✨✧ Serge ChaloffFable Of Mabel (Black Lion) ... CD
Black Lion, 1954. Used ... Out Of Stock
Very hip work from the Boston modern scene of the mid 50s! The album's one of Serge Chaloff's few as a leader – and is much harder to find than his more widely-issued work for Capitol – an obscure date for the Storyville label, and one that originally only circulated as a 10" LP! The set's also unusual in that it features Serge at the head of a nonet – with strong players that include Charlie Mariano on alto, Herb Pomeroy on trumpet, and Dick Twardzik on piano – all working wonderfully with Chaloff in a groove that's sharply modern, but also plenty darn swinging! There's a strong dose of Boston soul in the mix here, thanks to contributions from the horn players – and the album's got a freshness that's a nice contrast to Serge's more familiar work at Capitol. Titles include originals like "Sherry", "Slam", "A Salute To Tiny", and "Ennie Meenie Minor Mode" – written by group members Mariano and Twardzik! Includes 5 alternate takes. CD

✨✧ Thelonious MonkComplete Black Lion & Vogue Recordings Of Thelonious Monk (4LP Box Set) ... LP
Mosaic, 1954/1971. Near Mint- 4LP Box Set ... Out Of Stock
Seminal lost work by Monk! This great 4LP set brings together 11 rare French solo recordings from 1954, and a whopping batch of trio material from 1971, recordings that were some of the last great ones that Monk did in his all-too-short life. Record one of the set features material that was originally issued on Vogue records in Paris, and titles include "Jackie-ing", "Well, You Needn't", "Round Midnight", "Off Minor", "Eronel", "Manganese", and the previously unissued "Meet Me Tonight In Dreamland". The other three albums feature late Black Lion recordings from 1971 – seminal stuff, as Monk was hardly being taken seriously by other labels at the time, and had walked away from his relationship with Columbia after they were pushing him to do more pop material. The sessions feature Monk solo on about half the tracks, then in a trio with Art Blakey on drums and Al McKibbon on bass (basically the core group of the legendary Giants Of Jazz recording on Atlantic, also done in London around the same time.) Way too many cuts to mention, but we can say that those sessions also include a number of unissued tracks. LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes the booklet. Box has some aging on back, looks great otherwise!)

✨✧ Lee Perry & The UpsettersRoaring Lion – 16 Untamed Black Art Masters & Dub Plates ... CD
Pressure Sounds (UK), 1970s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Booming dubs from Lee Perry and his Upsetters – masters and dub plates from the Black Ark archives – prime unreleased material put together by Pressure Sounds! Roaring Lion has 16 tracks, 11 of which are from one mastertape full of top shelf dubs, and the other 5 are heretofore unreleased alternate mixes and dub plates of prime period material. Fantastic stuff in the quintessential Black Ark style – right up there with the Lee Perry & The The Upsetters more famous material of the era – heavy, bouncing bass, hazy atmosphere, tricked out bits of melodica and other atmospheric washes of sound – plus some soul-steeped vocals in the mix, too. Includes "Truth And Rights", "Roaring Lion" and "Gerneration From Creation" by Jah Lion & The Upsetters, "Loco Negril" by Althea And Donna, "Pride" by Augustus Pablo & The Upsetters", "Upsetters Shuffle", "Big Gal Sally", "Big Boy Wally", "Rocky Road Dub", "Anasawa Dub", "Dub Dyon", "Emotional Dub", "Dub Stand" and more. ✨✧ IndexOriginals Vol 1 – 1967 to 1968 (Red Album/Black Album) ... LP
Lion, 1967/1968. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A great little package that brings together the first two rare albums by Index – a group that started as a cover band in the suburbs of Detroit in the late 60s, but quickly found their way to some tremendous music of their own! The trio's got a style that's jamming and trippy at the same time – romping drums, surprisingly deft guitar work, and some muted lyrics that echo some of the darkness in the instrumentation – even though the group seem to often be comfortable without any vocals at all! The songs here are all their own, and come from their Red Album and Black Album – newly remastered from the original tales, with titles that include "Turquoise Feline", "Feedback", "Rainy Starless Nights", "Break Out", "Paradise Beach", "Shock Waves", "Israeli Blues", and "Fire Eyes". Barney KesselBlue Soul (plus Swinging Easy) (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Black Lion/Muzak (Japan), 1968. New Copy 2CDs ... $24.99
