Badwater BridgeIt's Alright Tonight ... CD
FER (UK), Mid 70s. Used ... $19.99
Sweet and funky soul from the San Francisco scene of the 70s – rare work recorded in the 70s, but not issued until now! The group are very much in the best tradition of those in the Fantasy Records scene of the time – with the sweet jazzy feel of Pleasure, the tightly stepping groove of Side Effect, and the warm modern soul touches that were often heard in the best Oakland acts, produced with a warm sensitivity that's kept the music fresh over all the years! The group's quite large, and has a variety of different instrumental styles – shifting from jazzy to funky to mellow with a classic 70s ensemble feel. Titles include "Always", "Is It Love", "Never Going To Be", "As Long As We're Together", "I Just Want To Tell You", "Don't Take Your Love Away", and "It's Alright Tonight". CD

✨✧ Atlantic BridgeAtlantic Bridge (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Dawn/Esoteric (UK), 1970. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A very cool quartet from the British jazz/rock years – but one who were a lot more jazz-based than some of their contemporaries! These guys are all instrumental, and although a number of their tunes are familiar rock standards from the late 60s, they don't play them like rock tunes at all – and instead used them as freewheeling vehicles for solo exploration –r eally stretching out in a mix of acoustic and electric modes that's mighty nice! Leader Mike McNaught plays both Fender Rhodes and acoustic piano – and the group also features Daryl Runswick on bass, Mike Travis on drums and percussion, and Jim Philip on some especially great flute, tenor, and soprano sax – the last of which really soars up beautifully next to the Rhodes! The set is maybe a bit in the mode of some of John Klemmer's electrified work from the same time, but also more British too – although not without a fair degree of soul on the keyboards. Titles include "Dreams", "Rosecrans Boulevard", "Something", "Dear Prudence", and "Childhood Room". CD

✨✧ Beady BelleAt Welding Bridge ... CD
Jazzland (Norway), 2010. Used ... $2.99
A beautiful album from Beady Belle – the group and wonderful vessel for the seductive, entrancing voice and songs of Beate S. Lech – possibly their best yet! Beady Belle have made deeply engaging blend of modern jazzy soul and beautiful mood music for most of the outs, taking a step back just a bit from the slightly more crossover ready songs of Belvedere album into more intimate, yet just was inviting material on At Welding Bridge. Beate's vocals are as sultry and hypnotic as ever, singing with warmth and genuine emotion in elegant, but not overly precious way – and the instrumentation suits her perfectly. Fender Rhodes, Wurlitzer or other keys, some truly excellent guitar, clarinet, flute, electric bass and percussion frame the vocals on most tracks, and some of the tracks were cut at home, which we believe, given the warmth and intimacy. Titles include "Diamond In The Rough", "Come Home", "The Storm", "Runaway Mind", "Bird's-Eye View", "Turn Back Time", "Press Of Canvas", "Leeway", "Ambush" and "Walk On Air". CD

Paul DesmondBridge Over Troubled Water ... LP
A&M, 1969. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $13.99
Paul Desmond serves up his own versions of some key tunes by Simon & Garfunkel tunes – with results that are simply amazing! The style here takes all the airy brilliance of the original S&G tunes, and turns it towards a more jazz-based mode – one that has some of the slight Brazilian undercurrents in the rhythms that you'll find on Desmond's previous two albums for CTI! The full arrangements are by Don Sebesky, who brings a great sense of balance to the set – and Herbie Hancock plays some great electric piano, in a group that also features Airto on percussion and Gene Bertoncini on guitar. But the real star of the set is Paul Desmond – blowing with that amazing tone of his – and sliding from tune to tune with effortless ease, in a way that really transforms these tunes in their instrumental readings. Titles include "Cecilia", "Mrs. Robinson", "America", "So Long, Frank Lloyd Wright", and "Scarborough Fair" – all done with a sweet jazzy A&M approach! LP, Vinyl record album

