Stelvio CiprianiFemina Ridens ... LP
CAM/Four Flies (Italy), 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
A wonderful soundtrack from Stelvio Cipriani – penned for this 1969 Italian thriller with psycho-sexual overtones, and done with music that has elements of both! At some points, Cipriani has all the erotic touches of his best early 70s work – but at others, he uses late 60s modes that evoke Morricone and Piero Umiliani, especially the latter's playful use of instrumentation in his more outlandish soundtracks! The music grows a bit more tense as the film moves on, but usually has a sense of lightness overall – and a number of tracks feature wordless vocals, sung either by Edda Dell'Orso or I Cantori Moderni. Titles include "Week End With Mary", "Love Symbol", "Hot Skin", "Chorus & Brass Fugato", "Rendezvous In The Castle", "Femina Ridens", "The Run In The Alley", and "The Shower". LP, Vinyl record album

Stelvio CiprianiScorticateli Vivi (Skin Em Alive) (with bonus tracks) ... CD
CAM/Chris' Soundtrack Corner (Germany), 1979. New Copy ... $22.99
Stelvio Cipriani at his funkiest – taking all the lessons learned from his slinky, erotic sounds of the early 70s – and turning them into a mix of sweet sounds with a great late 70s vibe! Some tracks are upbeat and almost have a clubby feel, others have a great slow-stepping approach to funk – and there's a few others that are moodier, mellower instrumentals – of the sort that Stelvio first rose to fame with – but often with as much acoustic elements and percussion as his usual sweet keyboard work! Titles include the previous single – "Chicago USA" and "Percussion Gun" – both very funky tracks with a similar theme – mixed with lots of other unreleased numbers, including "Spanish Nights In Black Satin", "Lyonesse", "Changing Face", "Chicago USA 2", The Predator", "Crazy Town", and a number of other tunes with variations on the title "Scorticateli Vivi". Guido & Maurizio DeAngelisZorro (with bonus tracks) ... CD
CAM/Digitmovies (Italy), 1975. New Copy ... $18.99
A groovy take on the Zorro sound of yore – put together by Guido and Maurizio De Angelis for a hip 70s version of the character! The style here mixes some older Italian western modes with touches of "Mexican" instrumentation to set the scene – but there's also a brighter approach to production that definitely lets you hear some of the 70s elements in the music, too. The leadoff cut "Zorro Is Back" is a very groovy number with vocals in English by The Silver Onions – and other titles include "Huerta's Chase", "Ortensia's Capture", "The Governor's Son", "To You Mi Chica", and "Zorro & The Governor". CD features a whopping 18 bonus tracks, too! CD

Francis LaiAnima Persa (with bonus tracks) ... CD
CAM/Digitmovies (Italy), 1976. New Copy ... $16.99
A moody little 70s soundtrack from French composer Francis Lai! The score has a softer, smoother sound than some of his 60s work – but it's still got that great penchant for romantic-tinged themes that he first began with A Man & A Woman, turned here into a 70s mode that has a bit more electric instrumentation, almost grooving in a mellow sex-styled mode that recalls the backings for some of France's breathier singers of the time. As with most of Lai's best work, there's some fantastic melodies on the tunes – and the production has this echoey edge that makes them come out even better on record than on paper! Titles include "Tino E Lucia", "Il Segreto", "Anima Persa", "Rivelazione E Finale", "Zia Elisa", "Lucia", and "L'Accademia". This CD features 6 great bonus tracks – more than the previous CD issue! Gianni MarchettiIl Magnifico Tony Carrera ... LP
CAM/Transversales Disques (France), 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
A great one from Gianni Marchetti – the Italian composer we know best for his work on The Wild Eye, but who sounds equally great on this set too! The best tracks have a heavy rhythm at the bottom – not really funky, but kind of mod, and a bit more off-kilter on the slower numbers – which makes for a really compelling sound, especially next to some of the set's unusual instrumental twists. A number of the tracks feature the vocal chorus 4+4, conducted by Nora Orlandi – and they sing in a sweet and moody style that nicely offsets the groovier work by Marchetti. Titles include "Psico Classico", "Amore In Controluce", and "Psico In Controluce" – done in a number of variations, including some which are previously unreleased! LP, Vinyl record album

