✨✧ VariousA Capella Black Gospel 1940 to 1969 – Look How The World Has Made A Change (3CD set) ... CD
Narroway (Sweden), 1940s/1950s/1960s. New Copy 3CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An amazing legacy in gospel music – three decades' worth of tracks that feature just harmony vocals, no instrumentation at all – in a rich summation of all that the style brought to American music in mid century! Sure, there were some strong harmonies in 60s soul, 50s pop, and later rock – but these are the sorts of cuts that show where so many of those artists got their ideas and inspiration – music that bridges the early years of vocal groups on 78rpm singles, working here with more modern arrangements, and recording quality that really brings out the best in the voices! Many of the artists here are male groups – strong precursors to later doo wop and soul – and as with other Narroway titles, the selection of cuts is wonderful, with a huge amount of material from rare singles. 84 tracks in all – work by Flying Clouds Of Detroit, Famous Blue Jay Singers, Ever Ready Singers, Charming Bells, Silvertone Jubilee Singers, Silver Leaf Quartet Of Florida, Seven Star Juniors, Reliable Jubilee Singers, National Clouds Of Joy, Wings Over Jordan Choir, Traveling Four, Southern Echoes, and many others. Black Rock & RonStop The World ... CD
RCA/Get On Down, 1989. New Copy ... $6.99 14.98
The rare, late 80s gem from Black Rock & Ron – dedicated to and featuring production by the late, great Paul C McKasty – along with some production by Jazzy Jay and Skeff Anselm. You can hear Paul C's influence in the edits, the tightness of the beats and the layering and chopping of the samples, which definitely pushes this set to higher level. The rhymes are impressive, too – especially in the heavier, rawer and harder hitting tracks. Solid duo rap and tight production from the Hollis, Queens crew. Titles include 'You Can't Do Me None", "Black Is The Word", "That's How I'm Livin'", "Getting Large", "I'm Tired", "3 Brothers And Yvonne", "Rap Life", "Act Like You Know" and "Black, Rock & Ron (video mix)". 15 tracks in all. Pye/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), Late 60s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A mad assortment of 60s girl pop from the UK – one that features a huge amount of material pulled from the vaults of Pye Records! If you've always thought that Petula Clark and Sandie Shaw were all that was going on in the UK pop scene at the time, you'll really be blown away by the scope of material in this collection – as the package features a total of 32 tunes in all, most of which are by artists that were barely ever known on this side of the Atlantic! The song selection is great – and nearly all of it is in that high-stepping, tightly punctuated mode that we first came to love in the tunes of Petula Clark, but which are really beginning to discover in a huge amount of other singers! Features work by Simone Jackson, Glo Macari, Shirley Abicair, Tammy St John, Helen Shapiro, Sharon Tandy, Sandra Barry, The Ferris Wheel, Mally Page, Tawney Reed, Billie Davis, and many others. ✨✧ Black Note43rd & Degnan ... CD
World Stage, 1991. Used ... Just Sold Out!
One of our favorite jazz debuts of the 90s – a bold statement from the LA underground, and a record that's filled with the soul and creative spirit of a classic Blue Note from the 60s! The group's lineup changed a bit in later years, but on this first outing players are a tight combo that includes James Mahone on alto sax, Richard Grant on trumpet, Ark Sano on piano, Mark Shelby on bass, and Willie Jones III on drums – grooving together in a way that has a great deal of modern touches in the head arrangements, but which breaks out in relaxed, open solos that mark each of the young players as tremendously creative individuals. The trumpet/alto lines are especially nice – almost recalling the sound of some of Jackie McLean's pre-new thing albums of the early 60s – but the original compositions of the album also carry a great deal of the power of the set as well! Titles include "43rd & Degnan", "Lanorris", "Millissa", "New Day", "4th Grade", "Cloud Nine", and "To Be Announced". CD

Really groundbreaking work from the World Sax Quartet – one of the first, and best, all-horn ensembles! The strength of the album definitely hangs on the backgrounds of the players – Julius Hemphill, Hamiet Bluiett, Oliver Lake, and David Murray – all already key reedmen in left field jazz, with a sense of sound and identity that makes each part of the group as strong as its whole – a great trading of musical minds, spirits, and sounds. Instrumentation includes alto, tenor, baritone, clarinet, soprano sax, and bass clarinet – and titles include "Sundance", "Pillars Latino", "Suite Music", "Sound Light", "Connections", and "Fast Life". Max RomeoRevelation Time ... LP
Black World/17 North Parade, 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
A really classic set from the great Max Romeo – a record that oozes with the soulful vocals he first forged back in the 60s, and sparks with some of the more righteous themes of his rasta roots work of the 70s! The production is perfect – laidback, unassuming, and very much a showcase for Max's role in the lead – singing over rhythms that seem as dictated by his charisma upfront, as they are part of the bedrock of the album! Although carved out in a 70s roots mode, most of the songs have themes that are still pretty darn meaningful all these many years later – with titles that include "Warning Warning", "A Quarter Pound Of I'cense", "Three Blind Mice", "Blood Of The Prophet (parts 1 & 2)", "Open The Iron Gate (parts 1 & 2)", and "Revelation Time". ✨✧ Black SabbathTechnical Ecstasy ... CD
Warner/Essential (UK), 1976. Used ... $6.99
The cover here looks a bit slicker than some of the other Black Sabbath albums of the 70s – but the sound is anything but, and still flies the flag of all the greatness the group had to offer! The set was recorded at the famous Criteria Studios in Miami – home to some great soul sessions in the early part of the decade – and Tommy Iommi gives the band a sharp edge in the studio, bringing the guitars up and Ozzy's vocals into a nice sort of focus – reminding the world that Sabbath can still kick the ass of newcomers like AC/DC when needed. And like late 70s material by Led Zeppelin, which some purists of the time tend to dismiss – from the backward perspective of 40 years, the album sounds pretty darn great to our ears! Titles include "She's Gone", "Dirty Women", "It's Alright", "Gypsy", "Back Street Kids", "You Won't Change Me", and "All Moving Parts". CD

Charles BradleyBlack Velvet (limited edition box set with bonus EP, slipmat & book) ... LP
Dunham/Daptone, 2016. New Copy ... $44.99 47.99
The great Charles Bradley left this planet all too soon – and although we've got this final album of music to enjoy, it's only a partial consolation for Bradley's early departure! The set's maybe a bit like some of the albums of Otis Redding material that were issued after his passing – in that there's some cuts here that were singles, mixed with unissued songs that really show Bradley on top of his game – working strongly with the Menehan Street Band at a level that really has us wanting more! Some of these tunes have a sharply righteous vibe – maybe even more edge than before from Charles – which makes the whole thing not just a completely essential addition to his catalog, but also a way of pointing towards a future that might have been. Titles include "Can't Fight The Feeling", "Luv Jones", "I Feel A Change", "Black Velvet", "Fly Little Girl", "Victim Of Love (electric version)", "Slip Away", and "Heart Of Gold". This version features a heavy velvet box, a business card, a black velvet slipmat, a photo book, inner sleeves – and a bonus EP, with the five bonus tracks "Message From Charles", plus stripped-down mixes of "Loving You Baby", "How Long", "Strictly Reserved For You", and "The World". Harold Melvin & The Blue NotesBlack & Blue/Wake Up Everybody (SACD multi-channel disc) ... CD
