✨✧ Art HodesI Remember Bessie – Art Hodes Plays Bessie Smith & Ma Rainey ... LP
Euphonic, 1977. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Art Hodes remembers Bessie Smith – but in a stripped-down mode that's definitely all his own! The set's one of Art's great solo outings for the Euphonic label – cut in the mid 70s, in a very respectful way that allows plenty of space for his magnificent sense of tone and timing – one of the few vintage players who could still sparkle this well at the time. Titles include "Yonder Comes The Blues", "Back Water Blues", "At A Georgia Camp Meeting", "You've Been A Good Ole Wagon", and "You've Got To Give Me Some". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ LaVern BakerLaVern Baker Sings Bessie Smith ... LP
Atlantic, 1958. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Bessie Smith by LaVern Baker – a great blend of modes that really comes off great! Instead of sounding like a throwback blues album, the set comes across with a nice degree of contemporary class – thanks in part to a jazzy presentation that's a bit different than some of Baker's other music of the time – and which sports reeds from Sahib Shihab, tenor from Paul Quinichette, trumpet from Buck Clayton, and trombone from Jimmy Cleveland! Baker's voice is in fine form in this comfortable setting – and really works magic with tracks that include "After You've Gone", "Preaching The Blues", "Empty Bed Blues", "Back Water Blues", and "Gimme A Pigfoot". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ LaVern BakerPrecious Memories/LaVern Baker Sings Bessie Smith ... CD
Atlantic/Collectables, 1958/1959. Used ... Out Of Stock
Atlantic's great early soul singer delivers 2 sides of fairly traditional material – both in her own gutsy R&B style. Precious Memories features LaVern singing 12 gospel tunes like "Didn't It Rain", "Too Close", "Without A God", "Touch Me, Lord Jesus", and "Journey To The Sky". LaVern's fine, but the real treat is the backing by Alex Bradford and his singers, one of the most soulful gospel groups of the late 50s! The next set of 12 tracks are all older Bessie Smith numbers – performed with small group backing that includes Sahib Shihab, Paul Quinichette, Buck Clayton, and Jimmy Cleveland. LaVern's versions are a bit jazzier than Bessie's – and titles include "After You've Gone", "preaching The Blues", "Empty Bed Blues", "Back Water Blues", and "Gimme A Pigfoot". CD

Jimmy RushingJimmy Rushing & The Smith Girls – Bessie, Clara, Mamie, & Trixie – And The Songs They Made Famous ... LP
Columbia, 1961. Sealed ... $5.99
Jimmy Rushing reprises a nice batch of blues classics from the 20s, all of which were sung by early recording artists like Bessie or Clara Smith. The group that backs him is a nice one, and features Buck Clayton on trumpet, Buster Bailey on clarinet, and Coleman Hawkins on tenor. As with many of Columbia's late 50's sessions in this style, the sound is excellent, and has an intimacy and warmth that works extremely well with the material – including titles like "Arkansas Blues", "Gulf Coast Blues", "Muddy Waters", "Squeeze Me", and "Crazy Blues". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mid 80s Spanish Fresh Sound pressing, still sealed with price sticker remnants.)

✨✧ Jimmy SmithBack At The Chicken Shack ... LP
Blue Note, 1960. Near Mint- ... $11.99
A partner album of sorts to Jimmy Smith's classic Midnight Special album – recorded during the same sessions as that one, and also featuring Stanley Turrentine on tenor and Kenny Burrell on guitar! The sound here is almost even more open and stretched out – with only 4 long tracks on the album, 2 on each side – all offering up plenty of room for Jimmy to hit the Hammond with that keenly imaginative approach to a solo he was showing at this time – a style that proved that the instrument could do a lot more than just make weird noises or pump up the rhythm. Turrentine's tenor more than matches Jimmy's solos for imagination – and titles include "When I Grow Too Old To Dream", "Messy Bessie", "Minor Chant", and "Back At The Chicken Shack". LP, Vinyl record album
(180 gram pressing – part of the Blue Note Classic Vinyl series.)

Lonnie Smith/John AbercrombieAfro Blue ... CD
Music Masters, 1993. Used ... $17.99
That's Dr Lonnie Smith, to you – grooving greatly here on one of those sweet mid 90s sessions that really returned his organ talents to the jazz-buying public! The group on the date is co-led with guitarist John Abercrombie – a player whose work has graced soul jazz sets over the years, but who's also best known for the airier tones of his ECM recordings – tones that sometimes surface here, but which are then quickly turned into the more focused sounds needed to match Smith's clean lines on the Hammond! There's no bassist at all on the date – Lonnie handles most of that with the organ – drums are by Marvin Smitty Smith. Titles include "Impressions", "Greensleeves", "Afro Blue", and "Bessie's Blues" – all tributes to Coltrane, natch! CD

Archie SheppLover Man (180 gram pressing with bonus tracks) ... LP
Timeless/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1988. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $39.99 44.99
A real gem from the great Archie Shepp – an overlooked treasure from his years as a straight jazz musician – a time we come to appreciate more and more as the years go by! The Shepp heard here is one who's still got all the raw tone and bite of the old days, but also finds a way to swing things on a set of familiar standards – so that he's cutting these great raspy lines out of tunes you might already know – but which are taking on a whole new life in the process. The small combo also features Dave Burrell on piano – another player who could go out, but instead here hangs inside, yet uses all the knowledge of his reach to keep things interesting. A few of the tracks feature vocals from Anne Lowman – with Shepp alongside on tenor – and the rest of the group features Herman Wright on bass and Steve McCraven on drums. Titles include "Brandnew World/Breaking A New Day", "My Funny Valentine", "Stars Are In Your Eyes", "Lush Life", and "Yesterdays". Expanded edition includes the bonus tracks "Margy Pargy" and Tribute To Bessie Smith". LP, Vinyl record album
