✨✧ Gene AmmonsLegends Of Acid Jazz – Black Cat!/You Talk That Talk! ... CD
Prestige, 1970/1971. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A pair of funky killers from tenorist Gene Ammons! Black Cat is one of the great funky albums that Gene Ammons cut for Prestige at the start of the 70s – quite different than his earlier work for the label, and a very different showcase for his tenor genius! The whole lineup here is amazing – a quintet that features heavy drums from Idris Muhammad, piano and Fender Rhodes from Harold Mabern, bass from Ron Carter, and some tremendously smoking guitar from the great George Freeman! Freeman goes nuts on the funky cut "The Black Cat" – and other tracks include "Jug Eyes", "Hi Ruth", "Something", and "Piece To Keep Away Evil Spirits". You Talk That Talk is a set done in collaboration with Sonny Stitt – and these two tenor giants meet in the period slightly before Ammons death, and they're grouped with some of the younger funky players on Prestige, like Leon Spencer, Idris Muhammad, and George Freeman. The sound is fairly traditional, but there's some nice funky moments. Tracks include "Out Of It", which was written by Harold Vick, "The People's Choice", written by Harold Ousley, and the title cut, which is a Leon Spencer original. The 14 track set includes the full titles from 2 LPs, plus 2 bonus cuts from a rare source! CD

✨✧ Durul GenceBlack Cat/Boo Song ... 7-inch
Finders Keepers (UK), 1974. New Copy (pic cover)... Out Of Stock
"Black Cat" is a groovy little tune from Turkish rocker Durul Gence – maybe slightly more Anglo-styled than music from some of his contemporaries, but in a really great way! Lyrics are in English, and the tune's got this great groove that mixes acoustic guitar and fuzz with plenty of dark corners around the edges – and "Boo Song" maybe feels even more British overall, with this use of acoustic guitar amidst more soaring arrangements – which, with Durul's vocals, make the whole thing feel like some lost London gem from 1969! 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ James GreerGuided By Voices – A Brief History – Twenty-One Years Of Hunting Accidents In The Forest Of Rock & Roll ... Book
Black Cat, 2005. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The story of Guided By Voices – a group who labored in the American underground for quite some time before finding big fame – a story that makes the group's success far more interesting than most! The book details all the work and time that Robert Pollard put into getting the group going, and finding the right path forward – and Pollard cooperated heavily with the author, so that his voice is every bit as much a part of the book as that of James Greer. This softcover edition features a black and white photo section in the middle, and some great discographical details at the end – including solo and side projects too. 319 pages. Book

✨✧ Piero PiccioniFumo Di Londra ... CD
Black Cat (Italy), 1966. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the hippest Italian soundtracks of the 60s – and a motherlode of tracks by the great Piero Piccioni! The soundtrack is the source of the oft-compiled "Mr Dante Fontana", a nutty groover about the mod fashion scene in Italy – and it also features the famous tracks "Richmond Bridge" and "You Never Told Me". Most of the music is by Piccioni and the wonderful vocal group I Cantori Moderni, with Edda Dell'Orso on vocals – but the CD also features some work by Lydia Mac Donald, Julie Rogers, and Ennio Morricone. Includes a few versions of the "Fontana" and "Richmond", plus "Ascot Dream", "Magic Castle", "Tango Walk", "Drag Beat", "This Is Life", "Palace Parade March", "Babylon, I'm Coming", and "His Dream Has Come True". Very groovy – with loads of excellent material, and 27 cuts in all! CD

✨✧ Marc 4Psych Jazzy Beat Of I Marc 4 ... CD
Black Cat (Italy), Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The Marc 4 were one of the all-time great studio combos of the Italian scene of the early 70s – and they cut an amazing amount of fantastic music that was used in obscure Italian films and TV shows at the time. This set's one of the best we've ever seen to collect their work – and it brings together 24 stunning tracks that very ably show the band's talent to mix together funk, jazz, and various groove and psyche influences that were running through the early 70s vogue for hip soundtrack work. Plenty of great guitar and organ riffing, and 100% groovy all the way through! Titles include "Rita", "Catherine", "Max", "Berkey 70", "Inchiesta Sulla Mafia", "Distortion Mind", "Luna", "Key Board", "Happy Beat", "The Sound", "Boxes", and "Beat Generation". Very nice! CD

No easygoing "lounge" here – but a really groovy batch of soundtrack work from the fab Armando Trovajoli – easily one of the hippest talents on the Italian scene of the 60s! Trovajoli's got a really mod way with a tune that's fully explored here – a use of driving rhythms, electric basslines, bits of organ, and often female vocals – all wrapped up into tunes that shake, jerk, and slink with the best groovy soundtracks of their generation. Titles include "Francoise", "L'Arcidiavolo", "Quante Bella Giovinezza", and "Quando Ero Un Bebe". 7-inch, Vinyl record

Four very cool groovers from Italian maestro Armando Trovajoli – pressed up here on a limited edition 7" EP, with two tracks that have never been issued before! "Roma Bene" is represented by a rare "shake" version that has some fuzzy guitar that trips out nicely over upbeat grooves – and "La Pecora Nera" gets a cool vocal take from Rocky Roberts, who sings soulfully over the mod rhythms! A full vinyl release by The Ad Libs – a group known for their classic singles of the 60s, but one who never issued a full-length album of their own! This great little set more than corrects that fact – by bringing together 9 rare singles for the Blue Cat label, plus a few previously unissued tracks – tracks that never made it onto vinyl back in the 60s! The issued singles alone are great – a beautiful blend of one gal and four guy singers, handled with a style that's on the rougher edge of the New York style of soul at the time. Titles include "On The Corner", "Boy From New York City", "Appreciation", "Oo Wee Oo Gee", "Johnny My Boy", "The Slime", "Down Home Girl", "If She Wants Him", "He Ain't No Angel", "Nothing Worse Than Being Alone", "Kicked Around", and "I'm Just A Down Home Girl". Soulful sounds from Black Pumas – a collaboration between singer Eric Burton and the great Adrian Quesada – the latter an instrumentalist and producer that you'll know from a variety of different funky projects over the years! Salaam Remi's usually a key talent in the background for others – but here, he acts more like the leader in the spotlight – opening the door to a great array of talents, and really finding a way to express a powerful message over the course of the album! Remi's always had a great ear for a classic groove – we first fell in love with him for his James Brown tribute years ago – and here, he mixes classic funk, soul, and Afro-styled elements for contributions from Black Thought, Common, Busta Rhymes, Betty Wright, Bilal, Cee-Lo Green, Super Cat, Stephen Marley, and many others – digging into the past for a bold vision for a positive future. Titles include a great remake of the Syl Johnson classic "Is It Because I'm Black" and James Brown's "Say It Loud" – plus "Comin Outta The Rain", "Really Real Out Here", "Tear It Down", "Live From Soul In The Horn", "Black Progress", "Afrikan Children", "Black Love", and "No Peace". Cannonball AdderleyPrice You Got To Pay To Be Free ... LP
