Stelvio CiprianiScorticateli Vivi (Skin Em Alive) (with bonus tracks) ... CD
CAM/Chris' Soundtrack Corner (Germany), 1979. New Copy ... $22.99
Stelvio Cipriani at his funkiest – taking all the lessons learned from his slinky, erotic sounds of the early 70s – and turning them into a mix of sweet sounds with a great late 70s vibe! Some tracks are upbeat and almost have a clubby feel, others have a great slow-stepping approach to funk – and there's a few others that are moodier, mellower instrumentals – of the sort that Stelvio first rose to fame with – but often with as much acoustic elements and percussion as his usual sweet keyboard work! Titles include the previous single – "Chicago USA" and "Percussion Gun" – both very funky tracks with a similar theme – mixed with lots of other unreleased numbers, including "Spanish Nights In Black Satin", "Lyonesse", "Changing Face", "Chicago USA 2", The Predator", "Crazy Town", and a number of other tunes with variations on the title "Scorticateli Vivi". Guido & Maurizio DeAngelisZorro (with bonus tracks) ... CD
CAM/Digitmovies (Italy), 1975. New Copy ... $18.99
A groovy take on the Zorro sound of yore – put together by Guido and Maurizio De Angelis for a hip 70s version of the character! The style here mixes some older Italian western modes with touches of "Mexican" instrumentation to set the scene – but there's also a brighter approach to production that definitely lets you hear some of the 70s elements in the music, too. The leadoff cut "Zorro Is Back" is a very groovy number with vocals in English by The Silver Onions – and other titles include "Huerta's Chase", "Ortensia's Capture", "The Governor's Son", "To You Mi Chica", and "Zorro & The Governor". CD features a whopping 18 bonus tracks, too! CD

Lee Konitz & Martial SolalEuropean Episode ... LP
CAM (Italy), 1968. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $14.99
Pretty modern work from Konitz – recorded in Rome in 1968, with a French rhythm section of Martial Solal on piano, Henry Texier on bass, and Daniel Humair on drums. The presence of Solal especially gives the session an edge – as Kontiz drifts into Solal's moody, introspective mode of the time – playing long, angular, sparely-hung solos that rank with some of his most challenging work of the 60s. Titles include "Collage On Standards", "Duet For Saxophone & Drums, & Piano", "Anthropology", "Roman Blues", and "Lover Man". LP, Vinyl record album
(Japanese gatefold pressing – very nice, with insert! Cover has some light wear.)

Bruce Lee/John BarryGame Of Death ... LP
Tam/CAM (Japan), Early 70s. Very Good+ ... $19.99
A very nice score to this prime Bruce Lee film – and a lot cooler than usual for John Barry! The score is a mix of orchestral and funky bits – but even the orchestral moments have some great effects and sounds in them, and the funkier stuff has a great 70s cop show sort of feel. The main theme has these nice "bew-bew" electronic sounds, and it also includes sound effects in one version. Other nice cuts include "Will This Be The Song I'll Be Singing Tomorrow", "Final Justice", and the wild "Face Off", which is really just sound effects from a kung fu fight! Hiiiiiiiii-ya! ✨✧ Ennio MorriconeGrazie Zia ... LP
CAM/Transversales Disques (France), 1968. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99
A really amazing soundtrack from Ennio Morricone – presented here with the full range of tracks for the first time ever! The music uses some wonderful vocals – sung in a style that's pop, but very creepy too – that way that Morricone vocals can have of being almost chant-like, and sort of satanic! Biance Di Renata Cortiglioni is the singer, and she's much more word-based than Edda Dell'Orso – and it appears that her vocals are overdubbed to create this cool sort of chorus effect – one that only makes the whole thing sound even creepier! In addition to the snapping rhythms of the vocal tunes, there's also some nice sprightly elements on the instrumental cuts too – not upbeat or funky, but an offbeat way that's got a jaunty snare for propulsion. Titles include "Fratello Biondo", "Guerra E Pace Polle E Brace", "Amore Col Cuore", and "Grazie Zia". LP, Vinyl record album

