✨✧ Elmer Bernstein/Shorty Rogers & His GiantsMan With The Golden Arm – Original Soundtrack ... LP
Decca, 1955. Very Good ... $7.99
One of the greatest jazz soundtracks of all time! Elmer Bernstein wrote the score to Otto Preminger's chilling film version of Nelson Algren's book The Man With The Golden Arm – a sad tale of jazz, gambling, and heroin addiction on the streets of Chicago (not far from Dusty Groove, in fact!) – and in doing so, he came up with one of the first jazz soundtracks to really work strongly with a dramatic narrative. The film's striking theme is played in a number of variations, either with orchestral backing, or in small combo format by Shorty Rogers & His Giants, a crack west coast group that features work by Bud Shank, Shelly Manne, Bob Cooper, and Pete Candoli. The tracks work perfectly together as a suite of tracks, even without the images of the film – telling a tale of temptation, sadness, tragedy, and rebirth. Titles include "Clark Street", "Breakup", "The Fix", "Zosh", "Frankie Machine", and "Audition". Worth the price for the Saul Bass cover alone! LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono black label Decca pressing with deep groove. Cover has light aging.)

Peter BernsteinWhat Comes Next ... CD
Smoke Sessions, 2020. New Copy ... $13.99 17.98
Guitarist Peter Bernstein is standing on an empty New York street on the cover – a good indication of the June 2020 date on which the material was recorded – a moment that also seems to come through in the music as well! Bernstein's still got all those wonderful colors we love in his work on guitar, but there's also maybe some deeper feelings that come through too – perhaps out of speculation from the months spent sheltering in place before Peter journeyed to the studio to cut this set – working with a strong quartet that features Sullivan Fortner on piano, Peter Washington on bass, and Joe Farnsworth on drums. Farnsworth is nicely restrained at times – very much letting Washington shape the tunes alongside Bernstein's strings – and titles include the originals "Blood Wolf Moon Blues", "Simple As That", "What Comes Next", "Empty Streets", and "Harbor No Illusions" – plus a nice take on "Con Alma". Clifton AndersonBeen Down This Road Before ... CD
Ropeadope, 2020. New Copy ... $9.99 15.99
Trombonist Clifton Anderson always makes us wait way too long between his albums as a leader – but each of his sets is definitely worth the anticipation, and seems to push Clifton's music forward a fair bit more than before! This album's a gem through and through – all original music, save one Bacharach tune – played with a core group that includes Stephen Scott on piano, Buster Williams on bass and either Ronnie Burrage or Al Foster on drums – but open to a shifting array of players who include Peter Bernstein on guitar, Antoine Roney on soprano and tenor, Rene McLean on tenor, and Victor See Yuen on percussion – players who open things up past Anderson's already-great phrasing on the trombone, which is especially striking on a few tunes that feature some less conventional instrumentation. Titles include "Nana D", "Mission Statement", "TUBC", "Sista Gemini", "Sonny Says", "Been Down This Road Before", and "Mysticancients". CD

CowsillsWe Can Fly ... LP
MGM, 1967. Very Good ... $6.99
Brilliantly sparkling pop from The Cowsills – baroquely breezy and Sunshiney wonderful! This gem of a late 60s set has the group really moving away from their folksy roots – working with larger arrangements from Artie Schroeck, Herb Bernstein, and Charlie Calello that blend strings and grooves wonderfully together – in a way that has the tunes soaring high on slightly trippy grooves, pulling the fantastic vocals of the group along for the ride. Songs are playfully wonderful – filled with joy, but also sporting a nicely dark undercurrent – and titles include "We Can Fly", "Gray Sunny Day", "Heaven Held", "Gotta Get Away From It All", "What Is Happy Baby", "I Need A Friend", and "Yesterday's Girl". Norma TanegaWalkin' My Cat Named Dog (with bonus tracks) ... CD
New Voice/Real Gone, 1966. New Copy ... $15.99 16.99
A really unique record from Norma Tanega – a singer with roots in folk, but who works here in a mode that's very much her own! Norma sings and plays acoustic guitar as pictured on the cover – but the song styles and production are often very different than you might expect – slightly psychedelic at times, especially on the more love-oriented lyrics – and given some unusual arrangements by Herb Bernstein, working here under Bob Crew – who uses subtle elements to expand things around the edges, without getting in Tanega's way – so that there's a trippy quality to the songs that really fits the naivete of the lyrics. Titles include "You're Dead", "Walkin My Cat Named Dog", "A Street That Rhymes At 6am", "I'm Dreamin A Dream", "What Are We Craving", "No Stranger Am I", and "Hey Girl". CD also features the bonus tracks "Bread" and "Run On The Run". CD

