✨✧ Marion BrownCapricorn Moon To Juba Lee (Marion Brown Quartet/Juba-Lee) ... CD
Ezz-Thetics/Hat Hut (Switzerland), Mid 60s. New Copy ... $16.99
A CD that brings together some important early work from altoist Marion Brown – two long tracks from the sessions for his Quartet album on ESP – and a later album issued only overseas! The set begins with the long tracks "Capricorn Moon" and "Mephistopheles" from Marion Brown Quartet – one of our favorite albums ever on the legendary ESP label – a rhythmic, soulful, early session by Marion Brown – recorded before his own albums on Impulse, but with a similar feel to the best new thing sessions of that label at the time! The group is superb – with Benny Maupin on sax, Alan Shorter on trumpet, Rashied Ali on drums, and Ronnie Boykins on bass, often playing in tandem with Reggie Johnson – for a unique double-pulsing feel that makes for a nice rhythmic thrust. Next are the tracks "Juba Lee" and "Iditus", from the album Juba Lee – brilliant work from Marion Brown – one of his first albums, and a great set of tracks that have a fragile New York avant style – almost ESP, but not as raw, and with the kind of soulful emotion that's always made Brown's work stand out from the rest of his crowd. The group on the album is a septet, with Beaver Harris on drums, Dave Burrell on piano, Bennie Maupin on tenor, Alan Shorter on trumpet, and Grachan Moncour III on trombone. CD

Jerry GoldsmithCapricorn One ... LP
Warner, 1978. Very Good+ ... $7.99
A bold score for a famous 70s astronaut film – penned by Jerry Goldsmith with almost the same sort of drama he might bring to a war thriller! The story itself is pretty dark – as the astronauts don't make it to space, but are forced into a Air Force base – and Goldsmith's music really follows suit – a really dominating set of orchestrations, with turgid rhythms at the bottom, blaring horn parts on the top, and offbeat instrumental phrases that sort of cascade down, almost in a claustrophobic way. There's less of the funkier or groovier moments you might know from earlier Goldsmith scores, but the soundtrack's still a great one, with a surprising amount of power, even away from the film. Titles include "Break Out", "The Message", "No Water", "Bedtime Story", "The Snake", "Kay's Theme", "The Letter", and "The Celebration". LP, Vinyl record album

Capricorn, 1972. Used ... $5.99
A surprisingly great batch of kick ass rock and roll tunes – southern fried, but done with a cosmic undercurrent that makes for a mighty weird approach! The drums are amazing – fierce right from the get-go, in a way that has made the record a favorite with break collectors for years – and the fuzzy guitars really step out strongly too – with just a slight southern twang, and a great edge that keeps things pretty funky at parts! Bobby Caldwell is in the group on percussion, piano, vibes, and bells – and he also co-wrote most of the songs on the album – and titles include the classic "Dancing Madly Backwards", plus "Myopic Void", "Frozen Over", "Thousand Days Of Yesterdays", "As The Moon Speaks", and "Astral Lady". Eddie HintonVery Extremely Dangerous ... CD
Capricorn/Reel Music, 1978. Used ... $6.99
A really great set of later southern soul from Eddie Hinton – recorded at Muscle Shoals with a nice 70s take on the classic 60s style of the genre – with powerful vocals from Hinton! The record's surprisingly rootsy for the time – and Eddie sings in a wonderful mode that has plenty of traces of Otis Redding and James Carr. The production has a modern touch, but never in a way that smooths out the real gritty soulfulness – and on these numbers, the album isn't out of step with some of the nice mid 70s work of Arthur Alexander or Paul Kelly. A genuine gem! Titles include "Get Off In It", "I Got The Feeling", "You Got Me Singing", "Yeah Man", Shout Bamalama", "Brand New Man", and "Shoot The Moon". CD

