Johnny HodgesCastle Rock ... LP
Verve/Norgran, 1952. Very Good- ... $6.99
An undisputed Verve classic, and proof that Johnny Hodges could make damn good records away from Duke Ellington! The set features a number of small groupings of Ellington players – like Al Sears, Billy Strayhorn, Lawrence Brown, and others – but the sound is quite different than with the Duke – really jamming hard, with almost an R&B overtone at times – and a strong focus on the hard-edged Hodges alto sax! The classic "Castle Rock" is a wailer composed by Sears – and other tracks are all great too – including "Jeep Is Jumping", "Wham", "Sideways", "You Blew Out The Flame In My Heart", and "My Reward". ✨✧ TimeIce Cream Castle ... LP
Warner, 1984. Very Good ... $4.99
Classic! The third LP from the Time, and last before Morris Day went off and started his solo career – though by this point Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis had departed the group. Nonetheless, the sound is still tight modern funk, with Jesse Johnson and crew keeping things in the great post-Prince Minneapolis pop-funk sound, including some nice dance numbers like "Jungle Love" and "The Bird" – and Morris just being Morris on cuts like "My Drawers", "Chili Sauce" and "If The Kid Can't Make You Come". Honey ConeSoulful Sugar – The Complete Hot Wax Recordings ... CD
Hot Wax/Castle (UK), 1970s. Used 2 CDs ... $22.99
45 tracks of 70s girl group soul by Honey Cone – undeniably one of the strongest acts of their time! This trio of lovelies bridged the gap between the girl group sound of the 60s and the diva trio sound of the late 70s – bringing adult sophistication to a genre that had previously been a bit more kiddie-oriented, and showing that a female harmony soul approach could be just as appealing to a mainstream crossover crowd as it could to the jukebox set. The package includes all of their recordings for the Hot Wax/Invictus label – including the hits "Want Ads" (in both the long and original versions) and "Stick Up" – plus "Are You Man Enough?", "We Belong Together", "A Little More", "All The King's Horses", "VIP", "Deaf, Blind, Paralyzed", "The Day I Found Myself" (long and original versions), "The Truth Will Come Out", "I Lost My Rainbow", "Sittin On A Time Bomb", and lots more! The great fold-out booklet includes notes, discography, and photos! CD

Castle (UK), 1988. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An excellent live set by Roy Ayers – recorded back in 1988, but with a sound that's right up there with his classic work! Roy's working here in front of a very appreciative crowd at London's Ronnie Scott's night club – and there's clearly plenty of British rare groovers in the audience who really appreciate Roy's jazzy work on vibes, and the high quality of his backup group on the night. The set includes long live versions of classics like "The Spirit Of Doo Do", "I Wanna Touch You Baby", "Fast Money", "Running Away", and "Don't Stop The Feeling" – as well as "Everybody Loves The Sunshine" and "Battle Of The Vibes". Stelvio CiprianiFemina Ridens ... LP
CAM/Four Flies (Italy), 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
A wonderful soundtrack from Stelvio Cipriani – penned for this 1969 Italian thriller with psycho-sexual overtones, and done with music that has elements of both! At some points, Cipriani has all the erotic touches of his best early 70s work – but at others, he uses late 60s modes that evoke Morricone and Piero Umiliani, especially the latter's playful use of instrumentation in his more outlandish soundtracks! The music grows a bit more tense as the film moves on, but usually has a sense of lightness overall – and a number of tracks feature wordless vocals, sung either by Edda Dell'Orso or I Cantori Moderni. Titles include "Week End With Mary", "Love Symbol", "Hot Skin", "Chorus & Brass Fugato", "Rendezvous In The Castle", "Femina Ridens", "The Run In The Alley", and "The Shower". LP, Vinyl record album

