Albert AylerBells/Prophecy ... LP
ESP (Italy), 1965. Near Mint- 2LP ... $24.99
A double-length set that brings together 2 key early live sets by Albert Ayler – both recorded on the New York scene of the mid 60s! Bells was an unusual one-sided record that featured only 20 minutes of music, performed with an intensity that hardly leaves room for complaints about the shortness of the album! The single track "Bells" was performed at Town Hall by Ayler with a group that includes Donald Ayler on trumpet, Charles Tyler on alto sax, Lewis Worrell on bass, and Sunny Murray on percussion – all coming together in a raw, real sense of freedom – beautifully explored here without ever getting too overindulgent. The tune may well be one of the greatest illustrations of the ESP format at its best – as Ayler and company never stray too far, but carve out some incredibly imaginative space through their starkly-blown horn solos! Prophecy is longer – a full album that was recorded live in 1964 at the Cellar Cafe in New York, but not issued by ESP until years later, after Ayler's untimely early death. The performance is a trio outing – with Ayler's tenor alongside the bass of Gary Peacock and drums of Sunny Murray – all freely skirting around each other's space on the date, in a way that allows Ayler to take the bold lead with his sharp-toned solos, but which also allows for free interplay between the bass and percussion. Ayler's tone and wide swaths of sound are simply amazing – and titles include two variations on "Ghosts", plus "Spirits", "Prophecy", and "Wizard". LP, Vinyl record album

Clarinet SummitSouthern Bells ... LP
Black Saint (Italy), 1987. Near Mint- ... $6.99
A groundbreaking ensemble – akin to the World Saxophone Quartet, and no doubt inspired by their experiments at the same time. The difference, though, is the range of experience of the players – as the group features David Murray, Jimmy Hamilton, Alvin Batiste, and John Carter, all playing b-flat or bass clarinets. No other accompaniment is featured, and titles include "Fluffy's Blues", "Beat Box", "Perdido", and "Southern Bells". LP, Vinyl record album

John HicksHells Bells (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Strata East/Pure Pleasure (UK), 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $34.99 44.99
One of the first albums as a leader from pianist John Hicks – a record that really set the tone for countless great sides to come – and which follows on years of great work with Art Blakey, Lee Morgan, Hank Mobley, Charles Tolliver, and other soulful jazz giants! This set was Hicks' only date for the Strata East label – and has an open, flowing vibe that's very much in keeping with the imprint – and which is maybe a bit different than his later, more familiar material! Part of the strength of the record is bassist Clint Houston – who's completely sublime throughout, and has a way of shaping his notes with this depth that seems to set Hicks free to fly across the keys of the piano on these very long original tunes. Drummer Cliff Barbaro is also part of the trio – and can wind things up when needed, but also lay back and allow some great interplay between Houston and Hicks – on beautiful long tunes that include "Hells Bells", "Avojca", "Yemenja", and "Angie's Tune". Shelly Manne, Andre Previn & Red MitchellBells Are Ringing ... LP
Contemporary, 1958. Very Good+ ... $11.99
An overlooked set from the late 50s show-meets-jazz run of Shelly Manne and Andre Previn – a cool jazz instrumental take on the score to Bells Are Ringing! As with other Manne/Previn pairings, the music is incredibly sprightly – some of the best jazz Andre ever recorded in the 50s, with piano lines that are a lot more fluid and freewheeling than on his mood music sets for other labels – and Manne's careful approach to percussion makes for lots of light, lyrical rhythms – which have plenty of support in spirit from the wonderful bass of Red Mitchell. Titles include two versions of "The Party's Over" – one slow, one as a "party" version – plus "I Met A Girl", "Just In Time", "It's A Perfect Relationshi", "Is It A Crime", "Mu Cha Cha", and "Long Before I Knew You". Mike OldfieldTubular Bells ... LP
Virgin/Epic, 1973. Very Good ... $4.99
