DJ CamLiquid Hip Hop ... LP
Nocturne (France), 2004. Near Mint- 2LP ... $19.99
A fluid set of groovy turntablism from DJ Cam! This time out Cam seems to just as eagar give to nod to some of the other titans of DJ culture as he is to move his own work forward – and it's that aristocratic method that really puts the record over. He's got the scratch-and-sample bite of primo on one track, mirrors the baroque G Funk sound on another, gets the Detroit synth groove out on another. . .get the gist? Another solid LP from one of the most reliable DJ/headliners in the game! Tracks include "Premier", "Sense", "Ghetto Superstar", "Espionage" featuring Guru, "The L", "Don Dada", "Liquid Hip Hop", "Kalimba Groove", "Love Junkee" featuring Jay Dee and Cameo (it's as ill as you'd think) and "Comewithastring". Streetjazz/Diggers Factory (France), Mid 90s. New Copy (reissue)... About July 15, 2020 (delayed)
One of the first, and best, releases of abstract vibes/hip hop jazz beats – put together by the legendary French DJ Cam, and still one of the best albums he ever did. The album's more than a few years old, but take our word for it when we say that it still sparkles like some of the best new funky we're work stocking! Titles include "Gangsta Shit", "Mad Blunted Jazz", "Return Of The Jedi", "Other Aspects", and "Suckers Never Play That". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ DJ Cam QuartetEssential (yellow vinyl pressing) ... LP
Attytude/Diggers Factory (France), 2000s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great collection of work from one of our favorite side of the many talents of DJ Cam – his Quartet material, which is a more jazz-based take on the hip hop modes of his early days! Right from the start, Cam had a great ear for a classic groove – and here, he takes on a set of classics from the 70s, but set to his own beats and scratches, mixed with work on keyboards from Eric Legnini, trumpet from Alex Tassel, and guitar from Christian Brun! There's a bit of vocals on the record from Inlove, but most of the tracks are instrumental – and titles include "Think Twice", "Everybody Loves The Sunshine", "So What", "Montara", "Rebirth Of Cool", "You've Got To Have Freedom", and "Little Sunflower". A mighty follow up to the original Purple Haze album from Cam'ron – served up with a cover image that pictures the man himself at the cemetery, next to a gravestone with the names of Kenny Hutch, Big Joe, Murph, Big L, and others - while Cam'ron stands proud, ready to soldier on and continue! The set features work from a variety of producers – Cam & Rek, Trizzy, Infonova, Frenyc Ent, Get Larg, Heatmakerz, and others – and guest appearances from Mimi, Max B, Jim Jones, and Disco Black. Titles include "Medellin", "Toast To Me", "Keep Rising", "The Get Back", "Killa Bounce", "Straight Harlem", "Fast Lane", "This Is My City", and "Just Be Honest". LP, Vinyl record album

CAM/Four Flies (Italy), 1969. New Copy (pic cover, reissue)... $19.99
The great title track to one of the best scores from Italian maestro Stelvio Cipriani – a tune that bursts out with funky drums that kick into soaring orchestrations, topped by this wicked female vocal from Olympia – whose singing style is as vibrant as the instrumentation! Edda Dell'Orso sings on "Sophisticated Shake" on the flipside – but in that weird breathy style that she used with Ennio Morricone – more voice as sound than as lyrics, next to a hip-stepping bass and cool echoey piano! 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Franco GodiVIP Mio Fratello Superuomo (VIP My Brother Superman) ... CD
CAM (Italy), 1967. Used ... $14.99
An incredibly groovy soundtrack – penned for this 1967 film by animator Bruno Bozzetto, the man who created Signor Rossi! As with the music for Rossi, Bozzetto's working here with Franco Godi – who really gets into the spirit of the film by composing some wonderfully groovy tunes that mix together lively jazzy rhythms, scatting wordless vocals, and lots of other odd sounds and effects! The style is totally great – and although the soundtrack has a few mellower moments, there's loads and loads of really groovy numbers on the set – and they're the kind of tunes that have a sound unlike anything else we can think of! Vocals are by the chorus of Nora Orlandi, and titles include "Adamo Jeppamela", "La Crociera", "VIP", "Pesci E Mare", "Minivip Scappa", "Vip E Lotta", "Happy Betty", "Terra E Fuga Minivip", and "L'Auto Del Colonello". Gianni MarchettiIl Magnifico Tony Carrera ... LP
CAM/Transversales Disques (France), 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
A great one from Gianni Marchetti – the Italian composer we know best for his work on The Wild Eye, but who sounds equally great on this set too! The best tracks have a heavy rhythm at the bottom – not really funky, but kind of mod, and a bit more off-kilter on the slower numbers – which makes for a really compelling sound, especially next to some of the set's unusual instrumental twists. A number of the tracks feature the vocal chorus 4+4, conducted by Nora Orlandi – and they sing in a sweet and moody style that nicely offsets the groovier work by Marchetti. Titles include "Psico Classico", "Amore In Controluce", and "Psico In Controluce" – done in a number of variations, including some which are previously unreleased! LP, Vinyl record album

