Cyclemates/Boston Tea Party/Orphan EggCycle Savages ... LP
AIP, 1970. Sealed ... $59.99
A killer biker soundtrack – with some great moments! Once again, the AIP method holds fast – take a bunch of studio musicians, form a bunch of "fake" little rock groups, and turn out a collection of instantly cooked tunes designed to capture the now sound of today! One of the groups on here sounds a heck of a lot like the Arrows – The Cyclemates, a group whose tracks are written by Jerry Styner, and feature some great guitars, tight drums, and a nice funky approach that's similar to Les Baxter's funky work. Another nice one is Orphan's Egg – who have a heavy guitar and sweet vocal approach. Titles include "Virgin's Vengeance" and "Theme From Cycle Savages" – both by the Cyclemates, and excellent funky instrumental soundtrack numbers – plus "Mourning Becomes Electra", "We Have Already Died", and "Falling" by Orphan's Egg; "Fantasy" and "Chained To Your Heart" by Boston Tea Party; and "Fly Superman Fly" by Randy Johnson. Serge ChaloffBlue Serge/Boston Blow Up ... CD
Definitive (Spain), 1955/1956. Used ... $12.99
Two classic Capitol albums by Serge Chaloff on one CD – both of them great together! Blue Serge is a classic Capitol jazz session, and one that pairs Boston baritone player Serge Chaloff with an LA rhythm section that has Sonny Clark on piano, Leroy Vinnegar on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums. The album's a perfect example of Chaloff's legendary (and short-lived) talents on the baritone – and listening to it, you'll hear how Chaloff was one of the few players ever to get such a rich tone and fluid style out of the instrument. Titles include "How About You?", "Handful Of Stars", "The Goof & I", "Susie's Blues", and "All The Things You Are". Boston Blow Up is one of a number produced by Stan Kenton for Capitol at the time, but it's far from the cooler jazz outings of other "Kenton Presents" sessions – a real Boston Blow up that has Serge standing starkly out front on the baritone, hitting some tremendous notes that show a command and dexterity on his instrument that few other players could match! Also noteworthy is the presence of the great Boots Mussulli on alto sax – a sharp-edge player with a lot of Charlie Mariano touches, and an artist who's rarely heard in a setting so stripped-down as this. Other artists include Herb Pomeroy on trumpet, Ray Santisi on piano, and Jimmy Zitano on drums – and titles include the original numbers "Kip", "Unison", "Bob The Robin", and "Sergical" – plus versions of "What's New", "Yesterday's Gardenias", and Jaki Byard's "Diane's Melody". Herbie HancockHerbie Hancock Septet – Live At The Boston Jazz Workshop ... CD
Hi Hat, 1973. Used ... $15.99
Sweet 70s electric work from the mighty Herbie Hancock – a live performance that's got some of the best spiritual elements of his late Warner Brothers years, mixed with some of the Headhunters modes to come! The album only includes two very long tracks – "Hornets" and "You'll Know When You Get There" – stretched-out, opened up, and with these magical moments from Eddie Henderson on trumpet, Benny Maupin on reeds, Julian Priester on trombone, and Buster Williams on bass. Billy Hart is on drums and "Scorch" plays congas – but both players sit back some times, and just let the magic happen from the other instrumentalists. And in addition to lots of keyboards from Hancock, Pat Gleeson adds in a bit more electronics to the mix as well. CD

Herbie Hancock & The HeadhuntersPaul's Mall Jazz Workshop Boston – November 1973 ... CD
Hi Hat, 1973. Used ... $14.99
A great live set from a time when Herbie Hancock was just getting started with his Headhunters group – that amazing combo that featured Bennie Maupin on reeds, Paul Jackson on bass, and Mike Clark on drums! The style here is almost more open and loose than on the studio albums by the group – with Herbie snaking along on these wonderful keyboard solos – while the group lay back wonderfully in the groove, and never force things at all. The sound quality is strong – the performance was initially recorded for radio – and, at some point, the recording even loses the signal from the club, and plays a commercial for Genesis in the middle! Titles include "Watermelon Man", "Chameleon", "Sly", "Butterfly", and a few spoken bits by Herbie. CD

Gerry MulliganGerry Mulligan Quartet Recorded In Boston At Storyville ... LP
Pacific Jazz, 1956. Very Good ... Just Sold Out!