Nora OrlandiIl Diario Proibito Di Fanny ... CD
CAM/Quartet (Spain), 1969. New Copy ... $24.99
Some of the grooviest film music we've ever heard from Nora Orlandi – a nicely varied set of tracks done for a late 60s film that features four different sexual adventures! Given the story shifts, there's also a mood shift in the music – upbeat and jazzy at some points, mellow and slinky at others – themes that move between comedic and serious sounds, but always with a creative, playful instrumental approach! There's loads of great sonic surprises throughout – and each different tune has a core element that really wins us over – a chime on one cut, a wordless female vocal on another, a jazz solo, accordion, etc. CD features 25 tracks in all – 23 of which have never been issued before – as the only previous release was the 45rpm tracks "Fanny E Michel" and "Il Diario Proibito". ✨✧ Piero PiccioniLa Citta Prigioniera (with bonus tracks) ... CD
CAM/Digitmovies (Italy), 1962. New Copy ... $18.99
A relatively early dramatic score from Piero Piccioni – yet one that also really shows his ongoing talent for scoring the urban landscape! The film is set in Athens during WWII, and Piccioni scores the scenes with this very melancholy style that indicates the unsure sense of victory at the moment – sometimes tentative in structure, with elements that hold back and blossom slowly – other times more brooding and turgid, as if lying in wait for greater action to take place! Titles include "Tema Di Una Conzione", "Campo Lungo", "Citta Prigioniera", "Variazione", "Pedalissimo", and "Climax". CD also features a whopping 22 bonus tracks added to the original album – all previously unissued! CD

Carlo SavinaUltime Grida Dalla Savana ... LP
CAM (Italy), 1974. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $24.99
Lively sounds from Ultime Grida Dalla Savana – a 70s exploitation film that continued the "wild world" tradition of films like those in the Mondo Cane series! The setting here is the African savanna, but the music is mostly orchestral – a combination of driving themes that are right out of the sound library generation, mixed with other numbers that are maybe a bit more sensitive, in a soundtrack sort of style. Yet the lively numbers really dominate – and although we've never seen the film, the use of sprightly strings, bubbling electric bass, and even some wordless whistling must have been a great contrast to some of the images on the screen. Titles include "Questa Grande Terra", "Holland & Holland", "L'Armadillo", "Morgan Il Cacciatore", "Morte Di Un Animale", "Orango In Liberta", "Ragazzi In Festa", "Festa Paesana", and "Gli Struzzi". Carlo Savina & Aldemaro RomeroSimon Bolivar (with bonus tracks) ... CD
CAM/Digitmovies (Italy), 1969. New Copy ... $18.99
Carlo Savina penned the score for this film about the great liberator of Venezuela – and for the project, he also got a bit of help from that nation's groovy composer Aldemaro Romero! Romero's only credited with a few tracks on the record, but much of the music seems to borrow from his trademark style – especially the way of mixing rootsier elements with warmer 60s-styled modes – not familiar Latin or bossa rhythm, but something a bit more special. Savina also adds in a number of more dramatic moments too – as you might expect from his other work of the period, especially on famous western soundtracks. The CD features an insane number of bonus tracks – 21 more numbers, added to the 18 that originally appeared on the album issued by CAM! CD

Laurence Vanay (Jacqueline Thibault)Evening Colours (with bonus tracks) ... CD
CAM/Lion, 1976. New Copy ... $9.99
Amazing music from Laurance Vanay – actually a recording name for Jacqueline Thibault, a hell of a great keyboardist but an artist the label thought would be better off billed as a man! The sound here is halfway between the spacey experiments of Brian Eno and Cluster, and some of the more ambitious sound library work of the time – particularly those rare moments when prog artist got to do some studio work! Thibault's keyboards are wonderful – lots of Fender Rhodes mixed with Hammond and early synth – usually spun out at an instrumental level that has the tunes building slowly in these really great layers of sound – almost like a Popol Vuh soundtrack, but a lot more tuneful too. There's a fragile complexity that really makes the music special – and unlike anything we've ever heard from the European scene of the time – and titles include "Alone In The Rain", "Evening Colours", "Forgotten Moments", "Twin Cities", "Eyes Closed On The Way", "Sunshine In My Heart", and "Underwater Light Reflection". CD features a huge amount of bonus tracks – includign "Mamie"," Mop", and "Fausse Fn" – plus alternate takes of songs on the album. CD