Ennio MorriconeGrazie Zia ... LP
CAM/Transversales Disques (France), 1968. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99
A really amazing soundtrack from Ennio Morricone – presented here with the full range of tracks for the first time ever! The music uses some wonderful vocals – sung in a style that's pop, but very creepy too – that way that Morricone vocals can have of being almost chant-like, and sort of satanic! Biance Di Renata Cortiglioni is the singer, and she's much more word-based than Edda Dell'Orso – and it appears that her vocals are overdubbed to create this cool sort of chorus effect – one that only makes the whole thing sound even creepier! In addition to the snapping rhythms of the vocal tunes, there's also some nice sprightly elements on the instrumental cuts too – not upbeat or funky, but an offbeat way that's got a jaunty snare for propulsion. Titles include "Fratello Biondo", "Guerra E Pace Polle E Brace", "Amore Col Cuore", and "Grazie Zia". LP, Vinyl record album

Piero PiccioniLa Citta Prigioniera (with bonus tracks) ... CD
CAM/Digitmovies (Italy), 1962. New Copy ... $18.99
A relatively early dramatic score from Piero Piccioni – yet one that also really shows his ongoing talent for scoring the urban landscape! The film is set in Athens during WWII, and Piccioni scores the scenes with this very melancholy style that indicates the unsure sense of victory at the moment – sometimes tentative in structure, with elements that hold back and blossom slowly – other times more brooding and turgid, as if lying in wait for greater action to take place! Titles include "Tema Di Una Conzione", "Campo Lungo", "Citta Prigioniera", "Variazione", "Pedalissimo", and "Climax". CD also features a whopping 22 bonus tracks added to the original album – all previously unissued! CD

Carlo SavinaUltime Grida Dalla Savana ... LP
CAM (Italy), 1974. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $19.99
Lively sounds from Ultime Grida Dalla Savana – a 70s exploitation film that continued the "wild world" tradition of films like those in the Mondo Cane series! The setting here is the African savanna, but the music is mostly orchestral – a combination of driving themes that are right out of the sound library generation, mixed with other numbers that are maybe a bit more sensitive, in a soundtrack sort of style. Yet the lively numbers really dominate – and although we've never seen the film, the use of sprightly strings, bubbling electric bass, and even some wordless whistling must have been a great contrast to some of the images on the screen. Titles include "Questa Grande Terra", "Holland & Holland", "L'Armadillo", "Morgan Il Cacciatore", "Morte Di Un Animale", "Orango In Liberta", "Ragazzi In Festa", "Festa Paesana", and "Gli Struzzi". Carlo Savina & Aldemaro RomeroSimon Bolivar (with bonus tracks) ... CD
CAM/Digitmovies (Italy), 1969. New Copy ... $18.99
Carlo Savina penned the score for this film about the great liberator of Venezuela – and for the project, he also got a bit of help from that nation's groovy composer Aldemaro Romero! Romero's only credited with a few tracks on the record, but much of the music seems to borrow from his trademark style – especially the way of mixing rootsier elements with warmer 60s-styled modes – not familiar Latin or bossa rhythm, but something a bit more special. Savina also adds in a number of more dramatic moments too – as you might expect from his other work of the period, especially on famous western soundtracks. The CD features an insane number of bonus tracks – 21 more numbers, added to the 18 that originally appeared on the album issued by CAM! CD

