Channel TwoArtful Time Reduction ... CD
Kajmere, 2006. Used ... $4.99
A nice set from the duo Channel Two – aka LA's Terence Yoshiaki and Hamburg's Andreas Bingel – melding bouncing soul beats, hip hop and an overall sultry approach! On top of impressively combining club soul, hip hop and nice instrumentals, Channel Two is unafraid of bringing a sunny hook – but never cross the line into dumb pop. A really impressive platter of tunes from a crew to keep an eye on! Guests include Tre of the Pharcyde, singer Terry Dexter, Apl of Black Eyed Peas and others. 13 tracks on the CD: "The Beat Is On" feat Black Shakespeare, Edee & Jantee, "One And Only" feat Slim Kid Tre & Brixx, "Bringa" feat Apl.De.Ap & Nfa, "Jazz Move", "Disney" feat Kim Hill, "Anytime" feat Patrice, "S'posed To Be" feat Joy Jones, "En Moi" feat William Hanford Lee Jr, "Soul At Ease" and more. Dakar/Solid (Japan), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
These guys are a great little vocal group from the glory days of Brunswick. They never cut a full LP, but this is an excellent little single that's got two great sides. "Sweetest Thing" is a nice loping groover – a bit like work by The Artistics, with a similar flair for a hook. "Someone Else's Arms" is a remake of the Barbara Acklin tune – done with deep male harmonies, which give the tune a great little flair! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Leaf (UK), 2016. New Copy 2CD ... Just Sold Out!
The amazing first full length set of Comet Is Coming – one of the boldest statements from the London jazz scene in recent years – and a brilliant blend of live jazz instrumentation and electronics! Shabaka Hutchings – as King Shabaka – is in the group on tenor, which he blows with this strongly spiritual quality – really reaching out as this organic core amidst some of the spacier, noisier touches – all of which never get too far-out, and which are just balanced enough to effect the cosmic journey that's always been the group's promise! Drums are nice and heavy too, and the whole thing has this fantastic vibe that's as immediately appealing as it is completely unique – which you'll hear on tunes that include "Space Carnival", "The Prophecy", "Channel The Spirits", "Deep Within The Engine Deck", and "Journey Through The Asteroid Belt". As a bonus, the 2CD edition also features their debut Prophecy EP – plus unheard tracks titled Ancient Tapes – "Slammin", "Transmission", and "Closing Credits". CD

Virgin, 1979. Used ... $14.99
Excellent side of the Diamonds' nice harmonies riding hard stepping rockers rhythms! The Diamonds were never shy about borrowing from the sounds that were hot in cities across the shores, like Detroit or Chicago, and they sound great over these driving cuts, which are served up in bonus dub versions! Fully Fullwood, Santa Davis, Chinna Smith and Gladdy Anderson deliver the goods with bubbling roots rock underneath, and Ernest Hoo Kim tastefully gives the rhythms a dub workout. Includes "Reality", "Blackman", "One Brother Short", "4000 Years", "Two By Two" and "Dreadlocks Time" and more – plus dub versions of each. 20 tracks in all! CD

El (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $3.99 13.99
Two very different slices of work from the Brit easy scene at the start of the 60s – TV music from arranger John Gregory, and a set of swinging vocal sides from the great Mike Sammes Singers! Gregory dominates the first record – which is split between an album of western themes, mostly from American sources – taken at a relatively serious level with added vocals from Sammes' group. The second half of the Gregory tracks are more swinging – and feature work from The Avengers and other 60s crime/spy material. Gregory titles include "The Avengers", "Sunset Strip", "Johnny Staccato", "Route 66", "Tightrope", "Sugarfoot", "Maverick", "Bonanza", "Rawhide", and "Perry Mason". The other part of the collecvtion features excellent material from the Mike Sammes Singers – a mixed male/female group who work in a very jazzy style – clearly schooled in the vocalese of Lambert Hendricks & Ross or The Blue Stars – but also working with more of a lyrical approach, and this sprightly feel that would have been perfect on 60s TV. The arrangements are great – jazzier than they are cheesy – and titles include "Taking A Chance On Love", "Pick Yourself Up", "Passing Breeze", "Spring Spring Spring", "Nice To Know You Care", "I Know That You Know", and "Manhattan". Package also fetaures more bonus tracks from the Sammes Singers! CD

