A very interesting batch of tracks – one tune apiece by each of the artists named in the title, recorded between the years 1970 and 1973 at the Festival Ljublijana, in Yugoslavia. Bill Evans performs a long, and straight reading of Miles Davis' "Nardis" with a trio that includes Eddie Gomez on bass and Tony Oxley on drums; Karin Krog sings a spare version of "Round Midnight", with only the bass of Arild Andersen for accompaniment; and Archie Shepp blows freely on a version of Grachan Moncur III's "Sonny's Back", in a group with Dave Burrell, Don Garrett, and Muhammad Ali. Perhaps the most striking track, though, is "The Creators" by Bobby Hutcherson – played with his group that included Harold Land and Hal Galper, and performed in an 18 minute reading that builds beautifully, into the dancing soul jazz sound that was Hutcherson's best contribution to jazz at the time! Groundbreaking work from the legendary Ahmad Jamal – not just in his own career, but in live jazz in general! The album's a classic recording of Jamal's trio with Israel Crosby on bass and Vernell Fournier on drums – captured at the Pershing Lounge on the south side of Chicago, where Jamal was clearly wowing the crowd with his amazing talents on the piano. The groove here is sublimely fluid and soulful – clearly the next wave of expression on the piano in the 50s, and as important to the Chicago scene as Bill Evans was to that of New York at the time. The recording quality is wonderful – clear enough to capture the subtleties of Crosby's amazing bass, and the lightly tippling sound of Fournier's drums – and titles include a classic extended reading of "Poinciana", plus "What's New", "But Not For Me", and "No Greater Love". A fantastic tribute to the overlooked genius of British pianist Mike Taylor – an artist who made a few key contributions in the late 60s, before turning up dead in the River Thames at the young age of 31! The core of the package is Mike's debut Trio album – a lost set of modernist piano jazz from the British scene of the late 60s – very much in the mode of the best American work of the time by pianists like Steve Kuhn or Don Friedman! Taylor's got an incredible touch on the keys – a post-Bill Evans mode that uses space as much a sound, and which paints in broad colors and tones that seem to glisten in their own unique place in the musical spectrum. The sound is free, but never too "out" – and the trio performs a number of strong originals like "Just A Blues", "Two Autumns", "Guru", and "Abena" – plus completely transformed versions of "Stella By Starlight" and "All The Things You Are". CD then also includes one quartet track from the album Pendulum – recorded with Dave Tomlin on soprano sax, in a 14 minute take on "Night In Tunisia". Then, the set really steps into a few surprises – as Taylor composed the music for a few Cream tracks (bassist Jack Bruce was an early jazz partner of Mike) – so the set features the early Cream recordings of "Passing The Time", "Pressed Rat & Warthog", and "Those Were The Days". The bulk of the record is from a 1958 performance at Cafe Bohemia in May – with the pair backed by a trio that features Bill Evans, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones on tracks that include "So What", "Milestones", "Walkin", "Four", and "Bye Bye Blackbird". A cheesy cover but a wonderful album – incredibly sensitive piano trio work from Fumio Karashima – easily one of our favorite players from the Japanese scene of his time! Fumio has a way with a tune that's really amazing – a talent for penning and playing original material that's filled with subtle emotion, warm shades of color, and a depth of expression that really makes him stand out from the pack. There's certainly a Bill Evans influence going on here, but Karashima's also prone to bolder moments on the keys as well – a bit of a McCoy Tyner touch at the best moments. Trio features Nobuyoshi Ino on bass and George Ohtsuka on drums – and titles include "Mum", "Starting Off", "Brother", "Who Are You", and "Little Island". CD

Sensitive solo material from pianist Kunihiko Sugano – a set that features shorter tracks than some of his trio albums of the time, but done with an equal amount of feeling! Sugano's got this gentle, spacious touch on the piano – a bit like Bill Evans, but also with phrasing that might also make you think he's approaching the acoustic instrument as if it was an electric one – the way the notes have a very moderate sense of attack, yet spin out with a very long sustain after they are struck! The style is beautiful, and very much Sugano's own – and titles include "Mood", "Dreaming Of Home & Mother", "You Are Too Beautiful", "Dear Old Stockholm", and "I Get A Kick Out Of You". CD