Laurence Vanay (Jacqueline Thibault)Evening Colours (with bonus tracks) ... CD
CAM/Lion, 1976. New Copy ... $9.99
Amazing music from Laurance Vanay – actually a recording name for Jacqueline Thibault, a hell of a great keyboardist but an artist the label thought would be better off billed as a man! The sound here is halfway between the spacey experiments of Brian Eno and Cluster, and some of the more ambitious sound library work of the time – particularly those rare moments when prog artist got to do some studio work! Thibault's keyboards are wonderful – lots of Fender Rhodes mixed with Hammond and early synth – usually spun out at an instrumental level that has the tunes building slowly in these really great layers of sound – almost like a Popol Vuh soundtrack, but a lot more tuneful too. There's a fragile complexity that really makes the music special – and unlike anything we've ever heard from the European scene of the time – and titles include "Alone In The Rain", "Evening Colours", "Forgotten Moments", "Twin Cities", "Eyes Closed On The Way", "Sunshine In My Heart", and "Underwater Light Reflection". CD features a huge amount of bonus tracks – includign "Mamie"," Mop", and "Fausse Fn" – plus alternate takes of songs on the album. CD

The great title track to one of the best scores from Italian maestro Stelvio Cipriani – a tune that bursts out with funky drums that kick into soaring orchestrations, topped by this wicked female vocal from Olympia – whose singing style is as vibrant as the instrumentation! Edda Dell'Orso sings on "Sophisticated Shake" on the flipside – but in that weird breathy style that she used with Ennio Morricone – more voice as sound than as lyrics, next to a hip-stepping bass and cool echoey piano! 7-inch, Vinyl record

CAM/Quartet (Spain), 1969. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Some of the grooviest film music we've ever heard from Nora Orlandi – a nicely varied set of tracks done for a late 60s film that features four different sexual adventures! Given the story shifts, there's also a mood shift in the music – upbeat and jazzy at some points, mellow and slinky at others – themes that move between comedic and serious sounds, but always with a creative, playful instrumental approach! There's loads of great sonic surprises throughout – and each different tune has a core element that really wins us over – a chime on one cut, a wordless female vocal on another, a jazz solo, accordion, etc. CD features 25 tracks in all – 23 of which have never been issued before – as the only previous release was the 45rpm tracks "Fanny E Michel" and "Il Diario Proibito". ✨✧ David HollanderUnusual Sounds – The Hidden History Of Library Music ... Book
Anthology Editions, 2018. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic look at the European sound library scene of the 60s and 70s – one that goes way past some of the simpler cover art books that have been around over the years – to offer up details on individual labels, histories of the music, and a great look at key musicians as well! Don't get us wrong, there's plenty of album covers here too – the book is heavy, with full color pages throughout – but author David Hollander really takes his subject matter seriously, and does a great job of providing historical detail on many important sound libraries big and small – including KPM, Conroy, Peer, Amphonic, Montparnasse 2000, Flipper, Cam, Omicron, Sonoton, and many more. In case you're not hip – sound libraries were companies that had their own studios, and let musicians make music on their own – which they would often then lease for use in films, TV, and commercials. Overseas, the libraries were filled with jazz, funk, and soundtrack musicians – which meant that the music was always unusual and surprisingly creative, even if it wasn't issued on commercial records. The book features bits on Klaus Weiss, Delia Derbyshire, Janko Nilovic, Jean Jacques Perry, Piero Umiliani, Daniela Casa, Keith Mansfield, Alan Hawkshaw, Madeline Bell, Alan Tew, Sven Libaek, and many other sound library artists – finally giving them their due! Over 300 pages, with lots of images throughout – including some great TV and cinema references too. Book

