CapricornI Need Love (voc, inst) (Delirium) ... 12-inch
Delirium (Italy), Early 80s. Good+ ... $12.99
A weird little electro single from Italy – one that's got some great jagged beats on the intro – popping and crackling in breakdance frenzy before the darker, starker lyrics come into the mix. The tune was arranged by Simonetti – and the instrumental mix is really the one to go for – as it's filled with dark keyboards, choppy guitar, and a great drum-box heavy groove! 12-inch, Vinyl record

Colgems, 1967. Very Good ... $7.99
A fantastic set from The Monkees – maybe the record that really had them coming together and finding that special groove that was all their own! The set features their completely sublime "Pleasant Valley Sunday" – but also has this great range of unusual material that seems to let everyone get some great space in the spotlight, while also hinting at trippier inclinations too – on other cuts that include "Love Is Only Sleeping", "She Hangs Out", "Cuddly Toy", "Hard To Believe", "What Am I Doing Hangin Round", "Star Collector", "Salesman", "Star Collector", and the completely bizarre "Peter Percival Patterson's Pet Pig Porky". Esther PhillipsCapricorn Princess ... CD
Kudu/Reel Music, 1976. Used ... $9.99
A pretty amazing set from Esther Phillips – her final album for Kudu – and a beautiful mix of soaring soul sounds from one the most unique, emotionally-inflected soul vocalists of her era! Esther's in prime Kudu mode here – working with jazzy arrangements by David Matthews and Pee Wee Ellis, adding her unique, grit-inflected soul chanteuse vocals to a smoother mix of instrumentation that creates a perfect counterpoint that took her way past her earlier work! There's also a couple of really sweet disco skewed numbers that work incredibly well – with spacier bits of synth and a dancefloor soul bed of percussion and rhythms – and in general, the arrangements are pretty great from track-to-track! Players include Randy Brecker and Mike Brecker on trumpet and tenor sax, Bray Miles on synthesizer, Bobby Lyle on clavinet, Eric Gale on guitar, Joe Farrell on tenor sax and alto flute, percussionist Ralph MacDonald and other excellent name musicians and others bring a grand sweep and sweeter intimacy when the mood requires. Titles include "Magic's In The Air", "A Beautiful Friendship", "Boy I Really Tied One On", "Higher & Higher", and "All The Way Down". CD

Gregg AllmanLaid Back (2CD edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Capricorn/Mercury, 1973. New Copy 2CD ... $19.99 21.99
Greg Allman's excellent solo debut – all the more impressive given that it came out just weeks apart from the Allman Brothers' classic Brothers & Sisters – here's a southern rock legend stepping out and showing different sides of his immense talent around the same time his band was also near a creative peak! Greg's uniquely expressive voice is in the spotlight here, on tunes that touch on laid back southern rock, but gospel blues & soul tinged, too, sans guitar heroics for the most part. Includes the eternally great "Midnight Rider", "Queen Of Hearts", "Please Call Home", "Don't Mess Up A Good Thing", a really cool country rock take on "These Days", "Multi-Colored Lady", "All My Friends" and certainly only of the fresher takes "Will The Circle Be Unbroken". This 2CD deluxe edition is really loaded – with early mixes of the full album following the remastered classic version in Disc 1 and demos, outtakes, alternative version, live recordings and more on Disc 2 – including "Wasted Words", "God Rest His Soul", "Song For Adam/Shadow Dream Song", "Melissa" (Live At The Capitol Theatre) and lots more. 34 tracks on 2CDs. ✨✧ Allman BrothersBrothers & Sisters ... LP
Capricorn, 1973. Very Good ... $9.99
The Allman Brothers at their best – and a key 70s set that may well have the group working at their peak! All their best southern roots are firmly tied together here – not just the country-touched approach to rock that was the group's calling card, but also their ties to some of the Georgia soul scene as well – an element that really surfaces in some of the album's piano lines and rhythms, which really help underscore the depth of the tunes – and give the group a solid footing that's stronger than some of their more cliched contemporaries. These tunes hold up wonderfully over the years – and have a visionary approach that almost sparkles even more strongly here in the 21st Century than when we first started digging their sounds on radio back in the 70s. Titles include "Southbound", "Jessica", "Pony Boy", "Wasted Words", "Ramblin Man", "Come & Go Blues", and "Jelly Jelly". LP, Vinyl record album

