BeatlesLet It Be ... CD
Apple, 1970. Used ... $4.99
A bittersweet farewell from The Beatles – a record that definitely shows the fracturing unity of the group, with lots of near-solo moments – but a set that also makes us really wonder what they'd have done with all this genius, had they managed to hold it together! There's great hints here of the solo work to come – especially from George Harrison and John Lennon – and the Phil Spector production really helps open up a new sound for the group. Includes the genius cuts "I Dig A Pony", "Two Of Us", "Across The Universe", "I Me Mine", "One After 909", "For You Blue", and "Let It Be". CD

Bonzo Dog Doo Dah BandLet's Make Up & Be Friendly ... LP
United Artists, 1972. Very Good+ ... $5.99
The last album from the legendary Bonzo Dog Band – issued at a time when the group were going their separate ways, hence the somewhat ironic title! The set's possibly a bit more musical than before – and almost even shows some traces of the hipper, artier side of the British scene that was bubbling under in the jazz rock generation – that mix of sounds and styles that would emerge more fully on Virgin Records in the next few years. Instrumentation is actually quite focused at times – and includes saxes, flute, xylophone, and some surprisingly well-played guitar. But most noteworthy are the more straightforward lyrics of some tunes – the lack of jokes and more personally poetic moments in their place. There's still a fair bit of funny bits, too, though – and titles include "The Strain", "Turkeys", "King Of Scurf", "Waiting For The Wardrobe", "Slush", "Bad Blood", and "Rawlinson End". LP, Vinyl record album

Barbara BrownGot To Be Somebody – The XL Sessions – 60s Memphis Gold ... LP
Kent (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $19.99 22.99
A great full length collection of work by Memphis singer Barbara Brown – a vocalist who appeared both as a solo act, and with her sisters – on a variety of singles for labels like Cadet, Atlantic, Tower, and MGM in the late 60s and early 70s! Barbara's got a deep, rich voice that's clearly schooled in gospel, but pointed towards more secular ends – an approach that's very much in keeping with the best late 60s wave of soul from Atlantic Records, and which is carried off here with a sharpness and precision that's simply mindblowing! Why Brown never scored bigger is a real mystery to us, because these tunes come off like the cream of the crop of southern soul at the end of the 60s – not just obscurities for obscurity sake, but some of the highest level of soul a female soul singer could hope for at the time! Titles include "Can't Find No Happiness", "Plenty Of Room", "A Great Big Thing", "Things Have Gone To Pieces", "Man Around The House", "Play Thing", "I'm Gonna Start A War", "I Don't Want To Have To Wait", "It Hurts Me So Much", "Got To Be Somebody", "There's A Look On Your Face", and "If I Can't Run To You I'll Crawl". A wonderful pairing, and one that's really helped Raheem DeVaughn find a great new place in his music – a space that's still got all the sensual soul of previous records, but which has him collaborating with The Colleagues to give it a lot more focus and direction! There's a classic vibe taking place here – even amidst song topics that are very contemporary – and Raheem seems to rise up like a contemporary Marvin Gaye, with a sense of majesty and presence that he's never had before – and which shows that his pairing with The Colleagues production team is a mighty great thing. Titles include "Up & Down", "Lawd Help Me", "Marvin Used To Say", "Mr Midnight", "Motions", "Black Fist Cafe", "Twilight", "Special Occasion", and "Outer Limits". CD

One of our favorite doo-wop tracks of all time! Nolan Strong and the Diablos do an incredible job with "The Wind" – making the cut slow, deep, sad, and dreamy – in a way that few other doo wop groups could match. Gilberto GilTo Be Alive Is Good (Anos 80) ... CD
Warner (Brazil), 1980s. Used ... $24.99
A great collection of work by Gilberto Gil – tracks recorded throughout the 80s, and done in a variety of styles, all of which show him at his best during the time! Lots of the tunes step off the smooth soul and funkier modes of the late 70s, taking Gil into the strongly R&B-influenced sound that dominated much of his 80s work – and a few of the other tunes feature a more experimental approach to pop, done in quirkier modes. Titles include "Estrela", "Quatro Modos", "Noite De Lua Cheia", "Serafim", "It's Good To Be Alive (1985 version)", "Pode Waldir", and "Punk Da Periferia". CD