AntenaCamino Del Sol ... LP
Numero, Early 80s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $23.99 25.99
Bebel Gilberto eat your heart out – Antena explored the same electric-bossa territory you did, nearly 20 years before your first big record! The group were a short-lived French outfit who were one of the shining jewels in the crown of the lovely label Les Disques Du Crepuscule during the early 80s – and were a real breath of fresh air in the post-punk years with their light and jazzy approach to the groove. As you'll hear in this set, Antena's style borrows a lot from the bossa, but also throws in some wonderful poppish touches – including jangly guitars recorded in a similar mode to some of the other French/European indie groups of the time, and a slight darkness in production that almost gives a Martin Hannett-like undercurrent to the whole set. The group's album Camino Del Sol has been lovingly reissued with a great set of notes, as well as a series of bonus tracks from an additional ep – making for a beautiful 14 track package that will really help you rediscover this nearly-lost group! Really fantastic sounds from Butcher Brown – a group who just seem to leap forward more and more with each new release – and who've really hit their groove with this well-recorded performance! The album was recorded live to disc in London – with a superb sound that only further emphasizes the sharp instrumentation that make these guys way more than just another funky combo – the fluid blend of heavy drums, warm keyboards, rich bass, and great interplay between guitar, trumpet, and occasional tenor – handled with the dexterity of a 70s jazz funk supergroup, but with all the lean energy of a funky 45! The tunes are all originals, all nice and long, and wonderfully soulful – and titles include "918", "Camden Square", "Street Pharmacy", and "Fiat". CD

Modern Classics/Light In The Attic, Mid 80s. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $11.99 19.99
A great LP package that brings together the two important EP releases from Camberwell Now – that excellent group formed by Charles Hayward after the dissolution of This Heat! The first half of the set is from Meridian – the group's first effort, and a wonderful batch of music that kind of takes an earlier Brit prog sound into the post-punk years – a bit like some of Robert Wyatt's material of the time, as are the vocals – but with maybe more of the sense of sound and texture that you'd expect from Hayward! Overall, the music is far less rhythmic than his previous efforts – but that's what makes it great – almost a weirder abstraction of sounds you might hear on Factory Records. Titles include "Cutty Sark", "Trade Winds", "Splash", and "Pearl Divers". Greenfingers is the last recorded material from Camberwell Now – an EP released in 1987, but one with a sound that feels much more like the UK indie scene of 5 years before – especially that point when groups were breaking past straighter punk, and really trying to integrate some new ideas with their music. There's definitely a continuation of the Robert Wyatt vibe – on both the vocal performance, and some of the moodier electronics – and titles include "Greenfingers", "Element Unknown", "Know How", and "Mystery Of The Fence". Polygram, Late 70s/Early 80s. Used ... $0.99
Not to be confused with the Funk Essentials version of this title – this one's a slightly more slimmed-down set, but one that's still filled with plenty of Cameo hits! The package veers more towards some of the later 80s grooves, but is still pretty nice overall – with plenty of funky soul tracks, including "I Care For You", "Flirt", "Shake Your Pants", "She's Strange", "I Just Want To Be", "The Rock", "Feel Me", "Keep It Hot", "Be Yourself", "I'll Always Stay", and "I Like It". CameoFeel Me ... CD
Chocolate City/Universal (Japan), 1980. New Copy ... $13.99
A great 80s groove from Cameo – but one that's still done in the group's best early funk ensemble mode! There's maybe a bit more emphasis on the basslines and keyboards than before, but the sound of the music is still wonderfully full and spontaneous – very much in keeping with the warmly collaborative look of the group on the cover, who really sound like they're having a hell of a lot of fun making the record! The rhythms have a razor-sharpness that just about nobody else can touch – and there's all these cool little instrumental flourishes that sneak into the mix and really keep things interesting – odd sounds on familiar instruments, moogy moments on keyboards, and even some vocal inflections that come as a nice surprise. There's two nice mellow cuts – "Feel Me" and "Is This The Way", which have a sweetly compressed harmony sound on the lyrics – and funky numbers include "Better Days", "Keep It Hot", "Roller Skates", and "Is This The Way". GC CameronGive Me Your Love ... CD
Malaco/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1983. New Copy ... $13.99
A wonderful later album from GC Cameron – a singer you might know best as the early lead in The Spinners – sounding quite different here in a Malaco Records setting! The album's got Cameron slow-stepping through some great mellow soul cuts – warm, sensuous tunes that work perfectly with his vocal approach – produced with just a few southern soul inflections by the team of Tommy Couch and Wolf Stevenson. The overall approach is light years from Detroit – and titles include "Let's Share", "Hearts & Flowers", "Give Me Your Love", "No Lovin Til Friday", "Love Trap", and "Night Like This In Georgia". CD