Philadelphia International/Vocalion (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $19.99 24.99
A pair of 70s gems from Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes! Black & Blue is classic Philly soul from Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes – a killer batch of studio tracks, despite the live image of the group on the cover! The album's got a slightly more expansive feel than some of the other Teddy Pendergrass-era albums by The Blue Notes – almost a mini-symphony of soul, and one that takes arrangements from Bobby Martin, Norman Harris, and Vince Montana – and wraps the vocals up in a soaring, righteous sort of feel! The rougher, more personal Teddy Pendergrass style of I Miss You is folded a bit more into the harmonies of the rest of the group here – and the result is a powerful wave of soul that pushes The Blue Notes right to the top of the pack. The album features classics like "The Love I Lost" and "Is There A Place For Me" – plus other nice material like "Concentrate On Me", "It All Depends On You", and "I'm Weak For You". On Wake Up Everybody, Teddy Pendergrass and crew get a bit more political than on earlier releases, and adopt the righteous bubbling soul groove that had put the O'Jays over the top a few years earlier – with incredible results! The title cut – "Wake Up Everybody" – would prove to be a great example of the political Philly International hit formula applied to socially conscious themes, but the record probably scored even bigger with the club crossover hit "Don't Leave Me This Way". Other tracks include "Keep On Lovin You", "Tell The World How I Feel About Cha Baby", "I'm Searching For A Love", and "You Know How To Make Me Feel So Good" – the latter two of which also feature female vocals by Sharon Paige. Bobby Martin, Norman Harris, and Ronnie Baker did the arrangements – and this was Teddy's last LP with the group. CD

Ropeadope, 2019. New Copy ... $6.99 14.99
Keyboardist Jason Miles has a long legacy in jazz – both as a sideman with bigger names, and as a leader on his own – but this set with his Kind Of New group may well be one of his best so far – a sweet batch of electric grooves that goes a long way towards updating older styles of keyboard funk! Miles has a wonderful way of letting the right sort of spaces fall between the notes – a vibe that takes us back to the best early work by Bobby Lyle or Rodney Franklin – and like both of those musicians, he knows that the best way into a groove is to take things easy, and let the music find itself – which it does wonderfully on the mixture of tunes included in the set. The set features work from Reggie Washington, Jay Rodriguez, and Steven Wolf – and titles include "The Other Side Of The World", "Black Magic", "Kathy's Groove", "Wolfdelic", "Kat's Eye", and "Jean Pierre". Amazing small group work from saxophonist David Murray – and a body of material that really shows the reedman coming into his own! The Black Saint/Soul Note label was one of the first to really show faith in Murray – and allow him to step from the underground into the limelight of global jazz – working with key players who helped him really find his voice, and show the world that he was a saxophonist who could be freely creative one minute, then damn soulful the next! All albums in the set are classics from this amazing run in Murray's career – and some might argue that they represent a high point in his talents as well – wonderfully expressive sessions that feature players that include Fred Hopkins, Richard Davis, Ray Drummond, or Reggie Workman on bass; Dave Burrell, Sonelius Smith, or John Hicks on piano; Sunny Murray, Joe Chambers, Ed Blackwell, or Steve McCall on drums. The set features 7 full albums, all with original artwork – Sweet Lovely, Morning Song, I Want To Talk About You, The Hill, A Sanctuary Within, Body & Soul, and Windward Passages. CD

Archie SheppComplete Remastered Recordings On Black Saint/Soul Note (Sea Of Faces/Down Home New York/Little Red Moon/California Meeting) (4CD set) ... CD
Black Saint (Italy), 1975/1984/1985. New Copy 4CD ... $32.99 41.98
A relatively small slice of the long and storied career of tenorist Archie Shepp – but a great one too, and a set of records that marks some of Shepp's more spiritual modes at the time! The package might well be worth it alone for the classic Sea Of Faces – a great little set from Archie Shepp – one of his strongest of the 70s, and a real return to the kind of spiritual jamming he was doing at the end of his time with Impulse Records! The album's well-known for it's great track "Song For Mozambique" – a spare and righteous number that features Bunny Fox singing in a sweet spiritual mode, while Charles Greenlee and Shepp recite chants over the jamming grooves of the band. Fox also sings on the mellow and soulful "I Know Bout The Life", and the Shepp group picks up a straight but hard mode on Cal Massey's great track "Lookin For Someone To Love". The extended jammer "Hipnosis" takes up all of side one – and it's a great little groover that builds nicely with a comping rhythm, yet which gives the band some nice room to solo in an exploratory fashion. Down Home New York is an overlooked killer from Archie Shepp – a set that almost recalls some of the spiritual moments of his later Impulse work, and which definitely has him moving past some of the straighter sounds of this period in his career! Things are never too outside or free, but there's a balance with straightness that's really great – so that when the rhythms are gentle, Archie might really take off in an edgey solo – or when the grooves have more force, he might hang inside with a soulful core energy, holding the whole group together. There's some great use of electric bass on the date – played by Saheb Sarbib – and other players include Charles McGhee on trumpet, Ken Warner on piano, and Marvin Smitty Smith on drums. Players vocalize a bit at times – in an older Shepp way – and titles include "Down Home New York", "May 16th", "Down Home New York", "Straight Street", and "The 4th World". Little Red Moon features some nicely spiritual currents too – with a group that includes Enrico Rava on trumpet – on titles that include "Naima", "Impromptu", "Whisper Not", and "Little Red Moon". California Meeting is a live set from the west coast – featuring some very long tracks with George Cables on piano, Herbie Lewis on bass, and Eddie Marshall on drums – plus bluesman Royal Blue on one track too. All four albums come in a box, in tiny recor-style sleeves! CD

Luaka Bop, 1995. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $21.99 25.98
A great collection of tracks – and one of the first chances for most of us to hear the funkier side of sounds from Peru! The work isn't as full-on funky as Brazilian grooves from the time, but does share a very strong influence from American styles – and really goes way past any cliches of pan pipes you might have for Peruvian music – to a more complicated world of criss-crossing styles that echoes more creative moments from Columbia as well. Soul Jazz (UK), Mid 90s. New Copy 2LP ... $32.99 36.99
