✨✧ DJ CamLost & Found 2 (colored vinyl pressing) ... LP
Diggers Factory, 2021. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A collection of lost tracks from DJ Cam – the French producer who first caught our ears with his effortless laidback funky tracks in the 90s – and who's gone on to keep on making great music over the years, even though less of the world is paying attention! Case in point is the work on this set – cuts that might well be the standout numbers on records by other folks, but which here are numbers that Cam just dropped without much fanfare at all – finally collected here into a proper LP, with help from guests who include Inlove, Fillet Of Soul, and Alex Tassel. The set includes a great remake of "Summer Madness" – plus "Venice Beach", "Peace Yo", "Dieu Reconnaitra Les Siens (Moar rmx)", "Music To Drive By (Soufien 3000 rmx)", "Bossa Nova Madness", and "Kundalini For Lili". ✨✧ DJ CamTropical Gypsy (colored vinyl pressing) ... LP
Diggers Factory (France), 2021. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A sweet little set from DJ Cam – not nearly as tropical as you might guess from the title, although there are a few lighter moments that almost have the famous beatmaker borrowing a bit from Brazil! The core energy, though, is in a mix of jazzy keyboards, gentle rhythms, and the kinds of samples that first set Cam apart from the rest back in the 90s – almost used unabashedly a few times here, in ways that really take us back to the old days – although the live instrumentation is a lot more than Cam would have given us back then too. Alex Tassel plays a few trumpet solos on the record – and titles include "Joao", "Paradise Garage", "Late Night Love", "Jealousy", "A Castle In Spain", "We Live In Tulum", and "Tropical Gypsy". The set features work from a variety of producers – Cam & Rek, Trizzy, Infonova, Frenyc Ent, Get Larg, Heatmakerz, and others – and guest appearances from Mimi, Max B, Jim Jones, and Disco Black. Luis BacalovLa Strega In Amore ... CD
CAM/Sugar (Italy), 1966. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A wonderful early soundtrack from Luis Bacalov – much jazzier than some of his later work, with a vibe that's right up there with some of the more jazz-based work of the Italian scene in the earlier part of the 60s! There's a cool wordless vocal from Nora Orlandi on a few tracks, and nice use of flute, piano, and percussion throughout – varied nicely, but with a really strong song-based sort of approach – so that the album's not entirely jazz in structure, but not far off either! Bacalov's always been great at more dramatic moments, but it's great to hear him working in a style like this – and there's a nice sense of variety on the record, which really keeps things interesting – especially as a few more guitar-based numbers move in to the mix. The sound gets a bit more tense at the end, but is still nice and spare – and titles include "La Strega In Amore", "Aura", "Due Donna Un Enigma", "Seduzione Diabolica", "Danza Greca", "Bruciata Viva", and "Consuleo". Philippe SardeCesar Et Rosalie ... LP
CAM/Transversales Disques (France), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99 34.99
One of the coolest Philippe Sarde soundtracks of the 70s – a set that balances his conventional modes with some much more offbeat moments – including some very cool use of electronics next to some bold woodwinds scored by Hubert Rostaing! The approach is very unusual for Sarde, and his ability to still make the odd sentimental moment amidst he more striking passages is what really makes the whole thing great – as he shows us that he's not only the master of the mature, adult film score – but also still has his ears open to all the underground changes going on around him! The set features moog from Guy Boyer and trumpet from Pierre Dutour – and titles include "Free Jazz", "Folie De Cesar", "David", "Le Cortez Et La Course", "David Et Rosalie", "Les Sentiments", "Repas De Noces", and "Cesar Court Chez Antoine". ✨✧ Piero PiccioniUn Tentativo Sentimentale ... LP
CAM/WHP (Italy), 1963. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A rare early soundtrack from Italian maestro Piero Piccioni – and much more of a jazz session than some of his later work! The style is clearly taking off from the jazz scores of the French new wave – and Piccioni's orchestrations are wonderful, with a good balance between the overall mood and standout solos on instruments that include vibes, organ, and trumpet – the last of which is played in a number of settings by Nunzio Rotondo! The whole thing is wonderful – much more cool than sentimental – and titles include "Blue Jeans Blues", "Mamboso", "Blue Low Blues", "Marilou", "Vano Interludio", and "Striscioline". CAM/Sony (Italy), 1959. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An early soundtrack by Armando Trovajoli – a jazzy batch of tunes scored for this 50s Italian comedy! The approach here is often in the jazz noir mode – slightly edgey, slightly angular, but with all the warm soulfulness of jazz-based work you'd find in American films of the 50s. The players are all quite strong – with breakout sax, trumpet, and flute work that's up there with the best of the Italian scene at the time! ✨✧ Franco BixioFilm Music Of Franco Bixio (Deserto Di Fuoco/Instantanea Per Un Delitto/Diario Segreto/Il Tuo Piacere E Il Mio) ... CD
