Charles Lloyd8 – Kindred Spirits – Live From The Lobero (180 gram 2LP set with bonus DVD) ... LP
Blue Note, 2020. New Copy 2LP ... $39.99 42.98
Few players have the scope and depth of Charles Lloyd over the space of so many decades – and here, once again, Lloyd reminds us that his longevity in jazz has everything to do with the continued growth of his music – and not just the fact that he's stuck around for so long! The sound is wonderful – this 21st Century extrapolation of spiritual currents that Lloyd first unleashed in his early solo years, and which hit a very focused, clear vibe here in a quintet lineup that includes Julian Lage on guitar, Gerald Clayton on paino, Reuben Rogers on bass, and Eric Harland on drums. Lage's solos are as searing as Lloyd's, but in a very different way – and the mix of his tones and the sharper reeds is beautiful, and spun out over very long tracks that include "Dream Weaver", "Requiem", "La Llorna", and "Part 5 – Ruminations". LP, Vinyl record album
(3-sided vinyl pressing, done beautifully, with 12" booklet of notes – and bonus DVD of the performance!)

Charles LloydCharles Lloyd In The Soviet Union ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1967. Used ... $19.99
Charles Lloyd in the Soviet Union – blowing beautifully on an open-ended set that must have really loosened things up in Red Square! The album features Lloyd at his freewheeling 60s best – working in his group with Keith Jarrett on piano, Ron McClure on bass, and Jack DeJohnette on drums – on some of those great long, very open numbers they do so well! Lloyd plays both tenor and flute – both with strongly spiritual tones that work great with the modal touches of the rhythm section – and titles include "Days & Nights Waiting", "Sweet Georgia Bright", "Love Song To A Baby", and "Tribal Dance". Charles LloydDream Weaver (Japanese pressing) ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1966. Used ... $14.99
A classic set from reedman Charles Lloyd – a set that really pushes forward all the experiments he'd begun in the Chico Hamilton group – and shows a bold move forward for rhythms in 60s jazz! The tracks are long, and spiral out wonderfully – but in ways that are different than those used by other creators of the time – like Eric Dolphy or John Coltrane. Even though leading the group on tenor and flute, Lloyd's got a real sense of rhythm to his playing – echoes of the Hamilton group – but set loose with a stellar quartet of younger players – including Keith Jarrett on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, and Jack DeJohnette on drums – all perfect choices for inventive music like this! The standout cut is the amazing "Sombrero Sam", a tight little groover that we never tire of – and one that has Jarrett sounding much more in the pocket than you'd ever imagine – and other tracks include "Dream Weaver", "Autumn Sequence", and "Bird Flight". CD

Charles LloydMoon Man ... LP
Kapp, Early 70s. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $11.99
Weird bit of hippy dippy jazz from Charles Lloyd, with vocals on most tracks, and lots of groovy lyrics about "the moonman", "computer man", and "heavy kharma". The vocalist is not credited, but most of the lyrics are written by Lloyd, although we don't really think he's singing. The backing is still fairly groovy and jazzy, but the record's quite different than many of Lloyd's other LPs. Titles include "Hejira", "Moonman", "Sermon", and "Sweet Juvenia". Charles LloydNirvana ... CD
Columbia (Japan), 1968. Used ... $16.99
Lovely work from Charles Lloyd – recorded at the point when he was just pushing off from Chico Hamilton's group, and before he got too noodly for his own good! Side one of the record features Lloyd with his own group – jazzing it up in a mix of flute, guitar, and percussion on a number of short tracks that have a light and breezy feel. There's a nice dose of bossa in the set, plus some of the other freer rhythmic styles that Lloyd and Hamilton experimented with together at the time – but all of the tracks have a strong rhythmic pulse, and never lose their groove for too much experimentation. Side two features two wonderful tracks with Hamilton's group at a point when Lloyd was still working with the ensemble – both long tracks with a modal pulse and a great deal of spirituality – again free, but never too much so! A nice little album – with tracks that include "Island Blues", "Carcara", "Long Time Baby", "One For Joan", and "Freedom Traveler". CD

Charles LloydVoice In The Night ... CD
ECM (Germany), 1999. Used ... $8.99
A key album from the later Charles Lloyd years on ECM – from a moment when the saxophonist seemed to be completely reinvigorated, and exploring very different territories than his music of the 60s! Part of the sound has Lloyd hitting a few ECM vibes – hard not to do with a group that features John Abercrombie on guitar, Dave Holland on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – but there's also moments that are looser and freer, too – really showing the individuality that's always been such a hallmark of Charles' recordings, and which here is hardly going to cowtow to any sort of stricter style for the label. The tenor work is superb – very sinuous and constantly exploring, but never overindulgent – and titles include "Voice In The Night", "Dorotea's Studio", "Homage", "Pocket Full Of Blues", "Forest Flower Sunrise/Sunset", and "A Flower Is A Lovesome Thing". ✨✧ Charles LloydNight In Copenhagen ... CD
Blue Note, 1983. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great return to the limelight for reedman Charles Lloyd – heard here in one of his most open, expressive settings in years – with all the best exotic touches of his famous early years still very much intact! Lloyd plays tenor and flute, plus a bit of Chinese oboe as well – an instrument that really underscores some of the more inventive qualities in his music, and which works well with some of the modal energies in the set. The great Michel Perucciani makes a key appearance here on piano – and shades the tunes with a sensitive sound that also helps Lloyd find the new directions he'd take strongly in years to come – and the remaining group features Palle Danielsson on bass and Son Ship Theus on drums. Bobby McFerrin sings in a few spots, but at a level that's hipper than his hits – and titles include "Lotus Land", "Lady Day", "Of Course Of Course", "Night Blooming Jasmine", and "El Encanto". CD