Azar LawrenceBridge Into The New Age (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Prestige, 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $16.99 24.99
A wicked set from reedman Azar Lawrence – one of the few albums issued under his own name, and a great example of the waves he was making on the 70s west coast scene! There's a depth here that goes beyond most of the other Fantasy Records sessions of the time – a sound that would be right at home on Strata East, or in some of the more righteous Cobblestone sessions – no surprise, given that the ensemble here is filled with key spiritual jazz players, including Woody Shaw on trumpet, Hadley Caliman on flute, Joe Bonner on piano, Billy Hart on drums, Mtume on congas, and even Jean Carn on a bit of guest vocals! Most tracks are longish, and a perfect setting for Azar's exploratory reed work on soprano sax and tenor – and titles include "Warriors Of Peace", "Forces Of Nature", and "The Beautiful & Omnipresent Love". ✨✧ Sonny RollinsBridge ... LP
RCA, 1962. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A landmark album from Sonny Rollins – one that marked his comeback in the early 60s, after a brief period of retirement, and which also initiated a string of incredible recordings with guitarist Jim Hall. Given Hall's gentleness and spare modernity on the guitar, a fan of Rollins' hard-blowing late 50s sessions might not expect the album to work – but instead, it sets up his playing in a whole new mode that brings out a leaner, more confident, more sophisticated solo mode that shows that his time woodshedding in retirement was well spent. Rollins playing is impeccable, with a maturity not heard in his late 50's work, and the whole album is a beautiful study in measured, thoughtful soloing. Tracks include "John S.", "The Bridge", and "God Bless the Child". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousBridge Into The New Age – Funky Afro-Centric Spiritual Sounds From Jazz's Forgotten Decade ... CD
BGP (UK), Early 70s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Beautifully spiritual jazz from the post-Coltrane generation – a wealth of righteous grooves from the early 70s – brought together in one mighty collection! If you dig the work of Pharoah Sanders, Alice Coltrane, and other giants on Impulse Records, this is a great way to dig even deeper – and hear the way their late 60s legacy inspired other musicians to new heights in their own music – sounds that hit a new level of freedom in jazz, yet which are still filled with enough swing and soul to avoid some of the more avant modes of the free jazz scene! If that description sounds a bit obtuse, then just plug into the collection, and let the music do its thing – as it's got a very powerful vibe throughout – the kind of inspirational, socially conscious work that flourished best during the 70s – and which is finally getting its due all these many years later. The package is new territory for Ace/BGP, but they've done a great job as usual – picking key tracks from the era, and coming up with detailed notes on each of the long tracks. Titles include "Free Angela" by Bayete, "Bridge Into The New Age" by Azar Lawrence, "Tress Cun De O La" by Joe Henderson, "Ebony Queen" by McCoy Tyner, "Peace" by Idris Muhammad, "Mother Of The Future" by Norman Connors, "Brown Warm & Wintry" by Jack DeJohnette, "I've Known Rivers" by Gary Bartz, and "Fire" by Joe Henderson & Alice Coltrane. United Artists, 1963. Near Mint- ... $7.99
Nice tune! The groovy main theme to this one far outlived the film, and showed up all over the place in the 60s – on instrumental theme records, TV spoofs, and other oddball sources. The rest of the score's pretty great, too – and features some compelling orchestrations by Bernstein, who's working at his hardest here to top him work on the Bridge On The River Kwai. Some tracks reprise the theme, and others have more of a dramatic sound. Titles include "On The Road", "Cooler & Mole", "Blythe", "Discovery", "Premature Plans", and "The Chase". Overlooked electronic genius from Serge Blenner – an artist whose name and title might sound a bit French, but who recorded this set in the Hamburg underground at the start of the 80s! The work here is a nice bridge between earlier Sky Records modes and the rising tide of the German new wave – especially those corners of that scene that have gotten a lot of attention in the newly-titled cold wave generation of the time! The tunes are all instrumental, and nice and spare – with maybe elements that hearken back to the analogue electronics of very early Human League and Cabaret Voltaire – tuneful and song-based, but still really moody and dark too. Titles include "Derivatif", "Magazin Frivole", "Envoutement", "A L'Ouest", and "Polyphase". CD

Ed Bogas/Sonny Stitt/Merl SaundersBlack Girl – Original Soundtrack ... CD
Fantasy/BGP (UK), 1972. New Copy ... $8.99 14.99
A killer little soundtrack – and one that's quite different than the usual blacksploitation set, but still pretty funky overall! The film Black Girl was a surprisingly sensitive movie directed by Ossie Davis in the early 70s – not as much about action as it was about the everyday life, and the hopes and dreams of the lead characters – all of which made for some really well-rounded music, of the sort you'd find on some of the other great Fantasy Records soundtracks of the time, especially the classic Cornbread Earl & Me score. Ed Bogas and Ray Shanklin put together the whole thing, and the album's a mix of hip instrumental tracks with some other vocal ones – a really nice range that draws from singers like Betty Everett, Rodger Collins, and JJ Malone – and jazz players like Sonny Stitt and John Hunt (plus organ from Merl Saunders on one cut.) Titles include "BJ's Step", "Black Girl", "Sister", "Earl (Still A Pearl)", "Mothers Day Song", "Power", "Get Me To The Bridge", "Chock-lite Puddin", and "Black Girl Cue". CD