GC CameronLove Songs & Other Tragedies (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Motown/Soulmusic.com (UK), 1974. New Copy ... $6.99 14.99
A tremendous solo act from GC Cameron – a singer who first rose to fame in The Spinners, but who really sounds wonderful on his own! GC's moved away from The Spinners here – into a wide range of styles that show him ready to take on most of the rest of the competition! He's working here with the best of the best of Motown – production from Stevie Wonder and Willie Hutch – and arrangements by both, plus Paul Riser, Gene Page, James Carmichael, and Frank Wilson – all of whom really give their best to the record, and show that Motown was putting plenty of effort into making GC one of the next big stars of the 70s. We're not sure why things never took off as strongly for Cameron, but whatever the case, the album's a great step for the solo artist – on cuts that include "If You Don't Love Me", "Tippin", "All In Love Is Fair", "If You're Ever Gonna Love Me", "Come Get This Thang", "I'm Gonna Give You Respect", and "Let Me Down Easy". CD features an insane amount of bonus tracks – 13 more tracks that include "Act Like A Shotgun", "Girl I Really Love You", "I'm Gonna Get You (parts 1 & 2)", "Don't Wanna Play Pajama Games", "You Are That Special One", "Have I Lost You", "Time", "Topics", and "No Matter Where". KPM/Be With (UK), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
One of the crowning achievements of British arranger John Cameron – and perfectly titled too – given that John got his start in jazz, but also worked with plenty of British rock acts too – a legacy that comes together perfectly in this ultra-groovy set! The tunes are among some of Cameron's funkiest – and often feature heavy electric elements in the rhythms, topped by bold passages on horns – keyboards criss-crossing with saxes, basslines rumbling next to trumpets – all with a funky style that's right up there with the best of the American crime, cop, or blacksploitation soundtracks of the time! Titles include "Chicago Sidewalk", "Brass Monkey", "The Prowler", "Underlying Expectancy", "Smokey Joe's Dilemma", "The Great Escape", and "49th Street Shakedown". LP, Vinyl record album

Trunk (UK), 1969. New Copy ... $25.99
The long-overdue issue of material that was originally recorded for the film Kes back in 1969 – short and lovely numbers arranged and composed by Brit easy talent John Cameron! Cameron's best known for his work in more groove-oriented formats – but this soundtrack is something completely different, and equally great – a set of spare and compelling tunes played by a small combo that includes British jazz players Harold McNair, Ronnie Ross, David Snell, Tony Carr, and Danny Moss. The overall album is quite short, but it features a stunning range of sounds, tones, and colors – with a strong focus especially on the flute work of McNair, easily one of the greatest London players of his generation, and sort of England's answer to Roland Kirk. Titles include "Billy's Paper Round", "Billy Sees Kes In The Tower", "Kes First Flight", "Training Kes", "Billy Asleep In The Boiler Room", "Burying Kes", and "Foreboding". LP, Vinyl record album

