✨✧ Steve Swell/Robert Boston/Michael VatcherBrain In A Dish ... CD
No Business (Lithuania), 2019. New Copy ... $14.99
We sometimes forget the power of Steve Swell on trombone – then along comes a record like this, which helps us remember all over again! Swell bursts out of the gate with this fantastically dirty tone – a way of rasping up his notes while still stating them with great focus – driven on by the powerful drums of Michael Vatcher, and peppered with shots on both piano and organ from Robert Boston – a trio that can come on with great power at some points, then hold open a more spacious gate to sound at others. Swell's tone is bracing and original throughout – and titles include "Psychopath In A Church Pew", "New Use For Old Neurons", "Brain In A Dish", "Just Another Alogism", "Tastier Than Oranges", and "Fried Or Roasted". BBE (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 3LP & 7 inch Gatefold ... $24.99 28.99
A huge discovery in music – most of which we've never heard before, and which shows that the Boston scene was getting pretty busy during the classic club years – even if the city's grooves never reached the same fame as cuts from New York, Philly, and other points south! The package is definitely a labor of love – put together by DJ/collector Serge Gamesbourg – who's clearly done a hell of a lot of work to unearth these rare singles and small label releases – records that maybe didn't even make it down to New York City back in the day, and which were probably crowed out of the record racks, even if they did! Most of these cuts are nicely rough around the edges – sometimes in more of a fast funk mode, other times with all the cool offbeat touches of indie label club cuts – and almost all numbers get a special Serge Gamesbourg edit, in order to bring out the grooviest elements of the tracks. Titles include "No More Games" by Larry Wedgeworth & Clique, "All In Good Time" by Wildlife featuring Vi Taylor, "Play It By Ear" by Cojo, "Get Up & Dance Don't Want No Party Poo Pershere" by Carrie Mims & Herbe Lee River Junction, "Feel The Music" by Dreamflight, "I Want Your Body" by Royale, "Free For All" by Second Wind, "I'm Gonna Get You (Meeow)" by Carrie Mims & Herb Lee River Junction, "You Make Me Happy" by Christopher Michael Band, "Keep It Comin On" by Gypsy, and "Fire Funk" by Hypnotics. ✨✧ VariousTake Us Home – Boston Roots Reggae 1979 to 1988 ... CD
Cultures Of Soul, Late 70s/1980s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A surprisingly strong collection of reggae recorded in Boston during the 80s – or maybe not that surprising at all, given that the city had a growing Caribbean population, and a very strong college audience for the music! Still, the package is a huge discovery – strong quality work from a city that most folks would associate with just about any other style of music – with a key emphasis on the sorts of message-oriented cuts that helped reggae find a huge global audience in the generation of Bob Marley – carried forth here by a host of local acts working in very faithful, well-produced modes. The set's got a great booklet of notes – more than enough detail and explanation for this unique musical moment – and titles include "Take Us Home" and "Our Father's Land" by Danny Tucker, "Country Girl" and "Two Minute Warning"by Lambsbread, "Errol's Love" and "Oh What A Saturday Night" by Errol Strength, "Without Your Love" and "Nations Unite" by Healing Of The Nations, "Burning Fire" and "Condemnation Lion" by Zion Initiation, and "Love Is A Pleasure" by I Tones. ArawakAccadde A ... LP
Golden Pavilion (Portugal), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... About October 15, 2019 (delayed)
Amazing grooves from Arawak – an obscure Italian combo from the 70s sound library days – and one who work here in a wickedly sharp take on funky jazz! The group's got some great flute in the lead – sometimes biting hard over the breaks, ala Jeremy Steig – sometimes floating a bit more dreamily, with a vibe that's soulful and mellow! Other instrumentation includes a bit of keyboards, guitar, bass, and some plenty nice drums – which snap and break with a real sharpness on some of the album's best tracks. The tunes are pretty offbeat – straight, but not your usual bag of funk – and a bit more like some of the excellent sound library work on the Cenacolo or Rotary labels at the same time. Titles include "Accadde A Harlem", "Accadde A Las Vegas", "Accadde In Biafra", "Accadde A Yellow Park", "Accadde A Boston", "Accadde A Bahia", and "Accadde A Bali". LP, Vinyl record album

James BrownSay It Live & Loud – Live In Dallas 1968 (with bonus tracks) ... LP
Polydor, 1968. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $26.99 34.99
