✨✧ Bobby Bradford/Frode Gjerstad/Kent Carter/John StevensBlue Cat ... LP
No Business (Lithuania), 1991. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
We never cease to be amazed at the sonic sensibilities of the cornet of Bobby Bradford – a musician who always seems to turn out stunning work, no matter what the decade! Here, Bradford is heard in an unissued live performance that features one long improvisation – but a piece that has that usual mix of preconceived structure and individual freedom that Bobby seems to do better than most – a vibe that comes through especially well when the group are hitting some surprising moments of swing! The pairing of Kent Carter's bass and John Stevens' drums is superb – and the alto of Frode Gjerstad stands out again as one of the best pairings with Bradford since the reedwork of John Carter. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Chet Baker & Bud Shank/Leith StevensTheme Music From The James Dean Story (Japanese pressing) ... CD
Pacific Jazz (Japan), 1956. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Although the initial release of this music was a cheap attempt to cash in on the tragic fame of the late James Dean, this 1956 session was also one of the nicest big band dates to come out of the Pacific Jazz catalog of the 1950s! Chet Baker and Bud Shank are the featured soloists of the set – and the group's conducted by Johnny Mandel and Bill Holman, both excellent arrangers with a strong feel for soundtrack-oriented material of this sort. Tommy Sands sings vocals on a version of "Let Me Be Loved", which is the only standard on the set – as the rest of the tracks are originals by the great Leith Stevens. The band's filled with other west coasters that you'll recognize – and titles include "The Movie Star", "Jimmy's Theme", "The Search", "Lost Love", and "Rebel At Work". CD
(Out of print. Booklet has a small spot of sticker residue on the cover.)

✨✧ Carol Stevens/Dudley MooreThat Satin Doll/Theme From Beyond The Fringe ... CD
Atlantic/Collectables, 1957/1962. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Two obscure jazz sides from the Atlantic catalog – issued back to back on one nicely priced CD. Carol Stevens has a warm moody voice, and she sings here with some offbeat arrangements by Phil Moore – a great but under recognized 50s talent who had a uniquely dark vision that mixed elements of jazz and exoticism nicely. The backing includes guitar, piano, vibes, flute, clarinet, and percussion – and tracks include some Phil Moore originals like "Mood For You", "Lurelei", "Tender As A Rose", and "Saved It All For You". The Dudley Moore album's better than you might thing – as Dud's not a bad little piano player, and he more than makes up for his lack of pure jazz chops with an amazingly tight sense of rhythm that always seems to yield more grooves than you'd expect. Unfortunately, this album only features one of Dud's original tracks – the "Theme To Beyond The Fringe" – which is too bad, because he's one heck of a writer. Other tracks include "What's New", "I Love Paris", and "Just One Of Those Things". CD

✨✧ VariousWelsh Rare Beat – Lesser Spotted Welsh Obscurities From The Original Sain Back Catalogue ... CD
Finders Keepers (UK), Early 70s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Amazing grooves from a completely unlike source – Wales! With a strange language and a windswept location, one would hardly imagine the Welsh groove of the 70s to be anything of note – but it turns out that the records coming out on the Sain label were even more mindblowing than some of the best baroque French and Italian bits of the time! There's an approach here that's partly acid folk, partly jazzy groove – but also in a really unique territory that carves out its own space in sound – similar to the way that Serge Gainsbourg and others of his generation openly reached out to other styles of the time, and forged them into a surprisingly funky batch of tunes. And given that the Welsh language is highly consonant-based, and extremely rhythmic, even when there's not funky backings on some of these tunes, there's still an undeniable sense of groove that really amazing. Even the production is out of this world too – with strange twists and turns that out-do the best underground talents working at the time – and which create a real sense of timelessness to these tunes that's also only matched by our joy in discovering them! A real winner from the always-great Finders Keepers label – and like their Jean-Claude Vannier reissue, the kind of a record that will open your eyes to a whole new world in sound! Titles include "Dwr" by Huw Jones, "Penhryn Gwyn" by Heather Jones, "Breuddwyd" by Bran, "Calan Gaeaf" by Edward H Dafis, "Hwiangerdd" by Eleri Llwyd, "Mathonwy" by Huw Jones, "Chi Sydd Ar Fai" by Nia Ben Aur, "Hedfan" by Gillian Elisa, "Y Crwydryn A Mi" by Meic Stevens, and "Godro'r Fuwch" by Y Tebot Piws. Nino Tempo & April StevensDeep Purple ... LP
Atco, 1963. Very Good+ ... $5.99
A classic set from pop pair Nino Tempo & April Stevens – a duo who had a great way of folding their vocals together in the space of a catchy tune! Some numbers feature April singing alone, in that breathy style of earlier years – but the best tracks have both singing together, over jaunty backings from Jimmy Haskell – who romps things along with very bassy bottoms that are a wonderful mix of R&B-influenced rock and pop! Titles include the hit "Deep Purple",plus "Paradise", "Baby Weemus", "True Love", "It's Pretty Funny", "One Dozen Roses", "Indian Love Call", and "I've Been Carrying A Torch For You So Long That I Burned A Great Big Hole In My Heart" – proof that the pair had a sense of humor! ✨✧ Carolyn Crawford/Hodges, James, Smith, & CrawfordReady Or Not Here Comes Love/What Made You Think ... 7-inch
Kent (UK), Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Two great early tracks from Carolyn Crawford – both produced by Mickey Stevenson! "Ready Or Not" is a groover that has a bit of a Detroit soul vibe, but some slightly more 70s touches too – all a perfect setting for those amazing vocals that made Crawford so great as the decade moved on! "What Made You Think" has Crawford as part of the Hodges, James, Smith group – a great midtempo groove with percussion at the core, and a really catchy vibe as the four voices trade lines back and forth! 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Spontaneous Music EnsembleKaryobin – Are The Imaginary Birds Said To Live In Paradise ... CD
Island/Emanem (UK), 1968. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the first albums ever from this legendary British creative force in jazz – heard here at a time when the group was a quintet – with the mighty drummer John Stevens at the lead – alongside mindblowingly fresh performances from Evan Parker on soprano sax, Kenny Wheeler on trumpet, Derek Bailey on guitar, and Dave Holland on bass! The players are so new to the scene that Bailey is actually billed as "Dennis" on the back of the original album cover, and Kenny is listed as "Wheel" – but they all play here with the confidence and vision that would soon make them giants – and key players who'd show the world that the UK scene was every bit as free-thinking as those in the US and Europe. The album features one long improvisation – and Bailey is especially wonderful in the setting – making these ringing notes that scatter and skitter alongside Parker's beautiful soprano work – egged on by Steven's to move freely over the drum kit.