✨✧ Enrico Pieranunzi/Marc Johnson/Joey BaronPlay Morricone ... CD
CAM (Italy), 2001. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great idea – jazz piano trio versions of Morricone soundtrack tunes, played here by Italian pianist Enrico Pieranunzi, with backing by Marc Johnson on bass and Joey Baron on drums. The team of Johnson and Baron have a perfect touch of lyricality to open these tunes up – taking lesser-known Morricone themes, and working them like jazz standards to show the depth of composition and possibilities available to the tunes. One of the great shames of Morricone's career is that he wrote so many darn great soundtracks that most of his tunes never got as much variation and acclaim as the work of other 60s soundtrack composers – and hopefully a set like this will begin to correct that! Titles include "Addio Fratello Crudele", "I Malamondo", "La Domenica Specialmente", "Mio Caro Dottor Grasler", "Ninfa Plebea", "Jona Che Visse Nella Balena", "Le Mani Sporche", "Quando Le Donne Avevano La Coda", "Il Prato", and "Just Beyond The Horizon". ✨✧ Carlo RustichelliStuntman ... LP
CAM/Spettro (Italy), 1968. Sealed Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A much more playful album than you'd guess from the action image on the cover – scored by Carlo Rustichelli with some of the best modes he used in 60s Italian comedies! The instrumentation is really great – a sly blend of jazzy and mod bits, often changing up within a single track – and stepping out with an upbeat, lively feel on most of the numbers – definitely the catchier, jazzier side of Italian 60s film scores! The whole thing's really great – a lot groovier than some of Rustichelli's more staid work from a few years before – and titles include "Two Cars Only", "Swing E Sesso", "Controfigura", "We're Two At Least", "Per Tutte Le Strade", and "Old Night Club Sound". ✨✧ Guido & Maurizio DeAngelisSavana Violenta (with bonus tracks) ... CD
CAM/Quartet (Spain), 1976. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A mighty 70s soundtrack from the duo of Guido & Maurizio DeAngelis – scored for a mondo film set in Africa, but done with a style that's often like some of their more familiar Italian material of the time! Action, drama, and comedy each get musical time in the spotlight – and the music often has larger orchestral passages that are nicely differentiated, based on the scenes captured by the exploitative documentary style of the film – which sometimes includes passages that were faked to create more drama on the screen! There's hardly any instrumentation that would reflect the setting of the movie at all – and instead, the DeAngelis brothers are more than happy to mix together bouncy rhythms, swirling strings, and even some playful chorus passages – on titles that include "Savanna", "Terremoto", "Carioca", "Subenda", "Anthem", "Let's Sing A Song", and "Elefanti Marini". CD features the original 15 track album – plus 24 more bonus tracks from the film, all previously unissued! CD

Beautiful work by Nino Rota – filled with the kind of classic themes that distinguished his best work for Fellini. Carlo Savina conducted, and he does an excellent job with Rota's ideas – crafting them into short little packets of sound, woven tightly into little balls that pass back and forth as the mood of the film changes, in a similar mode to the scoring for La Dolce Vita. This excellent 2CD version from Quartet has the complete film score on disc one – with 29 tracks in all. Disc two features the original 1963 soundtrack album plus 9 bonus tracks! 130 minutes of music! ✨✧ David HollanderUnusual Sounds – The Hidden History Of Library Music ... Book
Anthology Editions, 2018. New Copy ... $38.99 55.00
A fantastic look at the European sound library scene of the 60s and 70s – one that goes way past some of the simpler cover art books that have been around over the years – to offer up details on individual labels, histories of the music, and a great look at key musicians as well! Don't get us wrong, there's plenty of album covers here too – the book is heavy, with full color pages throughout – but author David Hollander really takes his subject matter seriously, and does a great job of providing historical detail on many important sound libraries big and small – including KPM, Conroy, Peer, Amphonic, Montparnasse 2000, Flipper, Cam, Omicron, Sonoton, and many more. In case you're not hip – sound libraries were companies that had their own studios, and let musicians make music on their own – which they would often then lease for use in films, TV, and commercials. Overseas, the libraries were filled with jazz, funk, and soundtrack musicians – which meant that the music was always unusual and surprisingly creative, even if it wasn't issued on commercial records. The book features bits on Klaus Weiss, Delia Derbyshire, Janko Nilovic, Jean Jacques Perry, Piero Umiliani, Daniela Casa, Keith Mansfield, Alan Hawkshaw, Madeline Bell, Alan Tew, Sven Libaek, and many other sound library artists – finally giving them their due! Over 300 pages, with lots of images throughout – including some great TV and cinema references too. Book