Easily one of the most successful albums of the British jazz rock years – but still a longtime favorite of ours as well! Mike Oldfield sets a whole new standard here for concept rock – not only by working on a single album-length composition that spans all of sides one and two, but also by playing all instruments himself – in a one man symphony of sound that's pretty darn great! The main theme of the piece will be recognizable from it's stripped-down use in The Exorcist – but we really love Oldfield's expansion on it here in a range of different overdubbed instruments, which are also sometimes processed – and then introduced by Mike in a spoken part that's one of the highlights of the album. ✨✧ Patti Labelle & The BluebellesSleigh Bells, Jingle Bells and Bluebelles ... CD
Relic, 1963. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Christmas Soul from the great Patti Labelle – a CD that brings together her first full Christmas album, plus a number of bonus singles – making for a nicely stuffed 16 track collection! These early 60s sides have a sweet, warm, innocent sound that's completely wonderful – a soulful girl group take on the sound of the season, handled with instrumentation that's light and playful, yet never too kitschy to get in the way of the group's soulful vocals. Patti sounds wonderful on these tunes, with a quality that reminds us a bit of Barbara Mason in her earlier years – and titles include "White Christmas", "Blue Christmas", "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve", "The First Noel", "O Come All Ye Faithful", "Silent Night", "You'll Never Walk Alone", "Auld Lang Syne", and "Little Town Of Bethlehem". ✨✧ Attila ZollerDream Bells ... LP
Enja (Germany), 1976. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A hell of an album from guitarist Attila Zoller – one that's just a trio date, but which almost seems to have a fuller feel than some of his records from the time! The rhythms are wonderful – this warm, round bass from Frank Luther, whose tones alone really create a soulful energy on the record – and drummer Sonny Brown's got this nicely skittish tone that percolates even the mellow moments in this really great way – leaving Zoller to solo spaciously over the top with a sublimet one, and maybe a slightly deeper sense of soul than usual. Titles include "Dream Bells", "Seascape", "In Your Own Sweet Way", and "Sudden Romance". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has some light aging, and a small bit of peeling of the laminate – but is nice overall.)

✨✧ John KleinChristmas Sound Spectacular/Let's Ring The Bells All Around The Christmas Tree ... CD
Real Gone, 1959/1964. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A sonic spectacular for Christmas – two unusual Holiday albums from the glory days of RCA's Living Stereo series! First up is A Christmas Sound Spectacular – a set that features a bell-heavy approach to seasonal favorites – not in a way that's overdone Carillion music, but instead this mode that mixes the sonic dynamics of the hi-fi era with a range of rich tones on bells and chimes! In other words, things sometimes get nicely way out – as on John Klein's RCA work with Sid Ramin – on tunes that include "Gesu Bambino", "Winter Wonderland", "Jingle Bells", "Silver Bells", "Frosty The Snowman", and "Santa Claus Is Comin To Town". Let's Ring The Bells All Around The Christmas Tree is a record that features some of the bells promised in the title – mixed with richer arrangements that also sometimes feature a bit of chorus vocals! The record's the kind of album that's great to put on later on Christmas evening – after everyone's completely stuffed to the gills, and kind of nodding out around the tree – because there's some sleepier moments in the mix, and a few more sprightly numbers that may have you rising from your chair, and heading into the kitchen for some leftovers and beer. Titles include "Greensleeves", "I'll Be Home For Christmas", "Sleigh Ride", "All Around The Christmas Tree", "The Little Drummer Boy", and "The Christmas Song". CD

Curtis AmyWay Down ... LP
Pacific Jazz, 1962. Very Good ... $29.99
An incredible album by one of the best soul jazz reed players to emerge from the LA scene of the 60s! Amy started his career playing R&B-ish organ/tenor material, but by this point, he was really opening up his bag a lot – hitting modalish grooves that showed definite traces of Coltrane, but which were also still firmly rooted in his Texas tenor tradition. This album's one of his rarest, and it features a very young Roy Ayers (billed as Ron Ayers) playing vibes, plus Marcus Belgrave on trumpet, Roy Brewster on trombone, and John Houston on piano. Titles include "Way Down", "Liberia", "Lisa", "Bells & Horns", and "A Soulful Bee, A Soulful Rose". Beautiful! LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono black label pressing. Cover has splitting in the top seam and spine, with a gloss wrinkle in front.)

