Charles LloydCharles Lloyd Trios – Ocean ... LP
Blue Note, 2022. New Copy Gatefold ... $25.99 28.99
Maybe the most spiritual of the three albums recorded as part of the great Trios project from reedman Charles Lloyd – a set that was recorded at the legendary Lobero theater in Santa Barbara, but without an audience in place – which makes for a beautiful mix of wide space and intimate interplay! Lloyd is wonderful on reeds, especially flute – and the group also features Gerald Clayton on piano and Anthony Wilson on guitar – stretching out with Charles on these long tracks that allow for both exploratory solos, and this very easygoing interplay between the musicians. Tracks include "Jaramillo Blues", "Isa Wind", "Hagar & The Inuits", and "The Lonely One". LP, Vinyl record album

Charles LloydJourney Within ... LP
Atlantic, 1967. Very Good+ ... $14.99 19.99
A great 60s moment not just for reedman Charles Lloyd, but also for pianist Keith Jarrett – who was a key part of Charles' group for a few years at the time – and who really opens up on this classic set! Tracks are long and very open – reaching in a spiritual sort of way with definite Coltrane overtones, yet also showing that more complexly rhythmic mode that made Lloyd a standout in previous groups before he was a leader – a quality that's really augmented by the presence of Jack DeJohnette on drums! Lloyd plays both tenor and flute – and Jarrett switches to soprano sax on one number! Titles include"Journey Within", "Love No 3", "Memphis Green" and "Lonesome Child". LP, Vinyl record album
(Green and blue label stereo pressing.)

Charles LloydLove-In ... LP
Atlantic, 1967. Near Mint- ... $29.99
A classic batch of modal grooves from Charles Lloyd – recorded during the height of his mind-expanding years, with his famous quartet that included Keith Jarrett on piano and Jack DeJohnette on drums! The tracks are long and magical, done with that spiritual spiraling sound that Lloyd was wowing the hippies with at the time – and considering that this set was recorded live at the Fillmore, there were an awful lot of hippies present to be wowed! But the set's also got a charm that lives long past its time – thanks to an expansive vision from Lloyd on flute and tenor, and from Jarrett on piano too. Titles include "Sunday Morning", "Love-in", "Tribal Dance", and "Temple Bells". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono red and purple label pressing. Cover has light wear.)

Charles LloydManhattan Stories – Live At Judson Hall/Live At Slugs Saloon ... CD
Resonance, 1965. Used 2 CDs ... $19.99
Never-heard music from the great Charles Lloyd – two well-recorded live sets from the 60s, both with a very unusual group! The lineup has Lloyd on tenor, soprano, and flute, working with frequent partner Gabor Szabo on guitar – but the rest of the quartet also features Ron Carter on bass and Pete LaRoca on drums – two players who really have an open, laidback way of letting the music flow! All tracks are nice and long, and Lloyd is wonderfully expressive – maybe even more so than on his studio records from the period – with these long, soulful, spiritual solos that almost make us feel like he's picked up the torch from the recently-departed Eric Dolphy – especially in the way that Dolphy would spin things out in a live setting. The set features two versions of "Lady Gabor", both a bit different – plus the titles "How Can I Tell You", "Slug's Blues", "Sweet Georgia Bright", and "Dream Weaver". CD

Blue Note, 2022. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A sublime setting for the sound of Charles Lloyd – a really special trio record, done with Bill Frisell on guitar and Thomas Morgan on bass – a group who work in a really open, airy style that really lets the tenor and flute of Lloyd stretch out and do some amazing things! The format is maybe not that different for Frisell, but makes for this great chapter in Lloyd's career – part of his continued inventiveness in later decades – which have almost proved to be more vibrant than the early years of his time on record. Tracks are nice and long – and titles include the originals "Dorotea's Studio", "Beyond Darkness", and "Song My Lady Sings" – plus a fantastic take on Billy Strayhorn's "Blood Count". CD

✨✧ Charles LloydForest Flower ... LP
Atlantic, 1966. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A famous album – and for good reason too! The set's something of a landmark in spiritual jazz from the 60s – and it features a classic live performance from Charles Lloyd, recorded at the Monterey Jazz Festival – almost as a distillation and popularization of ideas that were brewing in the music of John Coltrane, Eric Dolphy, and others! The group here features a young Keith Jarrett on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, and Jack DeJohnette on drums – all flowing magnificently with Lloyd's work on tenor and flute – in an open-ended groove that draws on modal rhythms for inspiration, and which features solos that stretch out, but never go "outside"! The classic performances of "Forest Flower" takes up all of side one – with a dreamy drifting quality that has Jarrett at his best – and side two features a version of his "Sorcery", plus McBee's "Song Of Her", and a version of "East Of The Sun". LP, Vinyl record album
(Broadway label stereo pressing. Cover has some gloss wrinkles.)

Cannonball AdderleyCannonball Adderley's Fiddler On The Roof ... LP
Capitol, Mid 60s. Very Good+ ... $13.99
Once again, Cannonball Adderley proves the old jazz adage – it's not the song, but the singer – as he breathes fantastic new life here into a set of tunes from the musical Fiddler on the Roof! Yet in thinking of the music, there's also a special sort of genius – as there's some exotic currents in most of the melodies, which may be why the young producer David Axelrod chose the tracks for the set – as they've got the same blend of hardbop and exotic elements that you'll hear on some of the original tunes by this group. The lineup is great – Nat Adderley on cornet, Charles Lloyd on reeds, Joe Zawinul on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums – and the tones of Cannon and Lloyd are great together – and the make the best songs sound like strange Eastern-tinged jazz numbers. Tunes include "To Life", "Fiddler On The Roof", "Cajvalach", "Sewing Machine", "Matchmaker", and "Now I Have Everything". LP, Vinyl record album
(70s red label pressing. Cover has surface & edge wear, old price sticker remnant.)

