✨✧ Sheila JordanComes Love – Lost Session 1960 ... CD
Capri, 1960. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic lost moment from vocalist Sheila Jordan – a set that was done a few years before her debut album in Blue Note, and which represents a rare look at this very early chapter in her career! By the 70s, Jordan had emerged as a true modernist in jazz – but here, she's maybe a bit more straight ahead – more in the moody, dark-tinged world of small combo vocals by singers like Chris Connor or Helen Carr – but already showing signs of that very distinct phrasing that would only flower more strongly over the next few years – a quality that really sets the record apart from more familiar material! The recordings were lost for years – found on an acetate in recent years with a Chatham Records listing next to the date – and titles include "Glad To Be Unhappy", "Ballad Of The Sad Young Men", "I'm The Girl", "Comes Love", "These Foolish Things", "They Can't Take That Away From Me", and "Don't Explain". Universal (France), 1960s. New Copy ... $9.99 14.98
A great collection of soundtrack work by Georges Delerue – featuring 6 tracks from Jean-Luc Godard's famous film Le Mepris (aka Contempt), plus tracks from the films Compte A Rebours, Heureux Qui Comme Ulysse, Cartouche, L'Insoumis, La Peau Douce, and L'Aine Des Ferchaux. Most of the work is in a strongly orchestral style – and even though the tracks are from diverse films, they're unified by a dark approach to the themes. Titles include "Lamento", "Capri", "Paul", "Camille", "Adultere", "Thomas Et Dominique", "Cartouche", "Final", and "Ulysse". 28 tracks in all – with notes in English and French! CD

Kendrick LamarDAMN. ... LP
Aftermath/Interscope, 2017. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $31.99 35.99
DAMN!, indeed – Kendrick has yet to take even a small step down from the creative peak he's been riding for years – and takes another daring step forward with this strong, strident, no-mess-taking classic in the making! The surprise-announced DAMN! finds him taking on timely concerns – some longtime inherent to everyday racial, social, and class struggles in American life, and others that are purely personal. The production is diverse to a degree, but a bit straight forward compared to the sprawling, years-in-the-making To Pimp A Butterfly – all by design, as DAMN! is clearly made to sound fresh and urgent right now. But like all great musical art, it's built to stand the test of time. Includes guest producers, musicians and vocalists as varied as Thundercat, U2, Kamasi Washington, Kid Capri and Rihanna. Titles include "BLOOD.", "DNA.", "YAH.", "ELEMENT.", "LOYALTY." feat Rihanna, "PRIDE.", "LUST." with strings arranged by Kamasi Washington, "XXX." feat U2, "FEAR.", "GOD." and "DUCKWORTH." The production stands the test of time incredibly well, as does KRS's peak level precision on the mic. A gem of a 50s album from Frank – well-themed and swinging, with a batch of travel-related tunes that really groove nicely! Billy May handled the arrangements on this one, and he gives the record a nice jazzy finish that fits the globe-trotting tunes well – taking Frank around the world in a song, and returning him home peacefully by the end of the set. Titles include the great originals "Come Fly With Me" and "It's Nice To Go Traveling" – plus "Isle Of Capri", "Around The World", "April In Paris", and "Brazil". LP, Vinyl record album

