Chico Mann & Captain PlanetNight Visions ... LP
Bastard Jazz (UK), 2017. New Copy 2LP ... $19.99
One of the most tuneful albums we've ever heard from Chico Mann – and a set that moves into much more song-based territory than some of his earlier work! The style here is a unique hybrid of beats, breaks, and Latin – almost in a mode that could crack a larger global market, if the right forces were in place – with very catchy Spanish-language songs that are perfect for the dancefloor! There's echoes of more mainstream modes in the approach, but the overall presentation is as hip as you'd expect from Chico and Captain Planet – on titles that include "Can't Let Go", "Somos Candela", "Oye Bien", "Como Me Miras", "La Oscuridad", "Cuentos De Anoche", and a remake of Manu Dibango's "New Bell". Pendletons2 Steps Away ... CD
Bastard Jazz (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $12.99
A great full length set from The Pendletons – a group who've given us some great singles in recent years, but who seem to sharpen up their sound even more in an extended setting! These guys started out in more of a lean 80s funk mode, but have really warmed up their groove – so that both the instrumentation and vocals have a rock solid quality that results in some really strong soul tunes – still funky, but with a richer, deeper quality that almost feels like when some old school funk act would go for a midtempo stepper or a mellower groove! The set features guest work from Howard Johnson and Gizelle Smith – both of whom really slide into the Pendletons sound – and titles include "Blessings For The World", "You Do You", "No Regrets", "Life To Me", "Running Away", "There Goes My Mind", "Keep It Working", and "2 Steps Away". CD

✨✧ PendletonsFunk Forever EP ... LP
Bastard Jazz, 2018. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
The Pendletons really love the sound of 80s funk – and they do a mighty great job of recreating its charm here – thanks to some well-crafted basslines and lots of sweet keyboards! The vocals are great, too – often paired up, in that 80s way of having the voices come from a farther sonic range than the grooves at the core – just slightly spacey, but right on the money throughout! Titles include "Funk Forever", "Don't Be Late", "Telling Lies", "In The Mood", and "Set Sail". LP, Vinyl record album

VariousHorn Rock & Funky Guitar Grooves 1968 to 1974 ... CD
BGP (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $12.99 18.99
Funky sounds from a time when jazz and rock music instrumentation collided – and came up with a bastard child that was unfortunately named "jazz rock", and which kept some folks away from some surprisingly groovy records back in the day! Don't let that moniker get you down – as it's way more dated than the music on this set, and hardly gets at the soul-drenched style of the grooves – which often owe more to the horn sections of Memphis and Muscle Shoals records from earlier in the 60s, than they do from any higher attempt to merge the worlds of highbrow jazz and long-haired rock! In truth, most of these groups were probably raised on equal parts soul with all the other styles they were drinking up – and they probably also picked up a few members who got young training in school bands, then found a way to work with their guitar-playing friends – adding plenty of color and tone to the drums and bass that really drive the tunes. The set is a wonderful introduction to the genre – and not only mixes a few key classics with lots of overlooked gems – but also touches on some of the funkier nuggets that have been sampled over the years. Titles include "Toe Hold" by Al Kooper, "Run Back To Mama" by Chase, "Clown (part 1)" by The Flock, "One Fine Morning (LP version)" by Lighthouse, "It's Been A Long Time Coming" by Delaney & Bonnie, "Understanding" by Cold Blood, "Somebody Oughta Turn Your Head Around" by Crystal Mansion, "Tuane" by Hammer, "Roller Coaster" by Blood Sweat & Tears, "Clever Girl" by Tower Of Power, "Aunt Marie" by American Sound Ltd, "Gypsy Boy II" by Tobias Wood Henderson, "Blow Your Mind" by Donnie Brooks, "Boomp Boomp Chomp" by The Sons, and "Shoes" by Black Magic.