Bebel Gilberto eat your heart out – Antena explored the same electric-bossa territory you did, nearly 20 years before your first big record! The group were a short-lived French outfit who were one of the shining jewels in the crown of the lovely label Les Disques Du Crepuscule during the early 80s – and were a real breath of fresh air in the post-punk years with their light and jazzy approach to the groove. As you'll hear in this set, Antena's style borrows a lot from the bossa, but also throws in some wonderful poppish touches – including jangly guitars recorded in a similar mode to some of the other French/European indie groups of the time, and a slight darkness in production that almost gives a Martin Hannett-like undercurrent to the whole set. The group's album Camino Del Sol has been lovingly reissued with a great set of notes, as well as a series of bonus tracks from an additional ep – making for a beautiful 14 track package that will really help you rediscover this nearly-lost group! Modern Classics/Light In The Attic, Mid 80s. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $11.99 19.99
A great LP package that brings together the two important EP releases from Camberwell Now – that excellent group formed by Charles Hayward after the dissolution of This Heat! The first half of the set is from Meridian – the group's first effort, and a wonderful batch of music that kind of takes an earlier Brit prog sound into the post-punk years – a bit like some of Robert Wyatt's material of the time, as are the vocals – but with maybe more of the sense of sound and texture that you'd expect from Hayward! Overall, the music is far less rhythmic than his previous efforts – but that's what makes it great – almost a weirder abstraction of sounds you might hear on Factory Records. Titles include "Cutty Sark", "Trade Winds", "Splash", and "Pearl Divers". Greenfingers is the last recorded material from Camberwell Now – an EP released in 1987, but one with a sound that feels much more like the UK indie scene of 5 years before – especially that point when groups were breaking past straighter punk, and really trying to integrate some new ideas with their music. There's definitely a continuation of the Robert Wyatt vibe – on both the vocal performance, and some of the moodier electronics – and titles include "Greenfingers", "Element Unknown", "Know How", and "Mystery Of The Fence". LP, Vinyl record album
(Beautiful package – heavy cover with booklet, plus download with two bonus tracks!)

Owwwww! We don't even need to call Cameo a guilty pleasure, because even though they always fell more on the commercial side of funk, we've never been embarassed by our appreciation of their slick, in-your-face style. This excellent 2 CD set covers just about their entire career, from their harder funkier roots in the early days, with numbers like "Rigor Mortis", "Post Mortem" and "Funk Funk", to the wigged early 80s dancefloor numbers "Shake Your Pants", "Freaky Dancin", and "Keep It Hot", to their later, bass heavy radio numbers like "She's Strange", "Attack Me With Your Love" and "Candy". Not to be confused with the Funk Essentials version of this title – this one's a slightly more slimmed-down set, but one that's still filled with plenty of Cameo hits! The package veers more towards some of the later 80s grooves, but is still pretty nice overall – with plenty of funky soul tracks, including "I Care For You", "Flirt", "Shake Your Pants", "She's Strange", "I Just Want To Be", "The Rock", "Feel Me", "Keep It Hot", "Be Yourself", "I'll Always Stay", and "I Like It". CameoFeel Me ... CD
Chocolate City/Universal (Japan), 1980. New Copy ... $13.99
A great 80s groove from Cameo – but one that's still done in the group's best early funk ensemble mode! There's maybe a bit more emphasis on the basslines and keyboards than before, but the sound of the music is still wonderfully full and spontaneous – very much in keeping with the warmly collaborative look of the group on the cover, who really sound like they're having a hell of a lot of fun making the record! The rhythms have a razor-sharpness that just about nobody else can touch – and there's all these cool little instrumental flourishes that sneak into the mix and really keep things interesting – odd sounds on familiar instruments, moogy moments on keyboards, and even some vocal inflections that come as a nice surprise. There's two nice mellow cuts – "Feel Me" and "Is This The Way", which have a sweetly compressed harmony sound on the lyrics – and funky numbers include "Better Days", "Keep It Hot", "Roller Skates", and "Is This The Way". CameoWord Up! ... CD
Mercury (Japan), 1986. Used ... $1.99
A mid-80s classic from Cameo – one that showed the world that the group was still very much in the funky music game, even if their lineup had been reduced to a trio! Larry Blackmon's still at the head of the group – singing, drumming, and playing bass throughout – with plenty of support on keyboards and a variety of instruments from an army of session players called in for the record. The style's a bit less on the heavy funk tip of earlier Cameo records, but also steps along nicely in that mellower, midtempo groove that proved to be a great refuge for funk bands as the 80s wore on – a mode that's slightly romantic at times, but always handled with a bit of bounce at the bottom. Titles include "Word Up", "Candy", "She's Mine", "Don't Be Lonely", "Back & Forth", and "You Can Have The World". CD