Kansas/Cinedelic (Italy), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $32.99 38.99
A gem of a record from the Italian prog scene of the early 70s – exactly the kind of well-crafted album that really set the scene apart from the rest! There's a real care with the instrumentation here – lots of piano, organ, and other keyboards from Mario Barigazzi, who also handles arrangements – music that moves with the sharpness of musicians skilled in other styles, but the kind of immediacy demanded by the prog underground of the time – often with an instrumental focus, but very different than jazz fusion too! Other players handle tenor, flute, guitar, and percussion – and there's a small bit of vocals as well, on titles that include "Particolare Amore", "Io Piu Te", "Orfeo 2000", "Anatomia Di Una Notte", "Why", and "Corri Corri Corri". ✨✧ Marion BrownCapricorn Moon To Juba Lee (Marion Brown Quartet/Juba-Lee) ... CD
Ezz-Thetics/Hat Hut (Switzerland), Mid 60s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A CD that brings together some important early work from altoist Marion Brown – two long tracks from the sessions for his Quartet album on ESP – and a later album issued only overseas! The set begins with the long tracks "Capricorn Moon" and "Mephistopheles" from Marion Brown Quartet – one of our favorite albums ever on the legendary ESP label – a rhythmic, soulful, early session by Marion Brown – recorded before his own albums on Impulse, but with a similar feel to the best new thing sessions of that label at the time! The group is superb – with Benny Maupin on sax, Alan Shorter on trumpet, Rashied Ali on drums, and Ronnie Boykins on bass, often playing in tandem with Reggie Johnson – for a unique double-pulsing feel that makes for a nice rhythmic thrust. Next are the tracks "Juba Lee" and "Iditus", from the album Juba Lee – brilliant work from Marion Brown – one of his first albums, and a great set of tracks that have a fragile New York avant style – almost ESP, but not as raw, and with the kind of soulful emotion that's always made Brown's work stand out from the rest of his crowd. The group on the album is a septet, with Beaver Harris on drums, Dave Burrell on piano, Bennie Maupin on tenor, Alan Shorter on trumpet, and Grachan Moncour III on trombone. CD

✨✧ Esther PhillipsCapricorn Princess ... LP
Kudu, 1976. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
A pretty amazing set from Esther Phillips – her final album for Kudu – and a beautiful mix of soaring soul sounds from one the most unique, emotionally-inflected soul vocalists of her era! Esther's in prime Kudu mode here – working with jazzy arrangements by David Matthews and Pee Wee Ellis, adding her unique, grit-inflected soul chanteuse vocals to a smoother mix of instrumentation that creates a perfect counterpoint that took her way past her earlier work! There's also a couple of really sweet disco skewed numbers that work incredibly well – with spacier bits of synth and a dancefloor soul bed of percussion and rhythms – and in general, the arrangements are pretty great from track-to-track! Players include Randy Brecker and Mike Brecker on trumpet and tenor sax, Bray Miles on synthesizer, Bobby Lyle on clavinet, Eric Gale on guitar, Joe Farrell on tenor sax and alto flute, percussionist Ralph MacDonald and other excellent name musicians and others bring a grand sweep and sweeter intimacy when the mood requires. Titles include "Magic's In The Air", "A Beautiful Friendship", "Boy I Really Tied One On", "Higher & Higher", and "All The Way Down". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Allman BrothersBrothers & Sisters ... LP
Capricorn, 1973. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $24.99
The Allman Brothers at their best – and a key 70s set that may well have the group working at their peak! All their best southern roots are firmly tied together here – not just the country-touched approach to rock that was the group's calling card, but also their ties to some of the Georgia soul scene as well – an element that really surfaces in some of the album's piano lines and rhythms, which really help underscore the depth of the tunes – and give the group a solid footing that's stronger than some of their more cliched contemporaries. These tunes hold up wonderfully over the years – and have a visionary approach that almost sparkles even more strongly here in the 21st Century than when we first started digging their sounds on radio back in the 70s. Titles include "Southbound", "Jessica", "Pony Boy", "Wasted Words", "Ramblin Man", "Come & Go Blues", and "Jelly Jelly". LP, Vinyl record album