Amazing sounds from a time when the London scene really took off – when it left behind some of its slavish love of American sounds in previous decades, and exploded with blinding dancefloor energy of its own! The music here represents a true UK hybrid – crafted after years of American house hitting the UK shores, transforming into the happier grooves of the early e-driven years, all while Thatcher's Britain kept stepping further into the dark. Enter the sounds of the city – a new wave of electric energy that was instantly urban and cosmic at the same time – beats that were as bold as hip hop, but even faster than house music – balanced by heavy-stepping, bass-bottom cuts that represented a far evolution beyond more familiar dub! The mix of modes set a fire that was heard around the world – leading to rhythmic changes for decades to come – and this great little package samples some of the best from the underground at the time, a scene that was already getting plenty of its own inspiration from the young Soul Jazz label. Titles include "Durban Poison" by Babylon Timewarp, "The Smokers Rhythm" by Rhythm For Reasons, "Snowball Remix" by Trip One, "Time & Age" by The Freaky, "Tings A Go On" by DJ Dubplate, "RK1" by The Terrorist, "Way Of Life" by New Vision, "Chill Out" by Hi Fi Power, "House Sensation" by Nu Jacks, and "Burial" by Leviticus. Faber & Faber (UK), 2017. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
You'll know Billy Bragg as a singer/songwriter, but he's also a surprisingly strong historian and author here – giving us a vivid look at the rise of skiffle bands on the UK scene at the end of the 50s! Skiffle was something that never played as strongly on our shores, but was inspired by American blues and folk – influences that younger UK artists used to create raw acoustic music that was heavy on rhythm, and a great contrast to the overproduced pop of England's post-war years! Long before the Beatles and the Stones, skiffle bands were the hippest things going in the British underground – and Billy Bragg does a great job of tracing the movement and showing its impact – something that's long overdue in the annals of music writing that's often too America-centric on the influences of British rockers in the 60s. 431 pages, hardcover, with some black and white images. Spinefarm/Virgin, 1980. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The classic debut of Killing Joke – a key set during the post-punk years, and a record that also set the tone for countless dark scenes for years to come! At this point, the group aren't too far from Joy Division – with very stark, almost stiff rhythms, topped with just the right amount of fuzz on the guitar and darkness in the production – handled pretty well by the group themselves, as if they had Martin Hannett with them in the studio! The pace picks up from time to time, almost a bit of Bauhaus too – and at this point in their career, Killing Joke are certainly very worthy comparisons to those other two groups! Titles include "Tomorrow's World", "Complications", "Requiem", "Change", "Primitive", "The Wait", and "Bloodsport". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Harold Melvin & The Blue NotesBe For Real – The PIR Recordings 1972 to 1975 (I Miss You/Black & Blue/To Be True/Wake Up Everybody/bonus tracks) (3CD set) ... CD
Philadelphia International/Soulmusic.com (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic collection – four classic Philly International albums from this legendary group – plus a CD of bonus material too! First up is I Miss You – a groundbreaking record that forever changed the course for male soul music in the 70s – a set that has the young Teddy Pendergrass fronting the Blue Notes with a sound that's completely sublime – a mix of rough and smooth, personal and polished – which really pushed the music forward strongly for generations! The strength of the record really comes through in these amazing long tracks that have Teddy speaking, then singing – "I Miss You" and "Be For Real" – delivering a message of mature, masculine power – very much in keeping with the new values that Philly International were putting forth. The whole album's great, though – a sophisticated soul masterpiece, with the tracks "Ebony Woman", "Yesterday I Had The Blues", and "Let It Be You". Next is Black & Blue – a killer batch of studio tracks, despite the live image of the group on the cover! To Be True is one of the legendary classics from the Philly International years of Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes – a time when the group was featuring the tremendous lead vocals of the great Teddy Pendergrass! The set's a stunner all the way through – one of the best Philly mixes of smooth, professional backings and deeply personal lyrics – as Teddy soars to the top of the mix with his excellent leads, and gets excellent support from the rest of the Blue Notes on harmonies – but also steps aside to make a bit of space to introduce singer Sharon Paige on one cut, who'd have a greater role in the group in years to come. The songwriting, production, and other Sigma Studios touches are sublime – and titles include "Hope That We Can Get Together Soon", "Where Are All My Friends", "Bad Luck", "To Be True", "Nobody Could Take Your Place", and "All Because Of A Woman". CD3 features bonus tracks – some of them nice and long – titles that include "I Miss You (live)", "Everybody's Talkin", "Bad Luck (Tom Moulton mix)", "Don't Leave Me This Way (Tom Moulton mix)", "The Love I Lost (live)", and "If You Don't Know Me By Now (live)". ✨✧ Bill RussoWorld Of Alcina ... LP
Atlantic, 1955. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the most ambitious recordings ever from Bill Russo – the composer/arranger who first rose to fame with Stan Kenton, and who's working here in an even more modern extension of Kentonite ideals! Side one of the record features Russo's beautiful composition "The World Of Alcina" – a tune originally written as a jazz ballet, but which comes across here with the fluid tones and deep colors of some of the more serious jazz soundtracks from the time. The 18 minute piece features some especially great work on horns – played by a large brace of brass instruments used with the careful, sensitive styles that clearly show an influence from Kenton. Side two features shorter tunes – most composed by Russo too, and played in ways that resonate more strongly with west coast small combo work of the time. There's a nice sense of counterpoint on most numbers, and a few tunes feature great interplay between Russo's valve trombone, Bill Porter's slide trombone, and the twin tenors of Sandy Mosse and Bill Trujillo – while others have a more open soloing style, with just Russo and Trujillo as the main horns. Rhythm is by Eddie Baker on piano, Israel Crosby on bass, and Mickey Simonetta on drums – and tracks include "For My Sister", "Under The Greenwood Tree", "L'Affair Bugs", "Bill's Blues", and "Speculum". Soul Jazz (UK), Mid 90s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Beautiful sounds from one of the coolest Italian composers of all time – one of our go-to favorites for both soundtrack and sound library material! This set has Alessandro Alessandroni hitting some sweet 70s modes – funky at times, slinky and sexy at others – all with this fantastic ear for sound and space, with a quality level that really sets him apart – and which makes this totally obscure gem every bit as great as some of the key Italian cinematic classics from the period! Imagine – you're working in the very solitary space of a sound library, knowing that you're going to make a record that will never be for sale in the record racks – yet you completely bring your a-game to the proceedings. That's what makes Alessandroni such a giant – and we're sure you'll agree once you hear this music! Black Saint (Italy), 1980s. Used 8CD ... Out Of Stock