Johnny JenkinsTon-Ton Macoute! ... CD
Capricorn, 1970. Used ... $12.99
An excellent bit of raw funky southern soul from Johnny Jenkins – recorded in Macon, GA, and one of the last relics of the relations that Atlantic Records had with all of the little local scenes in the south! Ton-Ton Macoute is one of those records that manages to blend funk, blues, southern rock and soul way, way better than so many pretenders from the time – just a damn near perfectly realized set! Johnny Jenkins sings, stomps, plays guitar and blows harp (with some extra help from Duane Allman on the guitars), and he runs through tracks like "Blind Bats & Swamp Rats", "Sick & Tired", "Voodoo In You", "Rollin' Stone", "Bad News", "Down Along The Cove", and the absolute classic, classic breakbeat track "I Walk On Guilded Splinters". CD comes with 2 previously unreleased tracks – "I Don't Want No Woman" and "My Love Will Never Die". CD

Capricorn/Vampi Soul (Spain), 1972. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $13.99
The debut album from Maxayn – a funky female talent who deserves to be mentioned in the same territory as Betty Davis and Yvonne Fair! Like both of those artists, Maxayn isn't afraid to use an electric guitar when she wants – which puts her music somewhere in the territory of groups like The Bar-Kays and Black Nasty, and the way they could blend rock influences with funk and soul! No surprise, Maxayn's bandmates here include two members of Buddy Miles' group – who really help keep things deep – providing a massive foundation for the lady's incredible vocals. Titles include covers of the Stones' "You Can't Always Get What You Want" and "Gimme Shelter" – plus the original tunes "Trying For Days", "Jam For Jack", "Song", and "Doing Nothing Nothing Doing". Very much in the "Fifth Of Beethoven" mode – as a host of themes from classical composers get the Philly Disco treatment. Despite the title, though, the record was actually recorded in Europe, and really only earns its Philly tag through an adherence to a Sigma Sound style of production. Capricorn, 1973. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Greg Allman's excellent solo debut – all the more impressive given that it came out just weeks apart from the Allman Brothers' classic Brothers & Sisters – here's a southern rock legend stepping out and showing different sides of his immense talent around the same time his band was also near a creative peak! Greg's uniquely expressive voice is in the spotlight here, on tunes that touch on laid back southern rock, but gospel blues & soul tinged, too, sans guitar heroics for the most part. Includes the eternally great "Midnight Rider", "Queen Of Hearts", "Please Call Home", "Don't Mess Up A Good Thing", a really cool country rock take on "These Days", "Multi-Colored Lady", "All My Friends" and certainly only of the fresher takes "Will The Circle Be Unbroken". ✨✧ Allman BrothersBrothers & Sisters ... LP
Capricorn, 1973. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The Allman Brothers at their best – and a key 70s set that may well have the group working at their peak! All their best southern roots are firmly tied together here – not just the country-touched approach to rock that was the group's calling card, but also their ties to some of the Georgia soul scene as well – an element that really surfaces in some of the album's piano lines and rhythms, which really help underscore the depth of the tunes – and give the group a solid footing that's stronger than some of their more cliched contemporaries. These tunes hold up wonderfully over the years – and have a visionary approach that almost sparkles even more strongly here in the 21st Century than when we first started digging their sounds on radio back in the 70s. Titles include "Southbound", "Jessica", "Pony Boy", "Wasted Words", "Ramblin Man", "Come & Go Blues", and "Jelly Jelly". LP, Vinyl record album

