Count BasieClass Of '54 (Black Lion) ... CD
Black Lion, 1954. Used ... $7.99
An obscure small group Basie session – and a nice one! The album was issued by the small Storyville label in Boston, and catches Basie with a combo that includes Joe Newman on trumpet, Frank Wess and Frank Foster on tenor, Henry Coker on trombone, and Freddie Green on guitar. The pianist on the set was originally listed as "Bill Bailey", due to contract regulations – but is the Count himself, playing both piano and organ, which we especially like! Titles include "Peter Pan", "Ingin The Ooh", "Confessin", "These Foolish Things", and "In Case You Didn't Know". CD also adds in some rare live tracks recorded in Pennsylvania in 1954 – including some great Neal Hefti tunes that include "Jonesy", "You For Me", "Bubbles", and "Two For The Blues". CD
(Out of print and sealed, original Black Lion pressing.)

✨✧ Thelonious MonkComplete Black Lion & Vogue Recordings Of Thelonious Monk (3CD set) ... CD
Mosaic, 1954/1971. Used 3CDs ... Out Of Stock
Seminal lost work by Monk! This great set brings together 11 rare French solo recordings from 1954, and a whopping batch of trio material from 1971, recordings that were some of the last great ones that Monk did in his all-too-short life. Record one of the set features material that was originally issued on Vogue records in Paris, and titles include "Jackie-ing", "Well, You Needn't", "Round Midnight", "Off Minor", "Eronel", "Manganese", and the previously unissued "Meet Me Tonight In Dreamland". The other three albums feature late Black Lion recordings from 1971 – seminal stuff, as Monk was hardly being taken seriously by other labels at the time, and had walked away from his relationship with Columbia after they were pushing him to do more pop material. The sessions feature Monk solo on about half the tracks, then in a trio with Art Blakey on drums and Al McKibbon on bass (basically the core group of the legendary Giants Of Jazz recording on Atlantic, also done in London around the same time.) Way too many cuts to mention, but we can say that those sessions also include a number of unissued tracks. CD
(Limited and numbered edition, complete with box, book, and all the CDs – lid has a single split corner, otherwise in nice shape!)

✨✧ Lee Perry & The UpsettersRoaring Lion – 16 Untamed Black Art Masters & Dub Plates ... LP
Pressure Sounds (UK), 1970s. Near Mint- 2LP ... Out Of Stock
Booming dubs from Lee Perry and his Upsetters – masters and dub plates from the Black Ark archives – prime unreleased material put together by Pressure Sounds! Roaring Lion has 16 tracks, 11 of which are from one mastertape full of top shelf dubs, and the other 5 are heretofore unreleased alternate mixes and dub plates of prime period material. Fantastic stuff in the quintessential Black Ark style – right up there with the Lee Perry & The The Upsetters more famous material of the era – heavy, bouncing bass, hazy atmosphere, tricked out bits of melodica and other atmospheric washes of sound – plus some soul-steeped vocals in the mix, too. Includes "Truth And Rights", "Roaring Lion" and "Generation From Creation" by Jah Lion & The Upsetters, "Loco Negril" by Althea And Donna, "Pride" by Augustus Pablo & The Upsetters", "Upsetters Shuffle", "Big Gal Sally", "Big Boy Wally", "Rocky Road Dub", "Anasawa Dub", "Dub Dyon", "Emotional Dub", "Dub Stand" and more. Don ByasNight In Tunisia (24 bit remaster) ... CD
Black Lion/DA (Germany), 1963. New Copy ... $1.99 16.99
One of those fantastic overseas later dates from the great Don Byas – already a wonderful tenorist at the start of his career, but a player who really seemed to hit some new modes of expression once the 60s moved around! In a way, Byas' shift here is a bit like that of Coleman Hawkins at the same time – working on longer tracks, with younger players, and an understanding of some of the modern ideas that were being formed on tenor – yet woven back into a style that's very faithful to his great legacy on the instrument! The group here is wonderful – with key contributions on piano from the mighty Bent Axen – as well as bass from Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen, and drums from William Schiopffe. Titles include long takes of "I'll Remember April", "Lady Bird", "Yesterdays", "Lover Man", and "Night In Tunisia". CD