A pair of late 60s gems from guitarist Barney Kessel – both of which came from the same string of sessions! First up is Blue Soul – a very groovy set from guitarist Barney Kessel – very different than some of his cleaner, smoother-toned work of the 50s! The album was partly recorded in London, and partly recorded in LA – and there's a really nice mix of modes going on, which includes strong use of organ at times – bringing a soul jazz vibe to the record, which Barney seems to match with an extra sort of rasp in his strings – this nice bite that really sets the record apart from some of his others! There's also great use of electric bass, very strong at a few points, with a nice kick in the rhythms that's kind of unexpected for a record from Kessel – as you'll groove to on titles that include "Blue Soul", "Stumblin Around", "Comin Home", "Quail Bait", "Shufflin", and "Frank Mills". Swinging Easy is really nice work from guitarist Barney Kessel – one of his overlooked late 60s sessions from a time when the musician was really opening up his sound! Barney's working with a British trio here – John Marshall on drums and Kenny Napper on bass – and there's a nice sense of tone that carries forward his 50s modes, but which also maybe has a bit more of a bite, too. The mix is a great one, and titles include "On A Clear Day", "The Look Of Love", "Corcovado", "Aquarius", "Watch The Birds Go By", and "I Will Wait For You". CD
(Great paper sleeve package, too!)

Black Lion, 1969. Near Mint- ... $6.99
An album that has European jazz great Stephane Grapelli revising the format of his legendary Hot Club Of France with guitarist Django Reinhardt – but in a very different mode, given that this group features electric guitar from Barney Kessel! Kessel is great, and his warm, round tones do very little to change things up from his usual groove – but the setting is definitely a fresh one for Barney, given that the combo features rhythm guitar from Nini Rosso, and sweetly-crafted violin lines from Grappelli! The rest of the group features Michel Gaudry on bass and Jean-Louis Viale on drums. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Charles TolliverCharles Tolliver & His All Stars (aka Paper Man) ... LP
Black Lion (UK), 1968. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
The first moment of genius from trumpeter Charles Tolliver – a set that wasn't originally issued on the Strata East label, but which really set the tone for all the genius to follow on Tolliver's label! At the time of the record, Charles was part of a whole new generation of hardboppers who were coming up in a world of new ideas – a time when Coltrane, Shepp, and Ayler were transforming the left side of jazz – while other musicians were pushing the boundaries of more familiar modes too. Tolliver worked with Horace Silver, Max Roach, and others at the time – and here, he's a brilliant leader right out of the box – set up with an all-star combo that features Herbie Hancock on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Joe Chambers on drums – perfect partners for exploring the new music that Charles brings to the record. Gary Bartz joins the group on the second half – another young player about to transform a generation – and the whole album's a dream all the way through, with the mix of soul and spirit of some of Woody Shaw's first records, or maybe Bartz's first few albums for Milestone. Titles are all Tolliver originals – and include "Household Of Saud", "Earl's World", "Paper Man", "Lil's Paradise", and "Right Now". LP, Vinyl record album

