Nat Adderley & The Big Sax SectionThat's Right! ... CD
Riverside, 1960. Used ... $6.99
Nat's trumpet is backed up by the "big sax section" here – a trio of reed players that includes Yusef Lateef, Jimmy Heath, and Charlie Rouse, plus some additional baritone work by Tate Houston. The groove's pretty swinging – kind of in the mode of early work with Cannonball Adderley in that it's not as "in the pocket" soul jazz wise, but still quite strong overall. Heath and Jimmy Jones did the arrangements, and the rhythm section features Wynton Kelly, Sam Jones, and Jimmy Cobb. Tracks include "Tadd", "The Old Country", "Chordnation", and "ESP". CD

Toshiko Akiyoshi/Lew Tabackin Big BandFrom Toshiko With Love (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
RCA (Japan), 1981. New Copy ... $24.99
One of the lesser-known albums in the great run of big band records cut by pianist Toshiko Akiyoshi and reedman Lew Tabackin – and a set with a bit of a difference, too – as this time out, Tabackin wrote all the tunes, although Toshiko still handles all the arrangements and orchestrations! Some of the numbers are a bit shorter than on some of the other TALT group recordings – and it might be our imagination, but they also seem to have some more pronounced reed solos – moments that really remind us what a great saxophonist Tabackin can be, and a master of the powerful, yet understated emotional moment. Titles include "Tanuki's Night Out", "Falling Petal", "Yet Another Tear", and "A Bit Byas'd". CD

Toshiko Akiyoshi/Lew Tabackin Big BandLong Yellow Road (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
RCA (Japan), 1975. New Copy ... $18.99
A 70s classic from the team of Toshiko Akioshi and Lew Tabackin – a duo who did for the jazz ensemble mode in their generation what Kenny Clarke and Francy Boland did in the 60s! The material here is wonderfully inventive – the kind of compositions that Toshiko wouldn't have even written in her smaller combo years – fleshed out here by a fantastic group that includes Lew Tabackin and Gary Foster on reeds, and Bobby Shew and Don Rader on trumpets – all in a setting where the voices of the individual members really get a lot of space to shine! Titles include "Since Perry", "Opus No Zero", "Long Yellow Road", "First Night", "Children In The Temple Ground", and "Yet Another Tear". CD

Toshiko Akiyoshi/Lew Tabackin Big BandMarch Of The Tadpoles (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
RCA (Japan), 1977. New Copy ... $18.99
It's hard to get at the brilliance of the 70s albums from Toshiko Akiyoshi and Lew Tabackin in words – but we'll try just a bit! The records are almost an anomaly – creative big band records at a time when most folks were leaving the format behind – put together by a duo who weren't really stars in the years before, at least on the American market – but who really found a way to shine in this new setting! Toshiko composed and arranged all the material – opening up a whole new depth in her songwriting – and she also delivers superb piano solos that have the dexterity of her earlier work, but also a new level of complexity too. Tabackin is wonderful as well – fantastic on flute and tenor – and also providing strong inspiration to reed soloists Dick Spencer and Gary Foster too. Emil Richards does a nice percussion solo on one track – and titles include "Notorious Tourist From East", "Deracinated Flower", "Yellow Is Mellow", and "Mobile". CD

Big Band KatowiceMusic For My Friends ... CD
Polskie Nagrania (Poland), 1977. Used ... $14.99
Funky big band from Poland – a very groovy set that's right up there with the best large group 70s sessions on MPS! The group here is very heavy on the horns – lots of trumpets and saxes – underscored by some hipper rhythms that include a bit of guitar, electric bass, and keyboards – never too much to make the record an electric one, but enough to push an older jazz mode into some groovier territory for the 70s! There's a tight stepping feel to the best numbers, and a soaring, spacious sensibility to the rest – almost a soundtrack sort of approach, given the deep colors and tones in the set. The album features a great funky remake of "Madrox", with a nice cop show break at the start, plus the funky numbers "Hey Man", "Sorcery", and "Music For My Friends". CD

