DJ CamLost & Found 2 (colored vinyl pressing) ... LP
Diggers Factory, 2021. New Copy ... $25.99 28.99
A collection of lost tracks from DJ Cam – the French producer who first caught our ears with his effortless laidback funky tracks in the 90s – and who's gone on to keep on making great music over the years, even though less of the world is paying attention! Case in point is the work on this set – cuts that might well be the standout numbers on records by other folks, but which here are numbers that Cam just dropped without much fanfare at all – finally collected here into a proper LP, with help from guests who include Inlove, Fillet Of Soul, and Alex Tassel. The set includes a great remake of "Summer Madness" – plus "Venice Beach", "Peace Yo", "Dieu Reconnaitra Les Siens (Moar rmx)", "Music To Drive By (Soufien 3000 rmx)", "Bossa Nova Madness", and "Kundalini For Lili". VariousDJ Cam & Frederic Beneix Present Wine4Melomanes ... LP
BBE (UK), 1970s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $39.99
A great set of rare funk and jazz grooves – even if the concept for the album is a bit strange! Frederic Beneix is a wine expert, and had DJ Cam pick rare cuts from the years of a variety of recommended wines – but rather than focus on that aspect of the record, just dive into the music – which is a really great blend of obscure cuts, of the sort that remind us that even though Cam is a performer, he's always been a hell of a record collector with a great ear for music! The track selection is wonderful, and has the kind of genre-stepping, ear-opening vibe of a Gilles Peterson compilation from years back – wonderful cuts that sound even more wonderful together – with titles that include "Ride On" by Frederic Rabold Crew, "Jeux De Regards" by Isabelle Mayereau, "Jungle Jim" by Nemo, "Got To Be Lovin You" by Eric Tagg, "Scott Joplin" by Horace Silver, "Wax Planet" by Mike Nock Underground, "Wind" by Achim Kuck, "Have A Little Faith" by Carmen Lundy, "Sigi Dance" by Siegfried Kessler & Serge Bringolf, "The Sand" by Larry Rose Band, "Samba De Haps" by Stan Kenton, "Knast Funk" by Embryo, and "Calling Up The Rain" by Gustav Brom. ✨✧ VariousPaura – A Collection Of Italian Horror Sounds From The Cam/Sugar Archives ... LP
Sugar/Decca, 1970s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
A totally wonderful collection of music from the glory days of the Italian soundtrack scene – one that features some classic horror themes from the 70s, and also a fair bit of never-issued material too! The creepy image on the cover will give you a good idea of what you're in for here – music that goes way beyond the ordinary, used to score a host of horror films from a time when Italy was really setting a new standard for all things scary – and using music as a very big part of the overall presentation! As with other Italian work of the time, the scope of sounds is incredible – and production styles and studio techniques do even more to make familiar elements sound even more weird and wonderful. The set features 25 tracks in all – with unreleased titles that include "Minaccia Sulla Citta" by Daniele Patucchi, "Orinoco Prigioniere Del Sesso" by Marcello Giombini, "Bambola Sensuale" by Sante Maria Romitelli, "Giallo In Tensione" by Daniele Patucchi, and "Un Gioco Per Eveline" by Marcello Giombini – plus lots more by Gobin, Stefani Liberati, Franco Micalizzi, Stelvio Cipriani, Manuel De Sica, Bruno Nicolai, and Ennio Morricone. ✨✧ Luis BacalovLa Strega In Amore ... CD
CAM/Sugar (Italy), 1966. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A wonderful early soundtrack from Luis Bacalov – much jazzier than some of his later work, with a vibe that's right up there with some of the more jazz-based work of the Italian scene in the earlier part of the 60s! There's a cool wordless vocal from Nora Orlandi on a few tracks, and nice use of flute, piano, and percussion throughout – varied nicely, but with a really strong song-based sort of approach – so that the album's not entirely jazz in structure, but not far off either! Bacalov's always been great at more dramatic moments, but it's great to hear him working in a style like this – and there's a nice sense of variety on the record, which really keeps things interesting – especially as a few more guitar-based numbers move in to the mix. The sound gets a bit more tense at the end, but is still nice and spare – and titles include "La Strega In Amore", "Aura", "Due Donna Un Enigma", "Seduzione Diabolica", "Danza Greca", "Bruciata Viva", and "Consuleo". Stelvio CiprianiScorticateli Vivi (Skin Em Alive) (with bonus tracks) ... CD
