Atco, 1968. Very Good ... $6.99 9.99
Early Bee Gees at their best – springing forth into the world of pop with a sound that's completely their own – and which grabs us right from the very first note on classic albums like this! The vocals are full, flowery, and sung in a style that's completely sublime – backed by a brilliant blend of simple acoustic elements and some fuller, ambitious arrangements that really make the whole thing soar – partly psych, fully pop, and put together with a thoughtfulness that's still compelling so many decades later! Titles include the classic "Massachusetts", plus "The Change Is Made", "Horizontal", "Harry Braff", "Lemons Never Forget", and "World". LP, Vinyl record album

Bee Gees, Tavares, Yvonne Elliman, & OthersSaturday Night Fever ... LP
RSO, 1977. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... $11.99
Yes, it was a mega-hit – and yes, it was one of those records that everyone who lived through the 70s seemed to own at one time – but after all these decades, you can't deny the power of the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack – especially for the way that it mixed club soul classics with new original material! Obviously, the Bee Gees cover placement make them big stars of the record – but the set's also got some great early disco gems – like "Open Sesame" by Kool & The Gang, "Disco Inferno" by The Trammps, "KJEE" by MFSB, "Calypso Breakdown" by Ralph MacDonald, "Fifth Of Beethoven" by Walter Murphy, "If I Can't Have You" by Yvonne Elliman, "Boogie Shoes" by KC & The Sunshine Band, and "More Than A Woman" by Tavares. The Bee Gees reinvent themselves from the early days – and sing "Stayin Alive", "How Deep Is Your Love", "More Than A Woman", "Jive Talkin", "You Should Be Dancin", and "Night Fever" – and the set also features a few instrumentals by David Shire – "Manhattan Skyline", "Night On Disco Mountain" and "Salsation". Sublime sounds from The Bee Gees – a near-perfect bit of 60s pop, and a record that would set the scene for so many others to come! The vocals are what you've always known from the Bros Gibb, but the production is what really sends us – complicated, baroque, and filled with these completely compelling instrumental and studio twists that make the already-charming lyrics even more lovely! Titles include the classics "Holiday" and "Turn Of The Century" – plus "In My Own Time", "Red Chair Fade Away", "Close Another Door", and "To Love Somebody". CD

✨✧ Bee GeesIdea ... LP
Atco, 1968. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Things are getting slightly more complicated for the Bee Gees here – but we mean that in a good way! The vocals are superb – soaring forth with this unique sort of majesty, and light years away from their 70s disco pop styles – and the backings are a strange mix of rootsy and orchestral – making for a very odd juxtaposition that really seems to push the whole thing forward brilliantly! There's nobody else like the Bee Gees at this point in their career – a possible acquired taste, but one that's got you hooked once you get it! Titles include "When The Swallows Fly", "In The Summer Of His Years", "Indian Gin And Whiskey Dry", "I've Gotta Get A Message To You", "Kilburn Towers", and "I Started A Joke". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousTo Love Somebody – The Songs Of The Bee Gees 1966 to 1970 ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Right from the start, the brothers Gibb were recognized as some of the most striking songwriters of their generation – a fact that's sometimes lost, due to the trio's later disco fame in the spotlight – which obscures their huge impact as songwriters from the early years! This set finally does justice to that legacy – and not only includes the rock and pop covers you might expect, but also a fair bit of soul tracks too – showing a remarkable appeal that the Bee Gees had early on for a soul audience – an influence that began long before the days in which they helped bring disco to the mainstream. There's some really wonderful tunes here – maybe less hits overall than in the usual Ace Records "songwriter" series – and the set features 24 tracks that include "To Love Somebody" by James Carr, "I've Gotta Get A Message To You" by Percy Sledge, "I Can't See Nobody" by Nina Simone, "Give A Hand Take A Hand" by The Staple Singers, "World" by Sharon Tandy, "Massachusetts" by Tommy Roe, "I Started A Joke" by Pat Kelly, "Spicks & Specks" by The Status Quo, "And The Sun Will Shine" by Paul Jones, "He's A Thief" by April Byron, "Town Of Tuxley Toymaker (part 1)" by Jon, "Morning Of My Life" by John Holt, "First Of May" by Jose Feliciano, "Words" by Bettye Swann, and "New York Mining Disaster 1941" by Velvett Fogg. MotionsElectric Baby (180 gram silver vinyl pressing) ... LP
