Billy PaulFeelin' Good At The Cadillac Club ... CD
Gamble/Big Break (UK), 1968. New Copy ... $7.99 13.99
An excellent early album from Billy Paul – done in a mode that's quite different than his bigger hits of the 70s! The record's almost more of a jazz outing, but with a definite soulful twist – done in this righteous mode that's not unlike some of the best Nina Simone material from the same time – in a way that really shows some of the deeper strains in Billy's style. Billy's singing with a small piano trio, and his voice is rich and soulful in a way that you don't always get on his later recordings – quite powerful even with limited backings, at a level that really blows us away. The set's nearly all covers, but Billy's interpretations are fantastic, and he turns the tracks into something completely different than you're used to – in the same way that Nina Simone and Isaac Hayes were doing at the time with contemporary hits. Tracks include "Bluesette", "That's Life", "Feelin' Good", "Just In Time", and the Kenny Gamble original, "Missing You". CD

✨✧ John PrinePink Cadillac ... LP
Asylum, 1979. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
John Prine's got a slightly more stylish look on the cover here, and the record's got a slightly more stylish sound as well – production by Knox and Jerry Phillips (sons of Sun Records' Sam Phillips) – who set up Prine's amazing vocals and songs with a bit of a Tennessee vibe – not really country rock, as the album's very much John's own – but a slightly different feel than his previous work. There's also a slight touch of the Sun Records history here – guitar from Billy Lee Riley on one cut, and a few tunes that aren't Prine's own – but the whole thing still comes together at a level that's right up there with his best 70s classics. Tracks include "Chinatown", "Automobile", "Killing The Blues", "Saigon", "Cold War", "Side Of The Road", "How Lucky", and a remake of "Ubangi Stomp". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Dizzy GillespieSwing Low, Sweet Cadillac ... CD
Impulse, 1967. Used ... Out Of Stock
A brilliant album of Latiny grooves from Diz! The disc takes off from the soulful/modal mood of the early 60s groups with Lalo Schifrin and Kenny Barron – and features a young Mike Longo crafting some fantastic lines on piano, stretched out over tight rhythms on electric bass and drums, with Dizzy soloing on trumpet, and James Moody adding in washes of color and emotion on alto, tenor, and flute. The best tracks are long groovers that really show the group stretching out – especially on the album's 16 minute reading of Dizzy's classic "Kush", the title track "Swing Low Sweet Cadillac", and a great version of "Mas Que Nada"! Johnny Dyani With Witchdoctor's Son & Dudu PukwanaRejoice/Together ... CD
Cadillac (UK), 1978/1979. New Copy 2 CDs ... $14.99 18.99
A pair of albums from the legendary Johnny Dyani – packaged here in one great little set! Rejoice features searing live work from Johnny Dyani – a set that has the bassist opening up strongly in a trio with Mongezi Feza on trumpet and Okey Temiz on drums and percussion! Feza sounds even better here than usual – blowing these long, inventive solo lines that match the work of Ted Curson for 70s fire – really spurred on by Okey's creative changes, into a soulful space that may well be some of Mongezi's most spiritually expressive of the 70s! Dyani's bass is strong, and ever-present – never needing to dominate, but always felt as this rich pulse – and powerful melodic element at just the right moments. Titles include "Mad High", "Makaya Makaya", "Pukwana" and "Imbomgolo". CD also features an unreleased track from the same performance – the 20 minute "Mad High Revisited". Together is a record that really gets back to Johnny Dyani's roots in South African jazz! Although Dyani and his expatriates in the Blue Notes helped give London a new sound of avant jazz expression in the 70s, the music here returns to the warmer melodic style of their early 60s days – with loping rhythms that draw on regional tradition, and soulful interplay between the alto of Dudu Pukwana, tenor of Peter Shimmy Radise, and keyboards from Dyani – who shifts his instrument for this special recording! The group also features use of guitar, congas, whistles, and a South American harp – used in rhythmic ways that pulsate warmly – on titles that include "Kalahari", "Tula Tula", "High Priest", "Johnny's Kwela", and "Together". Joe HarriottJoe Harriott Swings High ... CD