A great run of work from legendary drummer Ed Blackwell – pulled together from his creative projects for the Black Saint/Soul Note label! The set features two albums from the Old & New Dreams group – Old & New Dreams and Tribute To Blackwell – both of them great! Like Blackwell, the other members of the group all were once associates of Ornette Coleman – an all-star combo that features work from Don Cherry on pocket trumpet, Dewey Redman on tenor, Charlie Haden on bass, and Ed Blackwell on drums! The sound is quite Ornette-inspired at times – with a definite late 70s harmelodic groove – but given the organic, acoustic nature of the lineup, the sound is almost more faithful to Coleman's vision than Ornette's records of the time. The album also features a compelling trio date – Transit – with Karl Berger on vibes, Dave Holland on bass, and Blackwell on drums. In Willisau features wonderfully soulful duets – with Dewey Redman on tenor next to Blackwell's drums – and the Walls/Bridges album features a trio with Redman, Blackwell, and Cameron Brown on bass. The set also features Morning Song – recorded under the leadership of David Murray – one of Murray's straighter sides from the early 80s, and exactly the kind of record to prove to the world that he could be a strong tenor traditionalist while still bringing an inventive sound to play! Murray's tone is deep and soulful, and often quite lyrical – set nicely in a quartet that features warm piano from John Hicks, bass from Reggie Workman, and drums from Ed Blackwell. The Workman/Blackwell component ensure that things still have an edge at times, even when swinging – and the tunes are a mix of Murray originals and a few standards. Last up is the album From Bad To Badder – played by The American Jazz Quintet – a group with Blackwell on drums, plus Alvin Batiste, Harold Battiste, Ellis Marsalis, and Richard Payne – as well as a guest appearance from New Orleans legend Earl Turbington! 7 albums, 8 CDs, and a heck of a lot of music! Duke University Press, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic look at the music of Henry Cow – that important British band of the 70s, and a key bridge between the worlds of art, experimentation, politics, and improvisation at the time! Henry Cow trafficked in ideas that were fairly intellectual, but the group had a way of bringing them down to a wider mainstream audience – in a mode that's summed up perfectly by the author in the ending essay of the book, in which he speaks of a "vernacular avant garde". Before that, though, he gives a richly detailed account of the group's artistic and political mission, and their role in the 70s UK scene – presented with far more detail than we ever could have hoped for, and which really illuminates the group's enigmatic records, as well as work by the related Slapp Happy too. A massive book – almost 500 pages, with copious notes, and a fair bit of black and white photos. Book

Cadet/Universal (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Some of the trippiest soul music ever recorded – an amazing collection of work by the legendary Rotary Connection – early home to vocalist Minnie Riperton and arranger Charles Stepney! Rotary Connection was a unique late 60s combination of soul, jazz, and rock-based modes – all inflected by more baroque production styles coming down in the Chicago scene of the time – balanced perfectly by the genius of Stepney – who often drew inspiration from avant classical work to round out his sound! Stepney gave the group a heady heady sound that went far beyond the airy vocal sound of Minnie Riperton or the rougher edge of Sidney Barnes – and the mix of unusual instrumentation, odd recording techniques, and strange timings made the group's music years ahead of its time – at a level that's really only fully appreciated these many years later. This 2CD set goes way beyond previous collections of Rotary Connection work, because it shows a real appreciation for the more adventurous sounds of Stepney in the studio – and brings together the trippiest, most freewheeling cuts from the group's 4 albums for Chess/Cadet – as well as a number of key tunes that have been heavily sampled over the years. 33 tracks in all – including "The Salt Of The Earth", "Rapid Transit", "Magical World", "I Am The Black Gold Of The Sun", "A-Muse", "Sursum Mentes", "Memory Band", "Hey Love", "The Sea & She", "Song For Everyman", "Love Is", "We're Going Wrong", "Life Could", "Teach Me How To Fly", "VIP", "Let Them Talk", "Love Has Fallen On Me", "Respect", "Pink Noise", "Want You To Know", and "This Town". ✨✧ Earl ScruggsNashville's Rock/Dueling Banjos/Storyteller & The Banjo Man/Top Of The World ... CD
BGO (UK), Early 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Four post-Flatts albums from the great Earl Scruggs – served up in a single set! First up is Nashville's Rock – a very unusual album from legendary bluegrass musician Earl Scruggs – a set that has him taking on a whole host of famous 60s rock tunes, and turning them into hip banjo-led instrumentals! By the time of the record, Earl had influenced a host of countless rockers – and it's quite a compelling change for Scruggs to handle material from that same scene, but bring it all right straight back to Nashville with his performance! Later Scruggs might end up in territory that was too rockish, but this record definitely has his classic sound right up front in the mix – even on the few tracks that might have a female backing chorus. Titles include "Everybody's Talkin", "Nashville Skyline Rag", "Hey Jude", "Love Is Just A Four Letter Word", "Bridge Over Troubled Water", "Honky Tony Women", and "Train Number Forty Five". Dueling Banjos is a record that takes its title from the big Deliverance hit by Eric Weissberg – but a set that reminds the world that when it comes to banjo, there's maybe nobody better than the great Earl Scruggs! And while the record has some of the elements of the Earl Scruggs Revue sound – in that his sons Randy and Gary are on the set – the whole thing is also all instrumental, and has a much more bluegrass-oriented vibe – thanks in part to great help from Vassar Clements on fiddle, Josh Graves on dobro, and Chip Young on guitar! The instrumentation is fantastic – and titles include "Peking Fling", "Just Joshin", "Flint Hill Special", "Black Mountain Blues", "Fireball Mail", and "Lonesome Ruben". Storyteller & The Banjo Man is a fantastic return to form for the great Tom T Hall – and a record that hints a bit at the bluegrass direction his later small label records would take! Earl Scruggs and his sons provide great musical backing, while Tom sings lead in that fantastic style of his – sometimes telling his own stories, sometimes singing the words of others – all in a lean, respectful, acoustic-driven setting that's maybe even better than most of Hall's own records at the time! Titles include "Shackles & Chains", "The Engineers Don't Wave From The Trains Anymore", "Song Of The South", "Don't Give Your Heart To A Rambler", "Dim Lights Thick Smoke", "No Expectations", "There Ain't Country Music On The Jukebox", and "Don't This Road Look Rough & Rocky". Top Of The World is a great late career album from Earl Scruggs – a set that features his sons still in the mix, but with a whole sort of production style and presentation that almost makes the whole thing a tribute to Earl's greatness! There's plenty of strong banjo solos in the lineup – and guests include Ricky Skaggs, Tracey Nelson, and the Burrito Brothers – but all used sparingly, with just the right vocal augmentation next to the instrumentation – and plenty of room for solos throughout. Titles include "Till the End Of The World Rolls Round", "Lay Me Down In Dixie", "Roller Coaster", "Carolina Star", "We'll Meet Again Sweetheart", and "Love Gone Cold". CD

Black Saint (Italy), 1981. Used ... $9.99