Gerry Mulligan brings the piano back in nicely here – but in a way that still hangs onto all the best modern tones of his earlier Pacific Jazz sessions! The date's a live one – done at Storyville in Boston – but the sound is wonderfully intimate, with Gerry on baritone sax and piano, Bob Brookmeyer on valve trombone, Bill Crow on bass, and Dave Bailey on drums. The Crow/Bailey rhythm section is superb – nicely swinging throughout – and Gerry's work on piano has that airy, moody quality that would show up even more strongly in the 60s. Titles include "Bweebida Bwobbida", "Open Country", "Rustic Hop", "Bike Up The Strand", and "Storyville Story". LP, Vinyl record album

VariousBoston Goes Disco – Obscure Disco, Boogie, & Modern Soul From Boston Mass & The Surrounding Areas ... CD
BBE (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 19.99
A huge discovery in music – most of which we've never heard before, and which shows that the Boston scene was getting pretty busy during the classic club years – even if the city's grooves never reached the same fame as cuts from New York, Philly, and other points south! The package is definitely a labor of love – put together by DJ/collector Serge Gamesbourg – who's clearly done a hell of a lot of work to unearth these rare singles and small label releases – records that maybe didn't even make it down to New York City back in the day, and which were probably crowed out of the record racks, even if they did! Most of these cuts are nicely rough around the edges – sometimes in more of a fast funk mode, other times with all the cool offbeat touches of indie label club cuts – and almost all numbers get a special Serge Gamesbourg edit, in order to bring out the grooviest elements of the tracks. Titles include "No More Games" by Larry Wedgeworth & Clique, "All In Good Time" by Wildlife featuring Vi Taylor, "Play It By Ear" by Cojo, "Get Up & Dance Don't Want No Party Poo Pershere" by Carrie Mims & Herbe Lee River Junction, "Feel The Music" by Dreamflight, "I Want Your Body" by Royale, "Free For All" by Second Wind, "I'm Gonna Get You (Meeow)" by Carrie Mims & Herb Lee River Junction, "You Make Me Happy" by Christopher Michael Band, "Keep It Comin On" by Gypsy, and "Fire Funk" by Hypnotics. 2CD set features one disc of the music in a continuous mix by Serge – the other with unmixed versions. VariousTake Us Home – Boston Roots Reggae 1979 to 1988 ... CD
Cultures Of Soul, Late 70s/1980s. New Copy ... $14.99 15.98
A surprisingly strong collection of reggae recorded in Boston during the 80s – or maybe not that surprising at all, given that the city had a growing Caribbean population, and a very strong college audience for the music! Still, the package is a huge discovery – strong quality work from a city that most folks would associate with just about any other style of music – with a key emphasis on the sorts of message-oriented cuts that helped reggae find a huge global audience in the generation of Bob Marley – carried forth here by a host of local acts working in very faithful, well-produced modes. The set's got a great booklet of notes – more than enough detail and explanation for this unique musical moment – and titles include "Take Us Home" and "Our Father's Land" by Danny Tucker, "Country Girl" and "Two Minute Warning"by Lambsbread, "Errol's Love" and "Oh What A Saturday Night" by Errol Strength, "Without Your Love" and "Nations Unite" by Healing Of The Nations, "Burning Fire" and "Condemnation Lion" by Zion Initiation, and "Love Is A Pleasure" by I Tones. Melodic psychedelic rock from Boston's Beacon Street Union – one of a pair of great records the group cut for MGM in the late 60s! James BrownSay It Live & Loud – Live In Dallas 1968 (with bonus tracks) ... LP
Polydor, 1968. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $26.99 34.99
An amazing James Brown live set from the crucial year of 1968 – the show that marked the debut of "Say It Loud I'm Black & I'm Proud" – a cut that would become an anthem for much of America in the years to come! The feel here is somewhat similar to Brown's famous Boston show of the same year – a mix of blistering uptempo funk tracks, played by the band at a clip that's even faster than their studio sides, mixed with a few more stripped-down, personal cuts that feature James getting a bit more intimate with the audience. The production quality of the set is wonderful – and it leaves in all the hip spoken bits between tracks, really preserving the liveness of the concert, and packaging the whole thing with some great notes and photos too! Titles include "I Guess I'll Have To Cry Cry Cry", "Say It Loud", "If I Ruled The World", "There Was A Time", "Maybe The Last Time", "I Got The Feeling", "Cold Sweat", "Please Please Please", "Tighten Up", "Licking Stick", and lots more! Cat Mother & The All Night News BoysStreet Giveth & The Street Taketh Away ... CD
