Benny SingsCity Pop ... CD
Stones Throw, 2019. New Copy ... $8.99 9.99
We've loved the music of Benny Sings for years – and can't understand why the man's not a much bigger success at a worldwide level – because his songs have the gentle soul and careful construction of the sorts of music that used to grace the airwaves decades back! Yet maybe the obscurity is always what makes Benny so great – as the songs here feel like lost AOR gems from a time when folks really knew how to make a record – but also sifted down to a core approach that never lets things get too overly-polished or commercial – kind of that modern love of classic modes that we also find in the music of Ed Motta, even though Ed's a very different singer overall. Titles include "Familiar", "Not Enough", "Duplicate", "Dreamin", "Summerlude", "Everything I Know", and "Nakameguro". CD

✨✧ Keely SmithSings The John Lennon/Paul McCartney Songbook ... LP
Reprise, 1964. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A groovy singer takes on the music of The Beatles – all with a sound that does a heck of a lot for both parties involved in the proceedings! Keely Smith was well into her solo career by the time of this set – having stepped away from Louis Prima, and soaring through some great albums on her own in the early 60s – of which this gem might be the capper! 1964 is a pretty early point to recognize the great potential of the songwriting team of Paul McCartney and John Lennon – but chalk that up to producer Jimmy Bowen, who does a superb job of bringing in some of the groovier styles that Reprise Records was getting hip to at the time – served up here courtesy of arrangers Ernie Freeman and Benny Carter. Both Freeman and Carter have a slight current of soul at times, which makes for a great match with Keely's vocals – on titles that include "Please Please Me", "This Girl", "If I Fell", "She Loves You", "World Without Love", "Hard Day's Night", "Do You Want To Know A Secret", "I Want To Hold Your Hand", and "Can't Buy Me Love" – all sounding surprisingly great as jazz tunes! Cesar AscarrunzCesar 830 ... LP
Flying Dutchman, 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $11.99
Lost Latin funk from the Bay Area scene of the 70s – and an album that may well blow away better-known work by groups like Malo, Azteca, or El Chicano! The album's near-perfect right from the start – and brings in plenty of New York elements to the groove, thanks to the inclusion of a heady amount of jazz alongside the soul, Latin, and funk elements in the grooves! The legendary Teo Macero produced and arranged – and really takes a lot of care in the studio to focus the overall energy of the tremendous talents on the record – players who include Hadley Caliman on flute and tenor, Steve Marcus on soprano sax, Benny Velarde on timbales, and Francisco Aguabella on congas – plus the trio of Cesar, Mark Levine, and Merl Sanders on keyboards. Most numbers have this really full, flowing groove – jazzy, but with a strong emphasis on the rhythms – and often touched with some great work on guitar that echoes the Santana-inspired sound of the generation, yet never in a rock way at all. Linda Tillery sings vocals on a few numbers, but the main focus is definitely instrumental – and the whole album's great – with cuts that include "See Saw Affair", "Azucar", "Descarga", "The Devil & Montezuma", "Gotta Get Away", and "Bridges". Harold Mabern with Gregory Porter & Kurt EllingAfro Blue ... CD
Smoke Sessions, 2015. New Copy ... $15.99 17.99
The great Harold Mabern kicks it hard with a key core group – then finds a way to open up with some surprise guest artists as well – including singers Gregory Porter, Kurt Elling, Jane Monheit, and Norah Jones! The core of the album features Mabern's piano rocketing out with rhythm from John Webber on bass and Joe Farnsworth on drums – and getting some strong tenor work from the mighty Eric Alexander – and as the set goes on, the group also brings in Jeremy Pelt on trumpet, Peter Bernstein on guitar, and Steve Turre on trombone. But the key force here is the singers – especially Porter and Elling, who seem to find an old school space with the group that really takes them back to their roots. Elling sings on "You Needed Me", "Portrait Of Jennie", and "Billie's Bounce"'; Porter sings on "Afro Blue" and "The Man From Hyde Park"; Monheit sings on "I'll Take Romance" and "My One & Only Love"; and Norah Jones sings on "Don't Misunderstand" and "Fools Rush In". CD also features Alexis Cole on "Such Is Life" – and the instrumental tracks "The Chief", "Mozzin", and "Bobby Benny Jymie Lee Bu". CD

Tuxedo (Mayer Hawthorne & Jake One)Tuxedo III ... Cassette
Funk On Sight, 2019. New Copy ... $10.99 11.98
There's a sticker on the cover that proclaims "third time's the charm" – and while that might be the case, we've also got to admit that we've always been pretty well charmed by Tuxedo – a great outlet for the soulful talents of Mayer Hawthorne, as he teams up with Jake One! As on previous records, the groove here is very firmly rooted in the 80s – lots of electro touches, plenty of sweet keys, and a mix of sung and electronic vocals – all processed together in a nice lean style! Well-chosen guests include MF Doom, Dam Funk, Benny Sings, and Gavin Turek – and titles include "You & Me", "The Tuxedo Way", "Gabriel's Groove", "Dreaming In The Daytime", "Vibrations", "If U Want It", "On a Good One", "Extra Texture", and "Toast 2 Us". ✨✧ Don Reno & Red SmileySweethearts In Heaven – The Complete Dot Recordings 1957 to 1964 ... CD
Dot/Bear Family (Germany), 1957/1964. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An overlooked chapter in the career of Don Reno & Red Smiley – two artists who were a key part of the King Records hillbilly catalog during the postwar years – heard here in a fantastic second string of material recorded for Dot Records! Dot's mostly known as a pop label, but the company also employed the great bluegrass singer Mac Wiseman as its A&R head in the 50s – and Mac does a fantastic job here to ensure that Reno & Smiley retain all the great instrumental and vocal elements that made their King material so great – and just provides them with better recording quality overall. The set really features two great slices of work – 1957 sessions produced by Wiseman, who also sings a bit in the background – with mandolin from Hank Garland and fiddle from Benny Martin – and a second 1964 session produced by Arthur Smith, which has even more great instrumentals than the first. Titles include "One More Hill", "Your Love Is Dying", "Dark Waters", "Sawing On The Strings", "Howdy Neighbor Howdy", "Where Did Our Young Tears Go", "Sweethearts In Heaven", "Three Finger Hop", "Lonesome Hearted Blues", and "Charlotte Breakdown". Warner/Antarctica Starts Here, 1971. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $22.99 24.98
Herbie Hancock further expands his cosmic vision in this groundbreaking album of free-flowing fusiony tracks – a record that really steps up his range of keyboards, mixing in both acoustic and electric pianos, mellotron, and even a bit of spacey moog from the legendary Patrick Gleeson! The whole thing is wonderful – very open and flowing, and even more organic than Hancock's later work on Columbia – especially given the length of the tracks on the set. In addition to Gleeson, other players include Benny Maupin on reeds, Julian Priester on trombone, Buster Williams on bass, and Billy Hart on drums – and titles include the 3 long tracks "Quasar", "Sleeping Giant", and "Water Torture" – all good ones!
