Stelvio CiprianiFemina Ridens ... LP
CAM/Four Flies (Italy), 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
A wonderful soundtrack from Stelvio Cipriani – penned for this 1969 Italian thriller with psycho-sexual overtones, and done with music that has elements of both! At some points, Cipriani has all the erotic touches of his best early 70s work – but at others, he uses late 60s modes that evoke Morricone and Piero Umiliani, especially the latter's playful use of instrumentation in his more outlandish soundtracks! The music grows a bit more tense as the film moves on, but usually has a sense of lightness overall – and a number of tracks feature wordless vocals, sung either by Edda Dell'Orso or I Cantori Moderni. Titles include "Week End With Mary", "Love Symbol", "Hot Skin", "Chorus & Brass Fugato", "Rendezvous In The Castle", "Femina Ridens", "The Run In The Alley", and "The Shower". LP, Vinyl record album

Stelvio CiprianiScorticateli Vivi (Skin Em Alive) (with bonus tracks) ... CD
CAM/Chris' Soundtrack Corner (Germany), 1979. New Copy ... $22.99
Stelvio Cipriani at his funkiest – taking all the lessons learned from his slinky, erotic sounds of the early 70s – and turning them into a mix of sweet sounds with a great late 70s vibe! Some tracks are upbeat and almost have a clubby feel, others have a great slow-stepping approach to funk – and there's a few others that are moodier, mellower instrumentals – of the sort that Stelvio first rose to fame with – but often with as much acoustic elements and percussion as his usual sweet keyboard work! Titles include the previous single – "Chicago USA" and "Percussion Gun" – both very funky tracks with a similar theme – mixed with lots of other unreleased numbers, including "Spanish Nights In Black Satin", "Lyonesse", "Changing Face", "Chicago USA 2", The Predator", "Crazy Town", and a number of other tunes with variations on the title "Scorticateli Vivi". Stelvio CiprianiSecond Spring ... CD
CAM/Chris' Soundtrack Corner (Germany), 1975. New Copy ... $22.99
A great little soundtrack – one that's in a mode that might well be our favorite from the Italian scene of the early 70s – a style that's funky and breezy at once, dreamy and groovy, and delivered with instrumental inflections that still have us scratching our heads at the process! Stelvio Cipriani is at his best here – even though the set has more acoustic piano instead of electric – as his role at the help is superb, as he works through light percussion, warm horn arrangements, slight strings, and other cool elements that perfectly balance between bossa and jazz, cinema and lounge, all with an organic, effortless quality that hangs tight throughout all the tracks on the record. Eddie Constantine sings on two tracks, but most numbers are instrumental – and titles include "Ricordi Nel Bosco", "Second Spring", "Tema Di Anna", "Fantasia Tragica", and "It Was A Dream". CD

Francis LaiAnima Persa (with bonus tracks) ... CD
CAM/Digitmovies (Italy), 1976. New Copy ... $16.99
A moody little 70s soundtrack from French composer Francis Lai! The score has a softer, smoother sound than some of his 60s work – but it's still got that great penchant for romantic-tinged themes that he first began with A Man & A Woman, turned here into a 70s mode that has a bit more electric instrumentation, almost grooving in a mellow sex-styled mode that recalls the backings for some of France's breathier singers of the time. As with most of Lai's best work, there's some fantastic melodies on the tunes – and the production has this echoey edge that makes them come out even better on record than on paper! Titles include "Tino E Lucia", "Il Segreto", "Anima Persa", "Rivelazione E Finale", "Zia Elisa", "Lucia", and "L'Accademia". This CD features 6 great bonus tracks – more than the previous CD issue! Gianni MarchettiIl Magnifico Tony Carrera ... LP
CAM/Transversales Disques (France), 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