Polydor, 1968. Used ... $11.99
A legendary batch of funky rock tracks – noteworthy not only for production by Jimi Hendrix, but also for the group's insanely great groove! There's a bluesy undercurrent here, but sharpened much more strongly for the funk generation – which takes Cat Mother way past contemporaries like Canned Heat or The Steve Miller Band – yet also still has the gritty power of both of those groups. Jimi's production is surprisingly great – fused tightly at times, in ways that almost preface some modes that bigger acts would take rootsy sounds in the 70s, but much more revolutionary here. The set's worth it alone for the trippy instrumental jam "Track In A", and other tracks include "Can You Dance To It", "Marie", "How I Spent My Summer", "Bramble Bush", "Boston Burglar", and "Favors". Chesapeake Juke Box BandChesapeake Juke Box Band ... LP
Greene Bottle, 1971. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $14.99
A glorious relic of early 70s studio pop – and a record that's awash in unapologetic references to The Beatles and The Beach Boys! Chesapeake Jukebox Band were a short-lived collaboration between singer-songwriters Steve Sawyer and Freddie McFinn, who are working here with genius producer Ron Frangipone in the best compressed style of the legendary Record Plant studios. There's lessons here learned clearly from Brian Wilson, Phil Spector, George Martin, and some of the hipsters on the late 60s Warner scene – but an overall approach that's a bit more personal in the lyrics – which makes for a great combination with the loftier production of the album. At one level, there's also a spaciousness here that reminds us a bit of later work from the UK pop scene – but again, the whole thing's a bit more down to earth, in a way that we really like. Titles include "Sad Nite In Boston", "This Time", "Jennifer", "Love", "Until We Meet Again", "Daisies For The 8th Of May", "Fizbee's Tavern", and "The Door's Unlatched". CD also features 3 bonus tracks – "Don't Howdy Doody On Me", "Crime Of The Century", and "Don't Cry Your Eyes Out". LP, Vinyl record album

David Allen CoeHuman Emotions/Spectrum VII ... CD
Columbia/Bear Family (Germany), 1978/1979. New Copy ... $13.99 24.99
Back to back David Allen Coe – two Columbia classics on a single CD! Human Emotions is one of those amazing 70s albums from David Allan Coe – from a time when he could mix his rough and rowdy roots with a new sort of sensitivity – all without making either side of his spectrum seem forced at all! Coe's a master of the mellow ballad – serving up love songs that are maybe more human, and feel less fake than most of the big country hits of the period – which are then mixed with tunes that tap into more of his hard-drinkin, hard-livin side of life – making for a richly satisfying tapestry of a mainstream country record! Titles include "You Can Count On Me", "Whiskey & Women", "Jack Daniels If You Please", "Suicide", "Tomorrow Is Another Day", "Would You Lay With Me In A Field Of Stone", "If This Is Just A Game", and "She's Finally Crossed Over Love's Cheatin Line". Spectrum VII is an interesting record – as the original cover looked a bit cheesy – with a bare-chested David Allan Coe standing on the beach, wearing a huge belt buckle bearing his name – but the record's prime work from a time when the singer was really coming into his own! Some of the rawness of his roots has been toned down a bit, but that's been replaced by a new sort of confidence that not only really works with the material, but which also puts Coe forward with a quality that should have made him a bigger crossover artist, if he wasn't still too darn country! Titles include "Seven Mile Bridge", "Fairytale Morning", "Sudden Death", "Rollin With The Punches", "On My Feet Again", "Now's The Time To Fall In Love", and "What Can I Do". CD also features the bonus track "Please Come To Boston" – Coe's superior recording of the 70s hit. CD

✨✧ John CorbettPick Up The Pieces – Excursions In 70s Music (hardcover) ... Book
University Of Chicago, 2019. New Copy ... $22.99 30.00