Blue Note, 1958. Used ... $6.99
One of the most legendary albums on Blue Note – or maybe THE most legendary albums on Blue Note – a stunning session that shows what the label was capable of when it was really hitting on all burners – from the lineup to the music to the production – and even the classic cover art on the front! The album's a crowning achievement for pianist Sonny Clark – a player who'd already brought greatness to the world before the record, but really knocks it out of the park during the session – leading a razor sharp lineup that includes Art Farmer on trumpet, Jackie McLean on alto, Paul Chambers on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums – all coming together with some magic in the studio, crafting a sound that forever put Blue Note on the map! Tracks are long, open-ended, and almost effortlessly soulful – and titles include Clark's classics "Cool Struttin" and "Blue Minor", plus versions of "Sippin At Bells" and "Deep Night". Plus, this CD also adds 2 long bonus cuts – "Lover" and "Royal Flush" – both of which weren't on the original album! CD

Ornette ColemanOrnette At 12 ... LP
Impulse, 1969. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $29.99
Two generations of Ornette Coleman – making incredible music here together! The album's a freewheeling late 60s outing from the senior Ornette – who plays alto, violin, and trumpet here – working with his young son Ornette D Coleman on drums, just 12 years old at the time – but a surprisingly strong free jazz player overall! Heavyweight help comes from Dewey Redman on tenor – really tremendous here, with energy that's up there with Albert Ayler or Archie Shepp at their 60s best – plus Charlie Haden on bass, really coming strongly back into the music at this point in his career. The album's quite free overall – similar to some of Coleman's Blue Note work of the period – and titles include "COD", "Rainbows", "New York", and "Bells and Chimes". LP, Vinyl record album

A remake of the earlier Don Camillo film from the 50s – done here with music that's got an even more sprightly feel! You might know Pino Donaggio from darker, more serious soundtracks – but here, he uses a mix of keyboards and woodwinds to craft lots of groovy tunes that are in the best spirit of the 80s comedic Italian soundtrack modes! Given that Terence Hill was the lead, we can bet that there's a lot of goofy action on screen – set to tunes that include "Ring The Bells", "Verso Pomponesco", "Sfida A Carte", "I'm A Fool", "Don Camillo Parla Con Il Signore", and "Nella Chiesa". Bill EvansInterplay Sessions ... LP
Riverside/Milestone, 1962/1982. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $29.99
A real standout in the Bill Evans catalog for Riverside – and that's saying a lot, given how important all of his Riverside albums are! The core session's a rare quintet outing for Evans – one that breaks the mode of the usual trio format by adding in Freddie Hubbard on trumpet and Jim Hall on guitar – alongside rhythm players Percy Heath on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums – already a unique enough match for Evans' talents. In a way, the record's one of those sessions that Riverside would sometimes do – pairing a key new voice as a leader with others in an all-star group – but in another way, it's also a return to the sound that first brought Evans' to a wider audience in the 1957 and 1958 years – when he was working in non-trio groups with more famous players – adding his unique piano stylings to their (then) better-known solo modes. The pairing of Evans and Hall has been beautifully documented on other records – and sounds equally great here – but the real treat is Freddie Hubbard's horn, which often lays back on most of the tracks, then bursts in with a brashness that really ignites some of the tunes! He's playing a bit muted here, trying to go for that Miles/Evans combination from the late 50s – but that's plenty ok with us, as we love those records a lot. Titles include "When You Wish Upon A Star", "You & The Night & The Music", "I'll Never Smile again", "You Go To My Head" and the Evans original, "Interplay". This double-length set also expands the original Interplay album with even more material from another group session in 1962 – a set recorded also with Philly Joe Jones on drums and Jim Hall on guitar – plus Ron Carter on bass and Zoot Sims on tenor. Titles include "Time Remembered", "Loose Bloose", "Fun Ride", "There Came You", "Fudgesickle Built For Four", and "My Bells". LP, Vinyl record album

Douglas EwartSongs Of Sunlife – Inside The Didjeridu ... CD
Innova, 2003. Used ... $4.99
