Steve FidykBattle Lines ... CD
Blue Canteen, 2020. New Copy ... $11.99 15.99
Drummer Steve Fidyk does a great job here – driving on a group that bristles with energy, and which also showcases a large number of original tunes by Steve himself! We first heard Fidyk as a leader on some of his dates for the Posi-Tone label – and there's definitely a bit of that spirit here, maybe because labelmate Joe Magnarelli does such a great job in the group on trumpet and flugelhorn – alongside Xavier Perez on tenor, Peter Zak on piano, and Michael Karn on bass. Yet there's also a different quality going on than those earlier records – maybe more of a sense of urgency, and a slight current of darkness – on tracks that include "Battle Lines", "Loophole", "Lullabye For Lori & John", "Churn", "Bootlickers Blues", and "Bebop Operations". Ronnie Scott with Kenny Graham's Afro-CubistsBattle Royale – Studio Recordings Volume 2 ... CD
Esquire/Solid (Japan), 1951/1952. Used ... $14.99
Sublime early work from the legendary Ronnie Scott – small group numbers that show him starting out the 50s as a hell of a bopper, and a handful of tracks with a Latin vibe – cut with Kenny Graham's Afro-Cubists! Those cuts begin the set, and they're wonderful – material that often has Scott out front, soloing on tenor alongside Graham – with Latin jazz backings, in a way that's similar to the best cubop material that Verve was doing at the time! The remaining part of the record features Scott leading two different small groups – with players who include Dill Jones on piano, Harry Klein on baritone, and Tony Crombie on drums. Titles include "Not So Fast", "Fast", "Twin Beds", "Avalon", "Scott's Expedition", "Nemo", "Troubled Air", "Eureka", and "Seven Eleven". CD

King, Early 50s. Used ... $4.99
It's a battle of the blues, and everyone's winning – as the set's overflowing with killer cuts from the legendary R&B years of King Records! The tracks are from a time when the label did it better than just about anyone else – melding blues, jazz, and all the raw new styles of the postwar years – into a blend that makes for non-stop gems all the way through! Wynonie Harris delivers the hilarious "Grandma Plays The Numbers", plus "Rock Mr Blues" and "Bring It Back". Roy Brown sings "Old Age Boogie", "Queen Of Diamonds", and "Trouble At Midnight". And Eddie Vinson proves that he had fire back in the old days – on the tracks "Big Mouth Gal", "Lonesome Train", and "Good Bread Alley". CD

✨✧ Lee Scratch Perry & The UpsettersBattle Of Armagideon (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Trojan/Music On Vinyl (UK), 1986. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really striking mid 80s effort from the legendary Lee Scratch Perry – done at a time when his name and reputation had risen strongly on the global scene – which also seems to come through in the music as well! There's a wider range of styles going on here than before – and Scratch is more upfront, less hidden behind his own production – feeling that sense of mission as a messenger for madness that he seemed to take up at the time – a quality that comes through both in his lyrics and vocals, and in the nicely mish-mashed production as well! The set is credited to The Upsetters, but not the classic lineup – more a cast of characters behind much of the classic Black Ark material, though in good command of Scratch's brand of funky reggae. Titles include "Introducing Myself", "Time Marches On", "The Joker", "All Things Are Possible", "Grooving", "Drum Song", "I Am A Madman", "Show Me That River", and "Sexy Lady". ✨✧ TurtlesTurtles Present The Battle of The Bands ... LP
White Whale, 1968. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the coolest concepts ever for a 60s rock record – and maybe one of the standout sets from The Turtles! The album is set up as a "Battle Of The Bands" – one that has the group pretending to be a different ensemble from track to track on the record, either Natures Children, Fats Mallard & The Bluegrass Fireball, The Bigg Brothers, The LA Bust '66, and many other fake combos – all in a way that offers up a brilliant commentary on rock music in the late 60s! The effortlessness with which the group approaches the songs is fantastic – each number could have been a hit for the individual groups, were they real. One of our favorite tracks is the incredible "I'm Chief Kamanawanalea", played by the Royal Macademia Nuts – which has an incredible funky breakbeat all the way through! Another nice one is the funky cut "Buzzsaw", which has a fuzzy guitar groove that sounds a lot like "Tramp" – and other titles include "Surfer Dan", "The Last Thing I Remember", "Elenore", "You Showed Me", "Food", and "Chicken Little Was Right". ✨✧ Karen AbbottSin In The Second City – Madams, Ministers, Playboys & The Battle For American's Soul ... Book
