✨✧ BetweenAnd The Waters Opened ... LP
Vertigo/Wah Wah (Spain), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the weirdest, wildest records ever issued on the Vertigo label in the 70s – and that's saying a lot, given the reputation of the legendary imprint! There's a bit of vocals on the record, but most of the energy comes from longer-form musical progressions – sometimes more rhythmic, but often times with a heavy sonic drone approach – served up in a blend of percussion, oboe, and keyboards – peppered with work on guitar, motocello, and an adapted harp! The blend is wonderful – unlike anything we can easily describe, and often making you think there's a lot more going on than just a few guys playing in the studio together – almost a vibe like some of the famous Lansdowne Series recordings in the UK. Titles include "And The Waters Opened", "Uroboros", "Syn", "Devotion", "Happy Stage", and "Samum". LP, Vinyl record album

Ariel BartIn Between ... CD
Ropeadope, 2021. New Copy ... $9.99 13.99
A beautiful new voice in the small world of jazz harmonica – one who certainly resonates with echoes of the past, but finds a way to open up the instrument in a setting that's much more spiritual than we might have expected! Ariel Bart blows her instrument with a great sense of color here, and works in a quintet that features Mayu Shivro on cello, David Mitchell on bass, Moshe Elmakias on piano, and Amir Bar Akiva on drums – all musicians who have this gently flowering quality together – maybe slow modal style, with these progressions that open up with a tentative energy at first, then illuminate wonderfully once Bart's instrument slides into a solo. Titles are all original, and include "Deep Down", "Colors Palette", "Spiritual Wars", "The Year After", and "In Between". CD

Oscar Brown Jr.Between Heaven & Hell ... LP
Columbia, 1962. Very Good+ ... $7.99
Great early work from Oscar Brown Jr – a hip mix of jazz and soul, working in Brown's unique sense of showmanship, and his almost beat-like flair with a lyric! Ralph Burns and Quincy Jones handled the arrangements – and the album's filled with great original tracks by Brown, including "Mr. Kicks", "Opportunity, Please Knock", Love is Like a New Born Child", "Elegy (Plain Black Boy)", "Hazel's Hips", and many more! Nice jazzy groove, and very much in the best style of Oscar's 60s work! LP, Vinyl record album

Orrin Evans & The Captain Black Big BandIntangible Between ... CD
Smoke Sessions, 2020. New Copy ... $13.99 17.99
Orrin Evans is a hell of a pianist, but he's also a hell of a bandleader too – stepping out here with his excellent Captain Black Big Band – an always-great unit that shows off a whole new dimension of Evans' mighty talents! The music is rich and bold right from the start – and clearly, the leader is much more of a mutual participant in the proceedings than the boss – as the horns alone have these individual flourishes and power as a whole that's really amazing – a sense of color and richness that's very distinct from Orrin's piano, and which maybe gets even more presence in the mix. Players include Todd Bashore, Immanuel Wilkins, and Caleb Wheeler Curtis on alto saxes; Josh Lawrence, Sean Jones, and Thomas Marriott on trumpets; David Gibson, Reggie Watkins, and Stafford Hunter on trombones; Troy Roberts on tenor; Stacy Dillard on soprano; Luques Curtis and Madison Rast on bass; Jason Brown and Mark Whitfield Jr on drums; and Evans on piano. A few tracks feature slight vocal contributions – and titles include "That Too", "A Time For Love", "Proclaim Liberty", "Tough Love", and "I'm So Glad I Got To Know You". CD

Michel LegrandSuites From Umbrellas Of Cherbourg & Go-Between ... LP
Columbia, 1979. Near Mint- ... $9.99
An unusual take on the soundtrack work of Michel Legrand – a session recorded in England at the end of the 70s, with Legrand conducting full orchestral versions of some of his best compositions! The sound here is quite ambitious, and the record features two long tracks that each take up a side apiece – one extended extrapolation of Legrand's famous score for Umbrellas Of Cherbourg, and a second set of themes and variations on the soundtrack for The Go-Between. Legrand plays piano with Robert Noble on the second track – which showcases some very dramatic piano lines – and other players include Michael Reeves on harpsichord, Bobby Haughey and Alan Downey on trumpets, Dave Horler on trombone, and Phil Lee on electric guitar. Sun RaAngels & Demons At Play/Between Two Worlds/Spontaneous Simplicity ... 7-inch
Art Yard (UK), Early 60s. New Copy ... $19.99
A stunning package of work from the early days of Sun Ra & The Arkestra – three really wonderful tracks that are well-deserving of issue on a 45! "Angels & Demons At Play" is perhaps one of the greatest illustrations of the way that Ra took all of the exotic currents in postwar music and pushed them into his own cosmic directions – using a wonderful modal rhythm, mixed with some of the percussion effects you might have heard from Martin Denny or Les Baxter – then topping things with a wonderful flute solo that really sends things home! "Between Two Worlds" builds things up in a similar modal rhythm, but more choppy – with stark energy on the percussion that's echoed by the beautiful reed work of the tune! "Spontaneous Simplicity" is a bit looser and more spiritual – a real precursor to some of the directions that other jazz artists would pick up in years to come! 7-inch, Vinyl record

