Broken GlassBroken Glass (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Capitol/Big Pink (South Korea), 1976. New Copy ... $18.99 22.99
The only album ever from Broken Glass – a group that features the great Stan Webb from Chicken Shack on guitar – bringing in all the strengths that he added to that well-known group! There's some of the blues rock inspiration of that earlier combo, but refined a bit more with a compressed sort of 70s Brit vibe – great production from Tony Ashton, who makes all the best licks and catchier lines of the songs really stand out – but without ever making the album sound too commercial. Titles include "It's Alright", "Keep Your Love", "It's Evil", "Ain't No Magic", "Broken Glass", "Take The Water", "Standing On The Border", and "Jersey Lightning". CD

✨✧ Elmer BernsteinSee No Evil ... CD
Intrada, 1971. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A striking 70s score from Elmer Bernstein – not one of his best-known soundtracks of the time, but a surprising standout nonetheless! There's a bold, dramatic feel to the music at first – almost like some of Bernstein's famous work of a decade before – but as things move on, he does an even better job of exploring darker corners and moodier moments – with a number of shorter tracks that burst out brilliantly, then step back quickly – almost with the variety of an Italian soundtrack of the time, especially given a few funky moments! These are a real surprise – as Bernstein breaks out with the funk and fuzz before moving back to more conventional instrumentation – and titles include "Mia's Theme", "First Record", "Pub", "Stables", "Memory", "Home Ground", and "Broken Glass". Wolf VostellDe-coll/age Musik ... LP
Multhipla/Soave (Italy), 1982. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $19.99
A collection of work drawn from decades of creations by Wolf Vostell – a founding member of Fluxus and one of the more radical musicians of the 60s – although crucially ignored in wider discussions of creative music! Vostell works here in ways that illustrate his "de-collage" concept – a reversal of musical collages taking place in other realms of the avant garde, with subtraction as the driving feature over combination. And yet at a sonic level, these creations still have a resonance with some of the tape experiments and musique concrete of Vostell's generation – especially in his sense of texture – but that also may just be a coincidence, as may of these recordings feel like they're coming from live sources – as illustrated by the cover art images of broken glass, a field of vacuum cleaners, a guitar attached to a car door, and other unusual images! ✨✧ Jaimie BranchFly Or Die Live ... CD
International Anthem, 2021. New Copy 2CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Trumpeter Jaimie Branch has been giving us great music for a number of years – but honestly, she really knocks it out of the park on this live set – a record that's even more amazing than her previous two efforts with a similar title! The set's a double-length performance – and Branch's trumpet is really just a small part of the sound – as the quartet work together in these really amazing ways – with a well-blended sound that moves into all this sonic territory way more than familiar jazz – thanks to brilliant contributions from Chad Taylor on drums and mbira, Lester St Louis on cello and cymbal, and Jason Ajemian on bass – all players who really move around a lot, shift the sound of their instruments, and step into the brilliantly creative territory opened up by the leader! Titles include "Prayer For Amerikka (parts 1 & 2)", "Twenty Three N Me (Jupiter redux)", "Reflections On A Broken Sea", "Birds Of Paradise", "Leaves Of Glass", "The Storm", "Walzer", "Sun Tines", and "Theme 001". ✨✧ George DukeGeorge Duke (1986) ... CD
Elektra (Japan), 1986. Used ... Out Of Stock
A real move forward for the George Duke keyboard sound of the 80s – and a set that has George using a fair bit of synclavier and linn drums in the mix! Things are almost even more electric than before – and that's saying a lot for Duke – with almost no acoustic instrumentation at all, save for some slight piano – and heavy electronics that not only touch the programmed rhythms, but also process some of the vocals as well! Duke's still very much in fine form, though – and his experience with generations of fusion assure that his efforts in this area are still much stronger than most, even on some of the more hook-heavy tunes in the set. There's a bit less lead vocals than before, and titles include "King For A Day", "Broken Glass", "Good Friend", "So Mean To Me", "I Can Make It Better", "African Violet", and "Stand With Your Man". CD
(Out of print, includes obi.)

✨✧ Dazz BandWild & Free (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Geffen/PTG (Netherlands), 1986. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The Dazz Band may be wild and free in the title, but the album's tighter than ever – a lean, focused approach to the Dazz Band sound – done here with loads of 80s production and instrumentation in the mix! The rhythms are heavy with drum machine lines – often mixed with keyboard bits and swirled together with a sound that's even more crossover than some of the group's earlier work. Vocals often take a back seat to the grooves – but on the ballads they shine through nicely, and remind us of the group's roots. Titles include "The Beat That's Right", "Wild & Free", "Love MIA", "Sunglasses", "Something You Said", and "Time Will Heal A Broken Heart". CD features bonus tracks – "Wild & Free (ext dance rmx)", "Last Chance For Love", "Love MIA (house mix)", and "A Place In My Heart". CD