Big BlackBig Black & The Blues ... LP
Uni, 1972. Near Mint- ... $19.99
Not your typical blues, despite the title – and a set that's got a nice mix of folk and funk influences running through the tunes! The overall style is certainly more bluesy than other records by Big Black – in that it features a bit less percussion and a lot more vocals – often on original compositions that are sung in a style that's earthily soulful. There's almost echoes of Terry Callier in the mix, but the overall sound is a lot more rootsy – and titles include "MM Baby", "People are Talkin'", "I Sat and Moan", "Coal Black Eyes", and "Shu-Be-Du". A very cool little record from percussionist Big Black – and one of his hippest too! The record features only percussion by Black, plus bits of guitar by Anthony Wheaton – making for a set that's mostly raw, stripped-down percussion tracks – most of which are quite long, and have Black really jamming out on tumbas and bongos! Titles include "China Lake", "Jigs", "Trinidad", and the excellent "Afro-Cuban Lullaby". LP, Vinyl record album

Big BoysNo Matter How Long The Line At The Cafeteria, There's Always a Seat ... LP
Enigma, 1985. Sealed ... $34.99
The last album by Big Boys – and it's a really good one! Unlike a lot of their 80s underground rock peers, who outstayed their welcomes and put out some pretty lousy records before fizzing out, The Big Boys' swan song actually improves on some clumsier material in the preceding couple of years. Their distinctive way of bringing funky horns into aggressive 80s punk paved the way for a whole heap of bands to come – for better AND for worse, to be honest – but they really found away to make it a bit more cohesive by the end. The even bring a little bit of old school hip hop turntable scratches into this one, which was the next (and last) logical step for the band. Like their earlier records, it's still profoundly punk rock at the core, just far more colorful than most from the same period. Includes "No", "Narrow View", "I Do Care", "Listen", "What's The Word?", "Common Beat", "No Love", "Which Way To Go", " LP, Vinyl record album

Mainstream, 1967. Very Good+ ... $26.99
The first full album featuring the incredible voice of Janis Joplin, as the singer of Big Brother & The Holding Company! Even at this early point, it's clear that there's some really incredible things happening with this band. Originally released on Mainstream, the production is a bit thin compared to the bigger sounding records to come, hich actually works incredibly well – as Janis's voice just tears right through in a really exciting way. The rawer Big Brother backdrop is great, too! Titles include "Easy Rider", "Bye, Bye Baby", "Intruder", "Women Is Losers", Moondog's "All Is Lonliness", and "Down On Me". LP, Vinyl record album

Big Horns BeeWhy Can't We Be Friends ... CD
Victor (Japan), 2004. Used ... $24.99
A smoking set of funky horns from Japan – played by a group who are clearly drawing influences from The JBs, The Memphis Horns, and a host of smaller combos from the swinging 60s! The sound here is very much in keeping with the "big horns" title – but not in any sort of hokey way at all, as the combo's got a lean and hard-grooving sound that's more than enough to take all of its influences and filter them together with a rich new sound! There's plenty of wah-wah guitar and heavy organ next to the horns – and the album features great remakes of "Why Can't We Be Friends" and "Mission Impossible" – plus the tunes "Nutville", "Vamp Intro", "Peace Of Love", and "Rum & Peace". Big MaybelleBig Maybelle Got A Brand New Bag (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
Rojac/Traffic, 1967. New Copy ... $7.99 16.98
Big Maybelle's got a new bag – and we like it! This tasty set was cut for the tiny Rojac label in between Maybelle's earlier years at Savoy and later albums on Brunswick – and it's got a swinging, 60s mod sort of style that's pretty darn groovy, baby! The arrangements are by Bob Gallo, and most of the tracks are 60s pop and soul standards – but Maybelle sings them with a gusty, sincere style – and brings a really great approach to the album – almost giving it the feel of some of the best Tangerine label albums from the decade. Titles include "Eggplant That Ate Chicago", "I Can't Control Myself", "Coming On Strong", "Mellow Yellow", "96 Tears", "Eleanor Rigby", and "Black Is Black". Kind of nutty, but it kind of works! CD