VariousSomewhere Between – Mutant Pop, Electronic Minimalism, & Shadow Sounds Of Japan 1980 to 1988 ... LP
Light In The Attic, 1980s. New Copy 2LP ... $29.99 32.99
A much deeper dip into the Japanese scene of the 80s than similar collections of this nature – as the package brings together work with a very specific vibe, and one that's maybe not quite like some of the more mainstream music that was getting exported at the time! Most of these tracks have never been available outside of Japan, and some are from the farther reaches of the indie scene – done in a mode that's not quite like the more polished electronic pop of the decade, but which also has more going on than some of the minimalist music too! There's some darker moments that maybe resonate just a bit with cold wave material from the European scene, but other tracks have a warmer vibe, and an occasional groove – making for a really unusual discovery of sounds you're not likely to hear otherwise. Titles include "Arrows & Eyes" by Noriko Miyamoto, "Days Man" by Yoshio Ojima, "Akatere" by Wa Ha Ha, "Area" by Neo Museum, "Wedding With God" by Soniko, "Koneko To Watashi" by Takami Hasegawa, "Yakan Hikou" by Naoki Asai, "Weimar 22" by RNA Organism, "Sweet Sultan" by D Day, and "Hasu No Enishi" by Dip In The Pool. ✨✧ Keith JarrettEl Juicio (The Judgement)/Life Between The Exit Signs ... CD
Atlantic/Collectables, 1968/1975. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
2 obscure early sessions by Keith Jarrett – back to back on one CD! El Juicio is wild and wonderful work by Keith – light years away from his records on ECM! The album features a quartet that includes Dewey Redman on tenor, Charlie Haden on bass, and Paul Motian on drums – but it's clearly Keith who's driving the bus here, taking lots of odd twists and turns for playful moments that come as an unexpected surprise. One of the best of these is the short percussion track "Pre Judgement Atmosphere", which almost sounds like a Moondog number – and another is the rollingly funky "Gypsy Moth", a tune that always seems to be careening out of control, but is never "outside", just percussively grooving. Side two features two longer jamming tracks that almost have a loft jazz feel – "El Juicio" and "Piece For Ornette" – and Keith plays alone on the track "Pardon My Rags". Life Between The Exit Signs is early trio work by Keith, a bit straighter than some of his 70s recordings – but in a good way, with kind of a New York modern groove that reminds us of early work by Paul Bley or Steve Kuhn! The trio's a very progressive group – with Charlie Haden on bass and Paul Motian on drums, making for a really open-ended approach to the rhythms – and the album includes the original compositions "Church Dreams", "Margot", "Long Time Gone", and "Love No 1 & 2". Kiefer's got a very solitary look on the cover – and there's mostly a solitary look to the record – that mellow, intimate blend of beats and keyboard work that makes his music a great instrumental bridge between hip hop and jazz! The thing we love about Kiefer is that he's always very subtle – he never needs to hit you over the head with his music, and instead keeps things open with a really wonderful sense of flow – sometimes more hewn to the rhythms, sometimes with just the right space for jazzy solo. Two tracks feature trumpet – Sara Sithi Amnuai on "Friends", and Theo Croker on a great remake of "Everybody Loves The Sunshine", which features Kiefer on toy piano! Other titles include "Superhero", "Labored Breathing", "Work & Purpose", "Running Out The Clock", and "His Heart Grew Three Sizes". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Barre PhillipsThirty Years In Between (Ahoy/Camouflage) ... CD
Victo (Canada), 1989/2020. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A pair of different performances from this legendary bassist – each recorded thirty years apart! The set begins with Ahoy – a sublime solo set recorded at Victoriaville in 2019 – a performance done by a very aged Phillips, but a musician who's clearly very much in control of his instrument – able to handle the bass with the range of colors and approaches that made him one of the key talents on his instrument to emerge in the 60s! Some passages are fiercely plucked, others are beautifully bowed – and there's almost a balance here between some of Barre's more spacious performances for ECM, and his more dynamic side of free improvisation. Titles include "What To Do What To Do", "Abate Arise", "Ahoy", "You There On The Hill", "A New Take", and "A Quake's A Coming". Camouflage is a really unique album from bassist Barre Phillips – a set recorded right in the middle of his career, at a time when his sense of new ideas was non-stop and everflowing! This album features Barre on solo bass, but playing with tapes – at a level that sometimes seems to have him overdubbed on a second bass, but also improvising alongside other sounds that appear in the mix – very much with the spirit of a set of live duo or trio improvisations, although with Barre always at the center of attention! Titles include "Twist & Parry", "Covered", "Camouflage", "You & Me", "Around Again", and "No Exclusion". CD

Henrik SchwarzWorks Piano ... LP
Between Buttons, 2017. Near Mint- ... $7.99
You might know him from his production and remix work for the clubs – but here, Henrik Schwarz shows off a completely different side of his talents – his ear for beautifully personal, sensitive acoustic piano performance! As with Bugge Wesseltoft, another artist who started with beats, then got more acoustic – Schwarz has an amazing ear for space, sound, and timing – so that although he's just using piano here, he has a way of putting together notes that are very unique. At times, there's almost a Satie-like sense of space – but other points have the piano working with more longform sounds that flow together in these beautiful waves – almost Sky Records or experimental Eno territory. Titles include "Trappist", "Confirm Humanity", "4011 Liter", and "Where Are We Heading". LP, Vinyl record album

Bear Family (Germany), Late 30s/1940s/Early 50s. New Copy 9CDs & DVD ... $299.99 399.99
Seminal work by one of the first big figures in country music – the great Roy Acuff, whose early material was the second force putting the sound on the map after the work of Jimmie Rodgers! Roy was one of the greatest stars of the early years – a hell of a singer, an important composer, and a tireless performer who criss-crossed the south constantly – helping the music to spread and grow, and sparking countless careers along the way! This package is the first to really do justice to these important early years of Acuff – much more so than any of the public domain packages on the market – as the whole thing's handled with the Bear Family sense of completeness – which means that the 9CD box features a whopping 226 songs, recorded for the Vocalion, Arc, and Columbia labels between 1936 and 1951 – all packaged with a massive 184 page hardcover book, filled with new biography information, session notes, an a newly-done discography – plus a fantastic amount of rare photos and illustrations. The set also features a bonus DVD, which features the 1940 Grand Ole Opry film – which includes work by Acuff and Uncle Dave Macon. The set even includes a rare 1948 instrumental album by The Smokey Mountain Boys too! CD