Hardly the blues that you might expect from the title – although knowing Muhal Richard Abrams, there's no doubt some sort of blues influence lurking in the background of his complicated orchestrations for the date! The album's a suite of original compositions by Abrams – all numbers played by a largeish group with lots of wonderful horn patterns – complexly woven together with lots of shifting shapes and tones, then sometimes breaking out in bold, free moments of improvisation! It's records like these that show why Abrams was one of the leading lights of the AACM by the early 80s – as much an important composer as a musician – equally skilled at both levels, and very sensitive to the strengths of the players he chose to work with. Muhal plays piano here – and other group members include Baikida Carroll on trumpet, Craig Harris on trombone, Wallace Laroy McMillan on baritone and flute, Jimmy Vass on alto and flute, Eugene Ghee on tenor and clarinet, Howard Johnson on tuba, Jean-Paul Bourelly on guitar, Michael Logan on bass, and Andrew Cyrille on drums. Smoking Afro Funk from the legendary Tony Allen – recording during an incredible world tour in 2004, in a lean, mean groove that stands as a nice counterpoint to his studio sessions of the past few years! Tony's working here with a stripped down quintet – led by himself on drums and vocals, and featuring lots of Fender Rhodes and other keyboards, plus trumpet, bass, and guitar. The sound here is really great – as all tunes on the set are nice and long – and taken in back-to-basic jams that get back to the core sound of Afro Funk that Tony first invented with Fela, while still retaining some of the more cosmic touches of some of Allen's recent work. There's no overly-clever electronics or studio tricks to get in the way of the grooves – and the tunes on the set jam with an intensity that shows why Tony's been selling out concerts around the world in recent years! A dead-serious effort from a saxophonist we hope to hear more from in years to come! The style here is a solid, soulful mode that really hearkens back to the best modal moments of the late 60s and early 70s – rhythms that seem to borrow an influence from African styles, but fused into a jazz mode that's got the soaring spirit of the post-Coltrane generation – very specifically like the hippest work on the Milestone or Black Jazz labels in the early 70s – work that would be a flawless match for Burkill's style here! Tony's got a really rich tone on the tenor – raspy and full at the same time, and really diving to the depths as he expresses himself on his solos – driven strongly by the bass of Neil Innes, who also co-wrote all the tunes with Burkill – with drums from Sam Hobbs, piano and organ from George Cooper, and percussion from Pete Williams. The mighty debut album from African disciples Culture pairing up with the Mighty Two, Joe Gibbs and Errol Thompson is one of the landmark sets of roots reggae, a defining moment of the genre dropped during the year when two sevens clashed. Cypress HillCypress Hill (25th Anniversary Skull) ... CD
Columbia/Get On Down, 1991. New Copy ... $32.99 75.98
Cypress Hill's debut masterpiece – one of the biggest and best first albums in 90s hip hop – in cased here in skull for its 25th Anniversary! There's little we can add to the canon when it comes to describing this album's impact, but it's still pretty revelatory. Like other west coast rap heavies of the time, Cypress Hill documents real world street violence with a darkly comic sensibility, redefined usage of the word "blunt" forever more, and simply delivered one of the most influential rap (or rock. . .considering the astonishing crossover success) albums of the decade. "How I Could Just Kill A Man", "Hand On The Pump", "Hole In The Head", "Real Estate", "Stoned Is The Way Of The Walk", "Phunky Feel One", "Pigs", "Latin Lingo", "Something For The Blunted", "Psychobeatbuckdown" and more. Get On Down's 25th Anniversary is one of the coolest, craziest things we've seen for a commemorative anniversary edition ever – housed in an amazin, hard resin black skull – essentially a 3D physical recreation of the group's 1991 logo – plus a 100 page hardcover book! Long-lost early sounds from Dudley Perkins – aka Declaime – mid 90s tracks recorded at the Crate Diggas Palace in Oxnard, with cuts and beats by a young Madlib! The music is early in both of their careers, but already shows the distinct path they would chart forward – especially Madlib, whose geniusly jazzy vision is very much in place in the way the tunes come together! Atlantic/Strawberry (UK), 1960s/Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... $29.99 38.99
Way more than just another collection of work by The Drifters – as this 3CD set goes way past all the other greatest hits compilations on the market, and brings together all sorts of wonderful overlooked tracks from their later years on Atlantic Records! At this point, former singer Clyde McPhatter and Ben E King have left the flock – leaving most of the lead work to Johnny Moore, and a bit to Rudy Lewis – in a lineup that maybe has the group even more unified as a whole, with a tremendous sense of harmony vocals that just keeps getting better and better as the 60s move on – and as the group try out all sorts of new rhythms and songs in the process. We really love The Drifters, and can't get enough of their special sound – and this set features plenty of unusual cuts to really keep our interest – a set of 76 tracks that includes "Up In The Streets Of Harlem", "We Gotta Sing", "Aretha", "Baby What I Mean", "Up Jumped The Devil", "I Dig Your Act", "You & me Together Forever", "Black Silk", "Desafinado", "Follow Me", "Come On Over To My Place", "Answer The Phone", "I Remember Christmas", "Spanish Lace", "I Don't Want To Go On Without You", "He's Just A Playboy", "Saturday Night At The Movies", "Looking Through The Eyes Of Love", "The Outside World", "My Islands In The Sun", "You Can't Love Them All", "Country To The City", "Still Burning In My Heart", and lots more! Knitting Factory, 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $27.99 29.99 On November 19, 2021
A really seminal album from Fela Kuti – searing live set that pairs him with drummer Ginger Baker – formerly of Cream, and a huge supporter of Fela's music on the UK scene! Baker had already picked up a lot of Fela's influence in his music – and rather than the record being one in which an African artist waters down his groove for a rock world, the set's instead one in which Baker makes a surprisingly strong stand with Fela's Africa 70 group – the classic lineup that featured the great Tony Allen on drums! The sound of the set is great – well on a par with Fela's best work of the time, and perhaps even a bit better – given the extra drive that Baker brings to the session. Tracks are all long, yet a bit more focused than usual – and titles include "Ye Ye De Smell", "Black Man's Cry", and "Let's Start". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Aretha FranklinSoft & Beautiful ... LP
Columbia, Mid 60s. Very Good ... $11.99
The title's certainly right on this one, because the album is soft and beautiful – recorded by Aretha Franklin in a moody late nite mode that's similar to early 60s work by Sarah Vaughn or Dinah Washington on Roulette! Backings are by Belford Hendricks – relatively full, with strings and sometimes a bit of backing vocals – and Aretha's vocals drift nicely over the top with a relatively slow pace overall. And while this isn't the hard-hitting Atlantic soul that made her fame, the record's still a great demonstration of Franklin's many talents – and heck, if she'd cut a set like this these days, we're sure she'd get a Grammy for returning to the classics! Titles include "Only The Lonely", "Shangri-La", "A Mother's Love", "Jim", "Friendly Persuasion", and "People". LP, Vinyl record album

Justin GiffordStreet Poison – The Biography Of Iceberg Slim (hardcover) ... Book
Doubleday, 2015. New Copy ... $4.99 26.95
The legendary Iceberg Slim has given us plenty of his own story over the years – but this book is the first to look at the man behind the man – writer Robert Beck, who started as a pimp and became a surprisingly successful author – as well as an underground figure who inspired a later generation of hip hop artists as well! If you've ever read any of Slim's books, you'll know the world that he came from – but author Justin Gifford gets past the hype of the character, and looks at Beck's background and upbringing, his sometimes less-than-successful career as a hustler, and his move to convey the spirit of the streets on paper. Gifford's an academic, but presents the book in a nicely lively style – and the whole thing is hardcover, 265 pages, with some black and white images. Book

