Arista/Grateful Dead, 1981. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the key live Grateful Dead albums from the 80s – a set that's a bit of a partner to Dead Set, as the tracks were recorded around the same period – and a record that definitely showcases the love of acoustic roots that had really been foregrounded in the group's music by the end of the 70s, especially in a concert setting! The shift is no real surprise, as the sound was always there at the core – but the vibe here is far from the freakier world of the SF scene, and more in the territory that Jerry Garcia was exploring on his many side projects of the 70s. There's plenty of great guitar interplay between Garcia and Bob Weir – and titles include "The Race Is On", "Oh Babe It Ain't No Lie", "Dire Wolf", "Dark Hollow", "Monkey & The Engineer", "Deep Elem Blues", "Cassidy", "China Doll", "Been All Around This World", "Rosalie McFall", "Ripple", and "On The Road Again". ✨✧ Rick Jones/Michael Cole/Michael JessettFingerbobs – Original Television Music ... CD
Trunk (UK), Early 1970s. New Copy ... $3.99 16.99
Delightfully creepy work from a 70s UK TV show – light little tunes that have a sing-song approach that almost feels like a program done for the kids on the Wicker Man island! Instrumentation is light guitar, flute, and other jazzy bits – penned by Michael Cole and Michael Jessett – but the real charm of the collection lies in the vocals of Rick Jones, presenter of the show and creator of all the weird finger puppets used in the program! Some of the tunes are instrumental, and are great on their own – but most feature vocals from Jones – who was later found to be smoking a heck of a lot of dope while making kid shows for British television. Titles include "Plasticine", "Gulliver's Theme", "Seeds", "Drawing On Stones", "Fingermouse Plays The Organ", "Fingerbobs Theme", "Story Of The Wooden Tower", and "Shapes". CD

Ahhhh . . . What a number! "I'm Your Puppet" has a punchy sample groove that's years ahead of its time – mixing together tight drums, sweet organ, and these weird little bells that are a perfect fit to complement the rough vocals of the Purify Brothers! "So Many Reasons" is not as sublime, but also not a bad little southern soul number either! 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Bob Crewe/The GlitterhouseBarbarella ... LP
Dyno Voice, 1968. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
One of the most insanely wonderful soundtracks from the late 60s – filled with weird instrumental touches and sublimely groovy vocals that really match the mad spirit of the film! Although Bob Crewe's best known for his work as a producer for bigger names in the 60s, he really shines here on this set – stepping out with a mad mix of styles that blends 60s adult easy with spacier themes – using primitive electronics and odd studio tricks to capture the cartoony space landscape of Jane Fonda's world in the move. The Glitterhouse sing on a few cuts, in a great mod rock soundtrack mode – and the pacing, timing, and overall presentation of the music here is really great – an audio document that almost feels like a "sonic film" in and of itself! Tracks include "Barbarella", "Ski Ride", "Hungry Dolls", "Entrance Into Sogo", "The Pill", "Smoke (Viper Vapor)", "I Love All The Love In You", "The Labyrinth", "The Sex Machine", "The Chamber Of Dreams" and many more. ✨✧ Bob DylanAnother Self Portrait 1969 to 1971 – Bootleg Series Vol 10 (3LP + 2CD Box Set) ... LP
Columbia, Late 1960s/Early 1970s. Near Mint- 3LP + 2CD Box Set ... Out Of Stock
The 10th in Columbia's essential Bootleg Series of archival unreleased Dylan – and for us, this one gets immediate placement among the best in the series – for finding the diamonds in the rough from the turbulent 1969-1971 period! It features a bunch of previously unreleased versions of songs from Self Portrait and New Morning – along with a handful of live recordings and otherwise unreleased gems. It's fascinating stuff, especially the songs from Self Portrait! That album is such a weird hodgepodge of styles, it was rejected by even the most ardent Dylan worshippers at the time. Here in blueprint versions, the songs have a ragged charm that really comes through in a big way! The set also has a bunch of alternate versions of songs from New Morning, a couple from Nashville Skyline and other odds and ends. It's bookended by incredible demos – opening with an acoustic guitar backed "I Went To See The Gypsy" and closing with a piano version of the eternally great "When I Paint My Masterpiece" – and it's filled with underappreciated Self Portrait songs like "Little Sadie", "All The Tired Horses", "Wigwam" and more in sparer settings, sans the overdubs of the LP version. Also includes alternate versions of New Morning material, including "Time Passes Slowly #1", "Working On A Guru", "If Dogs Run Free" and "New Morning" – some WITH orchestral or horn overdubs, as opposed to the stripped down Self Portrait versions. Other rarities from '69-'71 include a different version of "Country Pie", plus "I'll Be Your Baby Tonight" and "Highway 61 Revisited" with The Band at Isle Of Wight. 35 tracks in all – including a thick, beautifully illustrated booklet – with notes by one-time Self Portrait hater Greil Marcus! LP, Vinyl record album
(NOTE – This set comes without the CDs. Box has some shelf wear.)