Cadillac (UK), 1967. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A fantastic lost slice of work by one of the greatest modern jazz forces on the British jazz scene of the 60s – Jamaican-born saxophonist Joe Harriott, known for his groundbreaking avant jazz sessions and his experiments with Indian classical music! The sound here is quite different than those two better-known aspects of Harriott's career – and represents a return to the hardbop style he was using in the late 50s, when first making waves on the London scene. However, that's not a bad thing at all – as the album's overflowing with modern jazz undercurrents, and almost has a fresh post-Mingus approach to the horn parts and rhythm progressions. The quintet includes trumpeter Stu Hamer, drummer Phil Seaman, bassist Coleridge Goode, and pianist Pat Smythe – all well-suited players for Harriott in such a mode, and working here in a style that recalls the first great moments of British jazz from the late 50s. Titles include "Strollin South", "Just Goofin", "Time For Love", "The Rake", "Blues In C", and "Tuesday Morning Swing". CD

Jazz Doctors (Billy Bang/Frank Lowe)Intensive Care ... LP
Cadillac (UK), 1984. New Copy (reissue)... $27.99 32.99
Forget the hokey pun in the title, as the album's a sharp-edged set that has way more going on than that bad wit might imply – a brilliant record that has the same sort of post-loft vibe as some of the best Black Saint/Soul Note sessions from the time! The group here features players who worked on many of those records too – the mighty Billy Bang on violin, sounding incredible, and so different than generations of others touching that instrument in jazz – sharp, soulful, and almost "blown" more like a saxophone! Frank Lowe's tenor follows with a similarly bold voice – and the group features very urgent work on bass from Rafael Garrett and drums from Dennis Charles. Titles include great readings of Jackie McLean's "Little Melonae" and Ornette Coleman's "Lonely Woman" – plus the tracks "Loweology", "Ballad With One L", and "Blood On The Cross". Dudu PukwanaNight Time Is The Right Time – 60s Soho Sounds ... CD
Cadillac (UK), 1967/1968. New Copy ... $11.99 15.99
A completely unique slide of work from Dudu Pukwana – a side of the reedman you may never have heard before! Dudu's best known for his work in the Blue Notes – that legendary avant assemblage of South African players – and although he's also recorded in other creative settings, this may well be the first time we've heard him on a soul jazz session – burning brightly with some killer Hammond from organist Bob Stuckey! The combo's tight and right on the money – grooving live at Ronnie Scotts with the feel of some Prestige Records sax/organ group of the mid 60s – a real change for Dudu, but one we really love! Pukwana still puts in lots of unusual edges in his music – some odd tones and unusual shifts that really keep things interesting – especially giving the group's use of mostly original compositions, most by Dudu! Titles include "Jauana's Dream", "Messengers", "Kicks For Sale", "B My Dear", "Moonshine", "Kippie", and "Blessing Light". Plus, the CD features 5 more tracks by a trio that features Stuckey on Hammond and Terry Smith on guitar – "I Feel Pretty", "All Of You", "When I Grow Too Old To Dream", "Bob's Hop", and "Sweet Georgia Brown". An album that really lives up to its title – as the set bristles with upbeat, joyous energy throughout – in a fantastic criss-crossing of players from different global scenes, all cooking together in the cultural hotbed of 70s London! The record's got some echoes of the Brotherhood Of Breath work by Chris McGregor also issued by the Cadillac label – and also features ties to some of the musicians from the South African scene – but the group's also got a youthful energy that really makes the whole thing soar – fantastic bass from Ernest Mothle, killer piano from Frank Roberts, and tight drums from Keith Bailey – topped with trumpet from Jim Dvorak and alto from Chris Francis – both mighty nice players! Some tracks have a great pulsating groove – and titles include "PM", "Tribute", "Hidden Spirits", "Martini Suite", and "Spirals". CD