Livingston Taylor's not hiding his relation to brother James Taylor here – at least not in his style, which is strongly Taylor-like, but not nearly as filled with cliche! The songs are short, simple, and nicely personal – a bit folksy at moments, and at their best when sung with some jazzier phrasing on acoustic guitar. Kent (UK), 1960s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
A deep deep deep collection of work from Arthur Conley – one that really shows the true spectrum of his mighty soul talents – and which goes way past his few overplayed hits of the 60s! The focus here is on slow-burners and mellow groovers – tunes that really bring out the depth of Conley's southern soul vocals – a richness that's right up there with his one-time mentor Otis Redding, recorded brilliantly at the legendary Fame studios! The label-spanning collection brings together material for the Atlantic, Fame, Jotis, Ru-Jac, and Capricorn labels – and has the usual top-shelf Ace Records presentation of detailed notes with vintage photos and label scans as well. Titles include "Let's Go Steady", "God Bless", "Nobody's Fault But Mine", "There's A Place For Us", "Take Me", "Where You Lead Me", "Stop Knocking", "I Want Your Love", "Otis Sleep On", "Put Our Love Together", "Let Nothing Separate", and "Walking On Eggs". Larry CoryellEuropean Impressions ... LP
Novus, 1978. Very Good ... $3.99
Larry Coryell began his career as a fuzzy fusion monster – often leaning into rock with both his sound and his solos – but over the 70s, he also really developed his talents as an acoustic artist – which come into beautiful focus here on a set of mostly solo recordings! Larry almost seems to channel previous acoustic giants – like Baden Powell or Paco DeLucia – but all while making a sound that's completely his own – quite rhythmic in its pulse, with some very hard action on the strings – but also with a level of sensitivity that you never would have heard in his music a decade before! The album's got a fantastic blending of the Horace Silver tunes "Song For My Father" and "Sister Sadie" – and other tracks include "Toronto Under The Sign Of Capricorn", "April Seventh", "Copenhagen Impressions", and "For Phillip & Django". Miles DavisWater Babies ... CD
Columbia, 1967. New Copy ... $4.99 6.99
A much different album than you might expect from the cover – hardly the funky 70s set implied by the Big Fun-styled cover – and instead a lost slice of work from his groundbreaking late 60s years! The set was recorded in 1967, but unissued until Miles late 70s time away from the studio – hence the cover, which attempts to contemporanize the record – and the music is very much in the dark moods and sharp tones of Filles De Kilimanjaro, and features a somewhat similar group! The core quintet of Wayne Shorter on tenor, Herbie Hancock on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Tony Williams on drums handles the first half of the set – but the group's then expanded to include Chick Corea on electric piano along with Herbie on keys – and Ron Carter steps out so that Dave Holland can bring some more modern tones to the bass. Tracks are all somewhat long, and titles include "Capricorn", "Water Babies", "Sweet Pea", and "Two Faced". CD

George DukeFaces In Reflection ... LP
MPS, 1974. Very Good+ ... $19.99
Killer keyboards from the legendary George Duke – and one of his most righteous albums for the MPS label! The album's a spectacular set that showcases both sides of Duke's genius at the time – his spacey, soulful approach to a laidback tune – and his more jamming styles on the harder cuts! Instrumentation is somewhat spare – just keyboards and piano from George, who also sings a bit – plus Ndugu Chancler on drums and John Heard on bass – both playing with a freely creative energy that's definitely motivated by Duke. There's a beautiful mix of electricity and acoustic warmth on the set – never too forced, and clearly an inspiration for countless players in years to come – maybe even more so than Herbie Hancock's work of the time. Drums are great too – and snap tightly for plenty of nice breaks on the set – which are in turn augmented by mellower keys from Duke, who also sings with a sweetly electric soul style. Titles include "Capricorn", "The Opening", "Psychosomatic Dung", "North Beach", "Faces In Reflection", "Maria Tres Filhos", and "Da Somba". LP, Vinyl record album