Graham CollierDown Another Road/Songs For My Father/Mosaics ... CD
Fontana/Philips/BGO (UK), 1969/1970/1971. New Copy 2CD ... $14.99
3 incredible albums from the British jazz scene at the end of the 60s – all together in one 2CD package! Down Another Road is incredible work from one of England's greatest jazz talents – bassist Graham Collier, a player with an amazing ability to absorb a lot of the modern and progressive influences of his jazz generation – but all without succumbing to the same indulgences as them – a fact which resulted in a razor-sharp style that forged some of the freshest jazz ever to come out of the UK. This 1969 album is a masterpiece – filled with a modal groove and a strident searching theme, yet also as tight and grooving as most of the best Blue Note sessions from the same time. Harry Beckett's on trumpet, Nick Evans is on trombone, John Marshall plays drums, and Stan Sulzmann handles the reeds. Tracks include "Down Another Road", "Danish Blue", "The Barley Mow", and "Aberdeen Angus". Songs For My Father is a masterpiece of modernist soul jazz, with a sound that recalls the best late Blue Note work by Lee Morgan or Hank Mobley. Alan Wakeman's tenor is perfectly pitched, and searingly searching; Harry Beckett's trumpet is round, lyrical, and filled with soul; and the piano of John Taylor comps along in chunky modal grooves that make the whole album fall together brilliantly. Tracks include "Song One", "Song Two", "Song Three", etc – and they're all fantastic! Mosaics is a wonderfully searching session – filled with warm McCoy Tyner-esque modal moments, and searing post-Coltrane solos! The album comprises one long piece – Collier's "Mosaics" – performed live by a group that includes Alan Wakeman on tenor and soprano, Harry Beckett on trumpet, and Geoff Castle on piano. "Mosaics" has that amazing mid 60s Coltrane quality of going out in a spiritual kind of way – yet always returning to the groove, never getting too free, and always remaining firmly focused on the direction ahead. All players are great, and the record crackles with the intensity of a classic session on Impulse! CD

Chick CoreaMy Spanish Heart ... CD
Polydor (Germany), 1976. Used ... $5.99
Given that Chick Corea first got his start working in the New York Latin scene back in the 60s, the album's a bit of a return to his roots – even if the general theme here is Spanish, and not Afro-Cuban! The Corea Spanish Heart here is cast in some darker, more contemplative tones than more traditional Latin sides – but it borrows a wonderful array of modes from genres past – including bits of strings, percussion, and an overall more ambitious approach that sometimes shows up in Chick's piano work, or in the general construction of the tunes. The double-length set features a wide variety of Spanish-influenced numbers – played by Corea on acoustic piano and a variety of keyboards, with other players who include Don Alias, Jean Luc Ponty, Stanley Clarke, and Steve Gadd. Titles include "Love Castle", "The Gardens", "Night Streets", "The Hilltop", "Armando's Rhumba", "Prelude To El Bozo", "Spanish Fantasy", and "My Spanish Heart". CD

Dibia$e takes on 8-bit video game era samples – putting together a fun, funky blast of a hip hop instrumentals set that pairs retro futuristic synth tones, bleeps and bits from classic video game franchises with more straightforward timeless beatcraft! It's wonderful stuff that for sure speaks to gamers of a certain age, with some random vocal samples from tv spots and other thematic touches, but Dibia$e is a first and foremost a top notch producer, not a novelty album composer – so this works 100% as solid leftfield hip hop instrumentals. FeltPoem Of The River (CD/7 inch single box set – with poster, buttons, and gig flyers) ... CD
Creation/Cherry Red (UK), 1987. New Copy CD & 7 Inch ... $23.99
A gem of a record from Felt – one that has them complicating the sound they first brought to the Creation Records label – stretching out some of the songs a bit, and working with art rock legend Mayo Thompson of the Red Krayola in the production booth! The use of organ continues to be wonderfully strong – really giving the group a punctuation to their songs that their earlier material never had – but there's also still that great sense of overall sound that always made them so unique, and which works perfectly for the creative songwriting talents of Lawrence. Tracks include "Declaration" "Silver Plane", "She Lives By The Castle", "Stained Glass Windows In The Sky", "Riding On The Equator", "Dark Red Birds". CD comes in a gatefold sleeve, packaged in a 7" box – which includes a picture sleeve version of the "Ballad Of The Band" 7 inch single, 2 reproductions of gig flyers, a 2-sided wall poster, and 4 buttons – all with a sticker on the box that's signed by Lawrence! Four TopsComplete ABC/Dunhill Singles ... CD
ABC/Real Gone, Mid 70s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $22.99 23.99
You might normally associate the Four Tops with Motown – and the famous quartet certainly rose to fame in Detroit – yet during the 70s, the group also moved to ABC Records, where they cut some completely sublime material too! At some level, the move might have been warranted – as the Tops never got the same sort of special handling in later years that the Temptations were getting – and it's almost as if the move to ABC really helped the group open up and sound a lot more righteous for the 70s! Production on many numbers is by Dennis Lambert and Brian Potter – usually working with Steve Barri – and the sound is full and rich, but still a marvelous showcase for the lead vocals of Levi Stubbs, and the backing from the rest of the group. CD features 35 tracks in all – a fantastic introduction to these years – with titles that include "Keeper Of The Castle", "Are You Man Enough", "Am I My Brother's Keeper", "Inside A Brokenhearted Man", "Peace Of Mind", "Sweet Understanding Love", "Main Street People", "Ain't No Woman Like The One I've Got", "One Chain Don't Make No Prison", "Drive Me Out Of My Mind", "We All Gotta Stick Together", "This House", "Strung Out For Your Love", and "The Show Must Go On". Bold music, indeed – a tremendous blend of avant garde jazz and groovier moments from pianist Joachim Kuhn! The style is a great illustration of the two key poles of the MPS label at the end of the 60s – the company's willingness to take a chance on freer jazz artists, but also its ability to sometimes focus those artists in a bit more, and get them to record tunes with a strong rhythmic pulse and nice sense of groove. Kuhn's working here not only on acoustic piano, but also alto sax, gong, antelope horn, and more – and other members of the group include JF Jenny-Clarke on bass and cello, Jacques Thollot on percussion, and Stu Martin on drums and bells! Titles include the groover "Depression & Illusion", plus "Third World War", "Message From Upstairs", "The Child Out There Somewhere", "Vampires Castle", and "My Friend The Yogi". CD