An amazing James Brown live set from the crucial year of 1968 – the show that marked the debut of "Say It Loud I'm Black & I'm Proud" – a cut that would become an anthem for much of America in the years to come! The feel here is somewhat similar to Brown's famous Boston show of the same year – a mix of blistering uptempo funk tracks, played by the band at a clip that's even faster than their studio sides, mixed with a few more stripped-down, personal cuts that feature James getting a bit more intimate with the audience. The production quality of the set is wonderful – and it leaves in all the hip spoken bits between tracks, really preserving the liveness of the concert, and packaging the whole thing with some great notes and photos too! Titles include "I Guess I'll Have To Cry Cry Cry", "Say It Loud", "If I Ruled The World", "There Was A Time", "Maybe The Last Time", "I Got The Feeling", "Cold Sweat", "Please Please Please", "Tighten Up", "Licking Stick", and lots more! LP version features two unreleased bonus tracks – "That's Life" and "The Popcorn". LP, Vinyl record album

Gary BurtonGood Vibes ... CD
Atlantic/Koch, 1970. Used ... $9.99
Gary hits a sweet electric funky sound here – working in a group that includes Eric Gale on guitar, Richard Tee on piano and organ, Chuck Rainey on bass, and Bernard Purdie on drums. The album's got a bit of trippiness to it – kind of in the style of some of Herbie Mann's funky production work for the Vortex label – and a few cuts have producer Joel Dorn working with Arif Mardin on the cuts, giving them a more expansive sound that pushes Burton's playing nicely. The vibes have a dark chromatic quality to them that sounds great next to the sweeter playing of the funky player – and the record's filled with nice numbers like "Vibrafinger", "Las Vegas Tango", "Boston Marathon", and "Leroy The Magician". Gary Burton hits a sweet electric funky sound here – a great groove that really makes the album stand out from most of his other work! Cat Mother & The All Night News BoysStreet Giveth & The Street Taketh Away ... LP
Polydor, 1968. Very Good ... $4.99
A legendary batch of funky rock tracks – noteworthy not only for production by Jimi Hendrix, but also for the group's insanely great groove! There's a bluesy undercurrent here, but sharpened much more strongly for the funk generation – which takes Cat Mother way past contemporaries like Canned Heat or The Steve Miller Band – yet also still has the gritty power of both of those groups. Jimi's production is surprisingly great – fused tightly at times, in ways that almost preface some modes that bigger acts would take rootsy sounds in the 70s, but much more revolutionary here. The set's worth it alone for the trippy instrumental jam "Track In A", and other tracks include "Can You Dance To It", "Marie", "How I Spent My Summer", "Bramble Bush", "Boston Burglar", and "Favors". Classic Capitol jazz session, and one that pairs Boston baritone player Serge Chaloff with an LA rhythm section that has Sonny Clark on piano, Leroy Vinnegar on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums. The album's a perfect example of Chaloff's legendary (and short-lived) talents on the baritone – and listening to it, you'll hear how Chaloff was one of the few players ever to get such a rich tone and fluid style out of the instrument. John CorbettPick Up The Pieces – Excursions In 70s Music (hardcover) ... Book
University Of Chicago, 2019. New Copy ... $22.99 30.00
Writer John Corbett has given us words on a huge variety of musical styles over the years – a fair bit of them left field and avant – but this time around, he's tackling the full range of 70s rock, pop, and soul music – in a huge book that's unlike anything he's ever written before! First off, the large volume is very personal – part listening autobiography, part paean to the musical giants who shaped the decade, and part hindsight record review of all the amazing sounds that were created during the 70s! The book follows the decade with year-by-year chapters – yet it's hardly a history at all – as Corbett picks key songs and albums as touchstones for each year – partly because of their impact, but more because of the power they had for him as a listener. The albums run the gamut – from Nursery Cryme by Genesis, to Les Stances A Sophie by The Art Ensemble Of Chicago, to Pink Moon by Nick Drake – and songs include "Sex Machine" by James Brown, "School's Out" by Alice Cooper, and "Long Time" by Boston. 496 pages, hardcover. Stan GetzMore West Coast Jazz With Stan Getz ... LP
Verve, 1953. Very Good- ... $24.99
The title's a bit misleading, but the record's a great one! Oddly, the album's not a follow up to the West Coast Jazz album by Stan Getz – firstly, because it wasn't actually done on the west coast, and secondly, because this one was actually recorded two years before! But that doesn't stop the set from being great – and we can certainly forgive Verve's free use of west coast in the title as more of a stylistic definition than anything else. But even with that name in place, there's almost more of a Boston modern feel going on – one that's open, fluid, and which features the tenor of Getz alongside some tremendous trombone work from a young Bob Brookmeyer. Rhythm is by the trio of John Williams on piano, Frank Isola on drums, and Teddy Kotick on bass – but at moments, the horns almost hang together alone, especially on the longer, mellower tracks! Titles include "I Didn't Know What Time It Was", "Willow Weep For Me", "Crazy Rhythm", "Tangerine", and "The Nearness Of You". LP, Vinyl record album