Rare work from the legendary bassist Scott LaFaro – an obscure early 60s recording, made before his untimely early death! LaFaro's caught here in the company of pianist Don Friedman and drummer Pete LaRoca – both inventive modernists who really share his creative conception of a groove – a school of trio expression that's certainly informed by the late 50s influence of Bill Evans, but which also takes off in some wonderfully bright directions of its own! Titles include "Sacre Bleu", "Green Dolphin Street", "I Hear A Rhapsody", "Woody N You", and "My Foolish Heart". An obscure little session from Kenny Burrell – recorded at the end of the 70s, and with a very laidback feel! The set was produced by Helen Keane, who'd done some of Bill Evans' greatest sets – and who had a real ear for the mellower side of the jazz spectrum. And for the record, she's got Kenny playing in a trio format that's very spacious – with only gentle accompaniment from Reggie Johnson on bass and Sherman Ferguson on drums, and most of the sound on the set coming from the strings of Kenny's guitar. Following in the gentle spirit of the set, Kenny even plays an acoustic guitar on 2 numbers – making for a very different sound than usual. Some tracks are quite long, really letting Kenny open up on his solos – and titles include "So Little Time", "All Blues", "I'm Glad There Is You", and "You & The Night & The Music". A great little set from Friedman – a vastly underrated pianist who's working here as a bright young modernist in a trio with Chuck Israels on bass and Pete LaRoca on drums. The tracks have a freedom that reminds us a lot of Bill Evans' early work, with a warm lyricism that never gets too hokey – yet isn't afraid to show itself in Friedman's original compositions. An obscure 70s trio session from pianist Tommy Flanagan – and one that really gets at the full depths of his lyrical talents on the keys! As the title implies, the session features Tommy working through a host of Harold Arlen standards – all familiar numbers, but performed here with a fluid grace that's completely sublime – a gentle soul that almost has echoes of some of the later work of Bill Evans, but a bit more of a sense of presence overall. The trio features George Mraz on bass and Connie Kay on drums – but many passages just have Flanagan's piano gliding along on its own, magically setting the pace for the tunes before the rhythm even comes into the mix. Helen Merrill guests on vocals on a version of "Last Night When We Were Young" – and other tunes include "Out Of This World", "Sleepin Bee", "Ill Wind", "My Shining Hour", and "Get Happy". Two rare albums from this great pianist – back to back on a single CD! First up is Jazz Argentino – key work from Ruben Lopez Furst, a wonderful pianist from the Argentine scene of the 60s – heard here on one of his greatest albums ever! Despite the local placement in the title, the set's got a really universal appeal – a quality that easily puts Baby Lopez Furst in the company of Bill Evans, Hampton Hawes, or a rare few imaginative pianists from up north! Furst's sense of color and timing are wonderful – ringing out fluidly, yet always with a sense of surprise that keeps us hanging on each new note – nothing that's ever hokey or heard-before – handled here with a vibrancy that's simply stunning. Many numbers are trio tracks, but the set also features guest trumpet and tenor on two tracks – and titles include "Israel", "Un Abajea Duriente", "Los Viejos", "Al Este Del Sol", "Sometime Ago", and "Cartas De Amor". Next is Jazz En La Universidad – one of the real highlights of the Argentine jazz scene of the 60s – a seminal album from pianist Ruben "Baby" Lopez – easily one of that country's greatest jazz musicians in the decade! Ruben's got a sound that opens up with the lyrical sense of space and tone first introduced by Bill Evans, but he's also more note-full at other moments – playing with a command of the piano that would have made him huge, had he recorded on the American or European scenes of the time! There's a warm balance between his instrument, the bass of Jorge Gonzalez, and drums of Nestor Astratta – one that goes past conventional piano trio modes, and which really reminds us of our favorite Saba/MPS sessions of the period. Titles include "Un Poco Alegre", "Hombre Amaestrado", "En Tu Dulce Modo", "Hermosoa Amor", and "Necesitare Alguien Mas". CD

One of the few albums we've ever seen as a leader from Eddie Gomez – the bassist whose work with Bill Evans and others was such a huge contribution to jazz in the late 60s and 1970s! Eddie's working here in a trio format that's a fair bit more harder-grooving than his years with Evans – a lineup that includes Chick Corea on both acoustic piano and keyboards, Steve Gadd on drums, and some additional guitar on a few tracks from Kazumi Watanabe – playing here with a restrained quality that's much appreciated in the format of the record. Gadd's heavy bottom makes a number of the tunes snap along nicely, followed by powerful keys from Chick – and Gomez's bass hits some of the fuller tones we remember from his work with Jeremy Steig many years before.