CAM/Quartet (Spain), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Four rare soundtracks from Italian composer Franco Bixio – appearing here on CD for the first time ever! First up is Deserto Di Fuoco – a score that begins with a dreamy wordless vocal theme, but then quickly moves into tenser moments – a kind of low-end, brooding approach to the music which is occasionally cut with some sweeter strings, yet still in a way that preserves the moody vibe of the other cuts! There's one "momento sexy" in the mix, but most of the tunes stay in this formation – kind of a mix of drama with slight currents of Italian warmth. Instantanea Per Un Delitto is a standout score right from the start – especially since the whole thing begins with a tune titled "I Want To Die" – a vocal number that's followed by a fair bit of other vocal tunes too – rockish numbers that almost feel like they were lifted from some Mike Curb/AIP soundtrack in the US – with titles that include "Back To My Baby", "My Sleeping Lady", "Pro9mise", "A Trip Around The World", and "Woman Pig". The soundtrack Diario Segreto Un Carcere Femminile follows – a mix of shorter tunes and warmer themes – sometimes in a lightly erotic mode, but also balanced with a bit of action too – and nice use of spare guitar and piano to evoke some nicely moody moments. There's a few tunes with fuller woodwinds and strings – a nice touch, and much more sensitive than usual for Bixio! Last up is the score for Il Tuo Piacere E'Il Mio – music that's filled with all sorts of weird touches – from spare recorder or harpsichord lines, to some offbeat churchy vocals – used on short tunes that end up with a pretty spooky vibe overall! The 2CD set features 63 tracks in all – done in the great quality we've really come to appreciate from the Quartet label. CD

✨✧ Philippe SardeMax Et Les Ferrailleurs/Vincent, Francois, Paul, Et Les Autres ... CD
CAM/Quartet (Spain), Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A pair of obscure soundtrack gems from Philippe Sarde – back to back on a single CD! First up is Max Et Les Ferrailleurs – an excellent funky French soundtrack! Philippe Sarde scored the music for this obscure film starring Michel Piccoli and Romy Schneider – and the best cuts have a cool French jazz sound that mixes guitar, vibes, trumpet, and hard on-the-beat vamping by the bass and drums. You may know the cool cut "Juke Boxes Chez Saidani" from a few compilations, and the album's got a few more cuts that have a variation on a similar theme. "Juke Boxes" features great popping bass and electric sitar – and other tracks include "Le Bal Des Ferrailleurs", "Description Des Ferrailleurs", and "Generique". Vincent, Francois, Paul, Et Les Autres has a sound that's maybe more in keeping with some of the richer modes you might know from Philippe Sarde – that special sense of fragile emotion that can make his music so powerful, even when subtle – which it definitely is here at points, although balanced with some beautiful orchestrations handled by Hubert Rostaing, and bandoneon solos from Marcel Azzola. Titles include "Route De Nuit", "Cours A L'Argent", "Catherine", "Taxi", "Convalescence", and "Autrefois". CD

✨✧ Kanye WestLate Registration ... CD
Def Jam, 2005. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
We loved the debut as much as the rest of the world did, but this one's an easier listen from beginning to end. The production is tight, the guests earn their spots, and the whole thing's furiously soulful. Much is being made of LA hipster/orch pop troubadour Jon Brion's co-production, but this is Kanye's show. On one level Kanye can rock a subject as cliched as "Gold Digger", and still come out with a fresh perspective that runs deeper than it sounds on the surface, then deliver a serious track about the evils of the diamond trade that still rocks the ice. And those are just the first singles. Another great one! Tracks include "Wake Up Mr West", "Heard 'Em Say", "Touch The Sky" feat Lupe Fiasco, "Gold Digger" feat Jamie Foxx, "Drive Slow" feat Paul Wall & GLC, "My Way Home" feat Common, "Crack Music" feat Game, "Roses", "Bring Me Down" feat Brandy, "Diamonds From Sierra Leone" (rmx) feat Jay-Z, "We Major" feat Nas & Really Doe, "Gone" feat Consequence & Cam'Ron and more! ✨✧ CameoCardiac Arrest/We All Know Who We Are ... CD
Chocolate City/Superbird (UK), 1975/1978. New Copy ... $12.99 16.99
Great Mid 70s records from Cameo – Cardiac Arrest from 1975 and We All Know Who We Re from 1977 – together in a single set! Cardiac Arrest is excellent early work from the group. It's got a really sublime approach – tightly funking, but not too fast, in the mode of some of their weaker 80s material. The band have that tightly snapped groove firmly in place – as you'd already know if you've heard the album's classic sample cuts, "Rigor Mortis" and "Post Mortem". Other tracks include "Funk, Funk", "Find My Way", and "Good Times" – and the record's one of the best of the bunch from this period! We All Know Who We Are is of the most overlooked Cameo albums – and one we go back to more than the rest! Unlike some of the group's other funk-heavy outings, this one's nicely restrained, with a sophisticated ensemble soul style that reminds us of the best mid 70s work by Earth Wind & Fire. A real highlight is the smooth stepping title cut – "We All Know Who We Are" – a wonderfully catchy number that's also got a really righteous message, and kind of a "Damn Right I Am Somebody" intro, with the band rapping to each other before the song starts. Other tracks include "It's Serious", "Inflation", and "Stand Up". CD

Chocolate City, 1979. Very Good ... $6.99
