✨✧ Black MoonEnta Da Stage (with bonus tracks) (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Wreck/P-Vine (Japan), 1993. New Copy ... $29.99
The legendary debut of Black Moon – and a landmark indie hip hop classic from the early 90s east coast scene! Beloved by the deeper digging hip hop heads back in the day, and making a few waves commercially with the singles "Who Got Da Props" and "I Got Cha Opin", this one never really got its due in the mainstream despite being so hugely influential – all the more reason to dig back into the set all these many years later! Produced by Da Beatminerz and featuring appearances by Smif-N-Wessun and Havoc from Mobb Deep, this one's well worth catching up on – with the tracks "Powaful Impak", "Ack Like U Want It", "Sh** Iz Real", "Enta Da Stage", "I Got Cha Opin", "Who Got Da Props", "Buck Em Down", and "Make Munne". CD features bonus tracks – "I Got Cha Opin (voc)" and "Buck Em Down (Beatminerz rmx)". CD

Tight, straight forward independent hip hop from an influential crew. ✨✧ Archie SheppComplete Remastered Recordings On Black Saint/Soul Note (Sea Of Faces/Down Home New York/Little Red Moon/California Meeting) (4CD set) ... CD
Black Saint (Italy), 1975/1984/1985. New Copy 4CD ... Out Of Stock
A relatively small slice of the long and storied career of tenorist Archie Shepp – but a great one too, and a set of records that marks some of Shepp's more spiritual modes at the time! The package might well be worth it alone for the classic Sea Of Faces – a great little set from Archie Shepp – one of his strongest of the 70s, and a real return to the kind of spiritual jamming he was doing at the end of his time with Impulse Records! The album's well-known for it's great track "Song For Mozambique" – a spare and righteous number that features Bunny Fox singing in a sweet spiritual mode, while Charles Greenlee and Shepp recite chants over the jamming grooves of the band. Fox also sings on the mellow and soulful "I Know Bout The Life", and the Shepp group picks up a straight but hard mode on Cal Massey's great track "Lookin For Someone To Love". The extended jammer "Hipnosis" takes up all of side one – and it's a great little groover that builds nicely with a comping rhythm, yet which gives the band some nice room to solo in an exploratory fashion. Down Home New York is an overlooked killer from Archie Shepp – a set that almost recalls some of the spiritual moments of his later Impulse work, and which definitely has him moving past some of the straighter sounds of this period in his career! Things are never too outside or free, but there's a balance with straightness that's really great – so that when the rhythms are gentle, Archie might really take off in an edgey solo – or when the grooves have more force, he might hang inside with a soulful core energy, holding the whole group together. There's some great use of electric bass on the date – played by Saheb Sarbib – and other players include Charles McGhee on trumpet, Ken Warner on piano, and Marvin Smitty Smith on drums. Players vocalize a bit at times – in an older Shepp way – and titles include "Down Home New York", "May 16th", "Down Home New York", "Straight Street", and "The 4th World". Little Red Moon features some nicely spiritual currents too – with a group that includes Enrico Rava on trumpet – on titles that include "Naima", "Impromptu", "Whisper Not", and "Little Red Moon". California Meeting is a live set from the west coast – featuring some very long tracks with George Cables on piano, Herbie Lewis on bass, and Eddie Marshall on drums – plus bluesman Royal Blue on one track too. All four albums come in a box, in tiny recor-style sleeves! CD

Fantasy, Late 70s. New Copy Gatefold ... $29.99
A cool collection of funky tracks from the Fantasy Records catalog of the 70s – the kind of hip cuts that were often better than mainstream disco – and which sometimes used a bit of jazz in the instrumentation as well! There's a few spacey themes here, but maybe not as much as you'd guess from the cover and title – but that's OK with us, because we can totally dig these down to earth grooves! Titles include "Let's Get Crackin" by Shock, "I Like It" by Players Association, "Funky Force" by Larry Williams, "Space Is The Place" by Pleasure, "Close Encounters Of A Funky Kind" by Fat Larry's Band, "Space Bass" by Slick, "Messages From The Stars (long wave mix)" by Rah Band, "Do It 4 U" by Starship Connection, and "Sparkle (single edit)" by Fat Larry's Band. Dr JohnSun, Moon, & Herbs (50th Anniversary deluxe 3LP edition) (2021 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Atco, 1971. New Copy 3LP (reissue)... On July 17, 2021
Mac really steps out on this one – pushing past his usual hip studio take on New Orleans soul, to a more expansive style that includes performances by a host of surprise guests like Mick Jagger, Eric Clapton, PP Arnold, Graham Bond, and Doris Troy. That loping, trippy groove of John's is still firmly in place, shifted slightly – kind of a New Orleans meets post 60s London style. There's also a really unique, kind of mellow Cajun folk blues thing going on, and it balances a lot of really disparate elements in a fairly unified feel. It's sort of like Captain Beefheart playing lounge piano in a swamp – an ambitious style that you really have to respect and appreciate. Titles include "Craney Crow", "Black John The Conqueror", "Zu Zu Mamou", and "Pots On Fiyo" "Where Ya At Mule", "Familiar Reality", and more. (Note: This item is not for sale online until noon on Saturday, July 17. It is in limited supply – and by nature of the Record Store Day rules it will be offered for sale first to customers who visit the Dusty Groove retail outlet in Chicago the morning of Saturday, July 17. Jose JamesBlack Magic (10th anniversary edition) ... LP