Ennio MorriconeLe Clan Des Siciliens (aka Il Clan Dei Siciliani) ... LP
CAM/Universal (France), 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99
Bruno Nicolai conducted this score by Morricone for the film The Sicilian Clan – a bit of a hit back in 1969, and a dark little gangster film! The soundtrack's got a number of different classic Morricone approaches – it starts with a power "boing" on the track's grooving opener, has some darker orchestral passages that glide along nicely, and mixes slow-grooving organ with a bit of whistling and more boings on other numbers! You'll love that boing – which really sets the whole thing off in a crazy mood – and you'll understand why Morricone's range of expression on the soundtrack makes it one of his biggest hits from the time! Titles include "Tema Per Le Goff", "Jeanne E La Spiaggia", "Il Clan Dei Siciliani", "Tema Italiano No 2", and "Francobolli". LP, Vinyl record album

Ennio MorriconeSpogliati Protesta Uccidi/Quando L'Amore E Sensualita ... CD
CAM (Italy), 1973/1974. Used ... $16.99
Two very sexy scores by Morricone! Spogliati Protesta Uccidi is from a strange film about the daughter of an industrialist who falls for a black revolutionary – and it's got some nice tunes that are kind of an Italian easy take on American soul music, still mostly in the lighter mode of Morricone's groovier work, but touched with some blue notes and a few all-out bits of soul instrumentation that really make them sparkle! Quando L'Amore E Sensualita is one of those soundtracks that features Morricone's great use of wordless female vocals, and it's got a dreamy ethereal quality that's extremely haunting. There's a few atonal moments, but the best bits are the ones with the vocalized theme. Titles include "Quando L'Amore E'Sensualita", "No One Can", "Sinket Primo", "Iniziazione 72", "Incubo Femmineo", "Era La Tua Purezza", "Luce Chaira Per Vergine", "Tatantella Naif", "Soluzione Borghese", and "Giochi Naif". Piero PiccioniIl Boom ... LP
CAM (Italy), 1963. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
Beautiful soundtrack work from Piero Piccioni – an early score, but filled with the kind of weird, offbeat sounds that have always made him a genius! There's a bit of a link here – between earlier Italian scoring, ala Nino Rota, and some of the later, modder sounds of Piccioni's late 60s generation – a really cool blend that comes through in the way the horns play with the rhythms, and the organ has a strange, almost outer-space sort of quality! One number has a cool batucada feel, and the whole thing's got a brilliant Italian cinematic quality – a true under-discovered gem from the great Piccioni. Titles include "Big Ben Boom", "Samba Della Ruota", "Nuovo Spleen Economico", "Organ Grinders Boom", and "Calypso Transistor". LP, Vinyl record album

Piero PiccioniLa Citta Prigioniera (with bonus tracks) ... CD
CAM/Digitmovies (Italy), 1962. Used ... $14.99
A relatively early dramatic score from Piero Piccioni – yet one that also really shows his ongoing talent for scoring the urban landscape! The film is set in Athens during WWII, and Piccioni scores the scenes with this very melancholy style that indicates the unsure sense of victory at the moment – sometimes tentative in structure, with elements that hold back and blossom slowly – other times more brooding and turgid, as if lying in wait for greater action to take place! Titles include "Tema Di Una Conzione", "Campo Lungo", "Citta Prigioniera", "Variazione", "Pedalissimo", and "Climax". CD also features a whopping 22 bonus tracks added to the original album – all previously unissued! CD