The long-overdue issue of material that was originally recorded for the film Kes back in 1969 – short and lovely numbers arranged and composed by Brit easy talent John Cameron! Cameron's best known for his work in more groove-oriented formats – but this soundtrack is something completely different, and equally great – a set of spare and compelling tunes played by a small combo that includes British jazz players Harold McNair, Ronnie Ross, David Snell, Tony Carr, and Danny Moss. The overall album is quite short, but it features a stunning range of sounds, tones, and colors – with a strong focus especially on the flute work of McNair, easily one of the greatest London players of his generation, and sort of England's answer to Roland Kirk. Titles include "Billy's Paper Round", "Billy Sees Kes In The Tower", "Kes First Flight", "Training Kes", "Billy Asleep In The Boiler Room", "Burying Kes", and "Foreboding". LP, Vinyl record album

KPM/Be With (UK), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... About May 10, 2019 (delayed)
African rhythms, jazzy instrumentation, rock inspiration, and a motherlode of funky sound library grooves from two of the best British maestros working in the business! The album's an early 70s gem from the KPM catalog – one of the most sought-after records ever issued by the label – and like the rest, never really made for public sale back at the time! Despite that humble origin, though, the grooves here are right up there with the funkiest work coming out from that side of the Atlantic at the time – a brilliant post-colonial blend of acoustic percussion, electric keyboards, and a fair bit of fuzzy guitar – all presented with a stripped-down, no-nonsense approach to the rhythms that's often funkier than work by some of the bigger names in the genre. Titles include "Heavy Water", "Ice Breaker", "Solid Satin", "Punch Bowl", "Frozen Steam", and "Black Light" by Alan Parker – and "Swamp Fever", "Range Rover", "Survival", "Afro Waltz", "Heat Haze", "Rocking Rhino", and "Afro Metropolis" by John Cameron. Glen CampbellGlen Sings For The King ... CD
Capitol, Late 60s. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A fantastic lost slice of work from Glen Campbell – recorded in the studio during the years of his big initial fame in the 60s – but never issued to the public at all! Instead, these tracks were recorded for "The King" – that is, Elvis Presley – a bit like demos of tunes that the songwriters wanted Elvis to sing – but handled by Campbell in initial readings that sometimes echo the style of Presley, sometimes have Glen bringing more of his own spirit to the songs. All the titles were written by Sid Wayne and Ben Weisman – the latter of whom gave Elvis plenty of hits in the 60s – and the album's not just a great view at a lost slice of 60s rock, but also a fantastic testament to the diversity and strength of the young Glen Campbell working in LA. Titles include "Magic Fire", "I'll Be Back", "I Got Love", "Anyone Can Play", "Spinout", "Do The Clam", "Stay Away Joe", "Love On The Rocks", "Easy Come Easy Go", "How Can You Lose What You Never Had", and "All I Needed Was The Rain" – plus a rare duet with Elvis on "We Call On Him". Steeplechase (Netherlands), 1975. New Copy ... $15.99 18.98
A real gem of an album – the kind of spiritual 70s soul jazzer that we never tire of putting on the turntable! Drummer Michael Carvin heads a great group that features Cecil Bridgewater on trumpet, Sonny Fortune on alto and soprano, and Ron Burton on piano – and the ensemble grooves in a way that reminds us a lot more of recordings on Strata East from the time, than some of the snoozier sides on Steeplechase. The record fits nicely in with some of the few recordings of this nature on the label – work by Billy Gault and Rene McLean – and the album's worth it alone for Fortune's incredible post-Coltrane solos. Tracks include "The Camel", "MC Blues", "Kwebena's Blues", and "Osun". CD features a few bonus alternate takes, too. CD