Capricorn/Universal (Japan), 1976. New Copy ... $13.99
Strongly soulful work from the great Bonnie Bramlett – the southern singer who's probably best-remembered for her early collaborations on Stax and Atlantic with Delaney, but who's every bit as great here on her own! The record is very soul-drenched through and through – most of the tracks are titles that hail from the 60s and 70s soul music songbook, but are reinterpreted here wonderfully by Bonnie – whose deep soul roots make her more than enough of a match to take on tunes like these! Backings are by the cream of the crop of Muscle Shoals – and the set features a number of duets – with Mickey Thomas, Dobie Gray, Gregg Allman, and Bobby Whitlock – on titles that include "You Send Me", "Never Gonna Give You Up", "Ain't That Lovin You Baby", "Let's Go Get Stoned", "Two Steps From The Blues", and "Think". 32 Jazz/Muse, 1973. Used ... Just Sold Out!
The legendary meeting of the two biggest Brazilian keyboard talents of the 70s – Joao Donato and Eumir Deodato – coming together in beautifully funky formation! The sound is a great blend of the moody electric work of Donato's classic Quem E Quem album, and some of the fuller, funkier grooves on Deodato's work for CTI – served up here in a double-keyboard blend with help from a host of great guest musicians! Other players include Randy Brecker on trumpet, Romeo Penque on flute, Mauricio Einhorn on harmonica, and Michael Gibson on guitar – plus plenty of percussion from Airto and Ray Barretto, who both join in to round out this all star session. Tracks are nicely long, and very jamming at times – and titles include the funky "Whistle Stop", plus "Where's JD", "Capricorn", "Nightripper", and "Batuque". CD

The full first sessions by Wynton Kelly as a leader – recorded for Blue Note records in 1951, and featuring a trio with Lee Abrams on drums and either Frank Skeete or Oscar Pettiford on bass. The tracks have a light, fluid feel that shows the depth of Kelly's work on the keys even at a young age – with some key influences from bop, but an overall sense of poise and style that was enough to challenge the bigger mainstream pianists of the time. The set comes with a nice booklet on Kelly's early years, and also features notes on all the sessions – a total of 19 tracks that include "Foolin Myself", "Blue Moon", "Fine & Dandy", "Where Or When", "Born To Be Blue", "Moonglow", "Opus Caprice", "I Found A New Baby", and "Do Nothing Till You Hear From Me". Ennio MorriconeCosa Avete Fatto A Solange? (180 gram yellow vinyl pressing) ... LP
Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $31.99
A beautiful illustration of the balance of light and darkness in the best work of Ennio Morricone – and an obscure soundtrack that dances between both sides of the spectrum! The main theme is incredibly sweet – one of those lightly drifting Morricone numbers that features wordless vocals from Edda Dell'Orso – but other tunes then go much deeper into the depths – hitting odd tones, moody instrumental passages, and somber rhythms that are then surprisingly offset by lighter numbers that are peppered throughout the score. The instrumentation includes a number of unusual twists that are not typical of Morricone at the time – and titles include "Cadenze", "Aleatorio", "Cosa Avete Fatto A Solange", "Raccapriccio", "Una Tromba E La Sua Notte", "Fine Di Solange", and "Sottinitesi". The rare lost legacy of the Music Makers Band – a funky group from Georgia who are best known under their previous incarnation as The Mighty Chevelles – who cut the superb Black Gold album the year before! The work here was never issued at the time, but represents some well-done sessions at the legendary Capricorn Studios – the group even sharper than before, and mixing in some clubby elements with their funk – but all without ever losing the edge that made them great in the first place! Kenny Dope remastered all the work here from the original multi-track masters – and each tune is presented in a well-crafted vocal version, and the set also features instrumentals, plus some extended mixes by Kenny as well. Capricorn, 1977. Sealed ... $6.99
Sweet smooth grooves from Sea Level – a killer crossover 70s group, one with roots in the Allman Brothers, but a sound that's much more wide-reaching overall! This sublime album is an AOR classic – a set that graced countless collections back in the day, thanks to a warm blend of rock and soul elements – all tied up in the kind of tight production you might guess from the cover! There's still some southern roots present in the music – especially on a few of the Allman-like guitar licks – but the overall approach is more cool and compressed, with a sweet 70s Cali sort of vibe, and some nice jazz undercurrents too. A beautiful bit of ambient work from Susumu Yokota – a set that seems to continue some of the spirit of the Japanese minimal scene of the 80s, but with some instrumentation and production that's a bit more contemporary – especially in the "crispy" way that some of the rhythms and samples come into the mix! Where some of Susumu's predecessors were pioneers in music like this, it's almost as if Yokota is here trying to bring forward all the other global elements that had been influenced by earlier Japanese electronic music – but took things into all their own directions – directions that are embraced here with a real sense of beauty and balance! Greg Allman's excellent solo debut – all the more impressive given that it came out just weeks apart from the Allman Brothers' classic Brothers & Sisters – here's a southern rock legend stepping out and showing different sides of his immense talent around the same time his band was also near a creative peak! Greg's uniquely expressive voice is in the spotlight here, on tunes that touch on laid back southern rock, but gospel blues & soul tinged, too, sans guitar heroics for the most part. Includes the eternally great "Midnight Rider", "Queen Of Hearts", "Please Call Home", "Don't Mess Up A Good Thing", a really cool country rock take on "These Days", "Multi-Colored Lady", "All My Friends" and certainly only of the fresher takes "Will The Circle Be Unbroken". Columbia/Legacy, 1962. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A pretty great little album – and very different than Gerry Mulligan's regular sides from the time! The session was originally produced as part of the sessions for the short-lived Jazztime label in the early 60s – and was produced by Dave Bailey with a soulful undercurrent that's quite similar to his own sessions from the period. Gerry's really shaking free of the "cool" cliches for the record – working with a deeply grooving rhythm section that includes Bailey on drums, Ben Tucker on bass, and Tommy Flanagan on piano – making a key return of piano to a Gerry Mulligan session! Alec Dorsey's also in the group on conga – adding a nice little extra kick to a few of the best tunes on the set – and Gerry himself is playing baritone with a style that's as fluid as on his freer-floating 50s recordings, but which also hits more of a rolling sort of tenor groove! Titles include "Get Out Of Town", "Blue Boy", "Capricious", "Here I'll Stay", and "Inside Impromptu". CD