Nino RotaProvo D'Orchestra (with bonus tracks) ... CD
CAM/Music Box (France), 1979. New Copy ... $24.99
A fantastic Fellini soundtrack from Nino Rota – one that holds on to some of the best styles that the pair created in their rich legacy for film – but which also takes the music in a great new direction too! The sound is more orchestral – as you might guess from the title – and the film features a dysfunctional orchestra stands in as a metaphor for the Italian government – an ensemble who play Rota's music in this halting style, sometimes broken up with their own comments in their inability to come together – as the record builds with fantastic readings of some themes, using the best Rota modes on woodwinds and strings. Titles include the long "Prova D'Orchestra Le Interviste" – plus "Valzerino No 72", "Attesta", "Galopp", "Risaltine Maliziose", and "I Gemelli Allo Specchio". CD features 9 more bonus tracks – a great extension of the second half of the material on the original release! CD

Philippe SardeLa Valise ... CD
CAM (Italy), 1973. Used ... $19.99
A sweet little soundtrack from Phillipe Sarde – with a real mix of styles! Some of the numbers have that dreamy French sound you'll get on some of Sarde's more mellow scores – a bit airy, with floating instrumentation that sounds nice and sexy. Other tracks are more full-on – with a crashing beat and a bit of funk, in a nice action and "chase" mode – and a few tracks have vocals, but aren't as great. Overall, the score's filled with lots of great tracks – especially if you dig groovy French 70s sounds! Ttiles include "Final Pop", "Francoise", "Francesca", "La Valise", "Martini Dry", "Holiday Out", and "Un Homme & Une Girl". CD

Philippe SardeMax Et Les Ferrailleurs/Vincent, Francois, Paul, Et Les Autres ... CD
CAM/Quartet (Spain), Early 70s. New Copy ... $28.99
A pair of obscure soundtrack gems from Philippe Sarde – back to back on a single CD! First up is Max Et Les Ferrailleurs – an excellent funky French soundtrack! Philippe Sarde scored the music for this obscure film starring Michel Piccoli and Romy Schneider – and the best cuts have a cool French jazz sound that mixes guitar, vibes, trumpet, and hard on-the-beat vamping by the bass and drums. You may know the cool cut "Juke Boxes Chez Saidani" from a few compilations, and the album's got a few more cuts that have a variation on a similar theme. "Juke Boxes" features great popping bass and electric sitar – and other tracks include "Le Bal Des Ferrailleurs", "Description Des Ferrailleurs", and "Generique". Vincent, Francois, Paul, Et Les Autres has a sound that's maybe more in keeping with some of the richer modes you might know from Philippe Sarde – that special sense of fragile emotion that can make his music so powerful, even when subtle – which it definitely is here at points, although balanced with some beautiful orchestrations handled by Hubert Rostaing, and bandoneon solos from Marcel Azzola. Titles include "Route De Nuit", "Cours A L'Argent", "Catherine", "Taxi", "Convalescence", and "Autrefois". CD

✨✧ Stelvio CiprianiFemina Ridens ... LP
CAM/Four Flies (Italy), 1969. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A wonderful soundtrack from Stelvio Cipriani – penned for this 1969 Italian thriller with psycho-sexual overtones, and done with music that has elements of both! At some points, Cipriani has all the erotic touches of his best early 70s work – but at others, he uses late 60s modes that evoke Morricone and Piero Umiliani, especially the latter's playful use of instrumentation in his more outlandish soundtracks! The music grows a bit more tense as the film moves on, but usually has a sense of lightness overall – and a number of tracks feature wordless vocals, sung either by Edda Dell'Orso or I Cantori Moderni. Titles include "Week End With Mary", "Love Symbol", "Hot Skin", "Chorus & Brass Fugato", "Rendezvous In The Castle", "Femina Ridens", "The Run In The Alley", and "The Shower". LP, Vinyl record album