Wonderful explorations of the sound of the didjeridu – done at a level that's quite different than any other use of the instrument we've ever heard – no surprise, given that the music here is all created by AACM legend Douglas Ewart! The performances bridge Ewart's two worlds of organic improvisation and more serious tonal composition – both of which prove to be perfect settings for the instrument – which is used here at a level that's completely respectful, and without any sense of gimmick at all. Different variations on the didjeridu are used on different tracks – mostly solo in the lead, but with occasional accompaniment on string bass, bells, and electronics. Titles include "Walk & Drop", "Ginep", "Seeds Of War", "Mud Bath III", and "Dancing Inside Of Soul". CD

Phil FranceCircle ... CD
Gondwana (UK), 2018. New Copy ... $9.99
Sweet keyboards from Phil France – a player who's more than content enough to let his instrument take the lead, often in these flowing soundscapes that are even more evocative than on his previous album for Gondwana – but a musician who also manages to echo some deeper currents, but with a surprisingly small amount of effort! Many of these songs have a meditative quality – similar to the shift the Gondwana spiritual jazz label has taken in recent years – and France picks up and drops rhythmic elements throughout the set – sometimes to augment the cyclical flow of his keyboard lines, sometimes as a way to give that energy a bit more direction. Phil handles most of the instrumentation on the album, but has two guest drummers – and titles include "The Breaks", "Circle", "Bells", "River", "Prophet", "The First Thing That You Say", and "Mr Jackal". Athens Of The North (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $13.99
The duo of Warren Hampshire and Greg Foat keep on getting more and more interesting as the years go on – to a point where they seem to be carving out a really special place in music that might well be a genre of their own! The music here represents a wonderful evolution of their skills together – sounds that are still steeped in older elements of jazz, funk, and other modes – but which have also taken on a new sort of complexity, yet all without ever losing the organic, immediate approach that makes them so compelling! There's a blend here that's as if an Italian soundtrack of the 70s used spiritual jazz for its instrumentation – long flowing tracks that unfold with a gentle sort of beauty – with Hampshire on guitars and percussion, Foat on organ, guitar, piano, and kalimba – and other instrumentation on bells, gongs, flute, and percussion. Noah HowardLive At The Swing Club – Torino Italy ... CD
Ricordi/SeriE.WOC (Italy), 1974. New Copy ... $19.99
One of the most spiritual sessions we've ever heard from Noah Howard – a real gem from his 70s years on the European scene – and a record that takes all his previous avant explorations and gives them even more focus than before! The group's got a great way of building up a cosmic sense of energy before it takes off – real magic that comes from the Fender Rhodes and acoustic piano of Michael Smith, the bass of Bob Reid, and drums of Noel McGhee – the last of whom is a player who really drives the action along when needed – setting the spark that burns to a fire in Howard's bold alto solos. Noah also plays a bit of bells and tambourine – and Smith has a great way of resonating his acoustic keys in these wide waves of sound – very introspective, like some of Lonnie Liston Smith's early work with Pharoah Sanders. Decca/RPM (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy ... $6.99 13.99
Ear-opening work from Jon-Mark – best known as half of the Mark-Almond band with Johnny Almond, but here working as a solo act on his own – in a spare folksy mode that's right up there with some of the best on the Brit folk scene of the 60s! Jon's guitar playing alone is worth the price of admission – at a level that rivals that of Bert Jansch, John Renbourn, or some of the others of the new generation that have gotten more fame over the decades – and he's also a hell of a singer, with a voice that's at once ancient and youthful, maybe more tuned towards some older themes than Dylan politics, but also with a grooviness that echoes a bit of Donovan too. Apart from two tracks here that were issued as a single, all the other material has never been released – making the whole thing a huge discovery, finally given its due. Terp (Netherlands), 2003. Used ... $1.99
A brilliantly funky and raw live recording by the Congo's great Konono No 1 – taped in Vera, Holland on their first European tour in February of 2003, and released on Terp, the label owned by Terrie Ex of the Ex! The brittle, in-the-red likembe patterns fly by in high-velocity cycles, amped-up by the group's trademark distortion and relentlessly propelled by a three-piece rhythm section of congas, cow bells, and metal percussion – and all of it's topped by great call-and-response singing. Although the music is rooted in the ancient traditions of the Bazombe – a tribe indigenous to the area around the Angola-Conga border – the furious attack almost sounds like a cross between techno throb and punk energy. It's no surprise that the band's touring mates, the Ex, preferred to open for Konono – there's no way anyone could follow this mind-numbing stuff. Kuhn's working here not only on acoustic piano, but also alto sax, gong, antelope horn, and more – and other members of the group include JF Jenny-Clarke on bass and cello, Jacques Thollot on percussion, and Stu Martin on drums and bells! Columbia, 1971. New Copy ... $4.99 6.99