A remake of the earlier Don Camillo film from the 50s – done here with music that's got an even more sprightly feel! You might know Pino Donaggio from darker, more serious soundtracks – but here, he uses a mix of keyboards and woodwinds to craft lots of groovy tunes that are in the best spirit of the 80s comedic Italian soundtrack modes! Given that Terence Hill was the lead, we can bet that there's a lot of goofy action on screen – set to tunes that include "Ring The Bells", "Verso Pomponesco", "Sfida A Carte", "I'm A Fool", "Don Camillo Parla Con Il Signore", and "Nella Chiesa". The flipside's got an echoey guitar line on "Camino Infernal" – almost surf-like – but mixed with lots more percussion, and relayed in a bit of distorted production – before "Phantom Weight" takes over, as more of a hard-driving bit of funk overall! 7-inch, Vinyl record

The first album recorded by singer Nkotti Francois and his Black Styls group – a combo who'd been backing Nkotti for years in clubs in Cameroon, and who work here with a very sharp sound right from the start! The instrumentation is often a bit unique – organ and guitar sometimes used with weird effects or unusual phrasing – mixed with strong basslines, and some occasional excellent tenor solos – which underscore the more soulful elements that are often brought to the record by the vocals of Francois! The singer is great, and the weird organ bits are equally nice – and very unique – on titles that include "Loko La Mboa", "O Mende Wele", "Ndola Njomba Bodi Mba Da Monjo Na Mbundo", "Natiki O Mundi Nwa Bato", "Bino Senga", and "Muboledi". Keith Mansfield/John CameronVoices In Harmony – KPM 1125 (180 gram pressing) ... LP
KPM/Be With (UK), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
One of the grooviest albums from the 70s KPM sound library – a set that features loads of upbeat vocal numbers in harmony, conducted by two of the swingingest cats to ever work for the label! Vocal material is a bit unusual in the KPM world – which usually focused on the kind of instrumental tunes that could easily be borrowed for use in films or broadcast – and in a way, that vibe is still followed here, as most of the material is wordless – with a scatting chorus of gal and guy singers working together, taking the place of the other instrumentation that might have been in the lead! At the bottom are plenty of funky rhythms and other sound library-styled grooves – bursting with the great energy you'd know from Cameron and Mansfield's other records – on titles that include "Half Forgotten Dreamdays", "Liquid Sunshine", "Fly Away", "Sweet Summer", "Ode To A Rock Opera", "Young Generation", "Play The Game", "Swingle Song", "Roller Coaster", and "Gentle Persuasion". Wes MontgomeryBack On Indiana Avenue – The Carroll DeCamp Recordings ... CD
Resonance, Late 50s. New Copy 2CD ... $22.99 24.99
Really fantastic early work from guitar genius Wes Montgomery – a series of live recordings from his Indianapolis roots – done at a level that's quite different than his bigger records of the 60s! Even at this early age, Wes is already a chromatic master – able to get sounds out of his guitar that are so different than most of his contemporaries – playing in a small combo mode on most tracks, but with less of the R&B influence than most postwar guitarists. Instead, Montgomery is pure jazz all the way through, but also without that too-clean tone that some folks were going for – just a great focus on color and open, honest tone – in the company of musicians who include Carl Perkins and Buddy Montgomery on piano, Mel Rhyne on Hammond, Monk Montgomery on bass, David Baker on trombone, and David Young on tenor. Those last two players only make a few appearances – as most groups are horn-less, which gives Wes even more solo space – on titles that include "Four", "Between The Devil & The Deep Blue Sea", "It's You Or No One", "Ecaroh", "Sandu", "Whisper Not", "Four On Six", "Mr Walker", "Round Midnight", "West Coast Blues", "Tune Up", "So What", and "The End Of A Love Affair". The keyed-strings quality that you usually get from mellotron isn't the biggest part of the sound – and instead, the instrument is used in more subtle ways – amidst funky and groovy instrumentals that also feature lots of organ, electric harpsichord, cello, vibes, and flute! There are occasional mod currents in the music – maybe like 80s El Records crafting a sound library set – and titles include "Mint Roadster", "Halogen Mist", "Five Wheels", "Carnaby Cathedral", "Puppet Shop", "Advantage Soho", "Dreams Of Persephone", and "Riviera". Jonah Parzen-JohnsonI Try To Remember Where I Came From ... CD
Clean Feed (Portugal), 2017. New Copy ... $9.99
A totally cool combination of musical elements – baritone sax and analog electronics – both played here by Jonah Parzen-Johnson with a style that's unlike anything else we can think of! Sure, saxes and electronics have come together before – ever since Richard Tietelbaum and Anthony Braxton first recorded together back in the 70s. But there's also a very different vibe here that comes both from the baritone, and its deeper sonic range – and the way that Jonah uses his electronics, sometimes with flutteringly rhythmic elements that really make the music shimmer, but without overwhelming it at all. He's also not afraid to blow straight and soulfully at times too – which is especially great when the electronics are more abstract – and throughout, the album's full of these revelatory moments that make the whole thing a delight. Titles include "These Shoulders Those Shoulders", "Cabin Pressure", "I Have Questions", "What Do I Do With Sorry", "Guns Make Us Murderers", and "Too Many Dreams". CD