Capitol, 1970. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... $23.99
Fantastic work from the massive electric years of the Cannonball Adderley Quintet – one of the group's last records to feature the keyboards of Joe Zawinul – and also one of the heaviest from the time! The set's a double-length gem that presents the group in an open live setting – one that really displays the full charm of their approach at the time, and that wonderfully crowd-winning mode that made Cannon a key act at this time for rock and soul audiences too! Adderley raps a bit at key points, and brings some righteous energy to the concert – while the rest of the group follow up with performances that really send the whole thing home – Nat Adderley on cornet, Zawinul on Fender Rhodes and piano, Walter Booker on bass, and Roy McCurdy on drums. Cannon plays some soprano sax, in addition to his familiar alto – and titles include "Alto Sex", "Lonesome Stranger", "Wild Cat Pee", "Soul Virgo", "Painted Desert", "Directions", "Pra Dizer Adeus", "Rumplestiltskin", "Price You Got To Pay To Be Free", "Esquisition", "Get Up Off Your Knees", "Down In Black Bottom", and "The Scene". Guitarist Laurindo Almeida returns to a bit of his roots here – but he also shows off a lot of the jazz experience he's picked up along the way! The album features Almeida working solo on acoustic guitar – although possibly overdubbed alongside himself at times – and while the set begins with the serious title composition, things never get too much in the realm of classical guitar – and instead have Almeida skirting many different styles, including a bit of bossa guitar – and working with this uniquely echoey recording style that makes each note resonate with a richly expressive sound! Titles include "Cool Cat Keeps Coat On", "Holiday For Strings", "Songs From Black Orpheus", "The Summer Knows", and "Star Dust". CD

Al DiMeolaElectric Rendezvous ... LP
Columbia, 1982. Near Mint- ... $9.99
A sweet electric rendezvous from guitarist Al Di Meola – and a record that stands in sharp contrast to some of the mellower acoustic sessions he was cutting at the time! The album's got a mix of fuzz and funk that's a bit like some of Stanley Clarke's albums for Columbia in the same stretch – never too rocking, and always with a sense of jazz firmly in place – but definitely tuned towards a new electric generation for the 80s! The other players really support that energy – and include Jan Hammer and Philippe Saisse on keyboards, Anthony Jackson on bass, and Steve Gadd on drums – and although Al plays acoustic guitar at a number of points, the overall setting is highly electric. Gentle Giant were one of the few who could strike this balance so well, and an album like this is a perfect example of the great niche they carved out for themselves at the time. The keyboards here are especially great – and feature lots of moog and mellotron that skanes through the tunes with an almost flute-like feel. Handsome Boy Modeling SchoolWhite People (clean version) ... CD
Atlantic, 2004. Used ... $1.99
Just when you thought Prince Paul and Cat Power would never make a record together PRESTO – it's the new Handsome Boy album! HBMS takes a bit more of a chillout tack with this long overdue second opus – with lots of laidback beats and samples, and a surprising amount of live instrumentation! The gleeful, sarcastic comedy of the stellar first album remains intact, with some genuinely amusing skits (including one with Jay Z appearing under the pseudonym Hines Buchanan), and the deep range of guest vocalists isn't as surprising as how strong their work is in the best tunes. It would have been pretty easy for Prince Paul and Automator to find a bunch of interesting names to flesh out their big pop culture frappe, but something else altogether to make trippy hip hop tracks featuring Cat Power and the Hieroglyphics make sense on the same record. A pretty solid set from the most adventurous pseudo duo in the game! Jazzman (UK), 2020. New Copy ... $9.99
A tremendous entry in this wonderful series – a set that proudly proclaims its contents with the "NOW" on the cover! Back when the Spiritual Jazz series first started on the Jazzman label, the music was mostly relegated to material of the John Coltrane generation and the generation that followed – but in the past decade or so, there's been a huge explosion in new artists that explore the deeper, more righteous currents of jazz – music that's pulled in from the farther reaches of free improvisation, to righteous, message-oriented styles that often mix modal rhythms with more exploratory solo passages. Yet this new generation is hardly slavish to the sounds of Impulse Records – as they've really moved beyond, and have used a globe's worth of influences and new 21st Century concepts to bring fresh spirit to the music – opening things up in ways that have made this new movement one of our greatest sources of inspiration in recent years. This double-length entry is a fantastic overview of the sounds that are currently reshaping the planet – and titles on volume 1 include "Lizard Waltz" by Benjamin Herman "Wisdom Of Elders" by Shabaka & The Ancestors, "Soul" by Cat Toren's Human Kind, "Nimeton" by Oiro Pena, "Echoes Of Ancient Sahara" by Darryl Yokley's Sound Reformation, "Winter" by Black Flower, "Shamal Wind" by Chip Wickham, "An Angel Fell" by Idris Ackamoor & The Pyramids, "Sounds Like Now" by Damon Locks, "Gnawa" by Makaya McCraven, and "The Black Ark" by Nat Birchall. Trio/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1976. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really wonderful set of cross-cultural experimentation – as Japanese pianist Takashi Kako comes into contact with part of the Steve Lacy group – but with a style that's very different than some of Lacy's work at the time! There's a bold sense of urgency here – almost the spirit of late 50s/early 60s righteous modern jazz, mixed with some of the the freer sounds that the Europeans unlocked in the following decade – as the bold work of Kako on piano is mixed with trumpet from Itaru Oki, sharp-edged alto from Claude Bernard, bass from Kent Carter, and drums and percussion from Oliver Johnson. There's a richness to the album that's undeniable – a strong mixture of group structure and individual freedoms – on titles that include "Contact", "The Tune", "Escargot", "Black Cat", "Dodec", and "Donnee". A really wonderful setting for the keyboard talents of the mighty Greg Foat – a loose, laidback trio who really takes his music to different directions than some of his previous projects! We love drummer Aleksi Heinola from his own records – and here, he has a way of sounding loose and tight at the same time – almost casually funky, but with spiritual currents too – augmented by the basswork of Teemu Akerblom, and topped with all these really wonderful Fender Rhodes lines from Greg Foat – who also plays a Moog Grandmother and Roland JX-8P too! The record's got this great blend of funky and spacey sounds at the same time – and titles include "Valley Of The Black Cats", "Catnip Dreams", "Feline Fantasy", "Gone To The Cats", "Yim & Yohn", and "Three Mjau Waltz". Lion, Early 70s. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A totally cool collection of unusual cumbia cuts from 70s Peru – music that definitely earns the psychedelic tag promised in the title, given its heavy use of electric guitars and trippy production! The style here is different than more familiar cumbia from Colombia – rooted in the rhythmic approach, but taken to really new territory by the artists on the set – some of whom were likely garage and psych combos, able to turn their style towards the new groove of the time! Many of the tracks are instrumentals – which furthers their unusual feel, as the vibe is almost like some unusual Latin take on surf music – and titles include "La Negrita" by Los Blancaguay, "Bongocero" by Los Telstars, "Sueno Magico" by The Black Cats, "Soul Finger" by Los Escaramujos, "Marihuana" by Los Darlings De Huanuco, "Je T'Aime Moi Non Plus" by Santanita, "Cuarto Oscuro" by Los Zheros, and "Las Oleadas" by Ranil Y Su Conjunto. Some of the hippest sounds we've ever heard from pianist Gene Russell – an album that features heavy use of Fender Rhodes – and a soulful, solid, rhythmic core that comes from the basslines of Henry Franklin, guitar of Calvin Keys, and drums of Ndugu Chancler! The set's one of the greatest in the legendary Black Jazz catalog – and is a perfect illustration of the righteous ways the label's players helped to update soul jazz styles of the 60s – really reworking things here with a fresh 70s vibe, and a sense of conscious energy that flows effortlessly from Russell's work on the keys! Most numbers feature added percussion, which really furthers the spirit of the session – and titles include the massive "Get Down", plus "Blues Suite", "For Heaven's Sake", "Talk to My Lady", "My Favorite Things", and "Me & Mrs Jones". A great little record from alto saxophonist Norman Williams – also known as The Bishop – and the first record on the mighty Theresa label too! The sound here is maybe a bit funkier than some of the other Theresa sessions of the late 70s – in part because there's some monstrous bass on the record, courtesy of Michael Formanek – who works magic alongside the keyboards and warmly-rolling rhythms – which are a perfect foil for the sharper lines that Williams brings to the record on his alto! The approach has some of the warmth and soul of the best 70s sessions on Black Jazz or Catalyst – and titles include "Trane's Paradise", "Mr Peabody", "Figure Eight", "Terry's Song", and "Ole Brown". Atco/Fat Possum, 1980. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... On November 26, 2021
A totally great album from the early years of the New York punk scene – and a set that will be remembered as the moment of musical glory for the legendary Jim Carroll! As with Tom Verlaine, Richard Hell, and Patti Smith – Carroll has roots in writing, but energy that needs music to really set it on fire – sounds that explode here with the intensity of the generation who lived through the city on fire, the garbage strike, and all the other tumult of NYC in the late 70s – an experience that's also added to Jim's young struggles with addiction. The music is every bit as sharp as Carroll's lyrics – and in addition to the seminal "People Who Died", the record sparkles with tunes that include "Three Sisters", "Nothing Is True", "Wicket Gravity", "City Drops Into Night", "Crow", "I Want The Angel", and "Catholic Boy". BGO (UK), 1989/1992. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Two Joe Zawinul albums – back to back on a single set! Black Water is funky fusion from the late 80s combo of keyboardist Joe Zawinul – a set that takes off nicely from his classic work in Weather Report, then adds in both a dose of soul and more global elements! The group features Joe on a host of different keyboards – with Gerald Veasley on some very heavy bass, Scott Henderson on guitars, and Lynne Fiddmont Linsey on vocals and percussion – joined at times by Carl Anderson and Kevin Dorsey, who both give the set a full, righteous vibe! Instrumentation is heavily in an 80s electric mode, but warmed up nicely by the other touches and percussion – and titles include "Black Water", "Carnavalito", "In The Same Boat", "Familial", "Medicine Man", "They Had A Dream", "And So It Goes", and "Monk's Mood". Lost Tribes is a record that has the legendary keyboardist Joe Zawinul dipping further into the mix of jazz and global elements brought forth by his Syndicate group – served up here with a really unusual mix of elements, and a strong balance between acoustic percussion and electric instrumentation! The voice is as powerful here as the groove – sometimes song soulfully, but other times used almost more as another instrument – opening the door further to some of the global sensibilities that Zawinul was bringing to some of his later work with Weather Report. the group features Mike Baker on drums, Randy Bernsen on percussion, and Gerald Veasley on bass – and titles include "Changes", "San Sebatian", "Rua Paula Freitas", "South Africa", "Patriots", and "Lost Tribes". Some of the songs are heavy on message – both personal and political – and the rhythms have these complicated basslines that really keep things interesting, and which keep The Apostles from sounding too much like anyone else – almost a cross-cultural take on West African rhythms, on titles that include "I'm Sorry I Made You Cry", "Black Is Beautiful", "Don't Huzzle For Love", "Enyim", "Please Yourself", "Ndi Nkwa", and "Today Is The Tomorrow". A lost little gem from Chet Baker – recorded with a gentle, homey feel that we really like! The album's not one of the standouts in Chet's catalog, but it's got a personal, almost intimate quality that we find really compelling – almost a broken soul sense of playing, with Chet stumbling a bit amidst relaxed backings by a small combo that includes Barney Kessel on guitar, and Paul Smith on piano and organ. The tunes are nothing fancy, but often quite nice – and the set includes a number of original tunes written by Steve Allen that get past the obvious Baker numbers. You can hear Paul C's influence in the edits, the tightness of the beats and the layering and chopping of the samples, which definitely pushes this set to higher level. The rhymes are impressive, too – especially in the heavier, rawer and harder hitting tracks. Solid duo rap and tight production from the Hollis, Queens crew. A Kenyan funk combo from the 70s – and one who've got a groove that definitely lives up to the striking image on the cover! The set brings together obscure singles and album tracks from Black Savage – a group who sing in English throughout, and also draw plenty of influence from American soul acts as well – but always with a vibe that filters the music through a slightly fuzzy sort of veil – creating lots of weird, wild elements on the guitars as well as the vocals – both of which seem to be pretty processed in the production! There's almost a Westbound Records sort of spirit to the record at times – that trippy blend of funk and psych that was a Detroit hallmark at the start of the 70s – although a few other tunes have a more sing/song, catchy sort of approach. Fantasy, 1975/1976. New Copy ... $11.99 12.98