Dexter Gordon certainly was a tower of power by this point – as his lengthy 60s stay in Europe helped him to work work work, and season his playing considerably – to a point at which he emerged as a masterful soloist far beyond the limits of his early bop recordings! This session features Dexter back with an American group – one that features Barry Harris on piano, Buster Williams on bass, and Tootie Heath on drums – plus a very welcome James Moody on tenor on one track, "Monmartre", blowing in that raspier tone of the late 60s we love so much! Other titles include "Stanley The Steamer", "The Rainbow People", "Those Were The Days", "Fried Bananas", "Boston Bernie", and "Sticky Wicket", "Lady Bird", and "Meditation"all nice and long! Illinois JacquetGo Power! ... LP
Cadet, 1966. Very Good+ ... $9.99
Go Power indeed – as the album's a really stripped down groover, and one that has the tenor of Illinois Jacquet working in spare trio formation with Milt Bucker on Hammond and Alan Dawson on drums! The record's got a sound that's even earthier than some of Jacquet's other work for Argo – partially because the session was recorded live at Lennie's On The Turnpike in Boston, but also because the tracks are longer and a bit more open-ended. Buckner's a great counterpart for the album, with a groove that's deeper than we remember – and the hip drumming of Alan Dawson helps keep things in a groovier 60s mode throughout. Titles include "Watermelon Man", "Illinois Jacquet Flies Again", "On A Clear Day", and "Pamela's Blues". LP, Vinyl record album

Irene Kral with Herb PomeroyBand & I ... LP
United Artists, 1959. Near Mint- ... $33.99
Sparkling work from singer Irene Kral – and possibly the best album she ever cut! The backings here are by the Herb Pomeroy group – a slightly modern ensemble that still knows how to swing with a good dose of Boston soul – and the overall feel of the album's a lot more forceful than some of Irene's other albums, packing a punch we didn't know she had, and which we're happy to hear! There's a few cooler overtones here – somewhat in the June Christie mode – but overall the sound is upbeat, full, and swinging – served up with in arrangements by Ernie Wilkins and Al Cohn. Titles include "This Little Love", "What's Right For You", "Comes Love", "Lazy Afternoon", "I'd Know You Anywhere", and "It Isn't So Good". LP, Vinyl record album

Shelly ManneSwinging Sounds – Shelly Manne & His Men Vol 4 ... LP
Contemporary, 1956. Near Mint- ... $13.99
Charlie Mariano was one of the best things to ever happen to Shelly Manne – as the young altoist's icy talent was a perfect match for Manne's west coast cool, but his Boston soul really added a lot more emotional depth than had ever been previously recorded on some of Manne's sessions. This obscure album, one of a few that Mariano cut with Manne, is a real gem. It's got the group grooving in tight cool boppish format, but Mariano's alto cuts across the lines of playing to take things to a whole new dimension. Beserkley, 1976. Near Mint- ... $24.99
The great city of Boston lost Babe Ruth in 1920, and it was pretty much all downhill until the Modern Lovers showed up at the end of the 60s. The two chord proto-punk, pomposity-busting brilliance of Jonathan Richman and his organ-heavy (courtesy of pre-Talking Head Jerry Harrison) Modern Lovers sounds better and better every time we hear it! This is the classic first album – with "Roadrunner", "Hospital", "She Cracked", "Modern World" and the rest, the one that they recorded around 1970 and which languished as a heavily bootlegged cult classic until it's first official release in the mid 70s! Now Again, Late 70s/Early 80s. Sealed 2LP Gatefold ... $14.99
Genius work from a little-known group – but a great one too! New World Generation were an early 80s combo from the Boston scene – but they've got a groove that's very much in keeping with some of the most righteous funk acts of the late 70s – particularly those that brought a nice degree of spiritualism to their music, like James Mason or RAMP! This sweet little set carries some great echoes of that generation – a warmer, jazzier style that most other early 80s soul music you'd hear from elsewhere – and a richly-conceived vision that has New World Generation sounding way different than your usual funk, club, or boogie act of the time. Now Again have really outdone themselves with the package – bringing together rare tracks from almost-gone tape sources, and putting together a set of notes that really helps illuminate this amazing batch of music! Titles include "Sunshine", "Curious Soul", "Dreamland", "One Of A Kind", "I'm Feelin' Fine", "Mystical Planet", "New World Generation" and more. 2LP version has 11 tracks in all: including the bonus "Sunshine (Alternate Mix)" and "Curious Soul (Alternate Mix)". Trumpeter Jason Palmer has given us some great creative projects in recent years – but this time around, he's in a wonderfully back-to-basics mode – working with an excellent combo in a small club in Boston – on long tracks that really stretch out and let us hear his imaginative skill on solos! The core group is a quintet – with the excellent Noah Preminger on tenor, and Max Light ringing out nicely on guitar – driven by rhythms from Simon Willson on bass and Lee Fish on drums – players who keep a nice sense of structure in the tunes, even while things are open enough to really let the solos expand! Chris McCarthy plays Fender Rhodes on one track on each volume – and all titles are great originals by Palmer – really showing his dynamic vision as a leader. Titles on this first volume include "Gabby", "Kemerovo", "Preservation Of The Lower 9th Ward", "Be Aware", and "Stop Drop & Roll". CD