The album's got Woody working with a heck of a great group – Carter Jefferson on tenor and soprano sax, Onaje Allan Gumbs on piano, Clint Houston on bass, and Victor Lewis on drums – all of whom come together with just the right mix of earthy grooving and spiritual searching that puts Woody in his best light. Jefferson is especially great – as it's his soaring work on reeds that really give the album a sense of spirit – but credit should also be giving to the well-knit rhythm team, whose ability to push out in flowing lines of power really raises the energy of the performance. Titles include "Stepping Stone", "In A Capricornian Way", "Seventh Avenue", and "Theme For Maxine". CD features 3 bonus tracks, 2 unissued – "Blues For Ball", "All Things Being Equal Are Not", and "Escape Velocity". CD

✨✧ Billy TaylorImpromptu ... LP
Mercury, 1962. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of Billy Taylor's greatest albums – far more than his usual easy-handed soul jazz, and much more of a modernist-informed outing, with one of the hippest groups to ever back Taylor on record! The rhythm's by Bob Cranshaw and Walter Perkins of the MJT+3 – and the group's augmented by guitarist Jim Hall, who's working here in a slightly less contemplative mode than his recordings with Art Farmer and Paul Desmond from the similar time, but who also adds a great deal of mood and color to the set. Titles are all Taylor originals – and tracks include "Impromptu", "Capricious", "Free & Oozy", "Paraphrase", and "Muffle Guffle". LP, Vinyl record album
(Stereo white label promo with deep groove. Cover looks great overall, with just a touch of light wear.)

✨✧ Paula Shocran/William Parker/Pablo DiazEl Templo ... CD
Astral Spirits, 2021. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The notes of this set have Matthew Shipp raving about the piano talents of Paula Shocran – and we can say that she not only has a sense of complexity and dexterity that maybe matches Shipp's work on the keys, but also works beautifully here with Matthew's frequent musical partner, bassist William Parker! The improvisations here are very loose and open – with each musician really retaining their own identity – not in challenge to the other, but as a way of establishing points of a triangle that are firm, and which allow for plenty of free play in between – qualities that drummer Pablo Diaz really brings to his work here too. All tracks are nice and long, and handled with a real sense of beauty – "Los Jardines", "Ausencia", "Capricornio", and "El Templo". CD