✨✧ Jerry Butler/Exuma/Bobby ScottJoe – Original Soundtrack ... LP
Mercury, 1970. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Very weird soundtrack to this spooky 70s film starring Peter Boyle! Bobby Scott did the score, and it's hipper than most of his other stuff – with a mixture of jazz, groovy, and straight orchestral scoring. Jerry Butler sings vocals on the tracks "Where Are You Going?" and "You Can Fly", which is a killer 11 minute workout with hard soulful drums, a tight driving groove, and lots of funky changes! Exuma sings on the cut "You Don't Know What's Going On", and other tunes include "Compton's Hangout", "The Expiration Of Frank", and "Send The Hippies To Hell". LP, Vinyl record album

Columbia, 1960s/1970s/1980s. Used 3 CDs ... Out Of Stock
The first entry in the Bob Dylan series from Columbia – and maybe still one of the most important – as it really focused on the kind of special material that had been changing hands in the underground for decades – part of that secret knowledge that would always make diehard Dylan fans sneer at anyone who only knew the official albums! There's some really amazing stuff here – especially great album outtakes, especially from classics like Freewheelin Bob Dylan and The Times They Are A Changin – plus some unusual 70s moments, weird early demo and live tracks, and lots more. Despite the large date rate, the set skews pretty heavily towards the mid 60s – which represents probably 50% of the material, alongside a good chunk of 70s tracks, and a few scattered 80s and 90s moments. Titles include "House Carpenter", "Hard Times In New York Town", "Mama You Been On My Mind", "Sitting On A Barbed Wire Fence", "Wallflower", "Santa Fe", "Who Killed Davey Moore (Live)", "Paths Of Victory", "Talkin Hava Negeilah Blues", "Let Me Die In My Footsteps", "Man On The Street", "Suze (The Cough Song)", "Seven Curses", "every Grain Of Salnd", "Catfish", "Tell Me", "Series Of Dreams", and lots lots more. Four SeasonsAin't That A Shame/Live On Stage (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Vee Jay/Ace (UK), 1963. New Copy ... $5.99 14.99
Two fantastic albums from the Four Seasons – plus bonus tracks too! First up is Ain't That A Shame – pure genius from the Four Seasons – heard here very early in their career, but already sparkling with all the fantastic things that would make them so unique! The Bob Crewe production is brilliant, the Charlie Callelo arrangements are filled with all sorts of weird twists and turns, and the amazing vocal lead of Frankie Valli is mindblowing – all nose and grit, in a way that really sets the group apart from so many other quartets of the time! Titles include "Candy Girl", "Long Lonely Nights", "Honey Love", "Stay", and "Ain't That A Shame" – plus great original material for the group – including "Soon", "Dumb Drum", "New Mexican Rose", "That's The Only Way", and "Melancholy". Live On Stage follows the wide range of material on the first album, by featuring the group in a fantastic blend of jazz, pop, and standard numbers – all recorded live, with a harmony sound that's almost earthier than some of their studio albums! The audience is very upfront in the mix, and very enthusiastic – and Frankie and the group sound especially nice on some of the straighter numbers, singing in a way that's almost like the harmony of the Four Freshmen. Titles include "Brotherhood Of Man", "Come Si Bella", "Mack The Knife", "We Three", "Day In Day Out", "My Mother's Eyes", "Little Boy", and "Blues In The Night". Bonus tracks include "Silver Wings" and "Starmaker". CD

Fania, 1978. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Massive work – one of Charlie's best albums of the 70s! The album's a straight salsa set, but it's done with a truly pummeling level of energy that kicks in from the first note – really blasting in with some strong statements by the band, then letting loose on longer tracks than usual, all of which have Charlie's jazzy touch firmly in place! Arrangements are all wonderful – done by Charlie, Roy Roman, and Bobby Valentin – and vocals are by Menique and Julito Villot. Includes the instrumental track "Melodica In F" – which features Charlie playing some very weird melodica – plus "Arroz Con Bacalao", "Tiene Sabor", "Consuelate", and "No Puedo Mas". ✨✧ Reign GhostReign Ghost Featuring Lynda Squires ... LP
