Billy Jack WillsCadillac In Model A – Gonna Shake This Shack Tonight ... CD
MGM/Bear Family (Germany), Mid 50s. New Copy ... $13.99 18.99
An overdue collection of work from the very young brother of the great Bob Wills – an artist who recorded for the same MGM label as Bob in the 50s, but who made some very different music overall! Billy Jack is much more of a rocker than his brother – and the cuts here do a really good job of mixing up postwar hillbilly styles with some of the romping modes that were coming to the music from R&B – but also often offering up just a slight current of jazz in the instrumentation, almost as if the younger Wills were creating a hip take on the Texas dancehall sound of the previous generation, but pushing it much more towards rock and roll! Billy Jack recorded a number of singles for MGM in the 50s, but a good number of them weren't released at the time – and this may well be the first time we've seen so much of his work presented together, along with the usual great Bear Family notes and attention to detail. The set features 31 tracks in all – and titles include two takes of "Cadillac In Model A", plus "Crazy Man Crazy", "Kissin Bug Boogie", "I Don't Know", "Sugar Blues", "Hey Lula", "Out Of Gas", "Kentucky Means Paradise", "Troubles", "She's A Quarter Horse Type", "Dipsy Doodle", "Tobacco Chewing Boogie", "Hey Mr Mailman", "Teardrops From My Eyes", and "Mr Cotton Picker". Impulse, 1967. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A brilliant album of Latiny grooves from Diz! The disc takes off from the soulful/modal mood of the early 60s groups with Lalo Schifrin and Kenny Barron – and features a young Mike Longo crafting some fantastic lines on piano, stretched out over tight rhythms on electric bass and drums, with Dizzy soloing on trumpet, and James Moody adding in washes of color and emotion on alto, tenor, and flute. The best tracks are long groovers that really show the group stretching out – especially on the album's 16 minute reading of Dizzy's classic "Kush", the title track "Swing Low Sweet Cadillac", and a great version of "Mas Que Nada"! ✨✧ Lou DonaldsonScorpion – Live At The Cadillac Club ... CD
Blue Note (UK), 1970. Used ... Out Of Stock
Rare work from funky Lou – unreleased for years! This is an excellent live set that was recorded in 1970, when Lou was at the height of his Blue Note powers, and working with a group that included Idris Muhammad (drums), Melvin Sparks (guitar), and Leon Spencer (organ). Recorded live at the Cadillac Club in Newark, New Jersey, this set's a perfect document of what a funky lounge gig was like in the era of the organ/tenor combos. The group swings hard and funky, with a sound that's like their best Blue Note recordings, and the track list includes "Peepin", "The Scorpion", "Alligator Boogaloo", and "Footpattin' Time". CD

Johnny Dyani With Witchdoctor's Son & Dudu PukwanaRejoice/Together ... CD
Cadillac (UK), 1978/1979. New Copy 2 CDs ... $16.99 18.99
A pair of albums from the legendary Johnny Dyani – packaged here in one great little set! Rejoice features searing live work from Johnny Dyani – a set that has the bassist opening up strongly in a trio with Mongezi Feza on trumpet and Okey Temiz on drums and percussion! Feza sounds even better here than usual – blowing these long, inventive solo lines that match the work of Ted Curson for 70s fire – really spurred on by Okey's creative changes, into a soulful space that may well be some of Mongezi's most spiritually expressive of the 70s! Dyani's bass is strong, and ever-present – never needing to dominate, but always felt as this rich pulse – and powerful melodic element at just the right moments. Titles include "Mad High", "Makaya Makaya", "Pukwana" and "Imbomgolo". CD also features an unreleased track from the same performance – the 20 minute "Mad High Revisited". Together is a record that really gets back to Johnny Dyani's roots in South African jazz! Although Dyani and his expatriates in the Blue Notes helped give London a new sound of avant jazz expression in the 70s, the music here returns to the warmer melodic style of their early 60s days – with loping rhythms that draw on regional tradition, and soulful interplay between the alto of Dudu Pukwana, tenor of Peter Shimmy Radise, and keyboards from Dyani – who shifts his instrument for this special recording! The group also features use of guitar, congas, whistles, and a South American harp – used in rhythmic ways that pulsate warmly – on titles that include "Kalahari", "Tula Tula", "High Priest", "Johnny's Kwela", and "Together". Joe HarriottJoe Harriott Swings High ... CD
Cadillac (UK), 1967. New Copy ... $14.99
A fantastic lost slice of work by one of the greatest modern jazz forces on the British jazz scene of the 60s – Jamaican-born saxophonist Joe Harriott, known for his groundbreaking avant jazz sessions and his experiments with Indian classical music! The sound here is quite different than those two better-known aspects of Harriott's career – and represents a return to the hardbop style he was using in the late 50s, when first making waves on the London scene. However, that's not a bad thing at all – as the album's overflowing with modern jazz undercurrents, and almost has a fresh post-Mingus approach to the horn parts and rhythm progressions. The quintet includes trumpeter Stu Hamer, drummer Phil Seaman, bassist Coleridge Goode, and pianist Pat Smythe – all well-suited players for Harriott in such a mode, and working here in a style that recalls the first great moments of British jazz from the late 50s. Titles include "Strollin South", "Just Goofin", "Time For Love", "The Rake", "Blues In C", and "Tuesday Morning Swing". CD

