Capricorn CollegeOrfeo 2000 ... LP
Kansas/Cinedelic (Italy), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $32.99 38.99
A gem of a record from the Italian prog scene of the early 70s – exactly the kind of well-crafted album that really set the scene apart from the rest! There's a real care with the instrumentation here – lots of piano, organ, and other keyboards from Mario Barigazzi, who also handles arrangements – music that moves with the sharpness of musicians skilled in other styles, but the kind of immediacy demanded by the prog underground of the time – often with an instrumental focus, but very different than jazz fusion too! Other players handle tenor, flute, guitar, and percussion – and there's a small bit of vocals as well, on titles that include "Particolare Amore", "Io Piu Te", "Orfeo 2000", "Anatomia Di Una Notte", "Why", and "Corri Corri Corri". Marion BrownCapricorn Moon To Juba Lee (Marion Brown Quartet/Juba-Lee) ... CD
Ezz-Thetics/Hat Hut (Switzerland), Mid 60s. New Copy ... $16.99
A CD that brings together some important early work from altoist Marion Brown – two long tracks from the sessions for his Quartet album on ESP – and a later album issued only overseas! The set begins with the long tracks "Capricorn Moon" and "Mephistopheles" from Marion Brown Quartet – one of our favorite albums ever on the legendary ESP label – a rhythmic, soulful, early session by Marion Brown – recorded before his own albums on Impulse, but with a similar feel to the best new thing sessions of that label at the time! The group is superb – with Benny Maupin on sax, Alan Shorter on trumpet, Rashied Ali on drums, and Ronnie Boykins on bass, often playing in tandem with Reggie Johnson – for a unique double-pulsing feel that makes for a nice rhythmic thrust. Next are the tracks "Juba Lee" and "Iditus", from the album Juba Lee – brilliant work from Marion Brown – one of his first albums, and a great set of tracks that have a fragile New York avant style – almost ESP, but not as raw, and with the kind of soulful emotion that's always made Brown's work stand out from the rest of his crowd. The group on the album is a septet, with Beaver Harris on drums, Dave Burrell on piano, Bennie Maupin on tenor, Alan Shorter on trumpet, and Grachan Moncour III on trombone. CD

✨✧ Esther PhillipsCapricorn Princess ... LP
Kudu, 1976. Near Mint- ... $9.99
A pretty amazing set from Esther Phillips – her final album for Kudu – and a beautiful mix of soaring soul sounds from one the most unique, emotionally-inflected soul vocalists of her era! Esther's in prime Kudu mode here – working with jazzy arrangements by David Matthews and Pee Wee Ellis, adding her unique, grit-inflected soul chanteuse vocals to a smoother mix of instrumentation that creates a perfect counterpoint that took her way past her earlier work! There's also a couple of really sweet disco skewed numbers that work incredibly well – with spacier bits of synth and a dancefloor soul bed of percussion and rhythms – and in general, the arrangements are pretty great from track-to-track! Players include Randy Brecker and Mike Brecker on trumpet and tenor sax, Bray Miles on synthesizer, Bobby Lyle on clavinet, Eric Gale on guitar, Joe Farrell on tenor sax and alto flute, percussionist Ralph MacDonald and other excellent name musicians and others bring a grand sweep and sweeter intimacy when the mood requires. Titles include "Magic's In The Air", "A Beautiful Friendship", "Boy I Really Tied One On", "Higher & Higher", and "All The Way Down". LP, Vinyl record album