A really great package – one that brings together three different albums on the Black Lion label, all of which were recorded during the same live sessions at the Cafe Montmartre in Copenhagen! Ben Webster's tone is wonderful here – that mature, mellow sound that he brought to some of his standout live dates – and which is captured here in the kind of relaxed, soloist-focused setting that always makes 60s recordings from the Cafe Montmartre so great! The group is a familiar one for the house – Kenny Drew on piano, Nils Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass, and Alex Riel on drums – but it's clear that Ben's the main star, and steps out on the kind of tenor solos really set him apart from the rest – on a record that's also one of his best from the decade! 2CD set features 21 tracks in all – and titles include "I Can't Get Started", "Londonderry Air", "My Romance", "Misty", "That's All", "Yesterdays", "Perdido", "Teach Me Tonight", "Friskin The Frog", "Stormy Weather", and "Blues For Herluf". A great little package – one that presents the full scope of music that was issued over the course of three different albums by the Black Lion label – but all recorded together during two nights in 1967! The set features Dexter Gordon at his European best – working at his very familiar haunt, the Cafe Montmartre in Copenhagen – a city that welcome Dexter Gordon with welcome arms in the 60s, as Dex left America to take care of himself and renew his energy overseas – expanding his sound and styles in ways that made him a much more revolutionary tenorist than during his earlier time on the US scene! The group features Kenny Drew on piano, Niels Henning Orsted Pederson on bass, and Albert Tootie Heath on drums – and titles include "Blues Walk", "Sonny Moon For Two", "Devilette", "Doxy", "But Not For Me", "Misty", "Come Rain Or Come Shine", "Like Someone In Love", "Love For Sale", and "Body & Soul". An expanded version of this famous series of recordings – originally issued on two different records by the Black Lion label, and expanded here with bonus material! The record's n astounding live set from Johnny Griffin – recorded at the famous Club Montmartre in Copenhagen, Dexter Gordon's famous home in the late 60s – but a place that was also a showcase for the new sort of energy that Griffin was bringing to his horn at the time! The record crackles with the kind of free energy of the best Montmartre sessions – long tracks and compelling solos, stretched-out versions of tunes you may recognize, but which are transformed nicely by Griff's great solo work – and by a rhythm section that features Kenny Drew on piano, Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass, and Albert Heath on drums! Titles include "The Man I Love", "Blues For Harvey", "Indiana", "Old Folks", "You Leave Me Breathless", "Night In Tunisia", "Leave Me Alone Blues", "All The Things You Are", "The Masquerade Is Over", "Sophisticated Lady", "Hush A Bye", and "Wee". CultureTwo Sevens Clash – 30th Anniversary Edition ... CD
Shanachie, 1977. Used ... $6.99
Essential! The mighty debut album from African disciples Culture pairing up with the Mighty Two, Joe Gibbs and Errol Thompson is one of the landmark sets of roots reggae, a defining moment of the genre dropped during the year when two sevens clashed. And though the apocalypse didn't rain down from the skies in '77, this album was certainly a world-changing event, one of the finest moments in Kingston's rich musical history! Gibbs provides the trio with a set of uplifting rhythms over which to harmonize, and Culture comes correct on every track, combining a tightly harmonized approach with a rawer, rootsier sound. This 30th anniversary edition combines the 10 tracks of the original LP with 5 bonus numbers, and includes "I'm Alone In The Wilderness", "Pirate Days", "Two Sevens Clash", "Caling Rastafari", "I'm Not Ashamed", 'Get Ready To Ride The Lion To Zion", "Black Starliner Must Come", "Jah Pretty Face", 'See Them A Come", "Natty Dread Taking Over", "See Dem A Come (12" mix w/Prince Weedy)", "See Dem Dub", "Natty Dread Taking OVer (12" mix w/I Roy), "I'm Not Ashamed (12" mix w/I Roy)" and "Not Ashamed Dub". ✨✧ VariousAyahuasca – Cumbias Psicodelicas Vol 1 ... LP
Lion, Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A totally cool collection of unusual cumbia cuts from 70s Peru – music that definitely earns the psychedelic tag promised in the title, given its heavy use of electric guitars and trippy production! The style here is different than more familiar cumbia from Colombia – rooted in the rhythmic approach, but taken to really new territory by the artists on the set – some of whom were likely garage and psych combos, able to turn their style towards the new groove of the time! Many of the tracks are instrumentals – which furthers their unusual feel, as the vibe is almost like some unusual Latin take on surf music – and titles include "La Negrita" by Los Blancaguay, "Bongocero" by Los Telstars, "Sueno Magico" by The Black Cats, "Soul Finger" by Los Escaramujos, "Marihuana" by Los Darlings De Huanuco, "Je T'Aime Moi Non Plus" by Santanita, "Cuarto Oscuro" by Los Zheros, and "Las Oleadas" by Ranil Y Su Conjunto. Lion, 1969. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Rare tracks from this obscure Detroit combo of the 60s – stripped down here to a trio lineup, which gives the music a really lean, clean focus that sounds years ahead of its time! The group definitely have their ears turned towards the psych side of the spectrum – but often mix fuzzy guitars and moody production with tighter drums and sharp songwriting – all on tunes that are never too indulgent, and which often have this vibe that could be coming more from the American underground of the early 80s, instead of the Motor City at a time when many other groups were gaining fame. The tracks here were all found on tapes many years after recording – and provide a great counterpart to the group's Red and Black albums – with titles that include "It's All In Your Mind", "Street Crime", "I Walk Alone", "Tired Of Being Told", "Be My Friend", "Yesterday & Today", "Don't You Know", "Kick It Out", "431 Lakeshore", and "Livin In Detroit". Enigmatic sounds from UK reedman Lol Coxhill – a really cool collaboration with Morgan Fisher – who adds in his own tape manipulation, guitar, and piano next to Coxhill's work on soprano sax – plus a bit of carillion too! The style's even more spacey and laidback than Lol's 70s duets with Steven Miller – but has a similarly hypnotic quality – proof that Coxhill was always trying to go way beyond jazz, and way beyond some of the standard free modes of his contemporaries – always interested in shaping sounds to new ends – with fascinating results that make the album a corker! Fantasy/OJC, 1962. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A beautiful record of light, lyrical piano jazz – and one of the best-selling jazz albums ever on Fantasy Records! Vince Guaraldi started the set as a tribute to the film Black Orpheus – and some of the album features his nice renditions of Jobim/Bonfa tunes like "Manha De Carnaval" and "Samba De Orpheus". However, Guaraldi also managed to pen his own amazing track – "Cast Your Fate To The Wind" – a lyrical romping piano instrumental that went onto become a huge charting instrumental hit during the 60s. The track's been heard a million times over the years, but it's still pretty darn great – and it's surrounded in a nice set with other tunes that have the same feel – including "O Nosso Amour", "Alma-Ville", "Since I Fell For You", and "Moon River". Ebony Sound/P-Vine (Japan), 1972. New Copy ... $16.99
A masterpiece of east coast vocal group soul – one of the best independent harmony albums of the early 70s! Soul Generation had a fantastic approach – a style that was both sweet and tough at the same time, done with slight gangster/pimp touches that set them apart from some of the other more fragile groups of their era. The album's produced and arranged to perfection by Stan Vincent – and nearly every single cut on the record is an instant classic. Starts out with the incredible "Super Fine" – one of our favorite harmony tracks of all time – then rolls into "That's The Way It's Got To Be (Body & Soul)", "Black Man", "Black Man", "Million Dollars", and "In Your Way". A fantastic album of dub from the 70s – and one that's got as much mystery on its cover as it's got magic in the grooves! Despite the name of King Tubby on the front, the real genius at the controls is Pat Kelly – who's got a different, but equally wicked way with working up a track – in this case, backing tracks from Bunny Striker Lee, which are given all sorts of cool changes in the snare, echo on the core drum parts, and nicely spacey touches all around the edges – almost outer space dub, of a mode that would come on more strongly a few years later! Pat Kelly claimed a lot of influence from jazz, and you can definitely hear it in the snare – on titles that include "Earth Fear", "Tradition Skank", "Black Out", "Serious Rebellion", "Bad Man Skank", "Was Alive", "Gun Man From Water House", and "Babylon Red". Zack O'Malley Greenburg3 Kings – Diddy, Dr Dre, Jay Z, & Hip Hop's Multibillion Dollar Rise (hardcover) ... Book
Little Brown, 2018. New Copy ... $3.99 28.00