David MurrayLondon Concert ... CD
Cadillac (UK), 1978. New Copy 2CDs ... $16.99 18.99
A tremendous early recording from David Murray – recorded in London (as you'd guess by the title), but with all the best spirit of his early loft jazz sides! There's a tightness here that's missing from some of Murray's other albums of the period – a sense of soulful, spiritual swing that only seems to make the album open up even more, and which allows for some incredibly rhythmic solo work from Murray. We love this one to death, and would easily rank it as one of our favorite David Murray recordings ever – and would also say that the album's noteworthy for some great work from Butch Morris on cornet and Curtis Clark on piano – working in a quintet with Brian Smith on bass and Clifford Jarvis on drums. Titles include "Jas Van", "Secret Of The Circle", "Murray's Steps", and "Cancion De Amor En Espanol" – and the CD also features 2 bonus tracks – "Nairobi" and "Flowers For Albert". CD

Mike Osborne with Harry Miller & Tony LevinBirmingham Jazz Concert ... CD
Cadillac (UK), 1976. New Copy 2CD ... $14.99 18.99
Unreleased genius from British altoist Mike Osborne – and a set that easily matches his classic albums of the 70s! The double-length set was recorded live in the mid 70s, and is issued here for the first time – a wonderfully tight trio outing that features Osborne's alto alongside the bass of Harry Miller and drums of Tony Levin – in a mode that's decidedly Coltrane-influenced, and which has a searching, spiritual quality that's even deeper than most other British work of the time! We've never heard Osborne play with so much feeling, and Miller's basswork is wonderful too – really underscoring the sound with a full, rich quality that grounds the whole proceedings nicely – a soaring, majestic energy that's a far cry from some of the unstructured freedom from other Brit groups of the same stretch. Tremendous throughout – and with cuts that include "One For George", "Alfie", "Almost Home Kathy", "More Mike", "Ossie's Opener", "Awakening Spirit", and "Cousin Mary". CD

