✨✧ Kosuke MineOut Of Chaos (Japanese paper sleeve version) ... CD
East Wind (Japan), 1974. Used ... Out Of Stock
Great work from this lesser-known Japanese tenor player – an underrated genius with a style that's at once free-searching and introspective! Even though he plays tenor, Kosuke Mine's tone reminds us a lot of Jackie McLean on some of his best Blue Note sides – kind of leaning into itself as a way of pushing the sound forward – but also really reaching out with some post-Coltrane freedoms, especially on the tracks that have a sharply modal groove! The album only features 3 long tracks – held together tightly by rhythms from Masabumi Kikuchi on piano, Tsutomu Okada on bass, and Motohiko Hino on drums – and titles include "Recollection", "Little Abi", and "Cross Wind". CD

Chico Science & Nacao ZumbiDa Lama Ao Caos ... CD
Chaos (Brazil), Early 90s. Used ... $12.99
A mad mix of loud guitar, wild samples, and heavy Brazilian percussion – all nicely topped with the soulful vocals of Chico Science! The record's one of the group's earlier ones, and it's filled with a sense of raw power and experimentation that easily demonstrates why the band grabbed so much attention so quickly. Forget all those cliches you keep hearing about the postmodern power of Tropicalia – this stuff's equally as complex, and filled with bits and pieces you wouldn't even imagine! Titles include "Da Lama Ao Caos", "Salusatiano Song", "Riso Flora", "Coco Dub", "Rios, Pontes & Overdrives", and "A Cidade", which has a nice little snippet from Mark E Smith! CD

BlundettoBad Bad Things (limited edition including stickers & poster) ... CD
Heavenly Sweetness (France), 2010. Used ... $14.99
The first full length from Blundetto – a Parisian radio programmer and artist showing impeccable taste here – with a slyly dubby and reggae & soul influenced groove and featuring collaborations with The Budos Band horns, Chico Mann, Tommy Guerrero, Lateef The Truthspeaker, Shawn Lee, Genreal Elektricks and Hindi Zahra! Blundetto shares compositional credits with the guest, and it has the feel of collaboration with that atmopherically soulful core groove. Really nice work for the Heavenly Sweetness label! Titles including the Blundetto cover of the Bob James classic "Nautilus" plus "Voices", "Mustang", "Mi Condena", "Cuban Shirt", "Party Animals". "White Birds", "Ken Park", "My One Girl", "Bad BadThings" and "Sunset Stroll". CD

Bossa IVForget Your Name ... LP
2019. New Copy ... $6.99
A charming, joyous batch of tunes from Bossa IV – not really the bossa-sounding project you might assume from the name and from the fact Dusty Groove is stocking it, but a timeless and melodic batch of indie rock we'd put up there some of of the best of out there. This is Chicagoan Matthew McGarry's third album as Bossa IV, and he continues to do nearly everything himself, and impressively so, bearing influences from the 60s onward, but he's got such a singular style that you can't pinpoint them directly. We don't stock a lot of contemporary rock at the ol' DG...Bossa IV is just that irresistible! Includes "Protest (Down Pat)", "Sudden Deafness", "Total Chaos", "Paper View", "Forever Numb", "Ethnograph (Ra CBE)", "Grim Reaper", "Karaoke (ACH)", "Versa" and "Forget Your Name". Billy HarperBilly Harper Quintet – Antibes 75 (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Sam Records (France), 1975. New Copy ... $34.99 39.99
Never-issued live material from one of our favorite jazz musicians of all time – the mighty Billy Harper, a tenor saxophonist who took the initial legacy of John Coltrane, then really ran with it in the 70s! The album is stunning right from the very first note – a perfect encapsulation of the way that Harper worked at his best – balancing order and chaos, dark and light, all with a searing, searching style that was brimming over with a sense of righteous mission! The group features the tremendous Virgil Jones on trumpet – making a really spectacular appearance, and showing the hippest side of his talents – next to Joe Bonner on piano, David Friesen on bass, and Malcolm Pinson on drums – an unusual group for Harper, and one that really makes the album stand out from his other gems of the 70s. The set was recorded live at the jazz festival in Antibes in 1975 – and each side of the record features an extended performance of a key Harper tune – the soaring "Cry Of Hunger", and the pulsating rhythmic tune "Croquet Ballet", which was first debuted on Lee Morgan's last session. LP, Vinyl record album
(Limited edition of 2000 copies! Beautiful pressing – 180 gram vinyl, pressed at Pallas, in a flipback cover, with insert!)

Andrzej KorzynskiPanna Nikt (with bonus tracks) ... CD
GAD (Poland), 1996. New Copy ... $16.99 18.99
A spare, electric soundtrack from Andrzej Korzynski – done for a mid 90s film directed by Andrzej Wada, and featuring lots of keyboards played by Korzynski himself! The music isn't as wild as some of Andrzej's previous records, but there's a nice sense of variety on the tracks – which are usually very spare, sometimes spooky, and often have added keyboards from Jerzy Suchocki! At times, these strange voices come through the mix – maybe dialog from the film, maybe the sound of spirits in the background – amidst titles that include "Balkon", "Chaos", "Samotnosc", "Wies", "Modlitwa", "Dzigi 1", "Pycha I Bogactwo", and "Jaka Jestes Piekna 2". CD features five bonus tracks too! CD

Gerry MulliganWhat Is There To Say? ... LP
Columbia, 1959. Very Good ... $9.99
A beautiful pairing of the baritone of Gerry Mulligan and the trumpet of Art Farmer – brought together wonderfully in this piano-less session that has both players effortlessly carving lines in the open space of the studio. Rhythm is by the team of Bill Crow on bass and Dave Bailey on drums – both of whom snap along a harder groove than you'll hear on most of Mulligan's mid 50s work – making for a set that's got as much going on at the bottom as it does at the top, in a way that allows Gerry and Art to concentrate on lyrical interplay while the rhythms open up. Titles include "Utter Chaos", "Blueport", "What Is There To Say", "Festive Minor", and "As Catch Can". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono 6 eye pressing with deep groove. Cover has light staining on the bottom seam and opening.)

