Salah Ragab & The Cairo Jazz BandEgypt Strut (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Strut (UK), 1974. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
Amazing grooves like you've never heard before – seminal sides by Salah Ragab and his Cairo Jazz Band – work done by the percussionist who'd also worked with Sun Ra, but who's even more amazing here on his own! As you can probably guess from their name, the ensemble was an Egyptian one – working in an incredible blend of jazz and more traditional Egyptian-styled sounds – a blend that comes across with all the exotic feel of the pyramids at dawn, but which manages to groove like some of the best funky work from America at the time! Instrumentation includes lot of percussion, heavy piano and horns, and some especially great flute on most tracks – all coming together with a sound that's unlike anything else we've heard before. This collection is the first time that this music has been brought together officially, all with the kind of top-shelf production and packaging we've come to expect from the Art Yard label! Titles include "Ramadan In Space Time", "Neveen", "Kleopatra", "Mervat", and "Oriental Mood". CD features 8 more bonus tracks from related sessions too! CD

✨✧ Cairo Free Jazz EnsembleHeliopolis ... LP
Holidays (Italy), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the most striking Egyptian jazz recordings of the 70s – and maybe one of the most avant, too – an unusual recording done at the German Culture Institute in Cairo, and an early collaboration between Hartmut Geerken and Salah Ragab! Ragab plays drums and percussion – but the approach is very different than his more rhythmic Cairo Jazz Band dates – as the group here really live up to the "free jazz" in their name – and come across more like the Sun Ra Arkestra during their greatest moments of free improvisation! Other players include Farouk Abdel Rahman on alto and percussion, Abdel Hakim Zael on baritone sax, Moohi El-Din Osman on bass, and Mahmoud Ayoub on tenor – and Geerken himself plays a wide range of percussive instruments and other items – including a "toy car producing the sound of a siren". Titles include "Liberty For Iratilim", "Turnus", and "Diagnosis For Percussion". LP, Vinyl record album
(50th Anniversary limited edition of 500 copies!)

Spector, 2022. New Copy ... $39.99 50.00
A beautiful look at club culture far from the mainstream – farther flung locales than London, Paris, or Ibiza – presented here in a way that's very different than the hype that's usually associated with the nightclub scene! There's almost a poetic approach to the book at times – a series of essays and photos that get at all the many aspects and cultures of music scenes in cities that include Bristol, Johannesburg, Cairo, Kyiv, Lagos, Lisbon, Launda, Nairobi, and Naples – illuminated wonderfully with details that go far beyond DJs and music. The book features many different voices contributing text – which furthers the spirit of the journey – and the whole thing is a hefty softcover volume – over 500 pages, with hundreds of images in color and black and white! Sun Ra/Salah RagabSun Ra Arkestra Meets Salah Ragab In Egypt – Plus The Cairo Jazz Band ... CD
Praxis/Strut (UK), 1983. New Copy ... $14.99 15.99
Really unique recordings from the Sun Ra Arkestra – material recorded in Egypt in 1983 – juxtaposed with sessions from percussionist Salah Ragab and the Cairo Jazz Band! The work here has much more of a "jazz meets world" sound than some of Ra's other recordings – and most tracks are extremely melodic and rhythmic – in a way that mixes Eastern instrumentation and themes with some of the more familiar Arkestra modes – a sound that takes the Sun Ra groove one step further, and which sounds totally sublime! Highlights include the groover "Egypt Strut", the flute-heavy "Oriental Mood", and beautiful "Dawn". Really great stuff – and a key glimpse at this rare slice of Ra's career! CD

