Tania MariaLady From Brazil ... LP
Manhattan/EMI, 1986. Near Mint- ... $2.99
You know, despite the fact that this one was recorded in the mid 80s, when we felt that Tania's great jazzy vocal style was being buried in excessive arrangements – in retrospect, it's actually got some darn nice moments. These include the great "Tanoca Vignette", a lively number that features some excellent vocal/piano interplay by Tania, produced with a bright style that brings out the best elements of the song. Another nice one is the cut "Bronx", which has a good fusiony groove to it. Other titles include "Valeu", "I Should Not Call You", and "Just Get Up", which was produced by George Duke. George OtsukaGo On ... CD
Three Blind Mice/Craftman (Japan), 1972. New Copy ... $19.99
Excellent work from Japanese drummer George Otsuka – a set that has him stepping away from his previous piano trio modes, and really making some greater magic with a larger group! The combo here is a quintet – filled with bright young players that include Shunzo Ono on trumpet and flugelhorn, Mabumi Yamaguchi on tenor and soprano sax, Toshiyuki Daitoku on Fender Rhodes and piano, and Takashi Mizuhasi on bass – all working at this soulful, spiritual level under Otsuka's leadership – never driven too strongly by the drums, but given a sense of focus and purpose that comes through in all their individual moments on the record. The album's got a special vibe that's not really fusion, but not entirely spiritual jazz either – and title sinclude "Go On", "Castaly", "Space Drive", "Isotope", and "Here's That Rainy Day". CD
(Part of the Three Blind Mice Supreme Collection!)

✨✧ Pizzicato FiveRomantique 96 ... CD
COCA (Japan), 1995. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A wonderfully sweet album from Pizzicato Five – with bits of jazz, house, and the kind of Frenchy pop you might expect from a title like "Romantique"! The whole thing's all sparkly and warm, with plenty of bright moments that keep the pace of earlier records, plus some cool mellow tracks that have a nice retro feel. Titles include "Nata Di Marzo", "The Sound Of Music", "Ice Cream Meltin Mellow", "Coda", "Tokyo, Mon Amour", "The Awakening", and "The Secret Garden". CD
(Out of print, includes slipcase and 64 page booklet.)

Miroslav Vitous GroupMiroslav Vitous Group ... LP
ECM, 1981. Near Mint- ... $14.99
A real classic from bassist Miroslav Vitous – and a record that sets up his sound with a great combination of warm tones and sharp edges! Vitous plays a deep-voiced acoustic bass all the way through – and gets some excellent accompaniment from pianist Kenny Kirkland, who adds in some bright elements that really make the session sparkle – especially when offset by the moodier moments from John Surman on soprano, baritone sax, and bass clarinet. Jon Christensen completes the quartet on drums – and is a player with a strong sense of imagination to match the rich flow of musical energy – on titles that include "Interplay", "Gears", "Sleeping Beauty", "Eagle", "When Face Gets Pale", and "Number Six". ✨✧ Jon Hendricks & CompanyLove ... LP
Muse, 1982. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Jon's going back to the Lambert, Hendricks, & Ross format here – working with a group of singers known as Company (featuring family members Michele and Judith Hendricks), running through vocalese versions of jazz tunes with the same solo line trading style used by LHR in the 50s and 60s. The songs are pretty hip, and the backing is mostly small combo or trio instrumentation. Titles include "Love", "Tell Me The Truth", "The Swinging Groove Merchant", "In A Harlem Airshaft", "Willie's Tune", "Lil Darlin", and "Bright Moments". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Gary NumanI Assassin (green vinyl pressing) ... LP
Atco/Beggars Banquet, 1982. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Gary Numan's looking mighty noirish on the cover – and the record continues that fantastic run of dark-edged electro pop that made the man one of the most important song stylists of his generation! A few tracks here are maybe more tuneful than before – with some surprisingly bright moments – but overall, the Numan vibe is still very much in place – and those trademark vocals are completely wonderful. Titles include "White Boys & Heroes", "This Is My House", "The 1930s Rust", "We Take Mystery To Bed", "War Songs", "Music For Chameleons", and "I Assassin". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ TryadIf Only You Believe In Lovin' ... LP
Del Val, 1971. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really obscure set from the early 70s east coast scene – much more the kind of record you might expect to hear from the rockies at the time, if not farther west – as this trio's got a warm sound that mixes harmony vocals with acoustic guitars – very post-folk, and with a headier style overall – yet not nearly as polished as some of the LA acts who were hitting similar territory at the time! The tunes are all originals, and have this dark current underneath brighter moments – again maybe the best legacy of the post-folk years – and the guitars sparkle with these cool chromes that are different than acoustic backing might have been a few years before. Titles include "Spider Song", "Something Sweet In Dying", "Uptown Suburb Alley", "Columbia Tavern", "I'm Wonderin How I Ever Got That Way", and "Eulogy/Raga". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes booklet of notes too.)

