Black DiamondA Held Space ... CD
Woolgathering, 2020. New Copy ... $12.99
The duo of Artie Black and Hunter Diamond – the former of whom plays tenor, alto, clarinet, and other small instruments – the latter on tenor, clarinet, and some very cool percussion elements too! All the music here is improvised, recorded over a marathon five hour session, then stripped down to the essence of the recordings – presented here with no overdubs, but a fantastic sense of sound throughout – very organic, and in a way that's different than most other free improvised music of this nature. At times, the duo almost echo the sense of space that we live in Jimmy Giuffre's more free-thinking material – and titles include "Sea Change", "Curio", "Son Of The Cricket Caller", "Adanab", "The Long Arc", and "Brothers Arm In Arm". ✨✧ VariousSoul Of A Nation – Afro-Centric Visions In The Age Of Black Power – Underground Jazz, Street Funk, & The Roots Of Rap 1968 to 1979 (with bonus download) ... LP
Soul Jazz (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic look at the righteous current of energy that swept through American music at the end of the 60s – that huge wave of knowledge and political inspiration that still stands as one of our favorite moments in jazz and soul! The Civil Rights generation had gotten some things accomplished, but not everything – and a new wave of action arose in various scenes of the underground – not just pushing the musical formats past anything that had happened before, but also doing so with a strong message of pride and empowerment! This collection surveys some of the best tracks of that moment – and also provides a great batch of historical notes to put the whole thing in context – done in collaboration with the book of the same name, but equally great as a soundtrack and document on its own. The package is overflowing with Dusty Groove classics – and titles include "Sweet Songs" by Sarah Webster Fabio, "Surtal Ihklas" by Doug Carn, "Vibes From The Tribe" by Phil Ranelin, "Desert Fairy Princess" by Horace Tapscott & The Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra, "Sounds From The Bush" by The Mandingo Griot Society with Don Cherry, "Is It Too Late" by Duke Edwards & The Young Ones, "Strong Men" by David McKnight, "Black Narcissus" by Joe Henderson, "Malcolm X" by Phil Cohran & The Artistic Heritage Ensemble, "Mother Of The Future" by Carlos Garnett, "Red Black & Green" by Roy Ayers, "African Rhythms" by Oneness Of Juju, and "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" by Gil Scott-Heron. AmbianceInto A New Journey ... CD
Da Mon/BBE (UK), 1982. New Copy Gatefold ... $14.99 18.99
A really beautiful record from the Ambiance ensemble – a group led by reedman Daoud Abubakar Balewa – a musician with the same underground prominence as Plunky Nakabinde and Idris Ackamoor during the same generation! Like both of those artists, Daoud has a way of moving effortlessly between spiritual jazz and more soul-based styles – heard here on one of his standout records from the early 80s, which blends his own work on a variety of saxes with nicely flowing accompaniment on piano, percussion, guitars, and a slight touch of Fender Rhodes – mostly instrumental, but with a few vocal moments from time to time! The vibe is late spiritual jazz – not as tightly tied to Coltrane-based modes, and nicely finding its own space in the universe – on titles that include "Eastwind", "Something Better", "Into A New Journey", and "The Arrival" – plus versions of "Black Narcissus", "500 Miles", and "Windows". A nice little 2CD set – one that features the full 1962 Carnegie Hall concert by Tony, with a second CD that gives the album enough space to add in a huge amount of previously unreleased tracks! The performance has Tony singing with both the trio of Ralph Sharon, and a larger orchestra – making for a good blend of the styles he'd been working on his early albums for Columbia, presented here in a way that has the unreleased tracks put in the same order as they were originally recorded – making for a full concert with hardly any breaks. The set boasts 44 tracks in all – with titles that include "Firefly", "The Rules Of The Road", "Without A Song", "It Amazes Me", "This Could Be The Start Of Something Big", "Lazy Afternoon", "My Ship", "Speak Low", "Fascinating Rhythm", "Just In Time", and "That Old Black Magic". Banda Black RioSuper Nova Samba Funk ... CD
Far Out (UK), 2011. New Copy ... $7.99 16.99
A brilliant new vision for the legendary Banda Black Rio – the pioneering samba, soul and funk combo that broke so much ground in the 70s and remain vital to this day – led here by William Magalhaes, in a mode that celebrates decades of the best Brazilian music, while fearlessly moving it forward! William's father Oberdan Magalhaes was a driving force behind the original Banda Black Rio, and we couldn't really imagine a more appropriate new vision for the group than his son's. William wrote or co-wrote each track and he sings, plays keys and synth, guitar, bass, drums and more. The expansive group brings a depth of percussion, horns, strings and vocals – delivering timeless and dexterous jazzy Brazilian funk and dancefloor soul. The guest list includes classic and contemporary greats like Seu Jorge, Elza Soares, Marcio Local, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil and others! Includes "Louis Lane" with Seu Jorge & Mano Brown, "Super Nova Samba Funk (9 No Samba)", "America Do Sul", "Isabela" feat Elza Soares and Cesar Camargo Mariano, "Samba Nova", "Quem Vem La" feat Marcio Local, "Deixa Estar" feat Aleh, "Lindos Olhos" feat Seu Jorge and Don Pixote, "Paname" feat Pyroman, "Final Feliz", "Irere" feat Gilberto Gil, "Aos Pes Do Redentor" feat Caetano Veloso and more. 16 tracks on the CD version. Burning SpearMarcus Garvey/Garvey's Ghost ... CD
Mango/Island (UK), 1975. New Copy ... $8.99
An absolute classic! If you can own only one reggae LP, this one's in the front running – it's as if the words crucial and conscious were created to define the sound Winston Rodney, Burning Spear & the Black Disciples capture on this landmark roots LP. Though this is the Island version which many claim was cleaned up a bit too much to appeal to white audiences (and the same for the dub set, which is included here), but we still think it's pretty powerful. The Black Disciples band, with Horse Wallace, Robbie Shakespeare, Family Man Barrett, Chinna Smith and others, carve out mighty dread rthythms, and producer Jack Ruby keeps the proceedings tight and right, with just the right dub effects laid over top on the dub cuts. Featuring the tracks "Slavery Days", "Marcus Garvey", "The Invasion", "Red, Gold, & Green", "Resting Place", and "Live Good", plus this CD issue adds the dub companion LP, Garvey's Ghost, the dubs "The Ghost", "I & I Survive", "Black Wa-Da-Da", "Brain Food", "Dread River", "Reggaelation" and more, for a total of 20 tracks in all! Aaron CohenMove On Up – Chicago Soul Music & Black Cultural Power ... Book