The music often has the guitars folded right into the rhythms, and some numbers have organ lines that beat most of their challengers – a list that would include The Mysterians all the way up to The Lyres – and it's clear that the Boston legacy was in very great hands during the short span this group issued rare singles for labels that include Plymouth, Bon Bon, Explosive, and Claridge – all of which are included in this great collection. A fuzzy, freaked-out classic from one of the coolest groups to work on the Chicago scene of the 60s – the mighty Shadows Of Knight, easily one of the best garage acts of their time! The album's got a raw power that's undeniable – a gritty sound that almost beats the Boston, Texas, and Sunset Strip scenes at their own game – as sharp guitars, weird Hammond, and plenty of feedback come together to blow away the listener right from the start – all with a sound that's a lot more heady than the group's better-known "Gloria" hit, with a far-reaching vibe that makes us wish these guys had kept on recording a few more years longer – because they might have given some of the best European psych acts a real run for their money! Really wonderful sounds from the enigmatic Space Lady – an artist who mostly performed on the streets of Boston and San Francisco in the 70s, but who also managed to make the handful of recordings featured in this set! The tunes are wonderfully spare, and surprisingly beautiful – often just Casio keyboards with bits of electronic processing, which is also extended to the vocals as well – which links the keys and lyrics in this spacey style that's completely sublime! At some level, Space Lady feels a bit like a street corner version of Laurie Anderson (who herself played many corners in the early years) – but there's also a more tuneful and naive approach to the music as well, which gives the whole thing a really unique approach. The group almost have a freer take on the Miles Davis electric approach – one that's not as full-on, and possibly a bit more spiritual overall – especially on the alto, soprano sax, and flute work from group leader Arnold Cheatham! Other instrumentation features trumpet, electric piano, guitar, bass, drums, and percussion – and there's a relatively freeform feel to the song composition, but the music has a highly rhythmic quality as well. Recorded in November of 1947 and originally released in '51, it's never before been issued with both the first and second sets that night. There's also a number of great tunes here that were released before in edited versions, but fully presented here. It's such wonderful stuff – both as a top-shelf document of this period of American jazz – and as a brilliant example of Satcho's charming stage presence. Polydor, 1972. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The title certainly gets it right – as the album definitely brings a bit of jazz into the mix for the great John Mayall – given that the set features strong work from funky jazz heavyweights Blue Mitchell on trumpet and Freddy Robinson on guitar! Both are musicians that we love for their late 60s records on their own, and they work mighty nicely here with Mayall in a live setting – alongside heavy saxes from Clifford Solomon, and lots of great guitar, harmonica, and piano from John Mayall himself! The style is still more blues than jazz, but definitely shows an expanding style past the more slavish roots of Mayall's early years – especially reflecting his new interaction with the American scene after the breakup of the Blues Breakers. The first side of the album features a live set from Boston – and includes "Country Road", "Mess Around", "Good Time Boogie", and "Change Your Ways" – side two is from New York shows, and features three longish tracks – "Dry Throat", "Exercise In C Major", and "Got To Be This Way". A tremendous lost performance from the great Sam Rivers – working here with an ultra-hip trio that features Cecil McBee on bass and Norman Connors on drums! The style is in that free, longform improvisation mode that Rivers hit as the 70s began – often quite spiritual in nature, even when fierce – with the leader handling some really great tenor, plus soprano sax, flute, and even a bit of piano! Norman Connors will come as quite a surprise to those who only know him from his soul-based work later on in the 70s – as he plays with a hell of a lot of power, and really drives Rivers on with his boundless energy on the drum kit. McBee is fantastic, as always – often more understated than most might be in his position, but always hitting the right spirit for the moment. If you're a Sam Rivers fan, there's plenty to love here – and the set's a completely essential additional to his catalog. The set features one long improvisation, recorded at the Jazz Workshop in Boston in 1971. CD

