John BarryJohn Barry – The Mono Years 1957 to 1962 (3CD set) ... CD
El (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 3CD ... $19.99
The great John Barry as a young man – stepping out here on songs that are a lot more rocking than his later fame as a soundtrack composer – served up in a massive 3CD box that collects together singles for Parlophone and Columbia, plus some early rock songs from films! The style here is quite different than the Barry of the James Bond years – as the Parlophone tracks include a number of vocal singles that are clearly trying to challenge the US rock hits of the time, mixed with more instrumentals by the John Barry Seven – and the Columbia years follow with more of the instrumental vibe, often using cool production to bring the most out of the twangy guitars or bright trumpet lines. The set concludes with a CD that features the Beat Girl soundtrack and the Stringbeat instrumental album – both a strong extension of the Columbia years – and the package features 92 tracks in all – with a big booklet of notes – titles that include "Get Lost Jack frost", "Big Fella", "Beat For Beatniks", "Hit & Miss", "Zip Zip", "Little John", "Hideaway", "Farrago", "Big Guitar", "Tit Willow Twist", "Watch Your Step", "The Menace", "Blondie's Strip", "The Challenge", "Moody River", "A Handful Of Songs", "Zapata", and lots lots more. It's hard to challenge the genius of The Coasters at this point in their career – as the vocal group moves with razor-sharp changes and boundless wit – all set to hip production from the team of Lieber & Stoller! There's some wonderful lesser-known gems by the group here – including "Girls Girls Girls", one of our all-time favorites – plus "The Snake & The Bookworm", "Wait A Minute", "Bad Blood", "Let's Go Get Stoned", and "Hongry". Ray ColumbusNow You Shake – The Definitive Beat, R&B, Pop, & Psych Recordings 1963 to 1969 ... CD
RPM (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy ... $6.99 13.99
A great collection of work from Ray Columbus – a New Zealand rocker of mid 60s vintage, but one who works here with mod sounds to rival much bigger names in London at the time! The collection begins with a core set of work by Ray Columbus & The Invaders – a super-sharp combo who have this sense of energy and fire that's a bit like Paul Revere & The Raiders, but more tuned towards beat group sounds – boundless energy that makes the rest of the combo a perfect fit for Ray's spirited lead vocals. The set then moves into solo material that Columbus recorded on his own, and with groups The Challenge, The Art Collection, and Fire – all with stylistic shifts that follow some of the British forays into trippier sounds after the initial beat boom – or some more compelling, more sophisticated material that Columbus really carries off well as a solo act. Titles include "She's A Mod", "I'm Finding Out", "She's Back Again", "Till We Kissed", "We Want A Beat", "In Memory Of Today", "Happy In A Sad Kind Of Way", "Los Angeles", "I'm Good For You", "Polka Dot Resistance", "Kick Me", and "East Pinkerton Street". Bo Diddley/Muddy Waters/Little WalterSuper Blues ... LP
Chess, 1967. Very Good ... $29.99
A Chicago blues trifecta – and the first time ever that Muddy Waters, Bo Diddley, and Little Waters ever worked together! The set's got a raw power that definitely lives up to the title – a wicked mix of raw guitars, rough rhythms, and some wonderfully soulful vocals – all served up in a style that has the modes of each different player stepping forth into the limelight from track to track, but with the others shouldering forth themselves to challenge the lead! The mix of Bo's twang and Muddy's grit is mighty nice – and Little Walter helps bring a soulful focus that really holds the whole thing together. Titles include "I'm A Man", "Who Do You Love", "Bo Diddley", "I Just Want To Make Love To You", "My Baby", "Long Distance Call", and "You Don't Love Me". LP, Vinyl record album