Random House, 2007. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Our fair city of Chicago has always been a pretty sleazy place – but back at the start of the 20th century, there was a higher kind of sex trade going on – one that featured high class houses of ill-reputed, and well-educated hookers – which led to a lot more crossing over between the brothels and the boardrooms! This well-done book looks at a very specific time in the city's history – a point when Chicago was really coming into its own – both as a city of industry and a city of sin – a place where reformers rubbed shoulders with gangsters, as part of the new urban experiment. The book does a great job of tracing this larger narrative, in a way that's hardly as salacious as you might expect – a different sort of snapshot than the Devil In The White City. 364 pages, softcover. ✨✧ Keef Hartley BandBattle Of North West Six ... LP
Deram, 1969. Very Good Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A tremendous set from one of the best – and most under-recognized – groups of the British jazz rock scene at the end of the 60s! The group have an approach that mixes heavy blues-influenced jamming with some of the lighter, more lyrical touches that were showing up at the time – in a way that gives them a firmly grounded sound at one level, but also a slightly more sophisticated, contemplative approach – making the group almost a UK equivalent to the sound of the Steve Miller Band at the time. The jazzier tracks on the album feature work by some great straight British players – including Harry Beckett and Ray Warleigh – and the album's also got a few nice slightly funky cuts that are known for their breaks! Tracks include "The Dansette Kid", "Hickory", "Not Foolish, Not Wise", "Poor Mabel", "Believe In Me", "Don't Give Up", "Hickory", and "Tadpole". LP, Vinyl record album

Johnny AdamsI Won't Cry – The Complete Ric & Ron Singles 1959 to 1964 ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $12.99 18.99
The best work ever from the great Johnny Adams – a Crescent City soul singer with a hell of a lot of power, brought into wonderfully strong focus here on these early recordings for the Ric & Ron label! Johnny recorded later in Nashville and Jackson, but he's never sounded better than on these early sides – which have a depth of feeling and timeless power that we'd rank right up there with some of the most important names during the early years of soul. The material is nicely free of overdone New Orleans styles – and instead has this care and class that really reaches out from the roots of the material, to showcase Johnny as a singer with a great deal of care and class, but one who's still able to let loose in the best deep soul modes too. Adams hardly ever got the chart coverage he should have deserved – but this 24 track set will more than support his strong legacy – with detailed notes, and a stunning array of tracks that include "Closer To You", "Teach Me To Forget", "Who You Are", "Showdown", "A Losing Battle", "Life Is Just A Struggle", "Cold Cold Heart", "Coming Around The Mountain", and "Nowhere To Go". AtmosphereSeven's Travels (with bonus tracks & download) ... LP
Rhymesayers, 2003. New Copy 3LP (reissue)... $23.99 28.98
Atmosphere's signature sound full force – but also featuring some of their most experimental material to this point! Slug bounces along melodically, tortured and true to his nature, yet he comes off a little (just a little) more optimistic this time and he recites more than just tales of love lost. He STILL is at his tightest when weaving wonderful heart-wrenching stories instead of bragging, yet I don't think you hear the name Lucy once on this album. Sean Daley, the philosopher? – maybe we'll see more and more of that in the future. ANT's production is sounding much much better since God Loves Ugly – these beats pound just a little harder, seemingly influenced by punk and classic rock, thankfully without coming anywhere near classifiable rap rock. There still is a whole lotta soul in there, which is very nice, yet he still ain't afraid to pitch the formula, say sample some off kilter scatting or a ripping metal guitar. Tracks include "Bird Sings Why The Caged I Know", "Cats Van Bags", "National Disgrace", "Liquor Lyles Cool July". "Good Times", "Keys To Life Vs 15 Minutes Of Fame", "Reflections" and more. 2019 deluxe edition F Side bonus tracks: "Say Shh", "DMFD", "On The Battle Field", "Quiet Pimpin". LP, Vinyl record album