Donald ByrdGroovin' For Nat (aka Hush!) (24 bit remaster) ... CD
Black Lion/DA (Germany), 1962. New Copy ... $2.99 14.99
A reissue of the rare Duke Pearson album Hush – originally issued on the tiny Jazztime label, very briefly during the early 60s! The rare early session by Pearson is one of the few he cut away from Blue Note – and it's musical delight throughout – with twin trumpet work from Donald Byrd and Johnny Coles, piano by Duke, bass by Bob Cranshaw, and drums by the great Walter Perkins – all coming together in a crack style that rivals the best of Blue Note from the time! The two-trumpet frontline is really something to hear, and the interplay between Coles' warm sound and Byrd's hard one opens up the two different sides of Pearson's playing. Titles include "Hush", "Sudel", "Friday's Child", "Smoothie", and "Groovin' For Nat" – and CD features 3 bonus alternate takes. CD

Black Lion (UK), 1973. Used ... $3.99 5.99
A rich testament to the strength of the Parisian traditional jazz scene in the early 70s – as key players Coleman and Lafitte work here with a quintet live at the Montreux jazz fest in 1973. Lafitte's tenor is always a treasure, warm and rich, but moody and edgey at the same time – like the best late work of Coleman Hawkins. The longish tracks on the set give him plenty of space to solo – and titles include "Sur Les Quais Du Vieux Paris", "L and L Blues", "Tour De Force", and "Montreux Jump". CD

Black Lion (Germany), 1954. Used ... $4.99
Tight early work from Lee Konitz – recorded on location at the very hospitable Storyville nightclub in Boston – a sweet setting for his angular tones on the alto! The style here is great – cutting lines that are incredibly precise, yet crafted with enough soul to keep them from just being exercises in sound – delivered with a bit more warmth than some of Lee's other recordings of the time. The group's a quartet with Ronnie Ball on piano, Percy Heath on bass, and Al Levitt on drums – and titles include "Sound Lee", "Subconscious Lee", "Hi Beck", and "These Foolish Things". Very late work from the legendary Thelonious Monk – but surprisingly great as well! The session was recorded in London – as you might guess from the title – and although Monk's not working with his regular quartet with Charlie Rouse, he does interact wonderfully with a trio that includes Art Blakey on drums and Al McKibbon on bass! Brew MooreSvinget 14 ... CD
Black Lion (Germany), 1962. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A lost European recording from American tenorist Brew Moore – sides cut in the early 60s, immediately after Moore's classic albums for Fantasy in San Francisco – and featuring him in a variety of groupings that are all pretty darn compelling! The core group on the set features Moore's tenor next to the rhythm trio of Bent Axen on piano, Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass, and William Schiopffe on drums – but on alternating tracks, Moore also plays with Lars Gullin on baritone, Sahib Shihab on alto, and Louis Hjulmand on vibes. The mix of other players in the frontline makes for a really interesting session, one that captures the crossover magic that could often happen with American players on the European scene in the 60s. Most of the tracks are originals, and titles include "Ergo", "The Monster", "Girls", "Run Away & Play", "Laverne Walk", and "Svingtet 14". CD

✨✧ Anthony Braxton/Richard TeitelbaumSilence/Time Zones ... CD
Black Lion (UK), 1969/1976. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A pair of unusual Anthony Braxton albums – brought together here on a single CD! Silence features Anthony Braxton, recorded in Paris at the end of the 60s – but in the company of two very familiar talents from his hometown – Wadada Leo Smith on trumpet and Leroy Jenkins on violin! Unlike some of Braxton's other Paris recordings, there's a very strong Chicago vibe going on here – as both of the album's long tracks unfold with thoughtful, almost gentle improvisation at times – a very different current of spiritualism than the post-Coltrane world, with all players picking up other instruments at times – in that mode-shifting way that made the early AACM so wonderfully creative! The set features two side-long titles – "Silence" and "Off The Top Of My Head". Time Zones is one of Anthony Braxton's most compelling albums of the 70s – a series of sonic explorations recorded with electronic music artist Richard Teitelbaum – whose work on a variety of moog synthesizers makes for a very groundbreaking accompaniment to Braxton's work on soprano, alto, and bass clarinet! The album features two long improvisations – "Crossing" and "Behemoth Dreams" – both of which are maybe more in the organic territory of the AACM than some of the later experiments that have electronics and improvisation – a really special space that the pair create together that's different from earlier electro-acoustic work, and even the sound of MEV or AMM – a completely fresh approach to electronics in improvisation – graced with some very interesting moments from Braxton as well. ✨✧ Clarke Boland Big BandAt Her Majesty's Pleasure ... LP
Black Lion, 1969. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the greatest long-form albums from the Clarke Boland Big Band – a sophisticated suite that not only shows off the writing ability of Francy Boland, but also demonstrates the group's ability to swing like a mofo, even when things are serious! The album's a jazz suite written by Boland, and dedicated to the great prisons of England – where Johnny Griffin was once kept "At Her Majesty's Pleasure", due to non-payment of some income tax. The experience of Griffin led Boland to explore the idea of the British penal system with a number of powerful emotional themes, and the result of this writing is one of the CBBB's best albums of the late 60s – filled with rich colors and tones that go far beyond the earlier modes of the group, but without some of the too-complicated elements that sometimes show up in later suites. A good part of the album's success comes from the strength of the soloists – players who include Johnny Griffin and Ronnie Scott on tenor, Tony Coe on clarinet, Sahib Shihab on flute and soprano, Kenny Wheeler and Benny Bailey on trumpets, and Ake Persson and Nat Peck on trombones. Titles include "Pentonville", "Wormwood Scrubs", "Doing Time", "Broadmoor", and "Going Straight". LP, Vinyl record album