✨✧ VariousSpeedball Experience – Obscure Pop Jazz From Early 70's Italian Music Library ... CD
Giaguaro/Fifth Dimension (Germany), 1970s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the first collections to offer up the sorts of rare gems that have made Italian sound library records so worth digging for over the years – initially a 90s package, done before there was much information provided on the studios and players, and with the kind of porno cover that was initially used to sell grooves like this to the wider global scene of funk collectors! Forget the package, though, because the cuts are what matter most – an assortment of different funky numbers that are heavy on tight drums, funky basslines, and sweet keyboards – from mysterious sound library creators who include Sandro Brugnolini, Franco Bixio, Stefano Torossi, Raskovich, and Narassa. Titles include "Polyphony", "Diamonds", "Abiente Elegante", "La Gang", "Diatomea", "Capricorno", "Sweet Beat", and "Schizzo". CD

✨✧ Henk Badings & Dick RaaijmakersEvolutions, Contrasts, & Electronic Music ... LP
Fantome Phonographique (Italy), Mid 50s. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A treasure trove of early electronic music from these two Dutch giants of the field – both every bit as important as the more widely-circulated French artists of the musique concrete generation! Badings is featured here on a number of great tracks – including the sublime "Capriccio", which takes off on older violin sonata modes, by having a solo violin play next to two electronic tracks! "Genese" is even bolder, and uses five oscillators to create the tracks in three different movements! "Evolutions" is a ballet suite by Badings – short electronic pieces that point the way towards some of the dance experiments by Pierre Henry. Raaijmakers is featured in a number of shorter, more playful tracks – almost more along the lines of the 60s moog generation – with titles that include "Night Train Blue", "Song Of The Second Moon", "Contrasts", and "Colonel Bogey". ✨✧ Ian Carr with NucleusRoots (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Vertigo/Be With (UK), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A really fantastic album from trumpeter Ian Carr and his legendary Nucleus group – a combo who are really right on the money here, finding their own sort of space at a level that's very different than some of the other rock/jazz projects on the UK scene at the time! There's often a lot more space between the notes going on here than on more jamming, more progressive records – a laidback groove that's wonderfully soulful, and which ties this Nucleus set a bit more strongly to American jazz funk that was rising up at the time – or maybe like some of the better Euro work by groups like Cortex or Placebo! Ian Carr leads the group on trumpet, Dave MacRae plays a lot of great keyboards, and Brian Smith blows strong solos on tenor, soprano, and flute – on titles that include "Southern Roots & Celebration", "Capricorn", "Images", "Caliban", "Roots", and "Whapatiti". ✨✧ George DukeFaces In Reflection (180 gram pressing) ... LP
MPS (Germany), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Killer keyboards from the legendary George Duke – and one of his most righteous albums for the MPS label! The album's a spectacular set that showcases both sides of Duke's genius at the time – his spacey, soulful approach to a laidback tune – and his more jamming styles on the harder cuts! Instrumentation is somewhat spare – just keyboards and piano from George, who also sings a bit – plus Ndugu Chancler on drums and John Heard on bass – both playing with a freely creative energy that's definitely motivated by Duke. There's a beautiful mix of electricity and acoustic warmth on the set – never too forced, and clearly an inspiration for countless players in years to come – maybe even more so than Herbie Hancock's work of the time. Drums are great too – and snap tightly for plenty of nice breaks on the set – which are in turn augmented by mellower keys from Duke, who also sings with a sweetly electric soul style. Titles include "Capricorn", "The Opening", "Psychosomatic Dung", "North Beach", "Faces In Reflection", "Maria Tres Filhos", and "Da Somba". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Eddie GomezDown Stretch ... CD
Trio/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1976. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Bassist Eddie Gomez hardly ever has a down stretch – especially given all the creative combinations he's worked in over the years – and this rare 70s album from Japan is more of a high point than anything "down" at all! The record's a trio date, with killer work on Fender Rhodes and piano from Takehiro Honda – who's easily one of our favorite Japanese pianists of the time, and a musician who really brings a different sort of energy to the record than some of Gomez's other sessions with piano players, especially Bill Evans. Drummer Elliot Zigmund is also nicely creative, too – really working the kit in unusual ways, and often staying back a bit so that Eddie can get some wonderful space in the lead, especially at the start of some of the songs. The whole thing's great – an overlooked moment of genius from Gomez – and titles include "Caprice", "Half Life", "Blues E", "Dream Passage", and "Down Stretch". CD

