Lee MorganCharisma ... CD
Blue Note, 1966. Used ... $19.99
One of our favorite albums from Lee Morgan – a soaringly soulful session that was recorded in the mid 60s, and finally issued by Blue Note at the end of the decade! The vibe here really follows from the lyrically inventive, post-Sidewinder mid 60s Morgan years – with a spirit that's similar to Lee's work on the albums Gigolo or Tom Cat, in a style that mixes in a fair bit more modal and Latin influences to the rhythms. The lineup is totally great too – a sextet that features Hank Mobley, Jackie McLean, Cedar Walton, Paul Chambers, and Billy Higgins – the last of whom provides tremendous rhythms that are as fluidly inventive as Morgan's playing and the writing of Hank Mobley, who contributed most of the tunes to the set. Titles include "Hey Chico", "The Double Up", and "The Murphy Man" – and the record also includes a nice version of Duke Pearson's "Sweet Honey Bee". CD

Peter GabrielDeutsches Album (aka Security) ... LP
Charisma (Germany), 1982. Near Mint- ... $11.99 19.99
An all-German version of Peter Gabriel's fourth album! A record that some might call the last truly great Peter Gabriel album – and a key cap to his excellent initial solo run! The album's got a deeper feel than before – slightly richer colors, more spiritual themes, and arguably more of a sense of majesty – almost an echo of some of the Native American modes explored by Laurie Anderson, who was then a recent collaborator of Gabriel! Instrumentation builds a bit more than before – with less guitars in parts, more percussive bits, and some funkier elements at the bottom that aren't exactly funky – more just a punch in force from the ground up. Gabriel's definitely feeling a sense of power here. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Cannonball AdderleyWhy Am I Treated So Bad? ... LP
Capitol, Late 60s. Very Good ... Just Sold Out!
If you ever needed a key example of the genius of Cannonball on Capitol Records, this tight little set may well be it! The record's got all the best elements of a Cannon classic firmly in place – production by David Axelrod, electric piano by Joe Zawinul, and some tremendously soulful work from Cannon and Nat Adderley on their respective horns – all presented with a sense of relaxed tightness (if we can use such a phrase) that's jaw-droppingly brilliant all the way through! Cannon speaks a bit and pushes the band into action with charisma and warmth caught nicely by Axelrod's recording – and the band grooves on long, snakey tunes that mix equal parts funk and soul jazz together, coming up with the quintessential Adderley groove on nearly every number! Tracks include the seminal "Why Am I Treated So Bad", plus "Mini Mama", "I'm On My Way", "One For Newk", "The Scene", "Yvette", and "The Other Side". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono rainbow label pressing. Cover has a cutout hole, heavy wear and aging, split top seam and spine, splitting in the bottom seam, and stains around the edges.)

Tom BrowneYours Truly ... LP
GRP/Arista, 1981. Very Good+ ... $6.99
A sweet bit of electric funky jazz from Tom Browne – a bit tighter and with more of an 80s groove than some of his earlier work, but still pretty darn nice! Tom's always great – blowing over the top in spare, but well-placed trumpet solos – and the backing on the album shifts between a number of different soulful fusion modes that are all handled pretty strongly, without the traps that other artists would fall into on a record like this. Lead vocals on some of the tracks are by Frank Floyd, Margie Barnes, or Keith John – and the album includes the sweet jazzy groover "Come For The Ride", plus "Fungi Mama/Rebopafunkadiscolypso", "My Latin Sky", "A Message", "Charisma", "Naima", "Lazy Bird", and "Bye Gones". DarondoLet My People Go ... CD
Luv N' Haight, Early 70s. New Copy ... $5.99 16.98
Mad homegrown soul from the enigmatic Darondo – a brief Bay Area star back in the 70s, and also host of TV comedy and children's shows! Darondo only ever saw release of 3 singles, but they're all pretty darn great – a weird mix of funk, soul, and sly slinky grooves – very unique in conception, and with a heady, tripped-out vision that makes us wish he'd recorded more. Luv N Haight have really done Darondo justice with this set – bringing together all 6 tracks from the singles, plus 3 more previously unissued numbers – all in a great package that features words from the man himself, plus some great images from his older TV shows. A near-lost soul figure, but one with enough charisma to fill the careers of other more famous acts! Titles include "How I Got Over", "Let My People Go", "Legs (part 1)", "True", "Didn't I", "I Want Your Love So Bad", "My Momma & My Poppa", "Sure Know How To Love Me", and "Listen To My Song". CD

