Next MorningNext Morning ... LP
Calla/Survival Research, 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99 24.99
A heady bit of work from this obscure Caribbean band – much more rock than funk, but put together with a nice combination of both in the mix! We might link these guys slightly to a group like Merda/Black Merda – maybe given some inspiration from the work of Jimi Hendrix, but sometimes coming across with an equal dose from Sly Stone as well – all of which makes for a mighty great sound in the music! Guitar, organ, and bass are very strong in the mix – and titles include "A Jam Of Love", "The Next Morning", "Faces Are Smiling", "Back To The Stone Age", and "Life". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Bob Marley & The WailersBirth Of A Legend (single LP version) ... LP
Calla, 1960s. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Early, early Coxsone Dodd produced sides of groovy rocksteady, voiced by a young Bob Marley with Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer. While we don't find this material nearly as compelling as his later work produced by Lee Perry and then his huge international hits, it's great Studio One rocksteady and an interesting portrait of a legend in the earliest stages of his career. 10 tracks, including "Simmer Down", "Maga Dog", "I Made A Mistake", "I Am Going Home", "Donna", "Nobody Knows" and "Love & Affection". LP, Vinyl record album
(70s white label promo. Cover has a promo stamp, light wear, small price sticker remnants, remnants from a tracklist sticker in front. Label has an ink stamp.)

✨✧ JJ JacksonBut It's Alright/Boogaloo Baby ... 7-inch
Calla, 1966. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
One of the greatest pop soul singles of all time! Even though we hear it lots of times on oldies stations, we still get a thrill from the great raw sound of "But It's Alright" – especially the great choppy guitar bit on the intro! Plus, this original Calla pressing of the track also features an amazing b-side – the hard storming "Boogaloo Baby", which is an incredible Northern Soul track with a groove that just won't quit! Pounding piano, great crowd sounds on the chorus, and a runaway groove that never stops! 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ FuzzLike An Open Door/Leave It All Behind Me ... 7-inch
Calla, Early 70s. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Two tasty numbers from this obscure girl group from the early 70s. Both tracks have the Fuzz singing in a more sophisticated style than their contemporaries – not giving into "little girl" sorts of love lyrics, but hitting a more mature, ultimately more sexy approach to the material. Nice stuff, and both tracks are written by Sheila Young. 7-inch, Vinyl record

The tracks include "Anyway The Wind Blows", "I Want The World To Know", "Invisible Flowers", "Greedy Green", "Lost In A Shuffle Of Love", "Momma Bakes Biscuits", and "Naked Truth". ✨✧ Doris TroyI'll Do Anything – The Doris Troy Anthology 1960 to 1996 ... CD
Kent (UK), 1960s/1970s/Late 90s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Killer soul from Doris Troy – a wonderful selection of classic singles from a variety of different labels – mostly smoking selections from the 60s, but a few rare gems from later years too! Doris is one of those singers who never hit the chart heights of some of her contemporaries, but always managed to do impeccable work – as you'll hear here on a range of singles for labels like Calla, Cameo, Capitol, Atlantic, and Apple! Troy's got this amazingly rich voice – one we'd rank right up there with Aretha Franklin at her best – supported here by a range of backings that run from deep soul to uptown soul to some warmer 70s modes. Titles include "Face Up To The Truth", "Just One Look", "What A Night Night Night", "Don't Tell Your Mama", "You Tore Me Up Inside", "Heartaches", "He's Qualified", "I'll Do Anything", "Hear Me Calling", "Can't Hold On", "Tomorrow Is Another Day", and "What A Wonderful Lover". ✨✧ Betty LavetteNearer To You ... CD
Snapper (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Fantastic female soul – and an incredible collection of work from the young Betty Lavette – easily one of our favorite female soul singers of the time! The set brings together late 60s tracks recorded for the Calla and Silver Fox label – and as great as her later work might be, this is the stuff that will really blow you away – the real deal, right-on-the-money sort of tracks that made Betty a legend right from the get-go! Backings are often nicely funky, and production has that great gritty way of unlocking the full depth of Lavette's vocals without going for any easy soul cliches – a kind of purity that's really kept these tracks at the top of our stack over the years. The set features a great book-style cover, with notes on the music – and the CD also features a few duets with Hank Ballard, too! Titles include "He Made a Woman Out of Me", "Do Your Duty", "We Got to Slip Around", "Love's Made a Fool of Me", "Let's Go Let's Go Let's Go", "Hello Sunshine", "My Train's Coming In", "Nearer To You", and "I'm In Love". ✨✧ Eddie CallahanFalse Ego ... CD
Time Lag Records, Mid 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A private press relic from the Santa Cruz Mountains by Eddie Callahan – a really cool mix of soft rock melodies with soul searching lyricism and unpredictable instrumentation – one that's been heavily sought by collectors and is well worth it! There's a bit of post hippie spiritualism, but it a plainspoken, unpretentious way that's really endearing – and the music is totally creative. There's some laidback folk rock guitars and oddball bits of Moog, mellotron and stylistic detours abound. Cool stuff revived with reverence by Time-Lag Records! Includes "Paper Rain", "Dying To Sing", "Don't You Know (How I Feel?)", "Judge Me", "Where Will I Be Tomorrow?", "Just Across The Line", "Santa Cruz Mountains", "Shake Your Woogie" and "Flying". CD