Philips/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99 33.99
A super-groovy Dutch group from the end of the 60s – one who really showcase that shift on the scene from standard beat styles to much more sophisticated music! The group features Robbie van Leeuwen in the lineup, famous for his work to come in Shocking Blue – and the album does a great job of mixing together catchy, upbeat numbers with some that have larger arrangements – balanced in a very cool way, so that the whole thing never loses its groove – maybe a bit like the Bee Gees as they were stepping things up at the end of the 60s too, but with less harmony in the approach. Titles include "Wedding Of The Hundred Brides", "Illusions", "Looking In My Eyes", "Electric Baby", "Freedom", "Slow Motion", "Hey Everybody", "Chicks", "What's Your Name", "Eliza", and "It's Alright". Jorge Luis PachecoLockdown ... CD
Ropeadope, 2022. New Copy ... $11.99 13.99
Keyboardist Jorge Luis Pacheco works here mostly in a trio format, but has a way of coming across with a much broader sound – partly through his surprisingly deft command of the keyboard, which you might not expect from his youthful image on the cover – partly through the combination of the instrument with some additional layers of sound – used gently next to the bass of Helmut Reuter and drums of Thomas Hempel. Singer Anna Rabea Pacheco appears on two of the album's eight tracks, but most are instrumental – and titles include "Chan Chan", "705 Y Medio", "Sonnet 18", "To Oscar", "La Conga", and a remake of the Bee Gees classic "How Deep Is Your Love". PartnersLast Disco In Paris (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Marlin/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1979. New Copy ... $12.99 15.99
A sweet disco set from the late 70s – the only one we've ever seen by the Partners, who we're guessing were some sort of European studio combo! The sound is mighty nice – exactly what you'd guess from the title – the best sort of funky Euro disco style of the time, with some sweet harmony vocals that almost have a Bee Gees vibe – yet never nearly as poppy as their disco tunes! There's a warmth here that marks the Paris in contrast to other European club sounds of the time – and attention to lyrics that goes way past the usual "let's throw a singer at some grooves" – especially on the album's mellower cuts. Titles include "Partners", "Friday", "Dance", "Green Eyes", and "Love Meant To Be". CD

✨✧ Johnny MathisLove Story/You've Got A Friend/First Time Ever/Song Sung Blue ... CD
Columbia/BGO (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Pure mellow magic – four early 70s Johnny Mathis albums in a single set! Love Story has Johnny Mathis finding a perfect 70s space for his sublime vocal style – not the late nite love moods of the early years, but instead the warmer territory of the rising adult contemporary market – one that almost seemed tailor made for the Mathis magic! Producer Jack Gold does a great job of mixing up moods here – but as you might expect, the ballads are where Johnny really knocks it out of the park – on titles that include "Love Story", "We've Only Just Begun", "My Sweet Lord", "Goin Out Of My Head/Can't Take My Eyes Off You", "Loss Of Love", "We've Only Just Begun", and "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life". You've Got A Friend is a great setting for the legendary voice of Johnny Mathis – as the maturing singer takes on then-contemporary tracks by artists like Carole King, Kris Kristofferson, and The Bee Gees! These tunes really get a different treatment here in Johnny's hands – not just because the arrangements are quite far from the original pop songs – but also because that magic Mathis style really has a lot of different inflections on the lyrics! Titles include "You've Got A Friend", "Help Me Make It Through The Night", "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart", "If You Could Read My Mind", "For All We Know", "If We Only Have Love", and "It's Too Late". First Time Ever I Saw Your Face is one of those records that perfectly illustrates the shift that Johnny Mathis had made by the 70s – his move from the late nite spot on the cushions of the couch, to a more sophisticated interpreter of richer emotions that provide more than a day's worth of expression on an album like this! Mathis has completely perfected his voice by this point – and almost uses it in painterly fashion, over full arrangements from All Caps and D'Arneill Pershing – with lightly flowing strings, tinkling piano, and all these