✨✧ Billy CobhamBest Of Billy Cobham (Columbia) ... LP
Columbia, Late 70s. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
A collection of work from Billy Cobham, smoothed out with a sweet funky late 70s fusion groove! The sound on the set is really tight – still plenty hard on the instrumentation, but also with a focus that we really appreciate – one that's aimed as much at the soul-based jazz crowd as it is the headphone groovers who'd dug some of Cobham's trippier records in years past. Tracks here are pulled from his Columbia albums, and tracks include "On A Magic Carpet Ride", "Bolinas", "Pocket Change", "Puffnstuff", "What Is Your Fantasty", "'Anteres' The Star", "Indigo", and "Mendocino". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Billy Cobham George Duke BandLive On Tour In Europe ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1976. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A live bit of fusion supergroup jamming – one in which Billy Cobham and George Duke are joined by Alphonso Johnson and John Scofield in a set of really soulful numbers! The main focus here is straight fusion jamming, but there's also a nice undercurrent of funk and soul in the set as well – and Jon Lucien makes an appearance on the track "Almustafa The Beloved" – a great number with a break sampled by Peanut Butter Wolf! George Duke indulges himself a touch on "Space Lady", a spare electric keys number with a lengthy spoken intro – and other titles include "Do What Cha Wanna", "Frankenstein Goes To The Disco", "Hip Pockets", "Ivory Tattoo", "Sweet Wine", and "Juicy". ✨✧ AirtoVirgin Land ... LP
Salvation, 1974. Near Mint- ... $11.99
A great little fusion set from Airto – recorded in a mode that's a great bridge between his acoustic roots and some of his smoother albums in years to come! The sound has some key electric elements here – bits of bass, guitar, and keyboards – but there's still a strongly acoustic sound overall too, one that leaves plenty of room for Airto's unique jams on percussion, plus a bit of vocals from the lovely Flora Purim. Airto's got some top-shelf talents helping him out here – Billy Cobham on production, and Stanley Clarke and Milcho Leviev on arrangements – and there's a nice sense of darkness going on that even separates the album from some of Airto's other mid 70s sides on CTI. Titles include "Peasant Dance", "Musikana", "Virgin Land", and "Hot Sand". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has some ring & edge wear.)

✨✧ AtmospheresAtmospheres Featuring Clive Stevens & Friends ... CD
Capitol/ESC (Germany), 1974. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A jazz fusion classic from Atmospheres – a hip group led by reedman Clive Stevens, and which also features some usually-mellower players really taking off together! Stevens blows a great range of horns – electric and acoustic tenor, sopranos sax, and often a wah-wah pedal to inflect the notes coming out of his electric horn – a bit like John Klemmer in some of his early electric moments! This quality is emphasized nicely by the guitars of Steve Khan and John Abercrombie, and the electric piano and ring modulator of Ralph Towner – players who really know how to keep the right sort of space between the notes, which makes for a few funky moments – especially with core rhythms from Rick Laird on bass, Billy Cobham on drums, and Harry Wilkinson on percussion. Titles include "Nova 72", "Earth Spirit", "Astral Dreams", and "The Parameters Of Saturn". CD

✨✧ Ray BarrettoOther Road ... LP
Fania, 1973. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
Ray Barretto's definitely going down different road here – and sounding amazingly great in the process! The record is unlike anything else that Ray did at the time – a stunning batch of fusion tracks, with more of an electric jazz approach than usual – one that's a soaringly sublime blend of Latin, fusion, and soul – all delivered with a near-perfect sound throughout! There's a depth of soul and sophistication here that's hard to match – save, perhaps, by Bobby Vince Paunetto's mid 70s gems – and the group features killer Fender Rhodes from Eddy Martinez, plus a three trumpet frontline dancing together with a sound that's a lot more soul jazz than Latin leads. Billy Cobham plays drums, Art Webb is on flute, and titles include "Lucretia The Cat", "Oracion", "The Other Road", "Little Ting", and "Abidjan Revisited". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original multi color label pressing. Cover has some faded marker on back.)