A sweet stunner from Cameo – a set that's got the group working with an even tighter, more on the money sound than before – yet never in a way that's too slick or commercial! These guys were one of the first to push the big ensemble funk sound into a leaner approach, and they really live up to that legacy here – impeccably fusing bass, drums, and everything else together – in a groove that lived far beyond disco, really influenced both hip hop and house, and which makes the album one of their real lasting treasures. Groovers include "Macho", "Find My Way", "Energy", and "I Just Want To Be" – and the album also includes the guitar-funk jammer "The Rock", and the stellar stepper "Sparkle" – which is one of our favorite Cameo cuts ever! A pair of killers from Cameo – both from their legendary late 70s run! Ugly Ego is one of our favorite albums ever from Cameo – the group's third release! The album's got a great approach that hints at more sophisticated soul styles, but which is still firmly in charge of the bass-driven grooves that made their early albums so great – a compressed approach to the music that was copied by countless other groups at the time, but rarely came off this well! The whole thing's great – filled with excellent cuts that include "I'll Be With You", "Give Love a Chance", "Ugly Ego", "Two of Us", "Friend to Me", "Insane", and "I Want You". Super-dope – with loads of great jams! Secret Omen is a sweet stunner from Cameo – a set that's got the group working with an even tighter, more on the money sound than before – yet never in a way that's too slick or commercial! ✨✧ Glen CampbellGentle On My Mind/By The Time I Get To Phoenix ... CD
Capitol/BGO (UK), 1967/1968. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A pair of Capitol Records classics from Glenn Campbell – back to back on a single CD! First up is Gentle On My Mind – an insanely wonderful early album from Glenn Campbell – the kind of music that's not really rock, pop, or country – but instead a unique summation of all, at a level that only Campbell could do this well The album kicks off with the sublime pop hit "Gentle On My Mind" – one of those jangly tunes that we could listen to forever – and then soars into a beautiful blend of tunes from different sources, including covers of Nilsson's "Without Her", Rod McKuen's "The World I Used to Know", Jimmie Rodgers' "It's Over", and Donovan's "Catch The Wind" – as well as the huge hit "Mary In The Morning". Glenn's got a hell of a voice – and it sounds great on all the tracks! By The Time I Get To Phoenix begins with Glenn Campbell's amazing take on the title tune by Jimmy Webb – a pure moment of 60s genius! The pairing of Glen Campbell and Jimmy Webb is probably one of the greatest ideas ever in the history of pop music – as you'll hear on the album's title track, "By The Time I Get To Phoenix". Glen's original hit version of the song – written by a wee Jimmy at a young age – forever cut the way for his unique blend of pop, country, and easy vocal styles. The tune also kicks off this pretty nice little album of tracks that features great lesser known numbers, including some surprisingly great country covers. Titles include "Back In The Race", "My Baby's Gone", "Tomorrow Never Comes", "Bad Seed", "Love is A Lonesome River", and "I'll Be Lucky Some Day". CD

Ropeadope, 2020. New Copy ... $8.99 14.99
A wonderful debut from Gorden Campbell – an underground soul singer on the contemporary LA scene, and one who works here with some of the same collaborative power as the jazz musicians in the city in recent years! Gorden claims inspiration from Terrace Martin, who's on the set, in a lineup that also includes Kamasi Washington – but apart from the bigger names, the whole thing is really an overall effort from everyone involved – great musicians who help shift the vibe with each track, but keep things unified over the strong vocals and message-minded music that Campbell lays down – tunes that include "Too Many Lost", "One Mind", "6 In The Mornin", "Play Somethin", "Initiate", "Song In 6", "Wherever", and "Purify Me". Jimmy Carroll/Red CampSpeed the Parting Guest/Hot-Tempered Clavichord ... CD
Cook, Mid 50s. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99 16.98
Great work from the legendary Cook label – a full album that combines two earlier 10" albums of experimental sounds! First up is Speed The Parting Guest, a wonderful combination of music and sound effects – very similar to some of the bigger label work from artists like Jack Fascinato or Dean Elliott over at Capitol Records in the late 50s, but an even more sonically-sensitive session done for the smaller Cook imprint! Jimmy Carroll leads an assortment of vibes, bells, harps, toys, percussion, and other odd instruments – all in a weird and playful mix of melodies that almost come across like mini-cartoons in sound! There's not much in the way of larger or conventional instrumentation – which makes Jimmy's work even different than bigger label experiments like this – and the recording quality from Cook really makes all the odd sounds come through with great clarity! Titles include "Happy Little Woodpile", "Tinkle Tinkle Little Bell", "Speed The Parting Guest", and "Hong Kong Local". Next up is The Hot Tempered Clavichord – a session that features mostly clavichord musings from Red Camp – more of a rootsy pianist on other records, but working here on an electrified clavichord – which is a bit like an electric harpsichord in sound, only rougher! The tracks are these cool electric boogie-woogie numbers – and include "Ragout", "Blues In Minore", and "The One I Love". CD

Michael FeinbergFrom Where We Came ... CD
Steeplechase (Denmark), 2020. Used ... $9.99