University Of Chicago, 2019. New Copy ... $16.99 20.00
A tremendous achievement from music writer Aaron Cohen – a book that finally gets at the deeper, richer story of Chicago soul – the spirit of empowerment and pride that have always made us so honored to be part of the Windy City legacy! Cohen picks up where other soul writers have left off on Chicago – really looking at the shifts into the 70s, which included greater ties to the means of production, and an increased role in the social agenda as well – all part of an evolution in songwriting styles, production techniques, and the growing power of the full length album over the 7" single! Cohen looks at many key figures of the time – Earth Wind & Fire, Chaka Khan & Rufus, Curtis Mayfield, Phil Cohran & The Artistic Heritage Ensemble – and the very well-researched book is a delight to read throughout – easily the deepest work that Cohen's ever given us. 234 pages, softcover, with some black and white images – and a selected discography too. ✨✧ Van Dyke ParksHistories – Old Black Joe/Souvenir De La Havane ... 7-inch
Corbett vs. Dempsey, 2020. New Copy (pic cover)... $5.99
Two very unusual works by the always-enigmatic Van Dyke Parks – both of them variations on older compositions from the middle of the 19th Century! "Old Black Joe" is a famous tune by Stephen Foster – but Parks' version here features this avant take on upright piano, mixed with odd-tuned guitar lines, muted vocals, and all these other strange sonic elements that actually make the whole thing feel like Christian Marclay is playing with the sound on a stack of vintage 78s! The whole thing makes for an unusual refraction of the sense of American history we often love in Van Dyke's music – given a slightly straighter spin on the flipside, which is a beautiful piano/violin/mandolin take on "Souvenir De La Havane", penned by Louis Gottschalk! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Modern Harmonic, 1950s/Early 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $25.99
A really cool side of work from the enigmatic Raymond Scott – the legendary midcentury figure who did a wealth of creative work in jazz, soundtrack, and electronic music fields! Turns out, Scott also recorded a heck of a lot of commercials in his studio – all in ways that embrace all the many modes that Raymond did so well – a good number of which also feature lead vocals from his wife Dorothy Collins – a great recording star in her own right! The songs here are all pretty darn short – usually just a minute or less – but the set features a whopping 82 numbers in all, and is a fantastic representation of this lost side of the Raymond Scott legacy – all packaged beautifully with plenty of notes, and sound quality strong enough to move this material way past the demo archive status. Includes ads and jingles for a wide variety of products – from Hamm's Beer, to RCA TV, Gold Medal Flower, Teryton Cigarettes, Krystal Hamburgers, Sprite soda, Revlon Hair Spray, and other big products for the 50s homemaker! Also includes a few rare jingles sung by Mel Torme, too. CD

There have been a number of art books over the years about George Herriman – groundbreaking cartoonist and animator, and the creator of Krazy Kat – but this may be the first really well-done historical look at his live and creations – presented in a beautiful format that still features images throughout, but which is also very heavy on history and research as well! Author Michael Tisserand provides many pages of notes at the end to support his long research into Herriman – and the layout juxtaposes cartoons with the author's words, which are often a lot more down to earth than the images. 545 pages, hardcover, with black and white images throughout. Stunning work from one of the greatest players of the post-Coltrane generation – a classic session recorded overseas in the mid 70s, and one that's filled with soulful expressions from the great Billy Harper! Harper's tenor kicks off the set with an immediately gripping sound – as searing as Pharoah Sanders at his Impulse best – but driven on by searching, soaring modal rhythms that are all Billy's own – the kind of grooves he first forged with Max Roach, then really expanded on when given the freedom of a record like this. Other players include trumpeter Virgil Jones, pianist Joe Bonner, bassist David Friesen, and drummer Malcom Pinson – and titles include a killer take on "Croquet Ballet", which Harper originally recorded with Lee Morgan – plus the titles "Dance Eternal Spirits Dance" and "Call Of The Wild & Peaceful Heart". Now Again, Early 70s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Raw, rumbling outsider psych from Stephen David Heitkotter – a wild and raucous stream of rambling genius from the early 70s! There's a loose, bluesy approach at the core – with long songs and a disquieting, yet engrossing mood that makes the set one of the most compelling lost rock records of the early 70s. This amazing set of Cali bedroom psych (literally – it was recorded in a bedroom) has built up a deservedly lofty legacy in collectors circles, but it's also something of a mystery – which is what makes this Now Again issue such a treasure. The whole package has been very well researched, and long unanswered questions about Heitkotter and the recording(s) are answered at long last – in a solid booklet of of notes by Eothen Alapatt with rare photos, and an even rawer batch of bonus material. Titles include "Hangin All Night", "I Don't Mind", "Quaker Dog Got Away", "Cadillac Woman" and "Fly Over The Moon" – plus 6 more untitled tracks/demos. Amazing! CD

✨✧ Rahsaan Roland KirkDog Years In The Fourth Ring (Rare Live Material & Natural Black Inventions: Root Strata) ... CD