Boogie Down ProductionsCriminal Minded (2LP red vinyl edition with bonus track) ... LP
B-Boy/Traffic, 1986. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $19.99 24.98
One of the best debuts in the history of hip hop – and one of the most important albums the genre ever produced! Criminal Minded is a landmark for a number of reasons. Among the biggest is, of course, that it was recorded with the late great DJ Scott La Rock – and he was soon to fall prey to the very street violence that BDP documented with such raw brilliance by KRS-One. Importance aside, Criminal Minded is simply a great, timeless record that no true fan of gritty classic hip hop should be without. The track list alone is a full chapter in the hip hop book of legends – with tunes like "Poetry", "Elementary", "South Bronx", "Super-Hoe", "Bridge is Over", and the "P is Free" remix. Also includes "Criminal Minded", "Dope Beat", and "9mm Goes Bang". LP, Vinyl record album

Peter Brotzmann/Hamid Drake/Mahmoud GaniaWels Concert ... CD
Okka Disk, 1997. New Copy ... $9.99 13.99
One of the most unusual Peter Brotzmann records we've ever heard – and we mean that in the best way possible! The live improvisation features Brotzmann on tenor, alto, tarogato, and e-flat clarinet – working with Hamid Drake on drums, tablas, and percussion – but alongside Moroccan gnawa musician Mahmoud Gania (or Guinia), whose music is a really different addition to the Brotzmann sound! Hamid Drake provides a great bridge between both players – still working as a free jazz musician, but also bringing a wider range of sounds to his percussion, which blends perfectly with Gania's creations on the warm-toned strings of the guembri, and his occasional vocalizations too. The whole thing is amazing – and the balance of avant reeds, percussion, and regional sounds rivals some of the best of the MPS jazz-meets-world titles from years back. The improvisation is 70 minutes in length – and breathtaking throughout! CD

Sidiku BuariFeelings In Africa/Sidiku Buari & His Jam Busters ... CD
Precious/BBE (UK), Early 80s. New Copy ... $9.99 16.99
A pair of rare records by Sidiku Buari – issued back to back on a single CD! Feelings is a record that was issued on the tiny Precious label – home to only two Buari albums in its tiny catalog – and the set follows strongly on the work that Sidiku recorded in New York during the 70s, records that were initially issued just under his last name! The groove on some tracks is full of early 80s NYC touches – sweet electro keyboards that provide some great middle-ground shocks to the tunes – while beats crackle crispy at the bottom, and Buari sings these slinky soul vocals that are a lot more American than you'd guess from the Ghanaian recording of the album. But other numbers have more of a West Africa vibe – that updating of older modes that was taking place in Nigeria too. Titles include "Music", "Feelings", "Anowar", and "Yayo Papa". Sidiku Buari & His Jam Busters has a groove that definitely lives up to its name – a sweet 80s crackle with lots of tunes that jam in an old school funk style – keyboards, basslines, and rhythms right on the money – in a great Transatlantic bridge between Ghana and New York City! The set begins with the super-funky "Let's Go To Funky Town" – a tune with a break on the intro to rival some of the best funky club work of the time – and the vibe continues strongly through the rest of the set, on titles that include "Sophisticated Jammer", "Power To My People", "Rhythm Of Africa", "Minsumobo", and "Karambani". Brian CharetteBeyond Borderline ... CD
Steeplechase (Denmark), 2019. New Copy ... $16.99 19.99
We always love the work of Hammond organist Brian Charette – and here, the album offers up a chance to hear the keyboardist in all his glory – as there's no other instrumentation at all, which makes for a very unusual solo organ set! Charette handles all the basslines with his feet, so there's still a pretty strong rhythmic pulse on most numbers – but there's definitely a stronger sense of freedom on the keyboard, and the record bristles with all these tones and colors that seem to surpass even some of Brian's previous albums! And if you're worried about the album being a spare, sleepy effort – get past all of that – because Charette keeps things moving nicely on most numbers, and mixes in a few Ellington themes with his own original compositions. Titles include "Silicone Doll", "Yolk", "Wish List", "Chelsea Bridge", "Public Transportation", "Herman Ernst III", "5th Of Rye", and "Good Tipper". CD