CAM/Chris' Soundtrack Corner (Germany), 1979. New Copy ... $22.99
Stelvio Cipriani at his funkiest – taking all the lessons learned from his slinky, erotic sounds of the early 70s – and turning them into a mix of sweet sounds with a great late 70s vibe! Some tracks are upbeat and almost have a clubby feel, others have a great slow-stepping approach to funk – and there's a few others that are moodier, mellower instrumentals – of the sort that Stelvio first rose to fame with – but often with as much acoustic elements and percussion as his usual sweet keyboard work! Titles include the previous single – "Chicago USA" and "Percussion Gun" – both very funky tracks with a similar theme – mixed with lots of other unreleased numbers, including "Spanish Nights In Black Satin", "Lyonesse", "Changing Face", "Chicago USA 2", The Predator", "Crazy Town", and a number of other tunes with variations on the title "Scorticateli Vivi". Ennio MorriconeNoi Lazzaroni (180 gram pressing) ... LP
CAM/Digitmovies (Italy), 1978. New Copy ... $19.99
Rare soundtrack work from Ennio Morricone, recorded for an Italian TV series that didn't get any play on this side of the Atlantic! The music has a surprisingly haunting quality, especially for television – almost the darker side of Morricone that you'd hear in the earlier part of the 70s, and less like some of his warmer scores of the time when this one was recorded. Edda Dell'Orso sings quite darkly on a few tracks – really bringing an edge to the music – and there's also a mix of atonal strings and lighter, lilting moments – of the sort we're much more likely to hear in some of Morricone's best cinematic endeavors. Titles include "Tema Borghese", "Tema Popolaresco", "Passione E Misticismo", "Musica Di Strada No 1", "Solo Violini", and "Notturno Senza Lunda". LP, Vinyl record album

CAM/Sugar, 1972. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $42.99
Haunting horror work from the great Bruno Nicolai – an album that's got some wonderfully-crafted themes mixed with some lighter, breezier numbers – almost in a Rosemary's baby sort of mode! Bruno really gets to show off both sides of his talents here – and comes up with some spare and melodic orchestrations that recall his work with Morricone, mixed with other numbers that diverge into sweeter territory and dance along nicely. The set features a total of 24 numbers – nearly all of which are more redemptive than the darker horror plot of the film – and titles include "In Cantina", "Servizio Fotografico", "Minaccia", "Scoperta & Sesto Delitto", "Confronto Finale", "In Automobile", "Ufficio Vuoto", and "Terzo Delitto". Nino RotaAmarcord (with bonus tracks) ... CD
CAM/Sugar, 1974. New Copy ... $16.99 18.99
A gem of a record from the legendary Nino Rota – one of his best scores for director Federico Fellini – a bit later than some of their 60s classics, but equally great! The music is filled with Rota's trademark interweaving of dominant themes and lighter moments – the kind of tight chamber scoring that makes his compositions work so well – bouncey, but never silly, moody, but never too serious. The narrative takes Rota to more pan-historic territory, but his approach here is similar to Fellini films set in contemporary Rome – and dominant instrumentation includes bits of accordion, piano, horns, and gentle strings. Wonderful stuff all around – with loads of short little tracks that have some nice hooks – titles that include "La Fogaraccia", "La Gradisca E Il Principe", "Gary Cooper", "Lo Struscio", "Amarcord", and "Ti Ricordi Siboney". CD features lots of bonus material – 27 tracks in all! CD

CAM/Quartet (Spain), 1955. New Copy 2CD ... $29.99 34.99
One of the first really amazing scores that Nino Rota penned for Fellini – the masterful soundtrack to 1955's Il Bidone! Rota's working here in that wonderful theme-based mode he used for some of Fellini's later masterpieces – one that features standout musical passages that dance amidst larger orchestrations with a really playful feel – mixing together isolated instrumental solos with grander passages of strings and woodwinds, in a mode that really sets the scene for changes in scoring to come in the 60s. Themes on the set are easily as evocative as work for La Dolce Vita or 8 1/2 – and titles include "Al Cinema", "L'Ultimo Bidone", "Il Bidone", "Il Tesoro Nascosto", "In Viaggio Per Un Bidone", and "Cara Bambina" – plus bonus alternate takes of "Ballerina Night", "Cara Bambina" and "L'ultimo Bidone" along with a first CD with the full film score. Philippe SardeCesar Et Rosalie ... LP