Elektra, 1967. Near Mint- ... $14.99
A stunning second album from Love – a set that's still without the fuller orchestrations and baroque touches of Forever Changes – but which already shows the group moving in that direction! The rough, gritty edge of the group is very firmly intact – but they've already got a really fresh way of putting over a song – by complicating the rhythms a bit, going for unusual tonal colors, and furthering the really imaginative songwriting of Arthur Lee. Side one features some incredibly haunting shorter tunes that point the way towards Forever Changes – including the insanely wonderful "She Comes In Colors", the Latin-tinged "Que Vida", and the cuts "Stephanie Knows Who", "The Castle", and "Seven & Seven Is". Side two is a total freak-out – an 18 minute bluesy guitar jam, very over the top stuff – and quite unusual in length for a rock album in 1966! LP, Vinyl record album

An album dedicated to the great Django Reinhardt – but one that also comes across with plenty of west coast touches! The format is somewhat Django-esque – with lead guitar work from Joe Pass, plus rhythm guitar support from John Pisano – creating some of the guitar interplay you'd have in a gypsy swing record – but the groove's also a bit more modern than some of Django's classics, and there's a lighter, breezier approach here that's very much in the mode of other Pass records from the 60s – at least the small group ones! Tracks include "Django", "For Django", "Fluer D'Ennui", "Django's Castle", and "Nuages". LP, Vinyl record album