A tremendous album from Laura Nyro – a real return to the soulful style of her roots, thanks to help from Labelle on backing vocals, and the team of Gamble & Huff on production! If Nyro only ever gave the world this record, that would more than be enough – because the whole thing's an incredibly hip blend of her own great songwriting and some of the more righteous strands of American soul music at the time. Most of the tracks are older soul numbers – some done relatively straight, others done with the more personal, contemplative style you'd expect from Nyro during these years. And decades before Amy Winehouse or Joss Stone started hitting territory like this, Nyro proved that a set of soul tracks like this could come off well, if handled with the right talent! Titles include "The Bells", "I Met Him On A Sunday", "Spanish Harlem", "You've Really Got A Hold On Me", "Desiree", "The Wind", "Nowhere To Run", and "It's Gonna Take A Miracle". The one and only album that Sun Ra ever cut for the Savoy label – a beautifully understated session that mixes more conventional jazz with some particularly Ra-like touches! The group on the set is extremely tight – especially the horn work of John Gilmore, Marshall Allen, and Pat Patrick – who glide together along with some of the best mainstream modernists of the 50s, but break out with earthier tones and phrases that clearly mark their playing as different from the norm. Ra plays relatively straight piano for the album, but there's more than enough Arkestra touches from other players on bells and assorted percussion – emphasizing the rhythmic qualities of the tunes, and really living up to the promise of titles that include "Bassism", "China Gates", "Of Sounds And Something Else", "Tapestry From An Asteroid", "Jet Flight", "Space Jazz Reverie", and "Where Is Tomorrow?". There's a wonderfully lyrical vibe to the record – as Smith spins things out alongside a core trio of Dwight Andrews on tenor, bass clarinet, and alto flute – and the great Bobby Naughton on vibes, marimbas, and bells – musicians who work with Leo in the kind of open, instrument-changing space first inspired by the AACM – but with the inherent sense of poetry that Smith always brought to his own music. 40s field recordings in pre-Castro Cuba – a series of tracks recorded in Havana and more rural locations, all of which document the surviving African traditions in Cuban music! Much of the work here is relatively spare and percussive – done with instrumentation that includes gourd scrapers, calabash rattles, friction drums, and bells – topped by vocals that often have a rhythmically chanting feel. Styles document the Lucumi, Arara, Abakwa, and Kimbisa cultures – and titles include "Lucumi Song", "Song To Orisha Oko", "Djuka Drums", "Song To Chongo", and "Song To Obatala". CD

Ace (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy ... $14.99 19.99
Liverpool is best known as the home of The Beatles – but back in the 60s, the city was overflowing with tremendous musical talent – including a wealth of female groups and singers who added a heck of a lot to the British scene in the decade! This collection digs very deep into that great well of sound – and pulls together key cuts by a few bigger names, plus lots more work by artists we never would have discovered otherwise – female singers who recorded rare singles for the British major labels, then never graced the charts again – yet left us all the wonderful little gems that make up this package! The set list is wonderful – almost an all-girl answer to the male-dominated sounds of the British Invasion – and the whole thing has the usual wonderful Ace Records notes that detail all the great songs within. 25 titles in all – with tracks that include "That Boy Of Mine" by The Breakaways, "Someone To Love" by Three Bells, "Long Tall Shorty" by The Liverbirds, "Everybody Loves A Lover" by Beryl Marsden, "Baby Don't Look Down" by Tiffany With The Thoughts, "I Want You" by Jeannie & The Big Guys, "A Shot Of Rhythm & Blues" by Cilla Black, "Come See Me" by Sandy Edmonds, "Just Being Your Baby Turns Me On" by Cindy Cole, "Dumb Head" by The Sharades, "I Don't Want To Be The One" by Samantha Jones, "Am I Dreaming" by Tiffany, "Till He Tells Me" by Jacki Martin, and "I Don't Understand" by Nola York. Warm sounds for the Holiday season – a double-length set of Christmas tunes, sung by the great Eddy Arnold! Eddy recorded most of these numbers at a time when he was at the height of his countrypolitan talents – able to croon a tune with a smooth, mellow approach that almost made him the Perry Como of the country world – although set up with more of a Nasvhille vibe, thanks to producer Chet Atkins! The match of Atkins and Arnold is one of the all-time greats in mid-century pop – and the duo seem to push themselves even more strongly on this seasonal material. The CD features the full 1961 Christmas album recorded by Eddie, plus loads more Holiday singles – most of which have never been collected before. 