TCB (Switzerland), 1967. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A really fantastic live performance from the Charles Lloyd group of the late 60s – a double-length set that's a wonderful complement to their classic albums on Atlantic Records! The group is great – a young Keith Jarrett on piano, Ron McClure on bass, and Jack DeJohnette on drums – fantastic partners for the freewheeling style of Lloyd on both tenor and flute, as the group work here through modes and melodies that feel years ahead of their time – all spun out on these long, extended performances that are mindblowing throughout! Swiss Radio recorded the material in 1967, and we wonder why it's taken so long to come out – as the whole thing is completely essential, and features long takes on "Love Ship", "Days & Nights Waiting", "Lady Gabor", "Forest Flower", "Love Song To A Baby", and "Sweet Georgia Bright". Eric AlexanderLeap Of Faith ... CD
Giant Step Arts, 2019. New Copy ... $19.99 20.00
The great Eric Alexander in a trio mode – soaring out with a lot more space and soul than some of his albums with a pianist – and that's saying a lot, given the wonderfully soulful sound of that work too! The style is a mode that Alexander has explored a bit over the years, but which really comes out with great force here – and opens up a sharper, more biting tone than you might be used to hearing from the saxophonist over his 25+ years of recording! It's almost as if Eric's awoken with a whole new sense of spirit – and we mean that quite literally, as the album has Alexander arising as a very powerful saxophonist in a spiritual tradition – with a sound that's still very individual, but which has links to a legacy that includes Pharoah Sanders and Charles Lloyd – something we never would have said about Eric just a few years ago. The other trio members are key to the sound, too – Doug Weiss on bass and Jonathan Blake on drums – and titles include "Corazon Perdido", "Luquitas", "Mars", "Magyar", "Big Richard", "Second Impression", and "Frenzy". Larry CoryellBarefoot Boy ... CD
Flying Dutchman/BGP (UK), 1972. New Copy ... $8.99 14.99
One of Larry Coryell's greatest albums ever! Barefoot Boy is a much more expansive session than some of Coryell's others, fueled in part by the spiritual intensity of the Impulse Records generation. It's got a momentum that's pretty darn exciting throughout – but the compositions are nice and long, which gives the players plenty of space to explore. Personnel includes Steve Marcus on tenor and soprano sax, Mike Mandel on piano, Roy Haynes on drums, and Larry Killian on congas – working with Coryell on long trippy tracks that remind us a bit of 60s work by Chico Hamilton, Charles Lloyd, and Gabor Szabo. Titles include "Call To The Higher Consciousness", "The Great Escape", and "Gypsy Queen". CD

Harvey MandelSnake ... LP
Janus/Tiger Bay (UK), 1972. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $18.99
Messed-up funky guitar from Harvey Mandel – a little bit blues, a little bit rock, but also pretty darn funky overall – and a set that's got all the freewheeling fuzz of his best work from the time! In a way, his records like this are even better than his first few, as he's getting a lot tighter on the strings – which means that he can pick up the groove a bit more, and really head for some nicely jazzy funk material! That side is nicely emphasized by some work from reedman Charles Lloyd – who was also letting down his hair a bit at the time – and titles include "The Divining Rod", "Uno Ino", "Ode To The Owl", "Levitation", "Bite The Electric Eel", and "Lynda Love". ✨✧ Chico HamiltonMan From Two Worlds ... LP
Impulse, Early 60s. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A pivotal album for Chico – one that has him working with his hip group that included Charles Lloyd and Gabor Szabo, both of whom take Chico into a modal mode that would completely transform his sound! Lloyd's the center star on the album's version of his own "Forest Flower" – done here in "sunrise" and "sunset" passages – but it's really Chico's increasingly offbeat sense of rhythm that allows Lloyd and Szabo to develop their intense solos and searching grooves. Other titles include "Mallet Dance", "Love Song To A Baby", "Man From Two Worlds", and "Child's Play". LP, Vinyl record album

Excellent grooviness – and typical of the mad instrumental LPs that showed up on Impulse when they weren't cutting high-minded jazz! The record has a nice mix of easy funky jazz and pop psychedelia – performed by a range of groovy players conducted by Bob Thiele, and featuring Tom Scott & The California Dreamers, Bill Plummer, and Gabor Szabo. There's a nice cool version of "Fakin It", plus Charles Lloyd's "Forest Flower", "Light My Fire", and "Eight Miles High". Very groovy! LP, Vinyl record album