John PattonAlong Came John ... LP
Blue Note, 1963. Very Good- ... $59.99
A really unusual album from the mighty Hammond giant John Patton – as the set features two tenor players in the group, both of them great! The tenor's no stranger to the sublime keyboard work of Patton – but here, the great one gets help from both Fred Jackson and Harold Vick – both of whom are at their early 60s soul jazz best, able to play with a hard edge, but also some surprisingly complicated moments too – which really fits into the spirit of Patton's overall groove! The group also features great guitar from Grant Green – one of his key pairings with the organist – plus drums from the wonderful Ben Dixon, who's got a fluid, open approach to rhythm that really works well with John's basslines from the Hammond. Titles include "Gee Gee", "Pig Foots", "Spiffy Diffy", "Along Came John", and the classic modal groover "The Silver Meter". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono New York pressing with Van Gelder stamp. Labels have some pen and an address sticker. Cover has an address sticker, some wear and aging, and masking tape on the bottom seam.)

✨✧ PersuasionsWe Came To Play ... LP
Capitol, Mid 70s. Near Mint- ... $2.99
A beautiful group soul vocals effort from the Persuasions in the early 70s – working in a throwback acapella mode, but still with a fresh feel – thanks to a hip dawn of the 70s sound, and a stripped-down feel that you'd probably have never gotten back in the day! It's amazing how fresh it sounds, even today – each individual voice captured with crystal clarity, and strong genuine emotion – with an honest and real sound that's not overly polished. Wonderful! Titles include "Chain Gang", "Walk On The Wild Side", "Gypsy Woman", "Another Night With The Boys", "Let It Be", "Don't It Make You Want To Go Home", and "The Sun". LP, Vinyl record album
(Red label pressing. Cover has a cutout hole and a light stain along the spine.)

PFMManticore Studio Albums (Photos Of Ghosts/World Became The World/Chocolate Kings/Jet Lag) (4CD set) ... CD
Manticore (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 4CD ... $29.99
A quartet of classics by PFM – an Italian prog act of the 70s, and one of the few to challenge the international reputation of British groups like Yes or Emerson Lake & Palmer – so much so, the latter group actually issued these albums on their own Manticore label! Like ELP, PFM have a way of sounding great when both instrumental and vocal – maybe even better in the former, with a perfect rock/fusion blend – and loads of great keyboards! The initial Photos Of Ghosts album is one of their real classics – but all other records are very well-remembered too – and the package also features the full albums The World Became The World, Chocolate Kings, and Jet Lag – all in mini-LP sleeves! Piero PiccioniCamille 2000 ... LP
Blind Faith (Italy), 1970. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
One of the coolest classics from the glory days of the Italian soundtrack scene – a set that perfectly brings together all the funky, jazz, and mod-styled touches of the great Piero Piccioni – on a record that's maybe had more life over the years than the film did on the screen! The mix of instruments here is completely sublime – with some especially wonderful use of Hammond, but with very offbeat sounds – next to flute, warmer woodwinds, and some wicked basslines that hit the hippest sort of funk soundtrack modes. The recording quality is amazing, too – with unusual isolation and shading used on the instruments, to further make the sound magic – and titles include "Funky Lovers", "Pearls", "Slow Flute Beat", "Charms", "Brasil 2000", "Tears In Brasil", "Camille 2000", and "Tears In Rome". One of our all-time favorites – and with some bonus alternate takes! LP, Vinyl record album

