Lou DonaldsonScorpion – Live At The Cadillac Club ... CD
Blue Note (UK), 1970. Used ... $9.99
Rare work from funky Lou – unreleased for years! This is an excellent live set that was recorded in 1970, when Lou was at the height of his Blue Note powers, and working with a group that included Idris Muhammad (drums), Melvin Sparks (guitar), and Leon Spencer (organ). Recorded live at the Cadillac Club in Newark, New Jersey, this set's a perfect document of what a funky lounge gig was like in the era of the organ/tenor combos. The group swings hard and funky, with a sound that's like their best Blue Note recordings, and the track list includes "Peepin", "The Scorpion", "Alligator Boogaloo", and "Footpattin' Time". CD

Asylum/Atlantic, Late 70s. New Copy 3LP ... Out Of Stock
A great second chapter in the career of songwriting genius John Prine – his late 70s run of records for Asylum – a perfect place for the new developments both in the ways that Pine would pen a tune, and in the way he'd deliver the material! These records really helped break John past an audience of folk and country – and forever made his mark – and the box features the full three albums Bruised Orange, Pink Cadillac, and Storm Windows – all with original artwork, on heavy vinyl! ✨✧ John PrineCrooked Piece Of Time – The Atlantic & Asylum Albums 1971 to 1980 (John Prine/Diamonds In The Rough/Sweet Revenge/Common Sense/Bruised Orange/Pink Cadillac/Storm Windows) (7CD set) ... CD
Atlantic, 1970s. New Copy 7CD ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic run of records – music that firmly established John Prine as one of the most inventive singer/songwriters of the 70s! Prine rose up out of the Chicago folk scene of the 60s – but he soon became something different than just a folk or country singer – even though he was admired strongly by both worlds of music. Instead, John's songs took on this new sense of wit and bite learned from folk, but delivered in a style that was maybe less preachy – but also not as rural as the vibe of country tunesmiths who were changing things up at the time. There's definitely echoes of the work of Kris Kristofferson or Shel Silverstein in Prine's words – but the execution is completely his own, and transforms wonderfully over the course of these records – at a level that shows just how much the singer was able to keep ahead of the pack, and keep his contributions relevant over the years. The box features the full albums John Prine, Diamonds In The Rough, Sweet Revenge, Common Sense, Bruised Orange, Pink Cadillac, and Storm Windows – in LP replica sleeves, with new notes, and poster inserts too. Harry BeckettJoy Unlimited ... CD
Cadillac (UK), 1974. New Copy ... $14.99
Genius work from trumpeter Harry Beckett – the kind of easygoing electric work that he seemed to do better than anyone else on the British scene of the early 70s! The record's got a laidback approach that's really unique – one that pits Beckett's trumpet against guitar by Ray Russell, keyboards from Brian Miller, and additional bass, drums, and congas – the last of which are used to underscore the sound nicely. The sound shows almost no influence from the electric trumpet jazz of Miles Davis, Donald Byrd, or Freddie Hubbard – and is instead uniquely Beckett's own bag – almost always slightly funky or grooving, but never too much so – and neither too out nor too jamming, with a lanquid quality that's totally great. Titles include "No Time For Hello", "Bracelets Of Sound", "Rings Within Rings", and "Not Just Tomorrow". CD

Tori HandsleyAs We Stand ... CD
Cadillac (UK), 2020. New Copy ... $14.99
Tori Handsley may not look like your usual jazz musician on the front cover – but she's part of the contemporary London scene, and really breaks out here alongside some killer drums from the great Moses Boyd! Handley plays both piano and electric harp with lots of cool effects – and the trio also features this round, rolling basswork from Ruth Goller – a player who's a perfect counterpart for Boyd's nonstop sense of energy! This is the first we've ever heard of Tori – and she's wonderful on piano, playing with this bold sense of flow that should get her plenty of attention in years to come – and her use of the electric harp is equally great, and never gimmicky at all – a very cool instrument that's often processed in ways that really bring out the richness of its sound. Sahra Gure sings on three of the album's tracks, but the main vibe is instrumental – and titles include "Polar Retreat", "Rivers Of Mind", "Home", "Settling Into The Sun", "Kestrel", "As We Stand", "Out Of Sight Out Of Mind", and "Convolution". Cadillac (UK), 1959. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The first-ever vinyl issue of the earliest recordings ever made by Fela – and a set that also includes two tracks that appear here for the first time ever! The work was recorded in London at the end of the 50s, and features a very young Fela doing a jazzy take on highlife styles – playing lead trumpet and doing vocals in a more traditional mode – with backing from a small combo that features guitar, piano, tenor, bass, and percussion – all nice and jazzy, especially the tenor – with a very hip London blend of modern modes and Nigerian roots. The whole thing's got a great postcolonial vibe – the changing sound of London in the postwar years – and titles include "Highlife Rakers Calypso No 1", "Wa Ba Mi Jo Bosue", "Aicana", and "Fela's Special". ✨✧ Johnny Dyani With Witchdoctor's Son & Dudu PukwanaRejoice/Together ... CD
Cadillac (UK), 1978/1979. New Copy 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A pair of albums from the legendary Johnny Dyani – packaged here in one great little set! Rejoice features searing live work from Johnny Dyani – a set that has the bassist opening up strongly in a trio with Mongezi Feza on trumpet and Okey Temiz on drums and percussion! Feza sounds even better here than usual – blowing these long, inventive solo lines that match the work of Ted Curson for 70s fire – really spurred on by Okey's creative changes, into a soulful space that may well be some of Mongezi's most spiritually expressive of the 70s! Dyani's bass is strong, and ever-present – never needing to dominate, but always felt as this rich pulse – and powerful melodic element at just the right moments. Titles include "Mad High", "Makaya Makaya", "Pukwana" and "Imbomgolo". CD also features an unreleased track from the same performance – the 20 minute "Mad High Revisited". Together is a record that really gets back to Johnny Dyani's roots in South African jazz! Although Dyani and his expatriates in the Blue Notes helped give London a new sound of avant jazz expression in the 70s, the music here returns to the warmer melodic style of their early 60s days – with loping rhythms that draw on regional tradition, and soulful interplay between the alto of Dudu Pukwana, tenor of Peter Shimmy Radise, and keyboards from Dyani – who shifts his instrument for this special recording! The group also features use of guitar, congas, whistles, and a South American harp – used in rhythmic ways that pulsate warmly – on titles that include "Kalahari", "Tula Tula", "High Priest", "Johnny's Kwela", and "Together". ✨✧ David MurrayLondon Concert ... CD
Cadillac (UK), 1978. New Copy 2CDs ... Out Of Stock
A tremendous early recording from David Murray – recorded in London (as you'd guess by the title), but with all the best spirit of his early loft jazz sides! There's a tightness here that's missing from some of Murray's other albums of the period – a sense of soulful, spiritual swing that only seems to make the album open up even more, and which allows for some incredibly rhythmic solo work from Murray. We love this one to death, and would easily rank it as one of our favorite David Murray recordings ever – and would also say that the album's noteworthy for some great work from Butch Morris on cornet and Curtis Clark on piano – working in a quintet with Brian Smith on bass and Clifford Jarvis on drums. Titles include "Jas Van", "Secret Of The Circle", "Murray's Steps", and "Cancion De Amor En Espanol" – and the CD also features 2 bonus tracks – "Nairobi" and "Flowers For Albert". CD

✨✧ Mike Osborne with Harry Miller & Tony LevinBirmingham Jazz Concert ... CD