Blue Note, 1962. Used ... $16.99
A rare one from Grant Green – recorded in 1962, but not issued until 1985. The set's one of Green's early classics recorded with pianist Sonny Clark – a deeply soulful player who really had the right feel for Green's more lyrical soul jazz numbers. The rest of the group includes Ike Quebec on tenor, plus Sam Jones on bass and Louis Hayes on drums. The tracks are laidback and introspective – but still have enough of a groove to fit with Green's best work at the time. Titles include "Count Every Star", "If I Should Lose You", "Born To Be Blue", and "My One And Only Love". CD

Isaac HayesTo Be Continued ... LP
Enterprise, 1970. Very Good+ ... $14.99
One of Isaac Hayes early 70s classics for Stax Records – a perfectly conceived masterpiece of baroque soul that builds and builds as the set goes on! Ike heads up the instrumentation on electric piano, vibes, and plenty of percussion – but he's also getting strong support here from the Memphis Symphony Orchestra – who bring in a cool sort of depth to the record, and almost make it come off like some badass blacksploitation soundtrack! But the difference here is that the tracks are all long and drawn out – quite sophisticated stuff that often has Hayes extrapolating from a few basic lyrics, and moving into some bad-rapping territory of his own. Titles include the killer funky "Ike's Mood I", plus an incredible long version of "The Look Of Love", done in such a way that transforms the song into a prayer of darkness! Other tracks include "You've Lost That Lovin Feeling", "Runnin Out Of Fools", and "Our Day Will Come". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original yellow logo label pressing.)

Eddie HendersonBe Cool ... CD
Smoke Sessions, 2018. Used ... $11.99
Cool is one thing that Eddie Henderson always is – as his sense of tone and timing just seem to get better and better as the years go on – and that's saying a lot, given that Eddie's legacy goes way back to the 70s! And although he did plenty of fusion and soul experiments in his youth, the later decades have always had Henderson moving into a role more as a classic stylist on the trumpet – one who seems to always set a new bar for his playing as time passes by – to a point where anyone would be daft not to call Eddie one of the more important voices on his instrument in the past 30 years. That sense of cool is definitely in place here, as is Henderson's subtle swing, even on the ballads – as Eddie works in a tight quintet with Donald Harrison on alto, Kenny Barron on piano, Essiet Essiet on bass, and Mike Clark on drums – on titles that include "Fran Dance", "Loft Funk", "Nightride", "The Sand Castle Head Hunter", "Naima", "Smoke Screen", "Bee Cool", and "Moontrane". Fantastic 70s soul! 2 of the best cuts ever from the Lamont Dozier years on Invictus – all handled by the Holland Dozier Holland team, with vocals by Lamont. "Don't Leave Me" is a killer track from Lamont's Love & Beauty album – done here in an instrumental version, with a hook that won't quit, and a driving piano groove that's super catchy! "Why Can't We Be Lovers" is a great tune too – with one of those 70s soul hooks that you'll be humming all day long! 7-inch, Vinyl record

A great 80s groove from Thelma Houston – a set with arrangements that are leaner and meaner than before, still topped with those amazing soul diva vocals! Arrangements on the set are handled by George Tobin & Mike Piccirillo – who really give the album a nice sort of focus – groovers that shake off some of the disco styles of earlier years, balanced with a few ballads that help Houston slide nicely into some crossover territory too! Titles include "If You Feel It", "Never Give You Up", "Don't Make Me Over", "Hollywood", "Too Many Teardrops", "Never Gonna Be Another One", and "96 Tears". LP, Vinyl record album

Way nicer than some of Milt's earlier work – and one of the gems he recorded with bassist Ray Brown during the late 60s. The group's got a tight soul jazz stepping groove – with Monty Alexander on piano, comping along right over Ray's warm basslines in a very tasty way. Teddy Edwards plays tenor – and tracks icnlude "Listen, Hear" (a clear parody of Eddie Harris' hit), "SKJ", and "Bag's Groove". LP, Vinyl record album

