Michael JohnsonAin't Dis Da Life ... LP
Sanskrit, 1977. Very Good+ ... $4.99
Lovely work from singer Michael Johnson – an obscure American vocalist from the mid 70s, with a sweetly folksy style that recalls the work of Cat Stevens, Paul Simon, or James Taylor, but which has a sense of depth that's all its own! The set is done in a lightly folksy style that also has some jazzy overtones – with Johnson on acoustic guitar alongside his vocals, and working with some nicely fuller arrangements. Titles include "OB Glad", "Our Snowflake Dreams", "Ain't Dis Da Life", "High On The Border", and "Mr Arthur's Place". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has light wear.)

Allegra LevyLooking At The Moon ... CD
Steeplechase (Denmark), 2018. Used ... $9.99
An album with a bit of a gimmick – songs about the moon – but one that quickly transcends that mode, thanks to the vocal strengths of Allegra Levy! Levy's definitely a singer who's working in a jazz-based style, but she's also got this very pointed, personal approach to phrasing that almost feels as if she's talking to us personally – almost a style that could be set up with more contemporary instrumentation in the backings, but which feels even warmer here in the company of Carmen Staaf on piano, Alex Goodman on guitar, an Tim Norton on bass. The lack of drums gives the trio a slightly softer (but not sleepy) vibe – one that seems to really push Allegra to the forefront, as she takes on an unusual mix of songs that includes some familiar standards, plus tunes by Nick Drake, Neil Young, and Cat Stevens. The album features a great take on "Pink Moon" – plus "Harvest Moon", "Moon Ray", "Moon River", "No Moon At All", "Polkadots & Moonbeams", "Moonshadow", and "Moonlight In Vermont". CD

Meic StevensOutlander ... LP
Warner/Blank, 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99 24.99
Possibly the biggest album ever from Welsh singer Meic Stevens – but a set that's still pretty darn obscure, nonetheless! The album's all in English, and was recorded as a key outing for Warner – before Meic went back to his homeland, and went virtually underground. The style's quite unique, a raspy blend of folksy elements and some slight more sophisticated tones – echoes of Dylan and Leonard Cohen in some of the arrangements, but all abstracted nicely once Meic's unique vocals come into play. All tunes are Stevens originals, and are often quite personally poetic – and titles include "Dau Rhosyn Coch", "Ballad Of Old Joe Blind", "Ghost Town", "Midnight Comes", "Yorric", "Love Owed", and "Left Over Time". Eden AhbezEden's Island & Beyond ... CD
Jasmine (UK), 1960. New Copy ... $14.99 15.99
A wonderful collection – one that features the legendary album by Eden Ahbez, plus other tracks that show his influence on postwar music! First up is the core Eden's Island set – an incredibly evocative record – one of the strangest of its kind, and an audio treasure that we've loved for years! Eden Ahbez first came into public prominence as the man who wrote "Nature Boy" for Nat King Cole – a dark, moody tune that was as mysterious and earthy as the man who wrote it! This album was recorded nearly a decade after Cole's original hit, and features Ahbez almost in Moondog-like territory – working in an amazing setting of odd instruments and exotic percussion – but also singing in this almost spiritualist kind of way! The record's got plenty of ties to the exotica scene of the late 50s – but also stand out from the pack with a mad vision that's all its own – a strange intersection of lines that one might draw between Moondog, Martin Denny, and Anton La Vey! Tracks include "The Wanderer", "Eden's Island", "Tradewind", "Full Moon", "Mongoose", "Market Place", "The Old Boat", "Island Girl" and "La Mar". CD then features 16 more bonus tracks – all compositions by Eden and work that shows others taking up his helm – titles that include "Palm Springs" by Ray Anthony, "Wine Women & Gold" by The Carsons, "Hey Jacque" by Eartha Kitt, "Frankie's Song" by Anita Ray, "Let Me Hear You Say I Love You" by Vicki Young, "End Of Desire" by April Stevens, "Sahara" by Bob Romeo & The Jungle Sextet, and "Song Of The Fool" by The Crew Cuts. Michel LegrandLa Piscine (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Universal (France), 1968. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99 39.99
An incredibly groovy late 60s soundtrack from Michel Legrand! La Piscine may well be one of the last under-reissued scores from Legrand's genius period – that time when he was hitting heavily on soundtracks for The Thomas Crown Affair, Umbrellas Of Cherbourg, and other classics. This one's got a feel that's right up there with those – a mix of jazzy styles, mod themes, and cool vocal touches – sometimes scatted a bit, with that raspy style we love in Legrand's singing. A few other tunes are a bit mellow, but in a great way that really fits the watery title of the set – cool and shimmering, and with a great sense of sound that really shows Legrand's talents. Titles include "La Piscine", "Blues Pour Romy", "Suspicion", "Dans La Soiree", and "De Souvenirs En Regrets" – plus "Run Brother Rabbit Run" sung by Delaney Bramlett and "Ask Yourself Why" sung by Sally Stevens. Sid RaminStiletto – Original Soundtrack ... LP