A great set that may well be Big Maybelle's best record ever – really rare work that's quite different than her famous work of the 50s! The set was recorded in the Criteria studios in Miami – and it's got a cool southern soul sound that's part Bobby Blue Bland bluesy soul, and part Muscle Shoals funk – fused together wonderfully by arranger Eric Knight – who really has a great ear for giving Maybelle a wicked new groove! Maybelle's vocals are a bit deeper than usual – much more soul than the blues of a decade before – and tracks include "This Bitter Earth", "How It Lies", "Old Love Never Dies", "My Mother's Eyes", and "Love Careless Love". Big Star#1 Record (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Ardent/Craft, 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
The amazing first album from Big Star – a set that came out of nowhere, made hardly a ripple on the charts, yet went onto crash in big waves of sound for generations to come! The style here is unlike thing else before – hardly what you'd expect from the group's Memphis roots or Alex Chilton's previous performances – yet the group's music has become a generation-defining sound in the way it blends southern inflections with harder rock influences, and a lean, gritty quality that's arguably in a late 70s space between punk and power pop. Every element is wonderful – guitars that are powerful, but never indulgent – vocals that are moving, but never overly emotive – and a balance between sensitive and searing moments that even The Replacements could never hope to match. A landmark all the way through – with tracks that include "Feel", "Ballad Of El Goodo", "In The Street", "The India Song", "When My Baby's Beside Me", "Give Me Another Chance", "Don't Lie To Me", "Thirteen", "Watch The Sunrise", and "Try Again". Bill's got a very confident approach here – a "bigness" that moves past any sort of broken down cliches, and which pushes the lyrics with a charm that really comes through, even past the simpler recording techniques. Most numbers feature deft guitar work from Broonzy alongside the vocals – and titles include "Brownskin Shuffle", "Banker's Blues", "Stove Pipe Stomp", "Hokum Stomp", "Hip Shakin Strut", "I Can't Be Satisfied", and "Saturday Night Rub". Easily the hippest of the Clarke-Boland Big Band Records from the classic years – a set of hard grooving tracks that really pushes the envelope of their style! There's a few elements here that are different than usual – such as the presence of electric piano on a few tracks, which creates a very new sound for the group, the presence of some exotic jazz influences (perhaps borrowed from the MPS Jazz Meets The World series), and the use of some edgier compositions on the set, including work by late 60s European free-thinkers, like Eddie Louiss, Albert Mangelsdorff, and John Surman. The reed work is really incredible in this setting – and is handled by Sahib Shihab, Ronnie Scott, Billy Mitchell, and Derek Humble – all of whom seem to blow with inspiration from Surman – using tones that are far more out there than usual. Titles include "Exorcisme", "Sakara", "Our Kind Of Sabi", "Osaka Calling", "Wintersong", and "Astrorama". CD