Capricorn/Vampi Soul (Spain), 1972. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $26.99
The debut album from Maxayn – a funky female talent who deserves to be mentioned in the same territory as Betty Davis and Yvonne Fair! Like both of those artists, Maxayn isn't afraid to use an electric guitar when she wants – which puts her music somewhere in the territory of groups like The Bar-Kays and Black Nasty, and the way they could blend rock influences with funk and soul! No surprise, Maxayn's bandmates here include two members of Buddy Miles' group – who really help keep things deep – providing a massive foundation for the lady's incredible vocals. Sea LevelSea Level ... LP
Capricorn, 1977. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $3.99
A classic album from one of the coolest groups to emerge from the southern rock scene of the 70s – a combo who can be as tight and jazzy as The Crusaders one minute, then show off their down home roots the next! Sea Level have a sound that's impeccable throughout this self-titled set – almost a Macon, Georgia answer to the sound of Steely Dan in LA – and the set mixes instrumental tracks that have a jazzy fusion vibe with more straightforward tracks that hit the soul-inspired sound of southern rock in the years after the rise of Memphis and Muscle Shoals. The jazz cuts are the real charmers – tremendous stuff that we'd rank right up there with the best fusion of the period – and titles include "Rain In Spain", "Shake A Leg", "Grand Larceny", "Scarborough Fair", "Just A Good Feeling", "Tidal Wave", and "Nothing Matters But The Fever". ✨✧ Billy Joe ShaverHonky Tonk Heroes (When I Get My Wings/Gypsy Boy/bonus tracks) ... CD
Capricorn/Bear Family (Germany), Mid 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
You've heard plenty about Billy Joe Shaver over the years, and this is the place to start – a set that brings together two of his albums for Capricorn Records, plus a single for MGM too! First up is When I Get Wings – a fantastic early album from Billy Joe Shaver – the kind of set that came out a bit under the wire, but turned on an elite few to one of the greatest songwriters in contemporary country music! The set's got maybe a bit more force than Billy's debut on Monument, but still also retains plenty of that broken-down quality that maybe didn't fit Shaver's age, but which definitely came through in the subjects of his songs – a similar voice to that of Kris Kristofferson on his early material, but definitely Billy Joe's own. Production is very strongly in the Capricorn Records mode, and titles include "Ride Me Down Easy", "Woman Is The Wonder Of The World", "Texas Uphere Tennessee", "The Good Lord Knows I've Tried", and "When I Get My wings". Gypsy Boy is a record with a title and cover that maybe look a bit off-key for the legend of Billy Joe Shaver – but the sound within is prime material from the 70s country genius, all given a tight spin in the Capricorn Records blend of rock and twang, roots, and polish! Billy Joe is maybe echoing some of the country music changes he helped to usher in with his songs a few years before – but the set is still great proof that the originator did them better than anyone else – as you'll hear on tunes that include "Chicken On The Ground", "Honky Tonk Heroes", "Billy B Damned", "We Stayed Too Long At The Fair", "Silver Wings Of Time", and "Slow Rollin Low". CD also features the obscure single tracks "Lately I've Been Leaning Towards The Blues", "I Couldn't Be Me Without You", and "Music City USA". CD

Cannonball AdderleySoul Zodiac ... LP
Capitol, 1972. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $34.99
One of the coolest, baddest, funkiest albums Cannonball Adderley ever recorded – a massive suite of tunes based on the signs of the Zodiac, produced to perfection by David Axelrod, and featuring some hip recitations from the mighty Rick Holmes! The double-length set is completely compelling all the way through – a darkly brooding batch of funky jazz that shows a strong Miles Davis electric influence at points, thanks to Nat Adderley's spacey trumpet lines, Mike Deasy's trippy guitar, and George Duke's excellent keyboards! Other tracks are a bit more laidback, fitting the mood of their respective signs – and overall, the whole thing slips and slides wonderfully from cut to cut – taking you through the star signs with a really righteous, soulful approach. Titles include "Cancer", "Sagittarius", "Pisces", "Aquarius", "Capricorn", "Virgo", "Taurus", "Aries", "Libra", and a special "Introduction". LP, Vinyl record album