Junko OnishiLive XI – Junko Onishi Presents The Sextet – Second Album ... CD
Somethin Cool (Japan), 2020. New Copy ... $19.99
A great live album from the sextet of pianist Junko Onishi – one of the warmest, most dynamic groups she's had in awhile – and one who come across here with all these moody tones and colors that seem to really help shape the direction of Junko's own performance! The horns are great – a lineup that includes Miki Hirose on trumpet and flugelhorn, Akihiro Yoshimoto on tenor and soprano, and Yuzo Kataoka on trombone – players who sometimes have a way of blocking out their sound in nicely angular ways, which are emphasized by the piano – and who sometimes hit a freer flow when the drums and bass get going! The rest of the group features Yosuke Inoue on bass and Shinnosuke Takahshi on drums – and the set also features some work on guitar from Satoshi Yoshida and alto from David Negrete – on tracks that include "Peace In Chaos", "Unity 1", "Rain In March", "Water Reflections", "2 Laps Behind", and "Gate Crasher". An excellent set of some fairly out material – performed by Shorter with a group that includes Freddie Hubbard, Grachan Moncur, James Spaulding, Herbie Hancock, and a rare appearance by his brother Alan on flugelhorn! At times, the record builds into a sound that's freer and more challenging than on some of Shorter's other albums from the time – but it does so in more of the "new thing" mode that you'd hear on records from the time by Jackie McLean or Moncur, with an overall sense of purpose that really keeps the message clear. Features all original compositions by the Shorter brothers – and cuts include "Chaos", "Face Of The Deep", "Mephistopheles", and "Genesis". CD

Claude WilliamsonClaude Williamson Mulls The Mulligan Scene ... LP
Criterion, 1958. Very Good- ... $6.99
A really unique little session – for a number of reasons! Firstly, the set features pianist Claude Williamson playing versions of Gerry Mulligan compositions – nearly all of them tracks that Mulligan wrote specifically to be played by his piano-less groups of the early 50s – in a fluid style that has most of the rhythm coming from the horns. By bringing piano back into the mix, Williamson comes up with completely different takes on the tracks – really exploding them with rhythm on the keys, and bopping them up significantly from Mulligan's original readings. The second unusual feature of the set is that the album features Williamson working in piano duets in the lead – with himself! Through the early magic of overdubbing, Claude's playing twin piano parts for the set – making the piano approach to Mulligan even fuller and more key-complicated – supported by rhythm from the trio of Howard Roberts on guitar, Red Mitchell on bass, and Stan Levey on drums. Tracks include "Ontet", "Line For Lyons", "Walkin Shoes", "Westwood Walk", "A Ballad", and "Utter Chaos". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono blue label pressing with deep groove. Cover has a small split in the top seam, a small peeled spot and some price sticker remnants on front, and clear tape holding the bottom seam.)

✨✧ Cecil TaylorCecil Taylor Solo ... CD
Trio/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1973. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Tremendous work from Cecil Taylor – a Japanese album that captures the pianist at the peak of his power – when he was breaking through into this amazing new territory in improvised music, with energy and dexterity that's completely unlike anyone else! Taylor in the 60s was great, but Taylor in the 70s – especially here – is mindblowing – as he attacks the piano with this reach and sense of imagination that would have blown away any of the big cockrock guitar heroes of the decade – all with a style that might sound like chaos at first listen, but which has this incredible understanding of notes, sounds, and colors – all effortlessly cascading from Cecil's fingers throughout! The album was recorded live in Lino Hall, Tokyo, at 2 in the morning – and titles include "Lono", "Choral Of Voice (Elesion)", "First Layer", and "Asapk In Ame". CD

✨✧ Mal WaldronFree At Last (extended edition – with bonus tracks) ... LP
ECM (Germany), 1969. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The title's no mistake, as the album was really one of Mal Waldron's first really outside sessions – a real embrace of the free jazz modes coming out of the European scene of the 60s, but in a way that's slightly different than most! As Waldron states in the liner notes, his vision here is free, but not total chaos – an approach to music that's much more unfettered than before, yet still somewhat rhythmically structured – so that the tunes themselves roll out with a great deal of drive and energy, almost modal at points, but a bit fuller overall. The rhythm section here is a great part of the success of the album – with Clarence Becton on drums and the amazing Isla Eckinger on bass – a player whose pulsating approach is a perfect foil for Waldron's bold work on piano. There's actually a surprising amount of groove-driven numbers here – hardly the free jazz of the FMP scene, and more in the mode of some of the most unfettered expressions going down at MPS at the time. Titles include "Rat Now", "Balladina", "1 3 234", "Rock My Soul", and "Boo". Features a full bonus album – with alternate takes of "Balladina", "Boo", and "1 3 234" – and a long take of "Willow Weep For Me". LP, Vinyl record album
