✨✧ Billy CobhamCrosswinds ... CD
Warner/Wounded Bird, 1974. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A masterful album from Billy Cobham – and maybe the best 70s record to really demonstrate the unique place he found for himself in 70s fusion! The album soars with a sound that really lives up to its cover image – but it's also not the heavy-jamming affair of some of Billy's more rockish records from the time. Instead, it's got this wonderful blend of deeper elements that really come together wonderfully – and some very strong use of reeds from Michael Brecker, trumpet from Randy Brecker, and trombone from the great Garnett Brown – all players who give the album a very rich, soulful voice. The set includes the famous sample track "Heather", a very dope, very mellow cut with great electric keyboard work by George Duke – and other titles include "Crosswind", "The Pleasant Pheasant", and "Spanish Moss – A Sound Portrait". ✨✧ Billy CobhamInner Conflicts ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1978. Used ... $18.99
Billy's got no "inner conflicts" here – as the album's a full-on set of heavy jamming, one that features some nice electronics alongside Billy's drums! The album's actually one of our favorite Cobham sessions of the 70s – a record that we'd rank right up there with Spectrum for sheer intensity, and for its ability to appeal to our funk-tuned ears. The variety of rhythms on the record is really really great – earthy and tribal one minute, and electric and spacey the next – all coming off well without trying too hard, and with a feel that's much more jazzy and soulful than some of Billy's more rock-focused work. Players include George Duke as Dawilli Gonga on keyboards, John Scofield on guitar, Julian Priester on trombone, Jimmy Owens on trumpet, and Pete & Sheila Escovedo on percussion. Titles include "Inner Conflicts", "Arroyo", "El Barrio", "Nickels & Dimes", and "The Muffin Talks Back". CD

Atlantic/Wounded Bird, 1976. New Copy ... $11.99 12.99
Full-on fusion from the great Billy Cobham – a set that has the drummer working at his most pyrotechnic, with amazing action on the kit that just about none of his contemporaries could ever hope to touch! Some moments have Cobham really taking off into the skies, right from the start of a track – but other moments are nicely spaced out, creating that sense of balance that's always made these late 70s Atlantic albums such standouts – not just in Billy's career, but in jazz fusion in general. John Scofield plays guitar throughout, and the record's got some great keyboards from Dawilli Gonga too – on titles that include "29", "Life & Times", "Siesta", "Earthlings", and "Song For A Friend". Atlantic/Warner (UK), 1974. Used ... $8.99
Full throttle fusion from Billy Cobham, the kind of stuff we once winced at because of the really over the top moments of heavy, heavy jamming, but that we find ourselves more sympathetic to these days, probably for the more sublime moments that poke through the onslaught here and there, including some nice spacey tracks. The Brecker brothers are up front, and the group has the tight electric approach you'd guess, with some easier grooves sliding in between the full on moments, and even a bit of funk, too. Includes "Solarization", "Lunarputians", "Total Eclipse", "Bandits", "Moon Germs","The Moon Ain't Made Of Green Cheese", "Sea Of tranquility" and "Last Frontier" CD

