Ginger Baker's Air ForceGinger Baker's Air Force 2 (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Atco/Big Pink (South Korea), 1970. New Copy Gatefold ... $18.99 22.99
Fantastic solo work from Ginger Baker – a musician who only seemed to get better and better the farther he moved away from Cream and Blind Faith! A set like this really gives Ginger a chance to open up and explore all the many musical currents that were grabbing his interests – served up here in a mix of jazz, funk, rock, and soul delivered by a lineup who are every bit as stunning as the music on the album! In addition to plenty of work from Baker on drums, the set features jazz contributions from the excellent Harold McNair and Chris Wood, who both play saxes and flute – plus drums from the legendary Phil Seamen – as well as a heck of a lot more sax and organ from Graham Bond, plus bass from Ric Grech, guitar and vocals from Denny Laine, organ and vocals from Steve Winwood, percussion from Neemoi Acquaye, and lots more contributions from a lineup that's almost too big to mention. The results are wonderful – and titles include "Toady", "Let Me Ride", "We Free Kings", "12 Gates Of The City", "Do U No Hu Yor Phrenz R", and "Sweet Wine". CD

FamilySong For Me (2CD edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Reprise/Esoteric (UK), 1970. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 24.99
An amazing shift for Family – the group's first album after Rick Grech left for Blind Faith – and a set that has the group really reinventing their sound! The vocals of Roger Chapman are maybe even more dynamic and upfront than ever before – really finding that special sort of spirit that made him one of the most unique talents on the British scene of the time – but maybe the most unusual aspect of the record is the presence of new group member Poli Palmer – who brings in all these cool new sounds on keyboards, flute, and vibes! Those elements create a richness in the sound that wasn't there before – one that seems to give the vocals of Chapman even more focus than usual – on titles that include "Drowned In Wine", "Some Poor Soul", "Love Is A Sleeper", "The Cat & The Rat", "A Song For Me", "Wheels", "Stop For The Traffic Through The Heart Of Me", "Hey Let It Rock", and "93's OK J". This massive 2CD set features all sorts of bonus material – the single-only cuts "No Mule's Fool", "Good Friend Of Mine", "Today", and "Song For Lots" – plus a Roger Chapman interview, all sorts of other BBC recordings of the tracks – and even an unreleased promotional edit of "Today". Gilberto GilCopacabana Mon Amour – Trilha Sonora Original ... CD
Polygram (Brazil), 1970. Used ... $6.99 9.99
An incredible bit of soundtrack work by Gilberto Gil – and one of his best albums! The record was originally recorded to accompany the work of director Rogerio Szanzerla, and it's a wonderful mix of samba, jazz, and post-Tropicalia psychedelia – all recorded in a warm intimate style that's similar to Gil's legendary London recording from 1971! The tracks are some of the most pioneering that Gil ever recorded – and they break free of the time and space constraints of some of his studio albums, stretching songs out into long open-ended explorations, 4 of which are over seven minutes long. Gil's vocals are extremely soulful, and his guitar playing is free and jazzy, often interspersed with some nice funky flute and percussion work. Titles include "Diga A Ela", "Mr. Sganzeria", "Blind Faith", "Yeh Yeh Yah Yah", and "Tomorrow Vai Ser Bacana". CD

VariousStranger I May Be – Savoy Gospel 1954 to 1966 ... LP
Savoy/Honest Jons (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $29.99 32.99
An insanely fantastic look at the strong legacy of gospel music from Savoy Records – a company who were initially a powerhouse in the fields of jazz and R&B, but who moved into the gospel world and dominated that market for decades! Savoy is a bit like Chess Records – a company who really learned how to record blues singers and soulful styles from the secular world, then used that same ability to work some real magic on songs from the more spiritual side of the spectrum – an approach that really made for top-shelf music, even as the decades moved on! Savoy's gospel legacy has always been a bit underground – not nearly as reissued for larger audiences as their jazz and blues material – but this collection does a great job of correcting that lack, by presenting their music in a wonderful format – all in a mix of rare cuts and classics from the gospel underground. This first volume focuses on work from the earliest years of Savoy's gospel productions – and features 24 tracks by The Davis Sisters, Gospel Chimes, Jimmy Scott, Roberta Martin Singers, Swindell Brothers, Christones, Gospel Harmonettes Specials, Harmonizing Five, Famous Ward Singers, Blind Boys Of Alabama, Stars Of Faith, Gospel Cavaliers, and even the Staple Singers! Tim Trevor Briscoe/Szilard Mezei/Nicola GuazzalocaBefore Then (4CD set) ... CD
Not Two (Poland), 2022. New Copy 4CD ... $44.99 49.99
Wonderfully careful, precise improvisation from a trio that we're not sure we've ever heard before – but who are already overflowing with so many new ideas, they certainly warrant all the extra space given to them on this 4CD set! The package brings together live material from four different performances – each of them a unique combination of musical elements from Tim Trevor Briscoe on clarinet and alto, Szilard Mezei on viola, and Nicola Guazzaloca on piano – balanced with unusual qualities throughout, but always tied together in a really special way! Given the use of clarinet, there's maybe a slight inspiration here from the best experiments of Jimmy Giuffre – but the overall sound is completely different, even between individual concert recordings. Tracks are all quite long, and titles include "Circle", "Exhalation", "By The River", "Without", "Mooring", "Guests", "Black Blinds", "So Close", and "Faith". CD
