✨✧ Spontaneous Music EnsembleChallenge 1966 to 1967 ... CD
Eyemark/Emanem (UK), 1966/1967. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Amazing free jazz from the British scene of the mid 60s – some of the earliest rumblings of genius from the Spontaneous Music Ensemble – already working here at a level that matches the avant energy happening both in the US and on the larger European scene! Core interplay here comes from Paul Rutherford on trombone, John Stevens on drums, and Trevor Watts on alto sax – three well-matched and familiar players who are able to improvise at a level that's quite mature, especially for the time – let loose, but never without a sense of direction – and given great help on most tracks by Kenny Wheeler on flugelhorn, plus a bit of bass from either Jeff Clyne or Bruce Cale. The whole thing's amazing – really bridging a modern world of Ornette Coleman and Joe Harriott with some of the later FMP-styled sounds that would come from the continent – and titles include "ED's Message", "2B Ornette", "Day Of Reckoning", "Travelling Together", "Club 66", and "After Listening". CD features the unissued "End To A Beginning" – plus the bonus 15 minute "Distant Little Soil", by a group that has Evan Parker on soprano sax and Chris Cambridge on bass, working with Watts and Stevens. Gary BartzEpisode One – Children Of Harlem ... CD
Challenge/Solid (Japan), 1994. New Copy ... $15.99
Masterful later work from saxophonist Gary Bartz – proof that he kept on growing and maturing his style after his initial explosive years in the 70s! This album is a bit more subtle than those righteous classics, but still carries a lot of message in the music – a suite of tracks composed by Gary Bartz and pianist Larry Willis – whose sharp-yet-round tones are a perfect accompaniment to Gary in the quartet alongside the bass of Buster Williams and the drums of Ben Riley! And yes, there's no vocals, nor funky bits – but the maturing power of Gary's message really comes through loud and clear – on titles that include "Children Of Harlem", "Tico Tico", "Amos & Andy Theme", "Heavy Blue", and "Tap Dancer". John BarryJohn Barry – The Mono Years 1957 to 1962 (3CD set) ... CD
El (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 3CD ... $19.99
The great John Barry as a young man – stepping out here on songs that are a lot more rocking than his later fame as a soundtrack composer – served up in a massive 3CD box that collects together singles for Parlophone and Columbia, plus some early rock songs from films! The style here is quite different than the Barry of the James Bond years – as the Parlophone tracks include a number of vocal singles that are clearly trying to challenge the US rock hits of the time, mixed with more instrumentals by the John Barry Seven – and the Columbia years follow with more of the instrumental vibe, often using cool production to bring the most out of the twangy guitars or bright trumpet lines. The set concludes with a CD that features the Beat Girl soundtrack and the Stringbeat instrumental album – both a strong extension of the Columbia years – and the package features 92 tracks in all – with a big booklet of notes – titles that include "Get Lost Jack frost", "Big Fella", "Beat For Beatniks", "Hit & Miss", "Zip Zip", "Little John", "Hideaway", "Farrago", "Big Guitar", "Tit Willow Twist", "Watch Your Step", "The Menace", "Blondie's Strip", "The Challenge", "Moody River", "A Handful Of Songs", "Zapata", and lots lots more. Beginning Of The EndNassau Funk ... CD
Alston/Playback, Early 70s. Used ... $9.99
Fantastic funk from Beginning Of The End – one of the coolest, grooviest, most unique funk groups of the 70s – and one who've got a real criss-crossing of styles in their sound! As you'd guess from the title, these guys hail from Nassau, in the Bahamas – but their sound is hardly the stale calypso of the earlier generation, or some of the more familiar island hybrids that were playing for the tourists. Instead, these guys completely reinvent funk from the ground up – adding in lots of their own special styles of rhythm and inflection, with elements that were learned from their home scene, but then refitted for a mode that's much more American funk overall – making these guys one of the few island acts to challenge the likes of Fatback or Kool & The Gang! The set's an extremely well-chosen batch of tracks from the group's few recordings – and titles include the classic "Funky Nassau (parts 1 & 2)", plus "Monkey Tamarind", "Super Woman", "Doin The Funky Do", "That's What I Get", "When Se Made Me Promise", "In The Deep Bahamian Boogie", "Fishman", "Pretty Girl", "I've Got The News", "Bluestrain", "Jump In The Water", "Gee Whiz It's Christmas", "Sleep On Dream On", "Trip To Nowhere", and "Come Down Baby". Ray ColumbusNow You Shake – The Definitive Beat, R&B, Pop, & Psych Recordings 1963 to 1969 ... CD