CAM/Transversales Disques (France), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99 34.99
One of the coolest Philippe Sarde soundtracks of the 70s – a set that balances his conventional modes with some much more offbeat moments – including some very cool use of electronics next to some bold woodwinds scored by Hubert Rostaing! The approach is very unusual for Sarde, and his ability to still make the odd sentimental moment amidst he more striking passages is what really makes the whole thing great – as he shows us that he's not only the master of the mature, adult film score – but also still has his ears open to all the underground changes going on around him! The set features moog from Guy Boyer and trumpet from Pierre Dutour – and titles include "Free Jazz", "Folie De Cesar", "David", "Le Cortez Et La Course", "David Et Rosalie", "Les Sentiments", "Repas De Noces", and "Cesar Court Chez Antoine". Philippe SardeLes Choses De La Vie (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Quartet/CAM (Spain), 1969. New Copy ... $20.99 29.99
Our favorite album ever from French soundtrack maestro Philippe Sarde – and maybe one of our favorite French soundtracks too! There's a really special quality to this music – as rich as some of Sarde's other scores, but maybe linked more towards the new wave of subtle expression that came about in French cinema after the nouvelle vague – that quality that you might hear in the music of Francis Lai at his most subtle moments, handled perfectly here. Tracks are relatively short – mostly spare variations on a sad, dreamy little melody that's played in the film as the car of the main character slowly crumbles in an accident – a death that begins the movie, which then tells the story backwards! The tune only features swells of strings and piano, but it's compelling enough to hear in a number of variations here – and mixed with a few other great melodies too, including one song sung by the film's stars Michel Piccoli and Romy Schneider. Titles include "L'Accident Ralenti", "Prelude A L'Accident", "La Chanson D'Helene", and "La Mort". Also features a bonus 12 minute suite of work from "Nelly Et Mr Arnaud" – as well as German and Italian versions of the "La Chanson D'Helene", and a 6 minute "La Choses De La Vie" suite. CD

Tam/CAM (Japan), Early 70s. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A very nice score to this prime Bruce Lee film – and a lot cooler than usual for John Barry! The score is a mix of orchestral and funky bits – but even the orchestral moments have some great effects and sounds in them, and the funkier stuff has a great 70s cop show sort of feel. The main theme has these nice "bew-bew" electronic sounds, and it also includes sound effects in one version. Other nice cuts include "Will This Be The Song I'll Be Singing Tomorrow", "Final Justice", and the wild "Face Off", which is really just sound effects from a kung fu fight! Hiiiiiiiii-ya! CAM/Quartet (Spain), 1969. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Some of the grooviest film music we've ever heard from Nora Orlandi – a nicely varied set of tracks done for a late 60s film that features four different sexual adventures! Given the story shifts, there's also a mood shift in the music – upbeat and jazzy at some points, mellow and slinky at others – themes that move between comedic and serious sounds, but always with a creative, playful instrumental approach! There's loads of great sonic surprises throughout – and each different tune has a core element that really wins us over – a chime on one cut, a wordless female vocal on another, a jazz solo, accordion, etc. CD features 25 tracks in all – 23 of which have never been issued before – as the only previous release was the 45rpm tracks "Fanny E Michel" and "Il Diario Proibito". A great little soundtrack – one that's in a mode that might well be our favorite from the Italian scene of the early 70s – a style that's funky and breezy at once, dreamy