Johnny ShinesBlues Came Falling Down – Live 1973 ... CD
Nighthawk/Omnivore, 1973. New Copy ... $14.99 16.98
A never-issued live performance from the great Johnny Shines – best known for his work on the Chicago scene in the 50s, but heard here in a fantastic recording that was done in a St Louis chapel during the early 70s! The sound quality is amazing – and although most tracks just feature Shines on vocals and guitar, there's a clarity that's breathtaking – and which may well bring out subtle elements in Johnny's music that were never captured as well by some of his records on bigger labels. Three tracks features added guitar from Leroy Jodie Pierson, but most are solo – and titles include "Seems Like A Million Years", "Cold In Hand Blues", "Have You Ever Loved A Woman", "I'm A Steady Rollin Man", "They're Red Hot", "Ramblin", "Stay High All Day Long", and "It's Nobody's Fault But Mine". Paris Smith QuintetThought Seeds/Lilith Came ... 7-inch
Oracle/Jazzaggression (Finland), Mid 70s. Near Mint- (pic cover)... $9.99
Two amazing tracks from underground Chicago jazz legend Paris Smith – back to back on a limited 45! "Thought Seeds" is this amazing blend of vibes, alto sax, and haunting female vocals – a very righteous tune, and one with a spirit that's unlike anything else we can think of – dark, but vibrantly positive too – with a nice solo from Jimmy Ellis near the end! "Lilith Came" has never been on vinyl before – an overlooked gem from Paris CD-only release from the 90s – with more beautiful vibes, and a lyric that's as haunting as the title! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Sonics/SCAMFind Myself Another Girl/Spooky ... 7-inch
Big Crown, Late 60s. New Copy (reissue)... $8.99
Not the freaky fuzz you'd usually expect from a record issued under a Sonics name – as this cut's got more of a brown-eyed soul sort of style – with easygoing vocals, and a sweet organ line to underscore the blueness of the tune! "Spooky" is great too – a remake of the hit, but done as a tripped-out psych soul song with a very laidback vibe! 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Tower Of PowerWe Came To Play ... LP
Columbia, 1978. Very Good+ ... $14.99
Tight funky work from Tower of Power – produced here by Steve Cropper, but sounding a lot more like Average White Band than on earlier albums – with a great mix of mainstream funk and warmer, mellow cuts! The group takes advantage of the studio work to let the best funky sides of their instrumentation come to the forefront, and the record's got plenty of great keyboard and guitar riffing, and some well-miked drums that have a nice jazzy flourish on the best cuts. Vocals are a bit weak – but hey, once Lenny Williams left the group, what were they going to do? Titles include "We Came To Play", "Ying Yang Thang", "Let Me Touch You", "Share My Life", "Bittersweet Soul Music", and "Love Bug". LP, Vinyl record album

Pete TownshendWho Came First (2CD version – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Universal, 1972. New Copy 2 CDs ... $31.99 39.98
A fantastic first album from Pete Townshend – one that showed the world that he was a hell of a force to be reckoned with, even away from The Who! There's some elements here that link back to Pete's work with the band, but the music here is already showing lots of new ideas brewing in his solo space – some of the greater sensitivity of Townshend's solo voice – which might not always get showcased when Roger Daltrey was taking the lead – and also some different musical strands that might not have been right for The Who. Ronnie Lane takes the lead on "Evolution" – which you'll recognize from the world of The Faces – and other titles include the original acoustic version of "Pure & Easy", plus "Nothing Is Everything (Let's See Action)", "Time Is Passing", "Forever's No Time At All", "There's A Heartache Following Me", "Content", "Parvardigar", and "Sheraton Gibson". This expanded version comes in a cool book-size package, with added liner notes and new mastering. Also features 16 more bonus tracks that include "His Hands", "The Seeker (2017 edit)", "Sleeping Dog", "Day Of Silence", "Mary Jane (stage a)", "I Always Say (2017 edit)", "Begin The Beguine (2017 mix)", "Baby O'Riley (instrumental)", "The Love Man (stage c)", "Content (stage a)", "Parvardigar (alt take)", "There's A Fortune In Those Hills", "Meher Baby In Italy", "Nothing Is Everything (earlier take)", "Evolution (live)", and "Drowned (live in India)".