Brownswood/Rainbow Blonde, 2010. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $22.99 25.99
A brilliant second set from Jose James – and that's saying a lot, given that his debut was already a classic in our book! The sound here is a little more full, and a little more confident – a magical blend of James' raspy vocals with some jazz and funk-inflected rhythms – never overdone, and all put together with the kind of poise and depth that's made Jose an artist to watch since his very first single! There's a positive, progressive vibe to the whole record – the kind of excitement we only feel grabbing us once in a blue moon – and the sound is expanded a bit from the laidback combo of the first record, thanks to production help from Flying Lotus, Mitsu The Beats, and others. But James' vocals are always center stage in the mix, no matter what the setting – and titles include "Lay You Down", "Touch", "Promise In Love", "Warrior", "Made For Love", "Code", "Save Your Love For Me", "Detroit Loveletter", and "Beauty". Soul Jazz (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 3LP ... $34.99 39.99
The hippest funky jazz from the start of the 70s – music that takes all the pride, power, triumph, and challenge of the 60s – and focuses into a bold new energy for a young generation! The work here draws equally from jazz and soul, with lots of other global influences coming into play as well – and together, the tracks present an amazing portrait of a generation moving past the initial Civil Rights struggle – building a new culture through righteous expressions like these! Nearly every track is a classic – and all the artists are ones we've supported for years on their own reissues – and together, the tracks sound wonderful, especially when given the full sort of Soul Jazz presentation with great notes and other details. Turns out, folks were going to the moon long before Neil Armstrong took his giant step for mankind – spinning out into space with rare singles like these – all great moon-themed numbers that rocket into space with solid fuel of their own! The set's got this fantastic mix of styles – deep soul, heavy funk, raw garage rock, and stomping R&B – plus a few other numbers that almost defy description, but which share plenty with the rest in terms of their space-age themes and cool approach to instrumentation and production! Now Again, Early 70s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Raw, rumbling outsider psych from Stephen David Heitkotter – a wild and raucous stream of rambling genius from the early 70s! There's a loose, bluesy approach at the core – with long songs and a disquieting, yet engrossing mood that makes the set one of the most compelling lost rock records of the early 70s. This amazing set of Cali bedroom psych (literally – it was recorded in a bedroom) has built up a deservedly lofty legacy in collectors circles, but it's also something of a mystery – which is what makes this Now Again issue such a treasure. The whole package has been very well researched, and long unanswered questions about Heitkotter and the recording(s) are answered at long last – in a solid booklet of of notes by Eothen Alapatt with rare photos, and an even rawer batch of bonus material. Titles include "Hangin All Night", "I Don't Mind", "Quaker Dog Got Away", "Cadillac Woman" and "Fly Over The Moon" – plus 6 more untitled tracks/demos. Amazing! CD

Gil Scott-Heron at his early best and most revolutionary – circa Small Talk At 125th And Lenox, Pieces Of Man and Free Will, plus a host of rare and unreleased material – the complete Flying Dutchman Masters in a masterfully compiled anthology! Rather than simply collecting the original Flying Dutchman albums into a box set, BGP does a terrific job here of organizing it by style. Disc One (Songs) focuses on the soul-based songcraft – while Disc Two (Poetry, Jazz & Blues) features the strident jazzy poetry that inspired most hip hop and spoken word to come. Disc Three features alternate takes and rarities – all of which have never been officially released before now! The set includes every recording that Gil made for Flying Dutchman that's known to exist – and if you're keeping tally, that's all of the tracks from the above-named classic albums – plus the great "Artificialness" from Pretty Purdie's Stand By Me record with Gil on vocals – and the surviving alternate takes. Even if you have all of the original albums, the set is worth picking up for the bonus material and the thick, nicely done booklet of notes and photo – which really adds some top notch historical perspective. 51 tracks on 3CDs: "Lady Day And John Coltrane", "Home Is Where The Hatred Is", "Whitey On The Moon", "Free Will", "Pieces Of Man", "Brother", "Ain't No New Thing", "The Needle's Eye", "The Get Out OF The Ghetto Blues", "Evolution (And Flashback)", "Billy Green Is Dead", "The Middle Of Your Day", "Save The Children", "Who'll Pay Reparations On My Soul?" and many more. ✨✧ War & Eric BurdonBlack Man's Burdon ... LP