Fantastic funky fusion from the UK – served up here by a group of artists with roots that go back to the jazz rock and avant jazz scenes – but who work here with a lean, spacey, electric style that fits in more sharply with the generation of Herbie Hancock and George Duke! The keyboards are great – played by Geoff Castle on both acoustic and electric piano – and the group also features fantastic reeds from Ray Warleigh, a player who really seems to be reemerging here with a new sort of brilliance – as he blows deft lines on alto, soprano sax, and flute. The group also features Ron Mathewson on bass, Ed Speight on guitar, and a fair bit of percussion at the core, which gives some of the tunes a Latin or Brazilian fusion vibe – and titles include "Laying Eggs", "AC/DC", "Horros", "Moonchild", "I Can't REmember", "Everywhere Calypso", and "Iron Works". One of the coolest soundtracks of the 60s – presented here in a massive package that brings forth a wealth of never-reissued music! Piero Piccioni really hit his stride for the music to this film that was directed by its star – the effervescent Alberto Sordi – a fantastic send-up on the London scene of the time, set to a range of modly romping tunes! Piccioni handled the main music – often with loads of great piano and organ lines – but there's also some great vocal moments too, sung by Lydia MacDonald, Julie Rogers, and even Sordi – and the record also features a few touches from I Cantori Moderni, and a bit of music from Ennio Morricone too. Titles include the wonderful "Mr Dante Fontana", a nutty groover about the mod fashion scene in London – and it also features the famous tracks "Richmond Bridge" and "You Never Told Me". Titles include a few versions of "Fontana" and "Richmond", plus "Ascot Dream", "Magic Castle", "Tango Walk", "Drag Beat", "This Is Life", "Palace Parade March", "Babylon, I'm Coming", and "His Dream Has Come True". 3CD set features the full original album in both mono and stereo – plus 71 bonus tracks from the film score! Ruby Rushton is the name of the group, not an individual member – and it's also a name that's sure to be at the top of your list once you hear this incredible debut! The album's got this fantastic blend of funky and spiritual grooves – all played with a quality that's soulful, but effortless – almost vintage, but never trying to sound forced or copycat at all – just this easy-flowing groove that's incredible, and which kind of gives the record an instant classic sound from the very first note! Edward Cawthorne is the ersatz leader – as he wrote and arranged the whole set – but his work on flute and saxes is just one part of the album's wonderful groove, which also includes trumpet from Nick Walters, keyboards from Aidan Shepherd, bass from Fergus Ireland, drums from Eddie Hick, and percussion from Joseph Deenmamode – a lineup who seem to be tied together in soul and spirit right from the start. The London-based group are rock-solid throughout – hitting territory that's maybe more soulful than some of the spiritual currents of the Gondwana Records scene a few years before, but with an equal sort of depth. Titles include "Trudi's Mood", "Moonlight Woman", "Prayer For Yusef", "Where Are You Now", "Elephant & Castle", "The Camel's Back", "Song For Christopher", "Tisbury Truckin", "Together At Last", "Charlotte Emma Victoria", "Trudi's Mood (part 2)", and a nice remake of Herbie Hancock's "Butterfly". The tunes here often have a romping sort of rhythm – with lots of heavy acoustic bass and drums driving them along – but the group also features very strong trumpet from Yusuke Orita, and tenor and soprano sax from Junnosuke Fujita – two players who give the record a lot richer feel than some of the more groove-focused albums of this nature. The best thing about Nosferatu on the thematic front is that it's not too heavy handed with the horror effects or samples. They're here and they're a lot of fun, but it's a little smarter and a little more subtle in many ways – if we're going to compare his approach to legendary old school horror movie producers, Wun Two a little bit more Val Lewton than William Castle. VariousCold War Countdown – Country Music Goes To War 1952 to 1972 ... CD
Omni (Australia), 1950s/1960s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $16.99 19.99
A fantastic collection of offbeat country music songs from the postwar years – tunes that begin during the Korean War, end during Vietnam, and embrace a lot of Cold War anxiety in between! As with other titles from this great label – like the Hillbillies In Hell series – there's a great theme at the core, with so many different varieties of songs that we're amazed at how much the compilers were able to dig up! You'll probably recognize a few of these, but most of the tunes are from a pretty deep dig – and even longtime country freaks like ourselves are hearing most of these for the first time. Titles include "Freedom Monkey" by Doc Williams, "Bearded Bandit Of Cuba" by Art & Glenda Davis, "Fallout" by Red Castle, "Ballad Of Two Brothers" by Autry Inman, "Little Boy Soldier" by Wanda Jackson, "Crazy Vietnam War" by Stringbean, "Congratulations" by Arlene Harden, "The Patriot" by Marie Roberson, "The Craziest War Of The Universe" by Jefferson County Bluegrass Boys, and "I'm No Communist" by Grandpa Jones. ✨✧ Joe BataanRiot ... LP
Fania, Late 60s. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A real killer from the legendary Joe Bataan – an album of righteous power that really lives up to the dynamic promise of the title and cover! Joe Bataan's in top form throughout – serving up a blend of Latin grooves and 60s soul influences that few other artists of the time could touch – soaring and upbeat one minute, but mellow and laidback the next. There's a number of longer tracks on here that really move past the standard Latin Soul modes – bringing in bits of descarga jazz, instrumental soul, and mellower ballads to Joe's already-great blend of styles. The depth here is tremendous, and nearly every track's a winner! Titles include the slamming "It's A Good Feeling (Riot)", "Muneca", and "Mambo De Bataan" – plus the soul tracks "What Good Is A Castle", "My Cloud", "Daddy's Coming Home", "Ordinary Guy", and "For Your Love". ✨✧ VariousDown In The Valley 4 – A Heavy Selection Of Mod Rockers, Garage & Psych Funk Tracks (with bonus download) ... LP
Perfect Toy (Germany), 1960s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really great take on the style of the funky compilation – one that mixes in lots of gritty garagey rock tracks along with a bit of vintage soul! The blend here is surprisingly seamless – as the rocking tracks often have a funky kind of groove, and the soul cuts sometimes have trippier elements in the mix – which makes the whole thing come together with a strongly color-blind sense of sound – even though things are pretty darn soulful throughout! Most numbers are from rare singles, but there's also some unreleased cuts – and very detailed liner notes that shed plenty of light on these very groovy sounds. Titles on volume 4 include "Noah" by Grainger Hunt, "Electric Soul" by Frozen Sun, "Pax 72" by Ezra, "Pushin" by The Outer Edge, "Pseudo Funk" by Gin, "Listen" by Stars & Stripes, "My World Can Be Yours" by Sound Inc, "Keep On Walkin" by Rocky Barra & The Castle, "Away With Me" by Soul Intentions, "Who Needs You" by Forum, and "A Little Bit Of Your Love" by Morning Reign. ✨✧ FeltPoem Of The River ... LP
Creation/Cherry Red (UK), 1987. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
LP, Vinyl record album