26 titles in all – with tracks that include "Christmas Can't Be Far Away", "White Christmas", "Up On The Housetop", "Will Santa Come To Shanty Town", "Jingle Bell Rock", "Christmas", "I Heard The Bells On Christmas Day", "Silent Night", "Jolly Old Saint Nicholas", "Winter Wonderland", "The Angel & The Stranger", and "New Year's Greeting". ECM (Germany), Late 70s/1980s/1990s/2000s/Early 2010s. Used 21 CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A huge chapter of work from the Art Ensemble Of Chicago – one that not only includes their own albums for the ECM label, but also related solo and side projects too! The set begins with four Art Ensemble albums – Nice Guys, Full Force, Urban Bushman, and The Third Decade – all of which came out as a statement of the group's strengths in the late 70s and early 80s – their first mainstream appearance after a few years of being very underground, and material that helped set a whole new standard for avant jazz expression in the generation to come! Next is the fantastic album Divine Love, by trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith – not necessarily an Art Ensemble album, but one that does feature great work from trumpeter Leo Smith – plus trumpeter Kenny Wheeler, bassist Charlie Haden, and vibist Bobby Naughton. Next are four albums by Lester Bowie – two smaller group, and two with his Brass Fantasy ensemble – the records The Great Pretender, All The Magic/The One & Only, I Only Have Eyes For You, and Avant Pop. Then, after Bowie's early passing, the Art Ensemble recorded their beautiful Tribute To Lester – as a trio lineup with Roscoe Mitchell, Malachi Favors, and Don Moye. Mitchell takes the helm next – on a surprisingly big flurry of projects for ECM – records that often show a deeper compositional strand in his music – on records that include Nine To Get Ready, Composition/Improvisation, Far Side, Bells For The South Side, and Boustrophedon – the last of which was led by Evan Parker, with Mitchell in the Transatlantic Art Ensemble. Last up are three records by drummer Jack DeJohnette for ECM – New Directions and New Directions In Europe, both featuring a group with Lester Bowie on trumpet – and Made In Chicago, which features Roscoe Mitchell, Henry Threadgill, and Muhal Ricard Abrams. Recordings were made between 1978 and 2015 – and comes in a box set with a big booklet of notes! CD

Sony/Real Gone, 1961/1983. New Copy 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A pair of Holiday albums from Nashville guitar legend Chet Atkins – back to back in a 2CD set, complete with a huge amount of bonus material too! First up is the classic Christmas With Chet Atkins – a sweet strummy Christmas album from the great Chet – a set that's filled with guitar-based tunes that have a special Holiday feel – some of which have warm vocal passages from the Anita Kerr quartet! We always love Chet on RCA during the classic years, but his warm sound is especially nice for the Holidays – a sort of cozy, cuddly approach to guitar that sounds great on these familiar tunes – and which is recorded here with some of those perfect RCA country touches of the early 60s! Titles include "Jingle Bell Rock", "Jingle Bells", "Silver Bells", "White Christmas", "Blue Christmas", "Silent Night", and "Little Drummer Boy". Next is East Tennessee Christmas – an early 80s album from guitar great Chet Atkins – one that really updates his sound for a modern generation, yet still leaves plenty of room for his masterful work on the strings! The record has fuller backings on most tracks – gentle orchestrations that still have the guitar in the lead – and there's also some chorus vocals, in a mode that's kind of an 80s take on the older Anita Kerr Singers approach. Titles include "East Tennesse Christmas", "Let It Snow", "I'll Be Home For Christmas", "Away In A Manger", "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen", and "Jingle Bell Rock". CD set features LOTS of bonus tracks – including "Christmas Carols", "Jingle Bells", "Greensleeves", "Bells Of St Mary's", "Winter Wonderland (1976)", "White Christmas (1976)", "Jingle Bells (1976)", "Silver Bells (1976)", "Ave Maria", "Winter Walkin", "Sleighbells Reindeer & Snhow", and lots more. Sublime live sounds from the great Nat Birchall – one of the most spiritual jazzmen currently working today! Nat himself plays tenor and soprano sax – and the group features piano, vibes, bass, and drums – plus a bit of bells as well. The whole thing's very spiritual – like some lost Strata set from the 70s – and titles include remakes of Clifford Jordan's "John Coltrane" and Alice Coltrane's "Journey In Satchidananda" – plus the tracks "Sacred Dimension", "The Black Ark", "Return