Far Out/MGM, 1971. Sealed 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A surprisingly great pairing of talents – the post-Animals Eric Burdon on vocals, and early grooves from Cali funk legends War – coming together here in a blend that still holds up beautifully after all these years! Burdon was already getting pretty soulful on the last few Animals albums on MGM – and he really advances that style here when working with War's great grooves – some of the grittiest, nastiest, most stretched out work of their career – especially on some of the album's nicely long tracks. There's some nice Latin currents to the music at times, and the group vocalize alongside Burdon at times – and titles include a long version of "Paint It Black", plus "Bare Back Ride", "Sun/Moon", "Pretty Colors", "Gun", "Nuts Seeds & Life", "They Can't Take Away Our Music", and "Spirit". Mississippi, Late 60s/Early 70s/Early 90s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A great mix of vintage and later work from Abner Jay – a unique one man band in the best rural blues tradition of the south – and who, like some of the best, doesn't ever use his multi-instrument talent as a gimmick! Instead, Jay works here in a mode that's like a stripped-down combo, providing vocals with his own guitar, harmonica, and rudimentary percussive elements – used to emphasize the already-rhythmic modes of his performance, in ways that also give a nice punch to his vocals! The package brings together material recorded by Jay in his home in the 60s and 70s, plus other tracks recorded in the early 90s – all with a very unified vibe – and titles include "Love Wheel", "I Cried", "Cocaine Blues", "Too Poor To Live Too Poor To Die", "Ole Black Joe", "I'm So Depressed", and "The Royal Path". Incredible sounds from the Chess Records catalog – not the blues that you might know the label for, but a huge range of funk, soul, and jazz tracks from the headiest years of the 60s and 70s – a time when the Chicago scene was really turning out some incredible musical hybrids! As you'd guess from the title, all the cuts here have had a new life in recent years – thanks to samples by hip hop artists or other producers – but the original grooves are even better than the tracks that used them, and come together here to make one of the most mindblowing collections of Chess material we've ever heard! The package is nicely heavy on sounds from the Cadet/Concept years of the label – with more than a few contributions from producers Charles Stepney and Richard Evans – and the package features 42 wonderful tracks – including "Fonky Thang Diamon Ring" by The Dells, "Windmills Of Your Mind" by Dorothy Ashby, "I Am The Black Gold Of The Sun" by Rotary Connection, "Jelly Jam" by Jack McDuff, "The Getaway" by Alvin Cash, "In My Body's House" by Gene Chandler, "Cross Country" by Archie Whitewater, "Memory Band" by Rotary Connection, "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" by Jimmy Ponder, "Inside Out" by American Gypsy, "Go Go Power" by Sugar Pie DeSanto, "Shake It Up" by The Vibrations, "Up Above The Rock" by Ray Bryant, "Bad Moon Rising" by Bo Diddley, "Shoo Be Doo Be Doo Be Do Da Day" by Eddie Fisher, "Humpin Bumpin & Thumpin" by Andre Williams, "Who Got The Number" by Pigmeat Markham, "Walk On By" by Jo Ann Garrett, "Chocolate Candy" by Soulful Strings, "Got To Get Your Own (7" version)" by Reuben Wilson, "Hanky's Panky (7" version)" by Shirley Scott, "Liberation Conversation" by Marlena Shaw, "Look Of Love" by Monk Higgins, and "Think About It" by Odell Brown & The Organizers. Kapp, 1964. Very Good+ ... $11.99
A key album in the career of Louis Armstrong – one that helped him forge the fourth or fifth great comeback in his career! As you'd guess by the title, the album's built around Louis' hit version of "Hello Dolly" – sung in a mode that at one level stretches back to his roots in trad jazz, but at another kind of peps the whole thing up with a mod 60s/20s retro sort of swing – more syncopated than before, with a choppy little groove that pushed Louis right back onto the charts. Backing is by a small group that includes Billy Kyle on piano, Arvell Shaw on bass, and Joe Darensbourg on clarinet – and the album's filled with other great numbers that include "A Kiss To Build A Dream On", "Moon River", "You Are Woman I Am Man", "Blueberry Hill", and "Be My Life's Companion". Plenty of spirit, and plenty of soul – a 70s classic from organist Doug Carn, and a record that took his instrument, and jazz in general, to a whole new level for the decade! Carn's got this burning, righteous quality on his keys – a vibe that certainly owes something to Larry Young, but also takes off even further – working in a spiritual ensemble that also features his wife Jean Carn on vocals – sounding way more like a righteous jazz singer than on her later soul sides for Philly International! Other players are great, too – and include Charles Tolliver on flugelhorn, Garnett Brown on trombone, George Harper on tenor and soprano sax, Buster Williams on bass, and Alphonse Mouzon on drums. An incredible late-life chapter from trombonist Phil Ranelin – a musician who first flourished on the Detroit scene of the 70s, as part of the Tribe Records underground in that