Benny SingsCity Pop ... CD
Stones Throw, 2019. New Copy ... $8.99 9.99
We've loved the music of Benny Sings for years – and can't understand why the man's not a much bigger success at a worldwide level – because his songs have the gentle soul and careful construction of the sorts of music that used to grace the airwaves decades back! Yet maybe the obscurity is always what makes Benny so great – as the songs here feel like lost AOR gems from a time when folks really knew how to make a record – but also sifted down to a core approach that never lets things get too overly-polished or commercial – kind of that modern love of classic modes that we also find in the music of Ed Motta, even though Ed's a very different singer overall. Titles include "Familiar", "Not Enough", "Duplicate", "Dreamin", "Summerlude", "Everything I Know", and "Nakameguro". CD
Also available City Pop ... LP 18.99

Keely SmithSings The John Lennon/Paul McCartney Songbook ... CD
Reprise/Real Gone, 1964. New Copy ... $12.99 13.98
A groovy singer takes on the music of The Beatles – all with a sound that does a heck of a lot for both parties involved in the proceedings! Keely Smith was well into her solo career by the time of this set – having stepped away from Louis Prima, and soaring through some great albums on her own in the early 60s – of which this gem might be the capper! 1964 is a pretty early point to recognize the great potential of the songwriting team of Paul McCartney and John Lennon – but chalk that up to producer Jimmy Bowen, who does a superb job of bringing in some of the groovier styles that Reprise Records was getting hip to at the time – served up here courtesy of arrangers Ernie Freeman and Benny Carter. Both Freeman and Carter have a slight current of soul at times, which makes for a great match with Keely's vocals – on titles that include "Please Please Me", "This Girl", "If I Fell", "She Loves You", "World Without Love", "Hard Day's Night", "Do You Want To Know A Secret", "I Want To Hold Your Hand", and "Can't Buy Me Love" – all sounding surprisingly great as jazz tunes! ✨✧ Vanessa RubinDream Is You – Vanessa Rubin Sings Tadd Dameron ... CD
Nibur, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the best albums in years from jazz singer Vanessa Rubin – a very hip set dedicated to the music of Tadd Dameron, which makes for a collection of tunes that go way past the usual! Plus, in addition to a great set of songs, the album also features direction from Cecil Bridgewater – and arrangements by Jimmy Heath, Bobby Watson, Frank Foster, and Benny Golson – really giving things a soulful swing that's just right for Vanessa's vocals! The whole thing's got all the best charm of her early work, but maybe an even hipper edge – and players include Eddie Allen on trumpet, Clifton Anderson on trombone, Patience Higgins on tenor, Bruce Williams on alto, John Cowherd on piano, and Carl Allen on drums. Many tracks are nice along, with room enough for instrumental solos too – and titles include "Kitchenette Across The Hall", "Ladybird", "Whatever Possessed Me", "I Think I'll Go Away", "Weekend", "On A Misty Night", and "Good Bait". ✨✧ Harold Mabern with Gregory Porter & Kurt EllingAfro Blue ... CD
Smoke Sessions, 2015. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The great Harold Mabern kicks it hard with a key core group – then finds a way to open up with some surprise guest artists as well – including singers Gregory Porter, Kurt Elling, Jane Monheit, and Norah Jones! The core of the album features Mabern's piano rocketing out with rhythm from John Webber on bass and Joe Farnsworth on drums – and getting some strong tenor work from the mighty Eric Alexander – and as the set goes on, the group also brings in Jeremy Pelt on trumpet, Peter Bernstein on guitar, and Steve Turre on trombone. But the key force here is the singers – especially Porter and Elling, who seem to find an old school space with the group that really takes them back to their roots. Elling sings on "You Needed Me", "Portrait Of Jennie", and "Billie's Bounce"'; Porter sings on "Afro Blue" and "The Man From Hyde Park"; Monheit sings on "I'll Take Romance" and "My One & Only Love"; and Norah Jones sings on "Don't Misunderstand" and "Fools Rush In". CD also features Alexis Cole on "Such Is Life" – and the instrumental tracks "The Chief", "Mozzin", and "Bobby Benny Jymie Lee Bu". CD

Warner/Antarctica Starts Here, 1971. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $22.99 24.98
Herbie Hancock further expands his cosmic vision in this groundbreaking album of free-flowing fusiony tracks – a record that really steps up his range of keyboards, mixing in both acoustic and electric pianos, mellotron, and even a bit of spacey moog from the legendary Patrick Gleeson! The whole thing is wonderful – very open and flowing, and even more organic than Hancock's later work on Columbia – especially given the length of the tracks on the set. In addition to Gleeson, other players include Benny Maupin on reeds, Julian Priester on trombone, Buster Williams on bass, and Billy Hart on drums – and titles include the 3 long tracks "Quasar", "Sleeping Giant", and "Water Torture" – all good ones!