Cadillac (UK), 2021. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A quartet of improvising greats, coming together hear beautifully – with lots of sharp tenor work from Evan Parker, alongside the drums of Paul Lytton, bass of John Edwards, and piano of Alexander Hawkins! Parker is sometimes very deft, sometimes more in the textural territory of his more spacious improvisations – and at points, he's able to fold the two together beautifully – always seeming to direct the proceedings of the entire group, although it's clear that each player brings a fair bit of their own energy to bear in the proceedings. The bass of Edwards might be one of the most important elements – sometimes a bit more understated than the others, but in a way that really provides some glue for the whole thing – on titles that include "The Alchemy Of John Edwards", "A Well Staring At The Sky", "The Influence Of The Dog Star", "Art Is A Science", "A Blazing Star Or Comet Appeared", and "The Weather Set In Hot". Cadillac (UK), 1974. New Copy 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Two rare performances from the same evening of music in 1974 – one issued briefly on the album Stan Tracey Alone, one appearing here for the first time ever! CD1 features that Tracey album – an extended solo improvisation titled "Eighty One Plus One", which has Stan really stretching out at this key point in his career – that moment when he'd moved past his more angular, Monkish modes of the 60s – into territory that was much freer, and even more captivating – as Tracey always plays with this sense of timing that holds things together, even as his hands are soaring to the farther reaches of the piano! CD 2 features a duet with alto saxophonist Mike Osborne – also from the same night, and as one extended improvisation titled "Two Part Intention" – which has Tracey building up these layers of sound on piano, while Osborne glides freely over the top in a style that's both modern and soulful at the same time. Great stuff – and a much-needed example of this key moment in British jazz! CD

A really wonderful overview of sounds from the contemporary jazz scene in Finland – put together with a fantastic ear for the heady grooves and really fresh solo modes that have been bristling up on the scene of late – all of which really come together in the impeccable track selection on the set! Most of these tracks have a highly rhythmic pulse, but at a level that's very different from more familiar jazz funk or fusion – with percussion and basslines that are often nice and earthy, and a very different sense of timing that further makes the tracks stand out! Groups and instrumentation vary in a nice way throughout the collection, and the whole thing is the sort of set that will have you soon digging deeper to unlock some of the best sounds from this overlooked scene. Titles include "Dark Sparkle" by JAF Trio, "En Ut" by UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra, "Bilawal" by Superposition, "Imprologue" by Kari Ikonen, "Zigenerskan" by Emma Salokoski Ilmiliekki, "Niin On Kehto Tyhjilaan" by Hot Heroes & Iro Haarla, and "Garag" by Riitta Paakki. MCA/London (France), 1984. New Copy 2CD ... $19.99 23.99
The stunning debut of The Bronski Beat – a record that was one of a number of key releases in a bit wave of UK electro pop in the early 80s – but one that also really stood apart from the rest in the way it managed to mix its personal politics with its grooves! The fantastic Jimmy Somerville is in the group here on vocals – a much soulful singer than some of his contemporaries, with a vibe that links the queer politics of the record back to an earlier disco generation – while also using all the right elements to make for an 80s electo vibe that helped get these tunes in front of many ears that never would have expected such content! The backings are great too – with almost a ZZT love of warmer samples next to contemporary electronics – further enhancing some of the soulful aspects of the set. Titles include the classic "Smalltown Boy", plus "Screaming", "No More War", "Love & Money", "I Feel Love", "Heatwave", "Junk", "Need A Man Blues", "Why", and "It Ain't Necessarily So". Bear Family (Germany), Late 1940s/Early 1950s. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Killer postwar work from the great Roy Brown – one of the giants in the new groove of R&B at the time, and an artist who really helped pave the way for later rock and soul music as well! Roy's got a groove that's every bit as hard and heavy as King Records labelmate Wynonie Harris – raw, unbridled, and pushing the vocals and rhythms a lot more than jump blues material of the time – so much so that it feels like every instrument in the combo is coming down on the beat, while Brown's leaping forward in front of the groove with his bold, brash approach to the lyrics! Most numbers here are from Roy's years on King, but there's a few other titles in the mix as well – presented with the great sound and detailed notes we love from Bear Family – in a set list that includes 30 tracks in all, with titles that include "Train Time Blues", "Mr Hound Dog's In Town", "Cadillac Baby", "Bar Room Blues", "Letter From Home", "Rocking All The Time", "Gal From Kokomo", "Riding High", "Hip Shakin Baby", and the classic "Butcher Pete" – which some folks might know from the Fallout video game. Record Kicks (Italy), 2019. New Copy ... $5.99 15.98
Tina Charles has plenty of gumption – just the right kind of persistence that's going to make her a soul singer to watch in years to come! Charles starts out in the territory of a female vocalist working with a funk band – but she also brings a lot more to her music than just straight support of retro modes – a richness that partly comes from her willingness to experiment a bit more with the overall sound, which often includes tweaks on older funk or soul modes – while her own vocals still get strong play right down the middle! The record has a great way of collapsing the space between decades, but without making things feel slavish at all – and all tunes are Charles originals, with titles that include "Dans Les Nuages", "Cool Scorpio", "Love Overdue", "Going Home", "Upside Down", "Cadillac Moon", and "Look At Us Now". One of the standout Dizzy Gillespie albums of the 50s – a record that perfectly sums up all the new energy that Diz had picked up in the generation – delivered in an album that really shows the trumpeter at the top of his talents! Gillespie was one of the key founders of bebop in the late 40s, but the following decade had him emerge into so many other roles – working in larger bands, acting as a statesman, and really opening his ear for new rhythms – which is definitely the case in this set! The lineup is great – and features some key later work from Chano Pozo on congas, alongside Junior Mance on piano, Les Spann on flute and guitar, Sam Jones on bass, and Lex Humphries on drums – all players who are able to effortlessly shift and adapt to Dizzy's inspirations. Not the famous Verve Records pairing of Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker – but instead a more obscure live date from 1947, but one that really lets you hear the genius that happens when both players take the stage! The tunes have this approach that really hits at the most creative side of bop at the time – maybe even more open, expressive, and filled with larger ideas than some of the early singles that were coming out in 1947 – in a way that makes the whole thing a really important document of the complexity that was in the music, right from the start. The pair really stretch out on a fantastic two part reading of "Night In Tunisia (parts 1 & 2)", then soar through "Groovin High (parts 1 & 2)", "Confirmation", and "Dizzy Atmosphere". Hot ChocolateRemixes & Rarities (3CD set) ... CD
Cherry Pop (UK), Late 70s. New Copy 3CD ... $16.99 24.99
A wonderful collection of work from the legendary Hot Chocolate – one of the greatest British pop bands of the 70s – and one with a unique sound that was equal parts rock, funk, and soul! Lead singer Erroll Brown is pictured on the cover – and his unique vocal approach is what really makes most of these songs so great – especially matched with the group's talent for a snapping midtempo rhythm, and fuzzy guitar that seems to be a funky evolution from the glam generation! This set's kind of a "better than best of" – in that it's full of hits from the group, but often in these varied mixes, some of which were done a decade after the recording – as a way of keeping