A great one from Gianni Marchetti – the Italian composer we know best for his work on The Wild Eye, but who sounds equally great on this set too! The best tracks have a heavy rhythm at the bottom – not really funky, but kind of mod, and a bit more off-kilter on the slower numbers – which makes for a really compelling sound, especially next to some of the set's unusual instrumental twists. A number of the tracks feature the vocal chorus 4+4, conducted by Nora Orlandi – and they sing in a sweet and moody style that nicely offsets the groovier work by Marchetti. Titles include "Psico Classico", "Amore In Controluce", and "Psico In Controluce" – done in a number of variations, including some which are previously unreleased! LP, Vinyl record album

Ennio MorriconeGrazie Zia ... LP
CAM/Transversales Disques (France), 1968. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99
A really amazing soundtrack from Ennio Morricone – presented here with the full range of tracks for the first time ever! The music uses some wonderful vocals – sung in a style that's pop, but very creepy too – that way that Morricone vocals can have of being almost chant-like, and sort of satanic! Biance Di Renata Cortiglioni is the singer, and she's much more word-based than Edda Dell'Orso – and it appears that her vocals are overdubbed to create this cool sort of chorus effect – one that only makes the whole thing sound even creepier! In addition to the snapping rhythms of the vocal tunes, there's also some nice sprightly elements on the instrumental cuts too – not upbeat or funky, but an offbeat way that's got a jaunty snare for propulsion. Titles include "Fratello Biondo", "Guerra E Pace Polle E Brace", "Amore Col Cuore", and "Grazie Zia". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Nora OrlandiIl Diario Proibito Di Fanny ... CD
CAM/Quartet (Spain), 1969. New Copy ... $24.99
Some of the grooviest film music we've ever heard from Nora Orlandi – a nicely varied set of tracks done for a late 60s film that features four different sexual adventures! Given the story shifts, there's also a mood shift in the music – upbeat and jazzy at some points, mellow and slinky at others – themes that move between comedic and serious sounds, but always with a creative, playful instrumental approach! There's loads of great sonic surprises throughout – and each different tune has a core element that really wins us over – a chime on one cut, a wordless female vocal on another, a jazz solo, accordion, etc. CD features 25 tracks in all – 23 of which have never been issued before – as the only previous release was the 45rpm tracks "Fanny E Michel" and "Il Diario Proibito". Piero PiccioniLa Citta Prigioniera (with bonus tracks) ... CD
CAM/Digitmovies (Italy), 1962. New Copy ... $18.99
A relatively early dramatic score from Piero Piccioni – yet one that also really shows his ongoing talent for scoring the urban landscape! The film is set in Athens during WWII, and Piccioni scores the scenes with this very melancholy style that indicates the unsure sense of victory at the moment – sometimes tentative in structure, with elements that hold back and blossom slowly – other times more brooding and turgid, as if lying in wait for greater action to take place! Titles include "Tema Di Una Conzione", "Campo Lungo", "Citta Prigioniera", "Variazione", "Pedalissimo", and "Climax". CD also features a whopping 22 bonus tracks added to the original album – all previously unissued! CD

Carlo SavinaUltime Grida Dalla Savana ... LP
CAM (Italy), 1974. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $14.99
Lively sounds from Ultime Grida Dalla Savana – a 70s exploitation film that continued the "wild world" tradition of films like those in the Mondo Cane series! The setting here is the African savanna, but the music is mostly orchestral – a combination of driving themes that are right out of the sound library generation, mixed with other numbers that are maybe a bit more sensitive, in a soundtrack sort of style. Yet the lively numbers really dominate – and although we've never seen the film, the use of sprightly strings, bubbling electric bass, and even some wordless whistling must have been a great contrast to some of the images on the screen. Titles include "Questa Grande Terra", "Holland & Holland", "L'Armadillo", "Morgan Il Cacciatore", "Morte Di Un Animale", "Orango In Liberta", "Ragazzi In Festa", "Festa Paesana", and "Gli Struzzi". Carlo Savina & Aldemaro RomeroSimon Bolivar (with bonus tracks) ... CD
CAM/Digitmovies (Italy), 1969. New Copy ... $11.99