Pressure Sounds (UK), 1970s. New Copy 2LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An incredible set of low rolling, hypnotic dub genius from true reggae Revolutionaries – a batch of amazing tunes centered around the amazing drums of Sly Dunbar – cut in the mid-to-late 70s height of the Channel One groove! This might be the strongest collection of dubs that Pressure Sounds has ever compiled – benchmark work all the way – from the chugging, echoey guitar groove, to the heavy bass lines, to the sublime vocals. Amazing stuff mined from singles on the Channel One, Well Charge and Disco Mix labels. The set starts out with the incredible "Kunta Kinte Version One" – one of the most legendary dub plates ever, and other titles include "Hotter Fire Version", "Rootes Dub", "Pride & Ambition Version", "Dunkirk", "War Version", "Jah Creation Version", "Rude On Marchus Version", "Swell Headed", "Catonine Version", "Tivoli Skank", "Plantation Heights Version" and more. Black DiamondMandala ... CD
Shifting Paradigm, 2017. New Copy ... $1.99 12.00
A jazz duo with a very striking name – but one that makes complete sense, when you realize the record comes from the growing genius of Artie Black and Hunter Diamond – two up-and-coming tenorists on the Chicago scene who've developed a really wonderful affinity for each other! Here, the record just features bass and drums alongside the two horns – Matt Ulery on the former, Neil Hemphill on the latter – and the recording style has each player in one channel – a way of further expanding the great style they have of riding together, commenting on each other, and answering their own calls to rise to even more greatness. The record has a keen understanding of the farther reaches, but always keeps things tuneful, inside, and rhythmic – on tracks that include "Rudy's Mood", "Jacunda", "Village Within The City", "Mandala", "Little Melody", "Clay Feet", and "Eleanor & Rufus". Bob Brookmeyer & Bill EvansIvory Hunters – Double Barrelled Piano ... CD
United Artists/Universal (Japan), 1959. Used ... $19.99
A compelling album of twin-piano lines – one in which Bill Evans and Bob Brookmeyer play head-to-head, in a spiraling modernist style that brings out the best in each player! Although Brookmeyer's best known as a trombonist, he's pretty great here on piano – and the album's a real treasure from his legendary late 50s years – a time when Bob was really opening up tremendously in his music! The album separates out the players via stereo – with Bill Evans in the right channel and Brookmeyer in the left – and the format usually has one player in a rhythm groove while the other solos over the top. The bass of Percy Heath and drums of Connie Kay complete the group – and titles include longish versions of "As Time Goes By", "I Got Rhythm", "The Man I Love", and "The Way You Look Tonight". CD

Larry CoryellEuropean Impressions ... LP
Novus, 1978. Very Good ... $5.99
Larry Coryell began his career as a fuzzy fusion monster – often leaning into rock with both his sound and his solos – but over the 70s, he also really developed his talents as an acoustic artist – which come into beautiful focus here on a set of mostly solo recordings! Larry almost seems to channel previous acoustic giants – like Baden Powell or Paco DeLucia – but all while making a sound that's completely his own – quite rhythmic in its pulse, with some very hard action on the strings – but also with a level of sensitivity that you never would have heard in his music a decade before! The album's got a fantastic blending of the Horace Silver tunes "Song For My Father" and "Sister Sadie" – and other tracks include "Toronto Under The Sign Of Capricorn", "April Seventh", "Copenhagen Impressions", and "For Phillip & Django". Miles DavisLive Evil (Quad mix) ... CD
Columbia (Japan), 1972. New Copy 2CDs ... $48.99
A beautiful live representation of the energy of the Bitches Brew years – one that has Miles Davis and the group really letting loose with free-flowing, modally-inspired lines – cooking up an incredible blend of acoustic and electric sounds at once! There's a bit of funk here, but not much – and although guitar is sometimes used strongly, it's often not as noisy as in later live sides. Instead, the whole group gels together beautifully – an unlikely assortment of players that includes Gary Bartz and Steve Grossman on reeds, John McLaughlin on guitar, Herbie Hancock on keyboards, Hermeto Pascoal on percussion, Dave Holland on bass, and Jack DeJohnette on drums – all given new focus, direction, and inspiration by Miles! Titles include "What I Say", "Sivad", "Selim", "Funky Tonk", and a great medley of "Gemini/Double Image". Hybrid SACD with DSD mastering – featuring both the 4-channel and 2-channel mixes of the album! CD
(A beautiful package – 2CDs in a heavy 7" style gatefold, with the artwork of the original album!)