Fela & Africa 70Shakara (pink vinyl pressing) ... LP
Knitting Factory, 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $32.99 36.99 On January 13, 2023
The cover image here really demonstrates the charisma of Fela at his height – dozens of topless women, kneeling around the maestro and spelling out the number 70 – but to us, the music is what really shows the man's power – a bold, progressive statement of the new energy bubbling up on the African scene – served up here on two amazing side-long tracks! Tony Allen is at the head of the Africa 70 – and his rhythms are already incredibly complex, but always right on the money – mixed with heavy tenor from Igo Chico, great electric piano lines, and a fiercely collaborative sense of energy that makes every move of the entire group come together as one. Titles include "Lady" and "Sakara Oloje" – both completely sublime! LP, Vinyl record album

LTDShine On ... LP
A&M, 1980. Near Mint- ... $6.99
Massively solid boogie work from Jeffrey Osborne and LTD – still grooving beautifully at the end of the 70s, and working here with top-shelf production from Bobby Martin! The set's got that buoyant LTD groove that was a perfect foil for Osborne's soaring vocals – a sound that never fell into the cliches of some of Osborne's later solo work, and which was a perfect match between ensemble funk, dancefloor rhythms, and the charisma of a strong lead singer. There's a few smoother ballads on the set that point the way towards later years, but the bulk of the set is very much in the group's best boogie mode – and titles include "You Gave Me Love", "Lovers Everywhere", "Don'tcha Know", "Shine On", "Where Did We Go Wrong", "Getaway" and "Lady Love". Lee MorganTom Cat ... CD
Blue Note, 1964. Used ... $11.99
One of our top 5 favorite Blue Note records of all time – a bold and powerful session from trumpeter Lee Morgan, but one that sat in the vaults for 15 years before release! The session was recorded around the same time as Morgan's hit The Sidewinder (which eclipsed its release at the time) – but it's got the soaring, searching energy of later Morgan work on records like Sixth Sense or Charisma – a whole new groove at the time, and one that's explored perfectly by a group that includes Jackie McLean on alto sax, Curtis Fuller on trombone, McCoy Tyner on piano, Bob Cranshaw on bass, and Art Blakey on drums. Modal lines come into play with older hardbop and soul jazz modes – and the result is an explosive batch of tunes that resonate with bold power throughout! Nearly all tunes are incredible originals by Lee Morgan – and titles include "Tom Cat", "Exotique", "Twice Around", and the completely captivating "Rigor Mortis". A treasure, and one not to pass up! Columbia/Expansion (UK), 1979. New Copy ... $8.99 16.99
Wonderful work from Pockets – a group who started out more in a jazzy mode, but who here have emerged as a fully-formed, soaringly soulful group that's a perfect fit for the Kalmiba Productions style of the late 70s! As you probably know, Kalimba's the production arm of the Earth Wind & Fire empire – and Pockets fit here right in tight with their groove – a nice little sidebar, definitely with their own spirit – but filled with that sense of perfection that wraps together funk, soul, and jazz with equal emphasis on all three styles! There's some great harmony vocals in the mix too – crafted with the care of contemporaneous groups like Side Effect or Creative Source – and titles include "Your Heart's In Trouble", "Bye Bye", "Catch Me", "So Delicious", "How Do You Think It Feels?", "Charisma", and "Baby Are You Coming Home With Me". Soaring sounds from trumpeter Tom Browne – a younger player who really took the torch, and opened up a new path forward from early 70s electric funk experiments by artists like Donald Byrd and Freddie Hubbard! With work on this set, Browne is clearly the heir apparent to the CTI sound of Hubbard, or the Larry Mizell work at Blue Note by Byrd – and finds a perfect space between jazz and soul throughout – using his horn on grooves that start out in familiar jazz funk and fusion modes, then move into some great 80s groove and old school styles too. 2CD set features 29 tracks in all – including a few mixes from singles – and titles include "Magic (12" mix)", "Throw Down", "Funkin For Jamaica", "I Never Was A Cowboy", "Brother Brother", "Her Silent Smile", "Cruisin", "Rockin Radio", "Mr Business", "Brighter Tomorrow", "Charisma", "Bye Gones (ext rmx)", "Can't Give It Away", "My Latin Sky", "A Message", "Hit Man", "Secret Fantasy (ext)", "Fungi Mama/Bebopafunkadiscolypso", "Midnight Interlude", "Angeline", and "Tighs High". At this point in the early 70s, probably the least hip thing a singer could do would be to hire a a grand pop composer and an orchestra to record a set of standards, but ever the vocal trailblazer, that's what Harry did and it works magically. Epic, 1981. Near Mint- ... $11.99
One of those bright, charismatic Billy Ocean records from a couple years before his massive pop soul crossover – just a sublime 80s club groover that pumps along at a nice mid tempo clip – a real favorite around these parts! This was Billy's debut for Epic and there's plenty of signposts here of his potential to bust out in a big way commercially – it's hooky and insistent, but still plenty soulful, less steeped in pop gloss and with fewer ballads – lean, danceable soul that holds up very, very well. Reprise/Concord, 1962/1964. Used ... $11.99
The great pair of albums by Frank Sinatra backed by Count Basie and his incredible orchestra from the early 60s – Sinatra-Basie from '62 and It Might As Well Be Swing from '64 – together in a single set! Sinatra-Basie is the inaugural effort from the 2 leaders and the stellar orchestra – and it's a great one. Sinatra is as charismatic and loose out front as he's ever been on record, and the Basie & his players swing brilliantly with arrangements by Neal Hefti. Titles include "Pennies From Heaven", "Please Be Kind", "My Kind Of Girl", "Learnin' The Blues", "Nice Work If You Can Get It" and more. It Might As Well Be Swing is simply one of Sinatra's greatest records ever – pure genius all the way through! This one features some incredible arrangements by Quincy Jones that really have a jazzy, syncopated kick to them. This picks up on a seminal beat change in 60s pop, the same sort of gentle snapping groove that you'd find in the best work by Bacharach, a shift that really infuses Frank's vocals with a whole new sound, one that shows that he's ready to keep on growing and growing after being stuck in a Nelson Riddle rut. All tracks are superb – hip 60s pop and show tunes, like "I Believe In You", "Fly Me To the Moon", "More", "The Good Life", "Wives & Lovers", and "I Wanna Be Around". CD