Bill DixonCollection ... LP
Cadence, 1985. Near Mint- 2LP Box Set ... $129.99
Amazing sounds from the legendary Bill Dixon – 2 LPs worth of solo trumpet performances, all recorded at Bennington College in the early 70s! Dixon's a player we've always found to be richly creative – but here, working without any other instrumentation at all, he really blows our mind – stretching out in different sonic textures and tones that seem to encompass a whole range of avant trumpet expression – almost a bold challenge to contemporaries like Leo Smith, Manfred Schoof, Harry Beckett, and others – but a private one, too – given that these original recordings were never designed for public consumption. There's some great echo used at points, which Dixon really plays with by creating some noise with his tone – and titles include "I See Your Fancy Footwork", "When Winter Comes", "Webern Work/Study", "Tracings", "Summerdance For Judith Dunn", "Masques 1", and "Swirls". ✨✧ Flaming LipsEmbryonic (2CD & DVD) ... CD
Warner, 2009. Used 2CD & DVD ... $16.99
A late masterpiece from the Flaming Lips – one of their most unique and uncompromising records since they became leftfield hitmakers – and a record that works best as a whole! Embryonic is a grower, and the first record since The Soft Bulletin which, to our ears anyway, doesn't seem to have any illusions of a crossover ready single in the lineup. It's really a space rock record with fuzzy guitars and echoing noisiness, and a confident step out of "Do You Realize?" style speaks-to-everyone art pop, and into more of a dissonant, messy sound. It's a real thrill for us to see a longtime favorite not only get over into the mainstream consciousness and stay there for years, but to continue to challenge and innovate while they're hanging out there. Titles include "Convinced Of The Hex", "The Sparrow Looks Up At The Machine", "Evil", "Aquarius Sabotage", "See The Leaves", "Your Bats", "Powerless", "Scorpio Sword", "Watching The Planets" and more. Dick & Kiz HarpAt The 90th Floor ... LP
90th Floor, 1960. Very Good ... $9.99
A rare vocal session from the duo of Kiz and Dick Harp – a pair who's kind of like a stripped-down version of Jackie & Roy! As on the best Jackie & Roy work of the time, the record features vocals by both Kiz and Dick – sometimes singing solo, sometimes in duet mode – but the sound here is a lot sparer, with just piano backing the voice on most numbers, in a way that's intimate and very much in a late nite and loungey mode. The setting is an unusual one for the time, but Kiz especially rises to the challenge – and really dominates the record with her expressive, yet understated vocals. Titles include "Ugly Duckling", "Lazy Afternoon", "I Like It That Way", "Down In The Depths", "Inch Worm", "Joey Joey Joey", and "Too Much In Love". LP, Vinyl record album

Sonafric/Nubiphone (France), Early 70s. New Copy ... $24.99
One of the funkiest groups we've ever heard from the Cameroon scene – a combo who play with a super-tight sound that often has as much interplay between the vocals as the instruments at the core! As you'd guess from the three guitarists on top of the van in the cover, the group's sound is heavy on guitars – often riffing in these funky ways as the players seem to challenge each other, and create this great flow that moves between American funk and more homegrown styles. Vocals come fast and furious, and often shift between group members – really keeping pace with the energy of all the other instruments too. Titles include "Boo A Nun Muna", "Special Nkumu Asenge", "Kodi", "Pitie", "Kundug Bidza Bidza", "Annie", "Bia Tak Ayi Los", and "Esele Mulema Moam". LP, Vinyl record album

Tim MaiaTim Maia (1977) ... LP
Mr Bongo (UK), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $20.99 24.98
70s soul from Brazil – and a tremendously strong effort from the legendary Tim Maia! This record was Tim's first after an initial run on Polydor – and it shows Maia tightening up his groove even more, but still avoiding the slicker sounds of later years. There's a really focused sound here that's totally great – one that shows that Maia's work was hardly just some happy cross-cultural accident, and instead the careful work of an artist who was out to challenge the best American soul acts of the time! There's a warm little groove to most of the tracks – tripping along lightly in the vein of some of our favorite US mellow soul from the mid 70s – an approach that's mostly soul, but with some funky undercurrents – and often smooth, but never cloying or overly commercial. Titles include "Ride Twist & Roll", "Flores Belas", "Let It All Hang Out", "Sem Voce", "E Necessario", "Leva O Meu Blue", "Pense Menos", and "Musica Para Betinha". LP, Vinyl record album

Monday Michiru in a beautifully stripped-down setting – working here with just the guitar of Adam Rogers alongside her wonderful vocals – on a record that shows just how much she's grown over the years! The format is spare, but that also seems to unlock even more jazz expression in Monday's approach – almost like a horn player working in a spare duet setting, having to do more than in a bigger group, but really growing to the challenge in the process! Titles include "Rainbows", "Native Tongue", "Crave", "No Matter What", "Slo", "Chasing After The Sun", and "No Matter What". CD