✨✧ Eddie & ErnieTime Waits For No One ... LP
Cairo/Mississippi, Late 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A deep soul treasure! You've probably never heard of the team of Eddie & Ernie, but they've risen to fame over the years with collectors of rare 60s soul – and have recently been immortalized on volumes of Dave Godin's Deep Soul Treasures, one of the most important soul compilation series to come out in the past few decades! In fact, Eddie & Ernie were so "lost" for years, this album marks their first-ever full length set on vinyl – long overdue, given that they were recording in the 60s and early 70s – both as Eddie and Ernie, and under the names Phoenix Express, The New Bloods, and Little Worley & The Drops. The duo have a brilliant blend of deep and sweet soul that makes us wonder why these guys were never bigger than they were – and think of the set as the same as finding a stash of some of the best 60s soul singles you could hope to hear. Titles include "Bullets Don't Have Eyes", "Lost Friends", "I'm A Young Man", "I'm Going For Myself", "Watch Your Step", "Self Service", "Falling Tears", "That's The Way It Is", "Time Waits For No One", and "Why Do You Treat Me Like You Do". ✨✧ VariousWorld Is A Cafeteria – American Soul Music & One Song From Ghana 1955 to 1998 ... LP
Cairo/Mississippi, 1960s. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
A stunning package of rare and classic soul – very much in the spirit of the other titles on the Cairo imprint, and put together with a huge booklet of notes and images, and a great cover to boot! The approach here is nicely focused, despite the large date range – and most of the music is from the big 60s soul heyday in the US – served up with an approach that's especially heavy on deep soul and southern soul, but which also throws in a few other surprises along the way! Titles include "I'll Be There" by Betty & Roy, "You Don't Love Me" by Gene Burks, "I'm A Lonely Stranger" by Arthur Connelly, "You Don't Have To Worry" by Doris & Kelly, "Don't Let Me Down" by Charlotte Dada, "I've Cried" by The Jhamels, "Goodbye" by Curley Moore, "Get It Over" by Ben & Spence, "Gonna Have To Put You Down" by Oscar Bishop & The Bishops, "It Do Me Good" b The Pitter Pats, "What Are You Gonna Do" by Debra Lewis, "I'm Gonna Hold On To You" by Alice Rozier & Little Joe, "Go Back Home" by Allen toussaint, "All I Want Is You" by Zilla Mayes, "Darling I Still Love You" by Joyce Kennedy, and "Hit The Road Jack" by Margie Hendrix & Percy Mayfield. Arhoolie, 1960. New Copy (reissue)... $16.99 19.99
A rare one from TX blues great Melvin "Lil Son" Jackson – massively influential, though! Lil Son has a kind of relaxed vocal style, not as gritty as some of the other southern acoustic blues figures of the period, be they fellow Texans or from elsewhere – but that voice carries his blues beautifully well, and we hear traces of his style in countless younger artists to come! His guitar playing is just as great, too! Includes "Blues Come To Texas", "Cairo Blues", "Ticket Agent", "Santa Fey Blues", "Groundhog Blues", "Gambler Blues", "Rollin' Mill Went Down", "Robert Blues" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

Salsa, Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99 29.99
A killer cooker on the small Salsa label from New York – part of the Mary Lou family of labels, all of whom really knew how to deliver up the goods back in the day! Like most of the label's records, there's a nicely varied vibe going on here – a lot less structured than some of the Fania/Tico/Alegre material, and maybe even closer to the ground in terms of the scene – as Cheo Rosario leads a great little group that features lively piano from Gaby Diaz, trombone from Reynaldo (aka Astroboy), and warm, round basslines from Felix Torres. Vocals are by Carmen Rosaro and Jorge Martinez – and titles include "Look Out", "Cairo", "All Night Long", "El Vive Bien Del Barrio", "Pa'Sabio Quien", "Solo Paria Ti", and "The World Is Full Of Sin". Gore VidalThieves Fall Out ... Book
Hard Case Crime, Early 50s. New Copy ... $3.99 9.95
Rare pulp fiction from Gore Vidal – who wrote this book under the name of Cameron Kay in the early years of his career! The story's a tale of action, adventure, and a bit of steamy sex – set amidst postwar Cairo – and penned with the sort of slinky prose that would later make Vidal a big hit on the paperback racks! The story's been lost for over 60 years – and is beautifully brought back to life here by the folks at Hard Case Crime – as part of their wonderful series of books that digs deep into the past of American pulp to find overlooked treasures like this. 236 pages, hardcover. A really amazing package – one that brings together three rare Saturn albums recorded by Sun Ra & The Arkestra during their legendary visit to Egypt in 1971 – plus two more albums' worth of never-issued material! The three Saturn records are worth the price of the package alone – Dark Myth Equation Visitation, Nidhamu, and Horizon – all featuring the Arkestra taking on newly exotic modes in the Egyptian setting, partly from inspiration, partly from the assistance of Hartmut Geerken, whose hospitality really helped the group open up. The other two records feature material recorded at Geerken's home, plus a TV broadcast and live performance in Cairo – with titles that include "Egyptian Oasias (parts 1 & 2)", "We Sing This Song", "Imagination", "Pleiades", "We'll Wait For You", "They'll Come Back", and "Nidhamu (parts 1 & 2)". 4CD set features 19 previously unissued recordings – plus new sleeve notes, session details, and more in the big booklet within! ✨✧ Sun RaNidhamu ... LP
Saturn/Strut (UK), 1971. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A great lost album from Sun Ra – one of a handful that he recorded on a legendary trip to Egypt in 1971 – live throughout, with that special sort of flavor that the Arkesta picked up while visiting the land of the pyramids! The work was recorded in Cairo – by a lineup that includes John Gilmore on tenor, Danny Davis and Marshall Allen on alto and flute, Kwame Hadi on trumpet, and Pat Patrick on baritone – plus Ra on organ, moog, and rocksichord – delivering some great electronic touches to the music! The title track, "Nidhamu", takes up all of one side of the album, and features Ra playing a weird spacey mini-moog solo. The other tracks – "Space Loneliness No 2", "Discipline No 11", and "Discipline No 15" – feature more of the band, but are more like extended keyboard parts as well. LP, Vinyl record album

A long-awaited full length set – one that finally brings together all of the amazing Tony Allen reworks done by the Honest Jon's label! These "chop up" tracks were originally issued over a range of limited 12" singles, and they're really amazing stuff – not just remixes of Tony Allen's work, but re-recordings and re-interpretations as well – a batch of music that stands amazingly well on its own, even if you're not a fan of Tony originally – and which takes his music into even more exotic territory than just Afro Funk!