Bassist Michael Feinberg has a round, rich tone on this record, right from the start – a great way of setting up a superb lineup that features Dave Liebman on soprano sax, Noah Preminger on tenor, Gary Versace on piano, and Ian Froman on drums! Liebman's sharpness is balanced wonderfully by the depth of Preminger – a twin-reed pairing that really makes the album sound like something special, and different – very much living up to the spirit of the strong original material by Feinberg, which comprises the entire set. The quality of the record is a bit hard to describe in words, but if you know the players, the meeting is even better on record than it is on paper – on titles that include "Louisville", "Cairo", "Nogales", "Tokyo", "East St Louis", and "Pontiac". We can always trust Nico Fidenco to give us a sexy soundtrack – and this time around, he definitely does that, but also adds in a fair bit more too – nicely balancing some of the erotics of the film with some of the darker passages in the story! If you only know Fidenco from sexploitation scores, you'll find some surprises here – including lots of nice violin solos that give the music ties to more sensitive scoring, including some of the 70s French work of composers like Georges Delerue or Philippe Sarde! There's a bit of electric instrumentation on the set, but most of the moments are acoustic – a nice surprise for a 1980 vintage soundtrack from Italy – and the set features 25 titles in all. CD

Possibly the best ever from LA punk pioneers The Flesh Eaters – who were a vital piece of the nascent days of SoCal punk for around a half decade by this point in the early 80s, but were arguably just now hitting their strongest creative stride! They're a bit akin to X in the way they show some love for their primal rock & roll forbears, loose and caustic as their tributes may be, and without compromising their edge. They also have some longer songs, a sax player, and other interesting facets that stand aside of punk orthodoxy. Brilliant stuff! A set that's maybe a bit more searing than earlier records from Cameron Graves – more full-on fusion at times, although still with some of the spacier elements we liked from before – yet definitely driven at points with the kind of energy that recalls the George Duke/Stanley Clarke experiments of the 70s! The rhythms at the core are really on fire – drums from Mike Mitchell and bass from Max Gerl – and the guitar of Colin Cook often matches the bold lines of Graves on piano and keyboards. Garland GreenLove Is What We Came Here For (with bonus tracks) ... CD
RCA/Expansion (UK), 1977. New Copy ... $8.99 16.99
An overlooked late 70s moment from the great Garland Green – a set that's quite different than his earlier Chicago soul – thanks to production from Leon Haywood in a sweet west coast mode! The record's got an easygoing vibe that really fits the cover – a mix of mellow and midtempo tracks that Garland does especially well – plus a few groovers too. That deep, rich tone that Green brought to his music is perfect for the warmer touches that Leon creates in the backings – and the whole thing's almost got that mix of deep and modern soul than was brewing out of some of the hipper corners of the south at the time. Arrangements are by Haywood with Gene Page and Tony Coleman – and titles include "I've Quit Running the Streets", "Moody Woman", "Love Is What We Came Here For", "I Found Myself When I Lost You", "Lovin You Baby", "Let Me Be Your Pacifier", and "Let's Celebrate". CD features 3 bonus tracks – "Don't Let Love Walk Out On Us", "Ask Me For What You Want", and "Shake Your Shaker (single version)". CD

Les Masques with Le Trio CamaraBrasilian Sound ... LP
CBS/Le Tres Jazz Club (France), Mid 60s. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99
Groovy groovy groovy! Les Masques were a 60s vocal-oriented Brazilian combo from France, and they had a tight jazzy approach that was similar to Sergio Mendes and Brazil 66! That alone would be enough to make them #1 in our book – but they also get some excellent backing from the Trio Camara, who back the band with some nice organy riffs, and a very tight rhythm section! The whole thing's a great lost bit of Braziliana – with that crossover sound that you'll hear on the best 60s and 70s European recordings of this sort. Includes the great groover "Il Faut Tenir", which has shown up on a few compilations over the years – plus "Mais Un Jour", "Enfer", "Echo", "Un Regard .. Wes MontgomeryBack On Indiana Avenue – The Carroll DeCamp Recordings (180 gram pressing) (2019 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Resonance, Late 50s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $48.99
Really fantastic early work from guitar genius Wes Montgomery – a series of live recordings from his Indianapolis roots – done at a level that's quite different than his bigger records of the 60s! Even at this early age, Wes is already a chromatic master – able to get sounds out of his guitar that are so different than most of his contemporaries – playing in a small combo mode on most tracks, but with less of the R&B influence than most postwar guitarists. Instead, Montgomery is pure jazz all the way through, but also without that too-clean tone that some folks were going for – just a great focus on color and open, honest tone – in the company of musicians who include Carl Perkins and Buddy Montgomery on piano, Mel Rhyne on Hammond, Monk Montgomery on bass, David Baker on trombone, and David Young on tenor. Those last two players only make a few appearances – as