Soaring sounds from SBB – an all-instrumental session for Polish Radio, and one that really shows off the more fusion-heavy side of their music! All tracks are nice and long – and there's more of a power trio formation in the group – really freewheeling guitar lines that are certainly inspired by the roots of hard rock, but which get much more open, solo-based expression here – anext to some super-heavy bass and drums! There's a bit of keyboards, too – although used in ways that echo the guitar more than usual for the group – maybe prefacing the way that Geddy Lee's keys might challenge the guitar of Alex Lifeson in years to come. Nothing sleepy here, as the Siegel Schwall Band are very much in the lean, bluesy territory that made them such a standout act on the Chicago scene of the 70s! These guys have a real Old Town blend of folk roots and blues inspirations – never trying to force things with either too much bravado in their performance, nor any assumptions that they're going to challenge their legends – instead just working with lots of great original material of their own, in a nicely rootsy vibe – with the mighty Corky Siegel on lead vocals, piano, and harmonica. Inevitable/Cherry Red (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 3CD ... $19.99
A great little package that finally gives the Liverpool scene its due – especially during a time when many other English cities are credited with helping to shape the sound of modern music! Late 70s Liverpool had little going on since the Beatles and Brit Invasion groups – but the rise of Inevitable Records gave the city a great voice to challenge the other punk and post-punk material of the time – and stood as an important stepping stone for a number of acts who went on to much bigger labels during the 80s! This package brings together all the a- and b-sides of Inevitable, along with replicas of all their cool 45rpm sleeves – important, as the label mostly just issued 7" singles – but with a force that has become legendary over the years. The package features 2CDs that bring together these singles, by groups who include Wah Heat, Dead Or Alive, Modern Eon, Nightmares On Wax, China Crisis, It's Immaterial, Faction, Freeze Frame, The Light, Builders, Box Of Toys, and Venus Adore – plus a full extra CD of Peel Session material from the early 80s by some of the biggest groups in the set! The kind of record that makes us mighty proud to live in the Windy City – and a long-overdue look at the wealth of rare club, disco, and soul cuts bubbling in the Chicago underground at the end of the 70s! During the early part of the decade, the city was widely known for some super-huge soul acts – and in the 80s, house would raise Chicago to international fame – but in the space between, the city kept on putting out some really wonderful music – wicked little cuts issued on small indie labels, most of which never got any circulation outside the midwest! The Mr Peabody crate-digging team's collected together the best of the best from these overlooked years – and also threw in a few of their own edits too – furthering the dancefloor potential of some of the best rare nuggets. 2LP version features 8 cuts – including "Never Gonna Fall In Love Again" by Carmen Amez – plus seven Mr Peabody edits – versions of "Too Far Gone" by LaJohn & Sheela, "The Challenge" by Billy Hinton, "The Composer" by Fantasie, "Running To A Disco" by Lonnie Givens, "Bass Come Back" by The Moore Brothers, "Disco Ball" by Brighter Side Of Darkness, and "Your Love Is In The Pocket" by Premonition. Alston/Playback, Early 70s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Fantastic funk from Beginning Of The End – one of the coolest, grooviest, most unique funk groups of the 70s – and one who've got a real criss-crossing of styles in their sound! As you'd guess from the title, these guys hail from Nassau, in the Bahamas – but their sound is hardly the stale calypso of the earlier generation, or some of the more familiar island hybrids that were playing for the tourists. Instead, these guys completely reinvent funk from the ground up – adding in lots of their own special styles of rhythm and inflection, with elements that were learned from their home scene, but then refitted for a mode that's much more American funk overall – making these guys one of the few island acts to challenge the likes of Fatback or Kool & The Gang! The set's an extremely well-chosen batch of tracks from the group's few recordings – and titles include the classic "Funky Nassau (parts 1 & 2)", plus "Monkey Tamarind", "Super Woman", "Doin The Funky Do", "That's What I Get", "When Se Made Me Promise", "In The Deep Bahamian Boogie", "Fishman", "Pretty Girl", "I've Got The News", "Bluestrain", "Jump In The Water", "Gee Whiz It's Christmas", "Sleep On Dream On", "Trip To Nowhere", and "Come Down Baby". An insane collection of work from the mighty Wynn Stewart – a figure that most people know from just a handful of recordings in the late 50s, but who continued to cut some really fantastic music as the years moved on! Wynn was an early legend on the West Coast – very important to the rise of the Bakersfield sound in the 50s – and although his best-known tracks were recorded for the rock/pop label Challenge, this box finally brings to light all of Stewart's great 60s sides for Capitol, plus some sides for that label that predate the Challenge work – and more music for RCA, Copre, Jewel, Playboy, Win, and other labels – including a completely unissued album, and an unissued session cut with Rusty York in 1969. The box has a massive 279 tracks in all – 70 of which are previously unreleased – along with the kind of deep history, detailed notes, and vintage images that always make these Bear Family boxes so essential. There have only been a handful of "best of" sets of Wynn's music on the market over the years – which makes this box long overdue. CD