Black Lion/Arista Freedom, 1964. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Seminal work from trumpeter Ted Curson – a set that's issued under his own name, but which continues a string of key early 60s performances with tenorist Bill Barron – who's work together here with Ted is fantastic! The group has no piano – just Herb Bushler on bass and Dick Berk on drums – both players with a fluid, open sense of rhythm – one that allows for plenty of horn interplay, at a level that almost has Curson borrowing some of the lessons he learned from Mingus, then taking them into small group formation and really opening things up! Curson also blows a bit of pocket trumpet, and Barron handles some clarinet – on a set of all original material that includes a great version of Curson's "Quicksand", plus the tracks "Kassim", "East 6th Street", "Tears For Dolphy", "7/4 Funny Time", and "Desolation". 2 different sessions by Julius Hemphill – one from 1975, with Arthur Blythe, Hamiet Bluiett, and Abdul Wadud; the other from 1972, with Bluiett, Wadud, and Baikida Carroll. The 1972 session's a bit more interesting, and was recorded in St. Louis by Oliver Sain (of all people!). It's one long track entitled "The Hard Blues", and has an excellent mix of styles, emotions, and voices – with all the players getting in some beautiful solo moments. The 1975 session's not too bad either, but it's just a little too self-consciously out, and lacks the warmth of the other piece. Other tracks include "Skin 2", "Lyric", "Reflections", and "Skin One". ✨✧ Philly Joe JonesTrailways Express (aka Mo' Joe) ... LP
Black Lion, 1968. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A killer session that matches the talents of American drum genius Philly Joe Jones with some of the leading lights in British jazz! The set was recorded in London in 1968, at that perfect moment when the Brit jazz scene was turning towards new ideas of modernism, but hadn't yet strayed too far from the tight swing that characterized most of its playing since the postwar years. Philly leads a group that includes Kenny Wheeler on trumpet, Chris Pyne on trombone, Pete King on alto, and Harold McNair on tenor and flute. King and McNair are some of our favorite players ever, rarely reissued on CD or LP – and the set gives them plenty of free reign to solo madly in a bop-heavy environment. One of the first European recordings from Sahib Shihab – a classic set that's the start of an amazing 60s run on the continent! Shihab here is quite different than his American dates of the 50s – bolder, and blowing with a really open, fluid sort of groove that marks a great development in his sound – using baritone sax, soprano, and flute – a range of instruments that really creates a wide range of feeling in the set! The performance is a live one, and the group is great too – with Allen Botschinsky on flugelhorn, Ole Molin on guitar, Niles Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass, and both Alex Riel and Bjarne Rostvold on drums. Rhythms are a key part of the set – really free and open, setting the scene for Sahib's modal genius to come – and titles include "47th Blues", "Billy Boy", and the 3-part track "Conversations". CD

The tracks are very long, and Tolliver and Hicks weave these beautiful spiralling solos, then drop out to let Reggie Workman get in some nice bass licks. The work is similar to Tolliver's sides for Strata East at the same time – but the presence of John Hicks is a nice contrast to the more common presence of Stanley Cowell, and it makes for a bit more tightness in the set. 5 tracks in all, including "Truth", "Our Second Father", "Grand Max", "Repetition" and "Prayer For Peace". CD features 5 bonus tracks – including "Blues For Bud", "Children's Play", "They Say It's Wonderful", and alternate takes of "Black Forest" and "Spanish Steps". CD

