Titles include "I'm On The Lamb But I Ain't No Sheep", "Stairway To The Stars", "Cities On Flame With Rock & Roll", "Redeemed", "Before The Kiss A Redcap", and "Screams". LP, Vinyl record album
That's an image of Sun Ra & The Arkestra in Istanbul in 1990 on the front – and the issue features lots more photographs from that visit, plus the story of a very unique street performance they gave in the city! There's lots more too – a nicely varied set of features that really continues the groundbreaking spirit of Maggot Brain – photographs of New York musicians in the 80s, Blue Gene Tyranny and Peter Gordon interviewed by Ned Sublette, the collaboration between Pharoah Sanders and Floating Points, the hidden lyrics of BlueOysterCult, the top 20 Fall Songs by Plastic Crimewave, excerpts from a memoir by Young Marble Giant Stuart Moxham, a tribute to Crawdaddy by Luc Sante – and lots lots more! This is perhaps THE masterpiece of indie/alterna-/punk/whatever from the 80s. 2 LPs worth of jazzy existential punk from guys who weren't afraid to admit that they liked Steely Dan, Van Halen, BlueOysterCult, or CCR. This record has affected many a life. CD
A treasure trove of unreleased material from the Stalk Forrest Group – one full album, other bonus tracks, and their only ever single – all compiled together in a sweet set that documents the pre-history of BlueOysterCult! These guys aren't as sinister as in their BOC years, but definitely have a great way with a guitar line – spinning things out in a sweet, compressed mode that really brings a tightness to the tunes – yet still respects some of the rootsier undercurrents. Vocals have a bit more twang than later, but in a catchy late 60s way – and the original songs on the album – mostly by Richard Meltzer and Allen Lanier – are all pretty great. Titles include "What Is Quicksand", "Gil Blanco County", "Donovan's Monkey", "Ragamuffin Dumplin", "St Cecilia", "Arthur Comics", and "Curse Of The Hidden Mirrors" – plus some demo and original versions too, some from the time the group was named Oxaca.
