Dezron Douglas & Brandee YoungerForce Majeure ... CD
International Anthem, 2020. New Copy ... $12.99 13.99
Dezron Douglas and Brandee Younger are two of our favorite jazz musicians to emerge in the past decade – and this set of duets may well be some of the greatest work that either artist has done on record to date! The setting is unique – material pulled from live stream broadcasts that bassist Douglas and harpist Younger did from their Harlem apartment during the lockdown in Spring of 2020 – and if that makes you think that the material's going to be low-fi or cheap, it's not – as there's a sense of majesty here that's really surprising, given that the album features just two musicians! Dezron's bass has never sounded better – and blended with the harp of Younger, the sound is amazing – as Brandee evokes both Alice Coltrane and Dorothy Ashby on the instrument – but also brings in a spirit that's very much her own. The set features remakes of tracks from both Coltranes, and Pharoah Sanders – plus lots of other surprises and original material too – on titles that include "Gospel Trane", "Force Majeure", "This Woman's Work", "Nothing Stupid", "Sing", "The Creator Has A Master Plan", "Never Can Say Goodbye", "We'll Be Right Back", "You Make Me Feel Brand New", and "Equinox". Brandee YoungerSomewhere Different ... CD
Impulse, 2021. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
The Impulse Records debut of Brandee Younger – an artist who's more than worthy of appearance on that legendary label! As with another famous Impulse musician, Alice Coltrane, Younger's main instrument here is the harp – but she uses the instrument in ways that are very much her own – very contemporary, and mixed with a blend of soulful and spiritual styles that really push the older legacy of the Impulse label forward in all the right ways! Most tracks are instrumental, and shift between acoustic and electric instrumentation in the mix – never on the harp, but on the bass – and on one track, Tarriona Tank Ball joins the group on vocals. Dezron Douglas produced the record, really bringing his strong ear for rhythms into play – and titles include "Tickled Pink", "Olivia Benson", "Somewhere Different", "Spirit U Will", "Reclamation", and "Beautiful Is Black". BadbadnotgoodTalk Memory ... CD
Innovative Leisure, 2021. New Copy ... $14.99 15.99
A really different sort of record from Badbadnotgood – and we mean that in the best way possible, as the group are really maturing and opening up their sound! The core blend of funk and jazz elements is still at play on the record – but there's also a more expansive vibe too, one that uses larger arrangements to really color in the sound and create all this sense of sonic wonder – a vibe that really comes through on one track that features guest work from cosmic musician Laraaji, and five more that feature the legendary Brazilian artist Arthur Verocai! In a way, the spacious quality of Verocai's own music might be a good way to describe the approach here – although the group certainly leave their own mark on the sound too. Titles include "City Of Mirrors", "Unfolding", "Love Proceeding", "Timid Intimidating", "Beside April", and "Talk Meaning" – the last of which features guest work from Terrace Martin and Brandee Younger too. Durand Jones & The IndicationsPrivate Space ... CD
Colemine/Dead Oceans, 2021. New Copy ... $12.99 14.98
Fantastic work from Durand Jones & The Indications – a group who've really come a long way in the past few years – in ways that push Durand's vocals to places we wouldn't have guessed on previous records! This set's way more than just a funk band with a soul singer upfront – as the whole thing's a fully-formed soul record through and through – with these larger arrangements that really add a lot, and open up all these righteous 70s currents mixed with a few contemporary flourishes that really give the album a very distinct sound! The songwriting is even better than before, too – and the group seems to have found a voice for themselves that's unlike any of their contemporaries. The record features guest work from Brandee Younger on harp and Joel Ross on vibes – and titles include "Love Will Work It Out", "Witchoo", "Reach Out", "Sexy Thang", "More Than Ever", "Private Space", "Sea Of Love", "I Can See", and "Ride Or Die". Michael OlatujaLagos Pepper Soup ... CD
Whirlwind, 2020. Used ... $9.99
The most ambitious set to date from bassist Michael Olatuja – a record that showcases him as way more than just a jazz musician, as he mixes together many different strands of music into his own sonic version of Lagos Pepper Soup! Olatuja plays a variety of basses, and is definitely a strong part of the set – but he's also opened the door for a wide array of other talents, including singers in a few spots – all to create music that reflects his global heritage and lifelong journey from London to Lagos to New York! The record mixes deft instrumental contributions – which includes Aaron Parks on piano and Etienne Stawijk on keyboards – with larger strings at times, and a rich array of musical elements that really keep things interesting. Guests include Joe Lovano on tenor, Regina Carter on violin, Lionel Loueke on guitar, Brandee Younger on harp, an both Angelique Kidjo and Dianne Reeves on vocals. Titles include "Bola's Song", "Lagos Pepper Soup", "Hero's Journey", "Soki", "Brighter Day", "Shadows Fade", and "Home True". CD

Kassa OverallI Think I'm Good ... CD
Brownswood (UK), 2020. Used ... $6.99
We really loved Kassa Overall's debut, but we're completely blown away with this full length set – as the record's got a visionary sound that's completely his own – a really new mix of jazz, soul, and funk that's bound to make Kassa one of the most important talents in years to come! Overall sings and plays drums – the latter of which are used in very open, creative ways – amidst a keyboard-heavy set of instrumentation that also includes work from Sullivan Fortner on piano, Brandee Younger on harp, Aaron Parks on keyboards, Vijay Iyer on Fender Rhodes, Joel Ross on vibes, and Theo Croker on flugelhorn! Kassa finds a way to bring in these guests, and others – but always at a level that never changes the core style too much – so that it's always clear we're always in very personal territory, with a style that's poetic one minute, funky the next, and always extremely beautiful. Titles include "Please Don't Kill Me", "Visible Walls", "Was She Happy", "Sleeping On The Train", "Landline", "Darkness In Mind", and "The Best Of Life". CD