and groovy, and delivered with instrumental inflections that still have us scratching our heads at the process! Stelvio Cipriani is at his best here – even though the set has more acoustic piano instead of electric – as his role at the help is superb, as he works through light percussion, warm horn arrangements, slight strings, and other cool elements that perfectly balance between bossa and jazz, cinema and lounge, all with an organic, effortless quality that hangs tight throughout all the tracks on the record. Eddie Constantine sings on two tracks, but most numbers are instrumental – and titles include "Ricordi Nel Bosco", "Second Spring", "Tema Di Anna", "Fantasia Tragica", and "It Was A Dream". CD

✨✧ Angelo Francesco LavagninoKali Yug – La Dea Della Vendetta/Il Mistero Del Tempo Indiano ... CD
CAM/Quartet (Spain), 1963. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A pair of rare 60s soundtracks from Italian maestro Angelo Francesco Lavagnino – both of which work together well in a single package! First up is Kali Yug – one of the coolest, most exotic soundtracks we've ever heard from Angelo Francesco Lavagnino – and that's saying a lot, given that he also did work for crime, western, and sci fi movies too! The music has a feel that nicely fits the cover – almost exotica at times, but with more touches of jazz and soundtrack elements too – although some numbers use very cool percussion and woodwinds, with a feel that's almost ethnographic in spots! The careful blend almost rivals Les Baxter at his Capitol Records best – and titles include "Il Raja", "Idillio Di Amrita", "Le Carovane", "Rapsodia Indiana", "Giostra Bengalese", and "Notturno In Giardino". This CD version features a whopping 29 tracks in all – lots of bonus material added to the original record. Next is Il Mistero Del Tempio Indiano – a soundtrack with a nice mix of exotic themes and more dynamic and dramatic passages – a vibe that's very similar to some of the best "blood and sandals" material from the Italian scene of the late 50s and early 60s! Most of the instrumentation is conventional, but used in unusual tones and phrasing – and mixed with some nice percussion touches at times – all in a blend of modes that provides a nice sense of diversity through the 19 tracks included in the package. A beautiful 70s soundtrack from Armando Trovajoli – the Italian composer who's maybe best known for a few key scores in the 60s, but who continued to do really wonderful work as the years went on! The set's overflowing with the kind of well-spaced moments that makes some of Trovajoli's best work so wonderful – a mode that was clearly learned from bossa and jazz, but taken to different Italian cinematic territory with the instrumentation – which here includes great use of piano and keyboards, at times almost echoing the style of his contemporary, Stelvio Cipriani! Yet there's also some other instrumentation and elements that change things up nicely too, which makes for a really great sense of variety throughout. Titles include the vocal track "Che Vuole Questa Musica Stasera", sung by Peppino Gagliardi – plus "Woman's Perfume",K "Benedicte", "In The Dark", "Passeggiando Per Genova", "Per La Strada", "Tuo Amore Mio", "Those Lazy Days", and "Lungo Il Marciapiede". A wonderful Nino Rota score – composed around the same time as his better-known work for Fellini, but done for a film directed by Luchino Visconti! A career-spanning collection of work from one of our favorite Italian soundtrack composers of all time – the fantastic Piero Piccioni, presented here in a wealth of material pulled from the vaults of Cam! Piccioni was one of the most important Italian film music talents of the 60s – right there behind Ennio Morricone – and during the decade, he started in jazz, then quickly moved through a range of really wonderful styles – going for mod elements, funkier bits, bossa nova, and other inflections that kept his work interesting well through the 70s! This set features a number of tracks that aren't easily available on other reissues, mixed with some we'd never seen before – a massive collection of 26 titles, with work from films that include Lucky Luciano, Citta E Campagna, Addio Alexandra, Per Questa Notte, In Viaggio Con Pappa, Io So Che Tu Sai Che Io So, L'Assassino, Una Vita Violenta, Tre Per Una Rapina, I Dolci Inganni, Il Figlio Di Spartacus, Niente Rose Per OSS 177, Toh E Morta La Nonna, and many others. Includes six unreleased tracks – and ten that appear on vinyl for the first time ever! LP, Vinyl record album