2 classics from The Blackbyrds – back to back on a single CD! City Life is a fantastic album from the legendary jazz funk combo – a bit smoother than their first, but that's the great thing about it! The record has the band getting even tighter than before – coming up with an amazing jazz-inflected funk groove that still leaves us breathless after all these years – and which is the perfect fusion of jazz and soul that was going down with the best groups in the mid 70s. The best example of this sound can be heard on the massive cut "Rock Creek Park" – which begins with a wonderful bass on the intro, a killer moogy keyboard bit, and a super-catchy chorus that goes "doin' it in the park," which you should recognize in about 30 seconds! The rest of the album is great too – and titles include the classic sample track "Love So Fine" – plus "Happy Music", "Hash and Eggs", "Thankful Bout Yourself", and "All I Ask". Unfinished Business has The Blackbyrds are at the top of their game – working in a sweet blend of jazz, funk, and soul – all produced to perfection by their mentor Donald Byrd! The groove is quite similar to some of Byrd's best from the time – a bit fuller than the first few records by The Blackbyrds, thanks to the addition of larger horns – and put together in ways that really has them soaring towards the skies on waves or righteous soul! There's vocals on most tracks, but they really take equal place next to the group's wonderful instrumentation – especially the heady keyboards of the mighty Kevin Toney, still a key member of the combo at this point. Titles include "Party Land", "In Life", "Time Is Movin", "Lady", and "You've Got That Something". CD

Proof that the US Army had plenty going on during the 70s – as you'll hear from this killer set of military-produced grooves from East Of Underground! The set goes way past the previous East Of Underground reissue – to feature work by the groups Soap, Black Seeds, and Sound Trek – all wrapped up in a beautiful package that's as visually pleasing as the music is funky! The cuts here were all recorded by US Army servicemen during the height of the Vietnam war – as Army-issued albums designed to encourage recruitment (as if a few funky grooves could help offset the bad press the war was getting on TV!) But despite that odd origin, the music here is all pretty great – mostly covers of familiar tunes from the time, but recorded with a nicely gritty quality that's mighty nice – and which makes the overall feel of the records like digging into some lost small studio tapes – ala Numero! Now Again have done a great job of putting together the whole package, too – contributing a wealth of notes and photos, and really digging deep into the scene in which these unique records were created. Not only that, but the packaging also replicates the style of the original odd releases too! The set features a CD each of music by East Of Underground and Soap – plus another CD that brings together an unusual double LP by the groups Black Seeds and Sound Trek. Harold Melvin & The Blue NotesBe For Real – The PIR Recordings 1972 to 1975 (I Miss You/Black & Blue/To Be True/Wake Up Everybody/bonus tracks) (3CD set) ... CD
Philadelphia International/Soulmusic.com (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... $26.99 30.99
A fantastic collection – four classic Philly International albums from this legendary group – plus a CD of bonus material too! First up is I Miss You – a groundbreaking record that forever changed the course for male soul music in the 70s – a set that has the young Teddy Pendergrass fronting the Blue Notes with a sound that's completely sublime – a mix of rough and smooth, personal and polished – which really pushed the music forward strongly for generations! The strength of the record really comes through in these amazing long tracks that have Teddy speaking, then singing – "I Miss You" and "Be For Real" – delivering a message of mature, masculine power – very much in keeping with the new values that Philly International were putting forth. The whole album's great, though – a sophisticated soul masterpiece, with the tracks "Ebony Woman", "Yesterday I Had The Blues", and "Let It Be You". Next is Black & Blue – a killer batch of studio tracks, despite the live image of the group on the cover! The album's got a slightly more expansive feel than some of the other Teddy Pendergrass-era albums by The Blue Notes – almost a mini-symphony of soul, and one that takes arrangements from Bobby Martin, Norman Harris, and Vince Montana – and wraps the vocals up in a soaring, righteous sort of feel! The rougher, more personal Teddy Pendergrass style of I Miss You is folded a bit more into the harmonies of the rest of the group here – and the result is a powerful wave of soul that pushes The Blue Notes right to the top of the pack. The album features classics like "The Love I Lost" and "Is There A Place For Me" – plus other nice material like "Concentrate On Me", "It All Depends On You", and "I'm Weak For You". To Be True is one of the legendary classics from the Philly International years of Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes – a time when the group was featuring the tremendous lead vocals of the great Teddy Pendergrass! The set's a stunner all the way through – one of the best Philly mixes of smooth, professional backings and deeply personal lyrics – as Teddy soars to the top of the mix with his excellent leads, and gets excellent support from the rest of the Blue Notes on harmonies – but also steps aside to make a bit of space to introduce singer Sharon Paige on one cut, who'd have a greater role in the group in years to come. The songwriting, production, and other Sigma Studios touches are sublime – and titles include "Hope That We Can Get Together Soon", "Where Are All My Friends", "Bad Luck", "To Be True", "Nobody Could Take Your Place", and "All Because Of A Woman". On Wake Up Everybody, Teddy Pendergrass and crew get a bit more political than on earlier releases, and adopt the righteous bubbling soul groove that had put the O'Jays over the top a few years earlier – with incredible results! The title cut – "Wake Up Everybody" – would prove to be a great example of the political Philly International hit formula applied to socially conscious themes, but the record probably scored even bigger with the club crossover hit "Don't Leave Me This Way". Other tracks include "Keep On Lovin You", "Tell The World How I Feel About Cha Baby", "I'm Searching For A Love", and "You Know How To Make Me Feel So Good" – the latter two of which also feature female vocals by Sharon Paige. Bobby Martin, Norman Harris, and Ronnie Baker did the arrangements – and this was Teddy's last LP with the group. CD3 features bonus tracks – some of them nice and long – titles that include "I Miss You (live)", "Everybody's Talkin", "Bad Luck (Tom Moulton mix)", "Don't Leave Me This Way (Tom Moulton mix)", "The Love I Lost (live)", and "If You Don't Know Me By Now (live)". Sun RaAntique Blacks ... LP
Art Yard/Kindred Spirits (Netherlands), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 35.98