Atlantic, 1968. Very Good+ ... $4.99
An unusual session from the great Clare Fischer – although probably his best-known record as well! Clare cut many other jazz sides in a smaller, more intimate setting – but this album features his full talents as a larger arranger – working with a hip ensemble, and turning in some great charts that really keep things on edge! Fischer plays both Fender Rhodes and piano – and the group's got some great west coast help from Bill Perkins and Warne Marsh on tenors, Gary Foster on alto, and Conte Candoli on trumpet – all playing with a bit more sharpness here than usual. There's a nicely off-kilter edge – similar to that which you might hear in some of Clare's work with Cal Tjader – or some of his larger arranging projects for labels like MPS. ✨✧ Elliot Lawrence Big BandSwings Cohn & Kahn ... CD
Fantasy, Mid 50s. Used ... $9.99
Bold work from Elliot Lawrence – one of the groovier big band leaders on the west coast of the 50s – and one of the few who really found a way to mix older modes and some of the modern changes going on at the time! Lawrence's music almost always has a groove – his audience were often dancers at some of the bigger spots on the coast – but he also finds a way to fold in some strong solo work too, but all without some of the more academic tones that would come from a group like Stan Kenton's. Key soloists here include Al Cohn and Zoot Sims on tenor, Hal McKusick on alto, Nick Travis and Ernie Royal on trumpets, and Eddie Bert and Urbie Green on trombone – and the set features material from the albums Plays Tiny Kahn & Johnny Mandel Arrangements, Swinging At The Steel Pier, and Plays For Swinging Dancers. Titles include "Blue Room", "Who Fard That Shot", "Blues Alley", "Ponce", "Tenderly", "Walkin My Baby Back Home", "Hackin Around", "Cupcake", "Ivy Walk", "Handmade", "Nightfall", "Jazz Lullaby", and "Mood Midnight". Nice obscure set of blues material recorded for United Artists – featuring the little-known Big Miller performing a set of 11 compositions from the pen of Langston Hughes. Tracks include "Cool Saturday Night", "Five O'Clock Blues", "Did You Ever Hear The Blues?", "Lament", and "Got To Live". LP, Vinyl record album

Mark Murphy/Clarke Boland Big BandMidnight Mood (Japanese pressing) ... CD
MPS (Japan), 1967. Used ... $18.99
A fantastic set from vocalist Mark Murphy – easily one of his greatest albums ever! The session was recorded for the MPS label in Germany during the late 60s – at a time when Murphy was recording some excellent work overseas – and the album features backings by a small combo peeled off of the legendary Clark-Boland Big Band, who were also working for MPS at the time! Murphy's vocals get some tremendous backing on the set from a combo that includes Jimmy Deuchar on trumpet, Sahib Shihab on baritone and flute, Derek Humble on alto, and Ronnie Scott on tenor – and the grooves are a mix of modal numbers and straight jazz tunes – almost always dancing together in a lovely way that unlocks a side of Murphy's talents that hadn't been recorded this way before. And in fact, the album's gone onto have a huge influence on the current sound of club jazz – and is a key inspiration for the work of Nicola Conte, Koop, Five Corners Quintet, and others! The vocals are perfect, too – with nary a hint of overindulgence, and always a sweet measured groove that works perfectly with the material – and titles include "My Ship", "I Don't Want Nothin", "Hopeless", "Sconsolato", "Why & How", and "Just Give Me Time". Oliver Nelson's Big BandLive From Los Angeles ... LP
Impulse, 1967. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $9.99
A unique little outing for Oliver Nelson – one that breaks him out of the familiar territory of the studio, and puts him in a much more spontaneous live setting! Nelson's playing soprano sax on the album – using the instrument in an edgey way that has echoes of Coltrane, yet which also fits in nicely with the usual Nelson groove – a fully soulful approach to a larger ensemble, heard famously on countless sessions for other artists in the 60s, but even better hear with Oliver at the helm! Other players on the record include Bobby Bryant, Tom Scott, Frank Strazzeri, Mel Brown, and Lou Blackburn – coming together with Nelson in a hip take on the west coast soul jazz groove of the time. Titles include Nelson's own "Miss Fine" and "Guitar Blues", plus lively versions of "Night Train" and "Milestones". LP, Vinyl record album

