ChampsGo Champs Go ... LP
Challenge, 1958. Good ... $24.99
A shot of tequila and a whole lot more – one of the few albums issued by the legendary Champs, a group who helped reinvent the sound of instrumental rock at the start of the 60s! The group's classic "Tequila" is a very familiar mix of raunchy sax, strutting guitar, and some slightly south of the border rhythms – and the other tunes here follow suit beautifully – offering up some of the grittiest side of late 50s/early 60s instrumental rock you could hope to find. The album's a definitely all-killer, no-filler set – and in addition to "Tequila", titles also include "Go Champ Go", "I'll Be There", "Sky High", "Lollipop", "Night Beat", "Robot Walk", "Midnighter", and "Train To Nowhere". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original 2-color label pressing! Cover has a split bottom seam with wide clear tape, light wear on spine, light surface wear & aging.)

✨✧ Bob SinclarChamps Elysees (US pressing) ... CD
Subliminal, 2000. Used ... Out Of Stock
A guilty pleasure – but a great one! Bob Sinclar's one of the best new pop stars to emerge from the ever-growing French house scene – and this latest CD is a real winner with a glossy finish that takes us back to the days of classic club! Bob's got firm roots in the Chicago sound of the 80s, but the production on this excellent album is also more in keeping with New York of the late 70s – as lush orchestrations sneak in and out of funky dancefloor beats, washing through the whole album in a very classic mode that reminds us of the best moments of disco. Most of the tracks are highly instrumental – with vocals only coming in on a chorus, or on the few more soul-oriented tunes on the record. Great strings, great keyboards – and Bob's even got some vocal help from club legend James "D-Train" Williams. A pounding party all the way through, and a perfect record to put on when nobody's listening, and you can drop that hipster facade! Titles include "I Feel For You", "Freedom", "Save Our Soul", "Champs Elysees Theme", "Darlin", "Phasing News", "You Are Beautiful", "Striptease", and "Life". US pressing includes "My Only Love (exclusive subliminal mix)". CD

✨✧ Miles DavisAscenseur Pour L'Echafaud (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Fontana (France), 1958. New Copy (reissue)... $16.99 22.99
One of our favorite-ever Miles Davis albums – and a groundbreaking soundtrack that forever changed the way that jazz music was used in film! According to legend, the sounds here were recorded by Miles on a hot Paris night – late in the studio, after a live performance – in a very intimate setting that had he and the combo creating these little poetic passages along with the action in the film! In addition to sublime and moody muted trumpet from Miles – the small group also features tremendous tenor work from the great Barney Wilen – a French modernist who's at the height of his powers – and beautiful bass from Pierre Michelot, whose rich tones really frame the whole proceedings. The rest of the group features bop pianist Rene Urtreger and American drummer Kenny Clarke – but the real charm comes from the interplay between Wilen, Davis, and Michelo. Titles include "Florence Sur Les Champs-Elysees", "L'Assassinat De Carla", "Diner Au Motel", "Evasion De Julien", "Nuit Sur Les Champs-Elysees", "Le Petit Bal", "Au Bar Du Petit Bac" and "Sur L'Autoroute". ✨✧ Mal WaldronImpressions ... LP
New Jazz, 1959. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Incredible early work from Mal Waldron – a trio session, but one with a lot of dark edges! The group features Addison Farmer on bass and Al Heath on drums – and the tracks are played with lots of shades of blue – and a nicely restrained modern edge that still has plenty of the soul Waldron was bringing to Prestige blowing sides of the late 50s, mixed with a sense of modernism that shows him advancing into territory of Randy Weston and Herbie Nichols! The record's a pivotal chapter in Waldron's career – definitely full of the sorts of impressions promised in the title – and tunes include the incredible "Champs Elysees", plus "Ciao", "All About Us", and "C'est Formidable". ✨✧ Miles DavisAscenseur Pour L'Echafaud (expanded edition) ... CD
Fontana, 1958. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of our favorite-ever Miles Davis albums – even if it is a soundtrack that he recorded in France! The CD issue of this material features a whopping 20 minutes of extra material, for a total of 26 moody jazz tracks that were originally recorded for the French film Ascenseur Pour L'Echafaud (Elevator To The Gallows). Miles recorded this material during late-night post-gig sessions with a great group that includes French players Barney Wilen, Rene Urtreger, and Pierre Michelot, plus American ex-patriot Kenny Clarke. Wilen's playing is fantastic, and it's great to hear him and Miles together on the score's spooky meandering passages. Titles include "Nuit Sur Les Champs-Elysees", "Assassinat", "Le Petit Bal", and "Au Bar Du Petit Bac". Great stuff, and one of the best jazz soundtracks ever! CD

✨✧ Clark TerryClark Terry & His Orchestra Featuring Paul Gonsalves (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Decca/Sam Records (France), 1960. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A fantastic album from trumpeter Clark Terry – a small group date that features superb tenor from Paul Gonsalves, in a mode that's very similar to the work that both he and Terry recorded for Chess/Argo Records in the late 50s! This set's a French date, and features both horn players in a hip quintet with Raymond Fol on piano, Jimmy Woode on bass, and GT Hogan on drums – playing in a mode that's laidback, open, and which really has Terry showing off the most soulful side of his phrasing! Gonsalves is fantastic too – very different in a setting like this than in his larger group performances with Ellington – and the pair together are really at their best, with very expressive tones. Titles include "Blues For The Champ Of The Champs", "Clark Bars", "Lonely One", "Pannonica Ou Les Liaisons Dangereuses 1960 No 2", and "Serenade To A Bus Seat". LP, Vinyl record album