RPM (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy ... $6.99 13.99
A great collection of work from Ray Columbus – a New Zealand rocker of mid 60s vintage, but one who works here with mod sounds to rival much bigger names in London at the time! The collection begins with a core set of work by Ray Columbus & The Invaders – a super-sharp combo who have this sense of energy and fire that's a bit like Paul Revere & The Raiders, but more tuned towards beat group sounds – boundless energy that makes the rest of the combo a perfect fit for Ray's spirited lead vocals. The set then moves into solo material that Columbus recorded on his own, and with groups The Challenge, The Art Collection, and Fire – all with stylistic shifts that follow some of the British forays into trippier sounds after the initial beat boom – or some more compelling, more sophisticated material that Columbus really carries off well as a solo act. Titles include "She's A Mod", "I'm Finding Out", "She's Back Again", "Till We Kissed", "We Want A Beat", "In Memory Of Today", "Happy In A Sad Kind Of Way", "Los Angeles", "I'm Good For You", "Polka Dot Resistance", "Kick Me", and "East Pinkerton Street". Sonafric/Nubiphone (France), Early 70s. New Copy ... $24.99
One of the funkiest groups we've ever heard from the Cameroon scene – a combo who play with a super-tight sound that often has as much interplay between the vocals as the instruments at the core! As you'd guess from the three guitarists on top of the van in the cover, the group's sound is heavy on guitars – often riffing in these funky ways as the players seem to challenge each other, and create this great flow that moves between American funk and more homegrown styles. Vocals come fast and furious, and often shift between group members – really keeping pace with the energy of all the other instruments too. Titles include "Boo A Nun Muna", "Special Nkumu Asenge", "Kodi", "Pitie", "Kundug Bidza Bidza", "Annie", "Bia Tak Ayi Los", and "Esele Mulema Moam". LP, Vinyl record album

Richard MarksLove Is Gone – The Lost Sessions 1969 to 1977 ... CD
Now Again, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2CDs ... $15.99 19.99
Never-issued work from underground Atlanta soul genius Richard Marks – an artist who never got much exposure back in the day, but who kept on producing and recording funky soul nuggets on his own! Marks' later years were covered in a previous set by the Now Again label – and this time around, they dig even deeper into his past – with a whole host of tracks that could have been the stuff of rare funky 45 dreams – had they ever gotten released as 7" singles! Marks clearly has a strong influence from James Brown and his band – and the main instrumentation on most of the combo cuts is guitar, which is used to really whomp down on the rhythms, and enforce the groove in the way that James might have done! There's also some cuts that show Richard hitting some more mellow 70s styles too – almost echoes of Bill Withers, especially when he uses acoustic guitar instead of electric – and there's a few occasional deep soul moments too. Titles include "Never Satisfied", "Crackerjack", "Challenge To A Pretty Woman", "Your Friends", "Trying To Survive", "I'm The Man For You", "It's Been Kinda Hard", "Love Is Gone", "Speak Now", "Simple Carefree Life", and "China Doll (extended)". 2CD set features 36 tracks in all – lots of bonus material! SBBFOS (180 gram pressing) ... LP
GAD (Poland), 1975. New Copy ... $24.99
Soaring sounds from SBB – an all-instrumental session for Polish Radio, and one that really shows off the more fusion-heavy side of their music! All tracks are nice and long – and there's more of a power trio formation in the group – really freewheeling guitar lines that are certainly inspired by the roots of hard rock, but which get much more open, solo-based expression here – anext to some super-heavy bass and drums! There's a bit of keyboards, too – although used in ways that echo the guitar more than usual for the group – maybe prefacing the way that Geddy Lee's keys might challenge the guitar of Alex Lifeson in years to come. All tracks are nice and long – and titles include "Penia", "Dyskoteka", "Fos", and "Xeni". LP, Vinyl record album