Columbia, Late 60s. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
Fantastic stuff – and one of the grooviest soundtracks you'll ever hope to own! Sid Ramin did a heck of a lot of work for TV soundtracks by the time this one came out – and he took all that experience, and came up with some fantastically swinging jazz tracks that have a sock-mod 60s groove! Hammond organ dances around the best numbers – blasting out with horns on variations of the very catchy "Stiletto" theme – and other great cuts mix flute, strings, and a bit of harpsichord or piano – creating that cool 60s easy sound that never gets old in our book! Titles include "Confrontation", "Goat Island", "Follow That Man", "Stiletto", "Tram", and the classic "Sugar In The Rain", a great light bossa number with some dreamy vocals from Sally Stevens! VariousSeparate Paths Together – An Anthology Of British Male Singer/Songwriters 1965 to 1975 (3CD set) ... CD
Grapefruit (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... $29.99 38.99
Key work from an amazing time in British music – a time when the softer sounds of folk music and harder sounds of rock groups stepped aside to allow a unique hybrid to emerge – the sophisticated singer/songwriter, who had an ability to borrow the best from both genres, yet come up with a spirit that was all his own! You'll recognize some of the names here from their work in other fields – but together, the artists represent a very rich document of this unique moment in music – work that's free from commercial pursuits, and which still feels very fresh and new all these many decades later – thanks to a strong ear for songcraft, and a musical vision that's especially surprising from some of the artists who later went on to crossover fame in the mid 70s. The package features 66 tracks in all, with very detailed notes on the well-chosen array of tracks – titles by artists who include Dave Cousins, Gary Farr, Peter Sarstedt, Wizz Jones, Beau, Meic Stevens, Ian A Anderson, Mike Cooper, Mick Audsley, Clifford T Ward, Richard Thompson, Kevin Ayers, David McWilliams, Al Stewart, Marc Brierley, Al Jones, Keith Riley, Bill Fay, Tony Hazzard, Dave Morgan, Phil Cordell, Ray Dorset, Graham Gouldman, Mike Heron, and many others! VariousSlow Grind Fever Vols 5 & 6 – Still More Adventures In The Sleazy World Of Popcorn Noir ... CD
Stag O Lee (Germany), Late 50s/Early 60s. Used ... $13.99
Those slow grinders are at it again – giving us a heady helping of their "popcorn noir" genre – a style they seem to have coined themselves! The groove here is every bit as great as previous volumes – bits of jazz, R&B, and more – all served up from a host of cool, catchy singles you'd never hope to find in the original – and which work here perfectly to create a great late nite sort of vibe! Make no mistake, most of these numbers are groovers – just the kind that are a bit more kicked back, for post-midnight listening! CD features material from vinyl volumes 5 and 6 – 28 titles that include "Senor Blues" by Rose Hardaway, "Strange Is Love" by The Marquis, "Haunted Sax" by The Night Caps, "Tremblin" by Birdie Green, "Nature Boy" by The Shields, "My Baby" by Nappy Brown, "I Want A Lip" by April Stevens, "Comprende" by Hillard Street with Jack Marshall, "Satan Is Her Name" by Steve King & The Echelons, "Hard Head (part 1)" by Jon Thomas, "Voodoo Drums" by Aki, "Wild Child" by Donnie Elbert, "Medicine Man" by Jeanette B Washington, "Backwoods" by Bill Doggett, "Voodoo Kiss" by Don Sargent & The Buddies, "Tie Me Tight" by Bob Kayli, "Laugh My Heart" by Malcolm Dodds, "Comin Home" by Eddie Jacobs, and "Sinners" by Freddie & The Hitchhikers. ✨✧ April StevensTeach Me Tiger ... LP
Imperial, 1961. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
Breathy brilliance from April Stevens – the sexy west coast singer who made some really wonderful records in the 50s! At some level, April was a bit like Julie London – in that she sang in a laidback, seductive tone that was quite risque at times – but she was also a bit more pop than jazz, and was always up for a catchy arrangement or a slight production gimmick to really help send over a tune! The title track was a hit single, but the whole album's great – and titles include "I'm In Love Again", "Do It Again", "Teach Me Tiger", "That's My Name", "When My Baby Smiles At Me", "I Want A Lip", and "In Other Words". LP, Vinyl record album
(Stereo pressing. Cover has light wear.)