A fascinating look at a world of cinema from the last 20 years of the past century – served up in a host of rare newspaper ads that were painstakingly collected by the author! Yet Michael Gingold isn't just some guy who snipped his way through the paper for decades – as he also presents these images with both information on the films, and examples of the best reviews that were written at the time – often laid out next to images from papers and press kits, in both color and black and white. There's plenty of classic 80s and 90s films in the book – but there's also plenty that we either didn't remember, or didn't know about at all – served up in a heavy, hardcover volume that runs for 268 pages, with an index of all the films at the back! A hell of a great idea for a book – a collection of newspaper ads for horror films from the 90s and 00s – served up with page after page of striking images, as well as text from the author about each film, and snippets of press reviews from the time! The book is a beautiful tribute to a cinematic world gone by – and a great reminder of how important a full page ad in the paper was towards getting us out to the theater – a time when the two-dimensional presentation of the film was sometimes every bit as creepy as what you'd see in the movie! Images here were collected by the author over a 20 year period, and are presented chronologically – but not in a slipshod way, as the accompanying text does a heck of a lot to illuminate the images – which are both in color and black and white. 271 pages, hardcover, and with an index at the back! One of the more string-heavy sessions in RCA's Stereo Action series, but still worthy of the dynamic style that made the Stereo Action titles some of RCA's best easy recordings from the 60s! Marty's got orchestrations here that are a bit quirkier than usual – making good use of the stereo effects to shift things back and forth, picking out some odd instruments from the rest of the pack, and even throwing in the odd chorus vocal – which comes off nicely in such a setting. Titles include "High On A Windy Hill", "Out Of Nowhere", "It's Magic", "That Old Black Magic", "I've Got The World On A String", and "Little Sir Echo" – a great number with dreamy voices! CD

✨✧ Benny GolsonTake A Number From 1 to 10 ... LP
Argo, 1961. Very Good+ ... $9.99
A record with a gimmick – but one that's totally great, and really unique for the time! The "1 to 10" in the title is the way that the album spins out – as track 1 features Golson blowing solo tenor, track 2 features him in duet, track 3 a trio – and so on, until track 10, which features a ten-piece group! One of the best things about the record is the way it really lets you focus on Golson's tone and phrasing – as even some of the bigger group tunes have a nicely laidback feel that's really dominated by Benny's solo work – and in a way, the record's a nice bridge between the more tightly arranged Golson sessions of the late 50s, and some of his looser sides of later years. Players include Cedar Walton, Curtis Fuller, Freddy Hubbard, and Albert Heath – among ohters – and titles include the Golson originals "Little Karin", "Swing It", "The Touch", "Impromptune", and "Time", plus versions of "You're My Thrill", "Out Of This World", and "I Fall In Love Too Easily". A fascinating look at the world of Mexican music in the 20th Century – put together in collaboration with Arhoolie Records, the label that's done plenty to reissue the music over the years! The book begins with the huge archive of recordings by the label's founder, Chris Strachwitz – then takes off in a number of different streams – providing historical context, critical evaluation, and even some discographical details – in the form of various lists and sections of music. The book looks at some key styles too – including corridos and mariachi, traced both through Mexican recordings, and US singles by Mexican-Americans – and the whole thing is only the tip of the iceberg, in relation to the 40,000 recordings that have been digitized by the University Of California Library as part of the project. Still, there's plenty here to get you started – a huge amount of information that's even more inspirational than some of Arhoolie's great reissues over the years – in an oversized book that's 226 pages, softcover, with many black and white images too. Pacific Jazz, 1955. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
An archetypal record from the west coast scene of the 50s – a sublime batch of lightly grooving numbers from Chico Hamilton's famous early Quintet! The power here really comes from a triad of three players – reedman Buddy Collette, mentioned in the title and playing flute, alto, tenor, and clarinet; guitarist Jim Hall, whose spacious use of his instrument set new standards with this record; and cellist Fred Katz, often an unsung hero whose gentle sound shapes really helped bring a sense of tone and color to the group. Also featured is bassist Carson Smith, giving the same great sensitive accompaniment here he did in Gerry Mulligan's early quartet – and Chico himself is on drums, of course, but often playing with unusual timings and touches that really make for a lot more than conventional rhythm! Titles include "Blue Sands", "The Sage", "A Nice Day", "Buddy Boo", and "Spectacular" – as well as "Free Form", which is totally improvised – although in a way that's very different from any 60's track that would have the same sort of name! Just when you thought Prince Paul and Cat Power would never make a record together PRESTO – it's the new Handsome Boy album! HBMS takes a bit more of a chillout tack with this long overdue second opus – with lots of laidback beats and samples, and a surprising amount of live instrumentation! The gleeful, sarcastic comedy of the stellar first album remains intact, with some genuinely amusing skits (including one with Jay Z appearing under the pseudonym Hines Buchanan), and the deep range of guest vocalists isn't as surprising as how strong their work is in the best tunes. It would have been pretty easy for Prince Paul and Automator to find a bunch of interesting names to flesh out their big pop culture frappe, but something else altogether to make trippy hip hop tracks featuring Cat Power and the Hieroglyphics make sense on the same record. Sweet jazzy funk – from the cornbelt of Omaha! The LA Carnival are one of those rarer-than-rare funk groups who not only never got their due back in the day – but also recorded a heck of a lot of great material that never even got issued! They have a totally great sound that bubbles in jazzy licks on trumpet, sax, and organ – next to tighter, funkier vamping on the rhythms – all of which makes for a killer approach to the groove that's surprisingly fresh, given the passage of three decades since the group's heyday. And leave it to the folks at Stones Throw – who know how to dig beyond the crates, into the earth, and come up with a lost slice of funk history that has made the world a much better musical place. The trio started out as an already-great harmony act in the late 60s – a group who were even sweeter and more soaring than some of their contemporaries – making them perfectly placed to move into some of the more righteous harmony modes of the 70s – including some surprising turns towards more righteous, political material. The 22 track package is the greatest we've ever seen on the group – 15 pages of deeply detailed notes, in true Ace/Kent mode – plus singles that include three by The Insiders, "I'm Better Off Without You", "If You Had A Heart", and "I'm Just A Man" – as well as Main Ingredient singles that include "Black Seeds Keep On Growing", "California My Way", "Magic Shoes", "Everybody Plays The Fool", "You've Got To Take It If You Want It", "Girl Blue", "Happiness Is Just Around The Bend", "I Was Born To Lose You", "Brotherly Love", "You've Been My Inspiration", "I'm So Proud", "Spinning Around", "I'm Leaving This Time", "Rolling Down A Mountainside", "The Gold Old Days", and "Shame On The World". Herbie MannLive At The Whiskey 1969 – Unreleased Masters ... CD