Inevitable/Cherry Red (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 3CD ... $19.99
A great little package that finally gives the Liverpool scene its due – especially during a time when many other English cities are credited with helping to shape the sound of modern music! Late 70s Liverpool had little going on since the Beatles and Brit Invasion groups – but the rise of Inevitable Records gave the city a great voice to challenge the other punk and post-punk material of the time – and stood as an important stepping stone for a number of acts who went on to much bigger labels during the 80s! This package brings together all the a- and b-sides of Inevitable, along with replicas of all their cool 45rpm sleeves – important, as the label mostly just issued 7" singles – but with a force that has become legendary over the years. The package features 2CDs that bring together these singles, by groups who include Wah Heat, Dead Or Alive, Modern Eon, Nightmares On Wax, China Crisis, It's Immaterial, Faction, Freeze Frame, The Light, Builders, Box Of Toys, and Venus Adore – plus a full extra CD of Peel Session material from the early 80s by some of the biggest groups in the set! ✨✧ VariousReal Sound Of Chicago – Underground Disco From The Windy City ... LP
BBE (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The kind of record that makes us mighty proud to live in the Windy City – and a long-overdue look at the wealth of rare club, disco, and soul cuts bubbling in the Chicago underground at the end of the 70s! During the early part of the decade, the city was widely known for some super-huge soul acts – and in the 80s, house would raise Chicago to international fame – but in the space between, the city kept on putting out some really wonderful music – wicked little cuts issued on small indie labels, most of which never got any circulation outside the midwest! The Mr Peabody crate-digging team's collected together the best of the best from these overlooked years – and also threw in a few of their own edits too – furthering the dancefloor potential of some of the best rare nuggets. 2LP version features 8 cuts – including "Never Gonna Fall In Love Again" by Carmen Amez – plus seven Mr Peabody edits – versions of "Too Far Gone" by LaJohn & Sheela, "The Challenge" by Billy Hinton, "The Composer" by Fantasie, "Running To A Disco" by Lonnie Givens, "Bass Come Back" by The Moore Brothers, "Disco Ball" by Brighter Side Of Darkness, and "Your Love Is In The Pocket" by Premonition. ✨✧ Tim MaiaTim Maia (1977) ... LP
Mr Bongo (UK), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
70s soul from Brazil – and a tremendously strong effort from the legendary Tim Maia! This record was Tim's first after an initial run on Polydor – and it shows Maia tightening up his groove even more, but still avoiding the slicker sounds of later years. There's a really focused sound here that's totally great – one that shows that Maia's work was hardly just some happy cross-cultural accident, and instead the careful work of an artist who was out to challenge the best American soul acts of the time! There's a warm little groove to most of the tracks – tripping along lightly in the vein of some of our favorite US mellow soul from the mid 70s – an approach that's mostly soul, but with some funky undercurrents – and often smooth, but never cloying or overly commercial. Really compelling work from the farther reaches of the UK jazz scene – a series of "agile experiments" from drummer Dave DeRose – who works here with other musicians from the scene in a series of unbridled improvisations! The work was created with two guiding principles – the musicians could not discuss or plan their performance together in advance, and they would also play for a full hour, with no breaks at all! The idea grew out of a series of live performances, but then was captured by Dave in the studio – with results that are as varied as the musicians involved. Some selections are very unusual and almost abstract, others have a more familiar free jazz mode – and the ability of DeRose to shift in these spaces is one of the highlights of the set. The first volume includes performances with John Edwards on bass and Dan Nicholls on electronics; Rory Simmons on trumpet and electronics and George Crowley on saxes and effects; Dan Nicholls on electronics and Karl Vanden Bossche on percussion; Tom Challenger on saxes and Colin Somervell on bass; Sam Crowe on Rhodes and effects and Level Nevill Malcolm on bass; and Dario Rossetti Bonell on guitar and effects. A nice little record from Jon Regen – a singer who works in a space