Pierre BacheletBlack & White In Color – Original Soundtrack ... LP
Buddah, 1977. Very Good+ ... $1.99
Although composed by 70s sex-soundtrack genius Pierre Bachelet, this one's mostly a batch of jaunty, jagged little themes, a bit like Nino Rota's work for Fellini, with lots of similar touches. There's one striking number, though – "Ivory Coast Drums" – which has a weird back/forth rhythm approach, a bit of echo on the drums, and a melodic progression that makes the track a nice dark little number. Bachelet sings vocals on the French version of the "Black & White" theme – and other tracks include "The Letter", "The Battle", "Crossing The Rhine", "Fresnoy's Theme", and "La Chanson Des Souliers". Arthur BlytheDa Da/Basic Blythe ... CD
Columbia/BGO (UK), 1986/1988. New Copy 2CD ... $8.99 16.99
A pair of 80s albums from saxophonist Arthur Blythe – back to back in a single set! Da Da is a set that mixes some of the sharper edges of Blythe's earlier records with a few more contemporary touches – but always at a level that still has the reedman standing far from the mainstream! The core group here features Olu Dara on trumpet, Cecil McBee on bass, John Hicks on piano, and Bobby Battle on drums – and on the acoustic tracks, there's some great energy between them that soars with a soulful spirit birthed in the loft jazz years, maybe swung a bit straighter than before. A few other tunes add in some extra elements – an electric bass on one number, some light strings on another – but the core of the album still has a magnificent focus on that tone that Blythe had only perfected even more on records like this, especially on the more laidback numbers, which come as a real surprise, and reflect a ballad style we might not have guessed in the early days. Titles include "Odessa", "Esquinas", "After Paris", "Crescent", and "Break Time". Next up is Basic Blythe – not exactly basic work from Arthur Blythe, as the set features an added string ensemble too – but a record that certainly has the saxophonist really hitting a whole new level of genius! There's a great core group here – with John Hicks on piano, Anthony Cox on bass, and Bobby Battle on drums – and the strings are added in around the edges, never getting to much in the way of the combo energy, but also fleshing out the sound with this beautiful richness that only seems to enhance the sharp tone of Arthur's alto sax! The arrangements are great, too – hardly the usual "with strings" material, and instead very creative – with this mix of soul and sophistication that reminds us a bit of the Bill Lee scores for early Spike Lee films, but even longer and with the key addition of Blythe in the lead. Titles include "Lenox Avenue Breakdown", "Faceless Woman", "Ruby My Dear", "Heart To Heart", and "As Of Yet". CD

Arthur BlytheElaborations/Light Blue/Put Sunshine In It ... CD
Columbia/BGO (UK), Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... $8.99 16.99
A trio of 80s albums from saxophonist Arthur Blythe – brought together in a 2CD set! First up is Elaborations – a beautiful moment in which the loft jazz generation really got a chance to shine in the mainstream – and mostly without any sense of overdone attempts at commercialization! The album's a great summation of all the ideas that reedman Arthur Blythe was cooking up in the 70s underground – performed here with a hip group that includes Blythe on alto, Kelvyn Bell on guitar, Abdul Wadud on cello, Bobby Battle on drums, Bob Stewart on tuba, Wilbur Morris on bass, and Mohammad Abdullah on congas – some of them players who you might never have expected to be recording for Columbia Records! And yet the setting of the record doesn't interfere with their creativity at all – and instead, really seems to give Blythe