the group's legacy going strong over in the UK – mixed with some other lesser-known tracks that are really great too. 3CD set features 36 tracks in all – with songs that include "So You Win Again", "West End Of Park Lane", "The Girl Is A Fox", "I've Got You On My Mind", "Gimme Some Of Your Lovin", "Bed Games", "It's My Birthday", "Night To Remember", and "Robot Love" – plus remixes/alternates that include "Every 1's A Winner (12" version)", "Going Through The Motions (12" version)", "Mindless Boogie (ext version)", "You'll Never Be So Wrong (12" mix)", "Every 1's a Winner (ext groove mix)", "Heartache No 9 (ext rmx)", "You Sexy Thing (ext replay mix)", "No Doubt About It (tequila mix)", "You Sexy Thing (winner 12" mix", "Are You Getting Enough Happiness (12" promo)", "You Sexy Thing (Ben Liebrand rmx)", "Heaven Is In The Backseat Of My Cadillac (DD convertible mix)", and even a long "Megamix" of hits! Bear Family (Germany), 1940s/1950s/1960s. New Copy ... $13.99 18.99
Three decades of work from the legendary Bob Wills – all brought together in a set that really blows away most other compilations of his music! The vibe here is great – tracks that move past the bigger hits and the more conventional western swing numbers that Wills helped pioneer from the late 30s onwards – tunes that still have plenty of the charm that made Bob and his group so great, but which also really shows the way he opened up in the postwar years, especially as he moved into recording for a number of different labels! The earliest track here is from 1939, the latest from 1969 – and as always with Bear Family, the notes and presentation are as great as the choice of cuts – a killer lineup of 30 numbers that includes "Don't Be Ashamed Of Your Age", "There's Not A Hundred Miles Left In Me", "Texas Drummer Boy", "Cadillac In Model A", "Hubbin It", "I Laugh When I Think How I Cried Over You", "Pray For The Lights To Go Out", "I Won't Be Back Tonight", "Yearning", "Twin Guitar Special", and "The Devil Ain't Lazy". Bear Family (Germany), Mid 1960s. New Copy ... $16.99 20.99
Not the music of Bob Dylan – but a great little set that shows just how much Dylan's influence spread amidst various channels of the music world of the mid 60s – so much so, that it left behind a whole host of unlikely acts picking up some of his sounds and styles – and using it to make some marvelous music of their own! There's definitely some folk artists in the mix here, bu the set expands out nicely to show just how much other aspects of rock, pop, and vocal music were influenced by Dylan's style – bits of protest here, a slight current of folk blues expression there – and plenty of open, honest, and playful lyrical touches throughout – all very well documented in the album's large booklet of notes. The set features 25 surprising tracks in all – and tunes include "These Are Not My People" by Billy Joe Royal, "Me & Mr Hohner" by Bobby Darin, "Long Black Cadillac" by Jackie Washington, "Feet First Baby" by Len Chandler, "Willie Jean" by David Crosby, "Men Of Good Fortune" by Lou Reed, "Persecution Smith" by Bob Seger, "Baby Let Me Follow You Down" by Boz Scaggs, "Black Betty" by Dino Valenti, "Vigilante Man" by Sammy Walker, "Everybody's Talking About The Young" by Leon Russell, "Don't You Wonder Where It's At" by Barry McGuire, "Next Year This Time" by Bubba Fowler, "Halloween Mary" by PF Sloan, and "You've Got To Be Kidding" by Dick Campbell. The second half of the set features some more live material, but just with Dizzy Gillespie in the lead, from 1953 – with Bill Graham on alto and baritone, plus a bit of vocals from Joe Carroll. Impulse, 2005. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An amazing reworking of the Impulse Records groove – and a fitting tribute to one of the hippest jazz labels ever! The set's got a depth and brilliance that goes far beyond all other remix projects of its type – with none of the easy tricks of the Verve Remix project, or the off-pace dancefloor styles of the Motown one. Instead, the producers here really stay in the range of the label's original soulful and spiritual approach to jazz – in a way that draws from the older work for inspiration, but remakes it with a sound that's often quite respectful of the original! One of the key factors of the set is the strength of