most groups are horn-less, which gives Wes even more solo space – on titles that include "Four", "Between The Devil & The Deep Blue Sea", "It's You Or No One", "Ecaroh", "Sandu", "Whisper Not", "Four On Six", "Mr Walker", "Round Midnight", "West Coast Blues", "Tune Up", "So What", and "The End Of A Love Affair". A wonderfully old school set from Pete Rock and Camp Lo – beats by the former, rhymes by the latter – and guest work from a host of talents who include Talib Kweli, Uncle Murda, MOP, Tyler Woods, and Mac Miller! The whole thing's got a great 90s hip hop vibe – Pete Rock very much at the top of that style he helped forge back in the day – and the MCs serving up the sorts of modes we used to love hearing from stations on the left end of the dial, late in the night! Nobody's trying to break any boundaries, but maybe that's what makes the record so great – with titles that include "You Never Seen A City Like This", "Love Traps", "80 Blocks From Tiffany's", "Glitter & Gold", "Dream Journey", "Pot A Butta", "Clean Getaway", and "Ladies & Gentlemen". Barre PhillipsThirty Years In Between (Ahoy/Camouflage) ... CD
Victo (Canada), 1989/2020. New Copy 2CD ... $19.99
A pair of different performances from this legendary bassist – each recorded thirty years apart! The set begins with Ahoy – a sublime solo set recorded at Victoriaville in 2019 – a performance done by a very aged Phillips, but a musician who's clearly very much in control of his instrument – able to handle the bass with the range of colors and approaches that made him one of the key talents on his instrument to emerge in the 60s! Some passages are fiercely plucked, others are beautifully bowed – and there's almost a balance here between some of Barre's more spacious performances for ECM, and his more dynamic side of free improvisation. Titles include "What To Do What To Do", "Abate Arise", "Ahoy", "You There On The Hill", "A New Take", and "A Quake's A Coming". Camouflage is a really unique album from bassist Barre Phillips – a set recorded right in the middle of his career, at a time when his sense of new ideas was non-stop and everflowing! This album features Barre on solo bass, but playing with tapes – at a level that sometimes seems to have him overdubbed on a second bass, but also improvising alongside other sounds that appear in the mix – very much with the spirit of a set of live duo or trio improvisations, although with Barre always at the center of attention! Titles include "Twist & Parry", "Covered", "Camouflage", "You & Me", "Around Again", and "No Exclusion". CD

One of the coolest classics from the glory days of the Italian soundtrack scene – a set that perfectly brings together all the funky, jazz, and mod-styled touches of the great Piero Piccioni – on a record that's maybe had more life over the years than the film did on the screen! The mix of instruments here is completely sublime – with some especially wonderful use of Hammond, but with very offbeat sounds – next to flute, warmer woodwinds, and some wicked basslines that hit the hippest sort of funk soundtrack modes. The recording quality is amazing, too – with unusual isolation and shading used on the instruments, to further make the sound magic – and titles include "Funky Lovers", "Pearls", "Slow Flute Beat", "Charms", "Brasil 2000", "Tears In Brasil", "Camille 2000", and "Tears In Rome". Rare bossa from the Mexican scene of the 60s – played by a very hip quintet with Breno Sauer on vibes and Claudio Roditi on trumpet and vocals! The group's got a groove that extrapolates Brazilian rhythms nicely – a take on bossa nova that's a bit like some of the American work of the same time, with elements of jazz and pop folded into the tunes nicely – never in a cheesy, commercial way – but in a sunny style that really opens up the sound! The combo's actually led by pianist Joao Peixoto Primo – who also plays organ on the set too – but arrangements are by Sauer, and the groove is a bit like his own great albums of the 60s. Titles include "San Salvador", "O Pato", "Brasilia", "Call Me", "Deixa Isso Pra La", "Trigulim", "Samba De Verao", and "Voce". LP, Vinyl record album

We've not heard much from pianist Christoph Stiefel, but this is a set that will definitely have us seeking out more – as Stiefel's got this really mature, fully-formed approach to his music – one that takes the trio setting of the record far past any familiar expectations, thanks to some really well-written originals, and a great sense of balance between the piano, bass, and drums. The other two instruments are handled by Michel Benita and Joel Allouche, respectively – and Stiefel allows them plenty of roles in the overall sound far past traditional timekeeping – which also seems to open up his own sense of timing and expression. Albore Jazz (Japan), 2017. Used Gatefold ... $9.99