The music is mostly mellow, with a stepping groove that works great for the harmonies of the pair – and there's a fair bit of roots numbers here, mixed with some warmer lovers' rock titles too. A slinky soulful groover from Susana Estrada – a Spanish singer, but one with a great ear for American club – as you'll hear on this classic set from the start of the 80s! Given her looks, and her legacy on screen, Susana's somewhat in the mode of the "porn star singing disco" that was big in the late 70s – but there's also a lot more going on here with the grooves, thanks to arranger/producer Josep Lobell, who is able to channel Nile Rodgers one minute, Leon Ware the next, and keep things moving through a range of Euro and New York disco styles. Fantastic early material from Gregory Isaacs – captured here early in his career, and working in a deep roots reggae mode – recording at Channel One with great direction from Ossie Hibbert! The set's laidback and righteous, in ways that let all the soulful qualities of Isaac's vocals still come through – but in a very different way than on his later hits! The rhythms are provided by the Revolutionaries – a perfect choice for the record – and titles include "Slave Master", "Story Book Children", "Get Ready", "Set The Captives Free", "Hand Cuff", "Storm", "Sacrifice", and "Smile". This great 2CD set features bonus material on CD1 – "The Sun Shines For Me", "Mr Know It All", "African Woman", "Thief A Man", "Love Light Burning", "My Conversation", and "Mr Brown". CD2 features the full album Leggo Dub – related dub material by the Ossie All-Stars – The Revolutionaries working with Ossie Hibbert on some wicked instrumentals that have plenty of core rhythms that never stray too far, while Hibbert makes magic with echo and other slight studio techniques! Titles include "Dubby Dubby", "Winners Dub", "Dub Down Babylon", "Ghetto Dub", "Brooklyn Style, "Leggo Dub", and "Doberman Skank". Asc, 2007. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A really inventive record from British avant piano legend Howard Riley – and that's saying a lot, as Riley is always pretty darn inventive! The set follows on a mode that Howard first begun during the 70s – and uses overdubbing to record him working on three different pianos as a trio – the first as if it was improvising solo, very freely; the second as a reaction to the movements of the first; and the third in the right channel as it responds to the overall picture in sound! The result is great – very rich, and very cohesive – and the album really stands every bit as strongly with some of the classics in Riley's catalog over the years. Thomas' vocals are in wonderful form for the set – stretching out soulfully on the extended classic "Hum-Allah-Hum-Allah-Hum-Allah" – a title that has much of the same grace and power as "The Creator Has A Master Plan. The rest of the players on the date include Lonnie Liston Smith on piano, Richard Davis and Cecil McBee on basses, and Idris Muhammad and Roy Haynes on drums – and unusually enough, each of the double bassists and drummers gets their own channel of sound to work with! The other long track on the album is the extended "Sun In Aquarius" – which is a bit more outside, but still pretty great! LP, Vinyl record album

Trojan/Music On Vinyl (UK), 1980. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
The mighty Sly Dunbar, working here on drums, in some very heady company – a wicked dub-heavy group that includes longtime partner Robbie Shakespear on bass – plus Gladdy Anderson on piano, Ansel Collins on organ, and Bingy Bunny and Bo Peep on guitars! The music is raw and stripped-down – produced by Jah Thomas at Channel One, mixed by Prince Jammy at King Tubby's – but with a rock-solid vibe that grabs you musically in a way that all of these many references hardly do justice! At a time when Sly was breaking big in the mainstream, working on lots of imported productions too, the groove is still very down to earth, and back to the amazing sound that he and his confreres first brought to the Kingston scene much earlier in the 70s. The set's got a really beautiful sound – one that comes from the ringing guitar tones of Garrison Fewell, and the twin reeds of John Tchicai and Charlie Kohlhase – each of whom plays in a different channel of the recording! This approach gives the record a great sense of space from the start – as Tchicai plays tenor and bass clarinet, and Kohlhase plays alto, tenor, and baritone – with Fewell's guitar bridging the space and creating a resonance that really