Daptone, 2010. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The fourth album from Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings – solidifying what we learned pretty early on from the indomitable soul spirit that is Sharon and her impeccable combo the Dap-Kings – it's that this is not some retro soul revival novelty act, what they are is the greatest active embodiment of a true soul sound that will never go away! We've always loved that Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings recognize the studio and the stage as different worlds. On stage, Sharon is the possibly the most energetic, charismatic presence you'll ever see and the band brings heft and heat. In the studio, they stretch out and diversify wonderfully, bringing both raw, unpolished funky soul realness to some more stripped down numbers and a full on Stax or Hi level heaviness to the bigger ones. The songs are better and more memorable than ever on this record – with "The Game Gets Old" and "I Learned The Hard Way" (an astoundingly strong one/two punch for the opening minutes) plus "Better Things", "Give It Back", "Money". Includes "Blowin In The Wind" by OV Wright, "Girl From The North Country" by Howard Tate, "The Man In Me" by The Persuations, "Lay lady Lay" by The Isley Brothers, "Emotionally Yours" by The O'Jays, "All Along The Watchtower" by Bobby Womack, "Maggie's Farm" by Soloman Burke, "Mr. Tamborine Man" by Con Funk Shun and more. 20 tracks in all. ✨✧ Miguel Y El ComitePara Hacer Musica – Para Hacer ... CD
Lion, 1971. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Hard grooving, heavily grooving South American rock from Miguel Y El Comite (Miguel & The Committee) from the early 70s – led by Miguel Livichich, who made waves a bit earlier with El Syndikato! The percussion drives the sound pretty well, but the vocals are nicely out front in the mix, where they should be, as their charismatic and inviting as can be – with a nice fuzzed out guitar sound and a killer bass sound. Includes " Para Hacer Musica, Para Hacer...", "No Va Mas (Ya)", "Mi Sol", "Que Me Importa", "Junto Al Mar", "No Ves Que No Cabe", "Candombe Triste", "Hiroshima (1945)", Rompan Todo" and more. One bonus track: "Mala-Mala", a 1972 single b-side. CD

✨✧ Johnny OtisOn With The Show – The Johnny Otis Story Vol 2 1957 to 1974 ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 50s/1960s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A great second volume of pivotal episodes of The Johnny Otis Show from Ace Records and a compilation that represents two eras of Johnny Otis! On With The Show starts out by continuing the story of his late 50s and early 60s R&B years – then segues hard into his grittier funk-honed style of the late 60s and early 70s. The first half starts out right where Vol 1 left off – tracing his good-natured, rollicking R&B. Fittingly, this half of the set effectively ends with '61's "Hand Jive One More Time" and the next track, '67's "Keep The Faith", shows a remarkable transition in style to groove heavy soul and funk. It's all great – be it his charismatic riffs on the Bo Diddley beat that so characterized the "Hand Jive" era, to the ribald funk of "Signifying Monkey" and beyond. 24 tracks in all and featuring a great set of notes. Titles include "Good Golly", "The Jelly Roll", "The New Bo Diddley", "Let's Love It Up", "Banana Peels", "The Watts Breakaway", "Cold Shot", "Country Girl", "I Got The Walkin' Blues", "Cuttin' Up", "Jaws", "Bye Bye Baby (Until We Meet Again)" and more. Sinatra-Basie is the inaugural effort from the 2 leaders and the stellar orchestra – and it's a great one.