Cadillac (UK), 1976. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Unreleased genius from British altoist Mike Osborne – and a set that easily matches his classic albums of the 70s! The double-length set was recorded live in the mid 70s, and is issued here for the first time – a wonderfully tight trio outing that features Osborne's alto alongside the bass of Harry Miller and drums of Tony Levin – in a mode that's decidedly Coltrane-influenced, and which has a searching, spiritual quality that's even deeper than most other British work of the time! We've never heard Osborne play with so much feeling, and Miller's basswork is wonderful too – really underscoring the sound with a full, rich quality that grounds the whole proceedings nicely – a soaring, majestic energy that's a far cry from some of the unstructured freedom from other Brit groups of the same stretch. Tremendous throughout – and with cuts that include "One For George", "Alfie", "Almost Home Kathy", "More Mike", "Ossie's Opener", "Awakening Spirit", and "Cousin Mary". CD

✨✧ Dudu PukwanaNight Time Is The Right Time – 60s Soho Sounds ... CD
Cadillac (UK), 1967/1968. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A completely unique slide of work from Dudu Pukwana – a side of the reedman you may never have heard before! Dudu's best known for his work in the Blue Notes – that legendary avant assemblage of South African players – and although he's also recorded in other creative settings, this may well be the first time we've heard him on a soul jazz session – burning brightly with some killer Hammond from organist Bob Stuckey! The combo's tight and right on the money – grooving live at Ronnie Scotts with the feel of some Prestige Records sax/organ group of the mid 60s – a real change for Dudu, but one we really love! Pukwana still puts in lots of unusual edges in his music – some odd tones and unusual shifts that really keep things interesting – especially giving the group's use of mostly original compositions, most by Dudu! Titles include "Jauana's Dream", "Messengers", "Kicks For Sale", "B My Dear", "Moonshine", "Kippie", and "Blessing Light". Plus, the CD features 5 more tracks by a trio that features Stuckey on Hammond and Terry Smith on guitar – "I Feel Pretty", "All Of You", "When I Grow Too Old To Dream", "Bob's Hop", and "Sweet Georgia Brown". ✨✧ Mike WestbrookLast Night At The Old Place ... CD
Cadillac (UK), 1968. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really fantastic live performance by the Mike Westbrook Concert Band – recorded right around the same time as his seminal albums for Deram – and with an equally amazing sound! The "old place" here is Ronnie Scott's old club – which was still leased for a few months as the new one was being opened in 1968, which gave Westbrook and other young musicians the chance to try out some of the incredible new ideas that would really set the British jazz scene apart in the late 60s! There's a pivotal feel to the record that's wonderful – really informing the explosion of sounds on Westbrook's late 60s albums, as he uses both older jazz compositions and his own great work – to make a pastiche of modes and modern moments that really blows us away – served up by a lineup that includes Mike Osborne and John Surman on saxes, Malcolm Griffiths and Paul Rutherford on trombones, Dave Holdsworth on piano, Harry Miller on bass, and Alan Jackson on drums – with Westbrook leading the group on piano. Titles include "Who's Who", "A Life Of It's Own", "The Few", "Lover Man", "For Ever & A Day", "Folk Song", "We Salute You", "Flying", and "Can't Get It Out Of My Mind". CD

Very groovy work from these two Brit sound library greats – loads of funky tunes, and great keyboards too – all served up in a massively funky record that was never issued to the public at large! Had this set hit the real record racks in 1974, it might well have challenged some of the greatest material from George Duke or Herbie Hancock – as the tunes are mostly funky, and feature lots of wonderful work on a wide variety of keyboards – sometimes getting all cool and wigged-out, even when the grooves are upbeat – a bit like Herbie in his Sextant years! Titles include "Hit Me Hit Me", "Big Black Cadillac", "Collision Course", "The Executive", "Hovercraft", "Mermaid", "Auto Glide", "Where The Action Is", and "Getting It Together". Forget the silly cowboy costume on the front cover – because this is a heck of a great album! Bo might have gotten saddled (no pun intended!) with a silly gimmick for the title and image of the set – but the album's one of his best from the early Chess years, and features a rip-roaring batch of tracks that really cut it up in his classic scratchy guitar mode of the time! Lyrics are great – nearly all originals by Bo himself, with that hip swinging, and hard-wailing approach that was always a lot of fun – and cuts include "Gunslinger", "Diddling", "Cheyenne", "Cadillac", and "Doing The Craw-Daddy". CD also features 2 bonus cuts with titles that include "Working Man" & "Do What I Say". CD