Habibi Funk, 1973. New Copy ... $14.99 15.98
Monstrous funk from Morocco – unreleased material recorded in 1973, with a sound that should have revolutionized North Africa at the time! The group works here in a really raw blend of heavy percussion and riffing guitar – produced with lots of edge and echo, and delivered with the spirited vibe you'd expect from the ensemble's appearance on the cover! There's plenty of criss-crossing between the lead and chorus vocals on the set – but the guitar gets plenty of space too, and has this really sharp quality that's clearly informed by psych, but funkier overall – and very different than any work of the sort from farther down the continent. Drums are super-heavy, and the basslines match as well – on titles that include "Albaki", "Taali", "Chamaa", "Aflana", "Kaddaba", "Moulate Salef", and "Al Hadaoui". CD

A hardbop classic from Cannonball Adderley – and one of his harder to find albums from the Riverside days! The set has Cannon playing without his usual group, in the context of an all-star batch of players that includes Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers, and Jimmy Cobb – who he worked with in his time with Miles Davis – plus occasional guest rhythm work by Albert and Percy Heath. The set's strong and straight ahead – a good bridge between Cannon's early Mercury recordings, and his later albums for Riverside and Capitol – tightly crafted solos with a good deal of soul, Adderley holding down all the horn work on the record. Titles include "If This Isn't Love", "Serenata", "Poor Butterfly", "I Remember You", and "I've Told Ev'ry Little Star". CD also features 2 bonus alternate tracks! CD

AeraHumanum Est/Hand Und Fuss ... CD
Erlkonig/Long Hair (France), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $16.99 22.99
A pair of albums from Aera – an obscure German prog group who recorded on an equally obscure label during the 70s! Humanum Est is the group's first – and although the set has vocals, it's very occupied with some really unique interplay between guitars, saxes, bass, and drums – the first two of which are often used with this really unique sort of phrasing that really sets the album apart – these lines that are maybe leaner and crisper, but no less complex than work by some of the group's contemporaries – just pitched a different way. Titles include "Papa Doing", "Hodibbel", "Sechs Achtel", and "Jonas Schlaft". On Hand Und Fuss, Aera sound even sharper than on their debut – really reveling in that unique way of handling their instruments that set them apart from the rest – progressive, but also with a crisp sense of phrasing and individual space between both the instruments and the notes – which gives the whole thing these qualities that are hard to describe, but which come across especially well in the way the guitar and saxophone parts play together! As before, there are lyrics on the set, but they take second stage next to the instrumentation – on titles that include "Mecheluind", "Alabaster Keaton", "Ad Abscurdum", and "Kamele On". CD

Paramount/Esoteric (UK), 1970. New Copy 4CD ... $36.99 51.99
A massive set of work from Affinity – a group who only gave the world one classic album, but have a heck of a lot more to offer too! The set begins with the self-titled album from Affinity – a British rock combo, but one with a distinctly jazzy feel – one that's often quite funky at times too! The core instrumentation is heavy on keyboards and guitar, set over some tightly rhythm bass and drums – often moving with some hip jazzy changes in the mix, and a nice sense of space between the notes that really helps things groove. Vocals are by Linda Hoyle, who again has a bit of a jazz-based approach – almost like Norma Winstone or Julie Driscoll at times in the way she soars out majestically over the rhythms, but somewhat more lyrically oriented overall. Titles include "I Am & So Are You", "Night Flight", "Three Sisters", "Mr Joy", and "I Wonder If I Care As Much". CD2 continues the jazzy spirit, with a whole host of instrumentals showing some soul jazz roots of the group – as they take on "Jive Samba", "All Blues", "Fever", "Out Of The Storm", "Comin Home Baby", and "Mercy Mercy Mercy". CD3 features origins of the group, with 17 more tracks from 1965 to 1967 – including more jazz work too – and CD4 features 9 more tracks recorded after the classic album – including "Rio", "Sunshower", "Grey Skies", "Mora's Hand", "Sarah's Wardrobe", and "Highgate". Jasmine (UK), 1960. New Copy ... $14.99 15.99
A wonderful collection – one that features the legendary album by Eden Ahbez, plus other tracks that show his influence on postwar music! First up is the core Eden's Island set – an incredibly evocative record – one of the strangest of its kind, and an audio treasure that we've loved for years! Eden Ahbez first came into public prominence as the man who wrote "Nature Boy" for Nat King Cole – a dark, moody tune that was as mysterious and earthy as the man who wrote it! This album was recorded nearly a decade after Cole's original hit, and features Ahbez almost in Moondog-like territory – working in an amazing setting of odd instruments and exotic percussion – but also singing in this almost spiritualist kind of way! The record's got plenty of ties to the exotica scene of the late 50s – but also stand out from the pack with a mad vision that's all its own – a strange intersection of lines that one might draw between Moondog, Martin Denny, and Anton La Vey! Tracks include "The Wanderer", "Eden's Island", "Tradewind", "Full Moon", "Mongoose", "Market Place", "The Old Boat", "Island Girl" and "La Mar". CD then features 16 more bonus tracks – all compositions by Eden and work that shows others taking up his helm – titles that include "Palm Springs" by Ray Anthony, "Wine Women & Gold" by The Carsons, "Hey Jacque" by Eartha Kitt, "Frankie's Song" by Anita Ray, "Let Me Hear You Say I Love You" by Vicki Young, "End Of Desire" by April Stevens, "Sahara" by Bob Romeo & The Jungle Sextet, and "Song Of The Fool" by The Crew Cuts. LP, Vinyl record album

AirtoVirgin Land ... LP
Salvation, 1974. Very Good+ ... $14.99
A great little fusion set from Airto – recorded in a mode that's a great bridge between his acoustic roots and some of his smoother albums in years to come! The sound has some key electric elements here – bits of bass, guitar, and keyboards – but there's still a strongly acoustic sound overall too, one that leaves plenty of room for Airto's unique jams on percussion, plus a bit of vocals from the lovely Flora Purim. Airto's got some top-shelf talents helping him out here – Billy Cobham on production, and Stanley Clarke and Milcho Leviev on arrangements – and there's a nice sense of darkness going on that even separates the album from some of Airto's other mid 70s sides on CTI. Titles include "Peasant Dance", "Musikana", "Virgin Land", and "Hot Sand". LP, Vinyl record album