Virgin, 1988. New Copy (reissue)... $13.99 24.99
Maybe the crowning moment of genus from the great Neneh Cherry – a record that's a huge evolution from her post punk funk of just a few short years before – and one that really helped her bridge the Atlantic and find a huge following over here at the time! There's a great mix of hip hop inspiration and electro soul styles going on here – but also fused with the chunkier modes that were coming out of the UK soul scene right at the end of the 80s – maybe a new love of the depth of classic soul, which is used to really amplify the spirit of the great lyrics that Neneh delivers throughout. Titles include the megahit "Buffalo Stance" – plus "Manchild", "Kisses On The Wind", "Inner City Mama", "Heart", "The Next Generation", "So Here I Come", "Outre Risque Locomotive", and "Love Ghetto". Clebanoff & His OrchestraLush, Latin & Bossa Nova Too! ... LP
Mercury, 1963. Very Good ... $2.99
Way more than just the usual snoozer you might expect from Clebanoff – thanks to a good dose of bossa in the mix! The style here is still heavy on the strings, as in the usual Clebanoff mode – but the overall arrangements are also considerably lighter, and trade previous romantic shadings for a breezier Brazilian mode – one that's carried off by lots of lightly snapping percussion at the bottom, and some great instrumental touches on guitar, vibes, and just a bit of flute! In a way, the record's almost a bridge between the older American and European instrumental style of the 50s and some of the new orchestrations that were being penned in Brazil in the 60s – a key early example of that influence on these shores, and featuring tunes that include "Land Of My Land", "Poinciana", "O Passaro", "Jazz Samba", "Mima", and Lalo Schifrin's "Whispering Bossa Nova". Linda CliffordLet Me Be Your Woman ... LP
Curtom/RSO, 1979. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... $2.99
Linda Clifford goes a bit over the top with this one – a lavish double-length set, of the sort that ended up bankrupting the Curtom label during the late 70s! Linda's very much in full-disco mode, singing to long clubby arrangements by Gil Askey that have more strings than before – and which really open up onto longer songs that make full use of the double length space! There's a great number here titled "Don't Give It Up", a hip follow-up to the earlier hit "Runaway Love" – which has a similar bad talkin' approach, with Linda doing a bit of a monologue in the middle – a mode that we really love from the singer. Other tracks include "Let Me Be Your Woman", "Hold Me Close", and "Sweet Melodies" – plus the pairing of "One Of Those Songs" and "Bridge Over Troubled Water", which take up all of the 2nd disc in the 2LP set. Curtom, 1977. Near Mint- ... $3.99
Linda's first effort for Curtom, and a record that's got a bit more soul than some of her later more disco-oriented albums. Unfortunately, it's also got a bit more schmaltz – but if you stay away from the sillier cuts, you'll get some tasty mellow soul that's a good bridge between Linda's earlier singles and her later hits. Leroy Hutson produced the sophisticated stepper "Only Fooling Myself", and the rest of the material was handled by Gil Askey, including a good cover of Al Green's "Still In Love With You", Bunny Sigler's "From Now On", and the track "You Can Do It". John ColtraneBlue World (Le Chat Dans Le Sac) ... LP
Impulse, 1964. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A lost treasure from the legendary John Coltrane Quartet – material recorded as the soundtrack for the Canadian film Le Chat Danse Le Sac – which features new recordings of material that Coltrane had done in previous years, but really updated by the fresh version of this group! Although the music was used in the film, which was an art house hit at best, it's never been issued on record before – and in fact, its existence was something of a mystery until not that long ago – quite a surprise, given that the sessions were done at Rudy Van Gelder's studio, and have a quality level that really matches the Impulse Records best by these musicians! The tunes are almost like this amazing bridge between the mid 60s Impulse years and the Coltrane sound at the start of the decade on Atlantic – as the grooves are modal, and most music is more inside than the group was hitting by 1965 – yet still burning with that searching spirit that made them so great. The lineup, of course, features John Coltrane on tenor, McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums – and the whole thing is an instant key addition to the catalog of this tremendous quartet. Titles include two takes on "Naima", three takes on "Village Blues", and the tracks "Like Sonny", "Traneing In", and "Blue World". LP, Vinyl record album