Columbia, 1967. New Copy ... $4.99 6.99
A much different album than you might expect from the cover – hardly the funky 70s set implied by the Big Fun-styled cover – and instead a lost slice of work from his groundbreaking late 60s years! The set was recorded in 1967, but unissued until Miles late 70s time away from the studio – hence the cover, which attempts to contemporanize the record – and the music is very much in the dark moods and sharp tones of Filles De Kilimanjaro, and features a somewhat similar group! The core quintet of Wayne Shorter on tenor, Herbie Hancock on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Tony Williams on drums handles the first half of the set – but the group's then expanded to include Chick Corea on electric piano along with Herbie on keys – and Ron Carter steps out so that Dave Holland can bring some more modern tones to the bass. Tracks are all somewhat long, and titles include "Capricorn", "Water Babies", "Sweet Pea", and "Two Faced". CD

Killer keyboards from the legendary George Duke – and one of his most righteous albums for the MPS label! The album's a spectacular set that showcases both sides of Duke's genius at the time – his spacey, soulful approach to a laidback tune – and his more jamming styles on the harder cuts! Instrumentation is somewhat spare – just keyboards and piano from George, who also sings a bit – plus Ndugu Chancler on drums and John Heard on bass – both playing with a freely creative energy that's definitely motivated by Duke. There's a beautiful mix of electricity and acoustic warmth on the set – never too forced, and clearly an inspiration for countless players in years to come – maybe even more so than Herbie Hancock's work of the time. Drums are great too – and snap tightly for plenty of nice breaks on the set – which are in turn augmented by mellower keys from Duke, who also sings with a sweetly electric soul style. Liberty/Universal (Japan), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... About December 11, 2019
A great bit of fusion from the start of the 70s – kind of a bridge between the late 60s "groovy" Japanese jazz, and some of the freer-thinking work to come! The group features excellent tenor from Takeru Muraoka, who plays with kind of a sharp edge that almost echoes more of the alto and soprano work of the generation – mixed with keyboards from Hiromasa Suzuki – who's plenty great on electric piano! Hiroshi Suzuki plays trombone, and the set's got some nice funky drums from Akira Ishikawa – who's always a treat. Overall, the set often has some of the same funky characteristics as some of the best late 60s electric jazz sets on Liberty Records in the US – on titles that include "Capricorn", "Something", "On A Sunny Day", "Some Other Night", and "Peaceful Planet". A groovy set of spacey hip hop and jazzy instrumentals from J Rawls & Co – a very much welcome sequel to the Liquid Crystal Project! This time out the sound even more focused on the live band elements that fleshed out the first album, with ever soaring keys and sax in the mix – and J Rawls' beatcraft at its brightest, tightest, and most cosmic! Rawls has been of the most creative and most slept on beatmakers for years – at his best he's matched Dilla in the soul jazz keys & funky beats department – and Liquid Crystal brings even more fusion funk jazz elements into his sound. All instrumentals, with tribute tracks to classic hip hop crews, and groovy, spacey soul jazz sounds all the way. Like some of the best on those, the approach here is a mixture of rock and roots, served up with plenty of soul – recorded down in Tennessee with some great help from Charlie McCoy – whose harmonic and strong basslines really help shape the sound of the record, and who also produced the whole thing too. There's a few currents of psych around the edges, and the mixture of the two singers is great – on titles that include "Violence Blam Blam I'm Sorry", "Lesson At The Delicatessen", "Motorcycle", "One More Try", "I'm Comin Home Again", "Sleep", "Faith Has Been Given", and "Animal". One of the first moments of genius from a young Pharoah Sanders – a set that builds on the energy of John Coltrane's Love Supreme