Amazing work from Sun Ra – record that really features a great range of sounds and styles, and a heck of a lot of soul as well! Ra plays some especially nice rocksichord on the set – that freaky, fuzzy keyboard that comes off sounding like a guitar, even though it's played with keys – and there's some spiritual undercurrents to the set that are different than some of Ra's other albums with the instrument – some deeply feeling rhythms and soulful, spiritual expressions that really belie the Space Is The Place generation in which the album was cut. A few recitations imbue the record with a bold sense of poetry, which seems to be carried through strongly in the instrumentation too – especially on John Gilmore's tenor lines, which almost have a Shepp-like quality at points. Other players include Marshal Allen and Danny Davis on alto, Ahk Tal Ebah on trumpet, Clifford Jarvis on drums, and Sly on electric guitar – and titles include "Song No 1", "There Is Change In The Air", "Antique Blacks", "Would I For All That Place", "Ridiculous I & The Cosmos Me", and "This Song Is Dedicated To Nature's God". ✨✧ Sun RaAstro Black ... CD
Impulse/Modern Harmonic, 1973. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
One of the darkest Sun Ra albums of the early 70s – and a set that's also a bit unusual in his catalog as well! The album was issued during Ra's run with Impulse Records – a period that mostly saw the label reissue previous records from the Saturn catalog – save for a rare few like this one, which was an unusual all-new batch of material for Impulse! Because of that, it's been a bit overlooked in later years – maybe missed as less authentic, but actually some of the most striking sounds that Ra created at the time! There's a very strong tension here between electric and acoustic elements – not in the usual fusion-based way, but instead with this vibe that often has the electric instruments providing darker areas of sound, while the woodwinds and percussion have a way of humanizing the proceedings. June Tyson's also at her moodiest on the title track, "Astro Black" – and other titles include "Hidden Spheres", "Discipline 99", and the long improvisation "Cosmo Fire". CD

Sault have always been fantastic, but it also seems that with each new release, they get even more powerful and progressive – opening up a more radical agenda that really comes through in their music! The group don't state their position with the title of the record – which is essentially untitled – but their message comes through loud and clear in the way the righteous lyrics mix perfectly with their spare, stark instrumentation – a range of rhythms that often make it hard to tie Sault to any one category or scene, but which also makes the record bristle with excitement – on titles that include "Don't Shoot Guns Down", "Wildfires", "Sorry Ain't Enough", "Black Is", "Stop Dem", "Hard Life", "Hold Me", "Only Synth In Church", "Why We Cry When We Die", and "Bow", which features a guest appearance from Michael Kiwanuka. ✨✧ ShoesBlack Vinyl Shoes – The Anthology 1973 to 1978 (Black Vinyl Shoes/Bazooka/One In Versailles/bonus tracks) (3CD set) ... CD
Cherry Red (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 3CD ... About November 4, 2021
A great package of work from Shoes – one of the finest acts to come from the Illinois scene in the 70s – presented here with three full albums, and bonus tracks too! First up is their seminal Black Vinyl Shoes – an album that may well stand as the group's lasting treasure! The set's got a sharp-edged quality that still sounds pretty tremendous all these many years later – power pop, but without any commercial elements to smooth out its energy – served up with a raw, earnest quality that's neither punk nor hard rock – yet which deserved to be praised every bit as much as the best contemporary efforts in those genres too! These guys have a hell of a way with a hook, yet never hit you over the head with it either – and there's a lack of posturing that's really refreshing – a key difference between the sound of Shoes and their bigger Northern Illinois contemporaries Cheap Trick – an attitude that's different than, yet not that far off from the energy of The Replacements to come. Titles include "Capital Gain", "Boys Don't Lie", "She'll Disappear", "Fatal", "It Really Hurts", "Nowhere So Fast", and "Fire For Awhile". Bazooka is the long-lost first album from Shoes – recorded at home, and even rawer than any later releases – appearing here on vinyl for the very first time! The group are already pretty amazing at this early point – right on the money, and almost with more of a punkish vibe at points – although other tunes have them ripping out these mean guitar lines that are definitely way too ballsy for early punk. The songwriting is superb – amazing considering how young the guys were, and that the record was really just recorded for their own initial interest – and not a bigger company looking for a hit. There's also more darkness than in later years too – not everywhere, but at key points that make for a nice edge to the record. Titles include "Pinheads", "Love Took A Turn", "Rock Your One", "Along With Love", "New Meat", "I'm Brazen", "The Atlantic", "My Anisette", and "Educated". Last is One In Versailles – the debut album from Shoes – a cracker of a first record from any band, but a set that hardly made a dent at the time – given that it was only pressed in a limited run of 300 copies! That doesn't stop it from being a real moment of greatness, though – because the set sparkles with charm right from the very first note – nicely less polished than Shoes' later work, especially their major debut on Elektra – with a raspy intensity that really furthers the ideas wrapped up in the core of the tunes – and which almost comes across with the earnest yet relaxed quality of The Feelies in parts – even though this one was cut years before the emergence of that group! Titles include "One Night", "The Sun", "Banjo", "Eggroll Rock", "Do I Get So Shy", "Un Dans Versailles", "Kristine", and "Dance In Your Sleep". Comes in a box with a big booklet of notes – and 18 bonus tracks that include "Rock & Roll Freak", "My Husband's Home", "I'd Like To Take You Out Again", "Nothing Means More", "I Can Make It (demo)", "I Wanna Hide", "Okay (Bomp version)", "Tomorrow Night (Bomp version)", "Baby's Gone", "Ever Again", "Lucky Tail", "Capital Offense, "She'll Disappear (demo)", "I'll Take You Away (alt)", and "Like I Told You (second version)". Vertigo, 1979. Near Mint- ... $39.99
Pure magic from Thin Lizzy – and a set that has them in the same cool, compressed territory they unlocked on their classic Jailbreak album! Like that set, all the best elements here are firmly in place – fantastic vocals and basslines from Phil Lynott, searing guitar from Gary Moore, and a sense of focus and songwriting that really keeps things interesting – edgey, but catchy – never too commercial, but always right on the money. The whole thing's done with complex songwriting and great time changes – exposing a deeper, almost jazzier influence to the group's sound – that special Thin Lizzy different that always set them apart. Titles include "Do Anything You Want To", "Toughest Street In Town", "Get Out Of Here", "Roisin Dubh", "With Love", "Waiting For An Alibi", and "S&M". LP, Vinyl record album

24 - Carat BlackGone – The Promises Of Yesterday ... CD
Numero, 1974. New Copy ... $7.99 14.98