Jarrod LawsonBe The Change ... CD
Dome (UK), 2020. New Copy ... $14.99 18.99
Really fantastic work from Jarrod Lawson – one of those underground singers who should be huge, if the world had any justice! Lawson's a cut above, and completely his own singer – the kind of individual talent that comes along once in a generation, like Al Jarreau or Michael Franks – and like both of them, he's got a way of singing in a style that's steeped in jazz, but which comes across with a soulful palette that's all his own – the kind of mode that grabs you right away, and makes you know that you're listening to something really unique, really different, and really special! And while we've loved Lawson before, this album is his crowning achievement to date – the kind of set that really pushes him over the top, and which earns the term "instant classic" in our book. Lawson plays plenty of sweet keyboards next to his amazing vocals – and titles include "Be The Change", "Universal Chord", "Evalee", "Connected", "Embrace What We Are", "Soul Symphony", "Love Isn't Always Enough", "I'll Be Your Radio", and "How Long". A wild one from the heady days of Leary's greatness – and a really odd record that's made even more mysterious by the lack of liner notes! Side one features an extended jamming guitar track – "Live & Let Live" – often funky in parts, and with Leary speaking from time to time, in a mode that fades down the music while the knowledge is delivered, then goes back to jamming. Side two features two similar tracks – "You Can Be Anyone This Time Around" and "What Do You Turn On When You Turn On" – again with trippy jamming music in the background, and Tim laying down some almost-spooky spoken bits over the top! Left BankeThere's Gonna Be A Storm – The Complete Recordings 1966 to 1969 ... CD
Mercury, Late 60s. Used ... $14.99
Rarely has a compilation on an artist ever been done so well! This materful set compiles all of the rare recordings made by The Left Banke for Mercury during the late 60's – and it puts all 26 tracks together with a great set of notes that details the rocky history of the group. If you don't know The Left Banke, their unique style of "baroque rock" is a wonderful mix of groovy organ, electric harpsichord, and swirling strings – all set as instrumentation for some of the tightest, grooviest little songs you'll ever hear. Nearly every track on here is a toe-tapping hummer, and even if you know their big hits like "Walk Away Renee" and "Pretty Ballerina", you'll still find lots of other goodies like "Desiree", "Ivy Ivy", "Barterers & Their Wives", and "I Haven't Got The Nerve". Great stuff, and a CD that we're never without on a road trip! CD

Judnell/Now Again, 1970. New Copy 2LP ... $20.99 25.98
A record that definitely lives up to its title – as it's a lot freer and more spiritual than later work from drummer Bubbha Thomas and his Lightmen group! This set perfectly captures the unique vibe that the ensemble brought to the Houston scene at the start of the 70s – really the same sort of new jazz freedom explored by artists like Horace Tapscott in LA, or the AACM in Chicago – performed by a generation of musicians who might have been more straight ahead a few years before – but who really take off here in the new energy of the post-Coltrane years! Most numbers are still pretty rhythmic, and have a unified core – but some of the performances are even more outside than you'd know from later Lightmen records – showing a strong avant jazz pedigree for the members of the group. The lineup here features a very young Ronnie Laws on alto, soprano sax, and flute – sounding quite different than his jazz fusion work of the late 70s – and in addition to Thomas on drums, other players include Doug Harris on tenor, Carl Adams on trumpet, Kenny Abair on guitar, and Joe Singleton on trombone. Titles include "Creative Music", "Free As You Wanna Be", "May 67", "Luke 23:32-49", "#109 Psychosomatic", and "Talk Visit". Plus, this 2LP version features unreleased extended mono mixes – and a great booklet of notes! LP, Vinyl record album