A rock-solid trio session, with a top-shelf Italian groove pedigree – as the group features two members from Berardi Jazz Connection, and the pianist from Quintetto X! You might remember those two groups from their more club jazz-oriented projects from the previous decade or two – but this time around, all three musicians are in a straighter jazz vein – yet still one that's filled with plenty of rhythm! The piano, bass, and drums come together fantastically here – with Pietro Vincenti on acoustic keys, Camillo Pace on bass, and Francesco Lomagistro on drums – romping together through some great titles of their own, and a few really excellent remakes as well. And while the focus on rhythm is quiet strong, Vincenti gets off some especially great solo moments too – breaking from the bass and drums, while still holding their energy – in a way that almost seems inspired by classic Brazilian trios of the 60s. Titles include versions of Gary Bartz's "Libra", Billy Taylor's "I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free", and Prince's "Sign Of The Times" – plus the originals "Pharoah Of Love", "Sad Devil", "Desert Highway", and "The Long Goodbye". One of THE spoken word classics of the 70s funk years – an amazing album based around the poetry of Camille Yarbrough – set to some amazing funky backings! The sound here is incredibly righteous – almost a more sophisticated version of Betty Davis – done with a stark, spare groove that makes the bass bits and drums really come out in the mix! Camille's got a heck of a lot of personal vision, and really works the album together as a whole – making for a set that's far more than just "poetry plus music" – and instead an audio tapestry with an incredibly deep sound! Includes a heavy rap on the streets that culminates in the great "Little Sally the Super Sex Star" – plus the classic "Take Yo Praise", which was sampled famously by Fatboy Slim – and the cuts "Can I Get A Witness" and "All Hid". ✨✧ VariousCameroon Garage Funk ... CD
Analog Africa (Germany), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $17.99 18.99
We're not sure we've ever heard the term "garage funk" before, but it certainly fits the vibe of this sweet little collection – even though all the tracks here were actually recorded in a church! Not that the music is religious, though – the funky sounds within are certainly secular – it's just that in the city of Yaounde in the 70s, the recording services in a local church were one of the few spots that a local up and coming act could lay down a few tracks for themselves – music that's captured here in a stunning assortment of rare tunes that mostly never saw the light of day at the time! Imagine some of the more popular sounds you know from West Africa in the 70s, then imagine them stripped down to the core – and captured with a rough-edged vibe that makes the music really leap from the grooves, even all these many years later. The approach results in sounds that you'd maybe hear if you stumbled upon a box of small label funky 45s in the back corner of a local market at the end of the 70s – but presented here with the detailed notes, full history, and spectacular sound that have made us love the Analog Africa label over the years. Titles include "Sie Tcheu" by Joseph Kamga, "Ma Wde Wa" by Los Camaroes, "Yondja" by Ndenga Andre Destin Et Les Golden Sounds, "Odylife" by Damas Swing Orchestra, "Quier Wapatcha" by Charles Lembe, "Africa Iyo" by Jean Pierre Djeukam, "Woman Be Fire" by Lucas Tala, "Mezek Me Mama" by Mballa Bony, and "Moni Ngan" by Willie Songue Et Les Showmen. AB Skhy are one of those totally great late 60s groups who never fully got their due – overflowing with instrumental chops and bearing a really sharp sound – but never hitting the mark that they should have with this well-done debut! The group push blues influences into psych, and come up with a heady brew that's really wonderful – filled with the usual guitar, bass, and drums – but also given lots of wicked organ work from Howard Wales – who some folks know for a later recording with Jerry Garcia! Everyone is completely top-shelf here – and the group bring in some horns and guest harmonica from Jim Liban – really pushing their sound on titles that include "Camel Back", "24 Hours", "Upsets Me Baby", "Of All Sad Words", "Understand", and "Love Isn't". Pepper AdamsTwelfth & Pingree ... CD
Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1975. New Copy ... $13.99
Exactly the kind of session that really lets Pepper Adams show his stuff – full of long, live tracks that really have Adams stretching out on baritone – handling the instrument with soul, depth, and dexterity that might well be unmatched during this point in his career! The quartet here features Walter Norris on piano, George Mraz on bass, and Makaya Ntshoko on drums – and while all players are excellent, especially Mraz, it's really Pepper whose shining light guides the session – both on his original tunes "Bossa Nouveau" and "12th & Pingree" – and on nice takes on "Well You Needn't" and "A Child Is Born". African Music MachineBlack Water Gold ... LP
Soul Power, 1972/1974. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $11.99
Incredible work from the obscure African Music Machine – a southern funk combo led by bassist Louis Villery – a legendary batch of funky singles, finally brought together as a full album! The band has a very unique sound that involves a lot of rolling bubbling basslines, spacey organ grooves, tight choppy guitar riffs, and punchy horn blasts – almost with the African elements promised in the title, but served up with a deeper funk sound all the way through! In a way, the group's a bit like Cymande or some of the other 70s hybrid ensembles – yet they've got a lot less dub, a much more direct funky groove, and plety of raw southern elements in the mix as well! This is the funky 45 material we first cut our teeth on back in the day – and the original singles are legendary! Includes massive cuts like "Black Water Gold (Pearl)", "A Girl In France", "Never Name A Baby (Before It's Born), "Making Nassau Fruit Drink", "Camel Time", "The Dapp", "Tropical", and "Mr. Brown". Al Dos BandDoing Our Thing With Pride ... LP
Warmer/Kalita (UK), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $28.99