Writer John Corbett has given us words on a huge variety of musical styles over the years – a fair bit of them left field and avant – but this time around, he's tackling the full range of 70s rock, pop, and soul music – in a huge book that's unlike anything he's ever written before! First off, the large volume is very personal – part listening autobiography, part paean to the musical giants who shaped the decade, and part hindsight record review of all the amazing sounds that were created during the 70s! The book follows the decade with year-by-year chapters – yet it's hardly a history at all – as Corbett picks key songs and albums as touchstones for each year – partly because of their impact, but more because of the power they had for him as a listener. The albums run the gamut – from Nursery Cryme by Genesis, to Les Stances A Sophie by The Art Ensemble Of Chicago, to Pink Moon by Nick Drake – and songs include "Sex Machine" by James Brown, "School's Out" by Alice Cooper, and "Long Time" by Boston. 496 pages, hardcover. A thematic rap triumph from the hip hop superhero team of Czarface – already a veritable supergroup featuring Boston underground veterans 7L & Esoteric with the Wu Tang's Inspectah Deck – bringing in Wu MVP Ghostface Killah for the unsurprisingly massive Czarface Meets Ghostface! One of the standout facets of the Czarface project since the beginning is they way 7L, Esoteric and Inspectah Deck roll with the comic book hero theme without overdoing it in a way that pushes the thematic vibe into gimmickry – major props to 7L for laying down fuzzy funk beats and comic book action in a way that's action-packed larger than life, yet succinct and on target – and doesn't hurt bring in some of the best rappers in the game on each successive effort. Well, it's not the Plugged Nickel or electric Japan in the 70s – but this is a surprisingly great 2LP set of live work by Miles from the early 80s – recorded in New York and Boston, with a lively full-on concert sort of feel! The group features Marcus Miller on bass, Bill Evans on soprano sax, Al Foster on drums, Mike Stern on guitar, and Mino Cinelu on percussion – and the tracks are long tunes, done with a bit of electricity, and sort of a joyous approach overall. EmArcy, 1955. Near Mint- ... $11.99
A pretty great little album by the multi-reed player Ralph Gari – and obscure New York talent that we've only ever heard on this one side cut for Mercury during the 50s. The focus here is on Gari's great reed work within a small combo – and he plays alto, clarinet, flute, and oboe on the album's tracks. His alto work is fairly heavily featured, which is great, because he's a tight angular player in the Boston soul mode of artists like Dick Johnson or Charlie Mariano. Backing is by a piano trio on each side, and titles include "Kali", "Fourth Dimension", "Happy Daze", "That Old Black Magic", and "The Way You Look Tonight". Great stuff, and kind of like some of the excellent Hal McKusick albums from the same time! LP, Vinyl record album

RCA, 1967. Near Mint- ... $6.99
A beautiful bit of lost Getz from the 60s – a record of incredible depth that's somehow gotten lost in the shuffle of time! The album has Stan playing at Tanglewood with a core group that includes Gary Burton, Jim Hall, Steve Swallow, and Roy Haynes, plus musical backings by the Boston Pops – conducted by Arthur Fiedler in a style that's somehow without any of the hoke of his other recordings of the time, and which manages to give Stan some of the best "with orchestra" backings he's ever gotten! There's none of the overwrought modernism of some of the other Getz/orchestra collaborations that we never seem to like as much – and Stan's in incredible Spring Rain-like tone on the whole thing – blowing magically through both the lush and grooving numbers alike! Titles include "Tanglewood Concerto", "Where Do You Go", "Three Ballads For Stan", "A Song After Sundown", and a great orchestral take on "Girl From Ipanema". LP, Vinyl record album

The backings here are by the Herb Pomeroy group – a slightly modern ensemble that still knows how to swing with a good dose of Boston soul – and the overall feel of the album's a lot more forceful than some of Irene's other albums, packing a punch we didn't know she had, and which we're happy to hear! There's a few cooler overtones here – somewhat in the June Christie mode – but overall the sound is upbeat, full, and swinging – served up with in arrangements by Ernie Wilkins and Al Cohn. Charlie Mariano was one of the best things to ever happen to Shelly Manne – as the young altoist's icy talent was a perfect match for Manne's west coast cool, but his Boston soul really added a lot more emotional depth than had ever been previously recorded on some of Manne's sessions. This obscure album, one of a few that Mariano cut with Manne, is a real gem. It's got the group grooving in tight cool boppish format, but Mariano's alto cuts across the lines of playing to take things to a whole new dimension. Insanely wonderful early work from Charlie Mariano – some of the freshest, cleanest alto sax work of its time – blown with a tone and sense of soul that goes way beyond some of Mariano's contemporaries at the time! The album was recorded for Bethlehem Records, and is relatively straight – but Charlie already shows a sense of complexity in his presentation that hints at all the greatness to come – and which bursts out here