32 Jazz, 1960s/1997. Used 3 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the greatest contributions made by the 32 Jazz label so far has been the rich amount of classic Roland Kirk material they've released on the market. The best of Kirk's work has been out of print for years, and like the folks at 32 Jazz, we think that's a darn shame – which is why we're extra-excited about a set like this! This nicely (and strangely) packaged 3 CD set features 2 CDs worth of previously unreleased live material – recorded in the years 1964 to 1975, by jazz recordist/archivist George Bonafacio. The material is amazing, and definitely gives proof to the claim that Kirk's live sets were even more amazing than his studio recordings. There's a wealth of great stuff here that really opens up an understanding of Kirk's 60s and early 70s years – and titles include "Rahsaantalk", "Misterioso", "Jammin With A Wolf", "Sister Sadie", "Blues For Alice", and a very groovy "Multi-Horn Medley". And if that's not enough, the 3rd CD of the set features the totally rare Natural Black Inventions album, which Kirk recorded for Atlantic. The record's got an amazing sound: Roland plays solo (mostly), and without the aid of overdubbing, to create these amazing soundscapes of multiple horns and circular breathing. It's filled with these fantastic throbbing pulsating reed lines, with one horn blowing rhythm, and one playing an adventurous solo – and both being blown live a the same time! Tracks include "Black Root", "Raped Voices", "Day Dream", and "Something For Trane That Trane Could Have Said". 3 great CDs of material by one of our favorite-ever reed players – and nicely priced, if we do say so ourselves! ✨✧ Cal TjaderBlackhawk Nights (Night At The Blackhawk/Live & Direct) ... CD
Fantasy, 1958/1959. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
2 live cookers from Cal Tajder – back to back on a single CD! The set begins with Night At The Blackhawk – one of Cal's best late 50s dates for Fantasy Records – thanks to some smoking tenor sax from Jose "Chombo" Silva! The album has Cal working in the very comfortable territory of San Francisco's Blackhawk Nightclub – in a combo that also features familiar players Vince Guaraldi on piano, Al McKibbon on bass, Willie Boby on drums, and Mongo Santamaria on congas – all musicians who'd previously helped Tjader hit some of his best Latin grooves! But the addition of Silva on a few tracks here really makes the set crackle – giving it a gutsy, soulful fee that you don't always get on some of Tjader's other records. Tracks are longish – and titles include the nice original "Bill B", plus jazzy versions of "I Love Paris", "Blue & Sentimental", and "Night In Tunisia". Live & Direct is great live work from Cal Tjader – one of a number of sets but at his home turf of the Blackhawk Nightclub in San Francisco! The album's nicely laidback, with tracks that stretch out a bit more than Tjader's studio work for Fantasy Records – often hitting a slight Latin groove at times, but with a bit more of a straight jazz vibes feel overall! The great Lonnie Hewitt's on the group on piano, coloring in the tunes with some very soulful notes – and in addition to Cal's vibes, the rest of the lineup includes Victor Venegas on bass, and Willie Bobo on drums. Mongo Santamaria on congas and Rolando Lozano on flute join in on the track "Mambo Terrifico" – and other titles include "Racoon Straits", "Bad & The Beautiful", and "You Stepped Out Of A Dream". Note that the CD omits the track "The Continental" from Live & Direct – due to space restrictions. CD

A never-issued live set from Detroit's Contemporary Jazz Quintet – a group who were a key part of the Strata Records scene, and who are expanded here to a much larger lineup for this very freewheeling performance from 1973! The group's spiritual modernism is very strongly in place, but there's also some funky elements rumbling around in the rhythms – a vibe that's maybe somewhere in the territory of the double live electric albums from Miles Davis in the early 70s, but looser and with righteous energy that more strongly shows the lineup's ties to the Detroit scene. Players include Kenny Cox and Charles Eubanks on piano and keyboards, Ron English on guitar, Charles Moore on flugelhorn, Ron Brooks on bass, Marcus Townsend on saxes, Phil Mendelsohn on electronics, Danny Spencer and Bud Spangler on drums, and Adam Rudolph on congas – a large lineup that resonates with plenty of power together. The album features four long tracks, each without a title – and each a mighty nice jam! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Harold Melvin & The Blue NotesBe For Real – The PIR Recordings 1972 to 1975 (I Miss You/Black & Blue/To Be True/Wake Up Everybody/bonus tracks) (3CD set) ... CD
Philadelphia International/Soulmusic.com (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic collection – four classic Philly International albums from this legendary group – plus a CD of bonus material too! First up is I Miss You – a groundbreaking record that forever changed the course for male soul music in the 70s – a set that has the young Teddy Pendergrass fronting the Blue Notes with a sound that's completely sublime – a mix of rough and smooth, personal and polished – which really pushed the music forward strongly for generations! The strength of the record really comes through in these amazing long tracks that have Teddy speaking, then singing – "I Miss You" and "Be For Real" – delivering a message of mature, masculine power – very much in keeping with the new values that Philly International were putting forth. The whole album's great, though – a sophisticated soul masterpiece, with the tracks "Ebony Woman", "Yesterday I Had The Blues", and "Let It Be You". Next is Black & Blue – a killer batch of studio tracks, despite the live image of the group on the cover! The album's got a slightly more expansive feel than some of the other Teddy Pendergrass-era albums by The Blue Notes – almost a mini-symphony of soul, and one that takes arrangements from Bobby Martin, Norman Harris, and Vince Montana – and wraps the vocals up in a soaring, righteous sort of feel! The rougher, more personal Teddy Pendergrass style of I Miss You is folded a bit more into the harmonies of the rest of the group here – and the result is a powerful wave of soul that pushes The Blue Notes right to the top of the pack. The album features classics like "The Love I Lost" and "Is There A Place For Me" – plus other nice material like "Concentrate On Me", "It All Depends On You", and "I'm Weak For You". To Be True is one of the legendary classics from the Philly International years of Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes – a time when the group was featuring the tremendous lead vocals of the great Teddy Pendergrass! The set's a stunner all the way through – one of the best Philly mixes of smooth, professional backings and deeply personal lyrics – as Teddy soars to the top of the mix with his excellent leads, and gets excellent support from the rest of the Blue Notes on harmonies – but also steps aside to make a bit of space to introduce singer Sharon Paige on one cut, who'd have a greater role in the group in years to come. The songwriting, production, and other Sigma Studios touches are sublime – and titles include "Hope That We Can Get Together Soon", "Where Are All My Friends", "Bad Luck", "To Be True", "Nobody Could Take Your