Dudu PukwanaNight Time Is The Right Time – 60s Soho Sounds ... CD
Cadillac (UK), 1967/1968. New Copy ... $14.99 15.99
A completely unique slide of work from Dudu Pukwana – a side of the reedman you may never have heard before! Dudu's best known for his work in the Blue Notes – that legendary avant assemblage of South African players – and although he's also recorded in other creative settings, this may well be the first time we've heard him on a soul jazz session – burning brightly with some killer Hammond from organist Bob Stuckey! The combo's tight and right on the money – grooving live at Ronnie Scotts with the feel of some Prestige Records sax/organ group of the mid 60s – a real change for Dudu, but one we really love! Pukwana still puts in lots of unusual edges in his music – some odd tones and unusual shifts that really keep things interesting – especially giving the group's use of mostly original compositions, most by Dudu! Titles include "Jauana's Dream", "Messengers", "Kicks For Sale", "B My Dear", "Moonshine", "Kippie", and "Blessing Light". Plus, the CD features 5 more tracks by a trio that features Stuckey on Hammond and Terry Smith on guitar – "I Feel Pretty", "All Of You", "When I Grow Too Old To Dream", "Bob's Hop", and "Sweet Georgia Brown". Stan TraceyFor Heaven's Sake ... CD
Cadillac (UK), 1995. New Copy ... $14.99 15.99
The first recording from British piano legend Stan Tracey's "New Quartet" – a group that pairs Tracey and son Clark Tracey with younger players Andrew Cleyndert on bass and Gerard Presencer on trumpet. Tracey's piano is as filled with fresh chords and tones as it ever was, but the sound here is thankfully more inside than on some of his freer recordings of the 70s and 80s – a strong straight jazz vision that still has enough sharper edges to appeal to fans of the British modern jazz sound of years past. There's an especially great chromatic side to the record that we really love – blocks of color and sound that shift in mood as the set moves on, and which make for a far richer recording than we would have expected. Titles include "Blah De Blah De Blah", "Light Blue", "All Of You", "For Heaven's Sake", "The Dolphin", and "Only Child". CD

Stan TraceySolo/Trio ... CD
Cadillac (UK), 1997. New Copy ... $14.99 15.99
A great example of the never-faltering genius of British piano legend Stan Tracey – a series of solo and trio recordings from 1997, recorded after Tracey had passed his 70th year, but was still going strong with an extremely fresh voice on the piano! The solo tracks here are almost even more compelling than the trio ones – never as far out or free as his 70s solo work, but with that undeniable sense of timing that always made his approach to the keys one of the most striking piano styles of the 20th century. The trio features son Clark Tracey on drums and Andrew Cleyndert on bass – and five of the CD's eleven tracks are solo numbers. Titles include "What's New", "NO Blues", "Angel Eyes", "Lover's Freeway", "Bye-ya", "Ask Me Now", and "It Could Happen To You". CD

Stan Tracey with Mike OsborneAlone & Together – Live At Wigmore Hall 1974 ... CD
Cadillac (UK), 1974. New Copy 2 CDs ... $16.99 18.99
Two rare performances from the same evening of music in 1974 – one issued briefly on the album Stan Tracey Alone, one appearing here for the first time ever! CD1 features that Tracey album – an extended solo improvisation titled "Eighty One Plus One", which has Stan really stretching out at this key point in his career – that moment when he'd moved past his more angular, Monkish modes of the 60s – into territory that was much freer, and even more captivating – as Tracey always plays with this sense of timing that holds things together, even as his hands are soaring to the farther reaches of the piano! CD 2 features a duet with alto saxophonist Mike Osborne – also from the same night, and as one extended improvisation titled "Two Part Intention" – which has Tracey building up these layers of sound on piano, while Osborne glides freely over the top in a style that's both modern and soulful at the same time. Great stuff – and a much-needed example of this key moment in British jazz! CD

Bobby Wellins QuartetDon't Worry 'Bout Me ... CD
Cadillac (UK), 1996. New Copy ... $14.99 16.99
A lovely little set from British tenorist Bobby Wellins – the kind of overlooked gem that we love to discover! Wellins is playing live here with a quartet – in a style that reminds us of some of our favorite Stan Getz albums from the later years – soulfully blown tenor firmly in the lead, working through often-familiar numbers, but somehow expanding them magically through a sense of imagination and lyrical beauty that can only be heard to be believed. We've heard Wellins before, but honestly this album is far greater than we might have expected – the kind of record that makes you say "why the heck isn't this guy one of the better known jazz players in the world – he's great!" Titles include "I'm Wishing", "I Concentrate On You", "Tracery", "Don't Worry Bout Me", "Lover Man", and "In Your Own Sweet Way". CD

