Fela & Egypt 80Army Arrangement/Government Chicken Boy (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
Celluloid/Knitting Factory, 1985. Used ... $8.99
A richly expanded version of this key Fela album from the 80s – one that adds in a full extra bonus album's worth of material! The CD contains the full 30 minute version of "Army Arrangement", a great mid 80s tune that was one of Fela's strongest political tracks – an extended attack on the military-based "democracy" that led Nigeria during the 70s. Added to the track is the full version of "Government Chicken Boy", another 30 minute long number, one that attacks the complacent political establishment – to the tune of eerie keyboards and funky Afro rhythms! Fela & Roy AyersMusic Of Many Colors ... LP
Celluloid/Knitting Factory, 1980. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99 24.99
One of the best soul collaborations ever! Fela and Roy Ayers team up for this whopping album that brings together the best sides of these monster soul talents of the 70s! In keeping with Fela's work, the tracks are long and Afro-tinged, with a complicated groove that grows over the length of the track. And in keeping with Roy's work, the album has a sweet soulful feel, with lots of nice jazzy touches, cool vibes, and great vocals by Roy. Two long tracks, both classics: "2000 Black" and "Africa, Center of the World". Long overdue! LP, Vinyl record album

Lightnin' RodHustlers Convention ... LP
Celluloid, 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $11.99
Fantastic stuff – incredibly hard and incredibly funky, and a masterpiece all the way through! Long before there was any talk of gangster rap, Jalal of the Last Poets recorded this album of gamblin', pimpin', and hard double dealin'. It's a fantastic album-long ride through the dark side of the black underworld, and is the aural equivalent of a blacksploitation flick. Kool & The Gang provided the music – and Jalal tells the whole story throughout, in the same hard rappin' style he used with the Last Poets! The record's an undisputed classic, and includes the sample classic "Sport", plus loads of other righteous funky cuts like "Spoon", "Grit's Den", and "Sentenced To The Chair"! LP, Vinyl record album

MandingoWatto Sitta ... CD
Celluloid, 1984. Used ... $8.99
80s electro Afro grooving from Mandingo – not to be confused with the UK group who recorded electronic exotic albums in the 70s – but one of the New Africa crossover projects on Celluloid, recorded during their brief period of colonial expansion! The group mixes together traditional African instrumentation with a bit of 80s electronics – and features work on kora, percussion, and vocals by Foday Musa Suso – plus some drums by Hamid Drake, and guest keyboard work by Herbie Hancock on two tracks. Titles include "Dewgal", "Harima", "Muso", "Natural Dancer", and "Don't Worry". CD

Mandingo feat. Foday Musa Suso & Herbie HancockHarima (original, edit)/Dewgal ... 12-inch
Celluloid, 1984. Sealed (pic cover)... $3.99
From the "Watto Sitta" album, recorded for Celluloid by griot Foday Musa Suso, who plays mostly kora, inaddition to a variety of other percussion instruments. As you might expect from an 80s Laswell production there's some electro touches and Herbie Hancock guesting on keys, but for the most part the vibe is true to it's West African roots, two mellow laidback global grooves. 12-inch, Vinyl record

John McLaughlinDevotion ... CD
Celluloid/Movie Play, 1970. Used ... $4.99
An intensely jamming album from guitarist John McLaughlin – and a record that set a whole new tone for electric jazz in the 70s! The album was recorded shortly after McLaughlin's work with Miles Davis on Bitches Brew and Tony Williams on the first Emergency album – and in a way, it's a key piece of the jazz-rock fusion puzzle that has those two sets as cornerstones. McLaughlin's working here with keyboardist Larry Young from the Emergency group – playing both his usual organ on the record, plus a bit of electric piano – and the rest of the group includes bassist Billy Rich, plus superdrummer Buddy Miles – really giving a lot of power to the album's sound at the bottom! McLaughlin is getting into a bit of his mystic trip on the record, but is still playing with a lot of electric power here – plenty distorted and fuzzy on most numbers, and really jamming throughout! Titles include "Devotion", "Dragon Song", "Marbles", "Siren", "Don't Let The Dragon Eat Your Mother", and "Purpose Of When". CD

✨✧ Paulo MouraGafieira Etc & Tal ... CD
Celluloid, 1986. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great mix of styles from this enigmatic Brazilian saxophonist! Moura straddles two generations of music – and takes a few older tips from players like Pixinquinha, and mixes them up with more modern arrangements that have a nice strident groove. Paulo Moura plays alto, soprano, and clarinet on this one, and the tracks include "Alma Brazileira", "Dialogo", and "Rio Negro". CD
(Out of print. Disc has a few marks but plays fine.)

✨✧ Tony Allen with Afrobeat 2000NEPA – Never Expect Power Always ... LP
Celluloid/Comet (France), 1984. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Landmark material from the legendary Nigerian percussionist! NEPA is a great little album from Tony Allen – recorded in the mid 80s, but with a chunky groove that's very much in the style of his 70s Afro Funk work! The title track is one of Allen's best cuts ever – a really anthemic tune with a punchy hook that's as infectious as it is political – and other tracks on the set are equally nice, touched with some slight electronic bits, giving them a cool Celluloid Electric Africa vibe! Titles include the long numbers "When One Road Close" and "NEPA (Never Expect Power Always)", in regular and dub versions – plus the great closing track "Olokun". LP, Vinyl record album

Rosa Barba & Chad TaylorIn a Perpetual Now of Instantaneous Visibility ... CD
Corbett vs. Dempsey, 2021. New Copy ... $12.99 15.00
Drummer Chad Taylor is one of the most versatile performers we know – a drummer who can move easily between a variety of different settings, always finding the right touch for the right moment! Yet here, Taylor may be in one of his most unique settings to date – improvising on two long duets with Rosa Barba – an artist and filmmaker, and a musician who combines her talents here by playing cello, but with a celluloid bow – literally making music with the texture of film, as she slowly bows her instrument on these long, spacious lines that are matched with equally careful, sonorous work from Taylor on the drums! Chad is much more sonic than rhythmic throughout – really sounding wonderful as he brings all these new colors to his palette – on the two long improvisations on the set. CD

Zazou BikayeMr Manager (with bonus download – and bonus tracks) ... LP
Crammed (Belgium), 1985. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99
80s Afro grooves, recorded in Belgium – given a nice twist by the Crammed Discs label, which was one of the first to really open up African styles with more European elements! Bony Bikaye handles vocals, and Hector Zazou plays plenty of keyboards and adds in beat – so there's an electro-styled groove to most cuts, in a mode that's similar to some of the New Africa material on Celluloid Records from the same time! The remaining member of the group handles lots of saxophone solos – but the trio also get some studio help that includes more saxophone from Marc Hollander. Titles include "Angel", "Mr Manager", "Nostalgie", and "Soki Akei". Features the bonus track "Viva La Musica", "Signorina", and "Le Menteur". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes download – which also includes some bonus tracks!)