Place", and "All Because Of A Woman". On Wake Up Everybody, Teddy Pendergrass and crew get a bit more political than on earlier releases, and adopt the righteous bubbling soul groove that had put the O'Jays over the top a few years earlier – with incredible results! The title cut – "Wake Up Everybody" – would prove to be a great example of the political Philly International hit formula applied to socially conscious themes, but the record probably scored even bigger with the club crossover hit "Don't Leave Me This Way". Other tracks include "Keep On Lovin You", "Tell The World How I Feel About Cha Baby", "I'm Searching For A Love", and "You Know How To Make Me Feel So Good" – the latter two of which also feature female vocals by Sharon Paige. Bobby Martin, Norman Harris, and Ronnie Baker did the arrangements – and this was Teddy's last LP with the group. CD3 features bonus tracks – some of them nice and long – titles that include "I Miss You (live)", "Everybody's Talkin", "Bad Luck (Tom Moulton mix)", "Don't Leave Me This Way (Tom Moulton mix)", "The Love I Lost (live)", and "If You Don't Know Me By Now (live)". ✨✧ VariousYou Need This – An Introduction To Black Saint & Soul Note Records 1975 to 1985 (3LP set) ... LP
Black Saint/BBE (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 3LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A tremendous look at one of the coolest jazz labels of all time – and one that has an especially strong focus on the more spiritual side of its music! The paired Black Saint and Soul Note labels came along from the Italian scene right at a time when so many other American companies were shutting their doors – former spiritual jazz powerhouses like Strata East, Impulse, and Black Jazz were moving beyond the music, or disappearing entirely – which made the role of Black Saint/Soul Note such a crucial one! The company came into the game at a time of boundless creativity in American jazz – and really captured a post-Coltrane generation that was brimming over with fire and new ideas, but just needed a place to find expression – which it did at the label, who recorded dozens of albums in the space of less than a decade, nearly all of which have gone onto become classics over the years. And while there's a side of the label that's much more free jazz and avant garde, the cuts here reflect a Black Saint/Soul Note that's just slightly inside – tunes that are still freewheeling, but also have a rhythmic core – and the kinds of open, soaring solos that were first inspired in the 60s generation of Coltrane and Shepp. The choice of cuts is great – similar to the others in the If Music series – and titles include "Mr Seven" by M'Booom, "Joycie Girl" by Don Pullen with Sam Rivers, "Il Giro Del Giorno In 80 Mondi" by Enrico Rava, "Oasis" by Hamiet Bluiett, "Confessin" by John Stubblefield, "Joobubie" by George Adams & Dannie Richmond, "Verde Que Eu Te Quero Ver" by Rava String Band, "Down Home In New York" by Archie Shepp, "BK" by Air, and "The Nagual Julian" by Billy Bang Sextet. Strata/180 Proof, 1973. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock

The story of Michael and The Jackson 5 – all presented here in an array of fantastic materials all pulled together from the family archives! The book is stunning – hefty, full color, and with page after page of really great material – images of records, live shows, special events, and family happenings – all laid out in relatively chronological order – so that the visuals tell the story of the group and its growth – with the expected heavy focus on the 70s and 80s! Philadelphia International/Vocalion (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A pair of 70s gems from Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes! Black & Blue is classic Philly soul from Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes – a killer batch of studio tracks, despite the live image of the group on the cover! Numero, Early 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic addition to the too-small legacy of the legendary 24 Carat Black – a never-issued third album, brought together as a hell of an archival project by the folks at Numero! 24 Carat Black only ever issued one album back in the day – the mid 70s gem, Ghetto Misfortune's Wealth – put out by Stax Records, and barely circulated at the time. Yet the group grew in legend over the years – thanks to the righteous power and sophisticated funk of that record, which touched hip hoppers, crate-diggers, and rare soul collectors over the years – to a point where the group finally attained the legendary status they were never accorded in the 70s! This album is from later years, but really continues that legacy of well-written, thoughtfully-executed soul music – very different than some of the throwaway keyboard n beats record of the same period, and very much in the best 24 Carat Black legacy of unusual song structures, complicated arrangements, and standout presentation of its core ideas. Titles include "Skeleton Coast", "I Need A Change", "Your Love Is My Desire", "You're Slipping Away", "I'm Coming Back", and "Someone To Somebody". LP, Vinyl record album

The core group features Louis Myers on guitar and harmonica, Dave Myers on bass, and Fred Below on drums – joined by Eddie Taylor, Mickey Baker, and Jimmy Rogers on guitar at points – plus a bit of piano from the great Willie Mabon! The whole thing's excellent – very true to form, and more Delmark than some of the slicker blues recordings that were starting to show up at the time – on titles that include "Ace's Shuffle", "Tell Me Mama", "Take A Little Walk With Me", "Whole Lot Of Lovin", "Blues For Marcelle", and "Money Marbles & Chalk". The amazing debut of Be Bop Deluxe – a record that's made up of all sorts of familiar parts, yet somehow really manages to set itself apart as a whole! The young Bill Nelson is at the top of his game here – a hell of a guitarist, which we sometimes forget in his later work – and a vocalist with a sinister edge that gives the record a sense of darkness that matches the compressed production and overall moody vibe – a child of the Bowie/Bolan generation, but one that's a real black sheep of the family too! The strength of the record is impossible to sum up in easy words – but it's there for the hearing, right from the very first note – on titles that include "Jet Silver & The Dolls Of Venus", "Axe Victim", "Love Is Swift Arrows", "No Trains To Heaven", "Jets At Dawn", "Rocket Cathedrals", and "Third Floor Heaven". Great 2CD version features detailed notes from Bill Nelson – plus bonus tracks that include the original indie single "Teenage Archangel" and "Jets At Dawn" – plus the cuts "No Trains To Heaven (first mix)", "Axe Victim (first album version mix)", "Axe Victim (first version)", "Rocket Cathedrals (first version)", and "Night Creature (spoken word version)" – plus a remaster of the original stereo mix, and a new 2020 stereo mix too! Blundetto works with production help from Blackjoy – in a mode that might have been born in hip hop studio techniques, but which here has much more of a French post-colonial vibe – wrapping together different global elements, soulful expressions, and jazzy flourishes with effortless ease – into a style that's completely his own overall. Anthony Braxton/Richard TeitelbaumSilence/Time Zones ... CD
