Bobbie GentryGirl From Chickasaw County – Highlights ... CD
Capitol, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $27.99 29.99
A stunning tribute to the wonderful Bobbie Gentry – and maybe the first package to really show the world how much she has to offer past her one classic crossover hit! Bobbie started out like a rocket with the country gem "Ode To Billie Joe" – a tune she wrote herself, and followed with lots of other great music on her debut album – which then set the scene for a great expansion into other modes, as Capitol Records really opened up their resources for Gentry to record in the late 60s! This double-length set really gets at the full scope of sounds that Bobbie created for Capitol – and includes way more than hits, with some rare tracks from obscure later albums, singles, and even a big number of titles that didn't even see the light of day until a 2018 box set issued with a similar title. 2CD set features a massive 46 tracks in all – and tunes include the rare "Sweete Peony (alt)", "Sunday Mornin (alt)", "Conspiracy Of Homer Jones", "Let It Be Me (without strings)", "Apartment 21 (stereo)", "Smoke", "Joanne", "The Girl From Cincinnati", "Circle Round The Sun", "Seasons Come Seasons Go (demo)", "Refractions", "Courtyard", and "Sittin Pretty" – plus lots more titles that only first appeared in 2018. The set also features new remixes of "Casket Vignette" and "Recollection" – and the classic titles "Chickasaw County Child" and "Ode To Billie Joe". CD

✨✧ Bobbie GentryOde To Billie Joe (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Capitol/Elemental (Spain), 1967. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A key late 60s country crossover set, but one that also inspired a fair bit of funk as well! The title cut's a well-known gem – one that's been covered instrumentally in some break-heavy versions, but which sounds even more amazing here in Bobbie's original version – one of the moodiest pop tunes we've ever heard, with lyrics, and a way of presenting them, that still leaves us breathless all these many years later. There's also some other funky bits here too – Gentry's raspy "Mississippi Delta" – an original number that almost seems to unseat Tina Turner for down-home soul – and the groovy "Sunday Best", "Niki Hoeky", "Papa Won't You Let Me Go To Town With You", and "Chickasaw Country Child", all numbers that echo the same lilting acoustic guitar grooves of "Billie Joe". ✨✧ Michel Legrand/Bobbie GentryOde To Billy Joe ... LP
Warner, 1978. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A very cool lost moment from the great Michel Legrand – a selection of soundtrack tunes he did for a late 70s TV film based on the Bobbie Gentry tune! Side one is all Legrand – side two features songs by Gentry, Thurman Box, Hoyt Ming, and Morgan Gilmer – all more country-oriented. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Bobbie GentryDelta Sweete (2CD deluxe edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Capitol, 1968. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A sublime album from the great Bobbie Gentry – and maybe her strongest full-length set recorded during the classic Capitol years! The title's "sweete" is a hillbilly play on the word "suite" – and the album definitely works as an extended suite of tracks – almost a concept album, and one that mixes lots of Bobbie's own tunes with a few well-chosen covers – all set to larger arrangements that feature strings from Jimmie Haskell and horns directed by Shorty Rogers – all while Gentry leads the combo at the core! Later Capitol albums had Gentry doing a lot of covers, and maybe losing her identity a bit – but this set is more of an expansion on the mode she brought to the "Billie Joe" single – with tracks that include "Reunion", "Mornin Glory", "Sermon", "Penduli Pendulum", "Jessye Lisabeth", "Courtyard", "Okolona River Bottom Band", and "Refractions". 2CD version features a brand new stereo mix from the original tapes, the original mono mix of the album, and bonus tracks that include demos of "Mornin Glory", "Sermon", "Jessye Lisabeth", "Louisiana Man", "Refractions", "The Way I Do", and "Feelin Good" – plus an instrumental of "Okolona River Bottom Band", and an alternate take of "Mississippi Delta". ✨✧ Jody ReynoldsComplete Demon & Titan Masters ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
The complete early recordings of Jody Reynolds – an artist who's probably best known for a famous early entry in the "death rock" genre, but one who's got a heck of a lot more to offer than just that one tune! Reynolds is a west coast rocker, and works here in a beautiful blend of tear-stained melancholy and more open-minded early rock – often with some of the currents blowing west from the Arizona scene, especially in the twang used on his guitar! And although Reynolds may look a bit like Buddy Holly on the cover image, he's got a moodier quality to his vocals overall – which are often recorded in a way that's as echoey as his guitar, and underscores some of the darker elements in his music. The production on most numbers is great – with a key sonic element or effect that makes each of these old singles so wonderful – and titles include his classic "Endless Sleep", plus "Kiss Of Love", "My Baby's Gone", "Tight Capris", "The Storm", "The Girl With The Raven Hair", "A Tear For Jesse", "Shot Down", "Golden Idol", and "Devil Girl". Also features two early duets with Bobbie Gentry – "Requiem For Love" and "Stranger In The Mirror". CD

✨✧ Sammi SmithLooks Like Stormy Weather 1969 to 1975 ... CD
Mega/Ace (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Really fantastic work from the overlooked Sammi Smith – a country singer with a name that sounds a bit sweet, but a style that had her taking on some much hipper material than some of her contemporaries! In a way, Sammi's the kind of singer who was born in the generation of Bobbie Gentry and Jeannie C Riley – able to take on more topical styles, and also mix in some more sophisticated modes to her music too – both in the lyrical themes, and in the manner of presentation – served up here with some very nice arrangements from Bergen White and Bill Walker, who handled a lot of her material during the years of these Mega Records recordings! The set is is wonderfully well-chosen – handled by Bob Stanley, with a real ear for some of the real standout cuts that Sammi handled during these years. Titles include "Desperados Waiting For A Train", "The Toast Of 45", "When Michael Calls", "Jimmy's In Georgia", "Birmingham Mistake", "The Good For Something Years", "But You Know I Love You", "This Room For Rent", "Saunders' Ferry Lane", "Manhattan Kansas", "I Miss You Most When You're Right Here", and "I Was Just Fifteen".