CAM/Music On Vinyl (UK), 1963. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A beautifully jazzy soundtrack from the great Piero Umiliani – one that features solo work by some of the key members of the Basso Valdambrini sextet! The style here is very much in the mode of the best jazz soundtracks used during the French new wave years – simple themes that burst out boldly, and allow plenty of space for jazz improvisation – often along highly rhythmic lines! The music would be very much at home in a Roger Vadim film – and includes plenty of trumpet and tenor lines throughout, plus some additional more playful bits. Nora Orlandi sings "Baby Don't Kiss Me" – and other tunes include "Notte In Algeria", "Night Twist", "Storie Proibite", "Paparazzo's Jump", "Alienazione", and "Carlo E Sofia". LP, Vinyl record album

CAM/Chris' Soundtrack Corner (Germany), 1979. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Stelvio Cipriani at his funkiest – taking all the lessons learned from his slinky, erotic sounds of the early 70s – and turning them into a mix of sweet sounds with a great late 70s vibe! Some tracks are upbeat and almost have a clubby feel, others have a great slow-stepping approach to funk – and there's a few others that are moodier, mellower instrumentals – of the sort that Stelvio first rose to fame with – but often with as much acoustic elements and percussion as his usual sweet keyboard work! Titles include the previous single – "Chicago USA" and "Percussion Gun" – both very funky tracks with a similar theme – mixed with lots of other unreleased numbers, including "Spanish Nights In Black Satin", "Lyonesse", "Changing Face", "Chicago USA 2", The Predator", "Crazy Town", and a number of other tunes with variations on the title "Scorticateli Vivi". Goblin's earlier music was more jamming – but here, they really revel in space as much as they do sound – leaving plenty of room for keyboard lines, guitar bits, and the kind of slightly-funky elements that make their music so great – in a package that pulls together some of their best cuts from the films Profondo Rosso, Roller, Chi, La Via Della Drogsa, Zombi, and Suspiria. Titles include "La Via Della Droga", "Chi (parts 1 & 2)", "Death Dies", "Trumpet's Flight", "E Suono Rock", "Zaratozom", "Zombi", "Suspiria", and "Roller". A gem of a record from maestro Morricone – even if it wasn't one of his most famous sets at the time – a soundtrack that really brings together that effortless balance of darkness and light that makes some of the best recordings by Ennio Morricone so wonderful! The set's got a few numbers with beautifully pronounced rhythms – not entirely groovers, but kind of these chunks of sound that work together to move things nicely – balanced by more mellow, spacious tunes that make tremendous use of a spare flute line, or tinkling piano! Edda Dell'Orso provides just a bit of wordless vocals – and titles include "Lungo La Stradina", "Al Confini Della Follia", "Uccidete Il Vitello Grasso", "La Fredda Lama Del Coltello", and "Scivolando Nel Buio". Kanye WestLate Registration ... LP
Def Jam, 2005. New Copy 2LP ... Just Sold Out!
Time will tell whether the sophomore LP Late Registration will prove to be as revolutionary of a commercial force as College Dropout turned out to be – but it's a better album! We loved the debut as much as the rest of the world did, but this one's an easier listen from beginning to end. The production is tight, the guests earn their spots, and the whole thing's furiously soulful. Much is being made of LA hipster/orch pop troubadour Jon Brion's co-production, but this is Kanye's show. On one level Kanye can rock a subject as cliched as "Gold Digger", and still come out with a fresh perspective that runs deeper than it sounds on the surface, then deliver a serious track about the evils of the diamond trade that still rocks the ice. And those are just the first singles. Another great one! Tracks include "Wake Up Mr West", "Heard 'Em Say", "Touch The Sky" feat Lupe Fiasco, "Gold Digger" feat Jamie Foxx, "Drive Slow" feat Paul Wall & GLC, "My Way Home" feat Common, "Crack Music" feat Game, "Roses", "Bring Me Down" feat Brandy, "Diamonds From Sierra Leone" (rmx) feat Jay-Z, "We Major" feat Nas & Really Doe, "Gone" feat Consequence & Cam'Ron and more! VariousBlue Note Revisited ... CD
Blue Note, 2004. Used ... $7.99
A dream come true! Someone at Blue Note is keeping their eyes and ears on the street and in the clubs – because here's another late model conceptual triumph – a remix project pairing current innovators in the club and hip hop underground with classic numbers from the label's vaults! The concept is simple; classic numbers are given to handpicked remixers, re-doers, and stylistic misfits best suited to re-work that particular number. Mo Wax maestros La Funk Mob open the set with a mellow, club soul tweak of Wayne Shorter's "Oriental Funk Song". Kenny Dope trips out Bobby Hutcherson's "La Malanga" into a bubbly club funk jam. "Kyoto Jazz Massive" completely re-work Eddie Henderson's "Kudu" into a wonderful number all their own. Perhaps the biggest triumph of all here is the consistency throughout; every artist attached brings their A-game (how could they do any less, given a chance to add their own elements to the some of the most influential numbers they could get their hands on?) Amazing, amazing stuff – whether it's the scratched up, hip hop flavor J Dilla brings to Jack McDuff's "Oblighetto" or the righteous electronic groove Jazzanova drops on Eddie Gale's "Song Of The Will", the minimalist, keys and beats drive Osunlade brings into Grant Green's "A Time To Remember". Every track sparkles! Other tracks include DJ Spinna/Donald Byrd "Lansanna's Priestess", 4 Hero/Horace Silver "Won't You Open Up Your Senses", DJ Cam & Erik Truffaz/Donald Byrd "The Emperor", Herbert/Michel Petrucciani "Caravan" and more! ✨✧ Marco Di Marco TrioUn Autunno A Parigi (Autumn In Paris) ... LP
Modern Jazz (Italy), 1970. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
The kind of an album that proves why Marco Di Marco is one of our favorite pianists ever – a sublime Paris session from 1970, recorded in an expansively expressive style! Di Marco has a way of penning tunes and handling the keys that's like few other players we can think of – a post-Bill Evans sense of freedom and grace, but one that's also always inflected by a strong sense of soul – one that keeps Marco's work from just being flights of fancy, and always directs the tunes with some sense of a groove, however subtle. As with some of his best trio sides, he's working here with the rhythm team of Jacky Sampson and Charles Saudrais – both borrowed from the trio of Georges Arvanitas, but giving the record a round, warm tone that they hardly ever brought to any of Georges' records! Tracks are all originals, and include "Fontainebleau", "Un Autunno A Parigi", "Le Chat Qui Peche", "Valse Pour Quatre Amis", and "Boul Mich". LP, Vinyl record album