Carlo Savina penned the score for this film about the great liberator of Venezuela – and for the project, he also got a bit of help from that nation's groovy composer Aldemaro Romero! Romero's only credited with a few tracks on the record, but much of the music seems to borrow from his trademark style – especially the way of mixing rootsier elements with warmer 60s-styled modes – not familiar Latin or bossa rhythm, but something a bit more special. Savina also adds in a number of more dramatic moments too – as you might expect from his other work of the period, especially on famous western soundtracks. The CD features an insane number of bonus tracks – 21 more numbers, added to the 18 that originally appeared on the album issued by CAM! CD

Laurence Vanay (Jacqueline Thibault)Evening Colours (with bonus tracks) ... CD
CAM/Lion, 1976. New Copy ... $9.99
Amazing music from Laurance Vanay – actually a recording name for Jacqueline Thibault, a hell of a great keyboardist but an artist the label thought would be better off billed as a man! The sound here is halfway between the spacey experiments of Brian Eno and Cluster, and some of the more ambitious sound library work of the time – particularly those rare moments when prog artist got to do some studio work! Thibault's keyboards are wonderful – lots of Fender Rhodes mixed with Hammond and early synth – usually spun out at an instrumental level that has the tunes building slowly in these really great layers of sound – almost like a Popol Vuh soundtrack, but a lot more tuneful too. There's a fragile complexity that really makes the music special – and unlike anything we've ever heard from the European scene of the time – and titles include "Alone In The Rain", "Evening Colours", "Forgotten Moments", "Twin Cities", "Eyes Closed On The Way", "Sunshine In My Heart", and "Underwater Light Reflection". CD features a huge amount of bonus tracks – includign "Mamie"," Mop", and "Fausse Fn" – plus alternate takes of songs on the album. CD

The great title track to one of the best scores from Italian maestro Stelvio Cipriani – a tune that bursts out with funky drums that kick into soaring orchestrations, topped by this wicked female vocal from Olympia – whose singing style is as vibrant as the instrumentation! Edda Dell'Orso sings on "Sophisticated Shake" on the flipside – but in that weird breathy style that she used with Ennio Morricone – more voice as sound than as lyrics, next to a hip-stepping bass and cool echoey piano! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Pretty modern work from Konitz – recorded in Rome in 1968, with a French rhythm section of Martial Solal on piano, Henry Texier on bass, and Daniel Humair on drums. The presence of Solal especially gives the session an edge – as Kontiz drifts into Solal's moody, introspective mode of the time – playing long, angular, sparely-hung solos that rank with some of his most challenging work of the 60s. Titles include "Collage On Standards", "Duet For Saxophone & Drums, & Piano", "Anthropology", "Roman Blues", and "Lover Man". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Pierre BacheletHistoire D'O ... CD
CAM/Music Box (France), 1975. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A classic sexy soundtrack from the 70s – maybe the greatest thing ever to come from the pen of composer Pierre Bachelet, and a lot more rich than the images on the screen from Just Jaeckin's cinematic version of The Story Of O! Bachelet works in a mix of electric and acoustic styles – definitely inspired by some of the Italian sex scores of the time, but more spacious overall – so that the notes and rhythms really have time to entice and unfold before really hitting the right sort of sensual sound! The vibe is very spacey, with a dreamy rainy afternoon sound – with nice touches of electronics, and a good mellow feel – on titles that include "O'Apres", "O'She's A Lady", "O'Et L'Amour A Trois", "O'Et Sir Stephen", and "O'Et La Photo De Jacqueline". The leadoff cut "Zorro Is Back" is a very groovy number with vocals in English by The Silver Onions – and other titles include "Huerta's Chase", "Ortensia's Capture", "The Governor's Son", "To You Mi Chica", and "Zorro & The Governor". A solid full length from Vast Aire – formally of Cannibal Ox, delivering his solo debut on the very reliable Chocolate Industries label! If you dug Vast's forceful delivery on Cannibal Ox's much hyped, Def Jux scene igniting Cold Vein LP – but were left a bit cold by El-P's sometimes oppressive synth dirge, this could be the album you've been waiting on. This set's got a less cohesive overall sound than Cold Vein, as it features production by a number of cats, but the sound is more definition hip hop on the best of the cuts, which certainly works better for our ears. Madlib, RJD2, Ayatollah and Beatminerz man the board for the tracks, which feature appearances by Sadat X, Aesop Rock and the Ox's Vordul (hinting that some of this record may have been earlier intended for Def Jux), MF Doom and others. ✨✧ Kanye WestLate Registration ... CD