An nice array of work from British pianist/bandleader/arranger Harry South – one of the most important large group talents of the late 50s, and an artist who helped shepherd British jazz through a range of stylistic periods – from straight big band of the postwar years, to mod moments in the 60s, to even some sound library-styled work near the end of this set! The range of musicians who worked with South on these tracks is incredible – almost a who's who of British jazz – as the set features work from some of the top talents of the scene at the time – either as leaders, or as sidemen on some of the dates. Titles include "Orient Line" by Tubby Hayes, "Liggin" by Joe Harriott, Slidin" by Ronnie Ross, "Minor Incident" by Dick Morrissey, and "Signing Out", "Raga (edit)", "Storm Warning", and "The Goblin" by Harry South himself. Big Mama Thornton may well be best-remembered as the woman who gave the world "Hound Dog" – which later catapulted Elvis to fame – but over the years she continued to be a hell of a singer, with a rich legacy of music that more than stands on its own! Witness this mid 60s performance from London – with the singer backed by small group instrumentation that includes Shakey Horton on harmonica, Eddie Boyd on piano and organ, and a young Buddy Guy on guitar – players who are definitely blues, but who often bring some slight funky soul currents to the music, too – which seems to give Thornton one of her best showcases ever on record. The album's a gem – maybe one of her best – and titles include "Down Home Shake Down", "Sweet Little Angel", "The Place", "Little Red Rooster", "Swing It On home", and "Session Blues". A really unique project dedicated to the life and work of Cuban patriot Jose Marti – a set that's based around Marti's own writings, and delivered in a style that's a bit different than more familiar Afro-Cuban jazz! There's definitely some Latin elements in the mix, but the arranging style is richer, more full of feeling – taking more from the work on reeds, trumpets, and trombones than the percussion – and opening up at all the right points for the vocal passages, which are delivered by Camila Meza and Sofia Rei, who shift from track to track throughout the song cycle. Leader Manuel Valera plays piano, keyboards, and celeste – and titles include "El Enemigo Brutal", "Yo Quiero Salir Del Mundo", "Por Sus Ojos Ecendidos", "Odio La Mascara Y El Vicio", and "Si Quiere Que De Este Mundo". A great little live set from the glory days of the Toshiko Akiyoshi/Lew Tabackin Big Band – a series of performances from Japan, recorded in 1976, all featuring the ensemble at its best! The double-length nature of the record takes the group even farther than usual – really letting them stretch out with the kind of bold tones and broad colors that made the group so great. Soloists include Bobby Shew on trumpet, Jimmy Knepper on trombone, and Gary Foster on alto sax – alongside leaders Lew Tabackin on tenor and flute, and Toshiko Akioshi on piano. Always-amazing work from the team of pianist Toshiko Akiyoshi and reedman Lew Tabackin – and a set that may well be one of the ensemble's most ambitious records to date – given that side two features a long, complicated suite that has roots in older Japanese musical styles! The balance here is great – side one has the kind of swinging shorter (although still long by most standards) numbers that the group could make explode with color and imagination – and side two features the long "Minamata" suite, which has vocals from a young Monday Michiru, and from singer Hisao Kanze. Other tracks include "Studio J", "Transience", and "Sumie" – and the lineup here features most of the group's key members of the 70s – including the great Gary Foster on reeds! LP, Vinyl record album