Pascal Atangana is a hell of a singer – one who can move quickly, but with lots of deft changes – over the very dynamic rhythms provided by his excellent backing group! The sound here is amazing – and we always find ourselves wondering how a group of guys can hit such perfect grooves with just a bunch of basses, guitars, and keyboards – a totally on-the-money style that vamps, leaps, and jumps with energy throughout. The vocals are great too – bubbling up in the mix almost like another instrument – and the album's got a depth that so many other copycat funk records from the time just couldn't touch. Wonderful throughout – with tracks that include "Shake Your Pants", "Cameosis", "On The One", "We're Goin Out Tonight", and "Please You". CD

Chocolate City/Rebound, 1979. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A sweet stunner from Cameo – a set that's got the group working with an even tighter, more on the money sound than before – yet never in a way that's too slick or commercial! These guys were one of the first to push the big ensemble funk sound into a leaner approach, and they really live up to that legacy here – impeccably fusing bass, drums, and everything else together – in a groove that lived far beyond disco, really influenced both hip hop and house, and which makes the album one of their real lasting treasures. Groovers include "Macho", "Find My Way", "Energy", and "I Just Want To Be" – and the album also includes the guitar-funk jammer "The Rock", and the stellar stepper "Sparkle" – which is one of our favorite Cameo cuts ever! CameoWord Up! ... LP
Atlanta/Polygram, 1986. Very Good+ ... $11.99
A mid-80s classic from Cameo – one that showed the world that the group was still very much in the funky music game, even if their lineup had been reduced to a trio! Larry Blackmon's still at the head of the group – singing, drumming, and playing bass throughout – with plenty of support on keyboards and a variety of instruments from an army of session players called in for the record. The style's a bit less on the heavy funk tip of earlier Cameo records, but also steps along nicely in that mellower, midtempo groove that proved to be a great refuge for funk bands as the 80s wore on – a mode that's slightly romantic at times, but always handled with a bit of bounce at the bottom. Titles include "Word Up", "Candy", "She's Mine", "Don't Be Lonely", "Back & Forth", and "You Can Have The World". LP, Vinyl record album