An 80s collection of the hits off of one of the earliest albums on Motown – featuring some killer hard soul numbers! The Contours have a deeper R&B sound than some of their smoother Motown contemporaries – a great bridge between earlier group soul styles of the 50s, and the Motown modes to come – produced here with some wicked piano and guitar lines that ring out strongly in the middle. Vocals are wonderfully raspy – often peaking out into the red as they reach for a lead lyric – and titles include the classic "Do You Love Me" – plus "Shake Sherrie", "Just A Little Misunderstanding", "Whole Lotta Woman", and "It's So Hard Being A Loser". Discos De Planta/Wah Wah (Spain), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
The debut album from Uruguayan singer Diane Denoir – served up with heavy help from Eduardo Mateo of the legendary group El Kinto! Like Mateo's work, the music here is a bit beyond easy comparison – in a rock or pop structure, but with lots of deeper ideas too – a bit like the changes in the post-1968 underground in Paris, where more sophisticated styles of songwriting and arrangement really led the way past simpler pop of the previous decades. Mateo handles some of the arrangements – with Gustavo Beytelmann and Alberto Nunez Palacio too – and the music is full of beautiful elements that resonate strongly with the voice, in complex genre-stepping modes that bridge a space between late 60s A&M and Island Records. Ethnic Heritage EnsembleBe Known Ancient/Future/Music (deluxe 2LP edition) ... LP
Spiritmuse, 2019. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $41.99 44.99
The first record in many years from the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble – done with a lineup that features a variation from the original group, but a sound that's very much in keeping with their mission! The Ensemble were always dedicated to preserving a spiritual jazz tradition at a time when the Chicago and global scenes were decidedly more free jazz-oriented – and from his emergence in the 80s onward, percussionist Kahil El'Zabar has continued to fan the flames with his own music, and with fantastic collaborations like this! The group's a quartet this time around – and has the tremendous Corey Wilkes on trumpet, really giving the sound a pointed edge – next to Kahil's work on a variety of percussion instruments, the baritone sax of Alex Harding, and the cello of Ian Maskin. Maskin's performance on the record is often similar to the way in which the violin of Billy Bang was used in El'Zabar's Ritual Trio – a fluid bridge between the percussion and the horn lines – and the set includes great reworkings of the classics "Little Sunflower" and "Freedom Jazz Dance" – plus originals "Ntozake", "Pharoah", "Blew It", "Black Is Back", and "Wish I Knew". Deram/4 Men With Beards, 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99 21.98
A beautiful early record from singer Bill Fay – recorded in a baroque brilliance that rivals the late 60s work of Scott Walker! Like Walker, Fay's as much a poet as he is a singer – and he's also got the great fortune here to be working with some excellent arrangements – handled by British jazzman Michael Gibbs, and featuring some excellent guitar work from Ray Russell. That said, Bill Fay has a distinctly artful presence with a style that's all his own! He's slightly folksy at times, with echoes of some of more mysterious aspects of late 60s and early 70s psych folk scenesters – but his overall vision is far more elaborate, and carried off here to perfection in a rare kind of "once in a career" record that still holds up beautifully today! The group features excellent tenor from Takeru Muraoka, who plays with kind of a sharp edge that almost echoes more of the alto and soprano work of the generation – mixed with keyboards from Hiromasa Suzuki – who's plenty great on electric piano! Hiroshi Suzuki plays trombone, and the set's got some nice funky drums from Akira Ishikawa – who's always a treat. Overall, the set often has some of the same funky characteristics as some of the best late 60s electric jazz sets on Liberty Records in the US – on titles that include "Capricorn", "Something", "On A Sunny Day", "Some Other Night", and "Peaceful Planet". Doug HammondFolks ... LP
Idibib/Manufactured, 1980. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99
A lasting classic from drummer Doug Hammond – maybe one of his most widely-circulated records, even though the whole set is still relatively obscure! That doesn't stop the music from being great, though – and the whole thing is a great bridge between the New York loft jazz years of the 70s, where Doug was a key performer – and some of the later soulful styles of jazz expression that would flourish in the 80s – a kind of new confidence brought back to the mainstream, with subtle messages really creating power in the music! Much of the record is more inside than you might expect, but still swings with a real edge – very much in the early 80s spirit of Black Saint/Soul Note – and Hammond works with a very cool shifting lineup of musicians, which creates a special flavor for each track on the set. Musicians include Marvin Blackman on alto and tenor, Hubert Eaves on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, Byard Lancaster on alto, Karen Joseph on flute, and Muneer Abdul Fataah on cello – and the record features vocal performances from both Bessie Carter and Angie Bofill – the later of whom is a real surprise on a record like this. The record's a great bridge between the 60s and 70s – showing some of the hipper modes of the east coast folk scene as it moved way past traditional styles in the latter half of the 60s – and prefacing some of the use of acoustic instrumentation that would later come in soul music – in the work of artists like Bill Withers. Tracks are mostly originals, and feature a wonderful blend of acoustic and electric guitar, piano, and plenty of rootsy percussion that really sends the whole thing home – and titles include "Here Comes The Sun", "Some Will Wait", "Patient Lady", "Missing Train", and "End Of The Seasons". Heaven 17How Men Are ... LP
Arista/Virgin, 1984. Near Mint- ... $3.99
