✨✧ Betty CarterFinally – Betty Carter ... CD
Roulette/Blue Note, 1969. Used ... $5.99
Mellow but compelling work from Betty Carter – singing here with the Norman Simmons trio in an album of material pulled from 2 different live dates in 1969. There's a few nice numbers where the group really opens up – and Betty pushes the envelope vocally, in a style that she'd explore more fully in her later work on her own label. The tracks are mostly standards, but the album features a great version of Randy Weston's "Ego", plus the tracks "All Through The Day", "Body & Soul", "I Only Have Eyes For You", and "Seems Like Old Times". ✨✧ Betty CarterOut There With Betty Carter ... LP
Peacock, Late 50s. Near Mint- ... $28.99
A fantastic album by Betty Carter – and certainly her rarest – not nearly as "out there" as you might guess from the title, but still a sparkling set of modern jazz vocals! The album was recorded with arrangements by Gigi Gryce, plus some help from Melba Liston – and a all-hip cast of players that includes Kenny Dorham, Sam Jones, Sahib Shihab, Benny Golson, and Wynton Kelly – all coming together in small group formation and swinging along magically with the Betty Carter groove. Betty's voice is in fantastic form – way more swinging and free than on some of her earlier sides, in a way that points the direction towards some of the groundbreaking work she'd do on her own label two decades later! Titles include "All I've Got", "Make It Last", "Foul Play", "Babe's Blues", and "You're Driving Me Crazy". LP, Vinyl record album
(Nice Japanese pressing, Sony/Columbia! Back cover has some light aging, but front looks great.)

✨✧ Betty CarterRound Midnight (Roulette) ... CD
Roulette, 1975. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Excellent work from Betty Carter – much more sophisticated than some of her 60s work! Betty's captured here in her hip trio format that she developed to fantastic heights during the 70s. Betty sings standards and originals with a warmth an imagination that we can hardly describe accurately – bringing emotion into the songs that we'd hardly heard in earlier recordings, and using a trio in ways that we'd never heard before with a vocalist. Incredible stuff all the way through, very much on a par with any of Betty's later work, with "Do Something", "My Shining Hour", "What's New", "Round Midnight" and "I'm Pulling Through". CD

Chris CarterArchival 1973 to 1977 (blue vinyl pressing – with download) ... LP
Mute, Mid 70s. New Copy ... $13.99 22.98
Early and amazing sounds from electronic genius Chris Carter – material recorded in his home studio during the mid 70s – with a style that clearly lays the blueprint for his collaborations to Throbbing Gristle! Yet without any vocals or other noise, you can really hear the Carter component of the music in a wonderful way – different even than his later collaborations with Cosi Fanni Tutti, even when spare – as the whole vibe here is maybe a more condensed version of Krautrock electronics, taken into the space of songs that are just a few minutes long – but which also have a lot more darkness than other electronic work of the time. That sense of darkness is key – as these tracks are subtle, but very different than spacier or more calming music of the type – proof that Carter was really an emotional pioneer when it came to this side of the spectrum. Titles include "Warm Hair", "Nodes", "Head Less", "Jet Age", "Hexfoil", "Black Powder", "Ghost Trains", and "See Sick". LP, Vinyl record album

Chris CarterMondo Beat (clear vinyl pressing – with download) ... LP
Conspiracy International/Mute, 1985. New Copy (reissue)... $13.99 22.98
Seminal solo sounds from Chris Carter – best known for his work with Cosey Fanni Tutti, and as a core member of Throbbing Gristle – out here in slightly different territory on his own! Chris follows the spare electronics of his work with Cosey – and some of the tracks definitely have the "beat" promised in the title – but at a level that's nicely subtle, and never sacrifices the overall sonic complexity for the sake of a groove! The record's a very early variant of modes that would later be handled less-skillfully by the end of the decade by so many others – and sounds much better here in the hands of one of the originators – on titles that include "Mondo B", "Moonlight", "Real Life", "Noevil", "Nobadhairdo", and "Beyond Temptation". And be warned – the cover says "this record contains subliminals"! LP, Vinyl record album

Clarence CarterDynamic Clarence Carter ... LP
Atlantic, 1969. Very Good+ ... $13.99
Seminal southern soul from the legendary Clarence Carter – one of his early killers for Atlantic Records, all of which really stand out from most of his work to come in later years! There's a raw, raspy brilliance here that's undeniable – the blind singer stepping out with incredible confidence on a host of tunes that really run the gamut – numbers of love and loss, mixed with a few more contemporary pop tracks – but all given a unique Muscle Shoals twist that really transforms them. Carter wins our heart from the start with his version of "I'd Rather Go Blind" – then keeps on soaring through cuts that include "Think About It", "Steal Away", "Look What I Got", "That Old Time Feeling", "Let Me Comfort You", "Weekend Love", "Light My Fire", and "Too Weak To Fight". LP, Vinyl record album

