Charles LloydManhattan Stories – Live At Judson Hall/Live At Slugs Saloon (180 gram pressing) (2021 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Resonance, 1965. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... On July 17, 2021
Never-heard music from the great Charles Lloyd – two well-recorded live sets from the 60s, both with a very unusual group! The lineup has Lloyd on tenor, soprano, and flute, working with frequent partner Gabor Szabo on guitar – but the rest of the quartet also features Ron Carter on bass and Pete LaRoca on drums – two players who really have an open, laidback way of letting the music flow! All tracks are nice and long, and Lloyd is wonderfully expressive – maybe even more so than on his studio records from the period – with these long, soulful, spiritual solos that almost make us feel like he's picked up the torch from the recently-departed Eric Dolphy – especially in the way that Dolphy would spin things out in a live setting. The set features two versions of "Lady Gabor", both a bit different – plus the titles "How Can I Tell You", "Slug's Blues", "Sweet Georgia Bright", and "Dream Weaver". (Note: This item is not for sale online until noon on Saturday, July 17. It is in limited supply – and by nature of the Record Store Day rules it will be offered for sale first to customers who visit the Dusty Groove retail outlet in Chicago the morning of Saturday, July 17. Charles LloydMirror ... CD
ECM (Germany), 2010. Used ... $12.99
Beautiful work from Charles Lloyd – a set of compelling originals mixed with standards, both old and new, performed in a laidback style that really makes the most of his wonderful tone! Lloyd was a player who was great from the start – but in recent years, he seems to have even deepened his sound more strongly – finding notes on the saxophone that few others could match, in ways that are similar to the levels that Archie Shepp hit during his maturing years. The cooled-off setting of the album works perfectly to highlight this great side of Lloyd's talents – and backing is subtle, and handled by the trio of Jason Moran on piano, Reuben Rogers on bass, and Eric Harland on drums. Titles include "Caroline No", "I Fall In Love Too Easily", "Monk's Mood", "Mirror", "Ruby My Dear", "Lift Every Voice & Sing", "Desolation Song", and "Tagi". CD

Charles LloydSwiss Radio Days Vol 46 – Montreux Jazz Festival 1967 ... CD
TCB (Switzerland), 1967. Used 2CDs ... $16.99
A really fantastic live performance from the Charles Lloyd group of the late 60s – a double-length set that's a wonderful complement to their classic albums on Atlantic Records! The group is great – a young Keith Jarrett on piano, Ron McClure on bass, and Jack DeJohnette on drums – fantastic partners for the freewheeling style of Lloyd on both tenor and flute, as the group work here through modes and melodies that feel years ahead of their time – all spun out on these long, extended performances that are mindblowing throughout! Swiss Radio recorded the material in 1967, and we wonder why it's taken so long to come out – as the whole thing is completely essential, and features long takes on "Love Ship", "Days & Nights Waiting", "Lady Gabor", "Forest Flower", "Love Song To A Baby", and "Sweet Georgia Bright". Charles LloydVoice In The Night ... LP
ECM (Germany), 1999. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $31.99 35.99
A key album from the later Charles Lloyd years on ECM – from a moment when the saxophonist seemed to be completely reinvigorated, and exploring very different territories than his music of the 60s! Part of the sound has Lloyd hitting a few ECM vibes – hard not to do with a group that features John Abercrombie on guitar, Dave Holland on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – but there's also moments that are looser and freer, too – really showing the individuality that's always been such a hallmark of Charles' recordings, and which here is hardly going to cowtow to any sort of stricter style for the label. The tenor work is superb – very sinuous and constantly exploring, but never overindulgent – and titles include "Voice In The Night", "Dorotea's Studio", "Homage", "Pocket Full Of Blues", "Forest Flower Sunrise/Sunset", and "A Flower Is A Lovesome Thing". A really obscure 70s session from Charles Lloyd – cut for A&M at a time when he was really letting his hair down! The set's got some great production from pop wiz Gary Usher – and players include Woody Theus on percussion, Gabor Szabo on guitar, and Roberto Miranda on bass. And the set even has some unusual vocal moments – including work from Beach Boys Al Jardine, Carl Wilson, and Mike Love – in addition to some 12 string guitar from Roger McGuinn! CD

Charles Lloyd & The MarvelsTone Poem ... CD
Blue Note, 2021. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
Beautiful work from the Marvels group of Charles Lloyd – a combo that not only features his own great sounds on tenor and flute, but also the very strong presence of Bill Frisell on guitar! Although Lloyd recorded famously with guitar players back in his early years, the sound here is very different – filtered through the sonic explorations of his albums for ECM, and inflected with that sense of color that only seems to get stronger and stronger in the work of Frisell over the years. That quality is also augmented by use of the steel guitar in the quintet, handled by Greg Leisz – alongside the bass of Reuben Rogers and drums of Eric Harland. Titles include remakes of two 60s gems – Ornette Coleman's "Rambling" and Gabor Szabo's "Lady Gabor" – plus the originals "Tone Poem", "Dismal Swamp", and "Prayer". CD

