Some of the deepest work we've ever heard from Jamaican funk giant BorisGardiner – and a set that might have been called "Ultra Rare Dub" instead – given the obscurity of the recordings! The core material here is from 45s that Boris issues in the early 70s – the kind of heavy grooves that have made him as much of a legend with funk collectors as reggae fans – but the tracks are taken to very different territory than the originals, in keeping with the dub promised in the title – yet with a sense of variety that's very different than other dub albums of this nature! Currents of American soul come into play as much as reggae roots – and instrumentation and rhythms vary nicely throughout, which really keeps things interesting. The original albums were issued in very tiny runs, and titles include "Freedom Roots", "Expression (dub)", "Racking Roots", "Love (dub)", "Paying Roots", "Mine (dub)", "Rider Roots", and "Gimmy (dub)". LP, Vinyl record album

BorisGardiner —
Soulful Experience ... LP Dynamic Sounds, 1971. Very Good+ ...
Temporarily Out Of Stock
Another one of Gardiner's soul LPs, with nary a touch of reggae showing. Like Johnny Nash, who also recorded for Byron Lee, these soul sides have a smooth, polished sound, more in line with the sophisticated soul you might expect from a Brunswick LP than anyting out of Kingston. Tracks include "Loves Been Good To Me", "Paradise For Fools", "Don't Take Away", "Jean", "Strangers In The Night", "Today, "One Woman", "The Captive", "Raindrops" & "Phoenix". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has a split top seam, partial bottom seam split, a tiny tear at the opening on the top & bottom, light surface wear & aging.)
A stone funky LP of soulful grooves from Jamaica! Boris and crew are part of the rocksteady/early reggae years – but they've also got plenty of influences from American funk acts of the late 60s, as you'll hear on this very tasty set! The landmark cut on here is the group's excellent cover of Booker T & the MG's "Melting Pot" – done almost better than Booker's own version – and other cuts are a mix of 70s soul and reggae grooves, done with some nice bubbling organ. Titles include "Breezin", "Ain't No Sunshine", "Let's Stay Together", "What's Happening", "Same Old Way", and "Happiness Is A Warm Pussin". LP, Vinyl record album
(Orange and yellow label pressing, with "Happening" in runoff groove. Cover has a light bump in one corner, but is great overall.)

Heptones —
Party Time ... CD Palm/Mango, 1964. Used ...
Out Of Stock
A party time indeed! This is the follow up to Night Food, and a set that nearly equals its predecessot, as a great example of what Leroy Sibbles and the Heptones were capable of when teaming up with Lee Perry! Laid down at the legendary Black Ark, this set's one of the band's strongest LPs, with Sibbles' always great songwriting over a batchof tight roots rhythms laid down by BorisGardiner, Winston Wright, Mikey Boo, Willie Lindo and others. 10 songs in all, including "Party Time", "Crying Over You", "I Shall Be Released", "Why Must I" and "Sufferer's Time". CD
(Out of print.)