Fame/Kent (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
Clarence Carter's first few years of Fame Studios singles – simply put, some of very best southern soul of this or any other period – both sides of each single Clarence cut with Rick Hall at Fame from 1966-1973! Recorded at the vaunted Muscle Shoals studio during the peak years of the facility and Clarence's career – what more can we say? The production and arrangements by Hall personify the sound and style of the southern soul era – and Clarence's capability to truly emote, as well as demonstrate a sly wit and unique personality – ultimately transcending all trends at the time! Absolutely essential material and it sounds as great as ever – with mastering direct from the Fame masters tapes too. James CarterJames Carter Organ Trio – Live From Newport Jazz ... CD
Blue Note, 2019. New Copy ... $8.99 14.99
A fantastic little album from tenorist James Carter – every bit as soulful as ever, and maybe even a bit funky too! The approach is wonderful – a bold trio with lots of Hammond from Gerald Gibbs and heavy drums from Alexander White – oddly tuned to songs from the book of Django Reinhardt, but done in a way that's completely different overall! There's not a trace of gypsy swing in the mix – and with no guitar in the group, there's no real Django element at all – just long, tight, funky grooves served up by a really great trio – with Carter blowing strongly, and with a heck of an edge! Titles include "Le Manoir De Mes Reves", "Melodie Au Crepuscule", "Anouman", "La Valse Des Niglos", "Pour Que Ma Vie Demeure" and "Fleche D'Or". CD

✨✧ John Carter & Bobby BradfordSelf Determination Music ... CD
Flying Dutchman/BGP (UK), 1970. New Copy ... $8.99 14.99
A landmark recording – one of a handful of early documents of the avant garde LA scene, featuring a nimble quartet headed up by the inventive frontline of John Carter on reeds and Bobby Bradford on trumpet, over the fluid rhythm team of Tom Williamson on bass and Chicago expatriate Bruz Freeman on drums! Carter and Bradford's energetic approach followed its own line of development, much in the way that other small cells of improvisers were developing their own take on the "new thing" in the post-Coltrane/Coleman environment of the late 60s and early 70s throughout the country. The compositions unfold in a way that implies both multi-linear improvisation and composed events, but blurs the line between the two, all the while played with a great deal of fire and few of the intellectual abstractions of other free players! Titles include "The Sunday Afternoon Jazz Blues Society", "The Eye Of The Storm", "Loneliness", and "Encounter". CD

Emanem (UK), 1979/1982. New Copy 2 CDs ... Just Sold Out!
Previously unreleased material from the duo of Bobby Bradford and John Carter – two players who created ferocious energy together in their famous LA quartet of the late 60s and early 70s, but who here get at a completely different sound of their talents! In a way, the record really represents the growth that Carter had as a musician by this time – his wonderfully lyrical, evocative work on clarinet – which carries some echoes of Jimmy Giuffre's freeness on the instrument, but a more deeply personal quality as well – quite earthy and organic at times, with these really beautiful tones! Bradford's cornet really seems to follow suit strongly – beautifully blown, but at a level that's more intimate than we've heard from Bobby before – really wonderful phrasing that's free, but still always quite tuneful too. The set features a few tracks with solo clarinet, and one solo cornet – and this special 2CD package is an improved version of the previous releases of the music, with even better sound than before. Titles include "Tandem", "Petals", "Angles", "Circle", "Sweet Sunset", "Swiss Account", "And She Speaks", "Les Masses Jigaboo", "She", and "Echoes From Rudolph's". CD

Ron CarterUptown Conversation (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Embryo/Atlantic (Japan), 1970. Used Gatefold ... $24.99
A beautiful album by Ron Carter – and quite rare, too! The record features a group that's got a nice 70s modal soul jazz sound – with players that include Herbie Hancock on acoustic and electric piano, Hubert Laws on flute, Sam Brown on guitar, and both Billy Cobham and Grady Tate on drums – all working in sweet small group mode alongside Carter's excellent work on acoustic and Fender bass. The sound is sometimes spacey, sometimes groovy – and marks a key chapter in Carter's career, one that has him stepping out of the background into a great role as a leader – setting the stage for many more albums to come in the 70s! Titles include the very funky "Uptown Conversation", plus the tracks "Half A Row", "Doom", "Little Waltz", "Ten Strings" and "Einbahnstrasse". Very soulful, with a stone mellow moody groove! CD