that's somewhere in between jazz and more familiar singer/songwriter modes – in a legacy that might begin with Ben Sidran in the 70s, and come up to present work by an artist like Jamie Cullum! Regen's got a nicely warm sound in his approach – but not one that's too smooth or commercial – as most of these songs are very understated, and done with a mix of lead piano instrumentation and other touches around the edges – sometimes maybe a bit of stepped-up rhythm, but never in a way that challenges the vocals. These ramrods are plenty rocking – a great gritty band from the Boston scene of the 60s – and one that's completely on fire with a mix of garagey numbers, and a few surprisingly dark little tunes! The music often has the guitars folded right into the rhythms, and some numbers have organ lines that beat most of their challengers – a list that would include The Mysterians all the way up to The Lyres – and it's clear that the Boston legacy was in very great hands during the short span this group issued rare singles for labels that include Plymouth, Bon Bon, Explosive, and Claridge – all of which are included in this great collection. TwilightStill Loving You ... LP
Luv N' Haight, 1981. New Copy (reissue)... $12.99 20.98
A lost bit of Cali soul from the 80s – the first album from Twilight, not really a group, but more of a solo studio project from Lawrence Ross! Ross was a shift worker at General Mills, but had some free time to conceive his dream soul album during the twilight hours of the day – hence the name of the "group" –and after slaving away on his off hours to put the whole thing together, he recorded most of this set within the space of a week playing most of the instruments himself! A few other guest artists came in to round out the sound, but there's definitely a personal quality to the record that belies Ross' close association with the whole thing – carefully written tunes that could have challenged the mainstream, had they gotten bigger production, but which have a great deal of charm since they're done here in a more stripped-down, indie-styled way. Twilight has all the best aspects of soul acts of the time – some tight groovers that mix up boogie rhythms with some warmer Cali soul – and a few mellower cuts that benefit from some cool spacey keyboards. Titles include "Play My Game", "Scorpittiarus", "We'll Be Special", "Love's High", "You Know It's Me", "Love's The Way", "Straight To My Heart", and "Just A Kiss Away". LP, Vinyl record album

KPM/Vocalion (UK), 1970s. New Copy ... $18.99
A treasure trove of Brit sound library work – most of it from the legendary KPM 1000 Series, plus assorted bits from the Conroy label as well! The work here leans heavily towards funky jazz – those fuzzy, hard-driving tunes that always made KPM sides a key choice for action films and cop shows – and which have made digging through sound library records such a delight all these many decades later! The compilers did a really wonderful job with this set – creating a feel that's a bit different than the usual sound library collection – because although funky overall, the package also features some jazzy moments too – key cuts that are interspersed with the action moments to create a really fleshed-out sense of mood and feeling. Plus, the set list is huge – 25 tracks in all, running for well over 70 minutes – truly the treasure trove we promised at the start of this review, with titles that include "Soul For Sale" and "Tycoon" by Keith Mansfield, "Block Buster" and "Head In The Clouds" by Johnny Pearson, "Loco Motion" and "Soul Foot Strut" by Dave Gold, "Traffic" and "Challenger" by Alan Hawkshaw, "Short Cut" by James Clarke, "Heavy Traffic" by James Cameron, "Speculation" by David Lindup, "Vegas To LA" by Dick Doerschuk, "Tough Assignment" by Chris Gunning, "Speedway" by Nick Ingman, "String Boogie" by Brian Bennett, and "The Double Take" by Steve Gray. Stax/Light In The Attic, Mid 60s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Massive soul from Wendy Rene – one of the lesser-known talents from the Stax Records scene of the 60s, and an artist who's finally getting her due! We're not sure why Wendy never hit bigger at the time – because her singles here are wonderful – excellent female soul that not only ranks with the best of the Stax sound of the time, but which also challenges the bite of some of the best Motown music too – thanks to a particularly northern groove on some of the best cuts here! In fact, it may well be this style – often closer to Detroit soul than the usual Memphis bag at Stax – that might have