holds the whole thing together. And if that's not enough, the album's got some sublime bass work from Cecil McBee – often very subtle and soulful – plus just the right touch of drums from Billy Hart. The set's proof that they do still make 'em like they used to – at least in terms of spiritual avant sessions – and titles include "The Queen Of Ra", "Tribal Ghost", "Dark Matter", and "Llanto Del Indio". Sure, Brunswick is known for its big groups from Chicago – who were some of the best of their time – but the label also recorded a lot of up-and-comers who were totally great too – but who never got to put together a full album for the label! Titles include "Chickens" by Complaments, "Purple Haze" by Johnny Jones & King Casuals, "Lonely Street" by The Admirations, "I'll Take You Just As You Come" by The Nialations, "Until You came Along" by The Visitors, "I Think I'll Cry Out Loud" by The Realistics, "The Sweetest Thing" by Channel 3, "Sing A Ling" by The Cooperettes, "Don't Fail Me Now" by The Symphonics, "A Strange Way" by The Loreleis, "Don't Take It Out On This World" by Adam's Apples, "Cowboys To Girls" by Jalynne Sound, "He's Got Your Number" by The Demures, and "Stay With Me Baby" by BW & The Next Edition. VariousBrunswick/Dakar Soul Stream Vol 1 – The Sweetest Thing ... CD
Brunswick/Ultra Vybe (Japan), Early 70s. New Copy ... $13.99
An incredibly rich collection of work from the legendary Brunswick and Dakar Records labels – and one of the first to really get at the labels' rich legacy of 7" singles that were never issued on any sort of full length albums! The Brunswick sound was a powerhouse in the late 60s and early 70s – a force that saw big records from The Chi-Lites, Jackie Wilson, Artistics, and others – yet the company also recorded a heck of a lot more music too – all of which was every bit as great as the hits, from the grooves at the bottom, to the tight arrangements in the middle, and the fantastic range of vocals on the top! This series finally gets at digging into all the many artists who never issued full albums on Brunswick or Dakar Records – and this first volume features 24 tracks that include "One Two Three Hamilton Street" by The Equations, "The Sweetest Thing" by Channel 3, "Stay With Me Baby" by BW & The Next Edition, "Where Our Love Has Gone" by Ronnie LaShannon, "Soul Strut" by Floyd Smith, "Let's TCB" by Richard Parker, "Contract On Your Love" by Chuck Bernard, "Funky Fatso" by The Aqua Sonics, "Dynamite" by John Freeman, "Forever & A Day" by Wales Wallace, "Turn Me Loose" by Donnie Vann, "You're My Sweet" by The Realistics, and "Falling In Love" by The Complaments. ✨✧ Aaly/DKV Double TrioDouble Or Nothing ... CD
Okka Disk, 2002. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Two important improvising trios come together head to head in the transatlantic brilliance of Okka Disk Records in the 90s – recorded in a very unusual way that lets you clearly hear all the contributions of the members of the group! In the left channel stands AALY – a searing lineup of Mats Gustafsson on alto and tenor, Ingebrigt Haker Flaten on bass, and Kjell Nordeson on drums – and in the right channel stands DKV, with Ken Vandermark on tenor and bass clarinet, Kent Kessler on bass, and Hamid Drake on drums – a mighty meeting of musicians who are really at the top of their improvising game! Rather than come on head-to-head, it's amazing to hear the way that these well-matched trios open up to each other – especially the bassists and drummers, who are maybe less familiar in this setting than Vandermark and Gustafsson, who were an instantly amazing musical pair. The set begins with the original "Left To Right", then the group makes real magic over the course of 51 minutes, in a piece that offers variations on Albert Ayler's "Angels" and Don Cherry's "Awake Nu". A later effort from the Kid – still flailing away with a steady, modern calypso pop back beat – and very smooth, ultra-laidback vocal approach! The production is very of of the era, but manages to break free of the over-muffled syncopated drum sound of the time. It's not one of Kid's finest albums, but it certainly has it's charms – with the lightly grooving bass, punching horns and vocals! 