✨✧ VariousCriminale Vol 3 – Colpo Gobbo (with bonus CD) ... LP
Flipper/Penny (Italy), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A funky variety of rare Italian Sound Library tunes from the Flipper Music vaults – running the gamut of the seedy soundtrack styles of the time – from pulpy psych, to rumbling funky percussion, to groovy mod organ jazz and well beyond! It's great stuff, clearly indicative of the seedy cinema sounds of 70s, but the music stands strongly as a groovy listening experience of its own – with some great material by renowned soundtrack maestros and less familiar names, too. 16 track in all: "Tangenziale Sud" by Gerardo Iacoucci & Mario Vinciguerra, "Rotatory Motion" by Franco Tamponi, "North Wind" by Alessandro Alessandroni, "Quadrante" by Stelio Subelli, "Carosello" by Leopoldo Perez-Bonsignore, "Chitarre Hippies" by Giovanni Ferroni, "Capricorno" by Amedeo Tommasi, "Piper Blues" by BrunoBattisti D'Amario and more. ✨✧ Captain BeyondSufficiently Breathless ... LP
Capricorn, 1973. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A slightly gentler album than the first Captain Beyond outing – but one that really has the group stretching out their wings wonderfully! The set's recorded both in Macon and Sausalito – and really has a vibe that indicates that mix – a core southern rock element, handled with the soulful undercurrents of early 70s Capricorn Records – but given some freer-thinking elements at times from the Bay Area scene! The drums power through nicely at some of the best points – but even the laidback tunes are pretty darn great – and we honestly never can understand why Captain Beyond weren't as big as some of their contemporaries from the southern scene. Titles include "Starglow Energy", "Evil Men", "Drifting In Space", "Bright Blue Tango", "Everything's A Circle", and "Voyages Of Past Travelers". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Miles DavisWater Babies (Japanese pressing) ... CD
Columbia (Japan), 1967. Used ... Out Of Stock
A much different album than you might expect from the cover – hardly the funky 70s set implied by the Big Fun-styled cover – and instead a lost slice of work from his groundbreaking late 60s years! The set was recorded in 1967, but unissued until Miles late 70s time away from the studio – hence the cover, which attempts to contemporanize the record – and the music is very much in the dark moods and sharp tones of Filles De Kilimanjaro, and features a somewhat similar group! The core quintet of Wayne Shorter on tenor, Herbie Hancock on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Tony Williams on drums handles the first half of the set – but the group's then expanded to include Chick Corea on electric piano along with Herbie on keys – and Ron Carter steps out so that Dave Holland can bring some more modern tones to the bass. Tracks are all somewhat long, and titles include "Capricorn", "Water Babies", "Sweet Pea", and "Two Faced". CD

✨✧ Livingston TaylorLiv ... CD
Capricorn, 1971. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great little record from Livingston Taylor – one that's got a few traces of his brother James' famous style, but which is definitely in his own bag as well! The approach here is personal and sometimes poetic – that fragile approach to singer/songwriter work that emerged in the wake of Tim Hardin, and which is best presented as it is here – by an artist with an unassuming and straightforward manner. Instrumentation is lightly folksy, with some jazz inflections – and the production by Jon Landau is nicely bare bones. Titles include "Open Up Your Eyes", "Gentleman", "Easy Prey", "Be That Way", "Get Out Of Bed", and "Mom Dad". CD