The last moment of greatness from Heaven 17 – and a set that continues the trend towards more soulful expression the group began with their previous record! This time around, the production is warmly touched with many soul-based elements that nicely offset the colder electro pop of their roots – aspects of which include the Phenix Horns, borrowed from Earth Wind & Fire, as well as the Afrodiziak backing vocal group, which features a young Caron Wheeler in her days before Soul II Soul! It may be a stretch, but the record does have a key place in the evolution of UK soul in the 1980s – certainly its most poppy aspect to be sure, but one that has an undeniable charm, and which really managed to bridge a number of different cultures with its approach. A fantastic album from The Intruders – their last full record as a group, and a set that really shows all the growth they'd experienced as a harmony group in just a few short years! We love their early singles, and even their previous album for Philly International – but there's also something really special going on here – a way of hitting just the right mellow-stepping vibe to bridge the heartbreak of early ballads and some of the more sophisticated, more adult Philly modes of the 70s! Bobby Martin arranged most of the record – John Davis and Vince Montana helped out elsewhere – and the whole thing's got the blend of smoothness with fragile vocals that you'd find in the best Blue Magic material of the mid 70s – but all with that very unique vocal style that always made The Intruders so different! Titles include a funky cover of "Be Thankful for What You Got", Marvin Gaye's "Jan", and the tracks "Be On Time", "What's Easy For Two Is So Hard For One", "A Nice Girl Like You", "Energy Of Love", and "Everyone's A Star". Iverson's a player with a great sense of history, yet one who also really wants to move his references forward too – and his freely improvisational style of these tunes is just wonderful – beginning with a respect for his elders, yet really going past any obvious direction in its execution! Both Street and Heath are key elements too – but Iverson's playing is what really holds our attention here – and we'll admit that our entry to the record was also guided by his extremely thoughtful notes as well. Groovy late 60s pop from Samantha Jones – a British singer who's working here with some great arrangements and productions from UK maestro Mark Wirtz! The sound here is a great bridge between the sweeter styles of UK Brit pop in the 60s and some of the hipper ones to come in the 70s – definitely done with an inspiration from American soul, which Samantha picks up strongly in some of her best vocals here. The backings often have a nice bit of bounce in them – similar to some of Dusty Springfield's work of the time – and although a few elements are slightly heady, the overall feel here is relatively straightforward and hook-heavy! Side two is perhaps the most striking – a side-long, 21 minute take on the title tune "C Cool" – a tune that builds slowly, has more acoustic guitar than electric, and a mix of spoken and sung vocals that's as trippy as it is compelling! Insanely beautiful work from the great Joe McPhee – an album that was recorded and intended to be issued during his groundbreaking stretch with Hat Art Records – but which never saw the light of day at the time! Why that happened, we're not entirely sure – because the album is tremendous right from the very first note – as McPhee blows alto, tenor, and pocket cornet alongside the work of Andre Jaume on alto, tenor, and bass clarinet – in a set of horn-only performances that are breathtaking from start to finish! Jaume's a great player too – and his work of the time, especially on Hat Art, is a masterpiece of subtlety and soul – and he balances McPhee perfectly here, often with some deeper currents that create a beautifully organic energy between the two. Jaume's got this way of handling his reed that's amazing – and, of course, Joe's phrasing is as incredible as always. MelodiansRivers Of Babylon (180 gram orange vinyl pressing) ... LP
Beverley's/Music On Vinyl (UK), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99 26.99
A seminal set from The Melodians – and a record titled after their classic single, which really helped lay the groundwork for the rise of righteous reggae in the 70s! The work here is a key bridge between the soul-inspired work of previous Jamaican trios, and some of the important roots acts to come – all produced by Leslie Kong with this gently-tripping groove that really fits the laidback harmonies of the duo! The whole set's great – and in addition to "Rivers Of Babylon", other tracks include "Sweet Sensation", "It Took A Miracle", "Oh Say Darling Say", "I Don't Care", "Lost My Love", "A Day Seems So Long", and "Though I'm Through With You". Worthy, 1966. New Copy (reissue)... $12.99
Pure insanity from the mighty Mulatu – one of his few American albums from the 60s! The record's an incredible blend of New York Latin and some of the more Afro-styled grooves Mulatu explored more freely on his Ethiopian recordings – served up in a jazzy style that has plenty of vibes in the mix, and lots of percussion at the bottom! The record is a treasure throughout – other-worldly, yet still very hip and swinging – a mysterious bridge between Latin America and Africa, suspended on waves of wonderful sound! Titles include "Shagu", "Mascaram Setaba", "Almaz", "Mulatu's Hideaway", "Askum", "Playboy Cha Cha", and "One For Buzayhew". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Kinloch NelsonPartly On Time – Recordings 1968 to 1970 ... LP
Tompkins Square, Late 60s. Near Mint- ... $13.99
Sublime solo guitar work from Kinloch Nelson – a figure who's spent decades working as a musician and teacher in upstate New York, but who made these recordings when he was just a pretty young guy! The music here fits in perfectly with some of the archival releases on Tompkins Square – very much in the more underground acoustic side of the 60s – post-folk, and dedicated to unusual tunings – and with a very personal, lyrical quality that almost makes Nelson something of a bridge between the older Takoma Records scene, and the acoustic underground of the 70s. Includes "Pearl St", "Lazin' In My Sleep", "Partly On Time", "Funky Sedan", "Coming Down From The Ceiling", "The Eyes Of The Fair Molly", "Solitudes", "Kittens", "Winnipesaukee Night" and more. Hubbub (UK), 1976/1995. Used ... $14.99
Kellee Patterson's amazing first album for the Shadybrook label – a total killer all the way through, and much harder and heavier than any of her later sides for the label! The record's got a nice jazzy vibe that's a good bridge between her earlier work on Black Jazz, and her later, straighter soul material – a dose of funk in all the right places, and a touch of spiritual leanings too – really put together with a wonderful feel that sets the album apart from much other work of the time! Includes a sublime breakbeat version of "I'm Gonna Love You Just a Little More Baby" – with killer drums, and an excellent monologue at the beginning – plus a great cover of Grover Washington's "Mister Magic", with some interesting vocals. Other titles include "Time To Space", "What You Don't Know", and "I Love Music". Gene Russell handled production and arrangements, too! CD