Paragon (Canada), 1970. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A set that's a bit more tuneful and well-written than the first album by Reign Ghost – but a record that still has all the raw power and spooky feel of that debut! As before, the vocals are by male singer Bob Bryden and female singer Lynda Squires – who each take the lead at times, along with another male member of the band – but who often seem to occupy a different space, both lyrically and spiritually. This contrast gives the record a very weird sort of energy – like Grace Slick trying to break away from Jefferson Airplane, or those weird Velvet Underground moments when Lou Reed and John Cale sing in contrast. Titles include "Pudsy's Parable", "Mother's Got Troubles", "Long Day Journey", "Enola Gay", "Solar Nice", and "Breast Stroke Blues". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Sly & The Family StoneAin't But the One Way ... LP
Warner, 1982. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
The last major album from Sly Stone – and a great little set that's still very much at the top of his funky soul game! The groove's a bit different than early Family Stone years, but still has a collaborative funky feel that's so much stronger than some of the stiffer efforts on the market at the time – proof that doing things with the right sort of live and lively energy still beats a whole roomful of drum machines and keyboards! Stone's got a way of providing these slinky inflections on his lyrics – sexing up the grooves even more than the instrumentation – and backing from straighter soul singers hole things in place with an old school vibe. Bobby Lyle plays a bit of keyboards on the set – and titles include "Who In the Funk Do You Think You Are", "Sylvester", "We Can Do It", "LOVINU", "One Way", and "High Y'All" – plus one of weirder covers of the Kinks' "You Really Got Me" you're ever likely to hear! ✨✧ Wadada Leo SmithProcession Of The Great Ancestry ... CD
Nessa, 1983. Used ... Out Of Stock
An overlooked gem from trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith – an early 80s session, but one that we'd rank with some of his most-together work ever! The album's a mixture of spare modes and some surprising group elements – a set that often has Smith blowing beautifully on trumpet or flugelhorn, alongside the vibes of Bobby Naughton and percussion of Kahil El Zabar – the latter of whom makes a strong, spiritual appearance here – really helping to shade in some strong sounds to Leo's music. Naughton's vibes are great too – very angular and chromatic, with the sharpness of Bobby Hutcherson's avant work of the mid 60s – and one track features John Powell on tenor, and two more have Louis Myers on guitar – bringing in these weird harmelodic bluesy tones which then accompany vocals from Smith! Titles include "Nuru Light", "The Flower That Seeds The Earth", "Jah Jah Is The Perfect Love", "Procession Of The Great Ancestry", and "Third World Grainery Of Pure Earth". CD

Bernard Purdie (Pretty Purdie)Soul Drums (expanded edition) ... CD
Date/Greenstreets, 1967. New Copy ... $12.99 14.98
Massive work from one of the funkiest drummers of all time – the legendary Bernard Pretty Purdie, stepping out here in a batch of instrumentals that may well be his greatest album ever! Bernard's drums are right up front in the mix – leading off all tunes with a full, funky, echoey sort of approach that's unlike anything else we can think of – and certainly different from any other late 60s albums of this type! The production is totally great – and has a way of pulling out some of the weirdest aspects of the music – which itself features guitar from Billy Butler and Eric Gale, bass from Bob Bushnell, tenor and flute from Seldon Powell, and organ and piano from Richard Tee – who also handled all the arrangements on the set! The centerpiece is the hit single "Funky Donkey", but just about every track's a groover in its own way – and titles include "Soul Drums", "Bill's Groove", "Jimmy's Back", "Testifyin", "Modern Jive", "Blow Your Lid", "Bee N Tee", and "Soul Bossa Nova". This new edition includes 8 bonus tracks, with a couple rare 45 tracks and more that have never been released – all soulful & funky – well paired with the Soul Drums album! Bonus tracks are in stereo, and include "Alexander's Rag Time Band", "Genuine John", "Soul Clappin", "If You Never Cried", "Stop" and "Time Is Tight". Also comes with a nice booklet with new liner notes, and choice quotes from Purdie's peers and those he influenced, from Galt MacDermot to Large Professor. CD