✨✧ Ron CarterBlues Farm ... LP
CTI, 1973. Near Mint- ... $7.99
Sweet electric work from Ron Carter – subtle magic in the best CTI mode! Ron arranged the set himself, but he's working with a core group of CTI players that includes Bob James and Richard Tee on electric piano, Hubert Laws on flute, Ralph MacDonald on percussion, and Billy Cobham on drums – shifting mood, tone, and color with ease as each new track on the album emerges – and uniting the whole proceedings with work on acoustic bass and piccolo bass! Not funky, but very soulful – with a keen sense of space, but never too much so to make things snoozy. Titles include "Blues Farm", "Hymn For Him", "Two Beat Johnson", and "R2, M1". LP, Vinyl record album
(Non-gatefold pressing.)

✨✧ Miles DavisBig Fun ... LP
Columbia, 1974. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
One of the great Miles 70s groove albums – an album that's often as funky as you might expect from the cover, with a sound that's gone onto become the stuff of legend over the years! The noise of previous electric sessions is nicely toned down a bit here – leaving lots more room for soulful grooving – and although the selections were recorded over different dates, there's a very unified feel to the record – as most tracks have a similar groove, away from other Davis electric work of the period. Players vary throughout – and include Wayne Shorter and Sonny Fortune on reeds, Lonnie Smith and Chick Corea on keyboards, Ron Carter and Dave Holland on basses, John McLaughlin on guitar, and Al Foster and Billy Cobham on drums. Titles include "Great Expectations", "Ife", "Go Ahead John", and "Lonely Fire" – and the whole thing kicks! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Richard DavisFancy Free ... LP
Galaxy, 1977. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
A wonderful late 70s side featuring a cast of soul jazz heavies playing in a more straight context, with arrangements by Bill Lee. Richard Davis leads the group, with Eddie Henderson and Joe Henderson blowing up front, and Stanley Cowell and Billy Cobham joining him in the rhythm section, plus Dolly Hirota contributing vocals on "I StillLove You, Baby". The remainder of the set is made up of classic jazz numbers that may fall a bit short of "standard" status, but are great tunes nonetheless, like Miles' "Nardis", Donald Byrd's "Fancy Free" and Horace Silver's "Silver's Serenade". Tracks include some Evans originals – "Anita's Dance", "Jelly Rolls", "Alyrio", and "Variations On The Misery" plus others like Gershwin's "Gone, Gone, Gone" and Jimi Hendrix's "Up From The Skies". ✨✧ Mahavishnu OrchestraBirds Of Fire ... LP
Columbia, 1972. Very Good+ ... $6.99
A great second album from Mahavishnu Orchestra – one that has them still very might in the same tight formation as the first! As before, there's a heck of a lot of power here – monstrous work on drums from Billy Cobham, sharp-edged guitar from John McLaughlin, and a range of great keyboards from Jan Hammer – all played without the cliche of his later years! The group's completed by the surprisingly great electric violin of Jerry Goodman and the bass of Rick Laird – and the tunes nicely blend a few more contemplative moments with full-on, rock-inspired fusion jamming. Titles include "Miles Beyond", "One Word", "Sanctuary", "Open Country Joy", "Resolution", "Sapphire Bullets Of Pure Love", and "Thousand Island Park". LP, Vinyl record album
(In the textured cover, with some light wear and a wavy corner.)

Columbia, 1971. Used ... $2.99
A massive set of fusion from Mahavishnu Orchestra – a group that features some incredible guitar work from John McLaughlin, who sounds even more focused and driven here than on his own records! As with Return To Forever or Weather Report, the combo's a supergroup of sorts – with Billy Cobham on drums, Jan Hammer on keyboards, Jerry Goodman on violin, and Rick Laird on bass – all wailing with great intensity on some of the best numbers – a lot more energy than you might expect from their slightly more meditative name! Titles include "Meeting Of The Spirits", "Dawn", "The Noonward Race", "A Lotus On Irish Streams", and "Vital Transformation". CD