Atlantic/Real Gone, 1969. New Copy 2 CDs ... On October 1, 2021 (delayed)
Never-heard music from one of the hippest groups ever led by flute man Herbie Mann – a killer lineup that includes Roy Ayers on vibes, Sonny Sharrock on guitar, and Steve Marcus on tenor! The tracks here are all previously unreleased – pulled from the same recordings that gave the world the Live At The Whiskey A Go Go album, but much more far-reaching overall – in a way that not only shows the full range of sounds the group could produce, but which also really brings out some individual moments of genius from each player! Roy's vibes are wonderful – with some very bold chromes, but his usual sense of warmth, too – which can make for a striking comparison with the edges in Sharrock's guitar and the soulfulness of Marcus' tenor. Linda Sharrock sings a bit on the record, but most of the album features long, extended jams from a group that also includes Miroslav Vitous on bass and Bruno Carr on drums – on titles that include "Untitled Jam", "Black Woman", "All Blues", "Portait Of Linda In Three Colors All Black", "Chain Of Fools", "Tangier/If I Were A Carpenter", "Scarborough Fair", "Philly Dog", and "Comin Home Baby/Battle Hymn Of The Republic". Jimmy McDonoughSoul Survivor – A Biography Of Al Green (hardcover) ... Book
Da Capo, 2017. New Copy ... $6.99 28.00
The first really in-depth look at the life of the great Al Green – a book that traces the fascinating journey that led a young man from Memphis to the top of the soul charts in the 70s – only to leave the world of secular music for the church in the following decade, then go on to a surprisingly rich career in decades that followed! The book is especially great at the roots of Al's sound and style – and if you dig southern soul as much as us, you'll really appreciate the author's account of the long journey before Green rose to fame at Hi Records – the kind of journeyman work that's often eclipsed when an artist becomes a star. The book also includes an appendix with a discography and legal notes too – and is over 400 pages, hardcover, with some black and white images. Book

Moby Grape's self-conscious, but hardly less groovy late 60s excursion into loose, free form and largely instrumental psychedelia – the sweet and therefore appropriately titled Grape Jam! GJ is really a world away from their earlier rock regalia – with superstar special guests Al "How Does It Feel" Cooper and Mike Bloomfield brought in the flesh out the open-ended sounds. The sounds roll from walloping instrumental rock, to bluesier jams, to some driving nearly funky bits! Titles include "Never", "Boysenberry Jam", "Black Currant Jam", "Marmalade" and "The Lake". Alicia Hall MoranHere Today ... CD
Yes, 2017. New Copy ... $7.99 19.99
The striking image on the cover is a great indication of what you'll hear within – as singer Alicia Hall Moran opens up and completely reworks music from the American songbook, while also adding in some great compositions of her own! The record features songs you'd normally hear in the voices of Nina Simone, Stevie Wonder, and Billie Holiday – but given these very unusual arrangements that use guitar, drums, and light strings – plus some of Alicia's own piano – all to paint a very different version of the world when mixed with Moran's own words and very unusual style. There's a richness here that points the way towards a new spirit of America – one that's there for anyone with the ears to hear it – on titles that include "Round About De Mountain", "We All Just Live In The World", "Two Wings", "Feeling God", "Gold", "God Bless The Child", "Black Wall Street", "Higher", and "Oklahoma Girl". Gerry Mulligan meets up with a great array of 50s modernists here – in specially setting dedicated to all Mulligan-penned compositions! Although a radical player himself on the baritone sax, Gerry also added something strong to the 50s jazz catalog with his great tunes from the early days – gently modern numbers that slowly became standards over the years, thanks to respect from other players. The best of these tracks are showcased here – played by Mulligan with a sax section that includes Zoot Sims on alto and tenor, Al Cohn on tenor and baritone, Lee Konitz on alto, and Allan Eager on alto and tenor. Rhythm is by the piano-less section of Freddie Green on guitar, Henry Grimes on bass, and Dave Bailey on drums – and titles include "Venus De Milo", "Revelation", "Sextet", "Turnstyle", "Four & One More", "Crazy Day", and "Disc Jockey Jump". Iggy PopIdiot ... LP
RCA, 1977. Very Good ... $59.99
Iggy's first proper solo record, and a strange morass of junkie desperation and guttural punk funk! The Idiot is the ultimately the culmination of a very smart decision to move away from the guitar roar of the Stooges and closer to the sounds his longtime champion David Bowie was experimenting with at the time, with a little bit of Lou Reed for good measure – but make no mistakes, this is Iggy's show. It's as fascinating overall as it is impressive on a more visceral level, with heavy bass rhythms and keys intergral to the sound, and weary latenight storytelling that trips you out on contact. All tunes co-written by Bowie, who would go on to make a lot of money off "China Girl" a few years into the 80s when the world was more ready for it, plus the classic "Nightclubbing", "Sister Midnight", "Baby", "Dum, Dum Boys", "Tiny Girls" and "Mass Production". ✨✧ Sun RaIn The Orbit Of Ra ... CD
Strut (UK), 1960s/1970s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $15.99 16.99
A really wonderfully-done collection of work from the legendary Sun Ra – put together by longtime musical partner Marshall Allen, and way way different than the typical mish-mash of tracks you'd find on some of the budget or public domain titles on the market! First off, the track selection is really thoughtful – music that definitely defines the Arkestra in the 60s and 70s, but which also highlights some of its overlooked corners too – pulled together from recordings that appeared on the Saturn, Impulse, and other labels – all curated and remastered by Art Yard, who've done their share of great Ra reissues over the years. Plus, the package features a few unreleased performances as well – and although it would serve as a great introduction to the music of Sun Ra, it's also really perfectly put together for longtime Ra fans as well – given the focus, track selection, and overall quality of the whole thing. The sounds are sublime – maybe one of the best summations of the righteous, cosmic genius of the Arkestra at its best – and titles include "Reflects Motion", "Island In The Sun (extended)", "Somewhere In Space", "The Lady With The Golden Stockings", "Somebody Else's World", "Ancient Aethiopia", "Astro Black", "Have You Heard The Latest News From Neptune", "We Travel The Spaceways", and "Plutonian Nights". 2CD version also includes the never-heard "Trying To Put The Blame On Me". A really beautiful collection of rare tracks from Sun Ra – put together by the mighty Gilles Peterson, who we've trusted for years to give us some of the most soulful, cosmic music on this planet! Reggae StringsReggae Strings/Reggae Strings Vol 2 (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Trojan/Doctor Bird (UK), 1972. New Copy ... $16.99 24.99