A really wonderful overview of sounds from the contemporary jazz scene in Finland – put together with a fantastic ear for the heady grooves and really fresh solo modes that have been bristling up on the scene of late – all of which really come together in the impeccable track selection on the set! Most of these tracks have a highly rhythmic pulse, but at a level that's very different from more familiar jazz funk or fusion – with percussion and basslines that are often nice and earthy, and a very different sense of timing that further makes the tracks stand out! There's a pivotal feel to the record that's wonderful – really informing the explosion of sounds on Westbrook's late 60s albums, as he uses both older jazz compositions and his own great work – to make a pastiche of modes and modern moments that really blows us away – served up by a lineup that includes Mike Osborne and John Surman on saxes, Malcolm Griffiths and Paul Rutherford on trombones, Dave Holdsworth on piano, Harry Miller on bass, and Alan Jackson on drums – with Westbrook leading the group on piano. A straight-up incredible batch of recordings by the Austin singer-songwriter ghost of a legend that is Blaze Foley – a self-destructive character better known to the stars he influenced than he is to the masses (he is the "Drunken Angel" who Lucinda Williams wrote and sang about) – material from the mid-to-late 70s when he was billed as Deputy Dawg and put together here for one of the best compilations on Fat Possum in years! What makes this set so wonderful is the cohesive flow of it. It's solo folk country material recorded in a trio of intimate sessions from February of '76, November of that same year, and September of '78. Plaintive in presentation, with a passion that both soars to the heavens and plunges the depths. Bruised and totally beautiful! Blue Jack Jazz/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 2002. New Copy ... $9.99
An excellent group that really lives up to their name – a very soulful quintet, with a groove that's right up there with the best hardbop of the late 50s and early 60s! The ensemble's led by Dutch pianist Cees Slinger, but it features some especially strong work from the hornmen – tenorist Simon Rigter and trumpeter Ruud Bruels, who've got a great way of coming together on the start of the tunes – stating their case with a nice degree of power, then breaking out with really searching, soulful solos – beautifully blown material that we'd rank right up there with any of our favorite older classics. The set list is great too – filled with well-chosen tunes that give the album the solidity of a Blue Note date from the 60s – titles that include "Barbara", "Happy Times", "When We Were One", "The Last Score", "Friday Night At The Cadillac Club", "Song For The Early Worm", and "Silent Majority". Bo Diddley rocks – and heck, these early recordings practically helped invent the genre of rock and roll – and still have a heck of a lot more staying power than some of the music of his contemporaries! Right from the start, it was impossible to put Bo Diddley in a simple category – as his raw, ragged guitar riffs were a thing unto themselves – as was the fast-moving rhythms of his tunes, and the mix of wit and boldness that often colored the lyrics of his tunes! All that magic is perfectly captured here in a set that features 28 of some of the most hard-wailing early Bo Diddley numbers – presented with the top-shelf package we love from Bear Family, on titles that include "Say Boss Man", "Who Do You Love", "I Can Tell", "She's Alright", "I Am Looking For A Woman", "Dearest Darling", "Gun Slinger", "Hey Bo Diddley", "Ride On Josephine", "Pretty Thing", "Diddley Daddy", "Bring It To Jerome", "Pills", "Cadillac", "Willie & Lillie", "Mona", and "Down Home Special". An incredible companion to the book Enjoy The Experience – and like that volume, a set that's filled with gems from the obscure sides of the American recording industry – vanity and privately pressed records that are plenty darn groovy, and pretty darn funky in all the right spots! The book is a painstakingly researched collection – and this soundtrack is just as carefully put together – with a great range of styles – heavily steeped in freaky funk, upbeat boogie, acid folk, offbeat psych, and trippy jazz! The range of sounds is really wonderful – with a feel that's somewhere between a Trunk Records or Finders Keepers compilation – and titles include "Intro (Excerpt)" by The Muzzy Band, "Spacing Out" by The Invaders, Diska Limba Man" by Medico Doktor Vibes, "Music Slave" by Jade, "White Panther" by Arcesia, "Never Come Back" by Boa, "ESP Switch" by Michael Farneti, "6.4 = Makeout" by Gary Wilson, "Just To Say Goodbye" by Russ Saul, "Cadillac Woman" by Stephen David Heitkotter, "Piledriver" by Dennis The Fox, "Old Time Feeling" by Circuit Rider, and "666" by Ray Torske. ✨✧ Ben SidranFree In America/Doctor Is In/Little Kiss In The Night/Live At Montreux ... CD
BGO (UK), Late 70s. New Copy 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Four albums from the great Ben Sidran – a mighty hip jazz singer, and a great pianist too! First up is Free In America – a great little set all the way through – and about as classic as you can get for Sidran in the 70s! The album's got a bit more soul in the mix, but still has some jazzy elements in the backings – and where things were sometimes messed up in the past, they're much more straightforward here – in ways that make the record really sparkle nicely! Ben's voice is still really compelling, and as on his best albums, there's some nice funky grooves in the mix that keep things fresh. Players include Phil Upchurch on bass and guitar, Woody Shaw on trumpet, David Newman and Sonny Seals on saxes, and Richard Tee on organ. Titles include the great instrumental "Let's Make A Deal" – a fast groover with guitar and keyboards riffing away, sounding like some lost jazz funk gem from the Fantasy Records catalog – plus "Beg For It", "Cuban Connection", "Free In America", "New York State Of Mind", and "Feel Your Groove". Doctor Is In is one of Ben Sidran's biggest records from the 70s – a smooth combination of jazz, fusion, soul, and a bit of New Orleans groove! There's still a very unique feel to Sidran's music here – a sense of personality that really makes the whole thing sparkle – and which keeps the record from sounding too much like anyone else. Grooves are a great mix of jazz and soul elements – in territory that certainly has a 70s LA sort of quality, but which never gets too poppy or commercial – thanks to Ben's vocals, and mostly small combo backings from players who include Phil Upchurch on bass, Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Larry Carlton on guitar, and Tony Williams on drums. Nick DeCaro adds in a bit of extra strings from time to time – and titles include "Silver's Serenade", "Charlie's Blues", "Be Nice", "Goodbye Porkpie Hat", "One Way Grave", and "See You On The Other Side". Little Kiss In The Night is one of our all-time favorites from the great Ben Sidran – thanks to a strong dose of fusion in the mix! The grooves here are somehow a bit sharper than the few Sidran records before – with a quality that almost reminds us of Fantasy Records soul from the mid 70s, or some of the best jazz-tinged R&B sets of the time – all linked back nicely to Ben's rootsier elements from the start. As always, Sidran's got some really top-shelf musicians on board to help him find his groove – including Phil Woods on alto sax, Blue Mitchell on trumpet, and Arthur Adams on guitar – and arrangements on many numbers are by Mike Melvoin, who sounds even funkier here than we'd expect. There's a great instrumental on the set called "The Cadillac Kid", which has a nice hard fusion groove – and other cuts include "Face Your Fears", "Doing You", and "Moose The Mooch". Live At Montreux is tightly funky work from Ben Sidran – thanks to a strong lineup of players, and the open-ended relaxed setting of Montreux! The tracks here are a bit longer than some of Ben's studio sides for the label at the time – and almost hearken back to the more open flow of his Blue Thumb years – with plenty of room not only for Sidran's great vocals, but also from instrumental contributions from Steve Khan on guitar, Mike Mainieri on vibes, and the Brecker Brothers on horns. Titles include "I Remember Clifford", "Eat It", "Song For A Sucker Like You", "Midnight Tango/Walking With The Blues", and "Come Together". CD