✨✧ Gabor SzaboMizrab ... CD
CTI/King (Japan), 1972. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Wonderful work from guitarist Gabor Szabo – a record that really helped to shift his sound and style into the 70s! The groove here is often open and free – taking off from some of the exoticism of Gabor's 60s albums on Impulse and Skye, but with a bit more of the CTI electric groove – thanks to arrangements from Bob James, who also plays keyboards on the set! The mix of Gabor's exotic tones and the deeper groove of CTI is a surprisingly great blend – and really helps to open up the guitarist's sound for a whole new generation. Drums are by Billy Cobham and Jack DeJohnette, who's especially funky on the great track "Thirteen" – and titles also include a great cover of "Summer Breeze", and the cuts "Mizrab", and "Concerto". Grover Washington JrAll The King's Horses ... LP
Kudu, 1972. Very Good+ ... $3.99
One of Grover Washington's first albums as a leader – cut hot on the heels of some great work as a sideman, including some key funky dates with Charles Earland on Prestige! The sound here is a bit looser than some of Groover's smoother sides to come – a nice blend of his earthy jazz funk roots with the warmer sounds of the CTI/Kudu world – arranged and produced beautifully by keyboardist Bob James, who also plays both electric piano and harpsichord on the album! The cuts are a bit shorter than later on, but still totally tremendous – a sly, subtle approach to jazz funk that really took the keyboard/tenor mode into bold new territory for the 70s – a real genre-starting record that still sounds sublime all these many years later. Grover plays tenor and alto – no soprano sax yet – and other players include Richard Tee on organ, Billy Cobham or Bernard Purdie on drums, and Eric Gale or Cornell Dupree on guitar. Titles include "All The King's Horses", "Body & Soul", "Lean On Me", "Lover Man", "Love Song 1700", and "No Tears In The End". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has light wear on the top seam, but is nice overall.)

Lenny WhiteVenusian Summer (remastered edition) ... CD
Nemperor/Wounded Bird, 1975. New Copy ... $10.99 11.98
Drummer Lenny White was one of the strongest talents on the kit to emerge during the 70s fusion years – a player who was every bit as tight and powerful as Billy Cobham, and maybe even more far-reaching in his style – as you might guess from the cosmic image on the cover! The album's got more than enough propulsion to soar to the skies – with White on massive drums – working with a killer batch of musicians that includes Patrick Gleason on keyboards and electronics, Onaje Allan Gumbs on acoustic and electric piano, Jimmy Smith and Larry Young on organ, Larry Coryell and Doug Rodriguez on guitars, and Tom Harrell on flugelhorn – all working together in a razor-sharp mix of acoustic and electric elements! Titles include "Mating Drive", "Venusian Summer", "Chicken Fried Steak", and "Prince Of The Sea". CD