Dave DouglasDizzy Atmosphere ... CD
Greenleaf, 2020. New Copy ... $14.99 15.99
Dave Douglas works here in a group with two trumpets – Dave Adewumi on the other horn in the lead, but playing with a voice that's deeply distinct from the leader! The group's got that sort of fresh approach that seems to make each different record by Douglas a very different project – and the rest of the lineup includes Matt Stevens on guitar, Fabian Almazan on piano, Carmen Rothwell on bass, and Joey Baron on drums – building things up slowly, but in this way that sometimes has them circling the two trumpets, sometimes coming together more directly. The album's got a subtitle of "Dizzy Gillespie at zero gravity" – and oddly, that's a bit of the feel of the record. Titles include "Con Almazan", "Cadillac", "Manteca", "Mondrian", "We Pray", "Pickin The Cabbage", and "See Me Now". CD

A straight-up incredible batch of recordings by the Austin singer-songwriter ghost of a legend that is Blaze Foley – a self-destructive character better known to the stars he influenced than he is to the masses (he is the "Drunken Angel" who Lucinda Williams wrote and sang about) – material from the mid-to-late 70s when he was billed as Deputy Dawg and put together here for one of the best compilations on Fat Possum in years! What makes this set so wonderful is the cohesive flow of it. It's solo folk country material recorded in a trio of intimate sessions from February of '76, November of that same year, and September of '78. Plaintive in presentation, with a passion that both soars to the heavens and plunges the depths. Bruised and totally beautiful! He's post bop, post cubop, but still has all the best elements of those eras – wrapped up into a more complicated Latin-tinged style that's filled with warmth, humor, and some pretty compelling grooves. This set is one of Diz's best from the time – and it's got some tracks that are real classics in his book, like "Swing Low, Sweet Cadillac", "Ungawa", "Lorraine", and "Constantinople". Early Kinks in all of their glory – showing a bit more of an R&B influence than in their later years, but still already working with all the wit and imagination that won us over many years ago! The tunes have a surprising roughness, if you're only used to the group from a few years later – but that makes kind of a nice change too – almost a distillation of the early Davies brother ideals at their start – without any overblown concepts to get in the way. Tunes include the originals "You Really Got Me", "So Mystifying", "Stop Your Sobbin", "Revenge", and "I Took My Baby Home" – plus versions of "Beautiful Delilah", "Bald Headed Woman", "Cadillac", and "I'm A Lover Not A Fighter". Timeless and soulful outer space grooves lace teh production and beats behind crazy good, free flowing, inventive rhymes that still manage to stay grounded enough to aptly reflect the darker realities of the ATL of the time. Laidback beats with plenty of boom – just the right sort of mellow setting to allow the rhymes to flow in the best way possible – core lyrics from Emcee Sick, with contributions from Cudtry Cadillac, Dheema, and Jon Blazini! There's a nicely jazzy current – almost in an early 90s Tribe Called Quest style, but more individual, as the best instrumental touches are live, and less tied to the historical references that samples might provide. Both the rhythms and lyrics are nicely straightforward – again a nice sort of throwback, but hardly retro at all – on titles that include "Pstabull", "Finesseful", "Basso", "Indestructible 92", "Big Bad Signal", "Anotha Monday Nite", and "Wanderverse". Ben SidranFree In America/Doctor Is In/Little Kiss In The Night/Live At Montreux ... CD
BGO (UK), Late 70s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $14.99