the remixers – as most here have a clearly demonstrated love and understanding of the original work, and weren't just introduced to the records in the studio – so they're clearly working out of love and respect, and not just a quickie remix paycheck. Titles include "A Helluva Town (Sa Ra Go rmx)" by George Russell, "Mizrab (Prefuse 73 remix)" by Gabor Szabo, "Swing Low Sweet Cadillac (Gerardo Frisina rmx)" by Dizzy Gillespie, "At Night (Ravi Coltrane w/Julie Patton)" by John Coltrane, "Stolen Moments (Teflon Tel-Aviv rmx)" by Oliver Nelson, "Bamboo Flute Blues (Kid Koala rmx)" by Yusef Lateef, "Astral Traveling (Boozoo Bajou rmx)" by Pharoah Sanders, and "Attica Blues (Chief Xcel rmx)". A fantastic package of work – material that not only helped kick off the career of the legendary Howlin Wolf, but also the Memphis powerhouse Sun Records too! The material here was all cut in the Sun Studios right at the start of its famous run – material recorded by Sam Phillips long before Elvis, Johnny Cash, and Jerry Lee Lewis – at a time when he was deeply interested in the shifts taking place in southern blues at the time, and was willing to take a chance on the mighty talents of Howlin Wolf! Wolf was no newcomer to the scene, but hadn't gotten recorded much before – especially not at this level, which brings out qualities that really ignited a long stretch of important 50s sessions after Sun licensed a few key tracks to other labels before they got their own imprint up and running. ✨✧ Jesse JohnsonJesse Johnson's Revue/Shockadelica/Every Shade Of Love (2CD set with bonus tracks) ... CD
A&M/Robinsongs (UK), Mid 1980s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Three solo albums from Jesse Johnson – plus bonus tracks too! First up is Jesse Johnson's Revue – a killer solo debut from guitarist Jesse Johnson, who was easily one of the most driving forces in The Time after leader Morris Day – and an artist who can definitely stand strongly here on his own! With great basslines at the core, Jesse's definitely cutting a groove that's in the Prince side of the spectrum – yet he's also got a more understated vocal style, and a way of tying things to more mainstream R&B at points too – all of which really help him make his own mark with the album! Titles include "She Won't Let Me Go", "Be Your Man", "Can You Help Me", "She's A Doll", "Special Love", "Let's Have Some Fun", "I Want My Girl", and "Just Too Much". Next up is Shockadelica – an 80s funk classic from Jesse Johnson – one that features a title that was Jesse's own creation, even though Prince stole the term and recorded a song with the name for himself! Yet that hardly keeps the album from being a winner – as Johnson's very much at the top of his game here – maybe emerging as the third major star from the Minneapolis scene after Morris Day and Prince – working in a very guitar-heavy mode that reflects his command of the instrument, which maybe sets Jesse apart from the others in the way that Bootsy Collins set himself apart from the P-Funk empire with his solo work in the previous decade. Sly Stone makes a great guest appearance on the cut "Crazay" – and other cuts include "Change Your Mind", "She", "Black In America", "Burn You Up", "Do Yourself A Favor", and "A Better Way". Every Shade Of Love is the last solo album that Jesse Johnson cut on his own before returning to The Time – and a record that shows that he would have been a heck of a solo artist in the 90s had he kept on going in this direction! There's plenty of Twin Cities-inspired funk in the mix – fast-riffing basslines to match Jesse's guitar and pump on the vocals – on titles that include "Love Struck", "I'm The One", "Color Shock", "I'm Just Wanting You", and "Stop Look Listen". 2CD set features bonus tracks – including a duet with Stephanie Spruill on "Heart Too Hot To Hold" from The Breakfast Club soundtrack – and "Drive Yo Cadillac", "Love Struck (dance mix)", "Crazay (ext version)", and "She (rmx)". ✨✧ Nino RotaLa Dolce Vita ... LP