Ron Carter has always been way more than a straight jazz bassist – especially in the past few decades, where his collaborative spirit has taken him into territory we never would have imagined early on in his career! Here, he works alongside writer Danny Simmons – whose words inform most of these tracks, read by Simmons himself. Carter plays these amazing basslines that are vivid and illustrative while Danny reeds – and a few tracks change up the approach slightly, one with a reading from Liza Jessie Peterson, two more with trio performances that feature Donald Vega on piano and Russel Malone on guitar. Titles include "Tender", "The Final Stand Of Two Dick Willie", "For A Pistol", "The Jigaboo Waltz", "The Brown Beatnik Tones", and "Feeling It Coming On". CD

A classic album of soul duets – and one of the deeper records cut by Betty during the 60s! The arrangements are by the great Marty Paich, and although there's some singers in the background, the overall sound is still pretty nice and soulful. One of those great dates from Benny Carter's later years – a time when he'd stepped back from doing big arrangements, working with larger group, and returned to some of the smaller combo modes that really made him great during his 50s years on Verve! No surprise, this set's produced by Norman Granz, with just the right easygoing flair to open up the most soulful aspects of Carter's alto sax – set up nicely in a group that also features Milt Jackson on vibes, Joe Pass on guitar, and Tommy Flanagan on piano. Titles include the sweet original "A Walkin Thing" – almost a soul jazz number – plus "Easy Money", "Blue Star", "I Still Love Him So", "Green Wine", and "Malibu". CD

Contemporary (Japan), 1958. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Benny Carter swings material from the 20s – but the results are a lot better than you might expect! We'll be honest in saying that the cover and theme of this one always made us figure the record was some sort of "old timey" affair – but Benny's surprisingly cool on the record, and is working in a small group mode that may well be even more deftly compelling than his earlier combo sides for Verve! The group here is only a quartet – with Benny on alto and trumpet, Earl Hines on piano, Leroy Vinnegar on bass, and Shelly Manne on drums – and it's possibly the modern rhythm section that gives the record a nicely soulful groove, and lets the tunes come off as more than just rehashed classics. Carter's tone on the alto is great – and very nicely recorded, with that edge that was showing up strongly in these later years – and titles include "Laugh Clown Laugh", "Thou Swell", "Who's Sorry Now", "A Monday Date", "Someone To Watch Over Me", "In A Little Spanish Town", and "Mary Lou". CD features 3 bonus tracks! CD

One of those records that just makes us say "wow" right from the very first note – a perfect showcase for all musicians involved, and a really mighty meeting of the creative minds! We've really loved the strong return to form that Matthew Shipp has given us on piano in recent years – and of course, the basswork of William Parker is always tremendous – but they both somehow rise even more to the top alongside the drums of Gerald Cleaver and tenor, trumpet, and flute of Daniel Carter – in a session that's wonderfully spiritual, very rhythmic, and often quite straight at times! There's a balance between the avant impulses of the players and the collective action of the group – almost recalling the loft jazz years, but more contemporarily righteous too – on titles that include "Majestic Travel Agency", "Scintillate", and "Ear-Regularities". CD

One of Ron Carter's best from the 70s – a hip and subtle effort recorded for CTI, with a small group that includes Joe Henderson on tenor, Roland Hanna on piano, and Billy Cobham on drums! Henderson's tenor work dominates the album, and the long tracks really let him snake around mightily – blowing with that dark edge that we totally love, and taking the record in much different directions than some of Carter's other albums. Richard Tee also plays electric piano on the title "117 Special" – and other tunes include "A Feeling", "All Blues", "Rufus", and "Will You Still Be Mine". LP, Vinyl record album

Ron's done many different styles of recordings over the years – but here, in a straight jazz outing, we're reminded all over again of those wonderful qualities that have made him so great for many decades – his ability to provide a rock-solid swing while also stepping forward more strongly in the forefront than some other musicians might – never dominating too much, or sounding gimmicky – but always note-worthy and present, which is saying a lot in a lineup that includes Renee Rosnes on piano, Jimmy Greene on tenor, and Payton Crossley on drums. New Jazz/OJC, 1961. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A haunting and unusual batch of tracks from bassist Ron Carter – working here with a group that includes spiritual modernists Eric Dolphy on reeds and Mal Waldron on piano – both players who really add a lot to the set! In a way, the album's more like Dolphy's own work as a leader from the time than the sort of music usually associated with Carter – and Ron really seems to let the reedman shape the overall sound of the set with his tremendous work on alto, flute, and bass clarinet. Carter plays a bit of cello in addition to his bass – giving the record a nicely eerie sound at points – and Waldron's piano, as always, is excellent during this point in his career. Titles include Randy Weston's "Where" and "Saucer Eyes", plus "Bass Duet", which features Carter dueting with George Duvivier, and a very nice version of "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise". CD