Joel RossWho Are You ... LP
Blue Note, 2020. New Copy ... $24.99 29.99
Beautiful work from vibist Joel Ross – a player who's just starting to blossom as a leader, and who's clearly on the right path! The sound is wonderfully rich – not just vibes from Ross, but especially nice work from bassist Kanoa Mendenhall, who's a really key part of the sound here – blended with warm piano lines from Jeremy Corren, subtle drums from Jeremy Dutton, and alto from Immanuel Wilkins – all players who seem instantly linked together in their sense of sound, and who work with Joel to make the kind of record that should really get him the attention he deserves! There's this slow-burning majesty to the record – both in composition and performance – a sound that's sophisticated, but very organic – and a very different setting for the use of vibes in jazz. Brandee Younger plays harp on a few tracks too – another plus in our book – and titles include "Vartha", "Marsheland", "Waiting On A Solemn Reminiscence", "Home", "More", "Calling", "King's Loop", and "Dream". Web Web have really deepened up their sound here – much more spiritual than we ever would have expected before – but maybe no surprise, given that the record features guest work from giants like Charles Tolliver, Mulatu, and Brandee Younger! The core group features lots of great flute and tenor work from Tony Lakatos – who you may know from other albums under his own name – plus Rhodes, organ, Wurlitzer, and other keyboards from group leaders Max Herre and Roberto Di Gioa – working alongside bass from Christian Von Kaphengest and drums and percussion from Peter Gall. Most tracks have a modal and exotic vibe that's right in the best tradition of Yusef Lateef – and although Lateef does make an appearances on the record, it's just a spoken passage on one track. Titles include "Akinuba/The Heart", "Satori Ways", "Intersections", "Turquoise", "Liberation March", "Whirlin", "Thesa Mbawula", and "Meskel Flowers". CD

✨✧ Makaya McCravenUniversal Beings ... LP
International Anthem, 2018. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Maybe the crowning achievement of drummer Makaya McCraven so far – a double-length set that stands as a huge testimony to all the many waves he's been making in jazz for the past few years! The album features four slices of live performance – recorded in New York, Chicago, LA, and London – and as with every one of his different projects, Makaya seems to bring a different voice to each live track here – recording with Brandee Younger on harp and Joel Ross on vibes in New York, Shabaka Hutchings on tenor in Chicago; Nubya Garcia on tenor and Ashley Henry on Rhodes in London; and Josh Johnson on alto, Jeff Parker on guitar, Carlos Nino on percussion, and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson on violin in LA! The rhythms are as amazing as the contributions from the different soloists – and the sound of the record is maybe something we'd call post-spiritual – moving past that Coltrane-inspired mode that's been revived so well in the 21st Century, while still holding onto its best sense of energy. The whole thing is fantastic – and titles include "The Count Off", "Brighter Days Beginning", "Universal Beings", "Mantra", "Young Genius", "Holy Lands", "Wise Man Wiser Woman", "Prosperity's Fear", "Atlantic Black", "Flipped Out", "Voila", and "Suite Hans". ✨✧ Makaya McCravenUniversal Beings E & F Sides ... LP
International Anthem, 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really great idea for a record – and one that echoes the same "E & F" mode that Makaya McCraven brought to his previous album! The approach here is as unique as the drummer himself – in that McCraven went back to the sessions for the core album, and pulled out material that's recast into a completely different record altogether – not a remix project, or a batch of alternate takes – but new music from the ground up, as Makaya continues his groundbreaking style of using live jazz performance as the basis for a record that's eventually cut-up and reassembled! Performances were recorded in Chicago, Cali, Brooklyn, and London – with players who include Brandee Younger on harp, Joel Ross on vibes, Dezron Douglas on bass, Ashley Henry on Fender Rhodes, Nubya Garcia on tenor, Jeff Parker on guitar, Miguel Atwood Ferguson on violin, Carlos Nino on percussion, Junius Paul on bass, Tomeka Reid on cello, and Shabaka Hutchings on tenor – an amazing lineup that gets plenty of space to shine in the hands of Makaya. Titles include "Everybody Coo", "Mak Attack", "The Hunt", "Beat Science", "Kings & Queens", "Traveling Space", "Butterss Fly", "Universal Beings Part 2", "Her Name", "Half Steppin", and "The Way Home". ✨✧ Lakecia BenjaminPursuance – The Coltranes ... CD
Ropeadope, 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The music of the Coltranes – both John and Alice – taken into wonderful directions by saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin – a younger player who clearly feels the influence of the Great One in a very deep way, but isn't about to just offer up a straight copy of the family spiritual legacy! Part of the difference lies in the fact that Lakecia plays alto, not tenor or soprano – but there's also this energy here that's really fresh, too – maybe a more compact take on the ideas of the songs, but also strongly collaborative too – as the record features contributions from so many other great artists – Gary Bartz and Steve Wilson on alto, Meshell Ndegeocello and Reggie Workman on bass, Marc Cary on piano, Brandee Younger on harp, and Georgia Anne Muldrow and Dee Dee Bridgewater on vocals. The lineup changes nicely throughout the album, and there's many flavors of reflection in this Coltrane rainbow – on titles that include "Turiya & Ramakrishna", "Om Shanti", "Alabama", "Acknowledgement", "Liberia", "Central Park West", "Sprial", "Syeeda's Song Flute", and "Pursuance".