Black Lion, 1961. Used ... Out Of Stock
An obscure Howard McGhee session, but a great one! The 1961 session was recorded during Maggie's great comeback years – at a time when he was doing some great work for labels that included Bethlehem, Contemporary, and United Artists. The spirit of this set is similar to those – sort of an easy-going blend of light bop with some of the gentler swinging tones that McGhee was putting into his horn at the time. The quintet on the set features George Coleman on tenor, Junior Mance on piano, George Tucker on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums – and the whole thing's got an easygoing mellow feel that we really like a lot. Titles include "The Sharp Edge", "Cool", "Shades Of Blue", "Arabee", and "My Delight". CD features some bonus alternate takes, too! CD

Blakey's drums have this nice crispness that transforms the Monk experience – and some performances stretch out in a nicely inspired way. CD

Brilliant work from Joe Newman – arguably our favorite session of his from the 50s, and a freshly crafted batch of tracks that actually has some nice modern touches! Joe's playing here with 2 different groups – one with John Lewis on piano, Gene Quill on alto, Frank Foster on tenor, and Freddie Green on guitar; and one with Frank Wess on tenor and flute, Ed Jones on bass, and Sir Charles Thompson on piano. The Quill sides are especially nice – very tightly arranged with a good sense of counterpoint, but also enough relaxed soloing to bring in the Newman that we know and love. Titles include "Midgets", "Diffugalty", "I Feel Like A Newman", "King Size", "East Of The Sun", and "Sweetie Cake". CD

✨✧ Albert AylerGoing Home ... CD
Black Lion (Germany), 1964. Used ... Out Of Stock
Pre-ESP Records work from the legendary Albert Ayler – and a really special set that definitely shows his strong ties to a previous legacy of African-American music! Ayler always clamed blues and other roots in his sound, but didn't always show them as clearly – given his free-thinking, forward-moving approach – yet this set has Albert really reworking an older influence, by taking older songs from gospel and secular sources, and using them as a completely compelling springboard for his new ideas on tenor and soprano sax! The album's the sort that David Murray might have cut in the mid 80s – but conceived by Ayler two decades before – and sadly unissued for years after its recording, possibly because it's a very sensitive, soulful set that's different than the frenetic power of later albums on ESP. A real treasure throughout – with work from Call Cobbs Jr on piano, Henry Grimes on bass, and Sonny Murray on drums – on titles that include "Swing Low Sweet Chariot", "Deep River", "Goin Home", "Ol Man River", "Down By The Riverside", and "Nobody Knows The Trouble I've Seen". A record that's definitely as brilliant as promised in the title – a set that has the young pianist Stanley Cowell bridging the late 60s Blue Note modal sound and his greatness to come on the Strata East label – all with a style that would set the tone for so many other players and groups in the 70s! The mix of musicians here is a dream – not just Cowell on piano, but also Bobby Hutcherson on vibes, Woody Shaw on trumpet, Tyrone Washington on tenor and flute, Reggie Workman on bass, and Joe Chambers on drums – all players with maybe a bit more under their belt, but who also instantly lock into Cowell's visionary new sound – spun out in a mix of modal moments and freer solos, on tunes penned by members of the group. Every track is nice and long, and has a spiritual jazz vibe that owes a lot more to the worlds of Cowell, Hutcherson, and Shaw than it does John Coltrane – as you'll hear on titles that include "Brilliant Circles", "Earthly Heavens", "Boo Ann's Grand", and "Bobby's Tune". CD reissue has two bonus cuts: "Musical Prayers" and "Brilliant Circles"! CD