Sugar/Decca (Italy), 1961. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the all-time classic Italian film scores – a groundbreaking soundtrack from Nino Rota, and one of the first Italian works of this nature to hit the record racks in the US! The music is a beautiful blend of whimsy and sadness – penned by Rota with a variety of light themes that dance together with a dreamy sort of quality – romantic one minute, dramatic the next – always handled with Nino's inventive sense of musical play! Larger orchestrations come into play with smaller combo elements that evoke the new world of jazz and rock on the scene in Rome – and the whole thing is a musical delight throughout – with titles that include "La Dolce Vita", "Cadillac", "Via Veneto", "Titoli Di Testa", and "Valzer". 2LP set features 26 tracks in all – many more than the original record! ✨✧ Ben SidranLittle Kiss In The Night ... LP
Arista, 1978. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One of our all-time favorites from the great Ben Sidran – thanks to a strong dose of fusion in the mix! The grooves here are somehow a bit sharper than the few Sidran records before – with a quality that almost reminds us of Fantasy Records soul from the mid 70s, or some of the best jazz-tinged R&B sets of the time – all linked back nicely to Ben's rootsier elements from the start. As always, Sidran's got some really top-shelf musicians on board to help him find his groove – including Phil Woods on alto sax, Blue Mitchell on trumpet, and Arthur Adams on guitar – and arrangements on many numbers are by Mike Melvoin, who sounds even funkier here than we'd expect. There's a great instrumental on the set called "The Cadillac Kid", which has a nice hard fusion groove – and other cuts include "Face Your Fears", "Doing You", and "Moose The Mooch". ✨✧ Stony IslandStony Island ... LP
Stony Island, 1990s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A long-overdue full length album from Stony Island – a legendary Chicago hip hop act, but one who only gave the world some EP and single releases back in the day! Stony Island worked in the shadow of the bigger acts of the time – and they had a way of working between scenes that was really wonderful – maybe more in the spirit of some key east coast groups, but from the decade before. After all these years, it's great to have a record to remind us why we loved them so much back in the day – thanks to cuts that include "Slowly On The South Side", "Spiritual Soldiers", "Rattlesnake", "Tomahawk", "If I Had A Cadillac", "ESBE (bomber's mix)", and "Bboy Laundry". ✨✧ VariousLive At CBGB's – The Home Of Underground Rock ... LP
Atlantic, 1976. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A really unusual document of the legendary scene around CBGB's on the lower east side – one that gets at the great range of music that passed through the doors of the clubs, in addition to some of the better known punk acts who helped form its legend! The music here runs the gamut from seminal new wave to bar rock – and the choice of cuts is interesting, most likely culled together from acts who didn't have any sort of record label contract at the time. Titles include "Head Over Heels", "Slash" and "All For The Love Of Rock And Roll" by the Tuff Darts; "Operetico", "AVM" and "Poe" by the Shirts; "Cadillac Moon", "Change It Comes" and "Let Me Dream If I Want To" by Mink Deville; "Over, Under, Sideways, Down" and "I'm Really Not this Way" by Manster, "We Deliver" by the Miamis, "I Need A Million" and "It Feels Alright Tonight" by the Laughing Dogs, "Romance" by Sun, and "Everybody's Depraved" by Stuart's Hammer. ✨✧ Tanika CharlesGumption ... LP
Record Kicks (Italy), 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
✨✧ Little CaesarYour On The Hour Man – The Modern, Dolphin, & Downey Recordings 1952 to 1960 ... CD
Ace (UK), 1950s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Wonderful work from Harry "Little" Caesar – a singer who made some great R&B singles for the west coast scene in the 50s, but hardly ever got his due on the other side of the US! Harry's got a nicely rough edge in his vocals – a style that reminds us a lot of the best male singers at King, like Roy Brown or Wynonie Harris – and although Caesar's perhaps not as raw and raunchy as the latter, he often covers similar down-to-earth topics in his tunes – material that makes these sides a real joy to rediscover! As the title implies, the work here was recorded for a handful of different labels – Modern, Dolphin, and Downey – and together, the tunes paint a vivid picture of this under-discovered talent from LA – a picture that's expanded on nicely by Billy Vera's notes as well. CD features 26 tracks in all – including "Cadillac Baby", "Don't Mention The Blues", "Lying Woman", "Atomic Love", "Going Down To The River", "Move Me", "Personal Question", "Tried To Reason With You Baby", and "What Are They Laughing About" – plus numbers sung with The Turbans, including "The Nest Is Warm", "No No Cherry", and "Tick Tock A Woo". ✨✧ VariousMiami Sound – Rare Funk & Soul From Miami Florida 1967 to 1974 ... CD