Black Lion (UK), 1969/1976. Used ... $14.99
A great CD that brings together 2 different albums by Braxton – one a mixture of electronics and reeds, the other a laidback trio recording in an AACM mode. The first tracks feature Braxton's 70s explorations with electronic music artist Richard Teitelbaum. Together, the pair laid down some excellent sax/moog improvisations that still sound pretty incredible today. Braxton's icy tone was a great match for Teitelbaum's spare linear sound, and the result was a few great records like this one. The rest of the record is trio work with Leroy Jenkins and Leo Smith – both very long tracks, stretched out and freely creative. The album features 4 long tracks – "Crossing", "Off The Top Of My Head", "Silence", and "Behemoth Dreams". CD

A long-overdue collection of all the mixes, side-projects, and rare "Nicola Conte version" tracks that have cropped up in the past decade or so – work that's every bit as great as the material Conte includes on his own albums and singles! Nicola Conte's not a remixer – he's a re-imaginer – and when he sets out to serve up his own version of a track, he often starts from scratch – using his own band, his own arrangements, and his own key elements – all of which turn any projects for other artists into grooves that are very Conte-directed – the kind of classic jazz-infused gems that Nicola's been laying down on his own Schema Records label for over a decade! This double-disc set is filled with amazing work that Conte's done for other folks – and it also include a few rare and unreleased tracks under his own name as well – a massive helping of music that's really mindblowing throughout – sure to please any fan of Nicola, as well as anyone who digs the artists included in the package. Nicola Conte tracks include "Castles In The Rain", "Charade", "New Blues", "When I Wish Upon A Star", "Solo", "Black Is The Graceful Veil (acoustic version)", "Groovy Samba", and "All Or Nothing At All", which features vocals by Jose James! Other cuts include Conte mixes and reworks of "Stolen Moments (Midnight Mood rework)" by Mark Murphy, "Yellow Daisies" by Fertile Ground, "So Danco Samba (Nicola Conte rework)" by Til Bronner, "Terra De Ninguem" by Sabrina Malheiros, "Take Off (Campi's Idea version)" by Marco Di Marco, "3 Corners (For Friends & Relatives version)" by Five Corners Quintet, "You Are" by Povo, "Our Love" by Luisito Quintero, "Healing Blue (shape of jazz to come version)" by Sunaga T Experience, "Lotus Sun" by Maki Mannami, "Heaven (west coast vibes rmx)" by Bitter:Sweet, "Quiet Nights (out of the cool version)" by Re:Jazz, "Elevated States" by Thunderball, "Mood Indigo" by Akiko, "Take Five (Nicola Conte rmx)" by Roberto Roena, and "Kerma Elastica (Nicola Conte rmx)" by Bobby Hughes Combination. A really wonderful project that was years in the making – a mix of American club and Brazilian elements – put together by a group that includes members of Azymuth and Banda Black Rio, as well as the legendary Arthur Verocai! Jose Roberto Bertrami's the strongest contributor here – and the music really echoes that great late 70s/early 80s point when the Azymuth fusion groove crossed over into tighter, funkier territory – coming off here with a sound that's got really universal appeal and a wickedly classic vibe overall – like some unusual cross-breeding of Brazilian grooves and Salsoul Records! Vocals are by Mia Mendes and Marcina Arnold, but the instrumentation is even better than the lyrics – filled with jazzy touches, blended with bits of strings, and perfectly produced all the way through. Really tremendous stuff – one of the freshest records we've heard from Far Out in years – with titles that include "Mystery", "Keep Believing", "Dead Dance", "The Last Carnival", "A Disco Supreme", "Vendetta", and "Don't Cha Know He's Alright". 2CD set features 8 more bonus remix tracks too! Gene Harris & The Three SoundsLive At The It Club ... CD
Blue Note, 1970. Used ... $9.99
This is the kind of reissue we like to see! Funky pianist Gene Harris had spent most of the 60s playing in a standard trio format with his group The Three Sounds – but by the time of this live set, the group was evolving into a monster jazz funk combo, and Harris was getting beautifully heavy handed in his approach to rhythm. This live set was recorded by Blue Note in 1970, but for some reason it was left unreleased until a few years ago – a decision that's really a mystery when you hear how funky some of the tracks are! Black Jazz bassist Henry Franklin is part of Harris' combo at the time, and the drummer is the nice tight Carl Burnett. The set includes some excellent versions of Monk Higgins tracks like "Funky Pullett" and "Sittin' Duck" – and Higgins also produced the whole thing for Blue Note. Very nice, and another great session we're glad was dug out of the vaults! CD

T Neck/Epic, 1969. Used ... $9.99
A stone cold funk album that forever changed the face of soul music – a bold shift in styles by the Isley Brothers at the end of the 60s, really setting the scene for their megafame of the next decade! The album's a follow up to the landmark It's Your Thing set – and it starts in the same space as that one, but goes arguably even deeper and harder in its groove – hitting a raw, sharp-edged approach to funk that's totally sinister – easily as great as anything coming out of the funky 45 underground, and a really strong message to the mainstream that these older hitmakers were ripe and ready for a deeper funk mode. The record doesn't have any of the hits of its predecessor – making it an even bigger treasure trove of under-discovered gems – great little tunes that are heavy on the drums, filled with rumbling bass, and cut with plenty of sharp-edged guitar. Titles include "Black Berries", "Vacuum Cleaner", "I Turned You On", "Was It Good To You", "Get Down Off The Train", "Feel Like The World", "Holding On", and "My Little Girl". CD

Reggae StringsReggae Strings/Reggae Strings Vol 2 (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Trojan/Doctor Bird (UK), 1972. New Copy ... $16.99