An amazing musical discovery – the lost second album from 24 Carat Black – recorded right after the band's legendary debut for Stax Records, but unissued for over 30 years! All the righteous styles of the group's famous Ghetto Misfortune's Wealth classic are fully in place here – and if anything, the record has an even headier feel overall – really complicated sounds that are often deeply spiritual, but still have that snaking, bassline-driven, slow funk quality that we love in the group! The tunes each feel like mini-symphonies in soul – and although the themes center more around love than politics, they're done in a way that goes way past any sexy soul cliches of the time. The group is amazingly laidback – slow-stepping into each tune with a care and confidence that's amazing – and letting the cuts come into their own organically, but always with a mystical sense of order. Numero have done a wonderful job excavating this work – remastering the tapes for great sound, and telling the full story of the group and their too-short career. Titles include "The Best Of Good Love Gone", "I'll Never Let You Go", "Gone The Promises Of Yesterday", "I Begin To Weep", "I Want To Make Up", and "I Don't Love You". CD

It's been 10 years since 2000 Black first started catching our ears, and they've never sounded better! This album's way more than just a "next set" of grooves from the pair – as it really shows a growth over time, a unified musical vision that has them hitting some of the same cosmic heights as 4 Hero! And although we've always loved 2000 Black tunes in the past, this set is a really well-developed album – balanced beautifully between skittish rhythms, soaring soul, and some occasional jazzy touches – especially on the keyboards from Dego and Kaidi Tatham. As before, there's some wonderful vocal talents on board – including Nadine Charles, Lady Alma, Ferraz, Rasiyah, Ty, Vanessa Freeman, and Face – all of whom contribute strong individual voices to the album's righteous sound. Titles include "Dealt A Bad Hand", "Simple Sacrifice", "Don't Make Me Hurt You", "A Little More", "What's It To Be", "Take It Back", "Move Over", "Got Me Puzzled", "If You Got 3 Wishes", and "Lost It". Gospel Roots/Honest Jons (UK), Late 70s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $29.99
A really really beautiful little compilation – one with a sound that's every bit as powerful as the image on its cover! The music here all comes from the Gospel Roots label of Miami soul powerhouse TK Records – a key force in mainstream soul in the 70s, but also a company who issued some excellent spiritual material at the time! The work here isn't rootsy gospel – and instead reflects all the hip, righteous changes that were coming into the music during the 70s – bits of blacksploitation funk in the rhythms, powerful lead singers upfront, and an impeccable production style that often mixed deep soul vocals with modern soul presentation. This side of the TK legacy has been crucially ignored over the years – but this wonderful package more than corrects that fault – by offering up some of the key tracks from the Gospel Roots label, alongside a lavish booklet that's filled with notes, photos, and record images – all recounting the overdue tale of this great music. Not all artists are southern – there's a number from up north, and even a few from Chicago – and titles include "Tell Me" by The Fantastic Family Aires, "After The Rain" by Pastor TL Barrett, "Will You Save Me" by The Jordan Singers, "Never Say What You Want" by The Phillipians, "Help Me To Carry On" by The Fabulous Luckett Brothers, "I've Got To Make A Change" by Bright Clouds, "Wake Up Everybody" by The O'Neal Twins, "On Jesus Program" by The Original Sunset Travelers, "Blessed Be The Name Of God" by The Brooklyn All Stars, and "Christians Catch Hell" by Reverend Edna Isaac & The Greene Sisters. VariousLife Aquatic – Original Soundtrack (blue vinyl pressing) (2021 Black Friday Release) ... LP
Hollywood, 2004. New Copy 2LP ... On November 26, 2021
The soundtrack to the second most underrated of Wes Anderson's films – the strangely wonderful seafaring adventure the Life Aquatic! The heart of the album is the delicate, beautiful solo acoustic covers of David Bowie tunes by Brazil's Seu Jorge – plus some great synth and symph scoring by Devo's Mark Mothersbaugh. Seu commandeers "Rebel Rebel", "Life On Mars", "Starman" and "Five Years" – his gruff, but sweet vocals crooning mostly in Portugese, while Bowie's instantly identifiable melodies easily float to the surface. Mothersbaugh's soundtrack compositions get better and more extroverted with each project, this one branching off from the faux stuffy baroque touches he spun so wonderfully on Rushmore and the Royal Tennenbaums, and even cooking up some blunt, old school synthesizer noisiness that'll please the Spuds! This being a Wes Anderson film, there's some leftfield hits and pop oddities, too. 20 tracks in all, including score pieces, the Jorge/Bowie tunes, plus "Shark Attack Theme" and more by Sven Libaek, "La Nina De Puerta Oscura" by Paco De Lucia, "Search And Destroy" by Iggy & The Stooges, "30 Century Man" by Scott Walker, "Gut Feeling" by Devo and more. As was the case with Anderson's Bottlerocket, the film's critics will slowly shrink into silence over the next few years and the Life Aquatic will be very fondly remembered. Strut (UK), Late 70s/1980s/Early 90s. New Copy ... $14.99 15.99
A great look at one of our favorite record labels of all time – a company that was one of the first we ever worked together with, back when we started Dusty Groove – and whose music has been a huge inspiration to us for decades! Black Fire is a really special record label from the DC area – not just a jazz imprint, but more of an artistic collective – maybe similar to what Tribe Records was to the Detroit scene of the 70s, but also more open to more soulful sounds too – which is what really makes so many of these tracks so great – as they have a perfect balance between jazz, funk, and soul – kind of that through-line that the Chicago scene had as things moved from Sun Ra, to Phil Cohran, on to the Pharoahs and Earth Wind & Fire! That trajectory is key here – as many of the players were rooted in more avant jazz styles, but were also eager to communicate their message in ways that were more universal – which is why the music here has such lasting appeal over the years – as it's filled with messages of love and peace, life and pride – with an intensity that maybe makes these tracks every bit as important now as when they were first recorded. The best-known group on the set is Oneness Of Juju, but there's work from the whole spectrum of Black Fire artists – tracks that include "Look At The People" by Wayne Davis, "Doin The Carvin For Thabo" by Lon Moshe, "African Rhythms (live 1975)" by Oneness Of Juju, "Children Of Tomorrow's Dreams" by Theatre West, "People" by Experience Unlimited, "Follow Me" by Okyerema Asante, "Third House" by Southern Energy Ensemble, and "Drummers From Ibadan" by Byard Lancaster. A fantastic album from this legendary jazz funk combo – a bit smoother than their first, but that's the great thing about it! The mad music for the set was composed by Antonio Carlos Jobim, with lyrics by Vincius De Moraes – and performed by Luiz Bonfa on guitar – but despite such prime bossa pedigree, the whole thing's got a sound that goes way beyond the familiar – a crazy mix of batucada percussion, samba rhythms, bossa guitar, and