generation – but takes it in a much more expansive direction! The album's got a sense of majesty that's years ahead of its time – righteous, positive, spiritual jazz that flows out with a timeless power, and a quality that almost out-Coltrane's Coltrane! All tracks are long, expressive, and freely flowing – building with a very organic sense of energy – totally free from any gimmicks or cliche. Players include Dave Burrell on piano, Henry Grimes on bass, and Sonny Sharrock on guitar – and Pharoah plays alto, tenor, and piccolo – and even vocalizes a bit. The album begins with the amazing "Upper & Lower Egypt" – which is a perfect illustration of the two sides of Pharoah's genius – free/out & spiritual/modal – and other titles include "Japan", and "Capricorn Rising". A bit of a hint of the 70's work by Shorter – as he plays here with a slightly larger group, and a bit of an electric sound. Sonny Sharrock and John McLaughlin play guitar, Airto plays percussion, and Maria Booker sings vocals on a rendition of "Dindi" – and this complicted larger group gives Shorter a quite different sound than some of his earlier Blue Note quartet and quintet sides. The session's got a great spiritual soul jazz undercurrent – pointing the way towards aspects of jazz in the 70s – and titles include "Super Nova", "Swee Pea", "Water Babies", and "Capricorn". Irma ThomasIn Between Tears (180 gram pressing – with bonus tracks) ... LP
Fungus/Trading Places (UK), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99
An overlooked gem from Irma Thomas – and one of her deepest soul albums ever! The set was recorded with Swamp Dogg at the production helm, and he gives Irma this wonderfully rootsy feel throughout the record – the kind of vibe she definitely never got in the 60s, and a sound that seems to unlock even richer tones from her wonderful vocals! And although Swamp's in charge, the record's definitely Irma's own, too – as there's none of the usual Dogg-heavy cliches that might get in the way of the vocals, and instead Swamp is supremely respectful of everything Irma has to offer – and really helps her focus on her best strengths. The set was recorded at Capricorn Studios in Macon, with Duane Allman guitar on a few cuts – and titles include "She'll Never Be Your Wife", "What's So Wrong With You Loving Me", "Coming From Behind", "Turn My World Around", "These Four Walls", and "You're The Dog". LP features four bonus tracks – "Save A Little Bit For Me", "We Won't Be In Your Way Anymore", "That's How I Feel About You", and "I'd Do It All Over You". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Joao DonatoBluchanga ... CD
Mills (Brazil), 2017. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really beautiful record from the legendary Joao Donato – a killer jazz session, originally done as a private release for a Brazilian corporation, and never circulated widely at the time! The set's from Donato's more recent years, but it's got the sparkle and soul of some of his earlier jazz-based projects – with rhythms that push past basic bossa, into the more complicated timings and phrasings of Donato's 70s years – with almost a Moacir Santos sense of arrangements to the small group instrumentation! Donato plays acoustic piano, and the group includes Luiz Alves on bass, Robertino Silva on drums, Ricardo Pontes on flute and alto, Leo Amuedo on guitar, and Jose Arimatea on flugelhorn. The sense of color here is brilliant – that mix of modernism and down-to-earth appeal that always made Donato one of the standouts of his generation – and titles include "Lua Dourada", "Uma Bencao", "Nao Tem Nada Nao", "Malandor", "Capricorn", "Rio Branca", "Uma Para O Duke", and a great version of the Clare Fischer tune "Morning". ✨✧ Dennis CoffeyBig City Funk – Original Old School Breaks & Heavy Guitar Soul ... CD
Sussex/Vampi Soul (Spain), Early 70s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Mad funk from one of the heaviest cats on the early 70s Detroit scene – guitar legend Dennis Coffey, finally given his due in a long-overdue collection of his best grooves for Sussex Records! Coffey's guitar has a sound that's been sampled countless times over the past 20 years – a raspy way of laying over a groove that's unlike anything else you'll ever hear – ringing out with a multi-tracked style that almost sounds like a mini-guitar section in itself! But even over and above the great guitar work, the rhythms here are equally great – the kinds of breaks the first broke big back in the old school, and which have continued to fill the crates for many years to come! Essential tracks all the way through – with a tremendous set list that includes "Son Of Scorpio", "Scorpio", "Taurus", "Theme From Enter The Dragon", "Chicano", "Lonely Moon Child", "Impressions Of", "Ride Sally Ride", "Getting It On", "Big City Funk", "Garden Of The Moon", "Whole Lot Of Love", "Capricorn's Thing", and "Guitar Big Band". CD features the bonus track "Outrageous". CD