GC CameronLove Songs & Other Tragedies (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Motown/Soulmusic.com (UK), 1974. New Copy ... $6.99 14.99
A tremendous solo act from GC Cameron – a singer who first rose to fame in The Spinners, but who really sounds wonderful on his own! GC's moved away from The Spinners here – into a wide range of styles that show him ready to take on most of the rest of the competition! He's working here with the best of the best of Motown – production from Stevie Wonder and Willie Hutch – and arrangements by both, plus Paul Riser, Gene Page, James Carmichael, and Frank Wilson – all of whom really give their best to the record, and show that Motown was putting plenty of effort into making GC one of the next big stars of the 70s. We're not sure why things never took off as strongly for Cameron, but whatever the case, the album's a great step for the solo artist – on cuts that include "If You Don't Love Me", "Tippin", "All In Love Is Fair", "If You're Ever Gonna Love Me", "Come Get This Thang", "I'm Gonna Give You Respect", and "Let Me Down Easy". CD features an insane amount of bonus tracks – 13 more tracks that include "Act Like A Shotgun", "Girl I Really Love You", "I'm Gonna Get You (parts 1 & 2)", "Don't Wanna Play Pajama Games", "You Are That Special One", "Have I Lost You", "Time", "Topics", and "No Matter Where". John CameronKes ... CD
Trunk (UK), 1969. Used ... $9.99
The long-overdue issue of material that was originally recorded for the film Kes back in 1969 – short and lovely numbers arranged and composed by Brit easy talent John Cameron! Cameron's best known for his work in more groove-oriented formats – but this soundtrack is something completely different, and equally great – a set of spare and compelling tunes played by a small combo that includes British jazz players Harold McNair, Ronnie Ross, David Snell, Tony Carr, and Danny Moss. The overall album is quite short, but it features a stunning range of sounds, tones, and colors – with a strong focus especially on the flute work of McNair, easily one of the greatest London players of his generation, and sort of England's answer to Roland Kirk. Titles include "Billy's Paper Round", "Billy Sees Kes In The Tower", "Kes First Flight", "Training Kes", "Billy Asleep In The Boiler Room", "Burying Kes", and "Foreboding". CD