Lee Perry with Seskain Molenga & Kalo KawongoloRoots From The Congo ... LP
Roots Vibration/Planet Ilunga (UK), 1979. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
One of the most unusual albums to ever come from the legendary Black Ark studios of Lee Scratch Perry – a set by a duo of Congolese singers, Seke Molenga and Kalo Kawongolo – who are also not to be confused with The Congos, another group that Perry was producing at the time! The album definitely has some reggae elements, but also echoes with a sound that's much more African than most of Lee's other music of the time – a great mixing of the vocals, guitars, and percussion of Molenga and Kawongolo with some of the trippier, dubbier styles of Scratch's production – at a level that seems bent on building a musical bridge across the Atlantic! Titles include "Moto Ya Motema", "Bad Food", "African Roots", "Mengieb", and "Guipimbu Gienu". LP, Vinyl record album

Iggy PopZombie Birdhouse (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Animal/Caroline, 1982. New Copy (reissue)... $16.99 25.99
A pivotal album from Iggy Pop – a set that's done with lots of fuzzy guitar production from Chris Stein, in a way that shows plenty of his influence on the music – but with a feel that's plenty Iggy overall! The record represents a strong bridge between the Bowie-produced years and that crossover sound that would make Pop huge at the end of the 80s – almost like he's trying out catchier hooks and bolder rhythmic patterns, yet without going for any commercial modes at all. There's a roughness to the whole proceedings that's really compelling – especially when Iggy tries to sing more than shout or speak – and titles include "Angry Hills", "Run Like A Villain", "Eat Or Be Eaten", "Bulldozer", "Platonic", "The Horse Song", "Street Crazies", and "Watching The News". A strong little record that speaks its message right in its title – and which follows up with some inventive production touches that are sure to set Preservation apart from the pack! Much of the aesthetic here seeks to bridge a space between New York and China – using the melting pot of Queens as a strong springboard – sometimes with found snippets that address global issues, sometimes with slight instrumental flourishes that echo trans-Pacific culture – but all topped with rhymes from a variety of guests that really center the project in New York – contributions from Roc Marciano, YoungQueenz, Mach Hommy, Ka, Your Old Droog, Quelle Chris, AG, Grande Marshall, and others. ResidentsMole Box – The Complete Mole Trilogy Preserved (Mark Of The Mole/Tunes Of Two Cities/Big Bubble/Mole Show/bonus tracks) (6CD set) ... CD
Ralph (UK), Early 80s. New Copy 6CD ... $24.99
The complete Mole Trilogy from The Residents – a complicated longform work that dominated most of their recordings in the mid 80s, and which created a fair bit of bonus material and sidebar songs – all of which are compiled in this massive 6CD set! The Mole storyline is a very loose narrative used to give a bit more structure than usual to the group's offbeat mix of electronics, processed vocals, and all the strange instrumentation that made them a key bridge between academic experiments of the postwar years, and more progressive work to come in the postpunk scenes around the globe. The group always hid their identity, and were perhaps even more hidden than usual behind this long storyline – while still spinning out the kinds of sounds that always held their audiences rapt, and kept their listeners guessing. CD features the full albums Mark Of The Mole, Tunes Of Two Cities, The Big Bubble, and The Mole Show – plus bonus tracks for each album, a full bonus CD of another Mole show in Washington in 1983, and a bonus CD of Miscellaneous Mole Material – all with a big booklet of notes. Pressure Sounds (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2LP ... $22.99 24.98
Rare work from Jimmy Riley – a 70s singer who never fully got his due, but who rubbed shoulders with all the best on the Kingston scene, and made some mighty great music in the process! Jimmy's the father of Taurus Riley – the contemporary vocalist – but may well be a more expressive talent in his own right, as you'll hear in these powerful tracks from the late 70s, which include a number of great protest and political numbers, set to slow-stepping, head-nodding rhythms. A few cuts here are offered up in both original takes and versions, and most are pretty darn obscure, but pulled together with the always-great Pressure Sounds level of care and class. Titles include "Gunman Of JA", "From The Ghetto", "Westcoast", "Five Thanks & Praise", "Tell The Youths The Truth", "Majority Rule", "Bridge The Gap", "Poor Immigrant", and "Everyone Needs Money". ✨✧ RogerBridging The Gap ... CD
Reprise, 1991. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Roger Troutman's definitely trying to bridge a few different gaps in soul music with this later solo effort – some of his earlier funk, his mid-period electro, and even a bit more mature ballad work – which rounds out the album nicely! Given that Roger initiated so many modes that others had picked on by this point, the shift towards some more sensitive material turns out to be a great shift – one that keeps Troutman from being an outdated funk act, and which instead helps turn that unmistakable ear for a groove towards some mellower stepping tracks that are maybe the best on the record. Titles include "Victim Of Love", "Hurry Up", "Love Incorporated", "Break Through", "Curiosity", "Take Me Back", and "Everybody Get Up". CD