VariousFrench New Wave (Et Dieu Crea La Femme/Un Temoin Dans La Ville/Jazz Sur Seine/Eva/Jules Et Jim/Tires Sur Le Pianiste/Le Meprise/A Bout De Souffle) (5CD set) ... CD
DOL (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 5CD ... $12.99 17.99
5CDs' worth of great music from the Nouvelle Vague – the French New Wave of Cinema that emerged at the end of the 50s – and which often featured a fair bit of jazz in the mix for its soundtracks! CD1 features the Paul Misraki score for Et Dieu Crea La Femme – And God Created Woman – an early Brigitte Bardot film directed by Roger Vadim, full of jazzy numbers by Misraki, presented here without the Bardot narration on other versions of the soundtrack. The CD features 23 tracks in all – with bonus material too! CD2 features great work from tenorist Barney Wilen – his full soundtrack to the film Un Temoin Dans La Ville, plus his own jazz album Jazz Sur Seine! CD3 features the Michel Legrand music for Eva – a perfect blend of Legrand's earlier straighter jazz work, with some of his later talent for groovy orchestrations. The overall feel is quite dark – with the kind of jazz-based soundscapes that were showing up in some other French soundtracks at the time, and sweet little noirish feel. CD4 features three scores by Georges Delerue – all for films directed by Francois Truffaut – Jules Et Jim, Tires Sur Le Pianiste, and Le Mepris – all sounding great together. CD5 features Martial Solal's score for A Bout De Souffle – a film best known as Breathless around the world, and an early movie by Jean Luc Godard that perhaps gave Martial Solal his biggest early global exposure! Solal's sharp, modern tones on the piano are very firmly in place here – but there's also lots of more dynamic jazz instrumentation too – of the sort that rivals other French new wave soundtracks by artists like Miles Davis, Barney Wilen, or Art Blakey. Yet Solal, like Godard, is perhaps a bit more sophisticated in his musical approach – and often breaks out into these little paintings in jazz, a bit like some of Elmer Bernstein on our favorite jazzy late 50s soundtracks. ✨✧ VariousUltra Lounge Vol 7 – The Crime Scene ... CD
Capitol, Late 50s/1960s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An ultra-cool set that focuses on one of our favorite easy genres ever – crime jazz! Crime jazz first came to light at the end of the 50s, as Mancini, Morrow, and others penned some incredible music for TV detective shows – tight, jazz-based tunes that really moved past the flowery style of orchestrations that had often been used in the movies and on other crime programs. The crime jazz mode was an instant hit with listeners, and many tunes climbed up the charts – and spawned countless albums of music in the mode. This set brings together 18 tracks from the 50s and 60s – including titles from a wide variety of sources inspired by the crime jazz sound, including a few more famous artists doing their take on the style! Titles include "The Untouchables" by Nelson Riddle, "Dragnet/Room 43" by Ray Anthony, "Thinking Of Baby" by Elmer Bernstein, "I Spy" by Earl Hagen, "Walk On The Wild Side" by Si Zentner, "The Silencers" by Vikki Carr, "Music To Be Murdered By" by Jeff Alexander with Alfred Hitchcock, "Harlem Nocturne" by Spike Jones, and "Mission Impossible" by Billy May. Drummer Jimmy Cobb has been in many great groups over the decade – and here, he's leading one of his own – a rock-solid quartet that features piano from Harold Mabern, bass from John Webber, and some especially nice guitar from Peter Bernstein! Bernstein's voice is right out front on most tracks – taking the lead, and getting some great solo space too – with a strong tone that really rings out, and which is matched by always-great work from Harold Mabern – a player who's been around as long as Cobb, and who just keeps knocking us out with excellent music over the years. Titles include Mabern's original "Edward Lee", the Bernstein tune "Blood Wolf Mon Blues", and versions of "Full House", "Yesterdays", "This I Dig Of You", "My Old Flame", and "Cheese Cake". CD

✨✧ Quincy DavisQ Vision ... CD
Qtime, 2021. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Drummer Quincy Davis has a very visionary approach here – music that makes a bold statement for his role as a leader, as Davis works here with three different groups on a strong set of original material! The mix of players is wonderful – shading in and adding voice to Quincy's music in different ways – sometimes with a septet that includes Philip Dizack on trumpet, Myron Walden on alto, Peter Bernstein on guitar, and JD Allen on tenor – other times with a quintet that has the great Warren Wolf on vibes and Dayna Stephens on tenor. There's also two trio tracks – with excellent piano from Xavier Davis and bass from Ugonna Okegwo – and in the other groups, Adam Birnbaum handles piano, with either Richie Goods or Vicente Archer on bass. Davis has this great way of blending darkness and light in his compositions, in a style that's echoed strongly by the soloists – on titles that include "Shorter Days", "Nat Turner", "Lost In Thought", "The Creeper", "Outbreak", and "Slippery Slope". ✨✧ Roswell RuddTrombone For Lovers ... CD
Sunnyside, 2013. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the most compelling albums we've ever heard from trombonist Roswell Rudd – and a record that shows that he's still got a hell of a lot to offer us after all these years! The title and cover seem like a bit of a joke, especially given Rudd's roots in the avant garde – yet the album's actually not far from what it promises – a set of ballads and love tunes, played by Roswell with this really weird, unusual approach – one that's as equally sentimental as it is filled with wit! Rudd shows these amazing tones in his horn – trombone elements that go back to Tyree Glenn, Juan Tizol, Lawrence Brown, and others he's never referenced this strongly – often acting as a "voice" on familiar tunes, especially the numbers that don't feature any vocals. Steven Bernstein joins on slide trumpet on a few great tracks – and other guests include John Medeski on organ, Michael Doucet on violin, and Bob Dorough on vocals – plus the NYC Labor Chorus on a few especially memorable tracks. Titles include the long Joe Hill" suite, plus "Come Sunday", "Baby It's Cold Outside", "Ghost Riders In The Sky", "Sleepwalk", "Here There & Everywhere", "Green Onions", and "Trouble In Mind". CD