KPM/Be With (UK), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
African rhythms, jazzy instrumentation, rock inspiration, and a motherlode of funky sound library grooves from two of the best British maestros working in the business! The album's an early 70s gem from the KPM catalog – one of the most sought-after records ever issued by the label – and like the rest, never really made for public sale back at the time! Despite that humble origin, though, the grooves here are right up there with the funkiest work coming out from that side of the Atlantic at the time – a brilliant post-colonial blend of acoustic percussion, electric keyboards, and a fair bit of fuzzy guitar – all presented with a stripped-down, no-nonsense approach to the rhythms that's often funkier than work by some of the bigger names in the genre. Titles include "Heavy Water", "Ice Breaker", "Solid Satin", "Punch Bowl", "Frozen Steam", and "Black Light" by Alan Parker – and "Swamp Fever", "Range Rover", "Survival", "Afro Waltz", "Heat Haze", "Rocking Rhino", and "Afro Metropolis" by John Cameron. Salsoul/Octave (Japan), 1981. New Copy ... $24.99
Rafael Cameron's in love, but he never lets his groove go down at all – thanks to some super-sharp production and arrangements from the legendary Randy Muller! Muller had great success with BT Express and Brass Construction – and he uses that style of upbeat, uptempo funk strongly here underneath Cameron's vocals – at a level that's a mix of 80s groove and electro, with lots of sweet keyboard lines that crackle perfectly alongside Rafael's vocals. There's just a few mellower moments – which remind us that Cameron can be a deeper soul singer when he wants – and titles include "Number One", "Funtown USA", "Daisy", "In Love", "Let's Get Married", and "All That's Good To Me". CD features bonus tracks – "All That's Good To Me (Francois Kevorkian 12" mix)", "Boogie's Gonna Get Ya (Francois Kevorkian 12" inst)", "Funtown USA (single version)", and "All That's Good To Me (single version)". Red CampNew Clavichord ... CD
Cook, 1957. New Copy ... $8.99 16.98
An insane album of keyboard tracks – almost as if Sun Ra was taking on an electrified version of boogie woogie! Pianist Red Camp's been recorded by the Cook label before, but this set features Red handling the clavichord – an instrument that's like a harpsichord, with a similar metallic sound overall! The approach is very odd – as Camp's work on the keys is quite dynamic and jamming, hardly the sort of take on the instrument you might expect, and one that really pushes its tones into weirdly distorted range – almost like Ra's use of the rocksichord on some of his 70s albums. The sound is amazing, and the record's unlike anything else we've heard from the time – and titles include "The Bluesando", "Nagasaki", "Alma Llanera", "Slow Slow Blues", "Prelude For Twelve Fingers", and "Twofer Atonement". Third World/17 North Parade, 1976. New Copy ... $14.99 16.98
The title's a bit confusing, but Cornell Campbell's essentially saying that he's a stalwart – something we can completely agree with, given his strong legacy in Jamaican music – and the sublime sound of a 70s classic like this! Cornell's got a higher range than some of his contemporaries, but never in a way that makes his music sound too light or airy at all – because there's a sense of soul going on that maybe stands as a Jamaican counterpart to 70s Marvin Gaye, especially in the way that Campbell inflects his notes on the sweeter tunes on the set! Most of the production is handled by Bunny Lee or Joe Gibbs – and titles include "The Gorgon", "The Stal-A-Watt", "The Investigator", "Hypocrite", "Two Face Rasta", "Two Timer", "Boxing Around", and "Bandulu". 2CD set features 19 more bonus tracks – including "Conscious Rastaman", "The Gorgon Speaks", "Help Them O Lord", "Gun Court Law", "Dance In A Greenwich Farm", "Lion Of Judah", "Natty Dread In A Greenwich Farm", "I Shall Not Remove", and "Give Me Love". Strut (UK), 2013. Used ... $6.99
A brilliant meeting of two top talents – reggae legend Cornell Campbell and underground funk combo The Soothsayers – working here together on a set that feels like it could have been pulled from the vaults of Studio One! The Soothsayers have already demonstrated their global leanings on albums of their own – and here, they display a remarkable ear for classic sounds from Kingston – working together with the tightness of some legendary reggae backing group, and really giving Campbell some of the best sonic settings he's had in years! Cornell's vocals are wonderful throughout – crackling and soulful, at a level that really lives up to his legendary status – and the production is just the right sort of laidback to make the whole thing work perfectly. Titles include "Jah Jah Me No Born Yah", "Nothing Can Stop Us", "Conqueror", "I'll Never Leave", "Ode To Joy", "With You My Heart Belongs", and "Never Give Up". CD