The film's set in the 30s, so there's a few period songs on the album that have an older jazz feel – including two with vocals by Reiner – but the film was produced in the 60s, and the best tracks have some really nice Quincy Jones jazzy touches – with some especially nice woodwind passages that dart around magically! A real lost chapter of 70s genius from reedman John Carter – a set done after his better-known recordings with Bobby Bradford, in a style that's much more spacious overall! The material features a trio – with Carter on both soprano sax and clarinet, both instruments he plays with an incredible dexterity and sensitivity in sound – much looser and more open to sudden shifts of inspiration than his music with Bradford – with accompaniment from Stanley Carter on bass and William Jeffrey on drums and percussion! The style is free, but never indulgently so – and Carter finds this way to always reach for melodic moments even at his most intense – creating the kind of magic that few other musicians might with his instruments. Titles include "Echoes From Rudolph's", "To A Fallen Poppy", "The Last Sunday", "Armin", and "Angles". 2CD set adds in a whole disc of extra material from the trio – with a 19 minute "Echoes From Rudolphs/To A Fallen Poppy", and a very long stretch of different improvised passages! Maybe the greatest moment ever from Brit soundtrack genius Roy Budd – an artist who started with his roots in jazz piano, but who really explodes here in a range of groovy styles! The main title is an incredible blend of Eastern percussion and moody jazz – and other cuts bring in some trippier elements, mixed with funkier bits and warmer moments – all at a level that have Budd even outdoing the best late 60s work by Lalo Schifrin! The keyboards are often at the forefront – either acoustic or electric – and the album's got so many groovy grooves, with such variety, it's got a feel that's much richer than the usual soundtrack set. Titles include "Love Is A Four Letter Word", "Carter Takes A Train", "Looking For Someone", "The Girl In The Car", "Livin Should Be This Way", "Manhunt", "Goodbye Carter", and "Hallucinations". This fantastic 3CD set is overflowing with greatness! First, the whole thing comes in a heavy book-style cover – with dozens of pages of notes, photos, and images from the film – and CD2 features 18 more rare mixes of songs from the film – a great addition to the 22 tracks on CD1 – making for a whopping 40 tracks in all. CD3 features 19 more Roy Budd grooves, mostly from soundtracks – songs that include "Mr Funker", "Diamond Fortress", "No Cooperation", "Cassette Jazz", "How Can We Run Away", "Fear Is The Key", "Who Needs Love Anyway", "Versailles Exit", and "Jazz It Up". A&M/Verve, 1977. Used 2 CDs ... $26.99
2 CD set of the albums "You Can't Go Home Again" and "The Best Thing For You", as well as 9 bonus tracks! A surprisingly great electric session by Chet Baker from the 70s – and a record that's got a bit more force and power than most of his other sets at the time! The format here is a bit tighter and more focused than Baker's recordings for CTI from the period – with electric piano from Kenny Barron or Richie Beirach on all tracks, plus guitar on 3 of the album's 4 tracks, and a fair bit of other horns to flesh out the overall sound. The approach isn't exactly funky, but it's quite driving at times – and Baker's work on trumpet is more sharply pronounced in the setting – a bit bolder and less sorry for itself, with a majesty that rises above the potentially-cluttered feel of the set to take its own at the top. Titles are all long – and include "Love For Sale", "Un Poco Loco", "You Can't Go Home Again", and "El Morro". Lost material by Chet Baker – recorded for his late 70s album You Can't Go Home Again, and released in this special package after his untimely death in 1988. As with the album that did get released, there's a focus here that's a nice change from some of Baker's looser European material of later years – a sense of Chet's presence and phrasing that comes through quite strongly, and which is supported here by a sensitive group of top-shelf accompanists who include Paul Desmond, Kenny Barron, Tony Williams, and Ron Carter. The set features a great 17 minute take on "El Morro" by arranger/producer Don Sebesky – plus the tracks "Oh You Crazy Moon", "If You Could See Me Now", "The Best Thing For You", and "You've Changed".