Black Lion/Muzak (Japan), Early 60s. New Copy 2CD Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A pair of rare late albums from Bud Powell – back to back in a single set! Strictly Confidential is a really unusual set of recordings from pianist Bud Powell – tracks recorded in his overseas home, solo – a setting that puts the keyboard magic of Powell in a similar sound to that of Art Tatum, who'd recorded in such a way the decade before! At some level, these might be the most compelling recordings that Bud made at the time – as there's an intimacy that's wonderful, and an inherent swing that makes you realize how much Powell was always driving the group – even when he was working with top-shelf drummers and bassists. Plus, the solo mode maybe also opens up a current of humanity past the Bud's skills on the keys – which makes the whole record all that much more powerful. Titles include "Deep Night", "Strictly Confidental", "Wahoo", "Deep Inside", "My Devotion", "Conception", and "Ruby My Dear". Essen Jazz Festival All Stars is a great recording from the 1960 Essen Jazz Festival in Germany – one that has bassist Oscar Pettiford playing with Bud Powell and drummer Kenny Clarke (all of whom were living abroad at the time), and being joined by Coleman Hawkins on a few tracks. On the trio sides, although Powell's strong piano is out front, Pettiford still gets a lot of room to solo in warm round swells. The Hawk sides are our favorites, though, because we love the great tenor player at this point in his career, when he was playing in a way that was deceptively easy, but which was filled with all of these incredible surprises. The tracks on this LP are no exception, and the Hawk flies high high high on "All The Things You Are", "Yesterdays", and "Stuffy". CD

A sharp early 60s session from the Duke Ellington group – one that seems to draw strongly on the best late 50s work for Columbia Records, but which also seems to add in an extra crackle too! The tunes are relatively short, but the group pack plenty of punch in the small space – especially on the more rhythmic numbers, which almost seem to borrow a bit from Basie's bag – yet with more of the sophistication you'd expect on the Ellington horns. The work of Aaron Bell on bass and Sam Woodyard on drums is especially strong on this session – but there's loads of great interplay from reedmen who include Johnny Hodges, Jimmy Hamilton, Russel Procope, Harry Carney, and Paul Gonsalves – plus trumpet from Bill Berry, Cat Anderson, Roy Burrowes, and Harold Baker. All the great early albums from Creation Rebel – plus their excellent comeback too! The set begins with Dub From Creation – not just the debut album from Creation Rebel, but also a set that marks the first studio work from the young Adrian Sherwood – part of the long On-U Sound legacy to come, and a wealth of other wonderful music! There's a spareness here that's great – maybe a bit less dark than later Sherwood projects, but no less stark – with melodica and keyboards weaving nicely amidst the dubby rhythms! Titles include "Basic Principals", "Dub Fusion", "Liberation", "Rising Star", "Vision Of Creation", and "Creation In A Iration". Next is Close Encounters Of The Third World – an early part of the On-U Sound legacy, even if the set wasn't issued on the label – a key effort by Creation Rebel that features recording work done both in London and Kingston, layered together in a beautifully dubby way! The sound here is definitely underground – full of message-oriented lyrics from Crucial Tony, who sings in a style that definitely earns him his name – with great melodica and organ flowing through the mix next to Lizard's bass – topped with added horn work from The Arabs in all the right spots! The production is superb – flat on the drums, wide on the sides, which makes for a really wonderful groove – on titles that include "Know Yourself", "Conspiring", "Creation Fever", "Natty Conscience Free", and "Joyful Noise". Rebel Vibrations features early production genius from Adrian Sherwood – and a record that sets the tone for all the On-U Sound genius to come! The set's a huge step forward from even the previous excellent Creation Rebel album – as the way the sounds are layered together is incredible – almost modes learned from post-punk production, but used to deliver a pure, righteous dub album – one that drops out all the vocals, and allows you to concentrate even more on the totally wicked instrumentation! The set features stunning drums from Style Scott, heady bass from Lizard, and all sorts of very cool keyboard work from Clifton Morrison – used in these ways that float about like a swarm of sounds, especially when mixed with the melodica of Doctor Pablo. The whole thing's amazing – and titles include "Diverse Doctor", "Hunger & Strife", "Jungle Affair", "Rebel Vibration", "Black Lion Dub", and "Mountain Melody". Starship Africa is a brilliant Creation Rebel effort for On-U Sound from the dawn of the 80s – landing in the futuristic dub spacecraft that is their Starship Africa – percussion heavy and spaced out ingenuity from Adrian Sherwood & co! Tripped, echoey atmospherics that's cast as a soundtrack to movie that doesn't exist, the music is forward thinking, boundary busting dubby grooves exists out of time and sounds great to this day. Includes "Starship Africa" (Sections 1-5) and "Space Movement" (Sections 1-4). On Psychotic Jonkanoo, Crucial Tony is back in the mix for this righteous early 80s album from Creation Rebel – a set that has Adrian Sherwood only furthering his production genius as he layers together stunning instrumental work from the group! The presence of the vocals has the instrumentation slightly back in the mix – but there's still a great run of rhythms throughout, all driven by the mighty heady basslines of Lizard Logan! There's less keyboards than before, but still some nice electronic bits all over the place – and titles include "The Dope", "African Space", "Threat To Creation", "Highest Degree", "Mother Don't Cry", and "Drum Talk". From 2023, Hostile Environment is the first album in many years from this legendary studio project from On-U Sound and Adrian Sherwood – and one that makes us feel as if the passage of decades hasn't happened at all! Sherwood's production is still wonderful – and, if anything, maybe less showy, or more soulful, or less moody – just something that seems to let the work of the group come through with energy that's wonderfully warm and organic, while still resonating with plenty of touches that will make longtime label fans proud! Vocals are shared between Charlie Eskimo Fox and Mr Magoo, and the set also features guest appearances from Prince Far I and Daddy Freddy – on titles that include "That's More Like It" "Jubilee Clock", "Swiftly", "Stonebridge Warrior", "Crown Hill Road", "The People's Sound", and "Whatever It Takes". Joe Gibbs (UK), 1978. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The first album from Culture, and still their most classic – a set that takes its title from a prediction by Marcus Garvey – who said that there would be trouble in the world when "two sevens clash" on July 7, 1977! Fortunately, we made it all through that date in one piece – and good thing too, as the record's gone on to even more legendary status as the years have gone on – with a righteous sort of energy that just seems to get more important over the decades. Joe Gibbs produced, and arranged with Errol Thompson – and the slow-stepping rhythms of the set, heavy on bottom-end sounds, are a perfect backdrop for the message-oriented lyrics in the music. Every cut's a classic – and titles include "I'm Alone In The Wilderness", "Pirate Days", "Two Sevens Clash", "Calling Rastafari", "I'm Not Ashamed", "Get Ready To Ride The Lion To Zion", "Black Starliner Must Come", "Jah Pretty Face", "See Them A Come", and "Natty Dread Taking Over". Music & Arts, 1994. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great revival of one of our favorite Anthony Braxton pairings – his 70s duets with electronic musician Richard Teitelbaum, brought back to light here in a live performance from 1994! The music's got an even more atmospheric than the pair's familiar record for Black Lion – very stretched out and spacious, with interplay between the reeds and electric sounds that makes it very hard to determine which is which – and we mean that in a good way! Braxton plays alto, soprano, sopranino, flute, and a range of clarinets – and titles include "Set 1", "Set 2", and "Encore". CD