A detailed look at the moment when hip hop went from a sideline to a mainstream force in the music business – a time when producers became executives, major labels allowed smaller boutique imprints, and everybody started making a lot more money on the music! As you'd guess from the title, the book follows the rise of Dr Dre, Jay Z, and Diddy – three of the biggest forces to go from the streets to the boardrooms – but the author also paints a much wider, more vibrant picture too – never too entranced by the stardom of the trio, and instead able to place their success in a longer narrative of hip hop recording, one in which many others never got a piece of the pie. 307 pages, hardcover, with some black and white images. ✨✧ TwinkleGirl In A Million – The Complete Recordings ... CD
RPM (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Groovy Brit girl pop from Twinkle – a singer who shone briefly for a stretch in the 60s, which is when most folks know her songs – but who also recorded some more obscure material in the 70s – which gets included here on a nicely expanded set! Twinkle's got a style that's maybe a bit more dreamy than some of her UK contemporaries – less the brash, proud pop of Cilla Black or Petula Clark than the blue-tinged styles of some of the American girl singers of the time – especially some of those who were best at weepy ballads and songs of loss. Yet Twinkle's also much more of an enigma – as she wrote most of the material herself, and sort of sprung on the scene out of nowhere – with enough personal presence that she's not just another girl singer run through a few changes in the studio. The package features a whopping 43 tracks in all – all of her Decca label recordings, plus more for the Instant and President labels, plus a record producer Mike D'Abo, later 70s material, and even some live tracks too – with titles that include "Micky", "Terry", "Take The Trouble", "For Sale", "Smoochie", "Jane", "Joanna", "Bowden House", "I Am A Woman", "The End Of The World", "Sha La La La Lee", "Days", "Caroline", and "The End Of The World". ✨✧ Rex Allen JrToday's Generation ... LP
SSS, Late 60s. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
A wild mix of late 60s Nashville songcraft and worldly psychedelic country rock from Rex Allen Jr! Rex is the son of the legendary cowboy singer Rex Allen – and later on he carried the old man's wandering western troubadour torch – but this lost record is darker, stranger and groovier than we would have imagined! The weirdness is in the lyricism – Allen sings in a husky smooth baritone about youth rebellion, LSD, Vietnam, the face of mortality and topical concerns of the era – but he approaches it in the straightforward country music tradition. There are no metaphors – the words aren't surreal, they're severe – and we love it! The production is by Steve Singleton, another legacy candidate – his pops helped resurrect Jerry Lee Lewis and handled other left of center, difficult to pigeonhole country classics with Tom T Hall and Charlie Rich. With Rex he provides unfussy, steel accented honky tonk arrangements with trippy washes of organ, harpsichord and mellotron. Almost certainly too tough a tab to dissolve in the culture of its time – way too weird for country, way too country for the weirdos – now's the time to savor this one! Titles include "The Younger Generation", "I Back Up", "The Children", "Other Husbands And Wives", "Home Song (Dreams OF What May Come)", "The Father Needs A Man", "Black Skies", and "The Corners Of My Life". David BowieHeroes (2017 remaster) ... CD
Parlophone, 1977. Used ... $8.99
One of the three great collaborations between David Bowie and Brian Eno – and possibly the ultimate statement from his years in Berlin! The album's got some tunes that still show some of the guitar power of the early 70s Bowie – but it's also got some of the beautiful spacier moments brought forward on Low – and which are every bit the Brian Eno of Aother Green World. The balance is beautiful – stark and dark on one half, then airy and spacious on the next – handled without any sense of gimmickry, and a bold mainstream experiment that still resonates strongly today. Titles include "Beauty & The Beast", "Joe The Lion", "Heroes", "Sons Of The Silent Age", "Blackout", "V-2 Schneider", "Sense Of Doubt", "Moss Garden", "Neukoln", and "The Secret Life Of Arabia". CD