We loved the debut as much as the rest of the world did, but this one's an easier listen from beginning to end. The production is tight, the guests earn their spots, and the whole thing's furiously soulful. Much is being made of LA hipster/orch pop troubadour Jon Brion's co-production, but this is Kanye's show. On one level Kanye can rock a subject as cliched as "Gold Digger", and still come out with a fresh perspective that runs deeper than it sounds on the surface, then deliver a serious track about the evils of the diamond trade that still rocks the ice. And those are just the first singles. Another great one! Tracks include "Wake Up Mr West", "Heard 'Em Say", "Touch The Sky" feat Lupe Fiasco, "Gold Digger" feat Jamie Foxx, "Drive Slow" feat Paul Wall & GLC, "My Way Home" feat Common, "Crack Music" feat Game, "Roses", "Bring Me Down" feat Brandy, "Diamonds From Sierra Leone" (rmx) feat Jay-Z, "We Major" feat Nas & Really Doe, "Gone" feat Consequence & Cam'Ron and more! Incredible work from Human Expression – a group with this moody, dark quality that's completely mindblowing, especially given their young years at the time of these recordings! The music certainly falls into the garagey sounds of the Sunset Strip scene at the time – but there's also a quality here that really sets these guys apart – this stark, bracing vibe that's hinted at in some of the really bleak song titles of their tunes, and which comes through strongly in the mix of offbeat vocalizations, unusual guitar tunings, and really raw production throughout! Tracks include "Reading Your Will", "Love At Psychedelic Velocity", "Every Night", "Cam Me Down", "Sweet Child Of Nothingness", "I Told Her", "Return Nevermore", "Judgement Of Rejection", "I Don't Need Nobody", "Room Of Shadows", "Who Is Burning", and "Outside Of It All". The record's got plenty of keyboards, riffing guitars, and funky drums – used here on short tunes that pack plenty of punch, and which often have a romping funky style that's somewhere in the territory of the legendary Duke Of Burlington albums – but with more organ in the lead instead of piano! Very funky throughout – with cuts that include "The Hunter", "Waiting The Blow", "Handy Goes To Pub", "Clumsy Chap", The Newcomer", and "A Sort of Witchery". LP, Vinyl record album

Full-on frenetic funk from Cameo – one of the group's tightest albums, yet still without any of the too-slick sounds of later years! The sound here is amazing – and we always find ourselves wondering how a group of guys can hit such perfect grooves with just a bunch of basses, guitars, and keyboards – a totally on-the-money style that vamps, leaps, and jumps with energy throughout. The vocals are great too – bubbling up in the mix almost like another instrument – and the album's got a depth that so many other copycat funk records from the time just couldn't touch. A lovely set of modern French work from Camille – done in a style that mixes the earthy with the electronic – in a way that's vaguely reminiscent of the modes used by Benjamin Biolay or Keren Ann, but which has a spirit that's clearly its own as well! Camille has a very strong vocal presence on the set – breathy and intimate one moment, but deeply soulful the next – in a way that's especially resonant with the more acoustic elements on the album, and which produces a really compelling sound overall. There's a criss-crossing of modes here that almost seems to borrow inspiration from some of the recent Trama generation in Brazil – but the overall presentation is quite specifically French, and extremely poetic as well. The pairing of Glen Campbell and Jimmy Webb is probably one of the greatest ideas ever in the history of pop music – as you'll hear on the album's title track, "By The Time I Get To Phoenix". Glen's original hit version of the song – written by a wee Jimmy at a young age – forever cut the way for his unique blend of pop, country, and easy vocal styles. The tune also kicks off this pretty nice little album of tracks that features great lesser known numbers, including some surprisingly great country covers. A really unique take on the music of John Coltrane's Love Supreme – served up here in a sacred steel style by the Campbell