✨✧ Charlie Parker & Dizzy GillespieBird & Diz/Jazz At Massey Hall/Diz N Bird In Concert ... CD
Not Now (UK), Late 40s/Early 50s. Used 3 CDs ... Out Of Stock
3 albums on 3 CDs. First is Bird & Diz – a classic meeting of two giants from the early years of bop – altoist Charlie Parker and trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie – brought together here in a session that Norman Granz would later list as one of the truest realizations of his vision for recording jazz music! Parker's sharp lines are a great contrast to the robust horn work of Diz – and the players work here with a rhythm section that features Thelonious Monk on piano, Curley Russell on bass, and Buddy Rich on drums. Titles include "Relaxin With Lee", "Leap Frog", "Oscar For Treadwell", and "Mohawk". Next is Jazz At Massey Hall – a legendary concert recorded at Massey Hall in Toronto, with a previously-unmatched quintet of superstar bop players: Charlie Parker on alto, Dizzy Gillespie on trumpet, Bud Powell on piano, Charles Mingus on bass, and Max Roach on drums. The quintet runs down "Perdido", "Salt Peanuts", "All The Things You Are", "Wee", "Hot House" and "A Night In Tunisia". Also included is Diz 'N' Bird In Concert – not the famous Verve Records pairing of Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker – but instead a more obscure live date from 1947, but one that really lets you hear the genius that happens when both players take the stage! The tunes have this approach that really hits at the most creative side of bop at the time – maybe even more open, expressive, and filled with larger ideas than some of the early singles that were coming out in 1947 – in a way that makes the whole thing a really important document of the complexity that was in the music, right from the start. The pair really stretch out on a fantastic two part reading of "Night In Tunisia (parts 1 & 2)", then soar through "Groovin High (parts 1 & 2)", "Confirmation", and "Dizzy Atmosphere". The second half of the set features some more live material, but just with Dizzy Gillespie in the lead, from 1953 – with Bill Graham on alto and baritone, plus a bit of vocals from Joe Carroll. Titles include "Swing Low Sweet Cadillac" and "Tin Tin Deo". CD