city – and one who dropped off the radar of most folks until a huge revival in the past two decades, spurred on by new interest in his classic recordings! Ranelin got a chance to work elsewhere during this stretch, but his greatest champions may well have been the Wide Hive label – who not only gave Phil new access to the studio, and exposure to a much wider audience than before – but also allowed him to create in some of the larger ensemble modes that were always his strongest suit! One of the postwar space-age classics! The normally-sleepy chorus of Walter Schumann is used to create the backdrop for a narrative of space flight – read by Paul Frees, and involving the takeoff of a rocket from the Pacific, soaring into space, past the moon, and arriving on Venus. The voices drift in and out of the mix, louder and softer while Frees reads from the script for the album. The orchestrations are by Leith Stevens, best known for his jazzy soundtrack work, but sounding pretty great here, and providing a perfect spooky accompaniment to the voices and reading. The album's actually a classic collection of work from the early years of Gil Scott-Heron at the Flying Dutchman label – a time when he was recording some of his most impressively righteous material ever – a hip mix of protest poetry and sweet jazzy numbers – played with great keyboard accompaniment from frequent partner Brian Jackson on keyboards on nearly every track – plus help from Hubert Laws on flute and sax, and Bernard Purdie on drums. Nearly all the famous classics by Gil are here, and the titles include some of Gil's best jazz funk groovers, including "Pieces Of A Man", "Lady Day & John Coltrane", "Home Is Where The Hatred Is", "Save The Children", "Sex Education Ghetto Style", "Whitey On The Moon", "Did You Hear What They Said", The Revolution Will Not Be Televised", and "No Knock". Plus, this CD edition adds in 9 more bonus tracks – including "Free Fall", "I Think I'll Call It Morning", "When You Are Who You Are", "Who'll Pay For Reparations On My Soul", "Speed Kills", "Paint It Black", "The Middle Of Your Day", "Free Will", "Or Down You Fall", and "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised (first version)". Mr Bongo (UK), 2020. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $26.99 28.98
A really amazing step forward for Matthew Tavares and Leland Whitty – two musicians best known as founders of BADBADNOTGOOD – but emerging here in an even more mature blend of jazz and larger instrumental ideas! The record mixes core solo voices with some larger touches here and there – shifting effortlessly between focus and scape, with the subtle majesty of similar Brazilian efforts from the 70s – lofty, but never too full of itself – sophisticated, but very down to earth! Tavares plays guitar and piano, Whitty handles saxes and flute – alongside bass, drums, and some nice larger strings, used very lightly, and in all the right ways. Titles include "Blue", "Symbols Of Transformation", "Visions Of You", "Heat Of The Moon", "Black Magic", "Living Water Assembly", and "Eyes". LP, Vinyl record album

Cultures Of Soul, 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 2LP ... $22.99 28.98
Way more than just a random jazz compilation – and instead a set that comes with a hefty book about the Boston jazz underground in the 70s – almost 80 pages in length, complete with images of records, vintage photos, and lots of notes on this under-documented scene! And while Boston's always been something of a hotbed of jazz activity – thanks to the younger students who hit the city to study at Berklee and other schools – this material represents a much deeper, more spiritual current of jazz – work that's in the same territory of the AACM or loft jazz scenes of the period, but also with a current of freewheeling electric material too! At this price, the whole thing would already be great as a collection of rare spiritual jazz, but with the book and overall package it's a hell of a deal – packed with musical goodness on cuts that include "Sketch (parts 1 & 2)" and "Road Through The Wall (parts 2 & 3)" by Thing, "For Margot" and "Tarot The Moon" by Mark Harvey Group, "The Creator Is So Far Out" and "Egypt" by Phil Musra Group, "9 Degrees Black Women Liberation" by Worlds, "Year Of The Ear Herds & Hoards" by Baird Hersey with Dave Liebman, and "Play Sleep" by Stanton Davis' Ghetto Mysticism. Cameo/Cicadelic, 1966. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The west coast had The Seeds, and the east coast had The Deep – a group known only for this one album, but a key garage psych group nonetheless! This record's a gem through and through – oddly (almost mistakenly) issued on the mostly-pop Cameo label in the mid 60s, but recorded with a fantastic studio technique that has lots of odd electronics and sound effects sneaking in alongside the fuzzy guitars and earthy vocals. The band were mostly a studio project between Rusy Evans and Mark Barkan of Freak Scene, and also features work by a young David Bromberg – and although they've only left this one record to their legacy, it's a heck of a great album to leave! Titles include "Color Dreams", "Pink Ether", "Turned On", "When Rain Is Black", "Psychedelic Moon", "Shadows On The Wall", "Trip #76", and "On Off Off On". 18 tracks in all. CD