and the group the sort of focus that only makes their ideas even better – on titles that include "Elaborations", "Metamorphosis", "Sister Daisy", "Shadows", and "The Lower Nile". Light Blue is a wonderful record from saxophonist Arthur Blythe – a set that features his group working through a number of tunes by Thelonious Monk – but with very different arrangements and instrumentation that change things up completely! The set came at a time when Monk was receiving a lot of new attention in the world of jazz, and at a time when Arthur's star had risen too – and the meeting of forces is wonderful – as Blythe brings all sorts of new rhythms and tonal combinations to play with familiar tunes that really transform in the process. The group is a familiar one for Blythe – and features Abdul Wadud on cello, Kelvyn Bell on guitar, Bob Stewart on tuba, and Bobby Battle on drums! And while you might scratch your head at the tuba, the instrument is often used in ways that might follow older bassline styles – but with a quality that bridges the alto and cello in a great way. Titles include "Nutty", "Coming On The Hudson", "Light Blue", "Epistrophy", and "We See". Put Sunshine In It is a record that really seems to live up to its title – as the sound here is maybe a little bit sunnier than on some of Arthur Blythe's previous albums! The record features heavy contributions from Todd Cochran – aka Bayete – who plays keyboards on most numbers, and introduces more of an electric vibe to the album than previous Blythe outings. The style isn't entirely fusion, but it's definitely warm and sunny – and Arthur responds as such with his solo work – a tight tighter and less edgey, but still nicely soulful. The album features a nice remake of the tune "Sentimental Walk" – from the movie Diva – plus the tracks "Uptown Strut", "Silhouette", "Put Sunshine In It", and "Tumalalumah". CD

Billy ButlerRight Tracks – The Complete Okeh Recordings 1963 to 1966 ... CD
Okeh/Kent (UK), Mid 60s. Used ... $10.99
The complete Okeh label recordings of Billy Butler – Jerry Butler's lesser-known brother, but an even more grooving artist on the Chicago soul scene of the 60s! Billy's work at Okeh is easily some of the best of the all-great imprint – tracks that step, slide, and groove along in a flurry of tight-edged Chi-soul rhythms – nearly all of which are produced by the legendary Carl Davis, with arrangements from Johnny Pate and Riley Hampton! Billy's in the lead on vocals, but nearly all numbers have a strong harmony soul component too – support from The Four Enchanters or Chanters – in a mode that echoes The Impressions' style of the time somewhat, but which also carries more of the Butler-family emotive quality, thanks to the stronger lead. This is the first time all this material has ever been brought together so well – and the package features great notes and a number of previously unissued titles as well – including some rare versions and instrumentals that are sure to get some play from Northern Soul listeners. Titles include "Found True Love", "Lady Love", "Gotta Get Away", "Can't Live Without Her", "Right Track", "Boston Monkey", "Does It Matter", "Fighting A Losing Battle", "To Be Or Not To Be", "Singing The Blues", and "You're Gonna Be Sorry". The classic debut LP from the combined members of the legendary Hieroglyphics collective! For as long as individual members and like Del Tha Funky Homosapien and affiliated groups like Souls Of Mischief had been dominating discussions about Bay Area hip hop, you had to wonder how they'd rein it all in for the a consistent group effort, but it may be that veteran wisdom that makes it such a winning effort. Some of the tracks hew closer to the older Hiero sound introduced by Del and the Souls of Mischief on their classic first couple of LPs, and some of the tracks have a grittier late 90s feel – and it's a consistently strong effort to this day. Trius/King, 1972. Sealed ... $24.99