A fantastic set from The Monkees – maybe the record that really had them coming together and finding that special groove that was all their own! Gregg AllmanLaid Back ... LP
Capricorn, 1973. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $19.99
Greg Allman's excellent solo debut – all the more impressive given that it came out just weeks apart from the Allman Brothers' classic Brothers & Sisters – here's a southern rock legend stepping out and showing different sides of his immense talent around the same time his band was also near a creative peak! Greg's uniquely expressive voice is in the spotlight here, on tunes that touch on laid back southern rock, but gospel blues & soul tinged, too, sans guitar heroics for the most part. Includes the eternally great "Midnight Rider", "Queen Of Hearts", "Please Call Home", "Don't Mess Up A Good Thing", a really cool country rock take on "These Days", "Multi-Colored Lady", "All My Friends" and certainly only of the fresher takes "Will The Circle Be Unbroken". Allman BrothersBrothers & Sisters ... LP
Capricorn, 1973. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $19.99 Just Sold Out!
The Allman Brothers at their best – and a key 70s set that may well have the group working at their peak! All their best southern roots are firmly tied together here – not just the country-touched approach to rock that was the group's calling card, but also their ties to some of the Georgia soul scene as well – an element that really surfaces in some of the album's piano lines and rhythms, which really help underscore the depth of the tunes – and give the group a solid footing that's stronger than some of their more cliched contemporaries. These tunes hold up wonderfully over the years – and have a visionary approach that almost sparkles even more strongly here in the 21st Century than when we first started digging their sounds on radio back in the 70s. Titles include "Southbound", "Jessica", "Pony Boy", "Wasted Words", "Ramblin Man", "Come & Go Blues", and "Jelly Jelly". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Sea LevelCats On The Coast ... LP
Capricorn, 1977. Near Mint- ... $3.99
Sweet smooth grooves from Sea Level – a killer crossover 70s group, one with roots in the Allman Brothers, but a sound that's much more wide-reaching overall! This sublime album is an AOR classic – a set that graced countless collections back in the day, thanks to a warm blend of rock and soul elements – all tied up in the kind of tight production you might guess from the cover! There's still some southern roots present in the music – especially on a few of the Allman-like guitar licks – but the overall approach is more cool and compressed, with a sweet 70s Cali sort of vibe, and some nice jazz undercurrents too. Titles include "Midnight Pass", "Cats On The Coast", "Song For Amy", "Had To Fall", "That's Your Secret", and "It Hurts To Want It So Bad". LP, Vinyl record album

The great second album from Sea Level – one of those records that loads of folks dug, back in the day – and not just the cats who remembered these guys for their work with The Allman Brothers! The set's got a tight blend of jazz, soul, and some crossover elements – almost rootsier mode of music melded with a Steely Dan/Crusaders sort of vibe – so that the fusion styles come together and really help the whole thing soar! Vocals often still echo the early years of the players, but the overall presentation has a much more LA vibe – despite the fact that the album was recorded at Capricorn Studios in Macon. Titles include "Electron Cold", "On The Wing", "A Lotta Colada", "Living In A Dream", and "King Grand". LP, Vinyl record album

BrethrenBrethren ... LP
Tiffany/Bonfire (Italy), Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99 29.99
A great bit of funky roots rock from Brethren – a group we only know from this one debut album, but who really knock it out of the park throughout! There's a quality here that would have been right at home on Capricorn Records, but Brethren are also maybe less tied to southern modes overall – as they work with a sharpness that follows some of that early 70s spirit of themes that had moved west to the coast, and gotten a bit more focus – and the instrumentation is superb throughout! Dr John plays keyboards on the record, but the group are really great themselves, especially on some of the more jamming moments. Our favorite track is the drum-heavy instrumental "Success Band Oil" – but the vocal cut "Outside Love" also has a great break at the beginning – and it's no surprise that the record was sampled by Lord Finesse and the Beatminerz. Other titles include "Don't Talk Now", "Everybody In The Congregation", "Just To Be There", "Hitchin To Memphis", and "Midnight Train". LP, Vinyl record album