Four albums from the great Ben Sidran – a mighty hip jazz singer, and a great pianist too! First up is Free In America – a great little set all the way through – and about as classic as you can get for Sidran in the 70s! The album's got a bit more soul in the mix, but still has some jazzy elements in the backings – and where things were sometimes messed up in the past, they're much more straightforward here – in ways that make the record really sparkle nicely! Ben's voice is still really compelling, and as on his best albums, there's some nice funky grooves in the mix that keep things fresh. Players include Phil Upchurch on bass and guitar, Woody Shaw on trumpet, David Newman and Sonny Seals on saxes, and Richard Tee on organ. Titles include the great instrumental "Let's Make A Deal" – a fast groover with guitar and keyboards riffing away, sounding like some lost jazz funk gem from the Fantasy Records catalog – plus "Beg For It", "Cuban Connection", "Free In America", "New York State Of Mind", and "Feel Your Groove". Doctor Is In is one of Ben Sidran's biggest records from the 70s – a smooth combination of jazz, fusion, soul, and a bit of New Orleans groove! There's still a very unique feel to Sidran's music here – a sense of personality that really makes the whole thing sparkle – and which keeps the record from sounding too much like anyone else. Grooves are a great mix of jazz and soul elements – in territory that certainly has a 70s LA sort of quality, but which never gets too poppy or commercial – thanks to Ben's vocals, and mostly small combo backings from players who include Phil Upchurch on bass, Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Larry Carlton on guitar, and Tony Williams on drums. Nick DeCaro adds in a bit of extra strings from time to time – and titles include "Silver's Serenade", "Charlie's Blues", "Be Nice", "Goodbye Porkpie Hat", "One Way Grave", and "See You On The Other Side". Little Kiss In The Night is one of our all-time favorites from the great Ben Sidran – thanks to a strong dose of fusion in the mix! The grooves here are somehow a bit sharper than the few Sidran records before – with a quality that almost reminds us of Fantasy Records soul from the mid 70s, or some of the best jazz-tinged R&B sets of the time – all linked back nicely to Ben's rootsier elements from the start. As always, Sidran's got some really top-shelf musicians on board to help him find his groove – including Phil Woods on alto sax, Blue Mitchell on trumpet, and Arthur Adams on guitar – and arrangements on many numbers are by Mike Melvoin, who sounds even funkier here than we'd expect. There's a great instrumental on the set called "The Cadillac Kid", which has a nice hard fusion groove – and other cuts include "Face Your Fears", "Doing You", and "Moose The Mooch". Live At Montreux is tightly funky work from Ben Sidran – thanks to a strong lineup of players, and the open-ended relaxed setting of Montreux! The tracks here are a bit longer than some of Ben's studio sides for the label at the time – and almost hearken back to the more open flow of his Blue Thumb years – with plenty of room not only for Sidran's great vocals, but also from instrumental contributions from Steve Khan on guitar, Mike Mainieri on vibes, and the Brecker Brothers on horns. Titles include "I Remember Clifford", "Eat It", "Song For A Sucker Like You", "Midnight Tango/Walking With The Blues", and "Come Together". CD

Blue Jack Jazz/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 2002. New Copy ... About February 17, 2021
An excellent group that really lives up to their name – a very soulful quintet, with a groove that's right up there with the best hardbop of the late 50s and early 60s! The ensemble's led by Dutch pianist Cees Slinger, but it features some especially strong work from the hornmen – tenorist Simon Rigter and trumpeter Ruud Bruels, who've got a great way of coming together on the start of the tunes – stating their case with a nice degree of power, then breaking out with really searching, soulful solos – beautifully blown material that we'd rank right up there with any of our favorite older classics. The set list is great too – filled with well-chosen tunes that give the album the solidity of a Blue Note date from the 60s – titles that include "Barbara", "Happy Times", "When We Were One", "The Last Score", "Friday Night At The Cadillac Club", "Song For The Early Worm", and "Silent Majority". We have never been sure if this comp was to be derided