Scott SeskindScott Seskind ... LP
Scott Seskind, 1985. Sealed ... $19.99
A really weird, really moody sort of record – one that was issued in the mid 80s, but by a guy who seems to think that he's still working in the singer/songwriter generation of the late 70s! For Scott Seskind, punk and new wave never happened – as the songs here are personal, heartfelt, and delivered with this darkly-presented folk style – not the sunny optimism of the early 60s, but more that smoky haze from the second half of the decade – infused with the realization that the revolution wasn't gonna happen, with more focus on personal issues. There's some great moody echo in the production, which really helps set the tone – and titles include "War", "Empty Arms", "Unknown & Disliked", "Bobby Sands", "You're The Reason", "This Is My Country", "Out Of The Blue", "Our Ring", and "Been Waitin". Righteous (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 20.99
We're always happy to take a trip to Crampsville – as the journey means that we not only get to live within the world of Lux Interior and Poison Ivy, we also get to discover a huge amount of obscure singles from the glory days of the indie 45! The Cramps built their music on building blocks like these – weird, obscure tunes from the late 50s and early 60s – often leaping across genres in a single tune – mixing rock and R&B, slinky lounge with gritty sleaze, and always exploding with the kind of energy that never could have lasted past the few minutes of music that fit on a 7" record. The set's very much in the great mode of other Righteous Cramps-inspired titles – and features 52 tracks that include "Love Slave" by Bart Mattson, "She'll Never Let Him Go" by Gin Gillette, "Little Joe" by Jack Day, "I'm Blue" by The Ikettes, "Chicken Rock" by Scott Wood & His Band, "Big Foot" by Googie Rene, "The Tingle" by Jackie Weaver, "She's Mine" by Johnny Strickland, "I Got School" by Scott Miller, "Stop At The Hop" by Don Eee, "Rock & Roll Fever" by Gene Ray, "The Gorilla Walk" by Sascha Burland, "The Cat" by Rod Willis, "Watch Your Step" by Bobby Parker, and "I'm Buggin Out Little Baby" by Donny Lee Moore. Righteous (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 20.99
Oh for the glory days of the 7" single – that magical late 50s/early 60s time when it seemed like there was an endless supply of weird and wonderful records all the time – and at prices that allowed them to circulate easily, even if they weren't big hits! (And why are 7" singles so expensive these days?) The package is a fantastic testament to that wonderful musical moment – when you might stumble across a backroom jukebox, stuffed with overlooked gems – just waiting for you to discover them, and get them blasting out of the bassy speaker with the drop of your dime. Few folks know this generation better than Lux and Ivy of The Cramps – a pair who were record collectors before they even made a single of their own – and the set features a stunning 50 rare nuggets – with titles that include "The Mash" by Bud Spudd & The Sprouts, "No Time" by The Titans, "Purr Kitty Purr" by Sid King & The Five Strings, "Time Machine" by The Gamblers, "Little Bitty Girl" by The Memories, "The Little Martian" by Jan Amber, "The Last Meal" by Hurricane Harry, "Hello Schoolteacher" by The 4 After 5s, "Peach Fuzz" by Bob Taylor, "Zindy Lou" by The Mariners, "My Memories Of You" by Yolanda & The Natural, "Wolf Call" by Mark Anthony, "Nameless" by Bob Strauss, "Heartbeat" by The Threeteens, "I Dreamed I Was Elvis" by Sonny Cole & The Rhythm Roamers, "Mental Cruelty" by Larry & Dixie Davis, and "Bodacious" by The US Rockets. The offbeat look of the guy on the cover is very fitting for the offbeat sound of this set – a really cool collection of rare and unusual singles that fall between the cracks of more familiar styles from the time – tunes that are very far from the charts and pop hits of the late 50s/early 60s! The mix of styles referenced in the title is just the tip of the iceberg, as these are really weird and wonderful records from the glory days of the indie 45 – pulled together by Ace Records with excellent sound and a heck of a lot of care – detailed notes on all the material, at a level that shows that this isn't just a random assortment of records, and