Blistering! From an era before the machines ruled the Kingston studios, when reggae artists still put together formidable live sets, this late 70s LP from Winston Rodney features mightily rocking renditions of some of his best material! Don't get us wrong, we get down with the digital sound too, but these golden era recordings bring an entirely different kind of heaviness to bear on roots tracks. 7 essential numbers: "Marcus Garvey", "Slavery Days", "Black Soul", "Lion", "Old Marcus", "Man In The Hills" and "Throw Down Your Arms". Iggy Pop may have left The Stooges behind, but he's lost none of his edge – and really finds a new level of solo greatness on this sublime classic from the 70s! The set was produced by David Bowie, who also plays piano on the set – and has Carlos Alamar adding in some guitar – and the overall sound has that raw Berlin mode you might find on some of he headiest tracks on Heroes – kind of "Joe The Lion" meets the gritty truth of Iggy's Detroit! The title cut is maybe the best-known Iggy Pop tune ever – used in countless films and commercials – but the whole thing's great, and a brilliant new focus for Mr Pop's genius. A great new showcase for the legendary keyboard work of Doug Carn – and a set that's very different both from his famous albums for the Black Jazz label, and some of his organ jazz records in more recent years too! The set's maybe got a more pronounced influence from Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad than some of the others in this series – as Carn's Hammond B3 and Fender Rhodes still get center stage, but the grooves are very much in the heavy funk style of Younge's legacy of recent recordings – sharp drums, strong basslines, and horns that are sometimes jazzy, sometimes seemingly touched by currents of Ethiopian work from the past. All tracks are originals, and titles include "Processions", "Dimensions", "Windfall", "Down Deep", "Freedom At Sunset", "Nunca Um Malandro", and "Lion's Walk". CD