A great pair of records – plus a huge amount of bonus tracks too! First up is the debut Reggae Strings album – one of the most unique albums on the Trojan label during the 70s – and a surprising hit for the company too! The approach here is very unusual – as the cuts here all are earlier Trojan vocal singles that had larger backings provided by UK maestro Johnny Archey – then stripped of their vocals and presented as instrumentals! As you'd guess by the names, Archey adds strings to the Kingston rhythms – but the approach is surprisingly nice – almost like early reggae rhythms coming into play with the best of the UK sound library generation – with results that are as groovy as that description might imply. Titles include "World Without Love", "One Woman", "Let The Man Go", "Leaving Rome", "Pantomime", "God Bless The Children", and "Young Gifted & Black". Reggae Strings 2 is a set that follows nicely on the first Reggae Strings effort on Trojan – and, like the first, a package that features older vocal tracks with the lyrics stripped away, all to provide a focus on the fuller orchestrations of Johnny Archey! The approach is cooler than you'd guess – lots of nice charts that bring a bit of 70s smooth to the sound of Trojan – almost like Barry White was recording down in Kingston – on titles that include "How Many Times", "Jump Hallelujah", "Strange World", "It's Too Late", "Tell It Like It Is", "Scientist", "Jamaica Jerkoff", and "Sweet Bitter Love". 2CD set features 25 bonus tracks too – all the original vocal tunes used for the strings versions – with work by Bob Andy, The Dynamites, Greyhound, Bob & Marcia, Nicky Thomas, Danny Ray, Merlene Webber, The Uniques, Pioneers, Winston Groovy, and others! 51 tracks in all – and a nice set of notes. A return to greatness for the legendary Tribe Records scene in Detroit – an underground movement that gave us some spiritual jazz classics in the 70s – then kept on making wonderful music at an even more underground level as the years went on! This set is a collection of work from three rare recordings issued during that time – all on CD only, and representing a maybe even more obscure side of this legacy than the Tribe albums of the 70s! First up is trombonist Phil Ranelin – heading up a group that includes Wendell Harrison on tenor and Marcus Belgrave on trumpet – two key Tribe partners from the early years – really stretching out on the titles "He The One We All Knew" and "Freddie's Groove", both recorded in 1990. Next is material from a 1995 performance led by pianist Harold McKinney – a set that's got an incredible depth of imagination and soul, almost as much as Harold McKinney's work of years back! The group is a wonderfully hip one – with former Tribe artists Wendell Harrison on tenor and clarinet and Marcus Belgrave on trumpet – plus additional players who include Kiane Zawadi on trombone, Reggie Workman on bass, Francisco Mora on percussion, and Jimmy Owens on trumpet. There's a bit of vocals, but never that much – and most tracks are long and open – freely exploratory, but never too far out or avant-styled – just soulful and spiritual, in the true Tribe Records tradition! Titles include "Wide & Blue", "The Slave Ship Enterprise", "Juba", "Libra Ahora", and "Conjure Man". Last is a set of tracks recorded in 2014 by keyboardist Pamela Wise – a record that really carries forward the Tribe Records spirit from the 70s! The overall approach is a bit more contemporary, but the set's still got all the best feel of a classic indie album from the underground – played and penned by Wise in close collaboration with reedman Wendell Harrison, a frequent partner of Pamela's on a variety of projects, and one of the driving forces of Tribe back in the day! Wise plays both acoustic and electric keyboards, and sometimes sings just slightly – although most of the album is instrumental – and in addition to Harrison's work on tenor and bass clarinet, the album features trumpet, guitar, and lots of percussion. Titles include "Ode To Black Mothers", "Hometown", and "Marcus Garvey". LP, Vinyl record album

Greg Ward Presents Rogue ParadeStomping Off From Greenwood ... CD
Greenleaf, 2019. Used ... $7.99
A record with a really beautiful sound – thanks to the inventive inclusion of two different guitarists, each of whom work together to create a colorful palette next to the sharper alto sounds of leader Greg Ward! Both Matt Gold and Dave Miller handle the guitars, both with effects – and the result is quite unique, and also still retains a sort of focus that guitar/effects jazz can sometimes lose – possibly because of the very strong work on bass from Matt Ulery and drums from Quin Kirchner. Ward's as strong of a leader as he is a soloist – and titles include "Black Woods", "Pitch Black Promenade", "Let Him Live", "The Fourth Reverie", "The Contender", and "Metropolis". CD

Concord, 2015. Used ... $2.99
Bassist Ben Williams definitely comes of age here – serving up a set that's warmly balanced between acoustic and electric modes from the leader, and from the other musicians in the group! The album's got an open, soulful vibe that's not unlike some of the best contemporary projects on Blue Note in recent years – particularly those from the Robert Glasper camp – maybe a bit more straightforward than those, but with a wonderfully rich vibe – and just the right amount of space for guest stars who include Stefon Harris on vibes, Christian Scott on trumpet, and Goapele and W Ellington Felton on vocals. The core group has lots of great Fender Rhodes – plus soprano and tenor sax from Marcus Strickland – and titles include "Black Villain Music", "Voice Of Freedom", "Lost & Found", "The Color Of My Dreams", "Toy Soldiers", and "Half Steppin". ✨✧ Bobby BroomClean Sweep ... LP