loads of sound effects from the film – so much so that the first half of the record is almost a sound-for-sound replication of the first 20 minutes of the movie! The sound collage is amazing – an extremely unique approach to soundtrack representation, and one that's never been done so beautifully since. A truly breathtaking record, filled with mindblowing sounds – and an early example of the genius that would explode in 60s music in Brazil. Maybe one of the last moments of genius from Public Enemy – and a set that still has their power and politics very much at the top of their game! The message may even be more powerful than the music at points – no surprise for Chuck D and crew at this point in their career – but in comparison to so many other weaker records from the time, the whole thing's still held up very well with age – and has managed to slide strongly into the rest of their previous catalog. Titles include their popular "Bring Tha Noize" duet with Anthrax – plus "Get the F–- Outta Dodge", "Can't Truss It", "By The Time I Get To Arizona", "Nighttrain", "Shut Em Down", "A Letter To The New York Post", "1 Million Bottlebags", and "More News At 11". ✨✧ Black Devil's MakaliYou & Me/I Found A Note ... 7-inch
Afro 7 (Finland), Late 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Rare funky tracks from late 70s Kenya – both of which are pretty darn groovy! "You & Me" has a midtempo groove that's laced with these haunting spacey keyboards – and the English language vocals build things up in a nice way – with lots of catchy lyrics, but in a style that's as spare and moody as the instrumentation! "I Found A Note" has this pulsing clubby vibe, but again one that's relatively open – lots of room for a slightly exotic keyboard line next to more familiar rhythms – and more unusual vocals in the mix, plus a cool spacey keys breakdown near the end! 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ BlackbyrdsCity Life ... LP
Fantasy, 1975. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A fantastic album from this legendary jazz funk combo – a bit smoother than their first, but that's the great thing about it! Fantasy, Late 70s. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A cool collection of funky tracks from the Fantasy Records catalog of the 70s – the kind of hip cuts that were often better than mainstream disco – and which sometimes used a bit of jazz in the instrumentation as well! There's a few spacey themes here, but maybe not as much as you'd guess from the cover and title – but that's OK with us, because we can totally dig these down to earth grooves! Titles include "Let's Get Crackin" by Shock, "I Like It" by Players Association, "Funky Force" by Larry Williams, "Space Is The Place" by Pleasure, "Close Encounters Of A Funky Kind" by Fat Larry's Band, "Space Bass" by Slick, "Messages From The Stars (long wave mix)" by Rah Band, "Do It 4 U" by Starship Connection, and "Sparkle (single edit)" by Fat Larry's Band. ✨✧ Andrew Lamb/Tom Abbs/Michael Wimberley/Guillermo BRhapsody In Black ... CD
No Business (Lithuania), 2008. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Andrew Lamb is billed as "The Black Lamb" here – a nice nickname, given the earthy quality of the set! The group's got two percussionists at its core – Michael Wimberly and Guillermo E Brown – both players with different energies that help expand the roots of the record – while Tom Abbs builds up its trunk with his organic lines on bass, plus a bit of tuba and didjeridoo too. Lamb unfolds these evocative lines on saxes and flute – and even a bit of conch shell too, handled with a wonderfully exotic tone that's not gimmicky at all. Tracks are quite long, and build with a rich feel that makes the album one of the most soulful we've ever heard on the No Business label – and titles include "Initiation", "Song Of The Miracle Lives", "To Love In The Rain", and "Rhapsody In Black". ✨✧ Sly & The Revolutionaries with Jah ThomasBlack Ash Dub (180 gram vinyl pressing) ... LP
Trojan/Music On Vinyl (UK), 1980. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The mighty Sly Dunbar, working here on drums, in some very heady company – a wicked dub-heavy group that includes longtime partner Robbie Shakespear on bass – plus Gladdy Anderson on piano, Ansel Collins on organ, and Bingy Bunny and Bo Peep on guitars! The music is raw and stripped-down – produced by Jah Thomas at Channel One, mixed by Prince Jammy at King Tubby's – but with a rock-solid vibe that grabs you musically in a way that all of these many references hardly do justice! At a time when Sly was breaking big in the mainstream, working on lots of imported productions too, the groove is still very down to earth, and back to the amazing sound that he and his confreres first brought to the Kingston scene much earlier in the 70s. All the songs are titled in tribute to intoxicating substances –and include "Marijuana", "Herb", "Collie", "Lambsbread", "Rizla", "Acapulco Gold", "Black Ash", "White Rum", "Cocaine", and "LSD". No Mirage here – as the album's got a presence that's impossible to deny – a solid, soulful uttering from this key Chicago combo of the 70s! The group's led by reedman Ari Brown – better known for his later avant work – and they've got a wicked blend of keyboards and horns with lots of complicated touches, played out over funky rhythms that are completely mindblowing! The great Ken Chaney plays keyboards, and in addition to Brown's reeds, the set also features trumpet from Frank Gordon, trombone from Steve Galloway, and bass from Rufus Reid – plus cool percussion from Arlington Davis and Drasheer Khalid. Most cuts are instrumental, and recorded beautifully – but one number, "The Ultimate Frontier", also features vocals from Anita Jefferies. Clear Blue SkyClear Blue Sky ... CD
Vertigo/Universal (Japan), 1970. New Copy ... $13.99
An insanely ripping little record – one that comes on with all the raw power of the heaviest work by Black Sabbath or Led Zeppelin at the time – even though these guys never hit that sort of fame! The group's a trio with an incredibly deft touch – able to make the simple combination of guitar, bass, and drums explode in wonderfully fresh ways – with some quick-changes that really leave us breathless, and really show off their amazing talents – but never in a way that's overdone at all – as these guys have more of the bottom-end, blues-inspired appeal of Zeppelin during their early years. Vocals are by guitarist John Simms, who's also got a wild way of singing – and titles include "The Rocket Ride", "I'm Comin Home", "Birdcatcher", "My Heaven", "You Mystify", and "Tool Of My Trade". A stunning session by Ornette, and one that always seems to get overlooked in discussions of his albums for Atlantic! His quartet here features the amazing Scott LaFaro on bass, and a young Ed Blackwell on drums – both of whom give the tracks an amazing pulse that brings new energy out of Ornette and Don Cherry's solos – working in a modal groove that's as catchy as it is modern! All tracks are named after initials of titles of books by Sigmund Freud, including "T & T" (Totem & Taboo), "C&D"(Civilization and Discontent), "W.R.U.", and "R.P.D.D.". ✨✧ ColoursColours ... CD
Dot/World Psychedelia (Korea), 1968. New Copy ... $4.99