Don SebeskyDon Sebesky & The Jazz Rock Syndrome ... LP
Verve, 1967. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $14.99
An excellent little album – with a very funky sound! Don't be put off by the "jazz rock" in the title – because there's very little rock in here – just some hard funky drums and fuzzy use of guitar – served up by Don Sebesky in his approximation of the sound of the younger generation! The album's very much in the best groovy, groove-heavy Verve instrumental mode of the 60s – a soaring, swinging style that did plenty back in the day to bridge the generation gap. Guitar solos are by Joe Beck and Larry Coryell – and other players include Hubert Laws on flute, Richard Spencer on alto, and Don Sebesky on organ, clavinet, and electric harpsichord! Titles include "Shake A Lady", "Banana Flower", "The Word", "Big Mama Cass", "Somebody Groovy", "I Dig Rock & Roll Music", "You've Got Your Troubles", and "Meet A Cheeta". LP, Vinyl record album

Shango Dance BandShango Dance Band ... CD
Comb & Razor, Early 70s. New Copy ... $6.99 15.98
Insanely wonderful work from Shango Dance Band – a group headed by onetime Fela Kuti bandmate Ojo Okeji – whose bass work here is worth the price of admission alone! Okeji was a key part of Fela's Koola Lobitos, until leaving the group in 1968 – and taking some of the best players with him – to form the amazing Shango Dance Band, which is this incredible bridge between older Afro jazz modes and the new funk styles to explode in the 70s! At some level, the groove's a bit like that which Fela was percolating at the start of the 70s – but there's also some jazzier currents on the horn solos, especially the trumpet – and Okeji's bass is very far up in the mix – dipping, turning, and crafting these amazing grooves throughout – with a snakey vibe that's completely sublime – as is the entire record. And sure, there have been plenty of Afro Funk reissued on the market in the past decade or so – but few as essential as this one – or as enjoyable! Titles include "Position Pass Power", "Women Are Great", "Son Of Thunder", "Alupandu Gbe", and "I Need Your Love". CD

One of Archie Shepp's most soulful records of the 70s – and proof that the Horo label could get amazing work out of any player! The record features Shepp in a spare trio setting – with Cameron Brown on bass and Clifford Jarvis on drums – and each of the four sides features an extended reading of more traditional jazz material, yet still done in a manner that's quite free, and extremely soulful. Side one features Shepp's "Hooray For Mal", side three features the excellent "Things Have Got to Change" by the great Cal Massey, and the remaining sides feature two great Ellington interpretations, "I Didn't Know About You" and "Sophisticated Lady". Great stuff all around – and a perfect bridge between two different modes of the music of Archie Shepp! LP, Vinyl record album

Aketa's Disk/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1983. New Copy ... $14.99
Fantastic solo piano from Takeshi Shibuya – a player who seems to bridge the older world of jazz piano lyricism with some of the freer flows of the Keith Jarrett generation – all while coming up with a style that's very much his own! The album's a mix of originals and standards, and Takeshi always seems to have this special flow on the keys – a mode that partly echoes the Japanese trio groups of the 70s, but which is often a bit looser and more introspective – in part, of course, because there's no bass or drums on the record at all. His ear for an unusual phrase is really great – and titles include "Runagirio", "Estrellita", "Old Folks", "Misterioso", "Gipsy Love Song", and "Tarirari Blues". CD

Vanguard/Wounded Bird, 1966. New Copy ... $6.99 14.99
The debut album from a group who became a seminal bridge on the Chicago scene in the 60s – a blue-eyed blues quartet who got their start on the south side, then helped bring the music up north! The group have an edge here that's sharper than you might expect – maybe in part because the set was issued on the Vanguard label, who really hang on to some sort of folk blues roots, and don't try to polish these guys up too much. But they're also young, gritty, and full of fire – and Corky Siegel sounds better than we remember on vocals and harmonica, next to some mighty great guitar work from the young Jim Schwall! Titles include "Down In The Bottom", "When I Get The Time", "Boot Hill", "Mama/Papa", "Going To New York", "Little Babe", and "I'll Be The Man". CD features two bonus tracks – "Howlin For My Darlin" and "I've Had All I Can Take" – early demos from Corky and Jim, as the Two Man Blues Band. CD