Liberty/Universal (Japan), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $54.99
A great bit of fusion from the start of the 70s – kind of a bridge between the late 60s "groovy" Japanese jazz, and some of the freer-thinking work to come! The group features excellent tenor from Takeru Muraoka, who plays with kind of a sharp edge that almost echoes more of the alto and soprano work of the generation – mixed with keyboards from Hiromasa Suzuki – who's plenty great on electric piano! Hiroshi Suzuki plays trombone, and the set's got some nice funky drums from Akira Ishikawa – who's always a treat. Overall, the set often has some of the same funky characteristics as some of the best late 60s electric jazz sets on Liberty Records in the US – on titles that include "Capricorn", "Something", "On A Sunny Day", "Some Other Night", and "Peaceful Planet". Canyon/Alive, 1970. New Copy ... On October 24, 2020
One of the earliest albums ever from Swamp Dogg – and one of the best as well! The set was cut down at Capricorn Studios in Macon, and has a wicked blend of southern funk and deep soul that Swamp never hit this well ever again – a quality that almost makes us think the album was more of a serious effort than some of his later recordings – which always seemed to hide the real soul depth of Jerry Williams beneath some tongue in cheek elements. Not so here, though – as the record has a straight ahead deep soul quality that features Swamp's vocals crackling with the best of his contemporaries – and belting out some wickeder messages on the album's funkier tunes. Mr Dogg supervised the whole thing – from conception to production to performance – and titles include "Total Destruction To Your Mind", "I Was Born Blue", "Redneck", "Synthetic World", "Dust Your Head Color Ed", and "The Baby Is Mine". Killer work from the same sessions that gave the world Cannonball Adderley's classic Black Messiah album – live material from an extended stretch as the Troubadour club in LA – featuring a very righteous, freewheeling version of Cannonball's group! The lineup features some wonderful work on Fender Rhodes from George Duke – who brings a more soulful, spiritual current to the proceedings than Joe Zawinul did in earlier years – a really commanding presence that hints at his brewing solo fame, and which is a very welcome addition to the core lineup, which also includes Cannon on soprano and alto, and brother Nat on cornet! The performance also fetaures some great guest work from Ernie Watts on tenor and Airto on percussion – who really help round out the long tunes on the set. David Axelrod produced – leaving some nice room for Adderley's key spoken bits – and titles include the 12 minute groover "The Brakes", plus "Oh Babe", "Music You All", and "Capricorn" – plus a sweet take on "Walk Tall", which really has Duke stomping away on the Rhodes! Vocals are by male singer Chadwick Murray – not the lovely lady on the cover – and there's a cool crossover vibe here that takes us back to work by 70s genius talents like Eddie Hinton or Dan Penn, with guitar lines that are strong, but balanced by these warmer organ currents that really underscore the more soulful elements in the music – as do the laidback rhythms on the tunes. A really beautiful record from the legendary Joao Donato – a killer jazz session, originally done as a private release for a Brazilian corporation, and never circulated widely at the time! The set's from Donato's more recent years, but it's got the sparkle and soul of some of his earlier jazz-based projects – with rhythms that push past basic bossa, into the more complicated timings and phrasings of Donato's 70s years – with almost a Moacir Santos sense of arrangements to the small group instrumentation! Donato plays acoustic piano, and the group includes Luiz Alves on bass, Robertino Silva on drums, Ricardo Pontes on flute and alto, Leo Amuedo on guitar, and Jose Arimatea on flugelhorn. The sense of color here is brilliant – that mix of modernism and down-to-earth appeal that always made Donato one of the standouts of his generation – and titles include "Lua Dourada", "Uma Bencao", "Nao Tem Nada Nao", "Malandor", "Capricorn", "Rio Branca", "Uma Para O Duke", and a great version of the Clare Fischer tune "Morning". Muse, 1973. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The legendary meeting of the two biggest Brazilian keyboard talents of the 70s – Joao Donato and Eumir Deodato – coming together in beautifully funky formation! The sound is a great blend of the moody electric work of Donato's classic Quem E Quem album, and some of the fuller, funkier grooves on Deodato's work for CTI – served up here in a double-keyboard blend with help from a host of great guest musicians! Other players include Randy Brecker on trumpet, Romeo Penque on flute, Mauricio Einhorn on harmonica, and Michael Gibson on guitar – plus plenty of percussion from Airto and Ray Barretto, who both join in to round out this all star session. Tracks are nicely long, and very jamming at times – and titles include the funky "Whistle Stop", plus "Where's JD", "Capricorn", "Nightripper", and "Batuque". LP, Vinyl record album