Atlantic/Rhino, 1973. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A monstrous bit of jazzy fusion from the 70s – and the record that really put drummer Billy Cobham on the map – virtually creating his own sort of space between jazz, funk, and prog – thanks to the help of an all star lineup too! Cobham is tremendous on drums – and is joined on most of the record by guitarist Tommy Bolin and keyboardist Jan Hammer – both at the height of their early powers – and a few other tracks feature a slightly different lineup, with great work from saxophonist Joe Farrell and trumpeter Jimmy Owens! The drummer is definitely in the space of the territory he would explore with George Duke – but is also maybe looser and more open to new sounds too – really stepping out on cuts that include the slow mellow funk number "Red Baron", which has great breaks and nice electric piano – plus "Stratus", "Taurian Matador", "To The Women In My Life", and "Quadrant 4". The album was recorded live in Switzerland and London – all very much in a post Bitches Brew approach to jazz that has all players going pedal to the metal in pursuit of their ends – thankfully working together well here, and really propelled into the cosmos by Billy's mighty work on the drums! Players include John Abercrombie, Michael Brecker, Randy Brecker, and Milcho Leviv – and the tracks are all long, with titles that include "Red Baron (Revisited)", "Tenth Pinn", "Shabazz", and "Tauranian Matador (revisited)". Billy Cobham live – very alive, in fact – and jamming like the "muther" promised in the title! The set's filled with heavy drums from Cobham, set in a group that also features fusion heavyweights Alphonso Johnson on bass, Steve Khan on guitar, Tom Scott on tenor and soprano sax, and Mark Soskin on keyboards – all working in ways that are more strongly in the funky jazz side of the fusion spectrum than some of Cobham's more rockish sets – with lots of lean, angular grooves that sound especially nice on the saxes and keyboards! Blow It Hard (UK), 2003. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great little session of straight jazz – featuring a trio led by drummer Billy Cobham, with piano by Kenny Barron and bass by Ron Carter! The album's quite different than Cobham's funky fusion classics – recorded with a warm, round, acoustic tone that's much more in keeping with Barron's excellent trio sides of the past 20 years. And although the set's issued by the mostly-funk label Blow It Hard, the album's got an impeccable sense of recording and presentation that's much more in the mode of Japanese boutique jazz labels, like DIW or 88's. Titles include "Stella By Starlight", "And Then Again", "New Waltz", "I Thought About You", and "Autumn Leaves". CD

Billy Cobham's always got something funky going on in his music – and this 70s classic for Atlantic Records has the drummer at the height of his powers – really mixing together jazz, rock, and funk impulses – all without some of the overindulgence of his more jamming records of the time! There's still some great trippy sounds at times – some fierce future jazz passages that have Billy's drums really propelling keyboards and guitar – but overall the tracks are short and focused, with a nice nod back to the kind of energy that Cobham brought to his sessions with other artists. One exception is the great "Moody Modes" – a sweet long electric track that almost feels like George Duke on MPS – alongside other cuts that include "A Funky Kind Of Thing", "Some Skunk Funk", and "Light At The End Of The Tunnel". A real jammer of a record from Billy Cobham – almost a summation of all the work he'd done in earlier years, smoothed out with a sweet funky late 70s fusion groove! The sound on the set is really tight – still plenty hard on the instrumentation, but also with a focus that we really appreciate – one that's aimed as much at the soul-based jazz crowd as it is the headphone groovers who'd dug some of Cobham's trippier records in years past. Players on the set include Mark Soskin and Joachim Kuhn – both of whom add in some mighty nice keyboards – as well as guitarist Pete Maunu, whose jamming riffs make the best tunes crackle with electricity! Titles include "AC/DC", "Leaward Winds", "Puffnstuff", "Antares The Star", "Magic", and "On A Magic Carpet Ride". CD also adds in 2 bonus tracks – "Indigo" and "Guernica". LP, Vinyl record album

One of the great Miles 70s groove albums – an album that's often as funky as you might expect from the cover, with a sound that's gone onto become the stuff of legend over the years! The noise of previous electric sessions is nicely toned down a bit here – leaving lots more room for soulful grooving – and although the selections were recorded over different dates, there's a very unified feel to the record – as most tracks have a similar groove, away from other Davis electric work of the period. Players vary throughout – and include Wayne Shorter and Sonny Fortune on reeds, Lonnie Smith and Chick Corea on keyboards, Ron Carter and Dave Holland on basses, John McLaughlin on guitar, and Al Foster and Billy Cobham on drums. Titles include "Great Expectations", "Ife", "Go Ahead John", and "Lonely Fire" – and the whole thing kicks! CD