subtle elements that never get in the way of Johnny's majestic lead. Titles include "The Summer Knows", "Since I Fell For You", "Without You", "Betcha By Golly Wow", "Last Night I Didn't Get To Sleep At All", "Speak Softly Love", and "First Time Ever I Saw Your Face". Song Sung Blue is a nice little album that has the legendary voice of Johnny Mathis taking on mature songwriting material from Gilbert O'Sullivan, Ralph MacDonald, Burt Bacharach, Neil Diamond, and even Bill Withers! All the tunes get completely transformed in the Mathis approach – very different than their familiar versions, not just thanks to Johnny's unique vocals – but also the rich arrangements by D'Arneill Pershing, who was turning out to be one of the best Mathis arrangers in the 70s – able to balance individual elements in the backings in just the right way to echo the spirit of the songs. Titles include "Play Me", "Alone Again Naturally", "Lean On Me", "Too Young", "Where Is The Love", "Run To Me", and "Song Sung Blue". CD

Cadet, 1967. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One of the best Rotary Connection albums for Cadet – with an incredible baroque spacey soul sound that still feels very fresh today! The group's vocals are especially eerie – and float around these wild arrangements by Charles Stepney, peppered with strings, soul, fuzzy guitars, and even slight bits of electronics. The album features their incredible cut "Memory Band" – the one that begins with those cool sitar riffs that have been sampled by Tribe Called Quest and The Fugees. Other tracks include "Ruby Tuesday", "Soul Man", "Amen", "Rapid Transit", and "Black Noise". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Bridget St JohnDandelion Albums & BBC Recordings Collection (Ask Me No Questions/Songs For The Gentle Man/Thank You For/Live BBC) (4CD set) ... CD
Cherry Red (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 4CD ... Out Of Stock
A massive collection of work from the legendary Bridget St John – a singer who just seems to get better and better the more we listen to her music! First up is the album Ask Me No Questions – a set with the same spare, chilling quality as Nico's first album on Verve! Like Nico, Bridget is amazingly without categorization – a folksinger initially, but one who's working here with a darkly personal quality that goes far beyond most folk work of the 60s! There's almost a Leonard Cohen-like quality to the tracks here – as they're little song-paintings in words that accomplish a tremendous amount with very little – evocative portraits and landscapes that need little more than Bridget's voice and guitar to carry them off. Titles include "Autumn Lullaby", "Like Never Before", "Barefeet & Hot Pavement", "I Like To Be With You In The Sun", "Many Happy Returns", and "Ask Me No Questions". Next is Songs For The Gentle Man – a slightly more expanded version of the sound explored on her debut! Bridget's still very much in a folk-inspired sound here – but like the work of Nick Drake and some of her contemporaries on the British scene, this album has jazzier phrasings and some slightly baroque touches on some tunes – really deepening the feel of the songs, and giving the album a dark depth that we'd easily compare with some of Drake's greatest work. Studio genius Ron Geesin produced the set with a surprising degree of subtlety – just the right amount of edgey undercurrents to unsettle the tunes nicely – never threatening Bridget's presence on the album, but augmenting the moody spectrums that already came across so nicely on the first record. Titles include "A Day A Way", "City Crazy", "Back To Stay", "Seagull Sunday", "If You'd Been There", "Song For The Laird Of Connaught Hall (part 2)", "It Seems Very Strange", and a version of Donovan's "The Pebble & The Man". Next is Thank You For – a slight shift in styles for British singer/songwriter Bridget St John – an album that shakes off a few of the folksy touches of earlier years, but still retains all the dark corners that make her work so great! A few tracks on the album have Bridget working with more traditional accompaniment, but overall most of the record still focuses strongly on voice and guitar – augmented slightly by additional instrumentation that's used sparingly, but beautifully. Most of the tracks here are still by St John – including "Nice", "Thank You For", "Happy Day", and "To Leave Your Cover" – but the album also features a few covers, like Buddy Holly's "Every Day" and Dylan's "Love Minus Zero No Limit". And the final CD features BBC recordings from 1968 to 1972 – including performances for Nite Ride, Top Gear, Peter Sarstedt, Bob Harris, and In Concert. CD