with some refreshing energy that really makes the whole thing sparkle. Charlie's tone is impeccable – somewhere between Lee Konitz and Charlie Parker, with that back bay Boston blend of soul and modernism, making the city one of the best scenes for alto players in the 50s – and he gets some strong rhythm support from the trio of John Williams on piano, Max Bennett on bass, and Mel Lewis on drums. Genius work from a little-known group – but a great one too! New World Generation were an early 80s combo from the Boston scene – but they've got a groove that's very much in keeping with some of the most righteous funk acts of the late 70s – particularly those that brought a nice degree of spiritualism to their music, like James Mason or RAMP! This is the great Blue Note two-fer from the 70's that combines two rare Cecil Taylor albums from the 50's – one recorded for the Transition label, one for United Artists. First up is Jazz Advance – one of the best pre-1960 sessions by Cecil Taylor, recorded in Boston in 1956, and originally issued on the totally rare Transition label in a very small pressing! Taylor's playing here with the great bassist Buell Neidlinger, one of his prime compaitriots in the early days, and the trio (with Dennis Charles) is joined by Steve Lacy on a few tracks. The session's a great way to hear Taylor's development at the beginning, as it includes a number of jazz standards – like "Azure", "Sweet & Lovely", and "Bemsha Swing" – all given an off-kilter twist by Taylor and group. This is probably best heard on one of the album's highlights – a 9 minute solo reading of Cole Porter's "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To"! Next is Love For Sale – a stunner of an album from Cecil Taylor's early days – a set that features three early trio tracks – which let you hear Cecil developing his freer approach on strange takes on Cole Porter's "Get Out of Town", "I Love Paris", and "Love For Sale". The other three tracks are originals by Taylor, and expand the group to a quintet with the amaaaaazing frontline talents of Ted Curson on trumpet and Bill Barron on tenor, always one of our favorite pair of modernists, and players that add richness to any session they grace. Beautiful work from Hedy West – a folk singer with a voice that cuts through to the quick – none of the sweetness of some of the poppier acts of the 60s, and none of the softness that you might get from commercial efforts – and instead a sound that's straight from the hills, and a bit like some of the best Elektra recordings by Jean Ritchie! West plays banjo along with her vocals, but uses the instrument in a way that's almost more like acoustic guitar – very complicated note patterns, and less of the rhythmic strumming that you'd get in a hokier effort – with qualities that are often very dark and brooding. A great assemblage of rare early material by Charles Mingus – recorded, as the title implies, on the west coast during the late 40s. The range of styles is pretty strong – as some tracks are small group sides, some larger ensembles, some with vocalists, and others more experimental – but the tunes are all united by a tightness even in the face of more complicated settings, showing Mingus as an incredibly talented leader even at this early point in his career. There's strands of bop and swing moving through the set with a dark edge – especially on the vocal numbers, which often have a off-beat sound that's quite different than the usual singer-with-band 40s approach. The style is in that free, longform improvisation mode that Rivers hit as the 70s began – often quite spiritual in nature, even when fierce – with the leader handling some really great tenor, plus soprano sax, flute, and even a bit of piano! Norman Connors will come as quite a surprise to those who only know him from his soul-based work later on in the 70s – as he plays with a hell of a lot of power, and really drives Rivers on with his boundless energy on the drum kit. McBee is fantastic, as always – often more understated than most might be in his position, but always hitting the right spirit for the moment. If you're a Sam Rivers fan, there's plenty to love here – and the set's a completely essential additional to his catalog. The set features one long improvisation, recorded at the Jazz Workshop in Boston in 1971. CD

✨✧ Thing (Arnold Cheatham)Thing ... LP