An obscure little album – but one that's had surprising life in recent years, thanks to a great batch of funky tracks on the set! Little Royal is one of those soul singers who doesn't mind borrowing bits from bigger stars as long as they work well in his act – stepping out like Garland Green on the album's title version of "Jealous Kind Of Fellow" (oddly credited to Royal as the writer!), or like Joe Tex on some of the mellower southern soul numbers – but sounding even better as a rougher James Brown-styled singer on the album's funkier tracks! Huey P Meux produced the record down in Houston, but he's clearly trying to give the record some of the grittier styles of Brown's later work on King – possibly in the hopes that Royal might replace him as King's leading star when James departed for Polydor. Titles in clude the classics "Razor Blade" and "Panama Red", both great instrumental numbers that crackle like some of JB's late King work – plus "I'll Come Crawling", "Soul Train", "Losing Battle", "Jealous", and "My Love Needs Company". A really fantastic score from Ennio Morricone – maybe better this time around than the images on the screen for some of his other westerns of the period – more proof that the maestro was always willing to rise above, and give his best no matter what the setting! The music begins with some already-fantastic elements – mule-like noises that mark the theme and title of the film – carried out with that fantastic sense of western flourish that Morricone could do so well – a use of space in the music that evokes the landscape, even without images to view – as subtle orchestrations mix with occasional guitar, and a fair bit of the sorts of unfamiliar sounds that the maestro was always able to create! Titles include "The Braying Mule", "The Battle", "The Cool Mule", "La Cueva", "Night On The Desert", and "Time For Miracles". Morwell Unlimited/Prince Far I & The ArabsA1 Dub/Cry Tuff Dub Encounter Chapter IV (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Doctor Bird/Trojan (UK), Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99
A pair of rare dub albums – back to back in a single set, with bonus tracks too! On A1 Dub, Blacka Morwell serves up some massive dub – working at Channel 1, for an obscure album on Trojan Records – but maybe coming across with some of the richness of the Island Records generation! There's a fullness to the sound that's wonderful – top-to-bottom completely solid, and often highly focused on the rhythms, but also always using one key instrumental element on each cut – a bit of organ here, a weeping guitar there, or even an odd sonic element – always given center stage in the spotlight, and set apart from the rest of the mix in a really great way. Titles include "Downtown Rebel", "Well Crucial", "Different Style", "West Side Ranking", "Pressure Rock", "Blackboard Jungle", and "Waterpump Skank". Next is Cry Tuff Dub Encounter 4 – from Prince Far I & The Arabs – an almost seamless set of dub instrumentals, recorded at Channel One in 1981 – the underground Jamaican groove, but maybe given a slightly better sound quality overall – that good mix of indie and professional that was the Trojan Records calling card as the 70s moved on! A crisp upfront production style separates this one from some of its dub predecessors – but the record has a great analog dub sound, with many effects and instruments echoing in and out of the mix. Titles include "Lion Stone", "Foundation Stepper", "Sound Gesture", "Destruction Sound Battle", and "Stone African Ground". And if that's not enough, the whole thing features a whole CD of bonus material – rare tracks taken from the 12" Attack series by Trojan Records – with cuts that include "Jammin For Survival" by Jammy's At The Controls, "Bali Hi Special" by The Sowell Radics, "Fuss & Fight Dub" by Eddie Fitzroy, "Ball Of Fire" by Bim Sherman, "Stand & Look Dub" by Fat Man All Stars, "Caring For My Sister" by Scientist & Roots Radics, "Won't You Come On (dub)" by Witty's All STars, "Babylon Wrong Dub" by Ashanti Waugh, and "Cool Pon Your Corner Version" by Barry Brown. One of the most hyped hip hop album by rock critics of the last decade – but don't hold that against Stankonia, because these ghetto grooves from planet P-Funk were exactly what the world needed in 2000! The millenium blowout party jam feel throughout is surely a nice change of pace from all the doom and gloom out there, but they still manage to spit out enough reality to keep things feeling true – particularly in the playful battle of the sexes showdowns. Dre, Big Boi and Organized Noize continue to innovate, even if they are at the top of the charts – and we can't wait to see where they take it all next! Tracks include "Gasoline Dreams", "So Fresh, So Clean", "Ms. Jackson", "Spaghetti