful sound of that work too! The style is a mode that Alexander has explored a bit over the years, but which really comes out with great force here – and opens up a sharper, more biting tone than you might be used to hearing from the saxophonist over his 25+ years of recording! It's almost as if Eric's awoken with a whole new sense of spirit – and we mean that quite literally, as the album has Alexander arising as a very powerful saxophonist in a spiritual tradition – with a sound that's still very individual, but which has links to a legacy that includes Pharoah Sanders and Charles Lloyd – something we never would have said about Eric just a few years ago. The other trio members are key to the sound, too – Doug Weiss on bass and Jonathan Blake on drums – and titles include "Corazon Perdido", "Luquitas", "Mars", "Magyar", "Big Richard", "Second Impression", and "Frenzy". Larry CoryellBarefoot Boy ... CD
Flying Dutchman/BGP (UK), 1972. Used ... $6.99
One of Larry Coryell's greatest albums ever! Barefoot Boy is a much more expansive session than some of Coryell's others, fueled in part by the spiritual intensity of the Impulse Records generation. It's got a momentum that's pretty darn exciting throughout – but the compositions are nice and long, which gives the players plenty of space to explore. Personnel includes Steve Marcus on tenor and soprano sax, Mike Mandel on piano, Roy Haynes on drums, and Larry Killian on congas – working with Coryell on long trippy tracks that remind us a bit of 60s work by Chico Hamilton, Charles Lloyd, and Gabor Szabo. Titles include "Call To The Higher Consciousness", "The Great Escape", and "Gypsy Queen". CD

Impulse, Late 60s. Very Good Gatefold ... $11.99
Excellent grooviness – and typical of the mad instrumental LPs that showed up on Impulse when they weren't cutting high-minded jazz! The record has a nice mix of easy funky jazz and pop psychedelia – performed by a range of groovy players conducted by Bob Thiele, and featuring Tom Scott & The California Dreamers, Bill Plummer, and Gabor Szabo. There's a nice cool version of "Fakin It", plus Charles Lloyd's "Forest Flower", "Light My Fire", and "Eight Miles High". Very groovy! LP, Vinyl record album

Teensville (Australia), Mid 60s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Groovy music from the mid 60s – a fantastic follow-up to the other volumes in this excellent series – and like the rest, a tremendous showcase for rare pop gems that we never would have heard otherwise! As the notes are quick to point out, most of these singers are artists who aren't trying to jump on the British Invasion bandwagon – and instead stretch out from earlier male pop modes – mixing bits of rock instrumentation with fuller arrangements and great studio touches – often with currents that seem to point the way towards Sunshine Pop styles to come, and maybe echo modes of The Beach Boys a lot more than The Beatles! The CD has a whopping 35 tracks in all – and titles include "It Comes & Goes" b Mike Berry, "I Can't Stop Myself" by Lemme B Good, "Sunshine Sweetheart" by Kenny Chandler, "When You Ask About Love" by Johnny Peters, "Miss Temptation" by Ray Lynn, "Blue Ribbons" by Peter Ford, "Give Me Enough Love" by Vern McEntire, "Lay Down Your Arms" by Grady Lloyd, "I Could Conquer The World" by Don Charles, "Melony" by Buddy Wayne, and "Just A Boy In Love" by Ray Whitely.