One of the best pre-1960 sessions by Cecil Taylor, recorded in Boston in 1956, and originally issued on the totally rare Transition label in a very small pressing! Taylor's playing here with the great bassist Buell Neidlinger, one of his prime compaitriots in the early days, and the trio (with Dennis Charles) is joined by Steve Lacy on a few tracks. The session's a great way to hear Taylor's development at the beginning, as it includes a number of jazz standards – like "Azure", "Sweet & Lovely", and "Bemsha Swing" – all given an off-kilter twist by Taylor and group. This is probably best heard on one of the album's highlights – a 9 minute solo reading of Cole Porter's "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To"! Key early work from Japanese pianist Toshiko Akioshi – a session recorded during her early years in Boston – and one that features some great work on alto from the legendary Boots Mussulli! As the title implies, half the tracks here are with a trio, half with a quartet – the latter of which has Toshiko working with Mussulli in one of her few dates at the time with a horn player! Toshiko's piano is already great at this point in her career, but the sharper edges of Boots' solos really add a lot to the set – that Boston soul sound of the 50s that you might find in the work of Charlie Mariano or Dick Johnson. Remaining quartet members include Wyatt Reuther on bass and Ed Thigpen on drums – the latter of whom also really has a great feel for Akioshi's music. The trio sides are great too – thanks to bass from Oscar Pettiford and drums from Roy Haynes – and the Storyville label should certainly be credited strongly for finding such good players for the date! Tremendous saxophone interplay throughout – and 2 great 50s sessions that both feature Art Pepper and Warne Marsh! The first half of the CD is the legendary Vanguard album Free Wheeling – one of the few sessions ever cut by tenorist Ted Brown – working here with a group that features Warne Marsh and Art Pepper in the frontline, with rhythm by Ronnie Ball on piano, Ben Tucker on bass, and Jeff Morton on drums. The session's got the outward appearance of a west coast session, but has much more soul overall – the kind of Back Bay Boston sound you'd hear in 50s sessions by Charlie Mariano or Dick Johnson – with plenty of rasp on Pepper's horn, and some nice edges on Brown's as well! Tracks are short, and often with ensemble heads – but the production is beautiful, and the interplay between the three saxophonists comes through with amazing quality! Titles include "Crazy She Calls Me", "Arrival", "Once We Were Young", "Avalon", "Foolin Myself", "Aretha", and "Long Gone". The remaining 7 tracks on the CD were recorded on the same day, but with a lineup that features Ted Brown dropping out, so that the main interplay is between Pepper's alto and Warne Marsh's tenor. Again, the sound is incredible – far fresher than most of Pepper's so-called "classic" sessions, and it shows the edge and creativity of his alto playing in a way that few other albums ever do. We really recommend this one if you've ever been disappointed by another Pepper album – because there's a sharpness here that really comes through. Titles include "All the Things You Are", "What's New", "Avalon", "Warnin", "Stompin At The Savoy", and "Tickle Toe". CD

Beautiful work from Hedy West – a folk singer with a voice that cuts through to the quick – none of the sweetness of some of the poppier acts of the 60s, and none of the softness that you might get from commercial efforts – and instead a sound that's straight from the hills, and a bit like some of the best Elektra recordings by Jean Ritchie! West plays banjo along with her vocals, but uses the instrument in a way that's almost more like acoustic guitar – very complicated note patterns, and less of the rhythmic strumming that you'd get in a hokier effort – with qualities that are often very dark and brooding. The focus here is on Gari's great reed work within a small combo – and he plays alto, clarinet, flute, and oboe on the album's tracks. Insanely wonderful early work from Charlie Mariano – some of the freshest, cleanest alto sax work of its time – blown with a tone and sense of soul that goes way beyond some of Mariano's contemporaries at the time! The album was recorded for Bethlehem Records, and is relatively straight – but Charlie already shows a sense of complexity in his presentation that hints at all the greatness to come – and which bursts out here with some refreshing energy that really makes the whole thing sparkle. Charlie's tone is impeccable – somewhere between Lee Konitz and Charlie Parker, with that back bay Boston blend of soul and modernism, making the city one of the best scenes for alto players in the 50s – and he gets some strong rhythm support from the trio of John Williams on piano, Max Bennett on bass, and Mel Lewis on drums.