11 tracks in all: "Buttermilk Channel", "Part Of My Design", "Agony. . .Ecstasy", "Dancin' At The Baisn Douches", "Cold Wave", "So Far, So Good", "Boxed Out", "Call It A Day" and more. Barrington Levy in incredibly fine form in the mid 80s – the yearning soulfulness of his voice and peak level – and Junjo's production is great, too! There's this lean, buzzing and positively electric sound here that works so well, courtesy of longtime producer and collaborator Junjo Lawes and the Roots Radics players at Channel One. This isn't one of those cases where the 80s era production buffs things to to high of a gloss, things really fall into place here with a modern sound that doesn't even come close compromising the rootsy soul. 10 tracks in all: "Prison Oval Rock", "Prison Oval Dub", "You Say You Love Me", "Good Loving", "Rip And Run Off", "Please Jah Jah", "Robber Man", "Hammer", "Stray Away Girl" and "Mary Long Tongue". Masterful reggae instrumentals from the great Tommy McCook! Reggae In Jazz does indeed have some jazz-steeped solos augmenting the vibe quite nicely, but it's perhaps not the full on reggae/jazz hybrid the title suggests – which is a good thing, actually! The rhythms are strongly rooted in classic Dynamic and Channel One reggae instro territory, but the vibe is enhanced a bit by soul jazzy organ, guitar and more on the solo tip – and a bit of funk, too! Produced by Buster Riley, with Sly Dunbar, Santa Davos. Robbie Shakespeare, Chinna Smith, Ansel Collins, Jackie Mitoo and other legends on the session. Titles include "Grass Root", "Caution", "Sin", "Wild Bunch", "Bam-Bam", "Collin '1'", "Collin '2'", "Bad Man", "Good Bye". "Black-Out", "Rock Away" and "War". There's a fullness to the sound that's wonderful – top-to-bottom completely solid, and often highly focused on the rhythms, but also always using one key instrumental element on each cut – a bit of organ here, a weeping guitar there, or even an odd sonic element – always given center stage in the spotlight, and set apart from the rest of the mix in a really great way. ✨✧ Prince Far ITrojan Albums Collection (Free From Sin/Jamaican Heroes/Voice Of Thunder/Musical History) ... CD
Trojan/Doctor Bird (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Four fantastic albums from the legendary Prince Far I! The set begins with the classic Free From Sin – Great early work from Prince Far I – a stunning mix of reggae and dub, with a righteous quality that really gives the prince his title amongst 70s Jamaican royalty! Backing is by a version of the Roots Radics – with the excellent Style Scott on drums, Errol Holt on Bass, Bingy Bunny, Sowell and Chinna Smith on guitar, Bobby Kalphat and Snappin on keys, Bobby Ellis and Deadly Headly on horns, and Bongo Herman and Ras Millinek on percussion – but the real key to the sound is the way that Prince Far I produces the whole thing, and mixes his own sinister vocals with the heady, bottom-heavy rhythms – all with a quality that matches Lee Scratch Perry at his best! Titles include "Free From Sin", "Light Of Fire", "Reggae Music", "I & I Are the Chosen One", "Don't Deal With Folly", "Call On I In Trouble", "When Jah Ready You Got To Move", and "Siren". Jamaican Heroes is a totally great album by Prince Far I – and a set that already shows him building that crucial London/Kingston bridge that would be such a big part of his sound! The album features work from Sly & Robbie, and the killer drums of Style Scott on rhythm – but also includes contributions by London hipsters Viv Albertine & Ari Up (of the Slits), and David Toop (noted music writer and historian) – quite a mix, and all brought together wonderfully by the Prince's production, and really unique vocal approach. Titles include "Jamaican Heroes", "Prison Discipline", "Musical History", "Natty Champion", and "Golden Throne". Next up is a classic from Prince Far I – Voice Of Thunder couldn't be a more appropriate album title or moniker! Recorded at Channel One in 1981 with incredible analog dub production, it fully carries the grit, murk, heavy and heady soul of the 70s into the new decade –even if the sound is ultimately a bit different then the what he delivered in the 70s. That thunderous voice toasting over the rhythms is as incredible as ever – over the commanding bass of Professor Larry Silvera, tripped out drums & percussion by Jah Lloyd & Scully, occasional swirling keys by Steely, Tarzan and Tony Asher and the other great Channel One players. Titles include "Ten Commandments", "Every Time I Hear The Word", "Head Of The Buccaneer", "Shall Not Dwell In Wickedness", "Skinhead", and "Hold The Fort". Musical History is one of the last albums ever issued by Prince Far I – and a set that marks a fantastic cap to a too-short career! The Prince's vocal contributions are as impeccable as his dubby production work – and titles include "At The Cross", "More We Are Together", "Take