Buffalo SpringfieldBuffalo Springfield ... LP
Atco, 1966. Very Good+ ... $34.99
The landmark first album from Buffalo Springfield – a warmly collaborative record that would set the scene for countless work to come from the LA scene! Right from the start, there's something special going on here – a bit of the twang the Byrds were exploring at the time, and a very strong move past any sort of folk tendencies any of the group members might have had a few years before – but all without going into some of the too-sunny styles that were peaking in west coast pop. Instead, there's this current of darkness and subtle wit that really shines through – all without any psychedelic indulgence, and balanced perfectly amidst the guitars of Steven Stills, Richie Furay, and Neil Young – each of whom get a chance to sing on the record too. Bassist Bruce Palmer and drummer Dewey Martin complete the group – and titles include the classic "For What It's Worth" – plus "Nowadays Clancy Can't", "Leave", "Pay The Price", "Burned", "Do I Have To Come Right Out & Say It", and "Everybody's Wrong". LP, Vinyl record album

Buffalo SpringfieldBuffalo Springfield Again ... LP
Atco, 1967. Near Mint- ... $24.99
A record that's way more than just "again" – that is, a recap of the first Buffalo Springfield classic – as the set not only has the group really exploding forward, but also the individual members taking these strong steps on their own that really point towards their big legacies to follow! Neil Young grabs us with darkness on the first tune, Richie Furay warms us with some country strains on the next, and Stephen Stills moves into a space that's very much his own on the next – yet throughout it all, the record has this sense of unity that really holds up over the years – giving us depth that makes the whole thing an amazing listen time and time again. There's some key help along the way – a bit of piano from Don Randi, electric piano from Jack Nitzsche, and even some recording help from Jim Messina – all furthering the warmth of the group's approach. Titles include "Mr Soul", "Sad Memory", "Hung Upside Down", "Good Time Boy", "Rock & Roll Woman", "Broken Arrow", "A Child's Claim To Fame", and "Expecting To Fly". LP, Vinyl record album
(Yellow label pressing with Broadway address.)

Buffalo SpringfieldLast Time Around ... LP
Atco, 1968. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $29.99
The cover image here gives you an idea of what's going on – with Neil Young looking away from the rest of the group – as the album's not just the last by Buffalo Springfield, it also really shows the key members striving for a solo voice of their own! The set was released after Buffalo Springfield had already broken up, and a number of the tracks within are near-solo projects handled by Neil Young, Richie Furay, and Stephen Stills – although there's also some of those great duets that really have the group spirit shining so strongly. Jim Messina produced, and really makes sense of the material together as a whole – on titles that include "It's So Hard To Wait", "Four Days Gone", "Carefree Country Day", "Special Care", "The Hour Of Not Quite Rain", "Questions", "I Am A Child", "On The Way Home", and "Kind Woman". Mark MorrissTaste Of Mark Morriss ... CD
Acid Jazz (UK), 2015. Used ... $1.99
Solo work from Mark Morriss – formerly a member of The Bluetones, but maybe even more striking here as an artist on his own! The album features a compelling mix of covers – songs originally recorded by Jess Conrad, Scott Walker, OMD, Buffalo Springfield, Jesus & Mary Chain, Weezer, and even Madonna – but all given a very personal spin by Morriss! Mark's got this way of weaving together different 60s influences – a bit of blue-eyed pop, touches of mod or psych instrumentation, even some slightly folksy currents – all to suit the modes of the individual songs – with a mode that maybe even gets past the idea of any sort of single style for the record. Titles include "Duchess", "Self Control", "Angel", "Almost Gold", "Don't Let Go", "Love Comes Quickly", "Rock & Roll Woman", "Souvenir", "This Pullover", and "Lucretia (My Reflection)". CD

Vanguard/Craft, 1968. New Copy ... $24.99
A great first album from this unusual Florida trio – a hip little group whose members would later end up working with The Allman Brothers, Boz Scaggs, and Cowboy – but who sound plenty darn great here on their own! The style's a lot headier than you might expect – almost with some of the deeper echoes you'd expect from the LA scene of the late 60s – the post-folk explorations of the headier side of rock, done with slight psych undercurrents, and a warm vocal style that's introspective, yet never overindulgent – a really great balance that should have made these guys as big as Buffalo Springfield or Crosby Stills & Nash at the time. A few moments get somewhat heavy, but never too much so – and the album's filled with great original numbers that include "Sandcastles", "Porcelain Mirrors", "Pedestals", "A Different Kind Of Head", "Free", "Pick A Gripe", and "Cries Of Treason". Universal (Italy), 1968. New Copy 2CD ... $9.99
A 50th anniversary celebration of Italy's Capital Radio in 1968 – a set that combines familiar English rock of the late 60s with a huge amount of Italian pop as well! The mix of modes is great – and the 2CD package goes a long way towards illustrating the way that non-Anglo countries on the European scene were served some of the hipper British and American music of the time, in ways that effortlessly blend with more homegrown efforts of the era. Given that American radio was almost completely closed to non-English language tunes, there's a generosity to the spirit here that's really great – and which goes to show why Anglo rock dominated the globe so much in the following decade. Yet here, the time is 1968, the place the Italian scene – illustrated in a set of 42 tracks by artists who include Equipe 84, Caterina Caselli, Gianno Morandi, The Byrds, Beach Boys, I Dik Dik, I Nomadi, The Who, Lucia Dall, Temptations, The Band, The Rokes, Lugi Tengo, I Camaleonti, Buffalo Springfield, Velvet Underground, Otis Redding, Francoise Hardi, Giorgio Gaber, Fabrizio De Andre, Canned Heat, New Trolls, The Monkees, Serge Gainsbourg, and Mina. Even includes "I Sole E Di Tutti" by Stevie Wonder – an Italian version of "A Place In The Sun"! CD