for not including some more interesting punk bands from the lower east side, or if all the really great ones already had contracts with other labels anyway. Besides, now that the venerable punk landmark is long gone, this early document provides an interesting perspective on a remarkable time. The music here runs the gamut from seminal new wave, to pretty dumb bar rock, but there's more than a few nuggets of great 70s guitar swagger too. 8 groups in all, with 16 tracks, including "Head Over Heels", "Slash" and "All For The Love Of Rock And Roll" by the Tuff Darts, "Operetico", "AVM" and "Poe" by the Shirts, "Cadillac Moon", "Change It Comes" and "Let Me Dream If I Want To" by Mink Deville, "Over, Under, Sideways, Down" and "I'm Rellay Not this Way" by Manster, "We Deliver" by the Miamis, "I Need A Million" and "It Feels Alright Tonight" by the Laughing Dogs, "Romance" by Sun, and "Everybody's Depraved" by Stuart's Hammer. An incredible companion to the book Enjoy The Experience – and like that volume, a set that's filled with gems from the obscure sides of the American recording industry – vanity and privately pressed records that are plenty darn groovy, and pretty darn funky in all the right spots! ✨✧ Heitkotter (Stephen David Heitkotter)Black Orckid (aka Heitkotter – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Now Again, Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Raw, rumbling outsider psych from Stephen David Heitkotter – a wild and raucous stream of rambling genius from the early 70s! There's a loose, bluesy approach at the core – with long songs and a disquieting, yet engrossing mood that makes the set one of the most compelling lost rock records of the early 70s. This amazing set of Cali bedroom psych (literally – it was recorded in a bedroom) has built up a deservedly lofty legacy in collectors circles, but it's also something of a mystery – which is what makes this Now Again issue such a treasure. The whole package has been very well researched, and long unanswered questions about Heitkotter and the recording(s) are answered at long last – in a solid booklet of of notes by Eothen Alapatt with rare photos, and an even rawer batch of bonus material. Titles include "Hangin All Night", "I Don't Mind", "Quaker Dog Got Away", "Cadillac Woman" and "Fly Over The Moon" – plus 6 more untitled tracks/demos. Amazing! CD
(A really beautifully done version from Now Again – which comes in thick, hardcover booklet – with bonus tracks.)

✨✧ Nino RotaFellini Soundtracks (Early Movies/La Strada/Notti Di Cabiria/La Dolce Vita/8 1/2) (5CD set) ... CD
DOL (Russia), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 5CD ... Out Of Stock
5CDs, and a set of great soundtracks to early films by director Federico Fellini – music that forever set the standard for a new generation of film composers! First up is La Strada – the brilliant mid 50s filled that starred a young Giulettia Masini as one of the saddest clowns ever to grace the silver screen – an amazing performance supported here by key early work from Nino Rota. Rota's score is a mix of circus-like themes and darker moments – all delivered with a dynamic energy that's really wonderful – almost leaping out of the speakers at some points, then sliding into shimmering, watery depths at others. Titles include "Il Pranzo Di Nozze", "Tema Della Strada", "Gelsomina", "Il Bambino Malato", "Zampano Abbandona Gelsomina", and "Addio Del Matto". Next is Le Notti Di Cabiria – aka Nights Of Cabiria – a film of similar vintage, with an equally wonderful score by Rota! The music's a bit more lush this time around – fuller orchestrations at times, but always with that ear for an isolated melody amidst the larger body – that sense of personality that makes Rota's soundtracks so great. Titles include "Picnic Al Divino Amore", "L'Illusionista", "Il Trasloco", "Aspettando Giorgio", and "Le Notti Di Cabiria". La Dolce Vita is one of the all-time classic Italian film scores – a groundbreaking soundtrack from Nino Rota, and one of the first Italian works of this nature to hit the record racks in the US! The music is a beautiful blend of whimsy and sadness – penned by Rota with a variety of light themes that dance together with a dreamy sort of quality – romantic one minute, dramatic the next – always handled with Nino's inventive sense of musical play! A delight throughout – with titles that include "La Doce Vita", "Cadillac", "Via Veneto", "Titoli Di Testa", and "Valzer". 