The music here is pulled from Ranelin's albums for Wide Hive, but also includes a few new tracks too – and musicians include Pharoah Sanders on tenor, Zane Musa on alto and tenor, Kamasi Washington on tenor, Roger Glenn on vibes, Danny Grissett on piano, Nate Morgan on piano, Henry Franklin on bass, Calvin Keys on guitar, Big Black on congas, and Donald Bailey on drums. A key early appearance on record by Sonny Rollins – recorded here with Miles Davis and Jackie McLean in the landmark Dig session! The album's the stuff that 50s bop dreams are made of – a session that has up-and-coming modernists working in the new freedom of the long playing record, in a way that allows them to break past the shorter, more urgent sound of the 78rpm single! Rollins is young, but a surprisingly strong voice on the set – and Jackie McLean's alto is incredibly sharp at this point, with strong hints of the genius to come later in the decade. The rest of the lineup includes Walter Bishop on piano, Tommy Potter on bass, and Art Blakey on drums – and tracks include Miles' classic version of "It's Only A Paper Moon", plus "Denial", "Out Of The Blue", "Dig", and "Bluing". Rare Sun Ra – so much so, it's falling off the reel – but also fortunately nicely resurrected here by the folks at Transparency, who've been doing a great job of unearthing obscure Arkestra performances from the group's best years! This album dates from 1973, and comes from a Gibus performance in Paris – one that features the group moving between some fierce, free, avant-styled work – and some more spiritual moments that are very much in the best Space Is The Place vintage! As part of that latter half, vocals figure in nicely at a few spots – sung by June Tyson, Ruth Wright, Cheryl Banks, and Judith Holton – and the core group features John Gilmore on tenor, Marshall Allen on alto and flute, Danny Ray Thompson on baritone and flute, Danny Davis on alto and alto clarinet, James Jacson on bassoon and flute, Eloe Omoe on bass clarinet and flute, Kwami Hadi and Akh Tal Ebah on trumpets – a very horn-heavy lineup that sounds great here. A fantastic look at the legendary Bristol recording sessions from the late 20s – a set of recordings that are often billed as the "big bang" of country music – given that they helped discover Jimmie Rogers and the Carter Family – and began a huge wave of old time recordings that would forever change the face of American music! Bear Family issued a complete collection of the Bristol sessions years back, but this slimmer package is a great look at the huge amount of music captured by producer Ralph Peer – packaged here with a new set of notes and a long essay based on new historical detail – which almost makes the collection essential if you own the box set. But we're guessing you don't, and this CD is a great place to witness the glory of the world of music in eastern Tennessee and western Virginia – fantastic singers and musicians who flocked to Bristol in droves, just to get a chance to record their musical messages. 26 tracks in all – with titles that include "We Shall All Be Reunited" by Alfred G Karnes, "New Orleans Is The Town I Like Best" by Carolina Twins, "We'll Sing On That Shore" by The Palmer Sisters, "My Mother Is Waiting For Me In Heaven Above" by Smith Brothers, "My Name Is Ticklish Reuben" by Smyth County Ramblers, "Standing On The Promises" by Tennessee Mountaineers, "Your Blue Eyes Run Me Crazy" by West Virginia Coon Hunters, "Susanna Gal" by Dad Blackard's Moonshiners, "I'm Redeemed" by Alcoa Quartet, "Black Eyed Susie" by JP Nester, "The Soldier's Poor Little Boy" by The Johnson Brothers, and "Wreck Of The Virginian (take 2)" by Blind Alfred Reed. Great early work from Sun Ra & The Arkestra – two never-issued tracks, and a classic Saturn Records groove! "Rocket Number Nine" may well be one of the group's strongest early anthems – a propulsive number that's bold enough to soar to the skies – driven by old school snapping snare, but given a very moody vibe by the group's chanting, and some very offbeat horn solos! "Ankhnation" is a never-issued track – one that has a great mix of comping chords from Ra on piano and right rhythm lines – with lots of nice solos over the top from John Gilmore, Pat Patrick, and Hobart Dotson – almost a Yusef Lateef track overall. Last up is the previously-unissued "Project Black Mass" – a tune that has all these cool percussion bits and piano notes in a flurry – almost a more outside take on the style of Moondog! Cotillion/Wounded Bird, 1970/1971. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Two Cotillion classics from Screaming Lord Sutch – back to back on a single CD! First up is Lord Sutch & Heavy Friends – an album that's almost equally well-known for its work by a host of famous guests – including Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, John Bonham, and others! Page is perhaps the most involved here – as he produced the set with Sutch, co-wrote some tracks, and plays some mighty searing guitar – as does Beck, which makes the album almost worth it alone for all the wonderful solos! But Sutch himself is pretty great too – kind of a mish-mash of late 60s nasty camp references, with the same sinister vibe as Kim Fowley – and an equally freewheeling approach to a tune that makes the album a heck of a lot of fun. Titles include "Gutty Guitar", "Flashing Lights", "Wailing Sounds", "Thumping