Brothers, on a set recorded live in Amsterdam just before the passing of brother Darick Campbell! Here, Darick plays lap steel next to pedal steel from Chuck Campbell and midi guitar from brother Philip – alongside bass from Daric Bennett and drums from Carlton Campbell – all in a mode that follows the spirit of the original Love Supreme album, but also has maybe a tighter vibe overall. In addition to the original sections "Acknowledgement", "Resolution", "Pursuance", and "Psalm", there's also a bass solo and drum solo section – and at times, the performance even gets a little bit funky! Wonderful work from this obscure funky group – a combo who hailed from Indy, only issued two albums back in the 70s, but also left behind this wicked batch of unissued cuts that were recorded up in Chicago! The group have a vibe that's every bit as great as their warmly collaborative look on the cover – clearly an ego-less funky combo who are able to shift singers and moods from track to tracks – trading leads between singers Anthony Joseph Roberts and Pamela Tanner, and also bringing lots of jazzy instrumentation into the mix too! These guys had been together for a number of years before recording the set, and are clearly at the top of their game – woodshedding hard away from the limelight, but knocking it out of the park with cuts that include "69 Cents", "I'm In A Hurry", "Shell Of A Man", "Where You Lead", "That Is Why", "Love So Strange", and vocal and instrumental versions of "See The Light". Electric PrunesThen Came The Dawn – The Complete Recordings 1966 to 1969 (Electric Prunes/Underground/Mass In F Minor/Release Of An Oath/Good Old Rock & Roll/Shadows/Stockholm 67/bonus tracks) (6CD set) ... CD
Reprise/Grapefruit (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 6CD ... $54.99 74.99
A huge collection of work from one of the most enigmatic groups of the 60s – all of their classic albums for Reprise, plus rare material too! First up is the self-titled Electric Prunes set, in stereo and mono - an early moment of genius from The Electric Prunes – and exactly the kind of record that shows why they were a cut above their contemporaries, and why Warner really backed them strongly right from the start! There's a depth here that rivals some of the group's Sunset Strip contemporaries – and although David Axelrod's not working with them on the record, there's still lots of dark corners and sharp edges – really thoughtful sounds that are spun out wonderfully on fuzzy guitars and organ, with some nicely subtle drums in the rear. Tracks include "I Has Too Much To Dream (Last Night)", "Try Me On For Size", "Get Me To the World On Time", "About A Quarter To Nine", and "Luvin". Next are mono and stereo presentations of Underground – a record that has the Electric Prunes are arranging themselves, and have production from Dave Hassinger. The tracks are shorter than on some of their Axelrod albums, but they're also showing a sophistication that makes the material really compelling – mixing together psyche and garage roots into a sophisticated document that points at the tremendous growth that was going on around them in the rock world. Tracks include "The Great Banana Hoax", "Wind Up Toys", "Dr. Do-Good", "Hideaway", and "Capt. Glory". Next are stereo and mono versions of Mass In F Minor – a beautifully baroque batch of tracks, written and arranged for the Electric Prunes by the great David Axelrod – a really groundbreaking mix of modes that had quite an impact back in the late 60s! The record shows Axelrod's perpetual fascination with the spiritual – mixed with that great modern style of funk that he was forging at Capitol during the late 60s. The record's not really preachy, nor is it proggy. It's more of a complex blueprint of rock, jazz, funk, and touches of soul – all hung together on the same sort of "mass" structure that Axelrod would later use with Cannonball and on his own. Titles include "Kyrie Eleison", "Gloria", "Benedictus", and "Sanctus". Release Of An Oath is the second album done by David Axelrod for The Electric Prunes – and arguably the best! The album's a bit unusual, in that none of the original Prunes were actually working on the session – and instead, Axlerod's almost fully at the helm – putting together the set in a way that's quite similar to his own solo albums over at Capitol! As with those, there's a bold, spacious sort