VariousIn-Kraut 3 – Hip Shaking Grooves Made In Germany 1967 to 1974 ... CD
Marina (Germany), Late 60s/Early 70s. Used ... $16.99
The Krauts are at it again – moving and grooving in a hip array of funk and mod styles from the 60s and 70s – most of which are even fuzzier and more upbeat than on previous volumes! The music here is heavy on Hammond, guitar, and romping drums – and a fair bit of tunes have English language too – sometimes sung with a slight German accent, which further enforces the charm of the songs! As before, the whole package is completely top-shelf – filled with obscure German gems we'd never have heard otherwise – and supported with full notes on the music, including track by track details on each tone. Given that there's 20 titles in all on the set, that's a heck of a lot of information – so you'll have plenty to read while listening to groovers that include "Glory Be" by Daisy Clan, "Fever" by Certain Lions & Tigers, "Drift" by Heinz Kiessling, "The Beat Goes On" by Inga, "La Avispa" by The Rainbow Orchestra, "Butterflies Never Cry" by Georgees, "Whole Lotta Love" by Dieter Zimmermann, "My Soul Is Black" by Gene Williams, "High" by Karl Schiller, "Stroke It" by Ingfried Hoffmann, "That's Me Boy" by Memphis Black, and "Hipguard" by Acid. ✨✧ Steve ReidNova (with bonus download) ... LP
Mustevic Sound/Soul Jazz (UK), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
An underground soul jazz classic – massive grooves from drummer Steve Reid, and exactly the kind of set that's gotten him so much attention in recent years! There's a mixture of freedom and tightness here that's really wonderful – some of the looser elements of the loft jazz generation, mixed with an inherent sense of rhythm that always set Reid's records apart from the rest – a groove that comes not just from his own pulsations on the drum kit, but also from the elliptical basslines of Richard Williams on electric and Luis Angel Falcon on acoustic, and the mixed organ and piano lines of keyboardist Les Walker. Joe Rigby brings some really sharp-edged sax work to the record, alongside the trumpet of Ahmed Abdullah, who really sounds wonderful here – bringing a spirituality to the album that's clearly borrowed from his time with Sun Ra. The album includes the great groover "Lions of Judah" – which has a very Ra-like quality – plus other great cuts "Long Time Black", "Sixth House", "Nova", and "Free Spirits Unknown". ✨✧ Link WrayEarly Recordings (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Ace (UK), Mid 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Stunning sounds from the great Link Wray – a guitarist who could make his instrument talk, and sing, and do most anything – as you'll hear on this wicked set of recordings from the 60s! Link got his start during the early rock and roll years – and was a real standout on the instrumental scene – but unlike some of his contemporaries, who faded fast, Link kept getting stronger and going deeper – to a point where the mid 60s music on this collection really blows away his best from just a few years before! Lots of these numbers have that weird slow buzz that Wray created – an obvious precursor to psych, but always honed to a razor-sharp edge by the master – and the CD features the full Early Recordings collection from Ace, plus the Good Rockin Tonight LP – both of which feature rare Swan Records singles, plus unreleased tracks, and material from the Cadence and Vermillion labels too. Titles include Link's wild take on the "Batman Theme" – plus "Zip Code", "Hound Dog", "The Sweeper", "Law Of The Jungle", "The Swag", "Run Boy Run", "Please Please Me", "Rumble", "Mr Guitar", "Deuces Wild", "Mustang", "Run Chicken Run", "The Shadow Knows", "I'm Branded", "Hidden Charms", "Cross Ties", "Turnpike USA", and "The Black Widow". ✨✧ Flying LotusFlamagra ... LP
Warp, 2019. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Fantastic sounds from Flying Lotus – an artist who just keeps on pushing past any conventional expectations, to a point where his music is almost a genre unto itself! The record's got this very tripped-out sort of vibe – very much in keeping with the image on the cover – and while many others are exploring this territory of late, few ever even get close to the right sort of mix that's going on here – subtle elements of soul, funk, jazz, hip hop, and maybe a million other influences – all flowing through the double-length space of the set, as it Flying Lotus redefines the sound of soul in the modern age. The set's got guest work from Thundercat, Shabazz Palaces, David Lynch, George Clinton, Anderson Paak, Little Dragon, Solange, and others – and titles include "Post Requisite", "Takashi", "Spontaneous", "More", "Burning Down The House", "Actually Virtual", "Find Your Own Way Home", "The Climb", "Debbie Is Depressed", "Black BAloons Reprise", and "Land Of Honey". ✨✧ Billy Paul360 Degrees Of Billy Paul/War Of The Gods ... CD