held Wendy back. But that's hardly an issue all these many years later – and our hat's off to the folks at Light In The Attic for not only bringing together her rare singles, but also collecting unreleased songs, other rarities, and even material performed with the group The Drapels – all recorded in the years 1964 and 1965, and supported by some great notes too. Titles include "Bar B Q", "I Wish I Were That Girl", "What Will Tomorrow Bring", "Last Love", "Crowded Park", "Give You What I Got", "Deep In My Heart", "Wondering", "First Kiss", "Reap What You Sow", "After Laughter Comes Tears", and "He Hasn't Failed Me Yet". ✨✧ John CorbettListener's Guide To Free Improvisation ... Book
University Of Chicago, 2016. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A much-needed book for the open-minded listener – a well-written volume from jazz critic John Corbett – and one that's bound to widen your ears to a whole new realm of listening! The book's pocket-sized – maybe so that you can sneak it into a club when visiting a free jazz concert – and it's written in a style that's both personal, but very directive – with a full understanding of the complexities that come into play when listening to improvised music, and a guide towards facing some of the more difficult challenges involved! Corbett clearly loves this music, but without any sort of high ideals – none of the too-cool-for-school modes that are usually standard with the avant garde, and instead this very down to earth approach that shows the listener that they've got all the tools needed to enjoy the music themselves. The goal here (one we can totally endorse) is to bring the listener face to face with new and challenging sounds – but in a way that allows them to instantly contextualize them too – yet without having to carry years of jazz or musical experience into the process. The book is divided up into easy-to-digest sections – and penned with a surprisingly warm style too. Book

✨✧ Frank R HaydeStan Levey – Jazz Heavyweight – The Authorized Biography (hardcover) ... Book
Santa Monica Press, 2016. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Drummer Stan Levey shone most brightly during his west coast work of the 50s – where he was a key figure in both large and small group jazz performances – but he also had a much longer history, which included plenty of time away from the limelight – a rich story that's captured in great detail here by the author! As with some of the better jazz books of the period, Levey's story is one that deals not just with musical creation, but also ongoing employment – and some of the challenges that can face a musician with the integrity of Stan. The book also looks at his earliest years – both as a prize fighter, and a bebopper on the east coast – where Levey got his start before moving to greater fame in California. The book is 224 pages, hardcover, with some black and white images – and also includes a great "recommended listening" section at the end! Book

✨✧ StereolabTransient Random Noise Bursts With Announcements (3LP pressing – with bonus tracks) ... LP
Elektra/Duophonic, 1993. New Copy 3LP (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The title's a mouthful, but it's also a key calling card for the legendary Stereolab – a group who effortlessly compressed the space between the 60s and 90s with this major label debut – and set a course for mainstream music well into the 21st Century! After the space of many years, the set still blows us away – and really lasts a lot longer than most of the supposed classics by their contemporaries – proof that the group were always using the past to see far far into the future! And although they got their start in the indie world, they really used the platform of Elektra to refine and focus their message – instead of being swallowed in the maw of Warner Brothers, Stereolab take up the challenges of greater professionalism – and hone their skills to an impeccable edge, crafting beautiful little tunes that are every bit as compelling as the promise of the album's title makes them out to be! Titles include "Tone Burst", "Golden Ball", "Pack Yr Romantic Mind", "Paus", "Jenny Ondioline", and "Analogue Rock". Fantastic version – with new remastering, and a full bonus disc of demos and alternates! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Jon RegenHigher Ground ... CD
Ropeadope, 2019. Used ... Out Of Stock
Titles include "Hole In My Heart", "Every Night", "Goodnight New York", "New Sensation", "Who Cares If Everybody Else Knows", "Jupiter Calling", and "Higher Ground". CD