KPM/Be With (UK), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
African rhythms, jazzy instrumentation, rock inspiration, and a motherlode of funky sound library grooves from two of the best British maestros working in the business! The album's an early 70s gem from the KPM catalog – one of the most sought-after records ever issued by the label – and like the rest, never really made for public sale back at the time! Despite that humble origin, though, the grooves here are right up there with the funkiest work coming out from that side of the Atlantic at the time – a brilliant post-colonial blend of acoustic percussion, electric keyboards, and a fair bit of fuzzy guitar – all presented with a stripped-down, no-nonsense approach to the rhythms that's often funkier than work by some of the bigger names in the genre. Titles include "Heavy Water", "Ice Breaker", "Solid Satin", "Punch Bowl", "Frozen Steam", and "Black Light" by Alan Parker – and "Swamp Fever", "Range Rover", "Survival", "Afro Waltz", "Heat Haze", "Rocking Rhino", and "Afro Metropolis" by John Cameron. Glen CampbellGlen Sings For The King ... CD
Capitol, Late 60s. New Copy ... $7.99 14.99
A fantastic lost slice of work from Glen Campbell – recorded in the studio during the years of his big initial fame in the 60s – but never issued to the public at all! Instead, these tracks were recorded for "The King" – that is, Elvis Presley – a bit like demos of tunes that the songwriters wanted Elvis to sing – but handled by Campbell in initial readings that sometimes echo the style of Presley, sometimes have Glen bringing more of his own spirit to the songs. All the titles were written by Sid Wayne and Ben Weisman – the latter of whom gave Elvis plenty of hits in the 60s – and the album's not just a great view at a lost slice of 60s rock, but also a fantastic testament to the diversity and strength of the young Glen Campbell working in LA. Titles include "Magic Fire", "I'll Be Back", "I Got Love", "Anyone Can Play", "Spinout", "Do The Clam", "Stay Away Joe", "Love On The Rocks", "Easy Come Easy Go", "How Can You Lose What You Never Had", and "All I Needed Was The Rain" – plus a rare duet with Elvis on "We Call On Him". ✨✧ Roy CampbellAkhenaten Suite – Live At Vision Festival XII ... CD
Aum Fidelity, 2007. Used ... $7.99
A beautiful live set from trumpeter Roy Campbell – a piece of music that's every bit as majestic as its title, and handled by Roy in a wonderfully spiritual way! The album's a real high point – not just in Campbell's career, but in that of the associated group members too – including violinist Billy Bang, who moves us here maybe more than on any of his own albums from the same time – plus Bryan Carrott on vibes, Hilliard Greene on bass, and Zen Matsuura on drums. Campbell's larger musical vision is wonderful – rich enough to move all the rest of the group into a very special player – and Roy also plays a bit of recorder and arghul too, which add some nice exotic currents to the sound, almost recalling an older Yusef Lateef mode. Titles include "Aten & Amarna", "Ahkenaten", "Pharaoh's Revenge (part 1)", and "Sunset On The Nile". CD

