✨✧ Ben WendelHigh Heart ... CD
Edition (UK), 2020. Used ... Out Of Stock
A really lovely little record from tenor saxophonist/pianist Ben Wendel, and a set that's definitely got a high heart – this warmth that almost belies the cover – and which comes from Ben's own work on tenor, and the very cool wordless vocals of Michael Mayo! Mayo begins the record with a warmly singing mode – elevating notes, in the way that Nana Vasconcelos might have done on some classic Pat Metheny albums – but the vibe here is very different, maybe with some sharper edges at times, and a complexity to the rhythmic progression of the songs – which also feature Rhodes and piano from Shai Maestro and Gerald Clayton, bass from Joe Sanders, and drums from Nate Wood – all players who are very much up for the unusual patterns of sound between the tenor and voice. Titles include "Burning Bright", "Fearsome", "High Heart", "Kindly", "Less", and "Drawn Away". CD

Austin PeraltaEndless Planets (with bonus tracks & download) ... LP
Brainfeeder, 2009. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $23.99 34.99
A heady blend of jazz and larger elements – served up by Austin Peralta in a style that's a bit ahead of its time! The music here recalls recent sounds from the London scene, or some of the post-jazz experiments of International Anthem – but Peralta also takes things back to earlier spiritual expressions too – recalling Max Roach with strings, the work of Chris Bowden, and some other favorite spots along the way. The set features some especially great reed work – by Zane Musa on alto and Ben Wendel on tenor and soprano – and there's some nice reworking of core sounds by Strangeloop, and even a guest appearance by the Cinematic Orchestra too! Titles include "The Underwater Mountain Odyssey", "Capricornus", "Lotus Flower", "Ode To Loev", and "Algiers". 2LP version includes four bonus tracks from a BBC session! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Gerald ClaytonTributary Tales ... CD
Motema, 2017. Used ... Out Of Stock
The musical vision of Gerald Clayton just seems to be getting stronger and stronger – to a point at which records like these are almost hard to conceive in terms of his earliest work! The set's got a very progressive, righteous sort of vibe – and a style that mixes shorter sonic tracks with longer jazz-based flow – handled by Clayton on piano, Logan Richardson on alto, Ben Wendel on tenor, Joe Sanders on bass, and Justin Brown on drums. The record's got some guest percussion on a few tracks, and spoken vocals from Aja Monet and Carl Hancock Rux on two especially striking numbers that really seem to find ways for Clayton's vision to extend itself past standard jazz. Titles include "Dimensions Interwoven", "Soul Stomp", "Wakeful", "Unforeseen", "Patience Patients", "Are We", "Lover's Reverie", and "Squinted". CD

✨✧ Wendell Harrison & Phil RanelinMessage From The Tribe (second version) (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Tribe/P-Vine (Japan), Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Genius work from the Detroit underground of the 70s – one of the greatest records ever on the now-famous Tribe Records label, and a masterpiece of soul, jazz, and righteous spirit! The session's headed by tenor player Wendell Harrison – and it's got an all-star Motor City lineup that includes Marcus Belgrave on trumpet, Phil Ranelin on trombone, Jeamel Lee on vocals, Charles Eubanks on electric piano, and Charles Moore on flugelhorn. The tracks have a spacious spiritual approach that recalls some of the later Archie Shepp on Impulse – a blend of soul jazz with slight touches of electric instrumentation, some vocals, and a very progressive spirit overall – stepping proud in the new freedoms of the 70s, yet still swinging and very groovy. Titles include "Angela's Dilemma", "What We Need", "How Do We End All Of This Madness", "Merciful", and "Beneficent". This second version of the album features mixes of the tracks done in 1973. CD

✨✧ Mal WaldronBlue Drums ... LP
Music Minus One, Mid 60s. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
An obscure set from Mal Waldron – recorded for the Music Minus One label in a very unusual format: the usual drummer is taken out of Mal's trio, so that it's just him on piano and Wendell Marshall on bass. The idea is that you're supposed to use the album to accompany them on rhythm – but heck, we like it the way it is, as Mal's loose and free, but still also manages to always swing slightly. The whole thing feels a lot like his best quiet soulful moments from the late 60s – many of which were never issued in the US, like recordings from Japan and Europe. Titles include "The Twister", "Pedal Eyes", "Dealin", "Coolypso", "Earth", "Hip Tip", and "Wheelin". LP, Vinyl record album
(Blue label pressing – no longer with booklet. Cover has some ringwear, edge wear, and is bent a bit at the spine.)

✨✧ Donald Byrd & Gigi GryceEarly Byrd ... LP
Columbia, 1973. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Incredible work from the team of Donald Byrd and Gigi Gryce – crisp modern jazz, filled with soul, and never failing to swing! During the time of these recordings, Gryce was one hell of an arranger – with a tight ensemble approach that worked magic in a small combo setting. He was also a tremendous alto player – with a tone that was unlike any other musician at the time, magically sharp, with a sound that always seemed to inspire a great deal of energy from his bandmates. He gets plenty of that here from trumpeter Donald Byrd – sounding better on these sides than on most of his other 50s recordings – thanks also to some great accompanists, who include Tommy Flanagan, Wendell Marshall, and Art Taylor. Jackie Paris also joins the group on vocals for a few tunes – "Early Morning Blues" and "Elgy" – and some tunes feature additional horn work from players that include Benny Powell, Julius Watkins, and Sahib Shihab. Other tracks include "Sans Souci", "Speculation", "Stablemates", "Steppin Out", "Social Call", and "Satellite". LP reissues the albums Jazz Lab and Modern Jazz Perspective. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Coleman HawkinsReal Thing (Soul/Red Garland Trio/At Ease With) ... LP
Prestige, Late 50s. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A great collection – one that features a side of material from the album Soul, with piano by Ray Bryant; and another side of a set recorded with the Red Garland Trio. Also features the full album At Ease – wonderful late work by Coleman Hawkins – a player who was very much "at ease" with himself at the time, and opened up tremendously on albums like this. The format is beautiful – simple small group backings by Tommy Flanagan, Wendell Marshall, and Osie Johnson – with Coleman out front, blowing these deep and mellow tenor lines that could stop a locomotive in its tracks! Titles include "At Dawning", "I'll Get By", "For You For Me For Evermore", and "Mighty Lak A Rose". LP, Vinyl record album