Ian Carr with NucleusRoots (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Vertigo/Be With (UK), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99 34.99
A really fantastic album from trumpeter Ian Carr and his legendary Nucleus group – a combo who are really right on the money here, finding their own sort of space at a level that's very different than some of the other rock/jazz projects on the UK scene at the time! There's often a lot more space between the notes going on here than on more jamming, more progressive records – a laidback groove that's wonderfully soulful, and which ties this Nucleus set a bit more strongly to American jazz funk that was rising up at the time – or maybe like some of the better Euro work by groups like Cortex or Placebo! Ian Carr leads the group on trumpet, Dave MacRae plays a lot of great keyboards, and Brian Smith blows strong solos on tenor, soprano, and flute – on titles that include "Southern Roots & Celebration", "Capricorn", "Images", "Caliban", "Roots", and "Whapatiti". Sussex/Octave (Japan), 1972. New Copy ... $21.99 24.99 About July 20, 2022
Mad funk from Dennis Coffey – and the follow-up to his landmark Evolution album! It's interesting to note that Coffey's group is listed as the "Detroit Guitar Band" – which kind of foregrounds their link between the city's two strongest music sides of the late 60s: the hard heavy rock of groups like The Stooges and MC5, and the still-strong soul industry, of which Coffey was a seminal part. But note also that Coffey's the only guy playing guitar on the record, thanks to the magic of overdubs! The album features a funky follow-up to Coffey's earlier hit, called "Son Of Scorpio", plus plenty of other funky guitar numbers like "Capricorn's Thing", "Lonely Moon Child", "Twins Of Gemini", and "The Sagitarian". A deep deep deep collection of work from Arthur Conley – one that really shows the true spectrum of his mighty soul talents – and which goes way past his few overplayed hits of the 60s! The focus here is on slow-burners and mellow groovers – tunes that really bring out the depth of Conley's southern soul vocals – a richness that's right up there with his one-time mentor Otis Redding, recorded brilliantly at the legendary Fame studios! The label-spanning collection brings together material for the Atlantic, Fame, Jotis, Ru-Jac, and Capricorn labels – and has the usual top-shelf Ace Records presentation of detailed notes with vintage photos and label scans as well. Miles DavisWater Babies ... LP
Columbia, 1967. Very Good+ ... $34.99
A much different album than you might expect from the cover – hardly the funky 70s set implied by the Big Fun-styled cover – and instead a lost slice of work from his groundbreaking late 60s years! The set was recorded in 1967, but unissued until Miles late 70s time away from the studio – hence the cover, which attempts to contemporanize the record – and the music is very much in the dark moods and sharp tones of Filles De Kilimanjaro, and features a somewhat similar group! The core quintet of Wayne Shorter on tenor, Herbie Hancock on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Tony Williams on drums handles the first half of the set – but the group's then expanded to include Chick Corea on electric piano along with Herbie on keys – and Ron Carter steps out so that Dave Holland can bring some more modern tones to the bass. Tracks are all somewhat long, and titles include "Capricorn", "Water Babies", "Sweet Pea", and "Two Faced". LP, Vinyl record album