Innerview/Cultures Of Soul, 1972. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A spacey set from the Boston scene of the 70s – heavy on electric elements, but with some great acoustic bits as well! The group almost have a freer take on the Miles Davis electric approach – one that's not as full-on, and possibly a bit more spiritual overall – especially on the alto, soprano sax, and flute work from group leader Arnold Cheatham! Other instrumentation features trumpet, electric piano, guitar, bass, drums, and percussion – and there's a relatively freeform feel to the song composition, but the music has a highly rhythmic quality as well. The album features 2 long tracks – "Sketch" and "Road Through The Wall" – both with a nicely loose, nicely spiritual vibe! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Barrence Whitfield Soul Savage ArkestraSongs From The Sun Ra Cosmos ... CD
Modern Harmonic, Early 90s/2019. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really surprising project from long-running Boston soul singer Barrence Whitfield – a set of songs from the Sun Ra side of the universe – delivered with a vibe that's a bit different than some of Whitfield's other material! The package features tracks from two different periods – the first, a series of early 90s recordings that focus more on the soul-styled sound of Ra's 45rpm output – the second, a bit more far-reaching, and maybe more Ra-like overall – but with plenty of vocals from Barrence upfront! Brother Cleve handles keyboards and a fair bit of the arrangements – and titles include remakes of "Black Man", "I'm Gonna Unmask The Batman", "Somebody Else's World", "Nuclear War", "Everything Is Space", and "Love In Outer Space". ✨✧ Billie HolidayBanned From New York City – Live 1948 to 1957 ... CD
Uptown, Late 40s/1950s. Used 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Wonderful live work from the second chapter of Billie Holiday's career – that stretch when she was barred from performing in most New York clubs, due to the loss of her cabaret card – which actually seemed to lead to a wider range of exposure in venues across the country! The overstuffed 2CD set brings together a number of very well-recorded live dates from cities that include Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Chicago, and Boston – plus work from a show in Brussels, and a TV appearance on Steve Allen's early Tonight Show – some material that's only been out partially before, mixed with other tracks that are seeing the light of day for the first time ever. Most numbers have very small combo backing – with players who include Carl Drinkard, Jimmy Rowles, or Bobby Tucker on piano – plus Herbie Harper on trombone, Neal Hefti on trumpet, Red Norvo on vibes, and Paul Quinichette on tenor. But the real star is clearly Billie throughout – and these tracks aren't just "extras" added to her studio work or live sides for Verve – and instead show how Holiday always shone throughout her career, and continued to bring a very personal approach to every performance. 2CD set features a whopping 42 tracks, with lots of notes – and titles include a number of Holiday standards, plus some lesser-known gems too. ✨✧ Ultimate SpinachBehold & See ... LP
MGM, 1968. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Legendary psych from the late 60s Boston scene! The group's self-titled earlier set is a gem for sure, but this more ambitious, far out, yet groovy effort really is a wonder to behold! It's got nicely tripped out sounds, but never flying to far out with the fuzzy instrumentation, and stays grounded in solid songcraft – with benchmark psych era touches, and some surprising sounds, too. Lead singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Ian Bruce-Douglas's trippy songs are given a lovlier, ethereal vibe here with the addition of singer Barbara Jean Hudson, and titles include "Gilded Lamp Of The Cosmos", "Visions Of Your Reality", "Jazz Thing", "Mind Flowers", "Where You're At", "Fifth Horseman Of The Apocalypse", 'Fragmentary March Of Green" the sprawling, 10 minute "Suite: Genesis Of Beauty". Silver Age, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Includes "Back At Ringside", "Face Off", "Iron Claw", "Czarcade '87", "Powers & Stuff", "Masked Superstars", "The King Heard Voices", "Listen To The Color", "Mongolian Beef" and "(Post Credits Scene)". Transition/EMI (Japan), 1956. Used ... Out Of Stock
Beautiful hardbop from Boston! A young Donald Byrd fronts a rare quartet session on this hard-to-find recording that was originally cut for the obscure Transition label – pre-Blue Note material that's easily some of Donald's best material from the early years! The record features a very different side than some of Byrd's other early two-leader sessions – especially as he blows with a warmth and moodiness that we don't normally hear from him at this point. The rest of the group includes Ray Santisi piano, Doug Watkins bass, and Jim Zitano drums – and titles include "Little Rock Getaway", "If I Love Again", "What's New", and "Stella By Starlight". CD

✨✧ Cat Mother & The All Night News BoysStreet Giveth & The Street Taketh Away ... LP
Polydor, 1968. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