8 1/2 is beautiful work by Nino Rota – filled with the kind of classic themes that distinguished his best work for Fellini. Carlo Savina conducted, and he does an excellent job with Rota's ideas – crafting them into short little packets of sound, woven tightly into little balls that pass back and forth as the mood of the film changes, in a similar mode to the scoring for La Dolce Vita. Titles include "Cadillac", "Cimitero", "Discesa Ai Fanghi", "La Passerella D'Addio", "Concertino Alle Terme", and "E Poi". Last up is a special soundtrack – featuring works from very early films by Fellini – including Il Bidone, I Vitelloni, Un Agenzia Matrimoniale, Lo Sceicco Bianco, and La Grande Seduzione. CD

✨✧ Dwight YoakamGuitars Cadillacs Etc Etc ... LP
Reprise, 1986. Very Good+ ... $24.99
The legendary debut of Dwight Yoakam – a honky tonk classic delivered with inimitable swagger! It's not only one of the finest country albums of its decade, we'd honestly rank Guitars Cadillacs Etc Etc up there with best country albums ever. Really! The mid 80s isn't one of the best remembered eras in country music – even hardscrabble heroes like Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson were fumbling around for the right balance of traditionalism and modernism at the dawn of the CD era – so there's no overstating what a huge breath of fresh air Yoakam was at time. He pays heartfelt homage to roots rock and honky tonk tradition, but he honed his craft in the LA club scene of the early 80s, giving his way with a classic sound an edge like no others at the time. A masterpiece. Titles include "South Of Cincinnati", "Bury Me", "Guitars Cadillacs", his killer version of Cash's "Ring Of Fire", "I'll Be Gone", "Miner's Prayer" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

The mid 90s instant classic! Outkast's debut set hem up as one of the most distinctive hip hop duos ever, right out of the gate, but it also helped to established the freewheeling, funky dirty south sound, thanks to genius Organized Noize production! The Outkast sound would get bigger and more wildly eclectic on the records to follow Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik, but the consistent, funky southern swagger on this one holds up incredibly well. It sounds fresh to this day! JR BaileyJust Me & You ... LP
MAM/Be With (UK), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
A really sublime rare groover from JR Bailey – vocalist in the Cadillacs back in their doo wop years, but a heck of a great 70s mellow soul artist in this obscure little set! JR wrote and co-produced all the tunes on the set – in a mode that steps along beautifully with a subtle groove at the bottom, but takes off with complicated touches in the backings, and some vocals from Bailey that really stand out from most of his contemporaries. There's echoes here of other 70s great like Donny Hathaway, Leroy Hutson, or Al Johnson – and like all those artists, JR's drawing a fair bit of jazz into his work – making for complicated changes and warmer overtones that really help take the record way past conventional soul. Arrangements are by Bailey with Bert De Coteaux, Ken Williams, Paull Griffin, and Horace Ott – and titles include "Love Love Love", "Cute As A Button", "After Hours", "Heaven On Earth", "She Called Me", "Everything I Want I See In You", and "Not Too Long Ago". Studio Confession, 2007. New Copy ... $11.99 13.99
One of the most soulful albums we've ever heard from Peven Everett – and that's saying a heck of a lot, given the depth of his work so far! The album's one of Peven's most song-based, vocally-strong efforts – an instant classic batch of tunes that show a tremendous evolution in his songwriting – an ability to tighten things up, give them more focus, and hit an even higher level than before! The vocals alone are tremendous – Peven singing right up front in the mix, with a style that's personal and positive – supported by flowing keyboards, and rhythms that are more soul-oriented than some of his other house-styled work. Titles include "Flowers & Candy", "Soon", "I Got It", "Sweetness Is", "Liquor Stores & Cadillacs", "True Love", and "What's Your Favorite Dance". CD