George DukeBest Of The MPS Years ... CD
MPS (Germany), Early 70s. New Copy ... $14.99 15.99 On June 17, 2022 (delayed)
Incredible work from keyboardist George Duke – a killer collection of his earliest recordings for the MPS label – all of them great! Although Duke's probably best known for his smoother, more soul-based sides for Columbia, he got his biggest start on the MPS label in the early 70s – working out a groove that was part jazz, part fusion, part funk, and part cosmic soul – wrapped up in keyboards, and often served up with a righteously tripped-out edge! The collection is a completely essential look at this period – the first bold flowering of genius, at a level that would hardly be matched again. George plays plenty of Fender Rhodes, mini moog, and Arp on these sides – and most numbers feature small combo instrumentation, which really helps keep a nice sort of edge. Titles include "Feel", "Capricorn", "Au Right", "Funny Funk", "The Opening", "That's What She Said", "Uncle Remus", "North Beach", "Foosh", "Love", "Cobra Jobege", "Someday", "Feels So Good", and "Love Reborn". Ego/Organic (Germany), Late 70s. New Copy 4 CDs ... $44.99 50.99
Four ultra-rare records – all brought together in one incredible CD set – the third collection to document the brilliant sounds of Germany's Ego Recordings label from the 70s! First up is the album Reconciliation from Joe Haider – one of the 70s gems on the mighty German Ego label – an incredible small company who seemed to put out nothing but excellent music! The set's led by pianist Joe Haider, and features a quintet with Andy Scherrer on tenor and soprano sax, Ack Van Rooyen on flugelhorn, Gunter Lenz on bass, and Todd Canedy on drums – all of them together welling up as way more than the sum of their parts, and cooking up an amazingly soulful set of tunes! There's bits of modal and American 70s spiritual soul jazz in the set – all played with a proud and buoyant style that unfolds majestically through the course of the album, never faltering in its vision or creativity. A under-acknowledged gem, with tracks that include "Mas De Serles", "Magdalena", "Reconciliation", "Crossover", and "Spanish Groove". Katzenvilla features the amazing trio of pianist Joe Haider, bassist Isla Eckinger, and drummer Pierre Favre – three very individual musicians who come together here as a group, but still retain a lot of their special energy! Haider's a lot more dynamic than usual – still with warm chords on the piano, but also some sharper edges – which seem pushed on by Favre's deft drum work, and his flowing sense of both melody and rhythm at the same moment. Eckinger's bass has these deep, soulful currents that we always love – and really grounds the whole thing in a wonderful way – on titles that include "Capricorn", "My Little Darling", "And Now", "Katzenvilla", and "Fate Of A Child" – all originals by Haider! Pianist Fritz Pauer steps out on Water Plants – a trio date that's got a lot more warmth and soul than some of the musician's previous work from the German scene – a beautiful little session that balances the deep bass work of Isla Eckinger and the subtle drums of Billy Brooks. There's a loose, lyrical vibe to the record that shows a side of Pauer we might not have expected – and Fritz wrote some wonderful tunes for the album, including "Water Plants", "Sagittarius", "Tribal Dance", "For La Rives", and "Autumn Evening". Last up is One For Wilton – one of the hippest later albums from pianist Horace Parlan – a set recorded with the saxophonist Wilton Gaynair, who'd contributed heavily to the UK scene in the late 50s/early 60s, then made great waves in Germany during the 70s! The set features Wilton on tenor and soprano sax, Parlan on piano, and great rhythms from Isla Eckinger on bass and Billie Brooks on drums – all coming together with a sense of warmth and imagination that's completely sublime – much richer than some of Gaynair's other performances from the 70s, and with a sense of flow and soul that makes the album one of Parlan's best. Titles include "Billie's Bossa", "One For Wilton", "Shade", "Firm Roots", and "Pananika". All albums come in tiny LP-style covers, and the box also features a bookle of notes! CD

✨✧ JamiroquaiSynkronized ... CD
Work/Sony, 1999. Used ... $3.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Magical work from Jamiroquai – one of those groups that never fails to please our ears, no matter how globally overplayed they get in clothing stores! This one follows nicely on the style of Traveling Without Moving – very full-on in its production style, yet still oozing with the group's classic soul influenced mode. The ghosts of Steely Dan, Stevie Wonder, and Lennie Kravitz all populate the set – stepping along with other more obscure 70s influences, amidst a nice blend of keys, beats, guitars, and strings! Titles include "Destitute Illusions", "Canned Heat", "Planet Home", "King For A Day", "Supersonic", "Soul Education", and "Black Capricorn Day". CD

✨✧ Pharoah SandersTauhid ... LP
Impulse, 1967. Very Good Gatefold ... $99.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the first moments of genius from a young Pharoah Sanders – a set that builds on the energy of John Coltrane's Love Supreme generation – but takes it in a much more expansive direction! The album's got a sense of majesty that's years ahead of its time – righteous, positive, spiritual jazz that flows out with a timeless power, and a quality that almost out-Coltrane's Coltrane! All tracks are long, expressive, and freely flowing – building with a very organic sense of energy – totally free from any gimmicks or cliche. Players include Dave Burrell on piano, Henry Grimes on bass, and Sonny Sharrock on guitar – and Pharoah plays alto, tenor, and piccolo – and even vocalizes a bit. The album begins with the amazing "Upper & Lower Egypt" – which is a perfect illustration of the two sides of Pharoah's genius – free/out & spiritual/modal – and other titles include "Japan", and "Capricorn Rising". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono orange and black label pressing with Van Gelder stamp. Cover has a small cutout hole, a light stain at the bottom of the spine inside the gatefold, and some gloss separation at the spine.)