✨✧ Steve KhanPublic Access/Headline/Crossings ... CD
GRP/BGO (UK), Late 80s/Early 90s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A trio of later albums from a guitarist who first rose to fame in the 70s! First up is Public Access – a record that's got a slightly goofy cover, but a sound that's much richer than you might expect – thanks in part to great work on the album from percussionist Manolo Badrena! Some of the music here echoes the earlier fusion of guitarist Steve Khan – but other tunes bring in some warmer, Brazilian-y elements – including a bit of vocalization from Badrena, with occasional chorus work from Lani Groves and Vivian Cherry. The rest of the group features frequent partner Anthony Jackson on bass and Dave Weckl on drums – and titles include "Sise", "Silent Screen", "Mambosa", "Butane Elvin", "Botero People, and "Kamarica". The set then follows with three long tracks from Headline – a record that has guitarist Steve Khan almost returning to straight small combo work – although still with some of the wider colors of the fusion modes he first unleashed in the 70s! The album's got a tight core group here – Khan on guitar, Anthony Jackson on bass, Dennis Chambers on drums, and Manolo Badrena on percussion – and Chambers' drum performance is maybe more direct and swinging than some of Khan's previous drummers, which works especially well on the album's versions of songs by Joe Henderson and Ornette Coleman! Titles include "Caribbean Fire Dance", "All Or Nothing At All", and "Turnaround". Last up is Crossings – a great title for this set from guitarist Steve Khan – as the crossings here reflect Steve's increasing ear towards other cultures and rhythms in his music as the years moved on – even while still keeping things in a relatively fusion-based mode! Steve's got plenty of those warm colors that he always brought to his playing – working with a tight lineup that includes bassist Anthony Jackson, drummer Dennis Chambers, percussionist Manolo Badrena, and tenorist Michael Brecker. Titles include "Descarga Khanalonious", "Melancholee", "Inner Urge", "Capricorn", "What I'm Said", "Pee Wee", and "Think Of One". CD

✨✧ Patricia MarxNova ... CD
Canal (Brazil), 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
It's been quite awhile since we last heard from Patricia Marx – which is a real shame, as her soulful sounds earlier in the century were some of our favorite to come from Brazil! Despite the disappearance, Patricia hasn't dimmed her talents at all – and here, she works beautifully alongside co-producer Herbert Medeiros – who adds lots of warm keyboard lines to the record, really amping up the universal sense of soul that made Marx an international sensation on the Neo Soul circuit, and not just another contemporary artist from Brazil. Many of the songs have English lyrics, and titles include "Deixa Rolar", "You Showed Me How", "Supernova", "Saturn Capricorn Love Sex", "Luz Numa Lagrima", "La No Espaco", "Cathedral", and "Don't Break My Heart". ✨✧ Woody ShawStepping Stones – Live At The Village Vanguard ... LP
Columbia, 1978. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Soulful brilliance from Woody Shaw – a searing live set that matches the power of earlier classics like Moontrane and Blackstone Legacy! The album's got Woody working with a heck of a great group – Carter Jefferson on tenor and soprano sax, Onaje Allan Gumbs on piano, Clint Houston on bass, and Victor Lewis on drums – all of whom come together with just the right mix of earthy grooving and spiritual searching that puts Woody in his best light. Jefferson is especially great – as it's his soaring work on reeds that really give the album a sense of spirit – but credit should also be giving to the well-knit rhythm team, whose ability to push out in flowing lines of power really raises the energy of the performance. Titles include "Stepping Stone", "In A Capricornian Way", "Seventh Avenue", and "Theme For Maxine". LP, Vinyl record album
