Gene RainsRains in The Tropics – Songs & Sounds From Far Away Lands ... CD
Decca/Captain High (Germany), 1962. New Copy ... $6.99 16.99
A really wonderful album from the height of the exotica years – but a set that's got a fair bit more jazz in the mix than most from that generation too! Gene Rains plays vibes – and moves between moodier moments, ala Martin Denny/Arthur Lyman, and more straightforward jazz styles – which often have some great modal elements in the mix! The Rains group played hotels in Hawaii during the late 50s and early 60s – but are maybe more like a Pacific take on territory of the Quartette Tres Bien, thanks to strong work from Allen Watanabe on drums, Archie Grant on bass, and Byron Peterson on piano. Titles include "Mapuana", "Bancock Cock Fight", "Tiki", "Off Shore", "Shadow Of Love", "Jasmine & Jade", and "Lonely Winter". CD

Sondi SodsaiSondi ... CD
Liberty/Captain High (Germany), 1959. New Copy ... $6.99 16.99
An unusual vocal set, issued by Liberty Records during the height of its exotica years – and a strange combination of instrumental modes with Sondi's very unusual vocals! Backings are by Hal Johnson – an unsung hero in the Les Baxter/Martin Denny mode – and he's especially strong on percussive touches to evoke an imagined East, which is then balanced with Sondi's vocals – in English, but accented strongly with her Thai roots! And in keeping with the lack of sensitivity of the times, the songs are a mix of pan-Asian themes – with titles that include "China Nights", "Sondi", "Bali Hai", "Siamese Cat Song", "Buffalo Song", "Burma Train", "Sondi", and "Budda Knows". VariousKatanga/Ahbe Casabe – Mo Blues & Rhythm, Popcorn, Exotica, & Tittyshakers (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Captain High (Germany), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $5.99 16.99
The "exotic" in the title is certainly well-placed – as many of these tracks take a familiar instrument, and use it in a slightly unusual way – a saxophone, piano, electric guitar, or something else – often set to grooves that start out in an R&B, early rock, or jazz-based style, but move into much groovier territory too! Some of these numbers have the spirit of the cuts we love in the Jukebox Mambo series – and others draw in elements of postwar Latin or exotica styles – while still keeping things pretty soulful overall! CD brings together material from the long-deleted Katanga and Ahbe Casabe 10" vinyl releases – with tracks that include "Nene Aman" by Artie Barsamian, "Green Onions" by Claus Ogerman, "Classie's Whip"b y Classie Ballou, "Cleopatra Kick" by Jack LaForge, "Lucky Is My Name" by Bruce Cloud, "They Took John Away" by Steve Arlen, "Shadow Street" by Kip Tyler, "Cleopatra" by Jamie Coe, "Katanga" by Ike Turner, "Lucky Me" by Chance Hallyday, "Ahbe Casabe" by Marti Barris, and "Thirteen Women & One Man" by Dickie Thompson – plus two bonus tracks "Riddle Of The Papawhos" by Danny Staton and "Pu Chun Ga (Sweet One)" by Elena Madera.