Jim WhiteAll Hits – Memories ... LP
Drag City, 2024. New Copy ... $21.99 27.99
A brilliant solo effort from drummer Jim White – a musician who's provided support to a wide range of rock greats – including Nick Cave, PJ Harvey, and Bill Callahan – but one who's also a secret master of the drum kit, with a command of his instrument that's really breathtaking! In some ways, the set's a record of solo drums – maybe not as improvised as on a free jazz album, but pretty open overall – yet Jim also mixes in some other sounds too, mostly just to fill up the background space so that the drums are in the lead – a gentle sonic palette that still emphasizes all the live, spontaneous action on the acoustic drum kit at the core! Titles include "Names Make The Name", "Here Comes", "Soft Material", "Curtains", "Percussion Build", "Marketplace", and "Walking The Block". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Gil Scott-HeronI'm New Here (10th Anniversary expanded edition) ... CD
XL, 2010. Used 2 CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Heavy, soul-baring lyricism delivered with spiritual resonance and wise authority by Gil Scott-Heron – his first album shot in far too many years, and a direct hit – essential listening for longtime listeners and neophytes alike and a well worthy entry in a legendary career! Scott-Heron is documenting his world as profoundly and poetically as ever here, and the production is built with spare, haunting beats and atmospheric bits of strings, guitar, keys, loose atmospherics and hazy electronics – loosely framing his voice and giving it all the room in needs to carry the mood. Gil sings and speaks with equal authority throughout, and you can hear the years in his voice like never before, giving him the worn edges of the old soul he always evoked. This is a record we're proud to put among his treasured recordings of the 70s and early 80s. Titles include "On Coming From A Broken Home" (Parts 1 & 2), "Your Soul And Mine", "I'll Take Care Of You", "Where Did The Night Go", "Running", "The Crutch" and more, including several interludes that are pretty amazing – captures of conversation that show Gil nearly as charismatic and poetic in "off" moments as he is recording a song. Also includes 2 covers, "Me And The Devil" (the Robert Johnson song) and the title track, Smog/Bill Callahan's "I'm New Here", given a whole new life. Expanded anniversary version also features some great material recorded at the same time – the titles "Handsome Johnny", "My Cloud", "Piano Player", "King Henry IV", "Jazz", and 2010 live studio takes of "Home Is Where The Hatred Is", "Is That Jazz", and "Winter In America". ✨✧ Three SunsOn A Magic Carpet ... LP
RCA, 1960. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A real standout in the catalog of The Three Suns – one of those records that shines even more than their dozens of other albums, thanks to a tightly syncopated groove! As with other sides by the trio, the music here is from a blend of organ, accordion, and guitar – plus well-chosen other instruments used sparingly – but there's also a bit of a bottom groove to the record too, supplied by loosely used electric basslines that sort of buoy up the Suns' sound, and push them away from outdated modes of earlier years. The approach is evocative and often grooving in a "Baby Elephant Walk" sort of way – and titles here include "Fleur De Paree", "Moritat", "High Noon", "Terry Theme", "Canadian Sunset", "Ruby", and "Meet Mr Callaghan". ✨✧ VariousGlucklich V – A Collection Of Brazilian Flavours From The Past & The Present Compiled by Rainer Truby ... LP
Compost (Germany), 1970s/2002. Near Mint- 2LP ... Out Of Stock
A great blend of old and new Brazilian grooves – kind of the ultimate expression of this great series! Like the first 2 volumes, this 5th one features some great lost older tracks; and like the 3rd and 4th volumes, it's also got some new tunes that are really wonderful. There's a lot of percussion in the grooves throughout – sweet keyboards and tight riffing mixes with rootsy drums, soulful vocals, and other great touches – soaring forward towards a jazzy global future that knows no boundaries! 2LP set features 10 tracks in all – including "Torn (Blissom rmx)" by Rise Ashen, "Comanche" by Jorge Ben, "Agua De Beber" by Aquarius Y Luiz Antonio, "La La Li" by Rachael Calladine, "Fica Mal Com Deus" by Rosalia De Souza, "Scott Air (traveling light mix)" by Ben Human, "Bohemian (Bah Samba main mix)" by Muro, "Icarai" by Os Ipanemas, "Eh Luande (Mimosa avantgarde mix)" by Racoon, and "Gypsy Woman" by Montefiori Cocktail.