of instrumentation here – richly orchestral, but also quite funky at times – punctuated by great drums from Earl Palmer, bass from Carol Kaye, keyboards from Don Randi, and guitar from Howard Roberts – who's really tripping out nicely here! The work uses the Jewish Kol Nidre mass as its conceptual locus – but really takes off with plenty of tripped-out Axelrod flourishes that make the whole thing a fair bit more psychedelic than anything you'd ever hear in temple. Titles include "Holy Are You", "The Adoration", "Our Father, Our King", "Kol Nidre", and "General Confessional". On Just Good Old Rock & Roll, The Electric Prunes get back to basics – as you might guess from the title – shaking off some of the larger, more ambitious modes of their albums with David Axelrod, yet still retaining a nicely trippy sound overall! The lineup of the group has shifted a bit – hence their billing as "the new improved" Electric Prunes – but although things are stripped-down and simple, there's still some amazing music on the record – a blend of guitar, flute, organ, and vocals that flows along wonderfully with some unusual sounds that we wouldn't expect! And while there's certainly a bit of "good old rock and roll" going on here on a few more straightforward songs, it's not like the album's Let It Be or anything like that – because the group are really more just getting back to the garagey psych of their roots, but doing it a bit better than before! Titles include "Sell", "14 Year Old Funk", "Love Grows", "Giant Sunhorse", "Silver Passion Mine", "Sing To Me", "Tracks", and "Finders Keepers Losers Weepers". CD then features two more CDs – CD5 is shadows, with 19 rare tracks, including singles and even a radio spot – and CD6 features their famous live set from 1967, recorded in Stockholm – plus four demo recordings by Jim & The Lords. Mack Avenue, 2017. Used ... $9.99
A fantastic debut as a leader from pianist Cameron Graves – an artist you might know from Kamasi Washington's album The Epic – and an even more tremendous talent when he gets his own chance to shine in the spotlight! Graves has a very bold, righteous vision here – a mode that's in the same California Get Down spirit as Washington's music, but with more focus on the structures built up by the piano – almost a post-modal approach, with soaring spiritual currents – served up not just by Graves on the keys, but also by Kamasi Washington on tenor, Philip Dizack on trumpet, and Ryan Porter on trombone! The three horns have a way of wrapping together as a core, then soaring to the skies – while Graves pumps up the movement with a great deal of energy, and the soloists break off on their own. The group also features bass from Thundercat on two tracks, and Hadrien Faraud on the rest – plus drums from Ronald Bruner. Graves produced – which gives the record a very different feel than other Mack Avenue releases – and titles include "Isle Of Love", "The Lucifer Rebellion", "El Diablo", "Adam & Eve", "Planetary Prince", "The End Of Corporatism", and "Satania Our Solar System". Kamasi Washington guests on two tracks, Graves sings on one other cut – and titles include "Red", "Super Universes", "Sons Of Creation", "The Life Carriers", "Sacred Spheres", "Master Spirits", and "Eternal Paradise". Garland GreenLove Is What We Came Here For ... LP
RCA, 1977. Near Mint- ... $38.99
An overlooked late 70s moment from the great Garland Green – a set that's quite different than his earlier Chicago soul – thanks to production from Leon Haywood in a sweet west coast mode! The record's got an easygoing vibe that really fits the cover – a mix of mellow and midtempo tracks that Garland does especially well – plus a few groovers too. That deep, rich tone that Green brought to his music is perfect for the warmer touches that Leon creates in the backings – and the whole thing's almost got that mix of deep and modern soul than was brewing out of some of the hipper corners of the south at the time. Arrangements are by Haywood with Gene Page and Tony Coleman – and titles include "I've Quit Running the Streets", "Moody Woman", "Love Is What We Came Here For", "I Found Myself When I Lost You", "Lovin You Baby", "Let Me Be Your Pacifier", and "Let's Celebrate". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original pressing! Cover has light wear and back has a gold promo stamp – but this is a nice copy overall.)