Soul Jazz (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A much-needed look at the funky Miami scene of the late 60s and early 70s – the new powerhouse of southern soul, after the slowdown in the scenes in Memphis and Muscle Shoals! The Miami sound was harder, tighter, rawer, and faster than that of other southern outlets – based around a really strong ability to pick up a little riff, cook it up nicely, and create the perfect backdrop for sock-soul vocals. By the mid 70s, Miami was topping the charts with disco tunes that sprung out of this energy – but the tracks on this set are all heavy-hitters from the pre-disco years – kickass funky tunes that burn like a box full of rare funky 45s! The set's overflowing with gems – and titles include "You Got To Be A Man" by Helene Smith, "Cramp Your Style" by All The People, "Funky Cat" by James Knight & The Butler, "90% Of Me Is You" by Gwen McCrae, "Funky Me" by Timmy Thomas, "Funkadelic Sound" by Little Beaver, "Spanish Flyer" by Frank Williams & The Rocketeers, "Do It To Me One More Time" by Joey Gilmore, "A Woman Will Do Wrong" by Helene Smith, "You Got To Be A Man" by Frank Williams & The Rocketeers, "Fantasy World" by James Knight & The Butlers, "Cadillac Annie" by Clarence Reid, "Somebody Done Took My Baby & Gone" by Frank Williams & The Rocketeers, "I Get Lifted" by George McCrae, and "Don't Make The Good Girls Go Bad" by Della Humphrey. An amazing merging of modes from Big Krit – a set that somehow manages to hold onto his roots in southern hip hop, yet also reach to the skies with the kind of energy you might guess from the title and cover! ✨✧ Dwight YoakamGuitars Cadillacs Etc Etc ... CD
Reprise, 1986. Used ... Out Of Stock
The legendary debut of Dwight Yoakam – a honky tonk classic delivered with inimitable swagger! It's not only one of the finest country albums of its decade, we'd honestly rank Guitars Cadillacs Etc Etc up there with best country albums ever. Really! The mid 80s isn't one of the best remembered eras in country music – even hardscrabble heroes like Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson were fumbling around for the right balance of traditionalism and modernism at the dawn of the CD era – so there's no overstating what a huge breath of fresh air Yoakam was at time. He pays heartfelt homage to roots rock and honky tonk tradition, but he honed his craft in the LA club scene of the early 80s, giving his way with a classic sound an edge like no others at the time. A masterpiece. Titles include "South Of Cincinnati", "Bury Me", "Guitars Cadillacs", his killer version of Cash's "Ring Of Fire", "I'll Be Gone", "Miner's Prayer" and more. CD

If you know us at all, you'll know that we really love a well-themed compilation – and we're especially in love with the sort of collection like this – which can bring together all sorts of weird and unusual singles with the united spirit of a holiday theme! This collection is even cooler and groovier than some other Halloween compilations out there – as in addition to the monster rock and horror film trailers that usually show up, there's some surprising contributions from jazz vocalists, mainstream entertainers, and country artists – which make the whole thing an array of surprises all the way through! The notes and song selection are up there with the best from Bear Family – and titles include "Monster Gonzales" by Tommy Bruce & The Bruisers, "Vampira" by Bobby Bare, "Strollin Spooks" by Ken Nordine, "Dragonfly" by Tommy Dee & The Mellotones "Ghost Satellite" by Bob & Jerry, "Creature From Outer Space" by Sonny Day, "Ghost Trains" by Hank Snow, "The Monsters Hop" by Bert Convy, "Dead" by The Poets, "The Boogie Man" by The Cadillacs, "The Ghost Hop" by The Surfmen, "The Headless Horseman" by Kay Starr, and "Spooky" by George Barnes.