Gerald ClaytonBells On Sand ... CD
Blue Note, 2022. New Copy ... $12.99 13.99
Pianist Gerald Clayton has always been a musician who's followed his own path in music – making different-sounding records right from the start – but it's also clear that he's really finding his way ahead in recent years, as this second album for Blue Note will attest! Clayton has a very spacious approach to the piano – not one that's sleepy or uncareful – but instead this way of waiting, thinking, and building the sound up in just the right way – much more rhythmic at the core than an ECM pianist might sound, as there's a lot of organic energy in the music next to contributions from John Clayton on bass, and Justin Brown on drums – pushed even further at times when vocalist Maro joins the group, or saxophonist Charles Lloyd sits in. Titles include "Peace Invocation", "Water's Edge", "Daumunt De Tu Nomes Les Flors", "That Roy", "Rip", and "There Is Music Where You're Going My Friends" – the last of which might be a good way to sum up Clayton's journey! Chico HamiltonChico Hamilton Plays Selections From Bye Bye Birdie & Irma La Douce ... LP
Columbia, Early 60s. Near Mint- ... $19.99 24.99
Forget the format – as the album's one of those jazz-meets-show albums from the early 60s – and just focus on the sound – as Chico Hamilton really knows how to make the music groovy! The group here is an unusual lineup with Charles Lloyd on flute and sax, plus guitar by Harry Pope, bass by Bobby Haynes, and cello from Nat Gershmann – working with Hamilton in an inventive set of rhythms that really opens up the tunes, while also allowing Lloyd to add a few exotic touches. The best tunes pick up on the modal groove that Chico was sneaking into his work – and titles include "Our Language Of Love", "A Lot Of Living To Do", "Baby Talk To Me", "She's Got The Lot", and "From A Prison Cell". ✨✧ Larry CoryellBarefoot Boy ... CD
Flying Dutchman/BGP (UK), 1972. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of Larry Coryell's greatest albums ever! Barefoot Boy is a much more expansive session than some of Coryell's others, fueled in part by the spiritual intensity of the Impulse Records generation. It's got a momentum that's pretty darn exciting throughout – but the compositions are nice and long, which gives the players plenty of space to explore. Personnel includes Steve Marcus on tenor and soprano sax, Mike Mandel on piano, Roy Haynes on drums, and Larry Killian on congas – working with Coryell on long trippy tracks that remind us a bit of 60s work by Chico Hamilton, Charles Lloyd, and Gabor Szabo. Titles include "Call To The Higher Consciousness", "The Great Escape", and "Gypsy Queen". CD

Impulse, Early 60s. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A pivotal album for Chico – one that has him working with his hip group that included Charles Lloyd and Gabor Szabo, both of whom take Chico into a modal mode that would completely transform his sound! Lloyd's the center star on the album's version of his own "Forest Flower" – done here in "sunrise" and "sunset" passages – but it's really Chico's increasingly offbeat sense of rhythm that allows Lloyd and Szabo to develop their intense solos and searching grooves. Other titles include "Mallet Dance", "Love Song To A Baby", "Man From Two Worlds", and "Child's Play". LP, Vinyl record album

Teensville (Australia), Mid 60s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Groovy music from the mid 60s – a fantastic follow-up to the other volumes in this excellent series – and like the rest, a tremendous showcase for rare pop gems that we never would have heard otherwise! As the notes are quick to point out, most of these singers are artists who aren't trying to jump on the British Invasion bandwagon – and instead stretch out from earlier male pop modes – mixing bits of rock instrumentation with fuller arrangements and great studio touches – often with currents that seem to point the way towards Sunshine Pop styles to come, and maybe echo modes of The Beach Boys a lot more than The Beatles! The CD has a whopping 35 tracks in all – and titles include "It Comes & Goes" b Mike Berry, "I Can't Stop Myself" by Lemme B Good, "Sunshine Sweetheart" by Kenny Chandler, "When You Ask About Love" by Johnny Peters, "Miss Temptation" by Ray Lynn, "Blue Ribbons" by Peter Ford, "Give Me Enough Love" by Vern McEntire, "Lay Down Your Arms" by Grady Lloyd, "I Could Conquer The World" by Don Charles, "Melony" by Buddy Wayne, and "Just A Boy In Love" by Ray Whitely. Cannonball Adderley with David Axelrod production – a combination that couldn't miss back in the 60s! In keeping with the success of the Mercy Mercy Mercy album done with Axelrod, Capitol did everything they could to catch Cannonball in a live setting – a great move, given the open, soulful energy his group had in the format – crowd-pleasing, but always plenty darn creative too! Added to the mix here is some nice production by David Axelrod, capturing all the right moments in all the right ways – especially when Joe Zawinul steps up to take some sweet solos on the keys – and the great Charles Lloyd serves up some mighty nice work on flute and tenor sax. Other players include Nat Adderley on cornet, Sam Jones on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums – and titles include "The Song My Lady Sings", "Little Boy With The Sad Eyes", "Work Song", and "Sweet Georgia Bright".