First up is I Miss You – a groundbreaking record that forever changed the course for male soul music in the 70s – a set that has the young Teddy Pendergrass fronting the Blue Notes with a sound that's completely sublime – a mix of rough and smooth, personal and polished – which really pushed the music forward strongly for generations! The strength of the record really comes through in these amazing long tracks that have Teddy speaking, then singing – "I Miss You" and "Be For Real" – delivering a message of mature, masculine power – very much in keeping with the new values that Philly International were putting forth. The whole album's great, though – a sophisticated soul masterpiece, with the tracks "Ebony Woman", "Yesterday I Had The Blues", and "Let It Be You". Next is Black & Blue – a killer batch of studio tracks, despite the live image of the group on the cover! The album's got a slightly more expansive feel than some of the other Teddy Pendergrass-era albums by The Blue Notes – almost a mini-symphony of soul, and one that takes arrangements from Bobby Martin, Norman Harris, and Vince Montana – and wraps the vocals up in a soaring, righteous sort of feel! The rougher, more personal Teddy Pendergrass style of I Miss You is folded a bit more into the harmonies of the rest of the group here – and the result is a powerful wave of soul that pushes The Blue Notes right to the top of the pack. The album features classics like "The Love I Lost" and "Is There A Place For Me" – plus other nice material like "Concentrate On Me", "It All Depends On You", and "I'm Weak For You". To Be True is one of the legendary classics from the Philly International years of Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes – a time when the group was featuring the tremendous lead vocals of the great Teddy Pendergrass! The set's a stunner all the way through – one of the best Philly mixes of smooth, professional backings and deeply personal lyrics – as Teddy soars to the top of the mix with his excellent leads, and gets excellent support from the rest of the Blue Notes on harmonies – but also steps aside to make a bit of space to introduce singer Sharon Paige on one cut, who'd have a greater role in the group in years to come. The songwriting, production, and other Sigma Studios touches are sublime – and titles include "Hope That We Can Get Together Soon", "Where Are All My Friends", "Bad Luck", "To Be True", "Nobody Could Take Your Place", and "All Because Of A Woman". On Wake Up Everybody, Teddy Pendergrass and crew get a bit more political than on earlier releases, and adopt the righteous bubbling soul groove that had put the O'Jays over the top a few years earlier – with incredible results! The title cut – "Wake Up Everybody" – would prove to be a great example of the political Philly International hit formula applied to socially conscious themes, but the record probably scored even bigger with the club crossover hit "Don't Leave Me This Way". Other tracks include "Keep On Lovin You", "Tell The World How I Feel About Cha Baby", "I'm Searching For A Love", and "You Know How To Make Me Feel So Good" – the latter two of which also feature female vocals by Sharon Paige. Bobby Martin, Norman Harris, and Ronnie Baker did the arrangements – and this was Teddy's last LP with the group. CD3 features bonus tracks – some of them nice and long – titles that include "I Miss You (live)", "Everybody's Talkin", "Bad Luck (Tom Moulton mix)", "Don't Leave Me This Way (Tom Moulton mix)", "The Love I Lost (live)", and "If You Don't Know Me By Now (live)". ✨✧ Hugh Mundell/Augustus PabloAfrica Must Be Free By 1983 (with bonus dubs) ... CD
RAS/VP, 1978. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
An incredible moment of righteous energy from the Kingston scene of the 70s – sublime production by Augustus Pablo, and very powerful lyrics from the great Hugh Mundell! Despite the laidback groove of the record, the tunes themselves have as much political energy as American work of the spiritual jazz generation, steeped in Rastafarian inspiration, but delivered by Hugh Mundell with this beautifully fragile vocal style – which somehow almost makes the message in the music even more compelling than if it came across from a more heavy-handed force! Chinna Smith plays lead guitar, and Pablo handles a lot of the piano and melodica lines – and titles include "Let's All Unite", "My Mind", "Africa Must Be Free By 1983", "Why Do Black Men Fuss & Fight", "Book Of Life", "Run Revolution A Come", "Day Of Judgement", and "Jah Will Provide". CD also features the full Africa Dub album, too – but with each dub track right after the regular song on the record – with titles that include "Unity Dub", "My Mind Dub", "Ital Sip", "Revolution Dub", "Africa Dub", "Sufferer Dub", and "Western Kingston Style". Dawn/7T's (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 5CD ... $32.99 40.99
The complete early works of Mungo Jerry – one of the most unique groups on the British scene in the early 70s! Mungo Jerry have a style that's strongly influenced by American roots – blues, folk, hillbilly, jug, and string band sounds – of the sort that you'd hear reworked in more contemporary rock modes by American acts like Canned Heat or Nitty Gritty Dirt Band – but served up here with a very different vibe! There's a weird compressed style of productions on many tracks, which really works perfectly with the vocals of Ray Dorset – almost creating a bridge from decades past of musical expression, and the glam era of the time at which the albums were released! Apart from a few hits on the radio over here, the full Mungo Jerry sound has never been explored – and this huge package features five full albums, along with bonus tracks, all packaged in these very cool LP-styled sleeves. Albums include the self-titled Mungo Jerry, Electronically Tested, You Don't Have To Be In The Army, Boot Power, and Long-Legged Woman – plus 22 more bonus tracks too. CD