Philadelphia International/Vocalion (UK), 1972/1973. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Two ultra-hip albums from Billy Paul – back to back in a single set! First up is 360 Degrees Of Billy Paul – a record that features Billy Paul at the height of his powers – able to capture the ears of the crossover audience, yet still stay very strongly on message – all with this righteous power that maybe makes Billy one of the hippest mainstream soul stars of the 70s! Gamble & Huff are at the helm, and arrangements at Sigma Sound are by Lenny Pakula, Norman Harris, and Bobby Martin – but throughout the whole thing, it's Billy's delivery that really sends the record over the top – the new sense of maturity he brings to the huge hit "Me & Mrs Jones", the funky vibe of "Am I Black Enough For You", and the wealth of great work on tracks that include "I'm Gonna Make It This Time", "I'm Just A Prisoner", "Brown Baby", and "Let's Stay Together". A masterpiece of sophisticated soul that not only had Billy crossing over big, but which opened whole new doors in the market for black male singers! War Of The Gods is a stone treasure from one of the greatest soul singers of the 70s – and a set you'll regularly find in the coolest of record collections from back in the day! Billy Paul was always one of the hippest talents on Philly International – mixing together soul and jazz influences with a deeper sense of spirituality, and long experience as a sophisticated vocalist. This album's one of his most sublime efforts – kind of a quasi-spiritual record with a similar high-concept approach to some of Marvin Gaye's work from the same time – really righteous, in ways that the Philly label didn't always hit – and which really goes past even most of Billy's already hip previous efforts. Gamble and Huff produced and wrote most of the record – including the two long tracks that make up side one, "I See The Light" and "War Of The Gods", the latter of which starts out slow and moody, then breaks out into a club groove. Other titles include the more standard soul tune "The Whole Town's Talking", plus "Thanks For Saving My Life" and "Peace Holy Peace". CD

✨✧ VariousBoombox – Early Independent Hip Hop, Electro, & Disco Rap 1979 to 1982 ... CD
Soul Jazz (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Great cuts from the old school – pulled together from the earliest days of hip hop – at a time when the boundary lines in the music weren't so fully formed! These days, the difference between hip hop and club cuts is huge – but back in the South Bronx scene at the start, there was a lot more interplay between styles – as 70s funk served as the blueprint, disco singles expanded the format, soul vocals gave some structure, and live rhymes and DJ work provided all of the spontaneous elements that made the music so unique – coming together with amazing energy that really reflected the street-level sounds of the New York scene! This ultra-hip collection brings together all those amazing strands from the early years – in a set that's one of the best historically important Soul Jazz titles we've seen in years – from the excellent track selection right down to the very detailed notes. There's plenty of rare cuts here you're not likely to have in your collection – and titles include "Body Rock" by Neil B, "Positive Life" by Love Bug Starski & The Harlem World Crew, "At The Place To Be" by Mr Sweety G, "New Rap Language" by Spoonie G & The Treacherous Three, "We Are People Too" by Master Jay, "Equidity Funk" by Mistafide, "And You Know That" by TJ Swan, "Searching Rap" by Bon Rock & The Rhythm Rebellion, "Willie Rap" by Willie Wood & The Willie Wood Crew, "Rhythm Rap Rock" by Count Coolout, "On The Go" by Black Bird & Kevski, "Philosophy Rappin Spree" by Super 3, "Move Your Body" by Bramsam, and "One More Time" by Sugar Daddy.