instead a well-compiled collection that's overflowing with sounds from a stack of 7" singles, served up in a way that reminds us that a CD compilation is maybe still the best way to enjoy music like this! A great little collection done in the best "mondo" mode – which means that it brings together weird, raw tracks from the early years of rock and soul – and mixes them with some great spoken snippets from B-Movie films of the time! The approach is a bit of a variation on the other Cramps Jukebox titles from this label – still a similar great blend of weird, offbeat, and unusual tracks from the glory days of the 45rpm underground – but also put together in a way that gives them a slight cinematic bent, and also ties them to lurid images on the screen. Titles include "Motorcycle Millie" by Garrett Williams, "You Been Torturing Me" by Four Young Men, "Trouble" by Jackie Dee, "If You Can't Rock Me" by Debbie Stevens, "She's A Going Jessie" by Andy Starr, "I Thought I Told You About Them" by Marie Knight, "Nag" by The Halos, "Killer" by Sparkle Moore, "Don't Be Mad" by Don Feger, "Don't Bug Me Baby" by Milton Allen, "Scorpion" by The Carnations, "I'm Gonna Tell On You" by George Fleming, and "Enough Man" by Bobby Christian. The Beasties' peak-era, retro-style instrumentals LP! Even at their weakest vocal moments, we've always dug the Beastie Boys' firm commitment to funky instrumental backing – their albums are filled with lots of nice interludes, instrumentals, and backing grooves – but they often seemed to get buried amidst all the bugged out vocals. The record kind of has the vibe of a lost jazz organ session, with lots of weird twists and turns thrown in, and all the better thanks to Money Mark, pretty much a 4th Beastie here! A cool bit of instrumental funk with a very classic production feel. Every track's a winner, and the titles include "Ricky's Theme", "Groove Holmes", "Sabrosa", "In 3's", "Transitions", "Bobo On the Corner", and "Shambala". CD

A surprisingly great batch of kick ass rock and roll tunes – southern fried, but done with a cosmic undercurrent that makes for a mighty weird approach! Bobby Caldwell is in the group on percussion, piano, vibes, and bells – and he also co-wrote most of the songs on the album – and titles include the classic "Dancing Madly Backwards", plus "Myopic Void", "Frozen Over", "Thousand Days Of Yesterdays", "As The Moon Speaks", and "Astral Lady". One of the weird LPs that French Horn player John Graas made in the 50's, featuring that cumbersome instrument in a set of surprisingly light and loose jazz tracks. Graas' playing on the French Horn is a bit like Gerry Mulligan's on the baritone – that is, he takes these turns and twists that surprise you, given the nature of the horn. He's joined here by Art Pepper, Conte Candoli, Bob Cooper, and Paul Moer, and the set's a nice batch of West Coast chamber type stuff. An amazing set by Lee Morgan – and one that was recorded in the 60s, but not issued until many years later! The album has this really weird sound, which is a combination of Morgan's trumpet, Wayne Shorter's tenor, Herbie Hancock's piano, and Bobby Hutcherson's vibes – the last of which gives the record a uniquely angular quality, and a stark modernist sound that's different from other Lee Morgan albums. This odd sound is possibly one reason why Blue Note didn't release the album at the time – and it's also a quality that makes the finally-issued record a real treasure – an even more wonderful chapter in the great later years of Morgan's all-too-short jazz career! The title track "The Procrastinator" is amazing – and other titles include "Soft Touch", "Dear Sir", "Stopstart", and "Rio". CD

The second set features a sextet with Julian Priester, George Coleman, Harold Mabern, and Walter Booker – on tracks that are equally great, and entitled "Free Flow", "Mr Johnson", "The Stroker", "Uncle Rough", and "Untitled Boogaloo". Beverly Hills/Real Gone, Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A wild and weird early soundtrack work from the great Melvin Van Peebles – a set of songs composed by the man himself, and put together for an early directorial effort about a white man who wakes up one morning and finds himself black – and has to discover the real version of society from an African-American perspective! The music and politics are very similar to Melvin's early albums for A&M – songs that borrow from a few different styles, and aren't just straight soul and funk – handled with some larger arrangements from Bob Matthews, who amplifies some of the wildness in the tunes! Tracks include "Love, That's America", "Great Guy", "Eviction Scene", and "Where Are The Children". LP, Vinyl record album