Beat", "Union Jack Car", and "London". Hands Of Jack The Ripper is filled with weird and wild sounds from Screaming Lord Sutch – and a set that has as many "heavy friends" at play as his better-known previous album for Cotillion! As with that set, the vibe here is an odd mix of older beat group styles from mid 60s London, but filtered through a generation that's already bursting out with hard rock, psych, and prog inspiration – which means any nod towards older rock and soul roots come out sounding very offbeat in the end! Players include Ritchie Blackmore on lead guitar, Keith Moon on drums, and Noel Redding on bass – and titles include "Country Club", "Great Balls Of Fire", "Bye Bye Johnny/Johnny B Goode", "Gotta Keep A Rocking", and "Hands Of Jack The Ripper", which is mini-horror movie itself! Grapefruit (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 3 CDs ... Out Of Stock
British folk music got really weird and wonderful at the end of the 60s – light years from the crew cut versions of The Kingston Trio, or the twangy modes of Bob Dylan wannabees – but also very different from the more rockish directions that American folk acts were taking at the time! If anything, the British artists showed an even deeper commitment to acoustic modes – and far more ancient ones than American groups had access too – a thousand year legacy of British Isles music, but reworked into an often-trippy style would find more famous iterations in groups from Fairport Convention through Current 93, and even in the Wicker Man soundtrack as well! Most of the music here is much more obscure than those references – groups that were big in the UK, but maybe didn't have as much of an impact over here during the period – which makes this 63 track box set a real treasure trove of discovery – filled with many tunes we'd never heard before, and put together in a very special way. Titles include "Black Girl" by Mary Anne, "Till The Morning Comes" by Dando Shaft, "Roses For Columbus" by Mark Frhy, "Love Is A Funny Thing" by Spyrogyra, "Come All You Travellers" by Wight, "Willow's Song" by Nagnet, "Cruious Crystals Of Unusual Purity" by Bridget St John, "Prisoners Victims Strangers Friends" by Paper Bubble, "Gabilan" by Duncan Browne, "Meeting By The Moonlight Mill" by Dry Heart, "Silence Returns" by Beau, "Me & My Kite" by Fuschia, "The Colour Is Blue" by Country Sun, "Welcome To The Citadel" by Marc Brierley, "Garden Song (demo)" by Bill Fay, and "Upon Reflection" by Heron. Don Cherry really breaks out here on his classic Mu sessions from France – using the new freedoms of post-68 Paris to explore themes at a level that would set the tone for generations to come! The album's very spare, and very improvised – with Cherry on pocket trumpet, piano, and wooden flute – plus a bit of percussion too – alongside drummer Ed Blackwell, who's equally unbridled – showing a huge evolution since the time both he and Don spent in the group of Ornette Coleman! There's a few echoes of the global elements that Cherry would later embrace more strongly in the 70s – but the core energy here is mostly improvised jazz, handled at a level that really makes a lot better use of the freedom than some of Don's contemporaries. One of the coolest new groups we've heard on Daptone in a long time – an instrumental combo that's definitely funky, but which has some of the exotic touches you might expect from their name! There's a nice current of strings that slide in alongside more familiar funk instrumentation – some violins, cellos, and even a harp – used to give the groove this expansive vibe that's partly blacksploitation soundtrack, but much more than that as well! Now Again, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
An overdue look at the lost Lamp Records – a crucially important indie soul label on the Indy scene of the late 60s and early 70s – a company that was never as big as Chess or Motown, but did a similar job of documenting its city's musical scene! Indianapolis was always a very diverse city – and gave the world bigger funk and jazz luminaries like Wes Montgomery or Funk Inc – but like most cities of its size, Indy also sported a rich underground of great singers and bands who were really trying to make it big – all really great artists who were captured in deep detail by the Lamp Records label! Now Again/Stones Throw have given us a slight look at this scene in the past – most notably with their reissues of work by Ebony Rhythm Band – but this is the first really detailed dig into the label, with a huge amount of material that's only ever circulated on very rare original pressings. The work is a great mix of group soul, funky cuts, sweet harmony, and even a bit of gospel – and titles on this 2LP set include "Somebody Please" by The Vanguards, "You Made My Everything" by Words Of Wisdom Truth Revue, "Hum Bug" by Diplomatics, "I Didn't Know" by Funder Cooper, "Go To Work" by Revolution Compared To What, "Everybody Who Wants To Be Free" by Amnesty, "Can I Call You Baby" by The Pearls, "Take Me" by Fabulous Souls, "High On The Hill" by Squidd, "Soul Heart Transplant" by Ebony Rhythm Band, "See The Lord" by Mighty Indiana Travelers, "Huh" by Tony Black & Revolution Compared To What, "I'm Only Human" by Embers, "It Swells My Desire" by The PHDs, and "More Than I Can Stand" by Moonlighters. Al Dente (France), 2015. Used ... $7.99