A record that barely made a ripple at the time it came out, but which is a real indie gem from the underground scene of the 70s! Al-Dos Band are a group who are equally well-trained in soul music and gospel – and they seem to stick more in secular territory on the record, but certainly infuse their music with a great sense of spirit – a soaring sort of quality that definitely lives up to the pride in the title! Themes of religion are mostly on the backburner, but the group often has the vocals rise up together in righteous harmony – sometimes over club-tinged grooves that have a nicely funky edge, sometimes on mellower tunes that bring out even more shimmer in the vocals. Titles include "Look To The Sky", "Love Jones Coming Down", "Confusion", "Some Things Don't Mean A Thing", "Dream Song", "Doing Our Thing With Pride", and "Your Presence". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Luther AllisonLuther's Blues ... LP
Gordy, 1974. Near Mint- ... $24.99
One of the only blues records you'll ever find on Motown – and a mostly straight blues affair with a hard electric sound to it. The album's mostly in the early Alligator Records camp – but there's a few nice funky cuts, like "Now You Got It" and "Into My Life", which both have strong rhythm backing, and a smoother groove that kind of cuts the blues quotient a bit. That's a good thing for us, in case you couldn't tell! LP, Vinyl record album

Gregg AllmanLaid Back ... LP
Capricorn, 1973. Very Good Gatefold ... $11.99
Greg Allman's excellent solo debut – all the more impressive given that it came out just weeks apart from the Allman Brothers' classic Brothers & Sisters – here's a southern rock legend stepping out and showing different sides of his immense talent around the same time his band was also near a creative peak! Greg's uniquely expressive voice is in the spotlight here, on tunes that touch on laid back southern rock, but gospel blues & soul tinged, too, sans guitar heroics for the most part. Includes the eternally great "Midnight Rider", "Queen Of Hearts", "Please Call Home", "Don't Mess Up A Good Thing", a really cool country rock take on "These Days", "Multi-Colored Lady", "All My Friends" and certainly only of the fresher takes "Will The Circle Be Unbroken". Herb AlpertRise ... LP
A&M, 1979. Near Mint- ... $11.99
A whole new level of genius for Herb Alpert – a record that's light years away from his earlier work with the Tijuana Brass, and which has the trumpeter stepping strongly into the world of smooth jazzy fusion! The title track here went platinum the minute it was released – and became an end-of-the 70s instrumental anthem that seemed to drift out of speakers around the country. The rest of the album's pretty great too – built on the modes explored by Donald Byrd, Freddie Hubbard, and other soulful fusion players of the 70s – but cast out with a bit more drama overall. Titles include the seminal jazz dance classic "Rotation" – plus "Rise", "Street Life", "Aranjuez (Mon Amour)", "1980", "Angelina", and "Love Is". LP, Vinyl record album

Franco AmbrosettiHeart Bop ... CD
Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1981. New Copy ... $13.99
That's "heart bop", not "hardbop" – a title that really gets at the warm feeling and sense of soul on this overlooked date! The album's an early 80s gem from Enja – cut at a time when the label was really finding its own, and doing an especially great job of giving musicians just the right sort of outlet to move forward – in this case not just trumpeter Franco Ambrosetti, but also altoist Phil Woods and pianist Hal Galper – all of whom are great! There's an angular formation to most of the tunes at the start, but they flow with a warm, lyrical energy right from the start as well – supported by the drums of Billy Hart and bass of Mike Richmond – on titles that include "A Flat Miner", "Fairy Boat To Go", "Heart Bop", and "Triple Play". Franco AmbrosettiTentets ... CD
Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1985. New Copy ... $13.99
We're not sure why, but it always feels like Franco Ambrosetti sounds even better in a larger group than a small one – and that's definitely the case here, where his work on flugelhorn soars out wonderfully in a ten piece lineup, one that's driven by all these great arrangements that are full of color, joy, and life! All the horn players are pretty wonderful too – and the set features work from Lew Soloff and Mike Mossman on trumpets, Steve Coleman on alto, Howard Johnson on baritone, Mike Brecker on tenor – given a nice kick by the trio Tommy Flanagan on piano, Dave Holland on bass, and Daniel Humair on drums – all working together perfectly as a unit, as if they've been that way for years – while still allowing all these great breakout solos along the way. Titles include the tunes "Ten & Eleven", "Ode To A Princess", "Yes Or No", "Rio Morena Allegro Con Brio", and "Autumn Leaves". CD

Area Code 615Trip In The Country ... LP
Polydor, 1970. Near Mint- ... $24.99
At the core, these guys were more of a bluegrass combo – but they picked up some funky rocking soul somewhere along the way, and became one of the 70s hippest instrumental ensembles! The album's got some really excellent numbers that start with funky rhythms, and which throw in a lot of countrified instrumentation for a very unique sound. Includes the nicely breaking "Russian Red", plus "Stone Fox Chase", "Sligo", "Katy Hill", "Welephant Walk", "Devil Weed & Me", and "Gray Suit Men". LP, Vinyl record album

Arrested Development3 Years, 5 Months, & 2 Days In The Life Of ... CD
Chrysalis, 1992. Used ... Just Sold Out!