To Ithaca", and "Divine Harmony". Christmas happens all around the globe, even in spots where the snowfall is light, and a White Christmas is unlikely to happen – and while we're not entirely sure this is the way they celebrate the holiday on the South Beach of Miami, Dio and the Candi Cane Crew try to imagine what such a celebration might sound like! The approach here is electro soul with gentle bass – mostly using familiar Christmas tunes, reworked with a mode that's almost that crossover holiday soul style from the late 80s – but with the inclusion of a few new raps by group members from time to time. Columbia/Real Gone, Mid 60s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A Columbia Records country classic – from the glory days of the 60s Christmas record scene! Seems like just about everyone got a chance to cut a set for the Holidays back in that decade – and Jimmy Dean's time in the studio is surprisingly great – set to slight arrangements from Don Sebesky that have slight country touches, but maybe a bit more conventional pop for the season – with Jim singing in this warmly mellow mode that's not too far from the territory of Bing Crosby, especially in the way he rumbles down in the lower end of his register. Our favorite tracks are the originals – "Jimmy's Christmas Card" and "Yes Patricia There Is A Santa Claus" – penned by Dean with Don Sebesky – and other tracks include "Blue Christmas", "White Christmas", "My Christmas Room", "The Cowboy's Prayer", and "Silver Bells". Ramsey Lewis had such great success with his first album of Christmas instrumentals for Chess Records, he soon hopped back in the studio for a second record – but one with a very distinct difference! This time around, the trio's a bit unusual – in that it features regular bassist Eldee Young, but also the great Steve McCall on drums – a percussionist who'd later really flourish in the 70s, and gain great fame for his work in the group Air! The presence of McCall is no surprise, though – Malachi Favors and Muhal Richard Abrams also make appearances on early 60s Chess jazz albums – but it does give the record a nicely special sort of sound, as does the added instrumentation on some tracks too. About half the set features the trio, and the rest features a bigger group that's arranged by King Fleming and Will Jackson – jazz trio with a bit of strings, including some nice harp, and a touch of trombone from John Avant. Two sweet instrumental Christmas albums – both from the RCA pop paradise of the 60s! First up are the Living Guitars – that instrumental lineup that took 60s guitar modes from the pop world, and set them up with a bit more of a bachelor pad/easy listening motif – guitar out front in the mix, but also set up in larger arrangements – and sometimes more late nite than rocking. In the mode of other "living" series records from the time, many titles are in medley mode – and include "Winter Wonderland/Sleigh Ride", "Oh Christmas Tree/Deck the Halls", "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus/Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas", "Jingle Bell Rock/Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree", and "Silver Bells/The Real Meaning of Christmas". Next up are the Living Strings – a group who were a bit like the Soulful Strings over at Chess Records, but a lot more mellow overall – although this time around, they've got a bit of an electric bass at the bottom to give them a bump when needed! The group's lush sound is perfect for a Holiday record – especially the kind you play after a big meal, when the evening is winding down – and titles include "The Christmas Waltz", "Winter Wonderland/Jingle Bells/Snow Bells", "Oh Come All Ye Faithful/The First Noel/The Coventry Carol/O Holy Night", "Do You Hear What I Hear", "A Handful of Happy New Years", "Toyland/The Little Drummer Boy/Parade of the Wooden Soldiers", and "Blue Christmas". The work here is a bit hard to describe – often instrumental, but not really jazz – filled with work on guitars and keyboards, but neither rock or soul – and touched with lots of unusual instrumentation that includes accordion, xylophone, whistle, guiro, bells, and even an "iron sheet". If Nyro only ever gave the world this record, that would more than be enough – because the whole thing's an incredibly hip blend of her own great songwriting and some of the more righteous strands of American soul music at the time. Stunning, stunning work from The Originals – one of the best male groups on 70s Motown, stepping out here on a record that might be one of their greatest ever! Although the group could sound strong in other settings, this album seems to have something really special going on – almost a sense of righteous, personal energy that matches the evolving sound of Marvin Gaye at this point – with a similar force that really helps redefine the way that male soul harmonies come together! Frank Sinatra's first run of Christmas work – material recorded for Columbia Records in the