A great new showcase for the music of Alex Puddu – the contemporary groover who's given us some wonderful music over the years – including his famous Golden Age Of Danish Pornography sets! This album's more of a back-to-basics affair for Puddu – recorded with a tight combo, and a very classic approach to mod jazz and funk – performed by a group that's very heavy on keyboards alongside sweet riffing guitar from Alex! The sound is tight, but never too smooth – and there's a few additional horns thrown into the mix, to augment the top end alongside the guitar, clavinet, Hammond, and Fender Rhodes – all with a sweet blend that's almost got a 70s blacksploitation vibe at times, but a bit looser and more spontaneous too. Puddu wrote, arranged, and produced – and most cuts are instrumental, but a few feature vocals from singer Duane Hobson. Titles include "Sexy Lady", "You Got Me Funky", "Such A Bad Girl", "Black Sugar", "Love Rollercoaster", "Losing My Mind", and "Feel The Heat". CD

Charles EarlandCharles Earland In Concert Live At The Lighthouse/Kharma ... CD
Prestige, 1972/1974. New Copy ... $13.99 14.98
A great set that brings together 2 live albums from organist Charles Earland! Live At The Lighthouse is a real killer – with that tight jazzy groove that Earland had on his first few albums for Prestige, a mix of jazz funk and soul jazz, handled with an incredible touch on the organ! The band includes lesser known players like trumpeter Elmer Coles, alto player James Vass, and conga player Kenneth Nash – but they all groove very tightly, and provide a perfect foil for Earland's soaring solos. Includes a great version of "Moontrane", plus the groovers "Spinky", "Smiling", and "Black Gun". Kharma is a spiritual live set recorded at the 1974 Montreux festival, and one that has Earland opening into the freer sound that dominated his playing during the mid 70's – with lots of modal grooves, and those long soulful leaps that made his solos always so great! Jon Faddis, Clifford Adams, and Dave Hubbard are in the lineup, and tracks include "Morgan", "Kharma", and his "Suite for Martin Luther King". 11 tracks in all! CD

Prestige, 1972. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
A real killer from Hammond hero Charles Earland – a record that stretches out as much as his studio gems for Prestige, but in a slightly different way! LP, Vinyl record album

Oscar PetersonPastel Moods ... LP
Verve, Early 50s. Very Good ... $16.99
We couldn't think of a better title for this one – as Oscar's in perfect form, crafting lightly shaded tones on the keys – and working with the guitar/bass drumless trio format that made his work so fluid in the 50s. The album's as seductive as its title and beautiful cover, and Oscar performs wonderfully on tunes that include "You Go To My Head", "My Old Flame", "Angel Eyes", "Unforgettable", "Moonglow", and "I Can't Get Started". LP, Vinyl record album
(Black label pressing with deep groove. Cover has a split top seam, a half split spine, and light staining on the back.)

Don ShinnDepartures (180 gram vinyl with bonus 7 inch) (2020 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Columbia/Sunbeam (UK), 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $34.99
A fantastic album from Don Shinn – a little-remembered British organist from the 60s, and one who cut this gem of a record for the legendary Lansdowne series of Columbia Records – home to rare gems by Joe Harriott, Stan Tracey, and other important UK jazz contemporaries! The album features four long tracks – each with Shinn's lines on organ spun out in a way that's freewheeling, but never too free – almost Jack McDuff/Moonrappin territory, but with other elements in the mix – handled by three more players that include the great Stan Tracey on piano, celeste, vibes, and marimba – plus Trevor Tomkins on drums and Barry Morgan on percussion. The mix of percussion and organ is tremendous – and Shinn's got this way of playing these wide waves of sound that are completely captivating – on the tunes "Bossa-Wards", "Space-Wards", "H VIII-Wards", and "Departure IV". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Maynard FergusonBoy With Lots Of Brass ... LP
Mercury, 1957. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
There's definitely lots of brass here – as you might guess from the title – but never so much so that it gets in the way of individual soloing by Maynard Ferguson! The date features Maynard working with arrangements by Willie Maiden, Al Cohn, Ernie Wilkins, and Bill Holman – all for a largeish group that's wonderfully hip – Bobby Timmons on piano, Anthony Ortega on alto, Jimmy Ford on alto and tenor, Willie Maiden on tenor, Tate Houston on baritone, Richard Evans on bass, and Larry Bunker on drums – plus some added trumpets and trombones! Maynard himself plays both instruments on the date, and the album also feature some surprising guest vocals by Irene Kral on 4 tracks – spicing up the instrumental blend with lyrics on "Moonlight In Vermont", "I Hadn't Anyone Till You", "Imagination", and "The Song Is You". Instrumental tracks include "Jeepers Creepers", "I Never Knew", "A Foggy Day", "Love Me Or Leave Me", and "The Lamp Is Low". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono black label pressing with deep groove. Cover and label has a drillhole through the center.)