Grapefruit (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. Used 3CD ... Out Of Stock
British folk music got really weird and wonderful at the end of the 60s – light years from the crew cut versions of The Kingston Trio, or the twangy modes of Bob Dylan wannabees – but also very different from the more rockish directions that American folk acts were taking at the time! If anything, the British artists showed an even deeper commitment to acoustic modes – and far more ancient ones than American groups had access too – a thousand year legacy of British Isles music, but reworked into an often-trippy style would find more famous iterations in groups from Fairport Convention through Current 93, and even in the Wicker Man soundtrack as well! Most of the music here is much more obscure than those references – groups that were big in the UK, but maybe didn't have as much of an impact over here during the period – which makes this 63 track box set a real treasure trove of discovery – filled with many tunes we'd never heard before, and put together in a very special way. Titles include "Black Girl" by Mary Anne, "Till The Morning Comes" by Dando Shaft, "Roses For Columbus" by Mark Frhy, "Love Is A Funny Thing" by Spyrogyra, "Come All You Travellers" by Wight, "Willow's Song" by Nagnet, "Cruious Crystals Of Unusual Purity" by Bridget St John, "Prisoners Victims Strangers Friends" by Paper Bubble, "Gabilan" by Duncan Browne, "Meeting By The Moonlight Mill" by Dry Heart, "Silence Returns" by Beau, "Me & My Kite" by Fuschia, "The Colour Is Blue" by Country Sun, "Welcome To The Citadel" by Marc Brierley, "Garden Song (demo)" by Bill Fay, and "Upon Reflection" by Heron. A&R, 1971. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Wild stuff! John Blair was a soul singer and violinist with a weird approach that mixed soul, pop, and a little bit of rock into a sweet electric vibe with that kind of unique sound that people used to overlook because they never knew where to slot it – but which is getting a lot more recognition these days, thanks to open-minded groovers. Bob James did the arrangements for this strange album, and the best moments are baroque soul tracks with a sweet slow mellow groove. Includes a nice version of "I'll Never Fall In Love Again", a medley of "Golden Slumbers/Ooh Child", and the groovy original "Hey Root People", with a nice bubbling keyboard on the intro. A surprisingly great batch of kick ass rock and roll tunes – southern fried, but done with a cosmic undercurrent that makes for a mighty weird approach! The drums are amazing – fierce right from the get-go, in a way that has made the record a favorite with break collectors for years – and the fuzzy guitars really step out strongly too – with just a slight southern twang, and a great edge that keeps things pretty funky at parts! ✨✧ Buddy MontgomeryTwo-Sided Album ... LP
Milestone, 1968. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A weird little record by Buddy Montgomery – the vibes-playing member of the Montgomery family that also included Monk and Wes. The "2 sided" concept here means that side one features Montgomery in a quintet with Harold Mabern on piano, Montego Joe on congas, and Joe Farrell on tenor, and side two features a smaller group, a trio with Buddy, Monk, and Billy Hart, working through mellow versions of tunes from Camelot. This mixed approach was used often on Milestone sets of this vintage – like work by Bobby Timmons and Phil Upchurch – and as on some of those records, the clash of styles makes for interesting work, a bit loose at times, but a nice break from the more standard Prestige/Blue Note style. Titles include "Personage – Wes", "Samba", "Probin", and "Blues For David". LP, Vinyl record album

CD