Airto/DeodatoFingers/Airto & Deodato In Concert (SACD multi-channel disc) ... CD
CTI/Vocalion (UK), 1973. New Copy ... $19.99 24.99
CTI Records meets that Brazilian fusion sound of the 70s – served up here on two classic albums! Fingers is one of Airto's greatest records ever – a really hard hitting batch of tracks that mix sharp-edged fusion lines with some earthier Brazilian percussion touches – all in a way that nicely steps off of Airto's first few American releases, and warms the groove up with a nice dose of California soul! Flora Purim joins in here on both vocals and percussion – and the rest of the group features Hugo Fattoruso on keyboards and harmonica, Jorgte Fattoruso on drums, and David Amaro on both electric and acoustic guitars – shifting nicely between both instruments in a way that further underscores the blended vibe of the record! Most of these tracks are Airto classics – like "Tombo in 7/4", "San Francisco River", "Romance Of Death", "Ringers", and "Wind Chant" – and the record has a very sweet CTI production style, but is still rough enough around the edges to keep things nice and real! Deodato In Concert is an excellent little live set from Deodato – hard to believe because the sound's just as tight and funky as his studio albums, and possibly even more interesting because he manages to pull it off equally well in a live setting! The record features percussion by Airto, guitar by John Tropea, and vocals by Flora Purim – and those are just the marquee names of a large and amazing grew of great musicians! All tracks are long and complicated, for very hynotic feel throughout. The funkiest number is "Tropea", which has a nice long 8 minute groove – and the set also features a cover of Steely Dan's "Do It Again", plus the tracks "Parana", "Branches", "Baubles, Bangles And Beads" and "Skyscraper". Amazing! CD

Atlantic, 1976. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
Jan Akkerman did plenty of unusual projects in the 70s, and this album may well be the best of them – an outing with vocalist Kaz Lux, whose unique phrasing really helps give the music a lot of focus! Akkerman's still hanging nicely between rock, funk, and jazz – but the use of vocals means that some of his guitar lines are a bit more spacious in ways that we really love, especially when they mix in these cool cosmic passages with the MPS-like keyboards of Jasper Van't Hof. The album's hardly a straight fusion album, but it's also not really a rock one either – more like a fusion set with vocals in all the right places – on titles that include "Guardian Angel", "Tranquilizer", "Can't Fake A Good Time", "Naked Actress", "Wings Of Strings", and "Strindberg". Flying Dutchman, 1972. Very Good Gatefold ... $19.99
Reedman Harold Alexander cut very few albums as a leader – and this is one of the best! You're likely to hear Alexander's work in the background on other sessions, but at the time of this record he was also a visionary leader – perfect for the open, freewheeling vibe allowed by the Flying Dutchman label – in kind of a fusion between earlier 60s soul jazz modes, and some of the spiritual currents of the time! Harold blows both flute and soprano sax here – on a set of long tracks that also feature lots of great work from Neal Creque on piano – himself another musician who only got a bit of time to shine in the spotlight around this time, after a great legacy with Pucho & The Latin Soul Brothers. Cornell Dupree also plays guitar on the album – which features just three nicely long tracks – the funky "Quick City Revisited", a sweet cover of "Watermelon Man", and a ten minute jamming take on "High Heel Sneakers". A really great trio set from drummer Barry Altschul – a record that easily swings between freer moments and straighter swing – thanks to the help of bassist Joe Fonda, and saxophonist Jon Irabagon – who blows tenor, soprillo sax, and alto clarinet! Fonda's bass may well be the rock of the set – a he's always a bit understated, but finds a way to bridge the space between Altschul's loose work on the kit, and the more soulfully cohesive lines of Irabagon's reeds. The tunes all have a loose structure, but are easily broken open by improvisation – and titles include "Be Out S'Cool", "Irina", "The 3Dom Factor", "Long Tall Sunshine", and "Martin's Stew". CD

Bell, 1972. Near Mint- ... $24.99
A really unique little record – soulful, folksy, and with a slight jazzy tinge at times – and the first solo album cut by one half of the Alzo & Udine Latin soul duet who recorded for Mercury in the late 60s! This solo album has a bit of a different flavor than Alzo's work with Udine, but the singing and instrumentation have a lot of nice jazzy changes – and the whole thing skips along with the same earthy, personal feel that made the earlier album so great. The whole thing's sort of in between Colin Blunstone and Nick Drake, but with a bit more of a soulful vibe – and an ultra-hip mix of styles that makes us wonder why Alzo wasn't hailed as the hippest thing going at the time. The guitars here are very full and present – not at a hit you over the head jamming label, but with this rich sonic element that has lots of bassy undercurrents – at a level that makes the album a head-nodding gem all the way through – poised perfectly between some of the more psyche styles of the African scene of the time, and some of the more thoughtful singer-songwriter material. Vampi Soul (Spain), 1964/1966. New Copy ... $5.99 16.99
An amazing little soundtrack – written in mid 60s Peru by jazz pianist Jaime Delgado Aparicio, but easily on a par with some of the best American or Italian scores from the time! The music's got a really wonderful feel throughout – jazz at the core, but with touches of spy soundtrack scoring and some of the lighter, more comedic modes of the Italian scene. Delgado uses a core combo with heavy piano, percussion, and some great trumpet and tenor – almost with the tightness of the Basso-Valdambrini group – but he also expands the sound with bits of strings and some fuller orchestrations, used to shade in some amazing colors that roll, dip, and turn with the beautiful grooves penned for the set. The whole thing's tremendous, with equally great production that creates some odd twists and turns that further keep things interesting as the album rolls on. Titles include "Elm Embajador Y Yo", "Sexy Surf", "Llegando A La Capital", "Isometria", "Todo El Mundo Me Persigue", "Lucha En El Mar", and "La Arana". Added to the soundtrack is Jamie's 1964 album – Jaime Delgado Aparicio Y Su Trio – a crackling bit of piano jazz from the Peruvian scene of the 60s – and a record that's somewhere between the best of Horace Silver on Blue Note, and some of the Brazilian bossa trios of the time! There's a strong sense of rhythm throughout – round, rolling basslines punctuated by great work on the drum kit – all topped by beautifully lyrical lines from Delgado Aparicio on piano – filled with color, light, and life throughout – and soloing with a depth that's rare for such a young player! Titles include a great version of Horace Silver's "Sayonara Blues", plus "The Climate", "Autumn Leaves", "Walkin", and "Blue Daniel". CD