✨✧ Monnette SudlerBrighter Days For You (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Steeplechase (Denmark), 1978. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the few albums cut by guitarist Monnette Sudler – a quick-paced single-note player with a really soulful feel! The album's got a much more righteous sound than you'd expect from the usual Steeplechase outing of the time – and Monnette's working here with a group that includes Khan Jamal on marimba, Newman Baker on drums, Oliver Collins on piano, and William Duke Wilson on percussion. The tunes have a fresh rhythmic approach that pushes past jazz guitar standards of the time – frenetic at times, but never out of control – and Monnette also sings on the one of the album's gentler moments, a nice tune entitled "Moments Of Love". Other tracks include "Family", "Brighter Days For You", "Natural Accurrance", and "Congo". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Dinah WashingtonIn Love ... CD
Roulette, 1962. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Dinah Washington's in love – and clearly bought a new hat to celebrate – but, as with her other albums of this time, the overall sound is quite moody and touched with melancholy – that sublime blend that Washington brought to her music in the later years of her too-short life! Even Don Costa's charts can't brighten things up too much – even though he tries with some strings and occasional backing vocals – as once Dinah comes into the mix, she makes all the tunes completely her own – almost like these solo moments in the spotlight, as short soliloquies to love and loss. Titles include "Fly Me To The Moon", "I Didn't Know About You", "Our Love", "If It's The Last Thing I Do", "My Devotion", and "That's My Desire". CD

Various1978 – The Year The UK Turned Day-Glo (3CD set) ... CD
Cherry Red (UK), 1978. New Copy 3CD ... $24.99
The title's maybe a bit misleading – as most folks think of day-glo as a color associated with some of the most throwaway culture of the 80s – but the brightness of the hue definitely marks the big explosion in styles during the key British year of 1978 – a time when the punk revolution of 1977 opened the door for a big range of modes to follow! It might be said that the post-punk years came immediately after the initial days of punk – and they definitely begin here, as hard and fast modes are mixed with more unusual styles that include mod revival moments, electronic experiments, and even some offbeat pop – expressions of humor, anger, and a shifting political landscape – served up as an amazing document of the creative intensity of the time! As with other Cherry Red boxes, the overall package is great – a huge amount of notes to support the 79 tracks within – a diverse array of music from Blue Steam, The Others, UK Subs, The Jam, Monochrome Set, Wreckless Eric, Spizzoil, Public Image Ltd, 999, The Stranglers, Japan, The Only Ones, Magazine, Alternative TV, Slush, Time Machine, Eater, The Bozos, Tyla Gang, Ed Banger, No Sweat, The VIPs, John Cooper Clarke, Scritti Politti, Penetration, Stiff Little Fingers, Alberto Y Los Trios Paranoias, Teardrops, Coventry Automatics, Menace, Bleach Boys, Jilted John, Zones, Electric Chairs, and many more! Kenny Barron/Dave Holland Trio with Johnathan BlakeWithout Deception (with bonus tracks) ... LP
Dare 2, 2020. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $28.99 29.99
This isn't the first time that pianist Kenny Barron and bassist Dave Holland have played together – but there's definitely something special about the record that really grabs our ears – and it's not just the excellent work on drums by Johnathan Blake! Barron's at his roundest, most soulful sort of tone – really grabbing the notes out of the air in this wonderful way – and Holland really follows suit too, with this very personal, organic approach that's such a change from some of his more experimental work of years back – and which makes him a stunning part of the group, especially at all those many moments when he and Barron dance around each other's sound with this beautifully resonant vibe. Titles include "Until Then", "Porto Alegre", "Without Deception", "Speed Trap", "Secret Places", "Worry Later", and "Pass It On". LP has two bonus tracks – "Can Tomorrow Be Brighter" and "Mabel". Bob JamesH ... CD
Tappan Zee/Warner, 1980. Used ... $6.99
The cover might be a bit gimmicky – with a giant image of a hot dog – but the album's actually one of the more sensitive outings from keyboardist Bob James at the time – a really refreshing blend of modes and styles, served up on Fender Rhodes, Oberheim, and acoustic piano! There's some fairly large arrangements in the mix, but they're never that overdone – and instead often leave plenty of room for the leader to solo out front – a bit like the way that larger charts worked for Hubert Laws during his time at CTI. Bob produced and arranged – and the record's still got some funkier moments in the mix as well. Titles include "Thoroughbred", "The Walkman", "Snowbird Fantasy", "Shepherd's Song", "Brighton By The Sea", and "Reunited". CD