A raunchy little soundtrack for this obscure juvenile delinquent film at the start of the 60s – done in a cool mix of modes that features plenty of rocking instrumentals, some sweet jazzy bits, and a few nice exotica tunes! For the music, it's almost as if composer Nicholas Carras was going through the trashbins at the bigger record labels – picking up the sorts of things that Liberty, Capitol, or Challenge might have left behind – and weaving them together as the perfect music for a film like this – definitely a cut above, and maybe even better than the sorts of rock music soundtracks of the time that featured bigger sorts of artists in the lineup. Most tracks are short, which makes the whole thing an even cooler pastiche – different than more formal soundtracks of the period! LP, Vinyl record album

First up is Cosmic Truth – a fantastic 70s album from Undisputed Truth – and the first to fully feature the new version of the lineup, after the Magictones had been recruited to form the second version of the group! The sound here is even funkier and more guitar-based than before – a fully-realized take on the Norman Whitfield modes that had been brewing up since his late 60s work with The Temptations – almost as tripped-out at times as early 70s Funkadelic – as if Undisputed Truth were being put forth as a Detroit challenge to the George Clinton universe! Production and arrangements are great – very far-reaching at times, with some bigger ideas in the mix – although all the tight funky soul elements that always made these guys so great. Titles include "1990", "Squeeze Me Tease Me", "Earthquake Snake", "Spaced Out", "Lil Red Ridin Hood", "Got To Get Me Some Lovin", and the great cut "UFO's". Higher Than High is a great later Motown effort from the Undisputed Truth – working in a groove that's a bit tighter and more upbeat than before, but still plenty darn great! Norman Whitfield is still very firmly in charge of the group's sound on the record – arranging, producing, and writing most of the cuts on the album – and he's doing a great job of keeping his sound fresh here – not just sticking in the bass-heavy styles of previous years, and instead moving into some fresher territory that has the group continuing to grow nicely. In a way, the whole thing's almost a precursor for the grooves to come on Norman's own Whitfield label – a great batch of well-crafted titles that include "Overload", "Higher Than High", "Poontang", "I Saw YOu When You Met Her", "Help Yourself (second version)", "I'm In The Red Zone", "Boogie Bump Boogie", and "Ma". Mark BegoAretha Franklin – The Queen Of Soul ... Book
Skyhorse, 2018. New Copy ... $6.99 18.99
A nicely expanded version of this important look at the career and music of Aretha Franklin – one that was first published at the end of the 80s, but which has been refined over the years to follow her changing career – and updated in this final edition, which covers the last decade of Aretha's time on this planet! Mark Bego doesn't pull any punches in his examination of Franklin – and while he clearly loves Aretha's music, he also gets at all the challenges she faced over the years – including some of the behind the scenes drama that impacted her music. The book is 430 pages, softcover, with a full color photo section in the middle, and a discography at the end. Book