At some level, the vibe is a bit like some of the more hard-hitting fusion of the Billy Cobham generation in the US – but there's also some different touches in the mix, as additional percussionists are added to the lineup – which also features Fender Rhodes and moog from the mighty Sante Palumbo, plus saxes from Peter Guidi and Giorgio Baiocco, and guitar from Sergio Farina! One of the deepest soul sets from Esther Phillips' 70s years on Kudu Records – a set with some nicely gritty grooves and a surprisingly earthy feel at times – especially when compared to some of her other albums of the time! Backings are by James Brown's old reedman, Pee Wee Ellis – and although there's some of the usual Kudu electric funk in the mix, there's also some deeper soul elements too – a vibe that's often a bit laidback and open, almost more Atlantic Records at points – which is a mighty good fit for Esther's wonderful voice! As usual for Kudu, the players are an all-star lineup – one that includes Richard Tee on keyboards, George Benson on guitar, Maceo Parker on tenor, and Bernard Purdie and Billy Cobham on drums – and Don Sebesky's also on deck a bit, to sweeten a few tracks up with light strings. The album's got a great version of Bill Withers' "Use Me" that features a tasty break in the intro – and other titles include a great version of "Alone Again (Naturally)", plus the cuts "Let's Move & Groove", "Cherry Red", "Let Me In Your Life", and "You & Me Together". Horace SilverYou Gotta Take A Little Love ... LP
Blue Note, 1969. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $14.99
A great late 60s gem from pianist Horace Silver – and a great bridge between his earlier soul jazz for Blue Note, and some of his more righteous work to come in the 70s! At one level, the sound here steps off from classics like Serenade To A Soul Sister or The Jody Grind – but at another level, there's a more open approach to the music – one that has Horace sliding into new tones and colors, with a slightly lyrical undercurrent as well. As on some of his later dates, the mellower moments are often the most compelling – showing a newly mature side of Silver's talents, and a new love of space between the notes that really helps to break the mode of previous recordings! The group here features the great Bennie Maupin on tenor and flute, Randy Brecker on trumpet and flugelhorn, John Williams on bass, and Billy Cobham on drums – and titles include "Lovely's Daughter", "Risin Sun", "You Gotta Take A Little Love", "Down & Out", and "Brain Wave". LP, Vinyl record album
(Liberty stereo pressing with Van Gelder stamp. Vinyl has a light, short click during "Brain Wave", but the rest is great. Cover has unglued seams & light wear.)

CTI, 1972. Very Good Gatefold ... $24.99
One of the best CTI albums from the early 70s – and one of Stanley Turrentine's funkiest records as well! The album's got a sharper edge than most other Turrentine albums of the time – a quality that goes beyond Stan's already soulful approach to the tenor, and which brings in some tight changes and more pronounced rhythms that really give the best cuts a great groove! The group's a sextet – with Bob James on electric piano, Milt Jackson on vibes, Cornell Dupree on guitar, Ron Carter on bass, and Billy Cobham on drums – and titles include a monster version of Weldon Irvine's "Sister Sanctified" – a great funk tune that's probably best known as the sample for "My Philosophy" by BDP! Other tracks include "Speedball", "Cherry", and "The Revs". LP, Vinyl record album

A&M, 1976. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An all-star soul affair produced by Quincy Jones, and featuring the talents of studio greats like Harvey Mason, Billy Cobham, Toots Thielmans, Dave Grusin, Lee Ritenour, and many others – not to mention the Brothers themselves! We'll be honest, though, in saying that we really think it's the great jazzy backing and the tight arrangements by Quincy that make this record so great. The Brothers' bass and vocal work is fine – but it's the non-bass instrumental moments that really make this album great, as you'll hear on cuts like the moog-heavy "Tomorrow", or the timbales/keyboard/flute groover "Thunder Thumbs & Lightnin Licks". Great stuff if you dig mid 70s work by Q – and featuring the tracks "I'll Be Good To You", "Land Of Ladies", "Free & Single", "Get The Funk Out Ma Face", and "The Devil". LP, Vinyl record album

A nice little funky fusion set by Dreams – who were basically the Brecker Brothers, before they stepped out on their own and started calling themselves by that name! The fusion super group actually hews a little closer to the rock side of the fusion game at times, but there's no shortage of jazzy chord structures and some nice riffing and soloing going one – not unlike Chase or some of the other groups that were grooving in a similar jazz rock vein at the time! Billy Cobham joins the Breckers on the set – and titles include "Devil Lady", "15 Miles To Provo", 'The Maryanne", "Holli Be Home", "try Me", "Dream Suite" and "New York". CD