Now Again, Late 70s. New Copy ... $14.99 17.98
The rare lost legacy of the Music Makers Band – a funky group from Georgia who are best known under their previous incarnation as The Mighty Chevelles – who cut the superb Black Gold album the year before! The work here was never issued at the time, but represents some well-done sessions at the legendary Capricorn Studios – the group even sharper than before, and mixing in some clubby elements with their funk – but all without ever losing the edge that made them great in the first place! Kenny Dope remastered all the work here from the original multi-track masters – and each tune is presented in a well-crafted vocal version, and the set also features instrumentals, plus some extended mixes by Kenny as well. Titles include "That Look In Your Eyes", "You Can Be", "Lady In My Dream", "Shake Your Booty", "Let Me Start Lovin You", "We're The Band", and "That True Love Of Mine". CD

Peppermint RainbowWill You Be Staying After Sunday ... LP
Decca, 1969. Sealed ... $11.99
A wonderful bit of sunshine pop from the very obscure Peppermint Rainbow – a male/female harmony group with a sound that was a lot like the Mamas & Papas – blending folk rock and sweet pop into a really sunny groove! The album's worth it alone for the massive title track – "Will You Be Staying After Sunday", a tune that's got a sad undercurrent that seems to single-handedly dismantle all of the sexual freedom offered by the late 60s with a one sentence confession of the emotionality that was also attached. Other tracks are also nice – and include "Don't Wake Me Up In The Morning Michael", "Run Like The Devil", "I Found Out I Was A Woman", and "Walking In Different Circles" – most of which were written by arranger/producer Paul Leka. Flora PurimNothing Will Be As It Was Tomorrow ... LP
Warner, 1977. Near Mint- ... $14.99
Quite different from Flora's earlier work, but in a way that we find quite compelling! The record was produced by Leon Ndugu Chancler, and it's got a smooth fusion sound that's kind of in a southern California R&B mode, played by a huge range of excellent Brazilian and west coast talents that include Patrice Rushen, Dorothy Ashby, Fred Jackson, Raul De Souza, Toninho Horta, and Airto. While this sound overwhelms the core of Flora's usual Brazilian jazz approach, it also expands some of the tracks to a great groove – with Flora's vocals on top, stretching out in a whole new way! Includes a great English language version of the Milton Nascimento classic "Nada Sera Como Antes", plus the cuts "You Love Me Only", "I'm Coming For Your Love", "Corre Nina", "Angels", "Bridges", and "Fairy Tale Song". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has minimal wear.)

Sun RaGod Is More Than Love Can Ever Be ... CD
Saturn/Cosmic Myth, 1979. New Copy ... $12.99 13.98
One of the rarest 70s albums in the Sun Ra catalog – and one of the most unique, too – given that the format here is a piano trio, of the style often used by other jazz musicians – but completely transformed here in the hands of Ra! The music is sometimes straight, but always with angles – taking off nicely from the Horo Records mode right before – and delivered by Ra with this new sense of confidence and historical imagination on the keys of the piano – with great support from Richard Williams on bass and Luqman Ali on drums. There's no spacey production or weird instrumentation – but still, as with the Horo and Improvising Artists material, Sun Ra shows us what a tremendous jazz musician he can be in a more familiar setting – a great snap back to all those who ever might have called him a pretender. Titles include "Blythe Spirit Dance", "Tenderness", "Days Of Happiness", and "Magic City Blue". CD