Rollin Rock/Bear Family (Germany), 1974/1976. New Copy ... $13.99 24.99
Two later albums from the great Ray Campi – an early rockabilly wildman, and one who managed to keep on going well through the 70s underground – all without losing a beat! Rockabilly Lives is the first album up here – recorded in LA in 1974, with this really raw sound, and a mode that's maybe even more faithful to the idea of a romping rockabilly style than most of the late 50s singles on Sun Records! Most numbers just feature a very heavy acoustic bass setting up the groove that everyone else is bound to follow – including Ray, whose raw vocals haven't lost any bit of their edge, so much so that his guitar often takes second place. Titles include "Let Er Roll", "Ballin Keen", "Blue Ranger", "Hot Dog", "Rock It", and "Boogie Boogie Boo". Eager Beaver Boy features Ray with an expanded lineup, but one that only seems to let Campi get even more wild and crazy upfront on his own! Ray's got this vocal style that could put Tenpole Tudor to shame – dipping, cresting, and inflecting all these amazing notes alongside his mighty basslines as they cook up the tunes. Titles include "Pinball Millionaire", "Eager B B Beaver Boy", "Pretty Mama", "One Part Stops Where The Other Begins", "Wicked Wicked Woman", "Parts Unknown", "Play Anything", and "Major Label Blues". A remake of the earlier Don Camillo film from the 50s – done here with music that's got an even more sprightly feel! You might know Pino Donaggio from darker, more serious soundtracks – but here, he uses a mix of keyboards and woodwinds to craft lots of groovy tunes that are in the best spirit of the 80s comedic Italian soundtrack modes! Given that Terence Hill was the lead, we can bet that there's a lot of goofy action on screen – set to tunes that include "Ring The Bells", "Verso Pomponesco", "Sfida A Carte", "I'm A Fool", "Don Camillo Parla Con Il Signore", and "Nella Chiesa". The first album recorded by singer Nkotti Francois and his Black Styls group – a combo who'd been backing Nkotti for years in clubs in Cameroon, and who work here with a very sharp sound right from the start! The instrumentation is often a bit unique – organ and guitar sometimes used with weird effects or unusual phrasing – mixed with strong basslines, and some occasional excellent tenor solos – which underscore the more soulful elements that are often brought to the record by the vocals of Francois! The singer is great, and the weird organ bits are equally nice – and very unique – on titles that include "Loko La Mboa", "O Mende Wele", "Ndola Njomba Bodi Mba Da Monjo Na Mbundo", "Natiki O Mundi Nwa Bato", "Bino Senga", and "Muboledi". KPM/Be With (UK), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
One of the grooviest albums from the 70s KPM sound library – a set that features loads of upbeat vocal numbers in harmony, conducted by two of the swingingest cats to ever work for the label! Vocal material is a bit unusual in the KPM world – which usually focused on the kind of instrumental tunes that could easily be borrowed for use in films or broadcast – and in a way, that vibe is still followed here, as most of the material is wordless – with a scatting chorus of gal and guy singers working together, taking the place of the other instrumentation that might have been in the lead! At the bottom are plenty of funky rhythms and other sound library-styled grooves – bursting with the great energy you'd know from Cameron and Mansfield's other records – on titles that include "Half Forgotten Dreamdays", "Liquid Sunshine", "Fly Away", "Sweet Summer", "Ode To A Rock Opera", "Young Generation", "Play The Game", "Swingle Song", "Roller Coaster", and "Gentle Persuasion". ✨✧ Wes MontgomeryBack On Indiana Avenue – The Carroll DeCamp Recordings ... CD
Resonance, Late 50s. New Copy 2CD ... $22.99 24.99
Really fantastic early work from guitar genius Wes Montgomery – a series of live recordings from his Indianapolis roots – done at a level that's quite different than his bigger records of the 60s! Even at this early age, Wes is already a chromatic master – able to get sounds out of his guitar that are so different than most of his contemporaries – playing in a small combo mode on most tracks, but with less of the R&B influence than most postwar guitarists. Instead, Montgomery is pure jazz all the way through, but also without that too-clean tone that some folks were going for – just a great focus on color and open, honest tone – in the company of musicians who include Carl Perkins and Buddy Montgomery on piano, Mel Rhyne on Hammond, Monk Montgomery on bass, David Baker on trombone, and David Young on tenor. Those last two players only make a few appearances – as most groups are horn-less, which gives Wes even more solo space – on titles that include "Four", "Between The Devil & The Deep Blue Sea", "It's You Or No One", "Ecaroh", "Sandu", "Whisper Not", "Four On Six", "Mr Walker", "Round Midnight", "West Coast Blues", "Tune Up", "So What", and "The End Of A Love Affair". A very cool imagined sound library album – one that's heavy on the mellotron you'd expect from the title – but which also has lots of other vintage instrumentation as well! The keyed-strings quality that you usually get from mellotron isn't the biggest part of the sound – and instead, the instrument is used in more subtle ways – amidst funky and groovy instrumentals that also feature lots of organ, electric harpsichord, cello, vibes, and flute! There are occasional mod currents in the music – maybe like 80s El Records crafting a sound library set – and titles include "Mint Roadster", "Halogen Mist", "Five Wheels", "Carnaby Cathedral", "Puppet Shop", "Advantage Soho", "Dreams Of Persephone", and "Riviera".