The debut of Arrested Development – a worthy critical favorite early in it's release cycle the went on the dismissed by lot of hip hop heads after it became a hit – and a solid, spiritually resonant effort well worth a reappraisal after all these years! They really was no other hip hop group quite like Arrested Development, then or now – led by producer, writer, vocalist Speech, with a solid bedrock of classic samples and live band instrumentation. Good stuff. Tracks include "Man's Final Frontier", "Mama's Always On Stage", "People Everyday", "Blues Happy", "Mr Wendal", "Children Play With Earth", "Raining Revolution", "Fishin 4 Religion", "Give A Man A Fish", "U", "Eve Of Reality", "Natural", "Dawn Of The Dreads", "Tennessee", and "Washed Away". Dorothy AshbyIn A Minor Groove/Hip Harp ... CD
Prestige, 1958. New Copy ... $11.99 12.98
2 of Dorothy Ashby's classic Prestige sessions – back to back on one CD! First up is material from Hip Harp – great stuff by the grooviest artist ever to play a harp! Dorothy Ashby had a unique soul jazz harp sound, and although the instrument she used is probably more thought of in terms of bedtime lullabies, she actually makes it swing nicely, and with a soulful sound that draws back to traditions of African stringed instruments. Ashby was part of the same scene as Yusef Lateef, and like Lateef, she managed to use odd instrumentation in new contexts, to get a very unique jazz sound. This set's got harp and flute in the lead, and features the tracks "Pawky", "Charmaine", "Jollity", and "Back Talk". On In A Minor Groove, Ashby swings with an other-wordly quality that's simply amazing, quite exotic, and very much in the camp of players like Yusef Lateef or Les Jazz Modes, who were trying similar experiments in jazz. This session features Dorothy in a quartet with the flute of Frank Wess, the bass of Herman Wright, and the drums of Roy Haynes, whose warm lyrical touches provide the perfect melodicism for the group. Titles include "Rascallity", "Bohemia After Dark", "Taboo", "Autumn In Rome", and "It's A Minor Thing". CD

Tyrone Ashley's Funky Music MachineLet Me Be Your Man ... LP
Truth & Soul, Late 60s/Early 70s. Near Mint- ... $14.99
Lost funky soul from Jersey – incredible workby Tyrone Ashley & The Funky Music Machine – a rare batch of gritty harmony soul and some mighty funky numbers! Tyrone, aka Sonny Campbell, and the Machines were contemporaries of the Parliaments and future P-Funkers George Clinton and Bernie Worrell in 1960s Plainfield, NJ – and they just missed some opportunities to make it in the national landscape. They ended up working with the Phil LA Of Soul label out of Philly in the late 60s, which resulted in one great single and an LP that was never released. The deep funky soul diggers at Truth & Soul have put together some of the Phil LA Of Soul tracks plus previously unreleased material cut at Ashley's own Record Hut studio during this period – great stuff that rolls from the grittiest of harmony group soul, with soaring lead vocals – to some straight killer funk tunes! Incredible stuff! Tracks include "Come On Home", "Just A Little While Longer", "I Can't Help Myself", "For Your Love", "Let Me Be Your Man" (inst), "Sing A Song Sister", "Can't Stay Away", "Love Sweet Love", "Gotta Clean Up The World" (Pt 1 & Pt 2), "I Want My Baby Back" (inst) and "Does Frankie Ever Call My Name. LP, Vinyl record album