A weird and wild little record – and one that came as quite a surprise to folks who'd previously known Link Wray as the king of the raunchy guitar instrumental in the 60s! Here, Link sings as well as plays – working in his legendary Three Track Shack, which was located in Maryland, but has a vibe that feels like it came right out of the Louisiana swamps! The style of the music follows suit – almost as if Link saw folks like Tony Joe White, Bobby Charles, and some of their contemporaries – and tried to find his unique take on the raunchy blend of roots rock, country, and maybe some occasional funky currents. Polydor cleaned the album up a bit for release – but no too much – and titles include "Juke Box Mama", "Rise & Fall Of Jimmy Stokes", "La De Da", "Black River Swamp", "Tail Dragger", "Ice People", and "Fire & Brimstone". A really weird little album from Hollywood hipster Bobby Jameson – and a record that's probably best-remembered for its production by the legendary Curt Boettcher! The songs are all originals by Bobby, and they run in a range of styles that go far past the usual Sunshine pop of Boettcher's other productions of the time – often showing traces of the creeping psychedelia of the LA scene, with some especially trippy moments early on, which are counterbalanced by some sweeter, softer pop as the album progresses. Jameson's vocals aren't always on the money, but he really has a way of hitting the spirit of each tune nicely – on titles that include "Know Yourself", "Windows & Doors", "Right By My Side", "Who's Putting Who On", "The New Age", "Jenny", "Do You Believe In Yesterday", "Candy Colored Dragon", and "Places Times & The People". Grapefruit (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 4CD ... Out Of Stock
A huge run of music from this legendary psychedelic band – all served up here in a single set! First up is their Part 1 album – the initial uttering from the West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band – a group with a heady sound that definitely lives up to their name! There's less "pop art" going on here than just trippy psych – served up at a level that makes the group one of the best bigger label examples of the style at the time – and definitely a lot more edgey than some of their labelmates on Warner. Jimmy Bowen produced, but really keeps all the edges intact – and titles include the completely insane "Help I'm A Rock" (actually about a rock calling for help!) – plus "Shifting Sands", "1906", "Transparent Day", "Here's Where You Belong", and "If You Want This Love". Next is Volume 2 – the amazing second album from this ultra-cool group – a set that's even weirder and wilder than their debut! The trio are maybe one of the few who really live up to the farthest expectations of the psych generation – as they're really open to let their minds fly in their choice of lyrics, instrumentation, and overall presentation of the record – which hardly seems the sort to yield any sort of singles at all, even though a few of the tunes are downright catchy! Instead, the whole thing's put forth as a dark statement on late 60s society – with a sound that's as heavy as the subject matter, and not afraid to really pus all the freak and fuzz as far as it can go! Quite surprising, even for the Reprise label – and tracks include "Queen Nymphet", "Tracy Had a Hard Day Sunday", "In the Arena", "Smell of Incense", "Suppose They Gave A War & No One Comes", "Overture Wcpaeb (part 2)", and "Carte Blanche" – which supposedly they were given in recording the album! Next is Child's Guide To Good & Evil, the third album in the continuing genius of the West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band – a group who are certainly as experimental as their name would imply, but who can also come across with some warmer Sunshine Pop touches too! And it's that which makes the group so wonderful – the blend of freak and sweet, of fuzz and fun – all given a special shape in the studio through the genius of producer Jimmy Bowen, whose work here with Bob Markley is superb – and very much open to the best freedoms that Warner was offering its creative talents at the time! The song titles are equally superb – and titles include "A Child's Guide To Good & Evil", "Ritual #1", "Anniversary of World War III", "Eighteen Is Over The Hill", "As Kind As Summer", and "Our Drummer Always Plays In the Nude". CD 4 features 18 more bonus tracks – rare takes and alternate mixes of titles that include "Watch Yourself", "Ritual #1", "As Kind As Summer", "Eighteen Is Over The Hill", and "Until The Poorest People Have Money To Spend" – plus other tracks too. And all the other three albums are presented in both mono and stereo mixes – which makes for 84 tracks in the full set! CD