Arista, 1981. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A killer set from a player who should have been huge – ultra-sweet guitarist Bobby Broom, a player we'd vote to become the next big heir to the sound of Wes Montgomery or George Benson! This debut set is a wicked mix of jazz and soul – recorded right at the best stretch of the early GRP label, with a similar blend and sense of depth as the label's initial albums by Don Blackman and Bernard Wright! The core groove focuses strongly on Broom's guitar, but there's also some great vocal numbers too – and it turns out that Bobby's a surprisingly good singer, too – with a nicely honest vocal approach that works great alongside his guitar. Arrangements are by Broom, Dave Grusin, and Marcus Miller – and titles include "No Bad Vibes", "Saturday Night", "Niqui", "Share My Love", "She's My Reason", and "Remember When". Polydor/Hip-O Select, Early 70s. Used 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The early 70s were an amazing time in soul music – and for the King Of Soul in particular – documented masterfully on Volume 8 in the James Brown Singles series from Hip-O Select! Like the other volumes, it includes both sides of all the JB singles, programmed chronologically from early 1972 through August 1973 – from furious and frenetic funk to socially conscious soul, blacksploitation soundtrack gems to tender ballads – and a few that combine those elements. Includes unstoppable classics and comparable rarities, with detailed notes on each single, the line-up of players and the dates of release. Straight up fantastic funky soul, and not just for completists – it's a stellar portrait of JB that shows just how far he reached stylistically without ever compromising his established identity as The King Of Soul! 40 tracks on 2CDs: "Nothing Beats A Try But A Fail", "Hot Pants Road", "King Heroin", "Pass The Peas", "There It Is" (Parts 1 & 2), "Honky Tonk" (Parts 1 & 2), "Get On The Good Foot" (Parts 1 & 2), "I Got Ants In My Pants" (mono and reverb versions), "What My Baby Needs Now Is A Little More Lovin" and "This Guy – This Girl's In Love With You" with Lyn Collins, "Mama's Dead", "Everybody's Got Soul", "Sexy Sexy Sexy", "Slaughter Theme" and much more! ✨✧ Fertile GroundField Songs – Revisited ... CD
Blackout, 1998/2005. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A beautifully remastered version of the fantastic first album by Fertile Ground – a stunning debut that's one of the best underground soul albums of the past decade! The record dips back into a spiritual jazzy tradition that encompasses work by artists like Doug Carn or Earth Wind & Fire, but it's also got a rawer edge that works perfectly with the righteousness of the group's message. Vocalist Navasha D Boxley has a style that ranks with the best of our favorite singers – like Dee Dee Bridgewater, Jean Carn, and Carmen Lundy – and she's backed by sublime keyboard work by James Collins, and intricately jazzy drumming by Marcus Asante. A great set all the way through – and filled with wonderful cuts like "Ghetto Butterflies", "Sweet Melodies", "En Hiver", "Lovin You", "Soulmates", and "Black Sunshine". This new version really increases the sound from the original – pushing up the best strengths of the record through newly-mixed takes, in a way that gives the vocals even more power! CD

Universal (France), Late 50s/1960s/1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 3CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A treasure trove of rare work from the legendary Serge Gainsbourg – studio outtakes, alternate versions, and lots of other material that stands as a great addition to the catalog of one of the coolest, grooviest French language singers ever! This 3CD set is overflowing with gems – and CD1 brings together rare tracks by Serge himself – some from 45 or LP projects, but presented here in different modes that stand as a wonderful complement to some of the versions you might know – almost like a "part 2" or extended take in some cases. Titles include "Black Trombone (avec intro)", "L'Homme A Tete De Chou (instrumental)", "Sea Sex & Sun (extrait des prises voix", "Chez Les Yeye (prise complete)", "L'Eau A La Bouche (avec intro)", "69 Annee Erotique (instrumental)", and two very long tracks – "Melody (prise complete)" and "Lola Roastaquoouere (instrumental)". CD2 features various interpretations of Serge's songs – many of which were produced by Serge himself, and a few of which even feature vocals by Gainsbourg! The music spans the space of his early Latin and jazzy work, through his slinky sexy 60s and 70s years, to his final burst of great music in the early 80s. Titles include "J'Ai Deja Donne" by Jacques Dutronc, "Les P'Tits Papiers" by Regine, "Les Papillons Noirs" by Michele Arnaud, "Mambo Miam Miam" by Los Goragueros, "Le Sixieme Sens" by Juliette Greco, "L'Oiseau De Paradis" by Zizi Jeanmarie, "Les Petits Boudins" by Dominique Walter, "Le Mal Interieur" by Isabelle Adjani, "Plus Dous Avec Moi" by Charlotte Gainsbourg, and "Le Drapeau Noir" by Mirelle Darc. CD3 features great music that Serge Gainsbourg did for a variety of cinematic projects – music that's every bit as groovy as his own vocal tunes, and which often appear here in instrumental takes that let you focus even more strongly on his great sense of a funky bit and a groove! Titles include "Milena (instrumental)", "L'Eau A La Bouche (avec intro)", "Requiem Pour Un Con (instrumental)", "First Class Ticket (prise alternative)", "Les Chemins De Katmandou (generique)", "Le Village A L'Aube", "Discophoteque (rough mix)", and "Le Physique Et La Figure (version complete)", plus Anna Karina singing "Roller Girl". ✨✧ Waylon JenningsRamblin Man ... LP
RCA, 1974. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Waylon Jennings at peak mid 70s perfection! Ramblin' Man fits in stylistically with the gruff honky tonk hero mode he first fully realized a couple albums earlier, but he's still fiercely blazing trails here, pairing his gruff lead vocals with sweeter female harmonies on some tracks, changing the groove from laidback swagger to fast-paced honky tonk, working in some tender ballads with the gruffer numbers...Waylon at his best. Starts up with the eternal title track and equally classic "Rainy Day Woman" and hardly lets up in greatness from there, with "Cloudy Days", "The Hunger", "It'll Be Her", a great cover of the Allman Brothers' "Midnight Rider", "Memories Of You And Me", "Amanda" and more. A&M/Verve, 1971. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great bit of 70s electric work from Quincy – and probably his funkiest album ever! Quincy's really stepping out here from the straighter and spacier styles of earlier records – going for more of the dirty grooves he was cutting up for soundtrack albums, and hitting notes that were a lot more fitting for the blacksploitation era. The record includes the massive funky track cut "Hikky-Burr", which was the theme to the first Bill Cosby Show, and which has a sinister groove, and some wild shouted lyrics! Also features two more great themes – "Ironside" and "The Anderson Tapes" – both of which have a cool electric sound to them, and the nice title cut, which actually features Quincy on vocals! Other tracks include "Cast Your Fate To The Wind", "What's Going On", "Brown Ballad" and more. CD