late 40s, but quite similar to his better-known Holiday sides for Capitol in the 50s! As with that work, the style here is quite respectful of the spirit of the season – more reverent than playful, although always with an undercurrent of sadness that makes the tunes especially nice – that Christmas longing that would show up in the best Holiday records, which Sinatra always seemed to get. Heck, even the version of "Jingle Bells" sounds a bit melancholy – and pretty darn nice, too – next to tunes that include "Christmas Dreaming", "Winter Wonderland", "Let It Snow", "Santa Claus Is Comin To Town", and "White Christmas" – plus a medley of "O Little Town Of Bethlehem/Joy To The World/White Christmas", which begins with a cool spoken introduction. ✨✧ Frank Sinatra/Phil Spector/Elvis Presley/Bing Crosby/Ella FitzgeraldChristmas Tale – Timeless Classic Albums (Jolly Christmas/Christmas Gift To You/Christmas Album/Merry Christmas/Swinging Christmas) (5CD set) ... CD
Vinylogy (UK), 1950s/Early 60s. New Copy 5CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great set of Christmas classics – five albums, each represented with LP-styled artwork in a box of 5 CDs! First up is Jolly Christmas by Frank Sinatra – one of the greatest Christmas albums of the 20th century – a rich tapestry of sadness and longing from Ol' Blue Eyes himself! Sure, most folks think that Christmas albums are supposed to be cheery and celebratory – but Frank, coming off of his best Wee Small Hours years at Capitol, rightly chose the sadder side of Christmas – and put together an album full of songs that really get at the bluer side of the holiday. Side one of the set includes some tremendous secular songs – the kind of mid-century tunes that often had a dark undercurrent of separation and unfulfilled desire – masquerading as holiday tunes, but in Frank's hands, coming off more like smokey late night tunes of lost love and wasted life. Side two's got some more spiritual-oriented tunes – but again, done by Frank, with arrangements by Gordon Jenkins, these tunes come off with a lot less celebratory spirit than you'd expect. Titles include "The Christmas Waltz", "Mistletoe & Holly", "The Christmas Song", "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas", "It Came Upon A Midnight Clear", and "I'll Be Home For Christmas". Next is A Christmas Gift To You – Phil Spector's classic Christmas album – a swirling delight of 60s pop and soul numbers, still one of the greatest full Christmas LPs ever recorded! The whole thing is wonderful – a mix of soul, rock, and pop – all produced with that classic "wall of sound" style that made Phil Spector such an early production genius in the 60s! The music is from those magical times when boundary-busting art and craft were mixed perfectly with pop styles that anyone could instantly fall in love with – and titles include "Frosty The Snowman" by The Ronettes, "Here Comes Santa Claus" by Bob B Soxx & The Blue Jeans, "Marshmallow World" by Darlene Love, "Sleigh Ride" by The Ronnettes, "Winter Wonderland" by Darlene Love, "Santa Claus Is Comin To Town" by The Crystals, and "Silent Night" by Phil and other artists on the set! Next is Elvis Christmas Album – an early Holiday gem from Elvis Presley – a set that had RCA Records wisely rushing the young singer into the studio to cut a host of Christmas tunes – which ensured that Elvis would be spinning on the turntable for many seasons to come! Titles include "Here Comes Santa Claus", "Silent Night", "Blue Christmas", "White Christmas", and "Santa Bring My Baby Back". Next is Merry Christmas from Bing Crosby – which may well be THE Christmas album of the 20th century – a 50s issue of 40s singles cut by Der Bingle, packaged in a cover with a classic cover image that's ensured that the record stayed in print for dozens of Decembers in years to come! Given that Bing virtually owned Christmas on TV during the 50s, 60s, and 70s, the album's place in popular music is well-earned – and honestly, Bing's "aw shucks, I'm just reg'lar folks" sort of approach to these tunes really helped create a kind of common man secular side to the Holidays that forever transformed America's celebration of the season. Or maybe we're going to far with this one . . . But whatever the case, the album's a standard, and one we were certainly raised on. Titles include "Silver Bells", "Jingle Bells", "Silent Night", "White Christmas", "Adeste Fideles", "Faith Of Our Fathers", "I'll Be Home For Christmas", and "It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas". Last up is Ella Fitzgerald Wishes You A Swinging Christmas – a wonderful Holiday album that's stayed fresh for years! Ella's got a perfect style to interpret these numbers – working with Frank DeVol and Russ Garcia in a set of lightly jazzy versions of Christmas favorites like "Sleigh Ride", "Jingle Bells", "Winter Wonderland", "White Christmas", "Frosty The Snowman", and one of the best versions of "What Are You Doing New Years Eve" ever recorded!