✨✧ Charles LloydForest Flower – Charles Lloyd At Monterey ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1966. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A famous album – and for good reason too! The set's something of a landmark in spiritual jazz from the 60s – and it features a classic live performance from Charles Lloyd, recorded at the Monterey Jazz Festival – almost as a distillation and popularization of ideas that were brewing in the music of John Coltrane, Eric Dolphy, and others! The group here features a young Keith Jarrett on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, and Jack DeJohnette on drums – all flowing magnificently with Lloyd's work on tenor and flute – in an open-ended groove that draws on modal rhythms for inspiration, and which features solos that stretch out, but never go "outside"! The classic performances of "Forest Flower" takes up all of side one – with a dreamy drifting quality that has Jarrett at his best – and side two features a version of his "Sorcery", plus McBee's "Song Of Her", and a version of "East Of The Sun". ECM (Germany), Late 80s/1990s. Used 5 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Beautiful music from Charles Lloyd – a great package that brings together all the important Norwegian recordings the tenorist made for ECM in the 90s – music that really helped renew interest in this legendary player! The style here is wonderful – laidback and flowing, in a mode that almost returns Lloyd to that very strong sound he had with Atlantic Records in the late 60s – perhaps a bit less righteous here, but still very powerful and spiritual – at a level that also even seems to bring a new sort of life to that of his bandmates too! The players are a pretty tight lineup throughout – with Bobo Stenson on piano on all tracks, plus Palle Danielsson or Anders Jormin on bass, and either Billy Hart, Ralph Peterson, and Jon Christensen on drums. The set features five full albums, plus a booklet of notes – the titles Fish Out Of Water, Notes From Big Sur, The Call, All My Relations, and Canto. CD

✨✧ Charles Lloyd8 – Kindred Spirits – Live From The Lobero (CD/DVD) ... CD
Blue Note, 2020. New Copy CD & DVD ... Out Of Stock
Few players have the scope and depth of Charles Lloyd over the space of so many decades – and here, once again, Lloyd reminds us that his longevity in jazz has everything to do with the continued growth of his music – and not just the fact that he's stuck around for so long! The sound is wonderful – this 21st Century extrapolation of spiritual currents that Lloyd first unleashed in his early solo years, and which hit a very focused, clear vibe here in a quintet lineup that includes Julian Lage on guitar, Gerald Clayton on paino, Reuben Rogers on bass, and Eric Harland on drums. Lage's solos are as searing as Lloyd's, but in a very different way – and the mix of his tones and the sharper reeds is beautiful, and spun out over very long tracks that include "Dream Weaver", "Requiem", "La Llorna", and "Part 5 – Ruminations". CD

ECM, 1993. Used ... Out Of Stock
Quite a bit different than the famous Charles Lloyd work of the 60s – but a nicely introspective session that showcases his quieter sounds of later years! The date was recorded in Oslo, with a relatively laidback feel – by a quartet that features Lloyd on tenor, Bobo Stenson on piano, Anders Jorman on bass, and Billy Hart on drums – all players who really get some of their own space and time for expression on the record, working with Lloyd more in the sense of a small cadre of co-mingled players, rather than the structure of a traditional combo. Titles include "Imke", "Song", "Dwija", "Glimpse", "Nocturne", and "The Blessing". CD

Eric AlexanderLeap Of Faith ... CD
Giant Step Arts, 2019. New Copy ... $12.99 20.00
The great Eric Alexander in a trio mode – soaring out with a lot more space and soul than some of his albums with a pianist – and that's saying a lot, given the wonderfully soulful sound of that work too! The style is a mode that Alexander has explored a bit over the years, but which really comes out with great force here – and opens up a sharper, more biting tone than you might be used to hearing from the saxophonist over his 25+ years of recording! It's almost as if Eric's awoken with a whole new sense of spirit – and we mean that quite literally, as the album has Alexander arising as a very powerful saxophonist in a spiritual tradition – with a sound that's still very individual, but which has links to a legacy that includes Pharoah Sanders and Charles Lloyd – something we never would have said about Eric just a few years ago. The other trio members are key to the sound, too – Doug Weiss on bass and Jonathan Blake on drums – and titles include "Corazon Perdido", "Luquitas", "Mars", "Magyar", "Big Richard", "Second Impression", and "Frenzy". ✨✧ Chico HamiltonMan From Two Worlds (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Impulse, Early 60s. Used ... $11.99
A pivotal album for Chico – one that has him working with his hip group that included Charles Lloyd and Gabor Szabo, both of whom take Chico into a modal mode that would completely transform his sound! Lloyd's the center star on the album's version of his own "Forest Flower" – done here in "sunrise" and "sunset" passages – but it's really Chico's increasingly offbeat sense of rhythm that allows Lloyd and Szabo to develop their intense solos and searching grooves. Other titles include "Mallet Dance", "Love Song To A Baby", "Man From Two Worlds", and "Child's Play". Plus, the CD reissue features 4 bonus tracks – including "Transfusion", "Passin Thru", "Lady Gabor", and "Lonesome Child". CD

Messed-up funky guitar from Harvey Mandel – a little bit blues, a little bit rock, but also pretty darn funky overall – and a set that's got all the freewheeling fuzz of his best work from the time! In a way, his records like this are even better than his first few, as he's getting a lot tighter on the strings – which means that he can pick up the groove a bit more, and really head for some nicely jazzy funk material! That side is nicely emphasized by some work from reedman Charles Lloyd – who was also letting down his hair a bit at the time – and titles include "The Divining Rod", "Uno Ino", "Ode To The Owl", "Levitation", "Bite The Electric Eel", and "Lynda Love". ✨✧ Larry CoryellBarefoot Boy ... CD
Flying Dutchman/BGP (UK), 1972. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of Larry Coryell's greatest albums ever! Barefoot Boy is a much more expansive session than some of Coryell's others, fueled in part by the spiritual intensity of the Impulse Records generation. It's got a momentum that's pretty darn exciting throughout – but the compositions are nice and long, which gives the players plenty of space to explore. Personnel includes Steve Marcus on tenor and soprano sax, Mike Mandel on piano, Roy Haynes on drums, and Larry Killian on congas – working with Coryell on long trippy tracks that remind us a bit of 60s work by Chico Hamilton, Charles Lloyd, and Gabor Szabo. Titles include "Call To The Higher Consciousness", "The Great Escape", and "Gypsy Queen". CD