As with much of the work in his career, Bill Laswell assmebles an all star cast, this one based around the crew he'd pull from as he explored some of the heavier more tripped out directions that seemed to guide his work through the 90s. On the one hand he's tapping into the P-Funk axis with Bootsy, Gary Shider, Mudbone Cooper and Bernie Worrell, while still using some of the world music and reggae musicians he recruited nteh 80s, like Sly & Robbie and Aiyb Deng, plus the JB's horns withMaceo Parker, Fred Wesley and Pee Wee Ellis. Add a touch of avant jazz from Olu Dara and Henry Threadgill, plus a host of vocalists including the Jungle Brothers, Jalaluddin Nuriddin of the Last Poets and Shabba Ranks and you've got a pretty heavy cast of characters. A surprisingly nice album of straight ahead tenor tracks from David Murray – playing here in a quartet with guitarist Stanley Franks, drummer Andrew Cyrille, and the great Don Pullen, who plays organ on the session! The album's not exactly in the classic soul jazz organ/tenor mode – but it is one of the few that Murray ever recorded, and it's quite interesting to hear him in this sort of a format. Plus, it was also one of the few recorded during that magic year of 1991 – when DIW really seemed to be getting things right, turning out some of the few truly genius albums in the history of the label. Don't let the title fool you, as the set was recorded in the Barclay studios in Paris – but the record is definitely Chicago all the way through – as Hubert Sumlin plays guitar and sings – in a combo with Willie Mabon on piano and Lonnie Brooks on second guitar! By this point in his career, Sumlin's had years of experience in the Chicago clubs – and he definitely evokes that scene here with his confident, yet relaxed performance on all the tunes – never forcing things at all, and resisting any urge to pander for an overseas audience. Titles include "I Wonder Why", "Groove", "Easy Hubert Easy", "Broke & Hungry", "Give The Name Jacquot", and "My Guitar & Me". CD features three bonus tracks too! CD

✨✧ Robson Jorge & Lincoln OlivettiRobson Jorge & Lincoln Olivetti (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Polysom (Brazil), 1981. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Great 80s grooves from this cool Brazilian duo – the guitar and vocals of Robson Jorge and a sweet range of keyboards from Lincoln Olivetti – tied together in a style that's got plenty of great electro soul touches! At some level, the album recalls some of the 80s grooves coming from the US soul scene at the time – but the music also has elements that reflect some of the Brazilian funk of groups like Unaio Black or Banda Black Rio, and maybe even some of the styles of Marcos Valle in the early 80s too! There's a depth to the instrumentation that reflects a stronger understanding of jazz than most groups of this nature – and the vocals often take more of a place on the sidelines in favor of the instrumentation. The jazz sound is underscored by work from Marcio Montarroyos on trumpet and Leo Gandelman on baritone sax – and titles include "Eva", "Jorgea Corisco", "No Bom Sentido", "Raton", "Squash", "Ginga", and "Alegrias". Kendrick Lamar takes wider creative left turns than ever before on To Pimp A Butterfly – with a funk steeped production style that filters tried-and-true P Funk influences through leftfield modern beatcraft styles, inspired by cats like Madlib to Thundercat, the latter of whom is an official contributor. Fresh material from an increasingly pivotal figure – who may not be revolutionizing the game on the level of the heavy critical praise he's heaped with, but he's certainly marching to his own beat, rather than chasing hits! Includes "Wesley's Theory" with George Clinton & Thundercat, "King Kunta", "These Walls" with Bilal, Anna Wise & Thundercat, "Aright", "For Sale?", "Institutionalized" with a Slick Rick-homage of a guest verse by Snoop Dogg (sign us up for any record that gives props to The Ruler...and extra points for transplanting that style of flow to Compton), "Momma", "Hood Politics", "The Blacker The Berry", "How Much A Dollar Cost" feat James Fauntleroy & Ronald Isley, "Mortal Man" and more. Trojan/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1986. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A really striking mid 80s effort from the legendary Lee Scratch Perry – done at a time when his name and reputation had risen strongly on the global scene – which also seems to come through in the music as well! There's a wider range of styles going on here than before – and Scratch is more upfront, less hidden behind his own production – feeling that sense of mission as a messenger for madness that he seemed to take up at the time – a quality that comes through both in his lyrics and vocals, and in the nicely mish-mashed production as well! The set is credited to The Upsetters, but not the classic lineup – more a cast of characters behind much of the classic Black Ark material, though in good command of Scratch's brand of funky reggae. Titles include "Introducing Myself", "Time Marches On", "The Joker", "All Things Are Possible", "Grooving", "Drum Song", "I Am A Madman", "Show Me That River", and "Sexy Lady". Strange Disc, 1973. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The incredible soundtrack for the black cinema classic Ganja & Hess – a film that's often cited in the history of blacksploitation films, but which is much deeper overall! In some ways, both the movie and soundtrack are like Sweet Sweetback's Baadass Song – created in the same moment, and accessing audiences through the same channels – but completely different and distinct! The music here is sometimes soulful, but often quite experimental – and features lots of echo, studio effects, and tape tricks – often layering the sound in striking ways that could make some of the tracks resonate more strongly with musique concrete than with blacksploitation funk. Other moments are moody and atmospheric – while others are pure gospel. This album is the first-ever release of the soundtrack – and titles include "Blood Of The Thing", "Bongili Work Song 1", "Hess Is Stabbed", "Survival/Drive", "The Seduction", "March Blues", and "Theme From Blood Couple". One of Don Cherry's most spiritual, far-reaching projects – a wonderful record that builds both on his key avant work of the 60s, and some of the globally-inspired sounds he was cutting overseas! This date was done in close collaboration with the New York underground of the time – and the large group features work from a rich array of great musicians – including Charles Brackeen on soprano and alto sax, Carlos Ward on alto, Frank Lowe and Dewey Redman on tenors, Charlie Haden on bass, Carla Bley on piano, and Ed Blackwell on drums – working with additional string and percussion players in a sound that's completely sublime! There's a great ear here for unusual sonic twists and turns, yet these are mixed with some deeper organic tones, and some freer jazz passages – all to really ignite a great fire as the set rolls on.