Dave DeRoseAgile Experiments Vol 1 ... LP
Dave De Rose Music (UK), 2018. New Copy ... $11.99
Really compelling work from the farther reaches of the UK jazz scene – a series of "agile experiments" from drummer Dave DeRose – who works here with other musicians from the scene in a series of unbridled improvisations! The work was created with two guiding principles – the musicians could not discuss or plan their performance together in advance, and they would also play for a full hour, with no breaks at all! The idea grew out of a series of live performances, but then was captured by Dave in the studio – with results that are as varied as the musicians involved. Some selections are very unusual and almost abstract, others have a more familiar free jazz mode – and the ability of DeRose to shift in these spaces is one of the highlights of the set. The first volume includes performances with John Edwards on bass and Dan Nicholls on electronics; Rory Simmons on trumpet and electronics and George Crowley on saxes and effects; Dan Nicholls on electronics and Karl Vanden Bossche on percussion; Tom Challenger on saxes and Colin Somervell on bass; Sam Crowe on Rhodes and effects and Level Nevill Malcolm on bass; and Dario Rossetti Bonell on guitar and effects. Olivier Peters Quartet featuring Joan JohnsonWings Of Spring ... LP
Village (Germany), 1980. Very Good ... $9.99
A sweet little album of breezy jazz – with vocals by Joan Johnson on a number of tracks, and that modally grooving post-MPS sound that still resonated strongly on a few German labels at the end of the 70s! The real star here is Peters, whose work on saxes is great – kind of pinched in tone, in a snaking way that bubbles soulfully out of the album's best tracks. Johnson's vocals are nice, too – but they come to their strongest point when really challenged by Peters reed work, and by the driving piano of Walter Norris, who's also in the group. Titles include "Kekay", "Mr Steve", "Wings Of Steve", "Morning Mist", and "Happy Endings". LP, Vinyl record album

Jon RegenHigher Ground ... CD
Ropeadope, 2019. New Copy ... $9.99 15.99
A nice little record from Jon Regen – a singer who works in a space that's somewhere in between jazz and more familiar singer/songwriter modes – in a legacy that might begin with Ben Sidran in the 70s, and come up to present work by an artist like Jamie Cullum! Regen's got a nicely warm sound in his approach – but not one that's too smooth or commercial – as most of these songs are very understated, and done with a mix of lead piano instrumentation and other touches around the edges – sometimes maybe a bit of stepped-up rhythm, but never in a way that challenges the vocals. Titles include "Hole In My Heart", "Every Night", "Goodnight New York", "New Sensation", "Who Cares If Everybody Else Knows", "Jupiter Calling", and "Higher Ground". CD

Rockin RamrodsRockin Ramrods (clear vinyl pressing) ... LP
Beat Rocket, Mid 60s. New Copy ... $23.99 24.99
These ramrods are plenty rocking – a great gritty band from the Boston scene of the 60s – and one that's completely on fire with a mix of garagey numbers, and a few surprisingly dark little tunes! The music often has the guitars folded right into the rhythms, and some numbers have organ lines that beat most of their challengers – a list that would include The Mysterians all the way up to The Lyres – and it's clear that the Boston legacy was in very great hands during the short span this group issued rare singles for labels that include Plymouth, Bon Bon, Explosive, and Claridge – all of which are included in this great collection. Titles include "Jungle Call", "She Lied", "I Love You No More", "Play It", "Indian Giver", "The Girl Can't Help It", "You Went Away", "Mister Wind", "Bright Lit Blue Skies", "Willie's Plastic People Factory", and "Tears Melt The Stones". ✨✧ StereolabTransient Random Noise Bursts With Announcements ... LP
Duophonic, 1993. Near Mint- 2LP ... $29.99
The title's a mouthful, but it's also a key calling card for the legendary Stereolab – a group who effortlessly compressed the space between the 60s and 90s with this major label debut – and set a course for mainstream music well into the 21st Century! After the space of many years, the set still blows us away – and really lasts a lot longer than most of the supposed classics by their contemporaries – proof that the group were always using the past to see far far into the future! And although they got their start in the indie world, they really used the platform of Elektra to refine and focus their message – instead of being swallowed in the maw of Warner Brothers, Stereolab take up the challenges of greater professionalism – and hone their skills to an impeccable edge, crafting beautiful little tunes that are every bit as compelling as the promise of the album's title makes them out to be! Titles include "Tone Burst", "Golden Ball", "Pack Yr Romantic Mind", "Paus", "Jenny Ondioline", and "Analogue Rock". LP, Vinyl record album