Def Jam, 2005. Used ... Out Of Stock
Time will tell whether the sophomore LP Late Registration will prove to be as revolutionary of a commercial force as College Dropout turned out to be – but it's a better album! We loved the debut as much as the rest of the world did, but this one's an easier listen from beginning to end. The production is tight, the guests earn their spots, and the whole thing's furiously soulful. Much is being made of LA hipster/orch pop troubadour Jon Brion's co-production, but this is Kanye's show. On one level Kanye can rock a subject as cliched as "Gold Digger", and still come out with a fresh perspective that runs deeper than it sounds on the surface, then deliver a serious track about the evils of the diamond trade that still rocks the ice. And those are just the first singles. Another great one! Tracks include "Wake Up Mr West", "Heard 'Em Say", "Touch The Sky" feat Lupe Fiasco, "Gold Digger" feat Jamie Foxx, "Drive Slow" feat Paul Wall & GLC, "My Way Home" feat Common, "Crack Music" feat Game, "Roses", "Bring Me Down" feat Brandy, "Diamonds From Sierra Leone" (rmx) feat Jay-Z, "We Major" feat Nas & Really Doe, "Gone" feat Consequence & Cam'Ron and more! AntenaCamino Del Sol ... LP
Numero, Early 80s. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... $9.99
Bebel Gilberto eat your heart out – Antena explored the same electric-bossa territory you did, nearly 20 years before your first big record! The group were a short-lived French outfit who were one of the shining jewels in the crown of the lovely label Les Disques Du Crepuscule during the early 80s – and were a real breath of fresh air in the post-punk years with their light and jazzy approach to the groove. As you'll hear in this set, Antena's style borrows a lot from the bossa, but also throws in some wonderful poppish touches – including jangly guitars recorded in a similar mode to some of the other French/European indie groups of the time, and a slight darkness in production that almost gives a Martin Hannett-like undercurrent to the whole set. The group's album Camino Del Sol has been lovingly reissued with a great set of notes, as well as a series of bonus tracks from an additional ep – making for a beautiful 14 track package that will really help you rediscover this nearly-lost group! Really fantastic sounds from Butcher Brown – a group who just seem to leap forward more and more with each new release – and who've really hit their groove with this well-recorded performance! The album was recorded live to disc in London – with a superb sound that only further emphasizes the sharp instrumentation that make these guys way more than just another funky combo – the fluid blend of heavy drums, warm keyboards, rich bass, and great interplay between guitar, trumpet, and occasional tenor – handled with the dexterity of a 70s jazz funk supergroup, but with all the lean energy of a funky 45! PMG (Austria), 1980. New Copy ... $6.99 16.99
Brilliant brown-eyed soul from Ray Camacho – an artist who was previously known for more border-styled work with his Teardrops band, but who steps out here with a surprisingly great blend of electric jazz and boogie! The approach is wonderful – a real re-direction of Ray's earlier groove into even more soulful territory – handled with that unique fusion that was happening in just a few of the best Texas spots, like the scene in Austin at the time. The album's equal parts soul and funk, but still has a few Latin roots too – and had this gem come out on Fantasy Records at the time, it would have pushed Ray and group into much headier territory. But we're also happy the set's been undiscovered for so many years (consider it our little secret) – and titles include "Reach Out", "Diggin Deep", "Shake What You Got", "Nobody But You", "Nothing But A Party", and "What A Day". CameoFeel Me ... CD