The set is an amazing collaboration between trumpeter Don Cherry and pioneering electronic musician Jon Appleton – one of those rare meetings of the minds that goes far deeper than you'd expect! On the set, Cherry's trumpet, flute, and percussion is heavily processed by Appleton – often in ways that are organic enough to keep with Cherry's other experiments of the time, and with the "Human Music" title of the set – but sometimes with the more playful feel of Appleton's other music from the time. The mix of electronics and improvisation is amazing – years ahead of its time, and with a haunting sound that works perfectly against Cherry's style of restrained spiritualism. First up is the record Arrival from 1970 – a really wonderful record from this very cool UK group – a mix of gals and guys who harmonize together in a really great way – very different than a lineup like this might have sounded in the 60s, spun with a touch of the Hair generation, and almost like a blue-eyed version of The Fifth Dimension, working with a great blend of rock, pop, and soul! Albert AylerMusic Is The Healing Force Of The Universe ... CD
Impulse (Japan), 1969. New Copy ... $18.99
One of the last records made by avant sax legend Albert Ayler – a really mind-expanding album that's unlike anything else he ever did! By the time of the record, Ayler had made a full round trip between the New York and European jazz scenes – leaving important influences wherever he went, and trying desperately to pick up new ones the further he moved on. Here, he's working in a style that's a bit like that of Archie Shepp at the time – still steeped in free jazz and new thing ideals, but infused with a free-thinking approach to the music that allows for bold new styles and sounds. In addition to his own stunning work on tenor, Ayler's also blowing bagpipes and vocalizing a bit next to singer Mary Maria, who does a great recitation on one track of the record. Rhythm is by the two-bass team of Stafford James and Bill Folwell, next to drums by Muhammad Ali – and the whole thing's capped off by guitarist Henry Vestine, who plays in modes that range from bluesy to free. At the time, this one was kind of dismissed as a messed-up mistake that occurred at the end of Ayler's too-short life – but honestly, over the years, this record really really opens itself to us more and more, and we have to say that we think it's one of his most groundbreaking albums! Titles include "Island Harvest", "Drudgery", "Oh Love Of Life", "Masonic Inborn (part 1)", and "A Man Is Like A Tree". CD

Hat Art/Ezz-Thetics (Switzerland), 1964. New Copy 2CD ... $18.99
A huge 2CD set – one that features important European work that saxophonist Albert Ayler recorded with trumpeter Don Cherry! CD1 brings together six tracks from Albert Ayler's Hilversum Radio sessions from 1964 – plus an additional three tracks recorded in Denmark a few months earlier! The first six titles are a famous performance by a famous group set loose on a European tour in 1964 – Ayler on tenor, Don Cherry on cornet, Gary Peacock on bass, and Sunny Murry on drums – recorded in The Netherlands for a small audience in a Dutch radio studio! The setting is a wonderful one – a mix of the live freedoms that would really let Ayler stretch out – especially when playing overseas – but recorded with the clarity of some of his studio albums for ESP – that sharp-edged sound that really highlights the groundbreaking style of his playing! The rest of the group here is equally great, and Murray is completely freed up from rhythm at points, to fly beautifully with the rest – on titles that include "Angels", "CAC", "Infant Happiness", "Ghosts", and "No Name". The same group performs on the final three tracks – recorded in Copenhagen for Danish Radio, with an equally great level of clarity – on "Saints", "Spirits", and "Vibrations". The interplay between Ayler and Cherry is especially great – echoing the latter's material with Ornette Coleman, but with a different sort of edge! CD2 features amazing live material from 1964 – work that was recorded at the Club Montmartre in Copenhagen, right around the same time that Albert Ayler recorded his album for Debut Records – and a set that has his quartet in even more firey formation overall! The tracks are long, and Ayler is completely unbridled – at a level that really shows not only how much of a leader he was to the American avant underground, but what an inspiration he was to the European free scene too – who could only help but take a big cue from his work here on tenor! The group also features equally wonderful work from Don Cherry on cornet – sounding quite different than when with Ornette Coleman – plus bass from Gary Peacock, whose dark tones really set the mood – and drums from Sunny Murray, who is also at an explosive point in his career. The material is remastered wonderfully, with permission from Albert Ayler's estate – and titles include "Mothers", "Saints", "Vibrations", Spirits", "Children", and a shorter "Spirits". CD

An instant classic of spacey soul – and a brilliant full length set by Ayro! Ayro's been bubbling under for a few years running – hitting bit notes with his scattered singles and compilation tracks – and showing that Detroit is soon to be on top of the sound of 21st Century Soul! The sound here is somewhere on a loose line between 4Hero and Peven Everett – skittish in the beats and keys, with a funky future fusion approach that drives the groove – but also quite soulful on the vocal end of things, pushing a gospelly style of voice into the stratosphere explored by the instrumental grooves! Titles include "Drink", "Truth", "Is She Seeing Me", "Let This Love", "Burning Brightly", "Hope That Springs From A World Of Pain", and "Days To Come (Ayro mix)". CD

