Joel VandroogenbroeckImages Of Flute In Nature ... LP
Cenacolo/Bonfire (Italy), 1978. New Copy (reissue)... $32.99 36.99
Images of flute, and some mighty cool keyboards too – a sweet sound library set that mixes the reed work of Joel Vandroogenbroeck with electric touches that create a killer sound that's not unlike some of the 70s soundtrack material by Sven Libaek! Joel's lead lines have the expressive feel of a jazz player, but they're mixed with these dreamy keys that stretch out in very cool ways – often a bit watery or organic, but never in any sort of a new agey mode! Instead, the record's almost like some of the best Chris Hinze work from a few years before – or, even better, the sort of thing you always hope for from Chris Hinze, but never seem to hear this well. Carole Muriel serves up some cool wordless vocals on a few numbers – and titles include "Hobbits", "Electronic Jungle", "Plaine Du Jura", "Magic Adventure", and "Magnetic Blues". ✨✧ Veronique ChalotJ'Ai Vu Le Loup (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Materiali Sonori/Bonfire (Italy), 1978. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Veronique Chalot sings in French, but she cut this beautiful album for the Materiali Sonori label in Italy – with a really groundbreaking mix of styles that definitely loves up to the other gems we love on the label at the time! As you might guess from the cover, Veronique plays dulcimer, and sings in a dreamy style that befits her image on the front – but the small group behind her also brings in all sorts of other unusual instrumentation – flutes, percussion, bass, and violin – used in these eerie ways alongside Chalot's moody vocals – creating a vibe that's somewhere between early solo work by Nico, and the soundtrack to Wicker Man! A really haunting record throughout – a lot like the best experiments on the Saravah label – with titles that include "L'Empoisonneusse", "Chant De La Montagne", "Le Souliers De La Belle", "Danse Des Sorcieres", "Chant De La Mer", "An Dro-Ronde", and "Bourree". ✨✧ GrapefruitAround Grapefruit (2024 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Dunhill/Bonfire (Italy), 1968. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Incredible pop psych sounds from Grapefruit – a group who might be best known for their early inclusion in the Beatles' Apple Corps – but who can easily stand on their own with the strength of material like this! The production is superb, and the overall vision in the music is sublime – trippy touches, but never too many – and vocals that echo out with both a sense of harmony in the group, and some beautiful larger touches in the studio! The whole thing's got a subtle power that we'd rank right up there with The Zombies, just as they were starting to get great! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ BachdenkelLemmings (with bonus tracks) ... LP
Philips/Bonfire (Italy), 1973. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The overlooked debut of Bachdenkel – maybe not the biggest name on the British scene at the start of the 70s, but a group who were initially signed to Philips, and made some really fantastic music! The group are a trio, and it's a bit hard to sum up the quality of the work in easy words – as it's sometimes very personal, but not folksy at all – other times a bit more instrumentally intense, yet not really prog either – always somewhat dark overall, and never trying at all for an easy hook or the kind of track that might have gotten them any sort of radio play at all. The lineup features guitar, organ, and piano from Colin Swinburne – plus drums from Brian Smith, and six string bass from Peter Kimberley – on titles that include "Long Time Living", "Strangerstill", "Come All Ye Faceless", "The Settlement Song", "An Appointment With The Master", and "Translation". 2LP pressing features the bonus tracks "A Thousand Pages Before", "Donna", and "The Slightest Distance". ✨✧ Christine HarwoodNice To Meet Miss Christine (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Birth/Bonfire (Italy), Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Jazzy wonderfulness from Chris Harwood – not a jazz singer herself, but one who gets some superb backings from a range of British musicians – all of whom take her folk-tinged vocals into territory that makes for a wonderfully unique record! The approach is one of those rare studio moments when things come together in a really magical way – with a quality that's laidback and easygoing, as if everyone is just sliding into a groove – but with results that are nicely focused, and a sound that's beautifully cohesive throughout the entire set! The record features work by prog heavyweights like Ian McDonald on saxes and Dave Lambert on guitar – but isn't a prog set at all, as you'll hear on tracks that include "Hear What I Have To Say", "Never Knew What Love Was", "Wooden Ships", "Before You Right Now", "Crying To Be Heard", "Question Of Time", "When I Got Home", "Romance", "Ain't Gonna Be Your Slave", "Flies Like A Bird", and "Mama". ✨✧ QuatrainQuatrain ... LP
Tetragrammaton/Bonfire (Italy), 1969. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A really heady record from this obscure LA group – one of the few albums of its type issued on the Tetragrammaton label, and maybe a good precursor to the famous role that Deep Purple would have on the imprint! Yet while Quatrain are in the same heady company as that famous group, they also have a style that maybe reflects their scene a bit more – a trippy blend of earlier garage styles and newer psych influences – not yet hard rock, and with a sense of fuzz that really follows from their image on the cover – making everything sound a bit distorted and nicely out of focus. Titles include "Try To Live Again", "Black Lily", "Early Morning Company", "Ask Me No Questions", "Unconquered Islands", "Fields Of Love", and "Canyon Woman". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Matt BerryKill The Wolf (10th anniversary edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Acid Jazz (UK), 2013. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A pivotal record in the career of the great Matt Berry – a set that firmly established him as a musical act away from his work on the screen – not his first album, but one that really seems to have Berry finding his very unique voice! A number of the tunes have a slight nod to spookiness – an element that maybe prefaces Berry's role in What We Do In The Shadows – and the instrumentation has more Wicker Man-like elements at times than some of the mod-styled backings on other of Matt's records – although you can definitely hear his love of vintage keyboards on the album too. Tracks include "Vintage Dance", "Farewell Summer Sun", "Bonfire", "The Signs", "Solstice", "Wolf Quartet", "Fallen Angel", and "October Sun". This edition features all sorts of great tracks recorded at the original sessions – almost doubling the size of the record with cuts that include "Fire Chant", "Food Chain Blues", "October", "Sea Chant", "Honky Knock", "Venison Sketch", "The Dawn", and "To The Floor". ✨✧ Roberto OlzerMoon & The Bonfires ... LP
Sawano/Jazz Shinsekai (Japan), 2015. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A warmly robust piano trio and one with a really magnificent sound – a real richness that comes from the subtle command of the keys expressed by Roberto Olzer – a player who has this way of being gently emotive, through a great sense of tone – a quality that's also underscored by superb work on bass from Yuri Goloubev! The pair aren't exactly household names in jazz, but they work here alongside excellent drums from Maruo Beggio – in a beautiful set that really lives up to the long legacy of sublime piano trio recordings we've enjoyed from the Sawano label! The set's also got some really great tracks that round out the set – originals that include "Charisma", "La Luna E I Falo", "Little Requiem", "La Bella Estate", and "Le Vieux Charme" – plus a great take on the Ryuichi Sakamoto tune "Bibo No Aozora", and other titles that include "Seaward", "Beautiful Love", and a version of Poulenc's "Adagio" LP, Vinyl record album
(Beautiful Japanese pressing – heavy cover and vinyl!)