An obscure set of harmony soul – recorded by a group who shared some of the nuttiness of 60s groups like The Olympics or The Marathons, kind of a post doowop style that was often infused with a bit of comedy, ala earlier groups like The Coasters or The Cadillacs. This set brings together 16 titles by the group, mostly lifted from their early 60s sessions for Warwick. Titles include "Bird Dog", "Copy Cat", "Nag", "Zoom Zoom Zoom", "Down The Road", "Crazy Bells", "Heartbreaking World", "Village Of Love", and "I Went To A Party". CD

✨✧ VariousDoo Wop Christmas ... CD
Rhino, 1950s. Used ... Out Of Stock
For some reason, doo wop groups loved to record Christmas tunes – possibly because early efforts by The Drifters and The Orioles became huge hits, but also because the dreamy sound of Christmas tunes, which were often touched with just the right degree of sorrow and longing, worked perfectly for a raw vocal harmony style. This set of 18 tracks is a wonderful batch of holiday tunes – way more interesting than your usual set of sleepers by Der Bingle, or ironic modern rockers. The tracks are actually pretty darn soulful throughout – with an approach to the music that was more than just a "cash in on the holidays" spirit, and with pretty darn great vocal stylings to fit the mood. Titles include "Christmas Long Ago" by The Echelons, "Just A Lonely Christmas" by The Moonglows, "Merry Christmas Darling" by The Uniques, "After New Year's Eve" by The Heartbeats, "Merry Merry Christmas Baby" by Margo Sylvia & The Tune Weavers, "It's Christmas Time" by The Five Keys, "Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer" by The Cadillacs, "Can This Be Christmas" by The Falcons, "White Christmas" by The Drifters, "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve" by The Orioles, and "It's Christmas Once Again" by Frankie Lymon. ✨✧ VariousRare Northern Soul Vol 2 ... CD
Rare Northern, 1960s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Like the first volume in this series, the compilation is a bit mis-named – as it doesn't really have much Northern Soul – but that's ok with us, because it's pretty darn great anyway! The real strength here is the compilation's assortment of great group material – loads of mellow harmony-styled tracks that run from late doo wop to 60s group soul – with many numbers in a laidback or midtempo mode. There's a total of 25 tracks in all, and titles include "Fool" by The Cadillacs, "This Gets To Me" by Pookie Hudson, "Money" by Popcorn Wylie & The Mohawks, "Party Time" by The Corsells, "Don't You Know" by The Westsiders, "Who Would Love A Man Like That" by Mabel Scott, "One Day I'll Show You" by The Radiants, "Goodbye Cruel Love" by Linda Griner, "I've Got A Girl" by Major Lance, and "I'm A Devil" by Elliott Small. The packaging's not great – but there's loads of excellent songs on the set! CD
(Note: CD appears to have been mastered from vinyl sources – and although printed professionally, it's a bit low-budget in terms of the packaging. CD may not play well on all players. Out of print.)