David Friedman/William Allen CastlemanSpace Thing (silver vinyl pressing – with DVD) ... LP
Modern Harmonic/Something Weird, 1986. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99 24.99
A really strange little sci-fi soundtrack – penned for a film that was billed as one of the first "adult" science fiction movies – even though it was relatively tame compared with bigger budget porn to come! The low-fi masterpiece was directed by David F Friedman – not to be confused with the jazz musician of a similar name – and the songs here are credited to William Allen Castleman, although the notes don't really feature any other credits at all! Some of the sounds are what you'd expect from both genres of the time – combined – the jazzy romping of sexploitation film, mixed with electronic elements all around the edges that situate things in space – although maybe in modes that aren't as perfectly conceived as Italian scores of the period. Still, the whole thing's pretty darn great – and titles include "Hammond Orgasm", "Had It Comin", "Staccato Swagger", "Back To Bass", and "Infinite Worlds". LP, Vinyl record album

Amboy DukesJourney To The Center Of The Mind ... LP
Mainstream, 1968. Very Good ... $11.99
Early work from Ted Nugent – working here as the searing lead guitarist of the mighty Amboy Dukes! The Nuge doesn't sing on the set, but his guitar is definitely in the spotlight on most numbers – ripping out with a rawness that beats his later superstar work, and which is free to freak out nicely in this set of psyche-heavy sounds from the Mainstream label at the height of their late 60s greatness. Side one features a number of shorter Nugent-penned tunes, and side two is a slightly more complicated offering – a bit of a concept piece, with tracks that form a story over the side of the record. Titles include "Flight Of The Byrd", "Mississippi Murderer", "Dr Slingshot", "Scottish Tea", "I'll Prove I'm Right", "Conclusion", "Why Is A Carrot More Orange Than An Orange", and "Ivory Castles". Gil EvansGil Evans Orchestra Plays The Music Of Jimi Hendrix ... CD
RCA/BMG (France), 1974. Used ... $8.99
Gil plays Jimi? Sounds like a gimmick, but it comes off pretty darn great – and it helps you forgive him for trying to convince the kids that he's not as old as his grey hair might make you think! As always with Evans, the key to the album is a beautiful balance between the strength of the players and vision of the arrangements – a hip mix of musicians who include Billy Harper on tenor and flute, Marvin Hannibal Peterson on trumpet, and both Ryo Kawasaki and John Abercrombie on guitars! Arrangements are great too – handled by Tom Malone, Warren Smith, and Howard Johnson – all of whom make the album way more than just an instrumental reading of Jimi Hendrix tunes – and instead a great platform for improvisation that uses tunes that include "Up From The Skies", "Foxy Lady", "Gypsy Eyes", "Voodoo Chile", "Angel", "Crosstown Traffic", and "Castles Made of Sand". OdysseyOdyssey (MoWest) ... CD
MoWest (Japan), 1972. Used ... $9.99
A key moment in the west coast years of Motown – and one of the most unique albums the label recorded during the early 70s! The group's got a mixture of soul, funk, and rock – served up by a hip lineup of younger longhairs who make for a real change from the class and poise of Detroit in the decade before! There's a freewheeling vibe here that takes inspiration from Sly & The Family Stone, but which is handled with some more acoustic elements and jazzier phrasing at times too – a really great Free Soul quality that's kept the album an under-discovered treasure for years. The whole thing feels more like a lost A&M gem from the Laurel Canyon scene – but with a definitely soul bent, too – and titles include "Gossamer Wings", "Wondrous Castles", "Broken Road", "Black Top Island", "Sunny California Woman", and "Home Of The Brave". 31st Of February31st Of February (180 gram pressing) (2018 Black Friday Release) ... LP
Vanguard/Craft, 1968. New Copy ... $24.99
A great first album from this unusual Florida trio – a hip little group whose members would later end up working with The Allman Brothers, Boz Scaggs, and Cowboy – but who sound plenty darn great here on their own! The style's a lot headier than you might expect – almost with some of the deeper echoes you'd expect from the LA scene of the late 60s – the post-folk explorations of the headier side of rock, done with slight psych undercurrents, and a warm vocal style that's introspective, yet never overindulgent – a really great balance that should have made these guys as big as Buffalo Springfield or Crosby Stills & Nash at the time. A few moments get somewhat heavy, but never too much so – and the album's filled with great original numbers that include "Sandcastles", "Porcelain Mirrors", "Pedestals", "A Different Kind Of Head", "Free", "Pick A Gripe", and "Cries Of Treason".