Chocolate City/Universal (Japan), 1980. New Copy ... $9.99
A great 80s groove from Cameo – but one that's still done in the group's best early funk ensemble mode! There's maybe a bit more emphasis on the basslines and keyboards than before, but the sound of the music is still wonderfully full and spontaneous – very much in keeping with the warmly collaborative look of the group on the cover, who really sound like they're having a hell of a lot of fun making the record! The rhythms have a razor-sharpness that just about nobody else can touch – and there's all these cool little instrumental flourishes that sneak into the mix and really keep things interesting – odd sounds on familiar instruments, moogy moments on keyboards, and even some vocal inflections that come as a nice surprise. There's two nice mellow cuts – "Feel Me" and "Is This The Way", which have a sweetly compressed harmony sound on the lyrics – and funky numbers include "Better Days", "Keep It Hot", "Roller Skates", and "Is This The Way". CameoShe's Strange ... CD
Polygram, 1984. Used ... $4.99
A bit dated, but an indisputable classic from Cameo – one that has them changing up their sound from earlier albums! The heavier funk of some of their late 70s sides is long gone, and in its place is a more stripped-down style that relies more on electric percussion and keyboards to update their sound. The best cuts on the set have that mellow crossover feel that Kool & The Gang were using at the time – smoother, slinkier soul that played well with larger audiences, yet still had a nice degree of soul. Titles include "She's Strange", "Love You Anyway", "Groove With You", "Hangin Downtown", and "Le Ve Toi". CD

Malaco/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1983. New Copy ... $9.99
A wonderful later album from GC Cameron – a singer you might know best as the early lead in The Spinners – sounding quite different here in a Malaco Records setting! The album's got Cameron slow-stepping through some great mellow soul cuts – warm, sensuous tunes that work perfectly with his vocal approach – produced with just a few southern soul inflections by the team of Tommy Couch and Wolf Stevenson. The overall approach is light years from Detroit – and titles include "Let's Share", "Hearts & Flowers", "Give Me Your Love", "No Lovin Til Friday", "Love Trap", and "Night Like This In Georgia". CD

Motown (Japan), 1974. Used ... $11.99
A tremendous solo act from GC Cameron – a singer who first rose to fame in The Spinners, but who really sounds wonderful on his own! GC's moved away from The Spinners here – into a wide range of styles that show him ready to take on most of the rest of the competition! He's working here with the best of the best of Motown – production from Stevie Wonder and Willie Hutch – and arrangements by both, plus Paul Riser, Gene Page, James Carmichael, and Frank Wilson – all of whom really give their best to the record, and show that Motown was putting plenty of effort into making GC one of the next big stars of the 70s. We're not sure why things never took off as strongly for Cameron, but whatever the case, the album's a great step for the solo artist – on cuts that include "If You Don't Love Me", "Tippin", "All In Love Is Fair", "If You're Ever Gonna Love Me", "Come Get This Thang", "I'm Gonna Give You Respect", and "Let Me Down Easy". KPM/Be With (UK), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
One of the crowning achievements of British arranger John Cameron – and perfectly titled too – given that John got his start in jazz, but also worked with plenty of British rock acts too – a legacy that comes together perfectly in this ultra-groovy set! The tunes are among some of Cameron's funkiest – and often feature heavy electric elements in the rhythms, topped by bold passages on horns – keyboards criss-crossing with saxes, basslines rumbling next to trumpets – all with a funky style that's right up there with the best of the American crime, cop, or blacksploitation soundtracks of the time! Titles include "Chicago Sidewalk", "Brass Monkey", "The Prowler", "Underlying Expectancy", "Smokey Joe's Dilemma", "The Great Escape", and "49th Street Shakedown". LP, Vinyl record album