Junction", "I'll Call Before I Come" featuring Gangsta Boo & Eco, "B.O.B.", "Xplosion" featuring B-Real, "We Luv Deez Hoez", "Humble Mumble" featuring Erykah Badu, "Red Velvet", "Gangsta Sh*t", "Toilet Tisha" "Slum Beautiful", and "Stankonia (Stanklove)". Really wonderful work from the legendary Tony Williams – a set that has the drummer hitting a whole new sound at the start of the 90s – a groove that's rich and soulful, yet still every bit as sharp as before! The set's straight ahead, and graced with some very youthful energy by a new-generation lineup that includes Wallace Roney on trumpet, Bill Pierce on tenor and soprano sax, Mulgrew Miller on piano, and Robert Hurst on bass – all players who bristle with excitement from the very first notes, expressing a sense of confidence and vision of a new jazz generation that no longer has to battle between its inside and outside impulses. Williams' drumming is superb, and nicely understated at many points – and titles include "Native Heart", "City Of Lights", "Extreme Measures", "Liberty", and "Two Worlds". CD

One of the less-remembered records from the era of the giant rock festival – a set of tracks that were recorded during a wild cross-country hippie caravan! Although maybe not another Woodstock, the album does have some long live tracks that are really worth seeking out – in a relatively surprising blend of musicians that makes for a pretty interesting record overall! Highlights include a searing eight minute take on "Black Juju" by Alice Cooper, a ten minute medley of "How Blue Can You Get/Just A Little Love" by BB King, a twelve minute "Freakout/It Takes A Lot To Laugh" by Stoneground, a version of "Free The People" by Delaney & Bonnie, one of the rawest Doug Kershaw performances we've ever heard on "Louisiana Man/Battle Of New Orleans/Orange Blossom Special", Sal Valentino singing "Dreambo", and the Youngbloods tracks "Hippie From Olema" and "Act Naturally", both nicely tongue in cheek. Pressure Sounds (UK), 1970s. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Woah! Don't get caught in the crossfire! I Roy takes on Prince Jazzbo, and luckily for us, Tubby's not taking sides, cutting mad versions and heavy dubs as the two Dee Jays trade barbs, rhymes and witty rejoinders for a battle on wax that lasted quite a few rounds! This great set by Pressure Sounds not only documents the toasting, boasting and roasting fest that the two heavyweight mic wielders laid to wax across now sought-after 45s, it showcases Striker Lee's production talents and Tubby's well known dub wizardry. For the most part, rhythms are laid down by the Aggrovators, with a couple Jo Jo Hookim produced cuts by the Revolutionaries, but it's all fantastic material, and the set has great notes giving background on the whole battle. 15 tracks in all, including "Do You Love Me?" by Johnny Clarke, "Straight To Jazzbo's Head", "Padlock", "Jazzbo Have Fe Run" and "Straight To Derrick Morgan's Head" by I Roy, "Straight To I Roy's Head" and "Gal Boy I Roy" by Prince Jazzbo, "I Roy The Chiney Commer Around" by Derrick Morgan, and "Straight To I Roy's Big Mouth" and "The Roots Of Dub" by King Tubby & The Aggrovators. Amazing funk from this new Afro Beat combo! Forget that they're a bunch of young guys from New York – because the sound of this one is pure 70s Africa, with hard heavy drum work, super-tight horn riffing, spiraling keyboard lines, and some excellent guitar! You probably also know the work of the group from the Daktaris CD on Desco – and like that one, this album sounds like it's got roots that are 30 years old, and a sound that's actually more perfect and more satisfying than some of the best Afro-Funk of the 70s. A beautiful moment in which the loft jazz generation really got a chance to shine in the mainstream – and mostly without any sense of overdone attempts at commercialization! Not exactly basic work from Arthur Blythe, as the set features an added string ensemble too – but a record that certainly has the saxophonist really hitting a whole new level of genius! The alto sax of Arthur Blythe finds a great way to stretch out in this classic album from the mid 80s – a set that mixes some of the sharper edges of Blythe's earlier records with a few more contemporary touches – but always at a level that still has the reedman standing far from the mainstream!