ReplacementsLet It Be ... LP
Twin Tone/Rhino, 1984. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
The masterpiece by one of the greatest, most sincere rock bands of all time! Let It Be veers all over the place, or at least as much as jangly rock music can, in the best way possible. Includes the pseudo twangy opener "I Will Dare", with the distinctly midwestern hardcore of the group's earlier years showing up on "We're Coming Out" and "Tommy Gets His Tonsils Out", and Westerberg's great heart-on-sleeve, ragged balladry appearing for the closers. Like the Meat Puppets and X, the 'Mats really found themselves after they shed the rigid rules of punk rock, and developed into something every bit as honest and heartfelt. They followed the rock songbook just enough to keep their work warm and familiar, but with way too huge and hard-pounding heart to ever seem even the least bit derivative. Hell, they even make Kiss's "Black Diamond" sound sincere! Other tracks include "Favorite Thing", "Androgynous", "Unsatisfied", "Seen Your Video", "Gary's Got A Boner", "Sixteen Blue" and "Answering Machine". LP, Vinyl record album

Gil Scott-HeronRevolution Will Not Be Televised (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Flying Dutchman/BGP (UK), 1974. New Copy ... $12.99 18.99
A set that wasn't initially conceived as a full album by Gil Scott-Heron – but one that's come to be an essential part of his catalog, thanks to the always-relevant title theme! The album's actually a classic collection of work from the early years of Gil Scott-Heron at the Flying Dutchman label – a time when he was recording some of his most impressively righteous material ever – a hip mix of protest poetry and sweet jazzy numbers – played with great keyboard accompaniment from frequent partner Brian Jackson on keyboards on nearly every track – plus help from Hubert Laws on flute and sax, and Bernard Purdie on drums. Nearly all the famous classics by Gil are here, and the titles include some of Gil's best jazz funk groovers, including "Pieces Of A Man", "Lady Day & John Coltrane", "Home Is Where The Hatred Is", "Save The Children", "Sex Education Ghetto Style", "Whitey On The Moon", "Did You Hear What They Said", The Revolution Will Not Be Televised", and "No Knock". Plus, this CD edition adds in 9 more bonus tracks – including "Free Fall", "I Think I'll Call It Morning", "When You Are Who You Are", "Who'll Pay For Reparations On My Soul", "Speed Kills", "Paint It Black", "The Middle Of Your Day", "Free Will", "Or Down You Fall", and "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised (first version)". Stax/Craft, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 7CD ... $53.99 59.99
Legendary sounds from the Staple Singers – a set of albums for Stax Records that really helped push the group from the gospel folk underground into the soul music mainstream – and which also helped transform the rest of the scene in the process! The Staple Singers had recorded previously for Vee Jay, Epic, and other labels – but when the group hit Stax, at a time when the label was newly set free in the late 60s, the mix of forces really turned out to create something special – message-oriented soul music that drew on the strength of the group's gospel experience, but delivered themes that were every bit as righteous from a secular perspective too – all set to music from the great studio forces who were making Stax so wonderful at the time! This set features six full albums, all from the original tapes – Soul Folk In Action, We'll Get Over, Staple Swingers, Be Altitude Respect Yourself, Be What You Are, and City In The Sky – plus a special Singles Live & More album of bonus tracks! Bonus tracks include "Stay With Us", "Brand New Day", "Walking In Water Over Your Head", "I Got To Be Myself", "Oh La De Da", and "Trippin On Your Love" – plus Live At Wattstax recordings of "I'll Take You There", "Respect Yourself", "Heavy Makes You Happy", "Are You Sure", and "I Like The Things About Me". Brunswick/Demon (UK), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $32.99 36.99 About July 23, 2021 (delayed)
Quite possibly the greatest soul band ever to come out of Milwaukee – and a tight little ensemble who've got a really great sound! The overall feel of their work is a bit hard to peg – as the group are equally great at mellow midtempo group numbers as they are at tighter, clubbier tunes that snap with a bit more of a horn-heavy sound – and throughout the record there's a really playful feel that shows that whatever the sound, whatever the setting, these guys just had a heck of a great time working with each other! That quality can be heard especially well on the title track "I Always Wanted To Be In The Band" – a great little number that's almost an updating of the TSU Tornadoes sound for the 70s – but the whole set's great, and other tracks move into some great super-dope production that we really love! Titles include "I Am A Lonely Man", "People", "Cool Days Are Out Of Style", "I Ain't Never Gonna Let You Go", and "Cash Money". LP, Vinyl record album