Pete TerraceKing Of The Boogaloo ... LP
Somerset, Late 60s. New Copy (reissue)... $9.99
Pete Terrace challenges Pete Rodriguez for the title of "King Of The Boogaloo" in this live set recorded at Chez Jose in New York! The album's got a few tracks that say boogaloo, but which aren't – but that's still ok with us, because the bulk of the set is a hard grooving batch of uptempo groovers that would make anyone proud – and the record's easily one of Pete's best from the 60s! Includes covers of "El Pito", "At The Party", and "Bang Bang" – plus Marty Sheller-penned originals like "Do The Boogaloo", "I'm Gonna Make It", "Here Comes Pete", and "No! No! No!". Pete's vibes sound mighty nice, and the pianist in the group is nice and firey! LP, Vinyl record album

VariousSounds Of The Times – From The KPM & Conroy Music Libraries 1970 to 1977 ... CD
KPM/Vocalion (UK), 1970s. New Copy ... $18.99
A treasure trove of Brit sound library work – most of it from the legendary KPM 1000 Series, plus assorted bits from the Conroy label as well! The work here leans heavily towards funky jazz – those fuzzy, hard-driving tunes that always made KPM sides a key choice for action films and cop shows – and which have made digging through sound library records such a delight all these many decades later! The compilers did a really wonderful job with this set – creating a feel that's a bit different than the usual sound library collection – because although funky overall, the package also features some jazzy moments too – key cuts that are interspersed with the action moments to create a really fleshed-out sense of mood and feeling. Plus, the set list is huge – 25 tracks in all, running for well over 70 minutes – truly the treasure trove we promised at the start of this review, with titles that include "Soul For Sale" and "Tycoon" by Keith Mansfield, "Block Buster" and "Head In The Clouds" by Johnny Pearson, "Loco Motion" and "Soul Foot Strut" by Dave Gold, "Traffic" and "Challenger" by Alan Hawkshaw, "Short Cut" by James Clarke, "Heavy Traffic" by James Cameron, "Speculation" by David Lindup, "Vegas To LA" by Dick Doerschuk, "Tough Assignment" by Chris Gunning, "Speedway" by Nick Ingman, "String Boogie" by Brian Bennett, and "The Double Take" by Steve Gray. ✨✧ Jay-ZBlack Album ... CD
Roc-A-Fella, 2003. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
"This here is the victory lap," raps Hove midway through The Black Album, his supposed career-capper (for this stage, anyway), and if nothing here immediately dazzles us to the core the way the best of his past singles have done, overall this is probably the most consistent front-to-back listen of all his albums. One of the nicest things about the Black Album is the brevity. As tight as the best of his recent output has been over the last couple of years – from singles, to album tracks, to guest spots – Jay-Z's simply been TOO productive, which has diluted the overall power of his presence. That issue is addressed right off the bat here – with a very manageable 14 tracks, no guest rhymers, and a consistent overall sound and mood thanks in part to strong production by Kanye West, 9th Wonder, Neptunes, Timbaland, Eminem (who's baroque synth productions are getting dangerously close to going stale, but it fits Jay-Z's dramatic finale theme very well), Rick Rubin and DJ Quik. It's a wildly disparate cast behind the boards, but this thing flows incredibly well thanks to Jay-Z's predetermined mission to make a great album, not just a hot record. Smart ass critics are gonna whine that Jay-Z hasn't reinvented the wheel here or anywhere else in his career, but that was never the point. The point HERE is to go out on his own terms (for the time being, anyway) after achieving so much more than he ever would have dreamed, and as the clear victor of all of his challengers without really taking any parting shots (why the hell would he bother, when he's already won?) We may still have to lean towards Blueprint as his late masterpiece, but this is way up there. "December 4th", "What More Can I Say?", "Encore", "Change Clothes", "Dirt Off Your Shoulder", "Threat", "Moment Of Clarity", "99 Problems", "Justify My Thug", "Lucifer", "Allure", "My First Song", and a couple of brief interludes. ✨✧ Ben AustenHigh Risers – Cabrini Green & The Fate Of American Public Housing (hardcover) ... Book
Harper, 2018. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic book about a key locale in this fair city of ours – Chicago's famous Cabrini Green housing project, and all of the many challenges it faced as the decades moved on! Author Ben Austen has a great outlook on the project – as he moves past overdone cliches and oft-told stories about poor planning and underfunding – and instead also brings in the spirit of the community that grew around the housing site, and who shifted their goals and needs with the changes that took place in the 60s, 70s, and 80s – a story of survival and spirit that's augmented by the individual voices of residents of the towers. Austen mixes together history and urban theory with a good number of interviews – letting the longtime residents of Cabrini Green help shape a tale that often never features any input from the people who matter the most. 384 pages, hardcover. ✨✧ John CorbettListener's Guide To Free Improvisation ... Book
University Of Chicago, 2016. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A much-needed book for the open-minded listener – a well-written volume from jazz critic John Corbett – and one that's bound to widen your ears to a whole new realm of listening! The book's pocket-sized – maybe so that you can sneak it into a club when visiting a free jazz concert – and it's written in a style that's both personal, but very directive – with a full understanding of the complexities that come into play when listening to improvised music, and a guide towards facing some of the more difficult challenges involved! Corbett clearly loves this music, but without any sort of high ideals – none of the too-cool-for-school modes that are usually standard with the avant garde, and instead this very down to earth approach that shows the listener that they've got all the tools needed to enjoy the music themselves. The goal here (one we can totally endorse) is to bring the listener face to face with new and challenging sounds – but in a way that allows them to instantly contextualize them too – yet without having to carry years of jazz or musical experience into the process. The book is divided up into easy-to-digest sections – and penned with a surprisingly warm style too. Book