Capitol/BGO (UK), 1967/1968. New Copy ... $8.99 14.99
A pair of Capitol Records classics from Glenn Campbell – back to back on a single CD! First up is Gentle On My Mind – an insanely wonderful early album from Glenn Campbell – the kind of music that's not really rock, pop, or country – but instead a unique summation of all, at a level that only Campbell could do this well The album kicks off with the sublime pop hit "Gentle On My Mind" – one of those jangly tunes that we could listen to forever – and then soars into a beautiful blend of tunes from different sources, including covers of Nilsson's "Without Her", Rod McKuen's "The World I Used to Know", Jimmie Rodgers' "It's Over", and Donovan's "Catch The Wind" – as well as the huge hit "Mary In The Morning". Glenn's got a hell of a voice – and it sounds great on all the tracks! By The Time I Get To Phoenix begins with Glenn Campbell's amazing take on the title tune by Jimmy Webb – a pure moment of 60s genius! The pairing of Glen Campbell and Jimmy Webb is probably one of the greatest ideas ever in the history of pop music – as you'll hear on the album's title track, "By The Time I Get To Phoenix". Glen's original hit version of the song – written by a wee Jimmy at a young age – forever cut the way for his unique blend of pop, country, and easy vocal styles. The tune also kicks off this pretty nice little album of tracks that features great lesser known numbers, including some surprisingly great country covers. Titles include "Back In The Race", "My Baby's Gone", "Tomorrow Never Comes", "Bad Seed", "Love is A Lonesome River", and "I'll Be Lucky Some Day". CD

✨✧ Joyce CoolingCameo ... CD
Nucleus/P-Vine (Japan), 1988. New Copy ... $19.99
A breezy jazz vocal classic from the San Francisco scene of the 80s! Joyce Cooling plays guitar in a mellow jazzy way – a bit influenced by Brazilian fusion, and a bit by the CTI/Kudu styles of the mid 70s – warm and soulful, with a flowing, glowing kind of style that actually even reminds us a bit of Brazilian singer Joyce during the same period. And although Cooling's sounded a bit smooth in recent years, this album's got a nicely indie feel – a stripped-down set of grooves that's held up wonderfully over the years – and which still may be the best thing she ever recorded! Other instrumentation includes keyboards and lots of percussion – and titles include "It's You", "Ve", "The Way Out", "It's On You", and "It's Time I Do". CD

The first album recorded by singer Nkotti Francois and his Black Styls group – a combo who'd been backing Nkotti for years in clubs in Cameroon, and who work here with a very sharp sound right from the start! The instrumentation is often a bit unique – organ and guitar sometimes used with weird effects or unusual phrasing – mixed with strong basslines, and some occasional excellent tenor solos – which underscore the more soulful elements that are often brought to the record by the vocals of Francois! The singer is great, and the weird organ bits are equally nice – and very unique – on titles that include "Loko La Mboa", "O Mende Wele", "Ndola Njomba Bodi Mba Da Monjo Na Mbundo", "Natiki O Mundi Nwa Bato", "Bino Senga", and "Muboledi". An unusual 60s album that tries to link piano legend Erroll Garner to the crowds on the college campuses of the time – but with a vibe that's very different than most of the modern jazz sets that were usually issued in a similar format! This set was recorded mostly at Purdue University, and has Garner playing in a mode that's completely classic, and completely on fire – romping through tunes with this amazing deftness, alongside help from bassist Eddie Calhoun and drummer Kelly Martin. As with most Garner albums of this time, the pianist could almost be solo – as Erroll's strength and vitality on the keys is amazing – and the piano sound really seems to lead the bass and drums – not the other way around. CBS/Le Tres Jazz Club (France), Mid 60s. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
Groovy groovy groovy! Les Masques were a 60s vocal-oriented Brazilian combo from France, and they had a tight jazzy approach that was similar to Sergio Mendes and Brazil 66! That alone would be enough to make them #1 in our book – but they also get some excellent backing from the Trio Camara, who back the band with some nice organy riffs, and a very tight rhythm section! The whole thing's a great lost bit of Braziliana – with that crossover sound that you'll hear on the best 60s and 70s European recordings of this sort. Includes the great groover "Il Faut Tenir", which has shown up on a few compilations over the years – plus "Mais Un Jour", "Enfer", "Echo", "Un Regard .. One of the funkiest groups we've ever heard from the Cameroon scene – a combo who play with a super-tight sound that often has as much interplay between the vocals as the instruments at the core! As you'd guess from the three guitarists on top of the van in the cover, the group's sound is heavy on guitars – often riffing in these funky ways as the players seem to challenge each other, and create this great flow that moves between American funk and more homegrown styles. Vocals come fast and furious, and often shift between group members – really keeping pace with the energy of all the other instruments too.