Trunk (UK), 1969. New Copy ... $25.99
The long-overdue issue of material that was originally recorded for the film Kes back in 1969 – short and lovely numbers arranged and composed by Brit easy talent John Cameron! Cameron's best known for his work in more groove-oriented formats – but this soundtrack is something completely different, and equally great – a set of spare and compelling tunes played by a small combo that includes British jazz players Harold McNair, Ronnie Ross, David Snell, Tony Carr, and Danny Moss. The overall album is quite short, but it features a stunning range of sounds, tones, and colors – with a strong focus especially on the flute work of McNair, easily one of the greatest London players of his generation, and sort of England's answer to Roland Kirk. Titles include "Billy's Paper Round", "Billy Sees Kes In The Tower", "Kes First Flight", "Training Kes", "Billy Asleep In The Boiler Room", "Burying Kes", and "Foreboding". LP, Vinyl record album

KPM/Be With (UK), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
African rhythms, jazzy instrumentation, rock inspiration, and a motherlode of funky sound library grooves from two of the best British maestros working in the business! The album's an early 70s gem from the KPM catalog – one of the most sought-after records ever issued by the label – and like the rest, never really made for public sale back at the time! Despite that humble origin, though, the grooves here are right up there with the funkiest work coming out from that side of the Atlantic at the time – a brilliant post-colonial blend of acoustic percussion, electric keyboards, and a fair bit of fuzzy guitar – all presented with a stripped-down, no-nonsense approach to the rhythms that's often funkier than work by some of the bigger names in the genre. Titles include "Heavy Water", "Ice Breaker", "Solid Satin", "Punch Bowl", "Frozen Steam", and "Black Light" by Alan Parker – and "Swamp Fever", "Range Rover", "Survival", "Afro Waltz", "Heat Haze", "Rocking Rhino", and "Afro Metropolis" by John Cameron. The debut from Rafael Cameron – a pretty soulful set for Salsoul produced by Brass Connection's Randy Muller! Cameron's got a nice deep soul sound to his vocals, and although the arrangements are uptempo and clubby on some tracks, they're not there to cover up the singing, and have a nice soulful groove! Muller plays piano, flute and some of the percussion, with some sweet guitar in the mix, and some congas – with nice female backing vocals, too! Cuts are on the longer side, and include the dancefloor groover "Let's Get It Off", plus "Funkdown", "Magic Of You", and "Together" and "Feelin's". LP, Vinyl record album

Jo Ann CampbellBoogie Woogie Country Girl – Juke Box Pearls ... CD
Bear Family (Germany), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... About September 15, 2019 (delayed)
Jukebox pearls from the great Jo Ann Campbell – a unique singer who occupied a special place between country and pop, but who also had a fairly rocking style as well! Campbell's music here isn't entirely female rockabilly, but it's not far off either – often done with some really bold instrumental touches on guitar and tenor, and vocals from Jo Ann that seem to twang as much as backings! The work has some of the sweeter touches of female pop of the time, but often gets into grittier, more adult sort of vibes – often echoing female R&B singers from the 50s more than the little girl vocalists on the charts. The package is great – very detailed notes that finally get at the full story behind Campbell's career – and tracks are from a variety of labels, and total a whopping 37 in all. Titles include "Duane", "Breaking Up With A Boy", "Tall Boy", "You're Drivin Me Mad", "Beg Your Pardon", "Give Me Five Minutes More", "Nervous", "Donnie", "I Can't Give You Anything But Love", "Motorcycle Michael", "Where Ever You Go", "A Kookie Little Paradise", "Applause To You", "Mama", "Boogie Woogie Country Girl", and "Eddie My Love". Rollin Rock/Bear Family (Germany), 1974/1976. New Copy ... $13.99 24.99