✨✧ RaekwonOnly Built 4 Cuban Linx Pt 2 ... CD
IHR/EMI, 2009. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The long awaited Cuban Linx Pt 2 from Raekwon – and one of those late model Wu Tang efforts that reminds us of how vital the Wu Tang were in their prime, as well as how sharp the still are when the moons align and the pieces fall into place! OBFCL Pt 2 is indeed one of those rare newer Wu sets that stands up proudly with the first wave. Sure, it's might not be an eternal classic, but the best stuff here is incredible. Rugged & raw, with intricate crack game noir from a master. 22 tracks in all: the bone chilling J Dilla beat backed gem "House Of Flying Daggers" feat Inspectah Deck, Ghostface and Meth, "Sonny's Missing" (produced by Pete Rock), "Cold Outside" feat Ghostface, "Black Mozart" feat RZA & Inspectah Deck, "Catalina" feat Lyfe Jennings and "About Me" (both produced by Dr Dre), "We Will Rob You" feat Slick Rick, Masta Killa & GZA, "Kiss The Ring" feat Inspectah Deck & Masta Killa, "10 Bricks" feat Cappadonna & Ghostface and many more. Colemine, 2010s. New Copy 3LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Fantastic funk from the Colemine label – a company who've given us plenty of great albums over the years, but who seem especially well-tuned to the funky 45! Along with Daptone, Big Crown, and a few others, Colemine is one of the labels who turn out top-shelf 7" singles again and again – most of which are in limited pressings, disappear fast, and are sometimes pretty expensive if you can find them! This set corrects that issue, and brings together 27 nuggets that originally appeared as funky 45s – all stacked together nicely as a massive LP set, with a nice price break from trying to track down the singles. Titles include "Gripsweats Them" by The Gripsweats, "Don't You Know" by Durand Jones & The Indications, "NUSAU" by Jungle Fire, "Supermoon" by Ikebe Shakedown, "What A Shame" by Jr Thomas & The Volcanos, "War Room" by Black Market Brass, "Aragon" by Sure Fire Soul Ensemble, "My God Has A Telephone" by Flying Stars Of Brooklyn, "He's On Time" by Harlem Gospel Travelers, "Happiness" by Wesley Bright & The Honeytones, "It Was Only A Dream" by Thee Sinseers, "America" by Soul Scratch, and "Sure Don't Miss You" by The Dip. ✨✧ Bob DylanFallen Angels ... CD
Columbia, 2016. Used ... Out Of Stock
Bob Dylan and his incomparable band take on old school pop standards for the second album in a row – and it's a real charmer! Fallen Angels has a lot in common with the preceding Strangers In The Night, as they're again taking on songs recorded by, and in some cases popularized by Sinatra, but this one goes a bit deeper into the classic American songbook – and it's all the better for it. Dylan's reputation as a songwriter is borderline biblical, while his reputation as a conventionally gifted singer is, well...something else – so there's a sly allurement here that's not lost on the headliner. He's paying earnest tribute to the songs themselves – which in the course of pop history have been overshadowed by the voices singing them – and on that front, it's masterful! Still, Dylan's raspy croon is pretty darn charismatic itself on this material, making it another late career gem. Longtime Dylan players Charlie Sexton, Stu Kimball, Tony Garnier, George Recile and Donnie Herron make the instrumental magic happen, along with newer Dylan player (though longtime session guitar ace) Dean Parks – but extra credit to Herron, whose steel guitar sound makes it extra special. Includes "Young At Heart", "Maybe You'll Be There", "Polka Dots & Moonbeams", "All The Way", "Skylark", "Nevertheless", "All Or Nothing At All", "It Had To Be You", "Melancholy Mood", "That Old Black Magic" and "Come Rain Or Come Shine".