✨✧ Ron CarterSpanish Blue ... LP
CTI, 1975. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the massive Ron Carter albums from the mid 70s – and a set of 4 open-ended modal tracks that hit a similar Latin/but not Latin approach as the tracks on Coltrane's great Ole album. The group's a small one – featuring Carter on bass, Billy Cobham on drums, Jay Berliner on guitar, Ralph MacDonald on percussion, Roland Hanna on piano, and Hubert Laws on flute. Laws' playing is some of the best on the record – and his solos carry most of the songs nicely, a lot more nicely, in fact, than those on his own albums at the time. Leon Pendarvis makes a guest appearance playing electric piano on the cut "Arkansas", which is a bit funky – and other tunes include "El Noche Sol", "Sabado Sombrero", and "El Noche Sol". ✨✧ Esther PhillipsAlone Again, Naturally ... CD
Kudu/Reel Music, 1972. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the deepest soul sets from Esther Phillips' 70s years on Kudu Records – a set with some nicely gritty grooves and a surprisingly earthy feel at times – especially when compared to some of her other albums of the time! Backings are by James Brown's old reedman, Pee Wee Ellis – and although there's some of the usual Kudu electric funk in the mix, there's also some deeper soul elements too – a vibe that's often a bit laidback and open, almost more Atlantic Records at points – which is a mighty good fit for Esther's wonderful voice! As usual for Kudu, the players are an all-star lineup – one that includes Richard Tee on keyboards, George Benson on guitar, Maceo Parker on tenor, and Bernard Purdie and Billy Cobham on drums – and Don Sebesky's also on deck a bit, to sweeten a few tracks up with light strings. The album's got a great version of Bill Withers' "Use Me" that features a tasty break in the intro – and other titles include a great version of "Alone Again (Naturally)", plus the cuts "Let's Move & Groove", "Cherry Red", "Let Me In Your Life", and "You & Me Together". ✨✧ Leon ThomasLeon Thomas Album ... LP
Flying Dutchman, 1970. Good Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Leon Thomas' first album for Flying Dutchman – and one of his best ever! The vibe is very similar to his work with Pharoah Sanders – with long modal tracks that bring out the best side of Thomas' spiritual vocalizations – especially on the 17 minute track "Pharoah's Tune (The Journey)", which is worth the price of the album alone. The personal is mindblowing, too – with Billy Harper, Billy Cobham, Roy Haynes and Jerome Richardson among the players – but make no mistake, it's Leon's voice and incredible energy that makes this such a classic! Beautiful spiritual jazz vocal material, with a sound that's beyond compare! Other tracks include "Come Along", "I Am", "Bag's Groove" and "Um, Um, Um". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Freddie HubbardSky Dive ... LP
CTI, 1972. Very Good Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A killer set from Freddie Hubbard's legendary years on CTI! Like the classic Red Clay album, there's 4 tunes here, all longer cuts – where everyone gets a chance to stretch out a bit, over smooth (but not too smooth!) electric grooves, supported by great orchestrations from Don Sebesky! Ron Carter & Billy Cobham provide a tight but elastic rhythmic underpinning – a great foil for solos by players who include Keith Jarrett on electric piano, George Benson on guitar, Hubert Laws on flute, and Freddie himself on trumpet. Airto & Ray Barretto are on percussion, with some nice percolating accents to the grooves – and titles include the classic "Povo", an oft-sampled monster – plus "In A Mist", "The Godfather", and "Sky Dive". After a disastrous attempt at recording a live show, the Fania All-Stars went in the studio with guests like Billy Cobham and Manu Dibango and created their funkiest and one of their finest albums of the seventies! A few cuts are more straight Latin sounding, some of these tracks have a nice hard funky jazz feel, and sound like they could have been recorded for Prestige. There's great versions of "Soul Makossa" and "Viva Tirado", plus a very nice track called "Smoke". Other titles include ""El Raton", "Congo Bongo", "Chanchullo", "There You Go" and "Mama Guela". ✨✧ Stanley TurrentineCherry/Don't Mess With Mister T/Sugar Man (with bonus tracks) ... CD
CTI/BGO (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A trio of classic CTI Records albums from tenorist Stanley Turrentine – with bonus tracks too! First up is Cherry – one of the best CTI albums from the early 70s – and one of Stanley Turrentine's funkiest records as well! The album's got a sharper edge than most other Turrentine albums of the time – a quality that goes beyond Stan's already soulful approach to the tenor, and which brings in some tight changes and more pronounced rhythms that really give the best cuts a great groove! The group's a sextet – with Bob James on electric piano, Milt Jackson on vibes, Cornell Dupree on guitar, Ron Carter on bass, and Billy Cobham on drums – and titles include a monster version of Weldon Irvine's "Sister Sanctified" – a great funk tune that's probably best known as the sample for "My Philosophy" by BDP! Other tracks include "Speedball", "Cherry", and "The Revs". On Don't Mess With Mister T, Stanley Turrentine meets Bob James – on a record that's one of the 70s classics on CTI! Bob James handles the arrangements – with that laidback, mellowfunky approach to jazz that he helped pioneer at the time – lots of modal chords in the rhythms, and these wonderfully soulful solos by the great Stan himself! James plays keyboards on the set – and Harold Mabern adds some piano too – and the lineup also includes the mighty Eric Gale on guitar, and Idris Muhammad on drums. Titles include the great title cut – a remake of Marvin Gaye's "Don't Mess With Mister T", plus "Too Blue", "Two For T", and "I Could Never Repay Your Love". Sugar Man is a classic set from Stanley "Sugar Man" Turrentine – a nickname the reedman had at the time, given the success of his famous CTI Records version of "Sugar"! This set follows in that same great mode – jazzy, but a bit funky too – although couched with this gentle sense of soul that's perfect for that spacious style of soloing that Turrentine perfected over the years – a way of blowing openly, and without too much fuss – but managing to hit all the right notes along the way! There's a great glow to the whole record – an excellent easygoing sense of soul – and titles include an incredible reading of "Vera Cruz", done with Deodato on piano, and at a breakaway speed that's just great, and worth the price of the record alone! Other tracks feature piano by Harold Mabern or organ by Butch Cornell – and titles include "The Stretch", "Just As I Am", and "Pieces Of Dreams". Bonus tracks include "The More I See You", "Don't Mess With Mister T (alt)", "Mississippi City", and "Harlem Dawn". CD