AzitaGlen Echo ... LP
Drag City, 2021. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $25.99
Wonderfully sweet work from Azita – a record that's light years away from the grittier no wave of her roots – and which shows a maturation and focus in her songwriting that really blows us away! The songs are wonderful – way more open than we might have guessed many years back – and there's this quality to the overall set that would have had Azita knocking older contemporaries like Liz Phair or Tracey Thorn on their ass – although, thankfully, the set will end up being a nice little secret between the few of us – and not the stuff of 90s indie rock power wars! Azita plays all instruments herself, the guitar with an especially lovely sort of jangle – and titles include "If U Die", "Our Baby", "Shooting Birds Out Of The Sky", "Don't", "Two Brutal Moving Parts", and "Online Life". Big Crown, 2021. New Copy ... $12.99 14.99
Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band always sound great – but this time around, they feel funkier than before, and maybe a bit more sinister too – a really great change that has us falling in love with the group all over again! There's still plenty of steel drums in the mix – used to craft the ringing sounds that really set the group apart from other funk groups – but this time around, the bass might be the star of the show – as it's got this really strong placement that creates a bad-stepping vibe for just about every track! Other instruments come into play at times – some horns, keyboards, and guitar – but the whole thing really feels like this love affair between the bass and the steel, urged on by some excellent funky work on the regular drums too. Titles include "Space", "Raise It Up", "Getting Nasty", "Blow Your Cover", "Les Fleurs", "Squaring The Circles", "My Jamaican Dub", "Tough Victory", and "Dirt Off Your Shoulder". CD

Chet BakerChet Baker Sings ... CD
Pacific Jazz, 1954. Used ... $6.99
Maybe one of the greatest albums of Chet Baker vocal material you could ever hope to buy – a fantastic testament of the young talent at the top of his game – effortlessly moving between well-conceived trumpet solos and those fantastic vocals that were unlike any other singer at the time! Half the album was recorded live, the other half in the studio, but there's a very unified vibe to the whole thing – and the great Russ Freeman plays piano on both tracks, and a bit of celeste at a few points too. Titles include "That Old Feeling", "Look For The Silver Lining", "There Will Be Another You", "I Fall In Love Too Easily", "My Buddy", "My Funny Valentine", and "I Get Along Without You Very Well". Every track is great, and these are the original vocal recordings that put Chet on the map! CD

Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1988. New Copy ... $13.99
Material from the last concert Chet Baker ever recorded – a surprisingly tight session that has the trumpeter blowing solos in front of the NDR Big Band. The setting is relatively relaxed – not a blasting big band session, but one that colors in the space between Baker's notes with gentle shades of sound – really respecting his role as a soloist, and providing just the right amount of gentle accompaniment to flesh out the sound of the set. Chet sings on 2 numbers – "My Funny Valentine" and "I Get Along Without You Very Well" – and other tracks include "Sippin At Bells", "Conception", "Look For The Silver Lining", and "Tenderly". Herb Geller also solos on 2 numbers too! CD

Sublime sound cues from BBC maestro John Baker – a wonderful blend of jazzy moments and weird electronic sounds – often used together at the same time! The feel here is as hip as the hippest Brit TV of the 60s – some very righteous grooves that would have made great records on their own – mixed with moodier moments that blend together all sorts of forward-thinking elements, at a level that was hardly being done on American TV at the time – easy shifts between timings and tones that keep the whole thing moving with an incredible degree of freshness throughout – with a sound that's way way different than any sort of other television work we can think of. Some tracks have improvised tenor or flute passages, often while other weird electric bits are taking place – and there's also lots of nice work on drums and percussion, which further gives the electronics a direction! Titles include tracks from Vendetta episodes "The Sugar Man", "The Dolly Man", "Suivez La Piste", "The Widow Man", "The Caves Of Steel", and "The Ice Cream Man". CD

Drummer Chad Taylor is one of the most versatile performers we know – a drummer who can move easily between a variety of different settings, always finding the right touch for the right moment! Yet here, Taylor may be in one of his most unique settings to date – improvising on two long duets with Rosa Barba – an artist and filmmaker, and a musician who combines her talents here by playing cello, but with a celluloid bow – literally making music with the texture of film, as she slowly bows her instrument on these long, spacious lines that are matched with equally careful, sonorous work from Taylor on the drums! Chad is much more sonic than rhythmic throughout – really sounding wonderful as he brings all these new colors to his palette – on the two long improvisations on the set. CD