Heed Frontline", "What You Gonna Do On Judgement Day", and "Tell Them About Jah Love". The record's filled with lots of cool electric elements – those weird production effects and electronic doodles that make the music of Scientist so revolutionary – especially when spun out over a still-familiar backdrop supplied by Roots Radics, with a core essence that's very much from the pre-digital world of Jamaican music. Rhythm tracks were done at Channel One, and Scientist mixed the set at King Tubbys – a host of dub mini-masterpieces that include "The Voodoo Curse", "Dance Of The Vampires", "Blood On His Lips", "Cry Of The Werewolf", "the Mummy's Shroud", "The Corpse Rises", "Night Of The Living Dead", "Your Teeth In My Neck", "Plague Of Zombies", and "Ghost Of Frankenstein". A pair of 70s dub classics – back to back on a single CD! First up is Negrea Love Dub – an early dub set from production genius Linval Thompson – a set that was initially released with a relatively obscure cover and package, and which may or may not include some of the Jamaican instrumental luminaries listed in the notes! What is clear, though, is that Linval Thompson is at the top of his game – partly offering up the tracks as a companion to his I Love Marijuana record, but also opening up into fresh rhythms and other material that helps forge a super-heavy sound that raises the dub reggae bar a few more notches for the 70s scene! Titles include "Rock Me In Dub", "Channel One In Dub", "Thompson In Dub", "Negrea Africa Dub", "Jah Jah Children Dub", "Lion Dub", "Natty Dread Dub", "Roots Dub", "Jamaica Calley Dub", and "Africa Love Dub". Outlaw Dub is a fantastic meeting of the production genius of Linval Thompson and the instrumental skills of The Revolutionaries – a set of Jamaican studio giants who play in a way that was laidback, yet still pack a hell of a punch! Sly and Robbie are at the core of the rhythms, which is a big element in the success of the set – and Thompson's production sets a sound that so many others would follow in years to come, but never really get as sharp or well-balanced as on this set. Formative sounds throughout – with titles that include "79 Rock", "Roots Man Dub", "Freedom Dub", "Thompson Sound Incorporated", and "African Free Up". CD

A tremendous 70s album from Charles Tyler – one recorded with a rich, raw tone that's simply mindblowing! Tyler here has all of the deep soul we first came to love during his ESP years, but also a sound that's a bit more focused too – one that's extremely powerful, and boldly righteous – not exactly spiritual jazz, but also not loft jazz either. The sound is wonderful – Tyler's sharp-edged alto out front, in a group with trumpeter Earl Cross – a player who's a really great match in spirit and tone. Other group members include Steve Reid on drums, and bassist Ronnie Boykins and John Ore – players who each play in a different channel of the record! The set is billed as "a polyphonic sonic drama performed live by the Charles Tyler Ensemble" – which is a wonderful summation of the music. CD

A rare moment from the hazy final days of the Black Ark – deeply dark grooves from Native, and a set that's got a surprisingly strong story too – as told in the detailed liner notes! Lee Scratch Perry works his mystical magic on the then largely unknown Wayne Jobson's Native – and the rhythms and songs here are every bit as solid as you'd hope for from a late 70s Black Ark album – with final touches that were laid on at Randy's, Harry J's, Channel One and Dynamic – even though the music lay unreleased for decades! At times Graham channels Eastern musical styles in his guitar – almost a Peter Walker sort of raga mode – other times, he has a way of transforming straighter tunes with a sense of mysticism – really doing a hell of a lot with just a few slight changes, and in ways that are light years beyond what so many American folkies were trying to do in 1966. Miller never copies the work of either artist, but instead really does a great job of channeling the soulful spirit of their generation through the new attitude of the Bay Area scene – often working with backing vocals alongside his lead, with a soul harmony approach that makes a few tunes straight soul swingers – while others have those funky blues currents that Steve always did so well. The great Ben Sidran produced – and gives the album the same criss-crossing of styles that his own early 70s albums showcased so well – and titles include "Fandango", "Love's Riddle", "Heal Your Heart", "Welcome", "Enter Maurice", "Somebody