Two later albums from the great Ray Campi – an early rockabilly wildman, and one who managed to keep on going well through the 70s underground – all without losing a beat! Rockabilly Lives is the first album up here – recorded in LA in 1974, with this really raw sound, and a mode that's maybe even more faithful to the idea of a romping rockabilly style than most of the late 50s singles on Sun Records! Most numbers just feature a very heavy acoustic bass setting up the groove that everyone else is bound to follow – including Ray, whose raw vocals haven't lost any bit of their edge, so much so that his guitar often takes second place. Titles include "Let Er Roll", "Ballin Keen", "Blue Ranger", "Hot Dog", "Rock It", and "Boogie Boogie Boo". Eager Beaver Boy features Ray with an expanded lineup, but one that only seems to let Campi get even more wild and crazy upfront on his own! Ray's got this vocal style that could put Tenpole Tudor to shame – dipping, cresting, and inflecting all these amazing notes alongside his mighty basslines as they cook up the tunes. Titles include "Pinball Millionaire", "Eager B B Beaver Boy", "Pretty Mama", "One Part Stops Where The Other Begins", "Wicked Wicked Woman", "Parts Unknown", "Play Anything", and "Major Label Blues". A remake of the earlier Don Camillo film from the 50s – done here with music that's got an even more sprightly feel! You might know Pino Donaggio from darker, more serious soundtracks – but here, he uses a mix of keyboards and woodwinds to craft lots of groovy tunes that are in the best spirit of the 80s comedic Italian soundtrack modes! Given that Terence Hill was the lead, we can bet that there's a lot of goofy action on screen – set to tunes that include "Ring The Bells", "Verso Pomponesco", "Sfida A Carte", "I'm A Fool", "Don Camillo Parla Con Il Signore", and "Nella Chiesa". The first album recorded by singer Nkotti Francois and his Black Styls group – a combo who'd been backing Nkotti for years in clubs in Cameroon, and who work here with a very sharp sound right from the start! The instrumentation is often a bit unique – organ and guitar sometimes used with weird effects or unusual phrasing – mixed with strong basslines, and some occasional excellent tenor solos – which underscore the more soulful elements that are often brought to the record by the vocals of Francois! The singer is great, and the weird organ bits are equally nice – and very unique – on titles that include "Loko La Mboa", "O Mende Wele", "Ndola Njomba Bodi Mba Da Monjo Na Mbundo", "Natiki O Mundi Nwa Bato", "Bino Senga", and "Muboledi". Sweet KPM funk from the 70s – a set that features the legendary "Big City Suite" from David Gold, plus 20 other groovers from rare KPM sound library albums of the time! Gold's suite is really great – a hip mix of keyboards, wah wah guitar, and strings – all wrapped together warmly in a portrait of a city from a variety of angles, in a variety of moods. The work's almost an update of 50s city-symphony albums, but is put together here with a much hipper 70s soundtrack mode – lots of subtle elements that really keep things interesting! Other tracks offer up a mix of jazz, soundtrack, and sound library funk – hand-picked from KPM classics like Jazzrock, Synthesis, Sounds Of The Times, Trendsetters, and other legendary albums – really packed in here with a huge amount of cuts that are totally great! Titles include "Good Vibrations" and "Trial Of Strength" by Keith Mansfield, "Testing Time" by David Lindup, "Four O'Clock Earthquake" and "Smokey Joe's Dilemma" by John Cameron, "Watchful Eye" by James Clarke, "Sunshine Special" and "Get Ready Get Set Fly" by Alan Hawkshaw, "Open Roads" by Nick Ingman, "Go Getter" by John Cameron, "City Airscape" and "City Police" by David Gold, and "Lap Of Honour" by Clive Hicks. CBS/Le Tres Jazz Club (France), Mid 60s. New Copy (reissue)... About November 15, 2019
Groovy groovy groovy! Les Masques were a 60s vocal-oriented Brazilian combo from France, and they had a tight jazzy approach that was similar to Sergio Mendes and Brazil 66! That alone would be enough to make them #1 in our book – but they also get some excellent backing from the Trio Camara, who back the band with some nice organy riffs, and a very tight rhythm section! The whole thing's a great lost bit of Braziliana – with that crossover sound that you'll hear on the best 60s and 70s European recordings of this sort. Includes the great groover "Il Faut Tenir", which has shown up on a few compilations over the years – plus "Mais Un Jour", "Enfer", "Echo", "Un Regard ..