✨✧ Pete & Sheila EscovedoSolo Two/Happy Together ... CD
Fantasy, 1977/1978. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
2 great groovers from the team of Pete & Sheila Escovedo! Solo Two is funky Latin grooves from Sheila Escovedo – recorded in the decade before she hooked up with Prince and dropped the "scovedo" from her last name – when she was part of a hip Bay Area scene that also included her brother Pete! The album's got a great blend of funky fusion and Latin styles – served up with a sound that's right up there with the best on Fantasy Records from the time – a really unique fusion of modes that shows just how much trading of styles was going on in that scene during the 70s. Billy Cobham produced, with a definite ear for the percussion in the group – and the rest of the group features Mark Soskin on keyboards, Ray Obiedo on guitar, and some added horns to flesh out the sound nicely. Pete plays timbales, Sheila's on congas, and titles include "Bittersweet", "Solo Tu", and "Fantasy Junction" – plus a nice version of Milton Nascimento's "Vera Cruz". Happy Together features tight and soulful grooves from the team of Pete and Sheila Escovedo – a set that still has elements of the pair's Latin roots, but which also explodes in a flurry of funk, soul, and fusion moments too! As with their first Fantasy album, the duo have Billy Cobham on deck to produce – giving the record a sweetly soulful sound that's a bit like his own work of the late 70s, only a bit more Latinized in the percussion. Cobham also plays drums – and other players include Eddie Henderson on trumpet, Mark Soskin on keyboards, and Ray Obiedo on guitar. Titles include "Bolinas", "Ain't That The Truth", "Hello Like Before", "Burrito Bandito", "Cueros", and "Bridges (Travessia)". Note: In order to fit both albums on one CD, the set omits the track "Clean Air" from Solo Two. CD

A great little fusion set from Airto – recorded in a mode that's a great bridge between his acoustic roots and some of his smoother albums in years to come! The sound has some key electric elements here – bits of bass, guitar, and keyboards – but there's still a strongly acoustic sound overall too, one that leaves plenty of room for Airto's unique jams on percussion, plus a bit of vocals from the lovely Flora Purim. Airto's got some top-shelf talents helping him out here – Billy Cobham on production, and Stanley Clarke and Milcho Leviev on arrangements – and there's a nice sense of darkness going on that even separates the album from some of Airto's other mid 70s sides on CTI. Ray Barretto's definitely going down different road here – and sounding amazingly great in the process! The record is unlike anything else that Ray did at the time – a stunning batch of fusion tracks, with more of an electric jazz approach than usual – one that's a soaringly sublime blend of Latin, fusion, and soul – all delivered with a near-perfect sound throughout! There's a depth of soul and sophistication here that's hard to match – save, perhaps, by Bobby Vince Paunetto's mid 70s gems – and the group features killer Fender Rhodes from Eddy Martinez, plus a three trumpet frontline dancing together with a sound that's a lot more soul jazz than Latin leads. Billy Cobham plays drums, Art Webb is on flute, and titles include "Lucretia The Cat", "Oracion", "The Other Road", "Little Ting", and "Abidjan Revisited". LP, Vinyl record album

The sound is sometimes spacey, sometimes groovy – and marks a key chapter in Carter's career, one that has him stepping out of the background into a great role as a leader – setting the stage for many more albums to come in the 70s! ✨✧ Charles EarlandIntensity (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Prestige/OJC, 1972. Used ... Out Of Stock
A wonderfully-named session – as Charles Earland plays here with an intensity that's undeniable! The album marks a key shift for Earland – one away from the more standard soul jazz mode, into a realm of looser, freer rhythms that really take off from the start – knowing no end on the longer tunes, and really letting Charles run to the skies on the keys of the Hammond! The group on the set is a larger than usual one – with a trumpet section that includes Lee Morgan and Virgil Jones; reed players that include Billy Harper and Hubert Laws; and a double-edged rhythm line forged through the drums of Billy Cobham and the conga of Sonny Morgan – often working alongside each other to really widen the groove! The sound is remarkable – tight, but never slick – and in a sophisticated groove that could hardly be hinted at from Earland's earlier work. All tracks are long, and titles include "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow", "Morgan", "Cause I Love Her", and "Happy Cause I'm Going Home". CD also brings in 2 more bonus tracks – both in a similar mode, from the album Charles III – "Lowdown" and "Speedball". CD