Somewhere Help Me", "The Sun Is Going Down", and "Journey From Eden". One of the most far-out, freaked-out albums ever from the Velvet Underground – easily the most experimental set the group ever recorded! The album's awash in really unusual sounds and styles – from the sonic blast of the title cut "White Light/White Heat", to the 17 minute garage/psych jam of "Sister Ray" to the very odd "The Gift" – which is a creepy story about cuckolding, told with voice and instrumentation split over different stereo channels! Other tunes offset the darkness with an eerie touch of sweet – and include "Here She Comes Now", "Lady Godiva's Operation", and "I Heard Her Call My Name". Arguably one of the Velvets' most influential moments – even if it's also one of their least commercially successful! LP, Vinyl record album

VariousYIA – Youth In Action Talent Contest Winners ... LP
YIA/Big Crown, 1968. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99
A totally cool little record – and one that was so rare, it was initially only pressed up to give to the singers and performers who worked on its grooves! The music here is all from a talent show in Brooklyn, circa 1968 – headed by the Youth In Action charity, and filled with very strong performances by soulful, youthful talents right from the streets! The whole thing's got a very raw feel – like the funkiest of the funky 45s from the time – and the recording is also live, with an audience that's getting pretty darn wild as the set moves on. Tracks mix great group soul performances with gritty funk and soul instrumentation – and tracks include "I Want To Be Sweeter To You" by The United Souls, "Love Makes A Woman" by Carla & The Carlettes, "I Wish It Would Rain" by Channels 4, "Come & Get These Memories" by Sharon Seabrook & The Starlettes, "Cowboys To Girls" by The Destinations, and "Thrillers Band" by The Thrillers Band. ✨✧ Davy GrahamMidnight Man ... LP
Decca/East Central One (UK), 1966. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic record from Davy Graham – an amazing guitarist, and a hell of a singer too – the sort of artist we'd rank right up there with Donovan, John Martyn, and maybe even Nick Drake! The whole thing is fantastic – a real discovery in music, and one that should have made Graham huge – with titles that include "The Fakir", "Watermelon Man", "No Preacher Blues", "Rags & Old Iron", "Money Honey", "Lost Lover Blues", "Neighbor Neighbor", and "Walkin The Dog". ✨✧ Siouxsie & The BansheesJuju ... LP
PVC, 1981. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastically dreamy little album from Siouxie & The Banshees – but one that also has a lot more edge than you might expect! These guys are really opening up in the post-punk years – still relatively stark, spare, and unadorned – but able to create all these shadows and channels in their sound – thanks not just to Siouxie's incredible vocals, which have really matured in just a few short years – but also to a complete reworking of fuzzier tones from the psych era, filtered more into a leaner punk-inspired sensibility. Titles include the classic "Arbaian Knights", plus "Voodoo Dolly", "Head Cut", "Sin In My Heart", "Night Shift", "Spellbound", "Into The Light", and "Halloween". LP, Vinyl record album
(US white label PVC pressing, including the printed inner sleeve. Cover has a cutout notch.)

✨✧ Sam WaymonGanja And Hess (colored vinyl pressing) (2018 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Strange Disc, 1973. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The incredible soundtrack for the black cinema classic Ganja & Hess – a film that's often cited in the history of blacksploitation films, but which is much deeper overall! In some ways, both the movie and soundtrack are like Sweet Sweetback's Baadass Song – created in the same moment, and accessing audiences through the same channels – but completely different and distinct! The music here is sometimes soulful, but often quite experimental – and features lots of echo, studio effects, and tape tricks – often layering the sound in striking ways that could make some of the tracks resonate more strongly with musique concrete than with blacksploitation funk. Other moments are moody and atmospheric – while others are pure gospel. This album is the first-ever release of the soundtrack – and titles include "Blood Of The Thing", "Bongili Work Song 1", "Hess Is Stabbed", "Survival/Drive", "The Seduction", "March Blues", and "Theme From Blood Couple". LP, Vinyl record album
(Limited edition of 1000 – on colored vinyl!)