A great pair of records – plus a huge amount of bonus tracks too! First up is the debut Reggae Strings album – one of the most unique albums on the Trojan label during the 70s – and a surprising hit for the company too! The approach here is very unusual – as the cuts here all are earlier Trojan vocal singles that had larger backings provided by UK maestro Johnny Archey – then stripped of their vocals and presented as instrumentals! As you'd guess by the names, Archey adds strings to the Kingston rhythms – but the approach is surprisingly nice – almost like early reggae rhythms coming into play with the best of the UK sound library generation – with results that are as groovy as that description might imply. Titles include "World Without Love", "One Woman", "Let The Man Go", "Leaving Rome", "Pantomime", "God Bless The Children", and "Young Gifted & Black". Reggae Strings 2 is a set that follows nicely on the first Reggae Strings effort on Trojan – and, like the first, a package that features older vocal tracks with the lyrics stripped away, all to provide a focus on the fuller orchestrations of Johnny Archey! The approach is cooler than you'd guess – lots of nice charts that bring a bit of 70s smooth to the sound of Trojan – almost like Barry White was recording down in Kingston – on titles that include "How Many Times", "Jump Hallelujah", "Strange World", "It's Too Late", "Tell It Like It Is", "Scientist", "Jamaica Jerkoff", and "Sweet Bitter Love". 2CD set features 25 bonus tracks too – all the original vocal tunes used for the strings versions – with work by Bob Andy, The Dynamites, Greyhound, Bob & Marcia, Nicky Thomas, Danny Ray, Merlene Webber, The Uniques, Pioneers, Winston Groovy, and others! 51 tracks in all – and a nice set of notes. SOUL, 1966. Near Mint- ... $11.99
A great full length album from Motown's mighty Jimmy Ruffin – and a set with a lot deeper soul sound than you'd guess from the "top ten" in the title! The music's not commercial, but some of the sharpest Motown soul of the time – the kind of work that made the young Jimmy as important a solo male act to Motown as Marvin Gaye – thanks to a wonderfully crackling, raspy style of singing that makes any tune really stand out strongly. Some of the numbers here are originals associated with Ruffin, and others are 60s hits by others – but completely remade by Jimmy with his wonderful approach – and titles include the classic "What Becomes Of The Brokenhearted", plus "I've Passed This Way Before", "Gonna Give Her All The Love I've Got", "World So Wide Nowhere To Hide", "Black Is Black", "Bless You", "How Can I Say I'm Sorry", and "As Long As There Is Love". Now Again, Late 60s/1970s. New Copy 3 CDs ... $13.99 29.98
Amazing sounds from The Stark Reality – an obscure group from the early 70s, but one who've really risen to fame over the years – thanks to their groundbreaking ear for new music, and their freewheeling way with a funky groove! This package brings together all the incredible work recorded by the group in the late 60s and early 70s – a mindblowing assortment of funky and fuzzy jazz tracks – almost all of which are graced by the offbeat vibes work of Monty Stark! Stark often adds a bit of distortion into his instrument, which makes for a very tripped-out approach to vibes – one that blends perfectly with the heavy funk of some of the rhythms, and the freaky guitar lines added to most tracks by a young John Abercrombie. Yet at other times, things are very laidback and chilled-out – balanced beautifully from track to track, in a way that illustrates the larger picture the group were always going for in their music. This massive package brings together everything Stark Reality ever recorded – their famous Discovers Hoagy Carmichael's Music Shop album, the Acting Thinking Feeling live performance, the Roller Coaster Ride/1969 album, and lots of rare singles too – more than enough music to please any fan of the group, and blow the minds of anyone who's just getting a first taste. Titles include "Roller Coaster Ride", "On Being Black", "New World Generation", "Theme To Say Brother", "Dreams", "Clouds", "All You Need To Make Music", "Rocket Ship", "Cooking", "The Old Prospector", and "Junkman's Song". A much-needed look at the genius of The Art Ensemble Of Chicago – one of the coolest, most compelling groups to emerge in the great wave of avant jazz in the late 60s – and one who continued to give the world a lifetime legacy of groundbreaking music! There's been plenty written on the group over the years, but author Paul Steinbeck really takes things further – by bringing his own musicological training to play with the performances of the group – expanding our understanding of their sounds with rich interpretation of key moments – balanced out nicely by a fuller history of the group and its individual members – and their importance both on the American and global jazz scenes during the 60s, 70s, and 80s. A much-needed collection of work from Tintern Abbey – a group who recorded one famous psych single for the Deram label in 1967 – then seemingly disappeared from the scene before giving the world any sort of a full album! This set corrects that mistake, and then some – as it brings together a total of 36 tracks recorded by the group, including material designed for a follow-up, and lots of other gems that appear here for the first time ever – a really magnificent batch of music that may well have you putting Tintern Abbey right up there next to some of your favorite late 60s London psychedelic acts! They're not entirely Pink Floyd, but they've got more than enough chops to match the rest of the best of that heady late 60s moment – freaky fuzzy guitar when needed, a great sense of presentation and production, and a really dark sensibility with both the lyrics, and the way they are phrased – which makes even some of the demo tracks come across beautifully. Island/Esoteric (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... $29.99 38.99
A trio of overlooked albums from UK group Vinegar Joe – packaged here with bonus tracks as well! First up is the group's debut, Vinegar Joe – a record with a UK blend of roots rock and deeper blues currents – but served up in that 70s style that takes all the best elements way past their familiar incarnations! The group sports two singers – a young Robert Palmer and female vocalist Elkie Brooks – and although Palmer would soon emerge as a more pop-oriented artist, he's got plenty of soulful chops here – but maybe still only second to Elkie, who soars out with the sort of inspiration that must have touched Janis Joplin as well. Titles include "Circles", "Leg Up", "See The World", "Never Met A Dog", "Live A Little Get Somewhere", and "Avinu Malkenu". Next up is Rock & Roll Gypsies – a record with a really wonderful sound – tight, but never too polished – maybe that UK love of American soul inspirations that folks know more famously in work by artists like Joe Cocker or Traffic, but which is served up here with a really unique feel by the overlooked Vinegar Joe! The group sports a fantastic lead female vocalist in Elkie Brooks, who'd later go on to make some great records on her own – and a young Robert Palmer rounds out the lyrics with a quality that's so different than his later work, and maybe even more soulful overall. Titles include "Falling", "It's Gettin To The Point", "Buddy Can You Spare Me A Line", "Angel", "No One Ever Do", "Forgive Us", and "Charley's Horse". Last up is Six Star General – the third album from Vinegar Joe, and a set that we're not sure got the same global circulation as the earlier albums – which is a real shame, as the group here are maybe even more focused on their sound than before! By this point, Robert Palmer has left the group, but the wonderful Elkie Brooks is still in the lead on guitar – and the group have impeccable instrumentation from Jim Mullen on guitar, Keef Harley on drums, and Mike Deacon on keyboards. Titles include "Proud To Be", "Black Smoke Rising From The Calumet", "Let Me Down Easy", "Fine Thing", "Lady Of The Rain", and "Dream My Own Dreams". Also features bonus tracks "Speed Queen Of Ventura", "Long Way Round", and single versions of "Black Smoke Rising From The Calument" and "Rock & Roll Gypsies". CD