✨✧ TwilightStill Loving You ... LP
Luv N' Haight, 1981. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A lost bit of Cali soul from the 80s – the first album from Twilight, not really a group, but more of a solo studio project from Lawrence Ross! Ross was a shift worker at General Mills, but had some free time to conceive his dream soul album during the twilight hours of the day – hence the name of the "group" –and after slaving away on his off hours to put the whole thing together, he recorded most of this set within the space of a week playing most of the instruments himself! A few other guest artists came in to round out the sound, but there's definitely a personal quality to the record that belies Ross' close association with the whole thing – carefully written tunes that could have challenged the mainstream, had they gotten bigger production, but which have a great deal of charm since they're done here in a more stripped-down, indie-styled way. Twilight has all the best aspects of soul acts of the time – some tight groovers that mix up boogie rhythms with some warmer Cali soul – and a few mellower cuts that benefit from some cool spacey keyboards. Titles include "Play My Game", "Scorpittiarus", "We'll Be Special", "Love's High", "You Know It's Me", "Love's The Way", "Straight To My Heart", and "Just A Kiss Away". LP, Vinyl record album

That's a mighty classy truck stop on the cover of this album – and the set's a mighty classy batch of trucker-themed tunes from the catalog of Starday Records! These aren't the shlocky truck country tunes of the 70s, but instead some great material from the postwar years – a time when the interstates were really opening up, and the role of the truck was about to surpass the role of the train. The tunes here all mark the new challenges of the time, sometimes with a good deal of humor – and titles include "Gears" by Johnny Bond, "Man Behind The Wheel" by George Morgan, "Long Haul Weekend" by The Willis Brothers, "Big Footed Dan" by Benny Martin, "Big Rig Guitar" by Joe Maphis, "Truck Driving Buddy" by Frankie Miller, "Sleeper Cab Blues" by Tom O'Neal, and "Pinball Machine" by Lonnie Irving. ✨✧ Frank R HaydeStan Levey – Jazz Heavyweight – The Authorized Biography (hardcover) ... Book
Santa Monica Press, 2016. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Drummer Stan Levey shone most brightly during his west coast work of the 50s – where he was a key figure in both large and small group jazz performances – but he also had a much longer history, which included plenty of time away from the limelight – a rich story that's captured in great detail here by the author! As with some of the better jazz books of the period, Levey's story is one that deals not just with musical creation, but also ongoing employment – and some of the challenges that can face a musician with the integrity of Stan. The book also looks at his earliest years – both as a prize fighter, and a bebopper on the east coast – where Levey got his start before moving to greater fame in California. The book is 224 pages, hardcover, with some black and white images – and also includes a great "recommended listening" section at the end! Book