Fantastic solo work from Peter Bardens – an artist who'd later gain fame as the lead singer of Camel, but who's even more fantastic here on his own – working in a trippy blend of modes that's equally balanced between prog and psych! Bardens plays organ on most of the tracks, but he uses the instrument in ways that are very different from the more R&B-inspired Hammond lines of the mod generation – often tightly fused with the sublime guitar of Andy Gee, a player who's got this sharp sound that's full of chromatic hues that really resonate with the keys of the organ – as the pair take off in this soaring groove that's occasionally a bit funky, always a bit trippy, and which gets a great kick from bass, drums, and percussion – plus support vocals from Linda Lewis and Steve Ellis. The album's really something special – great all the way through – and titles include "The Answer", "Homage To The God Of Light", "I Don't Want To Go Home", "I Can't Remember", "Let's Get It On", and "Don't Goof With A Spook". Bobby BareDetroit City & Other Hits/500 Miles From Home/Talk Me Some Sense/Bird Named Yesterday (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
RCA/BGO (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 19.99
Four gems from the early RCA years of Bobby Bare – plus bonus tracks too! First up is Detroit City – a classic early album from the great Bobby Bare – proof that the man had plenty of charms in the years before he started working with hip singer/songwriter material! The set kicks off with the huge title cut – a track that Bobby does better than just about anyone else – and it follows with a host of well-chosen cuts and some surprisingly great originals – showing an early songwriting side of Bare that didn't always get exposure in later years! Bobby's got a great edge in his vocals, even young – less of the pop modes that you'd hear on some of his singles – on titles that include "Shame On Me", "Detroit City", "Is It Wrong", "Dear Wastebasket", "The Gods Were Angry With Me", "Book Of Love", and "I Don't Believe I'll Fall In Love Today". 500 Miles is early genius from Bobby Bare – a set that shows just how great he was at the start – able to bring a special spin to a country tune, even amidst some of the fuller Chet Atkins production at RCA! Bobby's got a very unique style – maybe more urban than you might expect, but still with a twang – a quality that always made him perfect for songs of moving and longing, as in the title cut. There's plenty of other numbers in that mode, too – including a few penned by Bobby himself – in a lineup that includes "Let Me Tell You about Mary", "Abilene", "Worried Man Blues", "Sailor Man", "Homestead On The Farm", "Gotta Travel On", "500 Miles From Home", and "I Wonder Where You Are Tonight". Talk Me Some Sense is wonderful work from Bobby Bare – a record that already shows the young singer reaching for hip material, and coming up with a mature way of putting over a tune that's unlike anyone else! There's some slight currents of folk in the music – but as with the early John Hartford records on RCA, the style is more country overall – but also in a very different space too – inheriting some of the hipper inflections of the changing 60s, even amidst familiar RCA production – which puts a really special spin on all the tunes. Titles include "A Little Bit Later On Down The Line", "Got Leavin On Her Mind", "Long Black Veil", "All The Good Times Are Past & Gone", "You Can't Stop The Wind From Blowing", "Heaven Help My Soul", "It Ain't Me Babe", and the great original "Passin Through". Bird Named Yesterday is one of the coolest Bobby Bare albums of the 60s – a precursor to some of his concept albums of the 70s, but done in a bit of a different mode too! Bobby delivers these little recitations between most of the tunes – speaking in different characters, but in a way that evokes some of the larger spirit that Lee Hazlewood brought to his projects of the period – a quality that's also echoed in the way that Bare puts over a tune – mature, and with a nice sense of distance that brings about a slight current of wit – quite unusual for RCA country at the time! The set includes some great tunes by a young Jack Clement – and titles include "Somebody Bought My Old Hometown", "The Air Conditioner Song", "The Day The Saw Mill Closed Down", "Bird Named Yesterday", "The Old Gang's Gone", and "They Covered Up The Old Swimmin Hole". Bonus tracks include "The Town That Broke My Heart", "Don't Do Like I Done Son", "Sandy's Crying Again", and "When Am I Ever Gonna Settle Down". CD

Wonderful work from Barrabas – a hip Spanish group of the 70s who effortlessly blend together elements of funk, rock, and soul – at a level that made them surprisingly big on this side of the Atlantic too! Maybe part of the strength of their fame was that over here, the group were never pictured on the cover – so they fit right in the record racks with other funk records of the time – as they serve up a wild safari of grooves that's almost in a sort of party mode, with the band jamming on congas, organ, and guitars! The vocals trade back nicely between the lead singer and the ensemble in a soulful mode that shows that everyone was paying attention – and the best tracks have a tight groove with choppy guitar and driving conga, almost in an LA Chicano funk mode. Numero, Early 70s. New Copy 5CD ... $35.99 41.99
A tremendous package of work from this overlooked soul and gospel legend – four classic albums, plus other rare material too – all packaged with detailed notes in the wonderful Numero Group style! First up is Like A Ship Without A Sail – a gospel album from Pastor TL Barrett, but one that's gone on to legendary status among funk and soul collectors over the years! Barrett works here with his Youth For Christ Choir – a south side ensemble that's filled with genuine spirit and passion, aimed towards lofty ideals – but set up with some deep secular soul production touches and instrumentation that keep things razor sharp throughout! The album was supervised by Chess Records sax player and arranger Gene Barge – with other Chess players Richard Evans and Phil Upchurch on the sessions too – and the music is filled with raw drums, heavy bass, and lots of great organ lines! Next is Do Not Pass Me By Vol 1 – an album that's got a nice balance between intimate soul numbers and larger tracks that have the whole Mount Zion Baptist Church along for support! The set's definitely got the strongly soulful vibe of Barrett's Like A Ship album – a strong ear for the best secular elements of the time, which are used liberally in the instrumental backing – to really send home the message in the music! Most tunes really soft-pedal the religion, and instead go for an overall feel that really crosses over to regular soul music. Next is the great second volume of Do Not Pass Me By – like the first, the product of a wonderfully spiritual setting on Chicago's south side – music created in the church, but with all the same vibe as the hippest secular soul coming from the Windy City in the early 70s! The set does a great job of alternating strong lead singers with the rest of the group – a bit like Voices Of East Harlem, but with more of a larger ensemble feel – and there's some really wonderful moments on the record throughout – even a bit of funk amidst the more righteous soul-styled tunes. I Found The Answer is one of the biggest-circulating albums from this fantastic figure in Chicago gospel – a unique set done for the Gospel Truth subsidiary of Stax Records, but a set served up in the same blend of soul-based inspirations as some of TL Barrett's indie label releases back home in the Windy City! Plus, the package features a full album of Singles & Sermons – rare non-LP material by this seminal figure in both soul and spiritual music. CD

One of THE seminal Basie albums of all time – and a masterful pairing between the Count and arranger Neal Hefti! Hefti has an amazing ear for the Basie groove, and he works here to re-fit the overall sound of the group with a tighter, more fluid approach – one that ensured that they'd be alive and booming well into the 60s. The Hefti touch is one that's slightly lighter than the Basie of before – one that assumes the bump at the bottom, but never overdoes it – and instead almost uses the sound of no sound at all to carry the rhythm – while the horns at the top of the group are vamping around in these majestic charts that break out into fantastically searing solos. This tasty set was cut for the tiny Rojac label in between Maybelle's earlier years at Savoy and later albums on Brunswick – and it's got a swinging, 60s mod sort of style that's pretty darn groovy, baby! The arrangements are by Bob Gallo, and most of the tracks are 60s pop and soul standards – but Maybelle sings them with a gusty, sincere style – and brings a really great approach to the album – almost giving it the feel of some of the best Tangerine label albums from the decade. Titles include "Eggplant That Ate Chicago", "I Can't Control Myself", "Coming On Strong", "Mellow Yellow", "96 Tears", "Eleanor Rigby", and "Black Is Black". Kind of nutty, but it kind of works! CD
(In a very cool Japanese-styled, LP-like cardboard sleeve cover!)