✨✧ Wayne ShorterSuper Nova ... LP
Blue Note, 1969. Very Good+ ... $29.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A bit of a hint of the 70's work by Shorter – as he plays here with a slightly larger group, and a bit of an electric sound. Sonny Sharrock and John McLaughlin play guitar, Airto plays percussion, and Maria Booker sings vocals on a rendition of "Dindi" – and this complicted larger group gives Shorter a quite different sound than some of his earlier Blue Note quartet and quintet sides. The session's got a great spiritual soul jazz undercurrent – pointing the way towards aspects of jazz in the 70s – and titles include "Super Nova", "Swee Pea", "Water Babies", and "Capricorn". LP, Vinyl record album
(Liberty/UA pressing. NOTE – Cover has a light stain along the opening, with some peeling and flaking in front.)

✨✧ Sun TreaderZin Zin ... LP
Island (UK), 1973. Near Mint- ... $24.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great bit of drawn-out fusion – played by a British trio that features electric keyboards, bass, and percussion! The tracks have a jamming jazz-rock aproach – but never get too overindulgent, and never fall into the traps of some of the other British groups of the time. Instead, the groove is pure – with some nice dropped-out moments that have the keyboards working on lines that sound like they might have been lifted off of one of Sonny Fortune's great mid-70s albums. All tracks are long, and titles include "Stardance", "Orinoco", and "From The Region Of Capricorn". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has light wear and a small drip stain.)

✨✧ Bastards Of SoulSpinnin (with bonus download) ... LP
Eastwood Music Group, 2019. New Copy ... $19.99 20.00 Out Of Stock
A really special sort of record from the Bastards Of Soul – a Texas group, but one who work in this great mix of deep soul and slight southern rock touches – at a level that almost makes this album feel like some lost nugget from the vaults of Capricorn Records! Vocals are by male singer Chadwick Murray – not the lovely lady on the cover – and there's a cool crossover vibe here that takes us back to work by 70s genius talents like Eddie Hinton or Dan Penn, with guitar lines that are strong, but balanced by these warmer organ currents that really underscore the more soulful elements in the music – as do the laidback rhythms on the tunes. Titles include "I've Got The Key", "Funky Ham & Eggs", "Back To The City", "Spinning Out Of Control", "The Way It Should Be", "The Waiting Time", and "Your Love Has Turned My Heart To Bitterness". ✨✧ Barney WilenZodiac ... LP
Vogue/We Are Busy Bodies (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy (reissue)... $25.99 26.99
One of the coolest albums ever from French saxophonist Barney Wilen – a set that's legendary not only for its famous cover image, but for all the wonderful music underneath! The record's maybe the strongest to deliver on the modern promise that Wilen exhibited in his music during the 60s – but also has a tightness that makes it quite different from some of his more loopy projects – a way of putting things together that's bold and modern, yet also wonderfully controlled as well! As you might guess from the title, the record's based around the twelve phases of the Zodiac – and each tune has a slightly different sense of energy – all delivered by Wilen on tenor, with Karl Berger on vibes and piano, JF Jenny Clark on bass, and Jacques Thollot on drums – all players who are reaching towards free jazz modes, but often hang slightly inside, which makes for a beautiful balance overall. Titles include "Cancer", "Lion", "Vierge", "Capricorne", "Balance", "Scorpion", and "Poissons". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousSpeedball Experience – Obscure Pop Jazz From Early 70's Italian Music Library ... CD
Giaguaro/Fifth Dimension (Germany), 1970s. New Copy ... $5.99 16.99 Out Of Stock
One of the first collections to offer up the sorts of rare gems that have made Italian sound library records so worth digging for over the years – initially a 90s package, done before there was much information provided on the studios and players, and with the kind of porno cover that was initially used to sell grooves like this to the wider global scene of funk collectors! Forget the package, though, because the cuts are what matter most – an assortment of different funky numbers that are heavy on tight drums, funky basslines, and sweet keyboards – from mysterious sound library creators who include Sandro Brugnolini, Franco Bixio, Stefano Torossi, Raskovich, and Narassa. Titles include "Polyphony", "Diamonds", "Abiente Elegante", "La Gang", "Diatomea", "Capricorno", "Sweet Beat", and "Schizzo". CD