A landmark album – Donald Byrd's first session with producer Larry Mizell, the man who went onto forever change the face of jazz funk! After rumbling around for a few years attempting electric styles that really didn't fit his mode, Donald wisely hooked up with Larry, and hit a groove here that would carry him for many many years. The album's a masterpiece of soul – heavy production with great keyboards, creating a nice set of grooves that let Byrd solo over the top, sounding better than he had in years! Fantasy/OJC, 1962. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A beautiful record of light, lyrical piano jazz – and one of the best-selling jazz albums ever on Fantasy Records! Vince Guaraldi started the set as a tribute to the film Black Orpheus – and some of the album features his nice renditions of Jobim/Bonfa tunes like "Manha De Carnaval" and "Samba De Orpheus". However, Guaraldi also managed to pen his own amazing track – "Cast Your Fate To The Wind" – a lyrical romping piano instrumental that went onto become a huge charting instrumental hit during the 60s. The track's been heard a million times over the years, but it's still pretty darn great – and it's surrounded in a nice set with other tunes that have the same feel – including "O Nosso Amour", "Alma-Ville", "Since I Fell For You", and "Moon River". Flying Dutchman, 1975. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
One of Groove Holmes' best albums of the 70s – thanks to some electric blacksploitation arrangements from the great Oliver Nelson! The format's a bit tighter here than on some of Holmes' Groove Merchant albums from the earlier part of the decade – an approach that's almost like soundtrack scoring at times, but which allows Groove to stretch out a bit more on the solos, and take things way past the already-funky head arrangements penned by Nelson. Mike Wofford's also on the record, throwing in some great electric piano and Arp in underneath Holmes' own funky Hammond – and other players include Tom Scott, David T Walker, and Oscar Brashear – who all contribute nicely to the record. Titles include "Disc-o-Mite", "Salsa de Alma", "Dumpy Mama", "Mama's Groove", "125th & 7th Ave", and "Six Million Dollar Man", the theme from the TV show! LP, Vinyl record album

ProphetsKing Tubby's Prophecies Of Dub ... LP
Pressure Sounds (UK), 1976. New Copy ... $22.99 23.99
A fantastic album of dub from the 70s – and one that's got as much mystery on its cover as it's got magic in the grooves! Despite the name of King Tubby on the front, the real genius at the controls is Pat Kelly – who's got a different, but equally wicked way with working up a track – in this case, backing tracks from Bunny Striker Lee, which are given all sorts of cool changes in the snare, echo on the core drum parts, and nicely spacey touches all around the edges – almost outer space dub, of a mode that would come on more strongly a few years later! Pat Kelly claimed a lot of influence from jazz, and you can definitely hear it in the snare – on titles that include "Earth Fear", "Tradition Skank", "Black Out", "Serious Rebellion", "Bad Man Skank", "Was Alive", "Gun Man From Water House", and "Babylon Red". VariousFunky Chicken – Belgian Grooves From The 70s ... CD
Sdban (Belgium), 1970s. New Copy 2CD ... $18.99 22.99
Fantastic funk from the Belgian scene of the 70s – a really mad mix of sounds and styles, and a really revelatory set overall! Few people might use the words "Belgium" and "funk" in the same sentence – but that may well change after this sweet set gets a few spins – as the whole thing's a stunning array of groovers that not only match the best jazz, funk, and sound library tracks from other European scenes in the 70s – they also do a great job of taking on the best America had to offer too! Belgium was no stranger to soul and funk – given its fervent 60s soul collectors scene, and the nation's role as a crossroads in Europe – which left it open to plenty of influence from visiting musicians, including American artists as well. You can definitely hear all that coming into play here – as the work is nicely fresh, and very free of overdone cliches or easy references – as these guys all take the best bits that might have influenced them, and jumbled them up into something really new. The scope of sounds is wonderful – and titles include "Funky Tramway" by Mad Unity, "Sunshine Star" by Open Sky Unit, "Gimme Some More Of That" by Plus, "Funky" by Andre Brasseur, "Avenue Louise" by Black Blood, "Music & Co" by Les Helions, "Balek" by Placebo, "Librium" by Chicken Curry & His Pop Percussion Orchestra, "Top Less" by Alex Scorier, "Stories" by Chakachas, "Ostinato Bass" by Rene Costy, "Memories" by Amadeo, "Viva Boma" by Cos, "Pop In Three" by The Rapture, "Smoke" by Leo Cavallo, "Marakesh" by Hein Huysmans Kwintet, "One For You" by Doug Lucas, "Put Everything Together" by Plus, "Lord Funk" by Super Funk Special, and "Humpty Dumpty" by Placebo.