Akiyoshi emerges as a stunning composer, and a great arranger too – able to balance the individual solo voices of the members of the group, while also letting the whole thing open up and soar – bold colors that are cut through nicely by her own solo work in the set! In addition to saxes and flutes from Tabackin, the set also features more saxes from Gary Foster, Bill Perkins, and Dick Spencer – plus trombone from Bill Reichenbach and Britt Woman, and trumpets from Bobby Shew and Mike Price. MPS/Rearward (Italy), 1969. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A large group in a small club – the legendary Clarke Boland Big Band, playing at the home turf of one of their key members – tenorist Ronnie Scott! The set features a very legendary performance by the ensemble – a crack lineup that's easily one of the best ever sported by the CBBB – perfectly mixing American rhythms, and a trans-Atlantic lineup of soloists – all tied together with just the sort of rich arrangements that make the group so great! Things groove right from the get-go – thanks to a rhythm lineup that features Kenny Clarke on drums, and Francy Boland on piano – plus bassist Ron Matthewson, sitting in for the usual Jimmy Woode. The horn players really send things off, though – tight trumpets from Benny Bailey, Idrees Sulieman, and Dusko Goykovich; bold trombones from Ake Persson and Nat Peck; and some searing reed lines from Johnny Griffin and Ronnie Scott on tenor, Derek Humble on alto, Sahib Shihab on baritone, and Tony Coe on both tenor and clarinet. This CD features both the first and second sets at Scotts by the group – albums titled Volcano and Rue Chaptal – with titles that include "Volcano", "Griff's Groove", "Now Hear My Meanin", "Box 703 Washington DC", "Thence We Issued Out Again to See the Stars", "Rue Chaptal", "I Don't Want Nothin From Nobody & I Ain't Giving Nothin Away", "Sax No End", "Minor Blues", and "The Girl & The Turk". Orrin Evans is a hell of a pianist, but he's also a hell of a bandleader too – stepping out here with his excellent Captain Black Big Band – an always-great unit that shows off a whole new dimension of Evans' mighty talents! The music is rich and bold right from the start – and clearly, the leader is much more of a mutual participant in the proceedings than the boss – as the horns alone have these individual flourishes and power as a whole that's really amazing – a sense of color and richness that's very distinct from Orrin's piano, and which maybe gets even more presence in the mix. Players include Todd Bashore, Immanuel Wilkins, and Caleb Wheeler Curtis on alto saxes; Josh Lawrence, Sean Jones, and Thomas Marriott on trumpets; David Gibson, Reggie Watkins, and Stafford Hunter on trombones; Troy Roberts on tenor; Stacy Dillard on soprano; Luques Curtis and Madison Rast on bass; Jason Brown and Mark Whitfield Jr on drums; and Evans on piano. A few tracks feature slight vocal contributions – and titles include "That Too", "A Time For Love", "Proclaim Liberty", "Tough Love", and "I'm So Glad I Got To Know You". CD

We love the music of pianist Orrin Evans in many different ways – but we especially love the sounds he makes with his Captain Black Big Band – a really tremendous ensemble that seems to unlock a whole new dynamic energy in his performance! The group here is heavy on horns – two trumpets, two trombones, alto and tenor – shifting a bit throughout the concert here, and really rising wonderfully from the energy that Evans brings on piano! Orrin's sense of sound is beautiful – bold, rich, and visionary – while also still allowing plenty of room for the individual players to really do their thing – as the long tracks here are awash in great solos that have as much power on their own as the ensemble. Rhythm is from Madison Rast on bass and either Anwar Marshall or Jason Brown on drums – and titles include "Trams", "Flip The Script", "Onward", "Question", "The Scythe", and "Answer". CD

✨✧ Jimmy McGriff Big BandTribute To Basie ... CD
LRC, 1966. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A Basie tribute, but a really smoking one – thanks to some hard swinging arrangements from Manny Albam, and plenty of heavy Hammond from the great Jimmy McGriff! The tracks are mostly numbers from the Count Basie songbook of the 50s and 60s, but they're strongly reworked here with a swinging 60s vibe – played with lots of strong horn work in the background, all used as a perfect foil for Jimmy's leaner organ solos over the top! The style's quite similar to other big band organ work of the time – particularly records made by Jimmy Smith in collaboration with Oliver Nelson, or Jack McDuff with Benny Golson – and McGriff's organ comes through nice and clean in the mix, with that sharply fluttering sound that really made him one of the true standouts of the 60s. Titles include "Hob Nail Boogie", "Cute", "Every Day", "Blues Go Away", and "Slow But Sure". CD

Production by Organized Noize, Scott Storch, J Beattzz, DJ Cutmasta Swiff and others, many songs with co-production credit to Big Boi, and we would take that seriously. The way his deft, charismatic rhymes meld with spacey thumping funk beatcraft doesn't feel like a batch of commissioned productions, but a unique, flowing tapestry that's got Big Boi written all over it.