One of the best American psyche albums we've heard from the late 60s – a near-perfect record that's head and shoulders above the rough experimentation of most other groups from the period! Colours spell their name with a definite British twist, and there's clearly a Beatles influence going on here – a sound that's almost pre-Sgt Peppers, but which has wonderfully complicated time changes, vocal parts, and production techniques that must have cost a pretty penny to such a little-known group! Horns and strings are arranged by Dave Roberts, and handled with a sensitivity that almost matches The Zombies' best at times – and the tunes themselves are a fresh variety of odd themes, including one number about robbing a liquor store. Titles include "Brother Lou's Love Colony", "Bad Day At Black Rock Baby", "Love Heals", "Rather Be Me", "I'm Leaving", "Cataleptic", "Don't You Realize", and "Lovin". CD

The mighty Dego is one of the few talents who can keep coming up with unusual rhythms year after year – the kind of mindblowing music that first made us love him so many years back, touched with an even more sophisticated understanding of the jazzy currents that he works with! Dego's the main creator here – playing Fender Rhodes, piano, bass, and lots of other keyboards – and the set has some slight guitar and help in the studio from Matt Lord – plus flute from Kaidi Tatham on "She Is Virgo" and "This Is A Message To You" – the latter of which has a guest vocal appearance from Nadine Charles. The whole set is wonderful – a further extension of the 4Hero universe – and titles include "What's Good For You", "Recovered Memories", "Stained With The Tears On Their Faces", "Is It The Whole Truth", and "The Negative Positive". Brilliant basswork from Henry Franklin – one of the hippest cats handling his instrument on the west coast in the 70s – working here with a wicked ensemble of soulful, righteous players! ✨✧ Marvin GayeTrouble Man (original gatefold pressing) ... LP
Tamla, 1972. Very Good Gatefold ... $24.99
Marvin Marvin Marvin – just when we thought you couldn't impress us any more, you took it to the next level! Trouble Man is a heck of a wonderful surprise from an artist that most folks really only knew as a singer – a fantastically funky blacksploitation soundtrack, conceived and composed by Marvin himself – and served up with some occasional vocals that work beautifully with the album's cool instrumental grooves! The set's easily one of Gaye's most righteous records ever – almost a second chapter to What's Going On, but more instrumental – and like that classic set, it really shows the whole new range of vision that Marvin was able to work in the studio. Gaye gets a bit of arranging help on some tracks from Gene Page and JJ Johnson – and the album's filled with great cuts – including the landmark "T Plays It Cool", plus other gems like "Don't Mess With Mister T", "Main Theme From Trouble Man", "The Break In", and "T Stands For Trouble". Very funky, very sophisticated, and very soulful! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Dizzy Gillespie/Mal WaldronCool World ... CD
Philips/Verve, 1963. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A brilliant little soundtrack from Dizzy Gillespie – composed by Mal Waldron, and played by Diz with a sound and sensitivity that few of his other 60s albums can match! The feel here is quite bold and righteous – a perfect accompaniment for the documentary-like black and white images of Shirley Clarke's film – set in Harlem, and mostly recorded on location in the early 60s! Dizzy's tone is wonderful – bracing one minute, blue-toned the next – and the rest of the group is wonderful too – with James Moody on tenor and flute, Kenny Barron on piano, Chris White on bass, and Rudy Collins on drums. There's a richly expressive feel to the music that makes the set hold up fantastically both as a soundtrack and as a jazz album – and titles include "The Pusher", "Duke's Fantasy", "Coney Island", "Bonnie's Blues", "Duke's Awakening", "Coolie", and "Enter Priest". Black Lion/Muzak (Japan), 1967. New Copy 2CD Gatefold ... $24.99
An expanded version of this famous series of recordings – originally issued on two different records by the Black Lion label, and expanded here with bonus material! The record's n astounding live set from Johnny Griffin – recorded at the famous Club Montmartre in Copenhagen, Dexter Gordon's famous home in the late 60s – but a place that was also a showcase for the new sort of energy that Griffin was bringing to his horn at the time! The record crackles with the kind of free energy of the best Montmartre sessions – long tracks and compelling solos, stretched-out versions of tunes you may recognize, but which are transformed nicely by Griff's great solo work – and by a rhythm section that features Kenny Drew on piano, Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass, and Albert Heath on drums! Titles include "The Man I Love", "Blues For Harvey", "Indiana", "Old Folks", "You Leave Me Breathless", "Night In Tunisia", "Leave Me Alone Blues", "All The Things You Are", "The Masquerade Is Over", "Sophisticated Lady", "Hush A Bye", and "Wee". ✨✧ Leroy HutsonHutson II ... LP
Curtom, 1976. Good ... $7.99
One of our favorite soul albums ever – a complete masterpiece from the mighty Leroy Hutson, easily one of the greatest soul singers of the 70s! The album's got a warmth that's amazing, yet also still manages to groove all the way through – hitting a subtle, almost mellow vibe that's like Marvin Gaye or Roy Ayers at their best – but somehow even better because the album's a lot less familiar than their work, and has a freshness that grabs us again and again over the years! Hutson arranged and produced the whole set himself – and the scope of his talents in the studio is amazing – tight on the rhythms, but broadly expansive on the other instrumentation – with a mix of intimacy and class that few other records from the 70s could ever hope to match. Perfect all the way through, and filled with genius cuts that include "Don't It Make You Feel Good", "I Think I'm Falling In Love", "Love to Hold You Close", "Flying High", "I Do I Do Want To Make Love To You", "Blackberry Jam", and "Sofunkstication". Jackie & RoySpring Can Really Hang You Up The Most (aka Jackie & Roy) ... CD
Black Lion/Storyville (UK), 1955. Used ... $4.99
One of the first albums ever from the team of Jackie Caine and Roy Kral – and one of the best, too! The album's got a relaxed, open-ended approach to jazz vocals that already carries all the hallmarks of the Jackie & Roy style – wordless scatting on some tunes, playful lyrical interplay on others, and a focus on Jackie's ballad talents on some of the gentler numbers – all wrapped up in small combo backing that's sensitive, creative, and modern – yet never in a way that overwhelms the vocals. It's hard to match the poise, class, and cleverness of this one – and the album easily set a new standard for vocal jazz in the 50s! Titles include a few great early tunes by Tommy Wolf – the songwriter who would become so important for the pair – and backing is by Roy on piano, Barney Kessel on guitar, Red Mitchell on bass, and Shelly Manne on drums. Titles include "Let's Take A Walk Around The Block", "You Smell So Good", "Listen Little Girl", "Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most", "Bill's Bit", "Dahuud", "I Wish I Were In Love Again", and "Lover".