A wicked batch of funky tracks from the Fania All Stars – one of their greatest albums, and one with a good story to boot! Supposedly, the group were all set to do an all-star concert with some very famous guests, but the whole thing turned out to be a disaster with lots of problems in the recording of the set. So, the ensemble retreated to the studio, where they cut a non-live version of the music that was supposed to be on the live album – hence the sub-title of the record, which is "How It Was, How It Ended, How It Was Going To Be!" The record is a real burner – one of the best 70s Fania funk sides – with loads of long tracks, killer jazz funk soloing, and guest work by players that include Manu Dibango, Jorge Santana, Billy Cobham, and Jan Hammer. The bulk of the set features some compelling quartet work – with Stan's tenor in the company of McCoy Tyner on piano, Gene Taylor on bass, and Billy Cobham on drums – almost in Easy Walker sort of territory, with a great stepping soulful groove – but a bit more fluid, given the Tyner touch! That quartet plays "Stan's Shuffle", "Watch What Happens", "Intermission Walk", and "Wave". A trio of excellent albums from master drummer Tony Williams – all brought together in a single package! Believe It is crackling funky fusion from Tony Williams' "new" version of his classic Lifetime group – a quartet that featured some smoking guitar work by jazz rock legend Allan Holdsworth! The sound on the set is very full-on and jamming – fuzzed-out guitars taking over most of the tracks, and Tony jumping into the fray with some really frenetic work on drums – miles away from his earlier jazz work in the 60s, and really taking off with the best sort of rock/jazz fusion energy! Titles include "Snake Oil", "Fred", "Proto Cosmos", "Red Alert", and "Mr Spock". On Million Dollar Legs, Tony Williams is a million miles from his work with the Miles Davis Quintet on this record – grooving in a heavy rock/fusion mode with his New Lifetime group that includes Allan Holdsworth on guitar, Tony Newton on bass and vocals, and Alan Pasqua on keyboards! The tracks have a post Jeff Beck kind of approach – lots of heavy riffing in a way that does create a bit of funk at the right moments, almost in the Alphonze Mouzon/Tommy Bolin mode – and Williams' drums are right at home in the setting, and somehow filled with as much imagination and creativity as before! Titles include "Sweet Revenge", "Inspirations Of Love", "Lady Jade", "What You Do To Me", and "Joy Filled Summer". Joy Of Flying is a key record in the evolution of Tony Williams as a drummer – and kind of a powerful summation of all the changes he'd made in the 70s – before a return to straighter jazz in the next decade! Williams' drumming here is incredibly fierce at points – almost at a Billy Cobham level – but he also shows the sensitivity to deeper sounds that he first brought into play during the 60s – and manages to mix an ear for fusion modes with some freer elements too – thanks to help from a lineup of players that includes Herbie Hancock and Brian Auger on keyboards, Cecil Taylor on piano, Jan Hammer on Fender Rhodes, Stanley Clarke on bass, Ton Scott on lyricon, and Ronnie Montrose on guitar. Titles include "Tony", "Coming Back Home", "Morgan's Motion", "Eris", "Open Fire", and "Hittin On 6". 2 lesser-known Gene Ammons albums for Prestige – back to back on one CD! First up is Got My Own, a more laidback set than usual from Ammons' early 70s stretch on Prestige – but a record that nicely gets back to that big-toned tenor sound he used often on ballads from earlier years! The combo mixes both electric piano and organ – the former from Hank Jones, the latter from Ernie Hayes – and drums are mostly by Idris Muhammad, but in a style that's a bit more roundly open and soul-based than some of his funkier jams. Roy's a genius from start to finish – way more than just the already great vibes player of his records of the late 60s – and instead, this spiritual maestro who's able to blend together a really rich array of elements – almost a David Axelrod in the studio, as he elevates both his own game and that of black music with a completely righteous vibe throughout! Super-righteous work from William S Fischer – the ultra-hip arranger who was one of the most important forces in the late 60s underground soul jazz scene! Fischer is best known for his work with Eugene McDaniels, Eddie Harris, and Les McCann – almost akin to the sorts of collaborative influence that David Axelrod had with Cannonball Adderley or Lou Rawls, but with a style that was decidedly darker, and trippier. This album's one of the few ever recorded under his own name – originally done for the tripped-out jazz imprint Embryo, and featuring a unique blend of moog, strings, funk, and soul! Billy Cobham plays drums and percussion on the set, Bill Robinson sings on a few numbers, and Walter Sear adds in some extra moog next to Fischer's own work – but the real brilliance comes from the overall concept – funky one minute, laidback and trippy the next, very much in the spirit of some of the righteous crossover funk, soul, and rock recordings coming from McDaniels and Axelrod at the time! Owens is in good company here – working with a group that includes Kenny Barron on electric piano, Billy Cobham on drums, and Billy Harper on tenor and flute. The album's funky in parts, but the best tracks are the sparer, slower ones. Includes the track "Chicago Light Green", "Lo Slo Bluze", "Put It All Togetha", and "Funk A De Mama". Great stuff! ✨✧ Lonnie SmithMama Wailer ... LP
Kudu, 1971. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
One of Lonnie Smith's rarest albums – and one of the most obscure records on the landmark Kudu label! The set is one of Smith's most far-reaching from the 70s – a bit in the mode of his earlier records for Blue Note, but with a slightly sweeter quality that shows the shift to Kudu – where Lonnie's Hammond had lost none of its grooving power! Tracks are all quite long – and build from the jamming approach that Lonnie first developed at Blue Note – a club-trained groove that has the mighty organ leading off each track, but still leaving plenty of other space for other players too – including Dave Hubbard on tenor, Danny More on trumpet, Ron Carter on bass, Jimmy Ponder on guitar, and Billy Cobham on drums – as well as Grover Washington on flute, who also helped a bit with arrangements on the record. The centerpiece of the album is a 17 minute long version of Sly Stone's "Stand" – and other tracks include "I Feel The Earth Move", "Hola Muneca", and "Mama Wailer". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Stanley TurrentineCherry ... CD
CBS, 1972. Used ... Out Of Stock
CD