Edwin BirdsongDance Of Survival ... LP
Bamboo, 1975. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
Tripped out funky soul from the great Edwin Birdsong – a rare indie album released between his years at Polydor and Philly International! The set's got a wilder sound than any of his other work – kind of a righteous funk set for the dancefloor – recorded with lots of weird production touches, edgey guitar bits, and a style that's almost psychedelic-folk-jazz-disco! Birdsong's lyrics are more "out there" than ever, and there's some great spacey production that really makes the whole thing sound great – and which gives the record a very cool feel that's unlike anything else we can think of. A real lost treasure from the 70s indie underground – with titles that include "Dance Of Survival", "What's Your Sign", "Night Of The Full Moon", "Astral Walk", and "Your Smile Gave Birth To My Idea". Black CrowesShake Your Money Maker ... CD
American, 1990. Used ... $2.99
The dawn of the 90s debut of the Black Crowes! This is a record that really stood out at the time, a strange period in mainstream rock between the hard rock/hair metal of the late 80s and the moodier alternative rock to come – and here was the Crowes, carrying a torch for the old school swagger of the Rolling Stones and especially the Faces – and doing a pretty damn convincing job! Includes "Twice As Hard", "Jealous Again", "She Talks To Angels", "Struttin' Blues", "Stare It Cold", "Hard To Handle" and more. CD

Soulful sounds from Black Pumas – a collaboration between singer Eric Burton and the great Adrian Quesada – the latter an instrumentalist and producer that you'll know from a variety of different funky projects over the years! This set might well be Adrian's ticket to the big time – as Burton's a singer with a very strong range, and great crossover potential – echoing Al Green one minute, hitting deeper vibes the next – and working alongside small combo backing that has plenty of laidback guitar lines and warm keyboards, all produced with the usual Quesada touch! Titles include "Oct 33", "Fire", "Colors", "Know You Better", "Stay Gold", "Old Man", "Confines", and "Touch The Sky". CD

Ed BlackwellWhat It Be Like? – Ed Blackwell Project Vol 2 ... CD
Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1992. New Copy ... $16.99
One of the last recordings made by Ed Blackwell before his early passing in 1992 – an Oakland live date recorded with an excellent lineup that includes Graham Haynes on cornet, Carlos Ward on alto and flute, Mark Helias on bass, and a bit of guest trumpet from Don Cherry! The style here is earthy and organic – never overly modern, and building in a way that echoes Blackwell's angular roots, but transforms that sound into more spiritually exploratory lines. Ward's work is especially great, and the absence of a piano means that the interplay between cornet and sax is the main driving force of most tunes. Titles include "Nebula", "Grandma's Shoes", "Pentahouse", "First Love", and the extended "Lito" suite in 3 parts. CD

One of the last recordings made by Ed Blackwell before his early passing in 1992 – an Oakland live date recorded with an excellent lineup that includes Graham Haynes on cornet, Carlos Ward on alto and flute, and Mark Helias on bass – working without any piano, at a level that maybe echoes some of Ed's earlier work with Ornette Coleman, but with a voice that's completely his own. ✨✧ Mary J BligeGrowing Pains ... CD
Geffen, 2007. Used ... Just Sold Out!
The grand dame of hip hop soul returns – and it's hardly a growing effort, it's got some of her best work of the decade! Growing Pains is a restless set of tracks that roll from hard hitting funky soul, to laidback sophisticated jams – working with a number of producers who are all fully committed to serving her best vocal traits. We'll admit we're a bit biased towards the heavyhitters over the romantic jams, but she's really a master of both styles, and everything in between! Her voice has never sounded better – and the titles include the launching pad single "Work That", the killer "Grown Woman" with Ludacris, "Just Fine", "Feel Like A Woman", "Just Fine", "Stay Down", "Hurt Again", "Shake Down" with Usher, "Till The Morning", "Roses", "Fade Away", "Talk To Me", "Smoke", "Come To Me (Peace)" and more. BlundettoGood Good Things ... CD
Heavenly Sweetness (France), 2020. New Copy ... $7.99
The title might seem familiar – given that Blundetto's first album was called Bad Bad Things – but this record really shows a strong evolution of his sound over the ten years since that release – the shifting sense of sound between hip hop, global roots, and more dynamic elements – sounding even better here than on any previous records! Blundetto works with production help from Blackjoy – in a mode that might have been born in hip hop studio techniques, but which here has much more of a French post-colonial vibe – wrapping together different global elements, soulful expressions, and jazzy flourishes with effortless ease – into a style that's completely his own overall. Titles include "Fly High", "Pais Azucar", "Barcelona", "Sunday In The Club", "Feel The Cold", "Bingi", "Menina Mulher Da Pele Preta", "Antiguas", and "Mo'Dinero". CD

Cobra/WRWTFWW (Switzerland), 1977. New Copy ... $15.99
A really cool little set that's maybe a bit jazz, and a bit "something else" – instrumental sounds from keyboardist Roland Bocquet, who you might know from his work in the group Catharsis – served up here with all sorts of cool elements that move between jazz fusion, spacey keyboard instrumentals, and other underground modes on the 70s French scene! At times, there's a lyricism that almost feels soundtrack-like, and at others, the songs are maybe more tuneful in sort of a sound library style – heavy on acoustic and electric keys from Roland, but featuring some guest instrumentation as well. Titles include "La Suite D'Elsa", "Djerba", "Exotique", "Bee Flat", "L'Allumette", "Fete", and "Paradia". CD