Sol KaplanSpy Who Came In From The Cold ... LP
RCA, 1966. Very Good+ ... $2.99
A spy film – and with a mix of jazz and orchestral themes that's similar to some of Henry Mancini's work from the same time. The main theme is nice and jazzy, with some good guitar, and a great crime theme sound. Two other nice tracks are "The Pussy Willow Club" and "Pussy Willow Girl" – both with a loungey groove that's again a bit Mancini-ish. Other numbers include "Waltz For A Spy", "The Compound", and "Piano Prelude". LP, Vinyl record album

Le Trio CamaraLe Trio Camara ... CD
Saravah/Fremeaux & Associates (France), 1968. New Copy ... $16.99 18.99
Bossa jazz from the French scene of the 60s – an ultra-hip album issued on the legendary Saravah Records label – and one that's one of the best illustrations of the label's way of blending together jazz and other global styles! The group here is a trio, with Fernando Martins on some wonderfully bold piano – working with bassist Edson Lobo and drummer Nelson Serra – in a groove that's rooted in older Rio bossa jazz modes, but also has a slightly more powerful quality, too – that special sort of late 60s flowering that Brazilian music had when it hit the very receptive European scene. The trio have a nice rolling sound that might be compared to some of the MPS jazz/Brazilian crossover sessions – and titles include "Upa Neguinho", "Nascente", "Bia", "Noa Noa", "Samba Novo", "Berimbau", "Nao Tem Solucao", and "Muito A Vontade". Edu LoboCamaleao ... LP
Philips (Brazil), 1978. Very Good+ ... $33.99
A gem of a later album from the great Edu Lobo – very different than his bossa recordings, and with a sophisticated jazzy vibe that perfectly illustrates all the growth he'd achieved during the 70s! The songs are wonderful – complex and yet really personal, with a quality that rivals some of the best from the Milton Nascimento/Lo Borges camp of the time. And like those, there's a jazzy quality to the instrumentation that really keeps things fresh – lots of contributions from musicians like Wagner Tiso on keyboards, Paulo Moura on reeds, Antonio Adolfo on piano, and Dori Caymmi on guitar. Backing vocals are by Boca Livre and MPB4 – but it's Edu's honest lead vocals that really send the whole thing home – sparkling wonderfully on tunes that include "Canudos", "Coracao Noturno", "Sanha De Mandinga", "Lero Lero", "Camaleo", "Bate Boca", and "O Trenzinho do Capira". Tim MaiaVelho Camarada ... CD
EMI/Odeon (Brazil), 1979. Used ... $19.99
Late 70s work from Brazilian soul singer Tim Maia – a set of tracks done with assistance from friends that include Hyldon, The Fevers, and Rosana. The style here is much smoother than some of Tim's rougher earlier soul work – but not in a bad way, just one that shows him growing a lot as a songsmith, and reaching a level that has him competing with the American smooth soul stars who were such a big influence on his work. There's a few really wonderful tunes on here – the kind of universal soul tracks that grab you right away with a classic 70s sound, and which are so tightly done that you don't even realize you can't understand the language! Titles include "Vou Com Gas", "Boogie Esperto", "Reencontro", "Labios De Mel", "Ate Parece Que Foi Sonho", and "Frente A Frente". CD

Tim Maia, Cassiano, e HyldonVelhos Camaradas Vol 2 ... CD
Universal (Brazil), 1970s. Used ... $11.99
Great stuff – the second volume in this excellent series that focuses on the 70s work of 3 of Brazil's greatest soul artists! During the 70s, while most of Brazil was focusing on the MPB work of the post-Tropicalia years, Tim Maia, Hyldon, and Cassiano were forging a whole new sound – one that paid respect to the huge influence that American soul and R&B had had on black Brazil, but which also had room for some of the new forms of expression that were coming into Brazilian music at the time. The result is a batch of tracks that shift from mellow soul to spacious uptempo numbers – sharing a lot of the stylistic influences of mid 70s American chart soul, but sounding a lot different in some of the rhythms, and in the style of language used in the lyrics. Titles include "Chocolate", "Nao Quero Dinheiro", "Nao Figue Triste", and "Preciso Ser Amado" by Tim Maia; "Primeira Pessoa Do Singular", "Taxi Pra Bahia", and "Pelas Ruas De Los Angels" by Hyldon; and "Nana Contigo", "Ana", and "Saia Dessa Fossa" by Cassiano. Also includes the duet "I Don't Know What To Do With Myself", between Tim Maia and Hyldon! CD
(Out of print and still sealed.)