✨✧ Grover Washington JrAll The King's Horses ... LP
Kudu, 1972. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One of Grover Washington's first albums as a leader – cut hot on the heels of some great work as a sideman, including some key funky dates with Charles Earland on Prestige! The sound here is a bit looser than some of Groover's smoother sides to come – a nice blend of his earthy jazz funk roots with the warmer sounds of the CTI/Kudu world – arranged and produced beautifully by keyboardist Bob James, who also plays both electric piano and harpsichord on the album! The cuts are a bit shorter than later on, but still totally tremendous – a sly, subtle approach to jazz funk that really took the keyboard/tenor mode into bold new territory for the 70s – a real genre-starting record that still sounds sublime all these many years later. Grover plays tenor and alto – no soprano sax yet – and other players include Richard Tee on organ, Billy Cobham or Bernard Purdie on drums, and Eric Gale or Cornell Dupree on guitar. Titles include "All The King's Horses", "Body & Soul", "Lean On Me", "Lover Man", "Love Song 1700", and "No Tears In The End". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Tony WilliamsJoy Of Flying ... CD
Columbia/Reel Music, 1979. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A key record in the evolution of Tony Williams as a drummer – and kind of a powerful summation of all the changes he'd made in the 70s – before a return to straighter jazz in the next decade! Great CD reissue – full notes, and a 20 page booklet with the usual Reel Music attention to detail! CD

✨✧ Horace SilverSerenade To A Soul Sister ... CD
Blue Note, 1968. Used ... Out Of Stock
The quintessential sound of late 60s Horace Silver – on one hand still very much in the Blue Note soul jazz groove that earned him plenty of jukebox single play, but on the other hand really stretching out with a style that's a bit more righteous than before! Horace shows that he can still pen a hit when he wants – and gave the world the tune "Psychedelic Sally" with this set – but he also displays a penchant for more complicated rhythms and freer horn expressions on beautiful tunes like "Kindred Spirits", "Rain Dance", and "Jungle Juice". The group's filled with great players – from tenor work by Stanley Turrentine and Bennie Maupin, trumpet by Charles Tolliver, and drums by a young Billy Cobham! CD
